The day before election day 2008, when all political commentary was flowing toward the candidates running for office, I used my column space to write a heartfelt thank you to President Bush (”An Election Day Note: Thanks, President Bush“).
At the time even Republicans were using every trick in the book to distance themselves from the 43rd president. Even before the Florida recount of 2000 I told Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund that the Democratic Party — then led by the Clintons, John Podesta and a team of Whitewater-to-Lewinsky era smear artists including Sidney Blumenthal — would use President Bush as an example to Republicans as a thorough payback for Impeachment.

Florida was a sign of things to come as the left recognized that Bush’s friendly “uniter-not-a-divider” persona could easily be turned on its head. Ted Kennedy’s rejection of bipartisan spirit after he and Bush crafted the “No Child Left Behind” legislation foretold how all Democrats, save for Sen. Joe Lieberman, would treat the 43rd president: with graceless contempt.
The mainstream media did everything in its power to reinforce the Clintons’ revenge wishes and the far left’s political desires in making sure that Bush’s humanity was constantly on the ropes. The easy media template of Bush being stupid and evil were propaganda staples of the period of 2000 to 2008, with a disturbingly short reprieve after 9/11, when the Democrats had to temporarily suspend hostilities to feign patriotism as they held hands and sang songs. We all know how long that lasted.

The basis of the Bush attack machine was crass political opportunism mixed with revenge, and Bush’s greatest shortcoming was that he rejected defending himself and instead committed himself to doing what he thought was in the best interests of the country. I always believed in the man’s sincerity, whether I agreed with him or not. No amount of Goebbels-like rants from the media could persuade me that George W. Bush wasn’t a decent man. And my perpetual defense of him was and is less a defense of his policies — many of which, including his wartime leadership, I completely supported — but as protective mechanism against the inordinately rigged political and media systems, the Democrat Media Complex, as I have long called it.
No, the simple fact was that media deliberately and malevolently sustained a false caricature of Bush in its pages and on its broadcasts in order to bog down the leader of the free world when he needed all the help he could get, and a time when the country was in great danger. The continuum of media-legitimized Bush hatred directly resulted in the Obama candidacy which was framed by the media as the antidote to Bush’s “toxicity.”

One year into the Obama Administration, one thing is clear. The American presidency is a tough job. One can only wonder how much more successful President Bush’s presidency could have been if the media mandarins weren’t hell bent on providing a pathway for their favored Democrats to regain power. Now that the Democrats control everything it’s interesting to note how closely Obama is toeing Bush’s line on the war in Afghanistan, and how unsuccessful the new president is in rationalizing giving rights to enemy combatants. Maybe Bush wasn’t so dumb after all.
That’s what I’ve thought all along. A year after he left office, it looks more and more like others will now not only start appreciating our 43rd president, they might start wishing they helped him when he had the toughest job in the world and they could only wish him ill.
Once again: thanks, President Bush.

"The day before election day 2008, when all political commentary was flowing toward the candidates running for office, I used my column space to write a heartfelt thank you to President Bush (”An Election Day Note: Thanks, President Bush“)."
Andrew, today, the day after the special election 2010, I'd like to take a moment to thank you, and everyone in your organization(s). I'd like to congratulate you all for picking up the torch, and for becoming the new standard bearer.
The words thank you simply do not suffice, but they are the only words we have in our language.
Bush signed the bank bailouts and thus committed constitutional malpractice. He selected winners and losers and the working people will pay for it all. He clearly stated my friends are not allowed to fail while you working people are not allowed to succeed.
My hero is George
George Washington could have been king instead he chose to lead a nation of freedom.
No party or politician can claim this true greatness.
It will be a long time before he is given the credit he deserves by history, but hindsight is 20/20. He likely saved millions of lives here and in the Middle East by going on the offensive against terrorism and the Taliban, and by shutting down Saddam's mass-murdering regime, all with one hand tied behind his back by the liberal media. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of African lives he saved through his aid programs. Someday he'll get the credit he deserves for all of that.
The best thing we can do right now is to teach our children about who he really was, and what he really did. Tell them to ignore the media and educators that demonize him. We can't all be an Andrew Breitbart, but we can all spread the truth in our own homes.
/Thank you Andrew. I couldn't have said it better. I miss this man's decency. One thing is true in life; "what goes around, comes around". I believe as eyes are opened and stomachs are purged from the kool-aid, this man of integrity will be exonerated.
Thank you President Bush. I respected you then, I respect you now.
TheresaAK
I would tend to agree with you regarding Washington, but I also happen to believe that Bush has some qualities that others currently in power don't have: honour, integrity, decency, and love of country to name a few.
If Bush took the stance you cite: " He clearly stated my friends are not allowed to fail while you working people are not allowed to succeed. "; then what is Obama's stance? "My friends are not allowed to fail, while you white folks are going to be screwed?' Perhaps.
If I may quote a line from my favorite movie, Bravheart:
"History is written by those who have hanged Hero's"
Bush is the epitome of that.
Andrew, it's far from over.
While the future of Congress may remain in the hands of the the American people, there is a man in the Executive Branch who is — to your phrase — hellbent on operationalizing the dictates of the world through his foreign policy.
Afghanistan, and Haiti are just the latest examples; that Nobel Peace Prize was more than just a bribe.
We have to pay more attention to how Obama is creating dysfunction and crippling our military, how he's using he's his foreign agenda to implement a "civilian surge" to forge nationbuilding in other countries.
America's interests should be served first, before all, before any.
This is why I so miss Bush.
There was no question as to where his loyalities were.
With Obama's first interview on 1/26 with Al-Arabiya, we've known where Obama is going.
America is the trade-off for him, as are our troops who are sacrificing their lives for us.
We CANNOT let the ICC get ahold of our men.
Bush took on extrondinarily tough circumstances and provided leadership.
Obama has yet to truly take ownership of his circumstances and is proving to be less than a competent leader.
Thank you Andrew Brietbart for dearming the "Old Media" and giving us an alternative.
No amount of "spit & Polish" will coverup the shortcomings of Barak Hussien Obama.
Thank you, Andrew, for this and the other great pieces presented for today that have been so respectful to President Bush and his honorable service. I miss his leadership as Commander in Chief and remember how nice it was to have such respect for the man who was leading our country. It's a feeling of true security that is missing now, and your comments bring back the memory of that security. God bless his service and forgive us for failing to adequately appreciate President Bush.
President George W. Bush will always be a true American hero.
BO has selected his winners and losers and the non union private sector working people have been declared the losers.
The democrats can not deny this their actions have spoken.
You must understand I rightfully blame both government parties for this crap.
I still find myself defending President Bush & no I am a Conservative that didn't agree with all his social & economic decisions but I never questioned his belief that he was doing what was right for the American people. There is so many lies told about President Bush that it is impossible to put them all out. My guess is the majority of Americans wish we had him back right now as our country is under seige & make no mistake we are. Two terrorist attacks on our soil & a president that denies terrorism, a director of Homeland security who believes that the system worked.
Today is the first day-after election of Scott Brown last night-that I have had real faith that we might be able to stop obama & company from destroying this America we love as President Bush did. We need to all take lessons from him, he stood for America no matter what.
I understand completely.
We are on the same page.
Both parties have sold US out.
WE, the People have become inconsequential in the scheme of things. Granted, yesterday in MA was a wakeup call, but by November, both parties in their hubris will have forgotten it, and it will be back to business as usual. That business, the business of the people, is for elected officials to grab their share of the pie, stay in office as long as they can, then take the loot and scoot.
Nothing short of looting the treasury.
You love George Washington? So do I.. and he was loyal to America, unlike Obama.
"…the duty and interst of the United States require, that they should with sincereity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial toward the beliigerant Powers;" – GW, April 22, 1793
"The Nation, which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to is affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its DUTY and its INTEREST."
Obama's answer?
From Foreign Affairs, July/Aug 2007:
"To renew American leadership in the world, I will strengthen our common security by investing in our common humanity…"
From NPP remarks:
"..I am at the beginning, and not the end, of mylabors on the world stage."
From Cairo:
"Give our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail."
This is from an earlier post on Mr W
While "W" was better then the democrat alternative, he, by not being a true Conservative, allowed the left to define him. Many of his policies, (failure to secure the border, medicare drug coverage, Ted Kennedy education bill, Norm Manetta at transportation, and the pathetic "Homeland Security" bureaucracy, just to name a few.), just made us scratch our Conservative heads and wonder aloud….Would Algore or Jacques Kerry have been much different???
So the left/MSM hated him over Iraq and his pro Life stand…. the Right disapproved of the above list, so he had no real support in the end…. I think there is a obvious lesson for Conservatives here….
I read both articles, the one written in 2008 and this one. I, too, didn't agree with everything President Bush did, but he kept our country safe from 9/11/2001 until his last day in elected office. He wasn't as smooth a talker as our current president, but I do believe he loved this country and did the best he could as a good, decent public servant. He deserves more respect and credit than he got. And for the poster who talked about how he signed the bailouts, you're right, but the dems in Congress passed it to him before he got it, so there's lots of blame to be spread around. And if it weren't for a handful of democrats, we would never have been in this economic mess in the first place.
As long these type of blogs remain open to the public I for one will not let people forget.
This was not a republican victory. This was a unaffiliated victory for there was not enough republicans to win election. Brown must keep his promise or he will be gone that is the power of being unaffiliated. Without a party to re-elect the politician must keep their word or be gone.
41% still don’t see the tea party favorably for they see it as a republican movement.
This is the rebirth of 912 and non partisan stand an unaffiliated stand. A non partisan makes the politician pay for your vote and forces them to keep their word. It is your choice we can rebuild 912 and claim our victory or this will become history. I said from the beginning we can do this one person at a time and we can but we need non partisans. A republican nor democrat can effectively attack an independent for they need independents to win.
My hero is George and he spoke against political parties.
I am part of 912 and I have no love for BO.
I also have no love for political parties for they have bankrupted our country.
I also would agree with your sentiments there. Mine are the same. We are on the same page.
Agree or disagree with Bush policies…one thing is certain. He didn't mask his policies for political expediency. He put it all right there to see and took the heat for EVERY decision.
Thank you, Andrew, and thank you "Big" site contributors for paying respect to man that served us honorably by doing the toughest job in the world.
Ask yourself why you feel compelled to bring up Obama when he wasn't mentioned.
The public reads our words and with each passing day our words become more powerful. I read your post every day and your words are strong.. We in our own way will save this country one person at a time.
VERY true. Look at the lies that pervaded after WWII and our unforgivable alliance with Stalin! The sick and evil forces manipulating this country's foreign policy is nothing new, indeed.
That is easy.
For the same reason that the left brings up Bush, when faced with any question.
For the same reason you bring up Jew on every thread, regardless of the topic.
With you, it is always a Jew conspiracy. Could it be, that at the end of the day, it was really a Bush, Obama, Jew conspiracy?
Thanks. Great piece.
Great article, AB, as usual. As a native Texan and resident of Waco (near Crawford), the Bush-bashing was and still is especially painful. Even our local newspaper, the Tribune-Herald, got its jolllies by raking him over the coals, daily. The paper is no longer owned by Cox (i.e. Atlanta Journal), thank God, but was bought last year by a local businessman with a conservative bent. Better late than never!
Since I read everything you write and all your "Big" sites, permit me to humbly correct a grammatical mistake in this piece and another recent one: "…Obama is TOWING Bush's line on the war in Afghanistan…" The word is TOEING, as in "toe the line" or "toe the mark." Pardon my grammar fetish. It may have been simply a matter of unwarranted spellcheck dependency. Your admirer,
President Bush deserves this country's sincerest apologies. He kept us safe and in return he was mocked and hated. It's our great shame. If it's any consolation Mr Bush, I always thought you were a good man and never questioned your love of country. You are missed by many.
In other news:
I can't believe the spin from the WH and MSM is that Brown won due to the "same anger that swept Obama into the White House." Yep, unbelievably, Brown won because Bush was a bad president.
Democrats: The Party of Tone Deaf!
Thank you.
As are yours.
Words mean things my friend. You are correct, we will save this country, one person at a time. We will show Madame Pelosi exactly what astroturf means. By the time we are through, she will wish she was in the back of Bill Clintonsold El Camino pickup, with the astroturf in the bed.
(You might have to think back on that reference……….)
Well said, Andrew! I always felt safe under President Bush, not so much since BO took office. Karma is a B*TCH and the liberals are getting what they deserved. The miracle in Massachusetts last night gave me so much hope that the same miracle could very well happen in California in November 2010 — Boxer must go ASAP.
.
Bush kept us safe and looks better and better the longer the Obama-Pelosi-Reid axis of weasels are in charge.
.
Patting myself on the back. I predicted it.
Bush didn't blame everyone else for his failures.
Bush didn't credit himself for successes that weren't his.
Bush wasn't awarded a Nobel Prize for being in office for one month.
OH no Dizzyhoff did some one say something bad about obowmao the destroyer and king asshat, please try to get over it, no wait on second thought don't. obozo's a commie deal with it.
She claim we were "astro turf" some one said a long time ago and I can't find them to give them credit "we are not astro votes"..
I can say now America is awake and fighting back. maybe not fully awake but we are gaining ground.
this is politics and you point out truth at every opportunity, even if you talking about mud.
you're not getting it .. Obama is a phenomenon beyond political parties.
He is a global socialist and has abdicated his duties as president because he prefers to protect the interests of other nations over ours.
INTERPOL is one example.
No, we're not awake. Research the UN's Doctrine R2P.
another 6 months and we will have our answer. We must keep posting the truth and fighting their lies, both parties brought us to this cliff of slavery and we will see if people will chose slavery and jump or turn and fight.
Both parties are global socialist and they have the power and the only way to fight back is to attack their power base which is The party members, with out members they have no power to do their evil.
Obama goes beyond American political parties and America's borders.
Go ask Dean that same question when he mentioned Bush over Scott Brown's win:
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/b...
Andrew, you need to post the speeches by Bush after the 2004 Tsunami and Obama after the Haitian earthquake to show the difference between them.
It's striking.
I completely agree with you, Andrew! I'll also say this…if I were his mother I'd want to strangle every mendacious member of the press I could lay my hands on. But that's just because I love my son so much, and I know his mom does too. She had much to be proud of.
you forget Obama has more power through his Executive Orders and by bypassing congress by embedding his global intents through the bureaucracy and his foreign affairs budgets.
He's operationalizing his "strenghtening our common security by investing in our common humanity" without Congress.
..and he's doing it by reminding America of "her values" to help humanity and blah.
We're going to have to do more than just vote.
I feel strongly that Bush was just another big government phony. He is the reason we lost to Obama. He is, at best a RINO/neo-con. The sooner we forget about him and find real free-market, small government, liberty minded candidates, the sooner we will start to win elections.
The tea party movement is about liberty from government – we are no longer anything close to a free country, we have the most prisoners on earth, more than even china, a communist dictatorship. Republicans who forget that we are still fighting for true liberty will lose everytime. Also, Bush had control of all house of government and squandered it on more spending, more government, and more attacks on our constitutional rights. I voted for him and I am sorry I did.
I miss President Bush every day. I miss his decency, his obvious loyalty to this country, his pride in the troops, his respect for his parents, his adoration of Laura, his respect for the office of the President, and his quiet strength when the gates of hell roared against him for eight+ years. I'm convinced that given enough time, historians will treat him fairly, especially as the glow of The One diminishes.
what are you seeing?
When we look to blame, we the American people are to blame. We slumbered and did not hold our Representatives and Presidents accountable for years. There in lies the rub…we the people are the ones who put them into power and allowed their abuses. It takes what we are going through right now to draw us back to the original document that is suppose to be our foundation. I for one am grateful to be a part of this pivotal point in history, where we either take our country back or let it slide into socialism. We were born for such a time as this….
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country……. and bring it back to is original intent. We the people must be engaged and never forget from where we have been. We must elect people "who are almost reluctant to serve" to steal from Sarah Palin. Then we can bring true reformation to our country.
If we slumber progressivism will rear its ugly head again! In both parties again! With all of that said, I do appreciate many things that GW did as POTUS, his progressivism I could have done without. But without it, the American people would not have awakened. Onward!
I never understood the constant attacks on Bush. He clearly made some errors, but was man enough to stand up to the decisions he did make. Obama, on the other hand, needs to stand up and take his licks without the constant blame the predecessor strategy that people are tiring of.
I find it amusing that even the unbalanced Ed Schultz, on MSNBC this morning, admitted that Bush was tougher. I almost fell over when he said that.
Great article!!!
The government parties gave him that power.. and thus destruction of the parties will take tat power away.. the congress is an equal power in our government, but the congress gave their power away to form a dicatatorship.
He was the consummate politician…"reluctant to serve", selfless, a rare man. That is what we need now more than ever in our country.
When I put it that way, it almost scares me….where are they?
I was no huge fan of Bush43, I believe he was head and sholders above MrGore or MrKerry. Georges' problem was he never saw a spending bill he didn't like, taking us into big deficts. Nothing like now but big at the time. He did keep us safe, never vacationed in Hawaii, and played less golf.
can you blame the people who are busy trying to survive. yes. , but the question is should we when we elected people to do us no harm, but they did any way. We are both educating people now and we are now connected to people across this country and now if we fail it will be the peoples fault.
A marvelous way of living and I agree 100% with all you've said….I prayed for Pres. Bush everyday that I could. He was and still is My President. Men like him are hard to find. Yes, one day the Truth about him will come to light. His wife is a lucky gal and his parents have every right to be forever proud of him…I know God is walking with him.
I didn't follow # 43 as close as I should have, but I appreciate his heavy hand on terrorism, more than I do the tippy-toeing thats going on now.
Just for the record, if I were on the Detroit flight, other passengers would have been pulling me off of a bloodied Nigerian.
I agree with everything except the last part. The Bush haters are completely irrational and will never give him credit for anything no matter what. I've always thought it was just sick how the media treated and still treats Bush. George W. Bush and his family have always been wonderful, kindhearted people.
Our 43rd President – George W. Bush – vindicated.
God bless you, President Bush.
Thank you for writing such a wonderful piece about a great man. I miss his sense of humor, the ability to laugh at himself and most of all his decency. Him and his lovely wife had so much more class than the couple in the white house now. HIstory will show the truth.
I think we are turning a corner for another 100 years of liberty in this nation. Maybe I am to optimistic…but then optimism carries one forward. I know you barbarian will never forget as I never will. I may have thirty years left on this earth and I plan to put all of my efforts towards maintaining political awareness of Progressivism and teaching my grandchildren (if I am so lucky to have some) their American heritage.
My thoughts exaclty DontTreadOnMe!
It was sad when President Bush departed Washington DC that cold day one year ago and was heckled relentlessly with every terrible name in the book by hundreds of people. As we watched him leave, those of us in the military quietly saluted and our hearts went with him. After 24 years in the army there are only three comanders-in-chief who we knew really cared for us. They all happened to be republicans…………………..
I kept a list of Bush's accomplishments as it became apparent that AP and the rest of the Democrat media was trying to destroy him. Among that list are these items: he took the fight to the enemy and kept us safe for the rest of his term; employment hit an all time high in U.S. history (per the BLS), productivity hit an all time high; the stock market hit an all time high; he freed millions in the Middle East and set up a huge military presence in the middle of that mess; he freed the black African nation of Liberia; Lybia gave up it's nuclear program (which now sits here in Oak Ridge, TN); personal wage growth, personal income and personal spending hit all time highs; we DID NOT have to worry about the federal govt. taking away our personal freedom and liberty! Just a few items on a very long list. And yes, being the first president to land on an aircraft carrier in a fighter jet while in office is ON the list!
the public is quick to go back to surviving and I don't blame them, but I know there are many of us now who always keep the flames turned on the politicians. I know we don't agree alot but we have a common cause… the truth and the constitution … and for me that is all we need to work together.
Well said, well said.
Amen. We probably agree on more than not. I understand your contempt for the present two party system, it may definitely need to be dismantled. But as you know I feel we need to start within the system. Keep up the good work barbarian! You are a good man!
we might not get what we both want but it is becoming clear the politicians are learning to listen.
Yes, the media set out to trash him, and he didn't do enough to defend himself, but before we go getting too weepy over our recent departed leader, let us remember some of the reasons why he (and the GOP) lost the support of conservatives, so that hopefully this will not be a phyrric victory.
- Protectionist trade bill not long after entering office
- "No child left behind", which allowed the state to encroach even further into the classrooms of our children
- Medicare prescription coverage
- Failure to reign in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
- Having benefited from a brilliant campaign of conquest in Iraq, he allowed Paul Bremer to cast one of the largest armies on the planet onto the street to fend for itself, something anyone familiar with the Thirty Years War would know was foolish.
The first 4 were abetted by and benefited liberals, and the last was just stupidity. Let us not forget.
Great piece. thanks for writing it.
The dems aren't done bashing Bush yet. There is going to be a lot of mistakes for them to continue to make, and then try and push it off on Bush Cheney. Obama already said after last nights smack down the the anger the voters are feeling goes back over the last eight years, Once again taking a swipe at W…read: Scott Brown's Christmas Gift…at…

Very true! ;^)
"Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor."
Give this a few more months – the country will be demanding a mulligan – Obama is a disaster.
Bush was competant and steady. Obama – not so much.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1209/Bush_...
I read Andrew’s Farewell to Bush from last November.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/11...
It’s amazing to compare the anti-Bush comments from last year with these mostly pro-Bush comments. Granted, the audience for BigJ differs from RealClearPolitics but…what a difference a year under reign of King O makes.
Also, Andrew, I have to give you a lot of credit for being an original thinker in the face of the heard mentality of the main stream media.
You are somewhat mistaken with your assesment. He was blocked from reinging in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by Congress. No Child Left Behind forced states to apply metrics to evaluate how education is doing. It is far from perfect but it at least addressed the problem head on. The trouble with any new program or regulation is the ability of the regulated to game the system. That is the current state of affairs in education now. As far as the last item how would you have controlled an Armed Bathist Loayal to Sadaam Army? There were mistakes made but I have not heard any brilliant counter proposals. It is one thing to gripe but unless you can point out how a different approach would have worked it is just complaining.
I do not disagree with all of your assesments but I also have a sneaking suspicion that Bush did not repeal many of the Bills sent to him because his own so-called loyal Congressmen were holding Defense funding hostage to thier own selfish interests. I have no proof but the latest dealings in Washington have made me consider that theory.
Thank you!! Your words are so gracious and true
You're so right. He is simply an honorable man. And when the lies were told of him, he never defended himself because he believe the American people were too intelligent to insult them that way. He believed we knew a lie when it was in front of us. Unlike Algore and Gi Kerry who believed we were so stupid their lies would be taken as Gospel by all of the people.
I have a bumper sticker "I Miss W.". And sure do!
It was refreshing to see an "American" President at the White House last week v the Socialist and the Playboy, made me feel like I was still an American.
When President Bush got up and spoke to the American people, I knew he was telling it as it was. When Obama speaks, he is always saying one thing and doing another. That tells me a lot about both men.
Thank you for expressing the thoughts and feelings of so many of us who recognized the basic goodness of President Bush. We have very few ways to convey our feelings in any significant way. So many of us loved him and were pained by the assaults that he suffered from so many directions. When he smiled we smiled and when he cried we knew there was good reason to cry. Thank you, President Bush, from one of the citizens from across the country who feel the same sentiments that Mr. Breitbart has expressed here.
I wasn't real happy when the RNC pushed Bush so hard, I didn't know if I could trust him because I did NOT trust the RNC. But Gore was out of the question. And still is. Then came 9/11 and I saw the look on the President's face, sitting in a Kindergarten class, honoring hiswife's education priority, and being told we were under attack. That look on his face is etched in my mind. Somehow I just knew he'd be the man to defend us. Fast forward, Obama gets knews of jihadist murder at Ft Hood. He gives a shout-out, smiling, before he gets around to our national rage and grief. Fast forward to Chistmas. Obama doesn't even bother to address the issue – he's on vacation in Hawaii. I can only imagine the look on his face, since we never saw it. Probably something like annoyance at being disturbed.
We are awakening. That's what matters. But it won't matter if we don't keep fighting. Let's support the best candidates we can – like Brown – as we can on a national level, and let's mobilize to hold our own representatives accountable on the local level.
I live in PA. Who's with me to remove scumbag Specter and replace him with a real candidate?
Good piece, as always.
I've posted on several of these threads: I didn't agree with a bit of what he did (he turned his back on conservatives), but at least I knew where he stood.
He did try to tackle some big issues, like reforming Social Security and preventing the housing bubble bursting. But the scumbag Dems stopped it. They didn't have to agree with how he wanted to do it, but they couldn't work with him to make it happen?
It's like now. OK, Obama wants to reform health care. I keep hearing that the Republicans had their chance and didn't do it. That may be so, but it was this president who decided to take it on. At that point, the Republicans are not shut out of the process because they didn't tackle it in the past. Both parties work together to come up with a solution that WORKS. Instead they were completely removed from the process and then the Democrats had the balls to whine that no Republican in the Senate will support their piece of crap legislation. For Social Security, the Dems just politicized it and refused to work on the problem. And now we're in even worse shape for it. But Bush tried, and I supported him 100% in that effort.
I don't agree with TARP either… but at that point, it just seemed like Bush was looking for a bridge until assmunch's administration took over.
I so look forward to a little less than 5 years from now when, on October 15, 2015, I hopefully have the privilege to join President George W. Bush in returning to Iraq to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of their new consitution. Granted, there is no guarantee that the seeds of democracy that GW and our brave soldiers planted will truly take root. But I wouldn't bet against it. A taste of freedom is insatiable.
I suspect that if such a gathering takes place in Iraq, GW wouldn't make any grandiose speech (ala Bama) but instead, along with Laura, will just smile with a sincere look of gratitude and accomplishment. What I wouldn't give to be a tiny head in the photo of the masses gathered for that grand occasion.
Andrew, thanks much for reawakening that dream of mine to be there.

i ditto on everything except obama bein a 'smooth talker'… he is s a smooth PROMPTER READER only. when he is left alone w/ out one, he stumbles worse than most ppl.
Even if he was slow to admit to some mistakes (like the initial Iraq strategy), you're right. He admitted he made them, and he stood by others, no matter how unpopular they were. For that, I give him credit. I do believe that he did what he honestly believed was the right thing to do.
That's not the same as Obama… Obama just does crap because its an ideological decision. He has a set of warped beliefs and then he shoehorns all of his terrible decisions into that. But Bush obviously didn't shoehorn his solutions into a conservative or liberal viewpoint. I think he listened to his advisers, for good or bad, and then made the best decision he could with that information.
Thank you for this nice piece on George Bush. He was a wonderful president to me and to my family. I believe he is a decent and caring man who did the best job possible during a very trying time for our country. We have a couple of things we disagree with him on, but overall we think he rocks. We truly miss him, his wonderful family and his pets. We miss Dick Cheney and Ms. Rice too. He made us proud of our president and our country and we felt safe when he was in office. We hope that his brother runs in the next election. One of the things I like about him is his humble good humor and joking nature while still being able to be serious. He is genuine!
Bush signed the so called bank bail out or TARP because doing doing less would have been disasterous and irresponsible. The government under democratic leadership forced the banks to make these risky loans and has the responsibility to support the banks and provide economic stability. Have you ever head of FDIC? The banks have since paid the monies back with considerable interest. So, how about reading a few books..perhaps visit your local library before spouting off with the usual ill informed propaganda you picked up when half a$$ listening to the MSM while you were playing with your X box.
Before you start bashing me, I am only asking the question because I believe it is essential to our success. Are we going down the same road the Democrats went down? I try to insult policy and try to only be offended by rudeness. Examples are cash for clunkers as policy I hate and Obama's comments about shutting up and not telling him how to mop. However, a few times I have found myself doing the same thing we have criticized the left for doing to Bush. Even though this is a conservative site and clearly supports conservative principles we need to keep steadfast and remember that just because they did it does not give us the right to do it. Two lessons I learned from my mom relate to this situation. "You will not be paid for good grades, your future expects you to do well." and "I don't care what your friends curfew is, you are not your friends." Our future expects us to maintain the highest sense of honor and just because the Dems did it doesn't mean we should.
Just something to think about, make sure we use class and civility.
THANK YOU! Seven of those bailed out banks held 75% of the total bank assets of the entire US at the time.
Thomas Sowell summed up my feelings on this very well –
http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2008/...
"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do not deserve to be bailed out, but neither do workers, families and businesses deserve to be put through the economic wringer by a collapse of credit markets, such as occurred during the Great Depression of the 1930s."
"Free market" principles will wash out the RINOs et al. I will be needing to call my state and local Republican Party chairpeople to keep them (hopefully!) from making deals with each other to nominate a candidate instead of holding a primary so THE PEOPLE can choose who they like as a candidate. I will tell them I left the GOP three years ago because of crap like this and the crap candidates it gave us. We have 7 possible candidates, and the people should vote. The people will choose a conservative. The GOP "leaders" will just pick whoever they think is "electable" and make us choose between whoever that person is or a Democrat/Working Families Socialist.
Ask yourself, "Can I make my rating into a -80 by the weekend?"

Hats off to the man ..much respect ..and to you for this article ..God bless George W Bush and family
I think that G W was the man that we needed at the time if for no other reason that he understood the entire situation and was willing to "bite the bullet" for our defense. I will take his swaggar anytime to the current metrosexual male syndrome that is currently permeating the current political scene. Yes, he didn't do everything correctly, he tried to be a little to bi-partisan (Kennedy bill etc.), but history will judge him better than people are currently attributing to him, that he was a true gentleman, he is honest , has a deep respect and admiration of and for his country
Ps one of my favorites moments in his presidency was his Sept 21 2004 UN speech ..all the commentary of the day was how he would try to smooth things over…boy was that wrong !!..he gave them hell!!! and it was you are either on the right side or the wrong side.. I loved him for that..
It was clear in 2008, the press was going to abandon all pretenses of "objectivity" and they were going to get a Democrat in the Whitehouse at any and all cost. The Bush bashing was relentless, hypocritcal and totally partisan by the media. We the people are not stupid however. We quit buying their garbage newspapers. We quit watching their hopelessly biased news programs. They started going out of business, or in the case of others have dramatically smaller market share. We the people said never again. If our press is that bad, then they should and are going out of business. Good riddance. Bush surely could have done a better job in my view. But when Obama does the EXACT same thing, the liberal media gushes about how smart he is. Did the liberal media think we would not notice? Please liberal media, go out of business as soon as is feasibly possible.
Andrew, where have you been all my life?
Thanks for what you said about Bush. Visit your site everyday.
Judy from Texas
I also must give my thanks to Pres. George W Bush. A solid man of integrity, character and conviction who went to work every day and focused to the tasks at hand, while enduring the vitrol of the liberal press machine and the American people who blindly bought into it. Even now the Dems show their lack of the same by blaming their failures on a man who hasn't even been around since the election (heh!) They just figured they were smarter than the people and figured they could pass through their agenda with Gestapo tactics, and no one would take notice. I hope that is a lesson to all of us when some politician comes around with the mantra, CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE…without explaining what that change is going to mean. It looks like some of those who voted for Obama are not too happy with their CHANGE.
Indeed it is a tough job. I think Bush was mature enough to understand that as a leader he would have to make decisions based on necessities such as national security, economic health and political realities rather than popularity. People became infected with the contrived hysteria whipped by the democrats in addition to the old shtick of class warfare. Fast forward to the elections and the country became infected with the phony populism of a well marketed personality who was adept at reading prepared content. Add to that a multitude of compliant media outlets who conspired with the democrats in the phony bogey-man campaign against Bush and you an unnecessarily complicated situation.
The current White House occupant cannot escape the immature habit of blaming someone else for the problems he helped create as a member of Congress two years before taking office. Concurrently, he has difficulty in accepting his lack of popularity and behaves too often like an entertainer seeking the adoration of fans rather than seeking the respect of a citizenry.
George W. Bush is a hero. He did more than the MSM would ever give him credit for.
He helped many people attain their dreams, he had a vision and never let go of it.
thank you Britebart for taking up the mantle of good reporting.
george bush was a progressive and i hope we dont ever get stuck with one of those again ! we dont need any phonies and career politicians
when we get on a regular basis 100,000 at tea parties then America is awake until most are happy watching sporting events.
I am all for capitalism when it comes to the parties, they either give the customer what they want or they will go out of business. I am sending the message their is an old business competeing for customers.. no party and unaffilated.
Step by step…
We're smitten, what can we say?
I wouldn't say he was a phony… he did warn us of his "compassionate conservatism" schtick.
He was DA Man!!!!!
You're an idiot
Well said my fellow American!!!
I never give up. just proving to all that read. that 912 and the tea party movement is not a republican movement. 41% still don't see tea parties as a good thing and they won't until they see independents are also shaping the cause, thus why I bash government parties, it proves we will work together not save a party but a country.
Cowboy, why do you portray your pic of a flag upside down?
I've read many of your posts and it doesn't seem that what you write matches the upside down flag.
Signed,
Stacy
There have been three attacks, everyone forgets the recruiting office attack in AR
Present Bow Wow and his Polished Chicago Thug Administration is both arrogant and ignorant. They actually think by playing Sesame Street with our enemies that they will disolve all hatred in the world. The looney liberal leftovers are now looking over their shoulders for we, the people, to set the American agenda! President Bush had an uphill battle from the start of his Presidential service with the vote count in Florida. He also spent too much money and would not confront the illegal alien problem, but we, the people, were safe under his watch. He absolutely loves our wonderful military and felt honored to be their Commander and Chief. History will be very kind to him and his lovely wife, Laura.
Bush looked us square in the eye, and told us exactly where he stood. We always knew protecting America was W's first priority. Obama couldn't look America square in the eye if he had to, and he isn't about to defend a nation he obviously hates.
You made me lol! He is working on it!
I felt safe & secure when Bush was President. I feel like a 2nd class citizen that any day may be dead because of terriost now. No matter how many Tea Partys try to get Obama's attention & no matter how many townhall meetings are held of which a great deal of the people there are seniors Obama just won't listen. We never had to go that far with Bush. He usually knew what to do to keep us safe & it sure wasn't going to other countries apologizing for Americans or it wasn't pushing this so called healthcare down our throats or cap & trade down our throats. My husband & I miss him. He was strong & bold. He said what he meant & meant what he said. He never put us out there where we might be in danger. He never let Interpol in either.
Unlike Clinton and Carter, Bush has had enough class to keep his mouth shut about the current administration.
There ain't many flies gonna light on W. I did not always agree with him, but I never questioned his dedication to protecting me from terrorism. At this time, I am not sure I feel as safe as I did.
And, may I add… flies are attracted to honey and crap… Obamao offers honey to terrorists (Miranda rights) and is full of crap. The flies light there.
One of my friends recently sent me a photo of his son, who played on this past Olympic baseball team (who is now a MLB player) and represented the Minor Leagues. He is standing there with GW at the Olympics, GW has his arm around him and you could tell by the look on GW's face that he was just as excited about having his photo taken with this fine young man who represented America, as he was having this photo taken with him. He said after the photos were taken and things quieted down, GW pulled him aside and had a nice long conversation with him about life in general., my friends son said he was just like a regular guy.
And he never told those who disagreed with him to sit down and shut up or to get out of the way.
We miss you George. The MSM has proven that you were right and you kept us safe. The other thing the MSM media has proven is that they are pathetic LOONS that helped to put a COMPLETE IDIOT-MARXIST-SOCIALIST CLOWN in the White House! The MS owes you and the American people an apology!
oh really …..TARP saved the Day????? What it did was light the fuse for our down fall… You can't defend the constitution or capitalism and then when things get a little rough due to progressive practices turn you back on the constitution.. what did save us from 25% unemployment? stock market crash? your pension going away? What was saved? What was saved????? What was destroyed was the American promise, the whole right to succeed and the right to fail.. They picked the winners and the losers were working class people who now no longer have the right to succeed. The fed is playing games that is the only reason the stock market is an illusion.
They should have failed and other companies would have taken their place, that is what capitalism and constitution is all about. We would have survived but I not sure we will survive their cure.
Thanks, Andrew. I loved your tribute.
Because of President Bush's strong values, his sense of decency and a closely-knit family to support and sustain him, he was able to carry on for us every day. I will always be indebted to him. I didn't agree with him on everything either, but never once — ever — did I doubt his love for America and his commitment to protect each and every one of us.
Laura was a bonus! What a lady and such poise and generosity in dealing with such adversity. And in spite of it all, they managed to maintain a sense of humor and goodwill.
Thank you, President Bush
I'm a pretty big Bushie but even I can't deny a single word of that. On the war I think he was the guy we needed but geez, when he said of the bailouts "I had to abandon my free market principles to save the free market system" I think I felt what, say, Alterman does whenever he sees the letter W.
I believe that during the next three years George Bush will grow in stature and respect. During that same period Barack Obama will shrink to the very small man he is.
Mr. Bush did make some mistakes, but those will fade and be dwarfed by this greatest accomplishment: He kept us safe.
[...] via » Rethinking Bush: After the MSM’s Relentless Assault, the President Still Stands Proud – B…. [...]
President Bush, by his example, almost single-handedly ensured that there'd be no repeat of the shameful treatment of returning troops by the very Americans they'd been fighting to protect.
I'll be eternally grateful to "W" for insisting that the public be kept constantly aware of … and grateful to … the dedication, valor and sacrifices of our troops. He respected and loved them, they returned the honor and both were proud to exhibit their feelings.
He was and is a decent, honorable man with the innate grace that comes only with self-knowledge who has been repeatedly maligned by lesser intellects on both sides of the political spectrum.
Bush was a genuine person with a heart the size of Texas.
Obama is a media construct with a Mexican jumping bean for a heart.
Read this story (MSNBC) to learn about how George W Bush quietly shephearded 550 metric TONS of yellow-cake uranium out of Iraq in the last months of his presidency.
He did so with absolutely zero media attention, as he knew if the public was aware it would endanger the troops involved and would risk the uranium falling into the wrong hands.
Bush sacrificed himself, his legacy, his dignity in the public eye to do his job, which was to protect America and the men who served her, at his own expense.
Some day history will appreciate what this good and honest man did for his country, and realize that he asked for nothing in return.
AMEN!! No one can ever doubt GB love for this country. And it is even more evident after having to endure one year of a man who clearly hates American and the proud people he is supposed to represent.
simon temp.. now that we exchanged such nice words and you spread your wisdom across theses pages.. What do tell all the people who was hurt by the bailouts? Is your reply "it sucks to be you". We are nation of laws.. and without law there is no republic.. your thinking is typical of a government party member, yea me screw you.
To me either you believe in capitalism and the constitution or you don't.. The bail outs did not save America it was a death warrent.
all I can say was I didn't want kerry or gore.
I was saying this before the last presidential election. In time, we will most of us look back on Bush as we do now on Reagan and Eisenhower. It seems to be happening sooner than I thought, given yesterday's election results in Massachusetts. People want straight talk, something that wishful thinking made them believe they were getting from Mr. Obama. That's why Scott Brown and Sarah Palin, cut from much the same cloth as Bush, are now the two most popular conservatives in the country, and why Scott Brown may well be on a fast track to be our next President.
BTW, thank you, Andrew, for all you have done, and for not backing down. Thanks to you, few people now listen to or respond to the epithets that that left used to demonize conservatives for years. Sure, used to be if you got called a racist, sexist, homophobe, or "White Nationalist" you'd cower and wonder how to defend yourself against these false accusations. Now, it's like, "Yeah, we've heard that all before. It don't work any more. You've been doing it too long, crying wolf when there is none."
Amen, baby.. he never shrugged anything off as someone else's problem. What a class act – he and Laura both. (Boy, does HRH Michelle ever make me miss Laura!)
Great Andrew. Here in Europe the the corrupt press joined foreces to attack this man. They did not like Reagan either. I attribute it to my own generation (b: 1946). I rememeber these liars during my student years. They litterarly took over every press outlet. I know who they are. The same happened throughout Europe and America. Thanks for your great work for freedom.
Let me share this with Americans fighting for freedom. I am a proud friend of America. There is a cought case in Europe, and the press are not on the side of freedom, as they are not in America.
They; the DEMS lost the Kennedy Seat, this is Richter Scale 10!!!!!!! I am a Europeen, and I am thinking: Obama was good for America, for you will know that the socialist avenue is closed. Now conservatives, libertarians and Christian American should come together and get serious about a platform – give and take. As much as 1994 was an inspiration, they blew it. The November election is maybe the most important for America. We in Europe need America to return to their roots. Individual Freedom, your constitution, combined with the best of conservative values. Read what Europe is concerned about: http://www.rights.no/publisher/publisher.asp?id=5...
This man was welcome to give a speech in America: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CenRu4jfL3E&fe...
“Great Britain” refused him entry. If America do not stand up for freedom, who will?
Thank you President Bush, you are a decent, honorable man. Much more than I can say for those who attacked you.
Could you imagine what great things GW could have accomplished if he had the same support from the democrats and the msm that Barry has? Look at all the good things W accomplished in spite of them, now imagine if he had even an ounce of support from them.
I would like to nominate George W. Bush to present the Republican response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address.
I agree with what you said, but want to expound on something. George W. Bush's unwillingness to contradict and fight back against the dems only emboldened them to press it further, and gave those issues legitimacy in the eyes of the brain-dead voters that depend on the Democrat Media Complex for their view of the news. This has significantly hurt the Republican Party and was responsible for giving us such cretins as Øbammy, Stuart Smalley, Jim Webb, etc… and further has emboldened the RINOs like Charlie Crist, Dede Scuuzzyfava, Olympia Snowe, etc… and pundits like Peggy Noonan, Kathleen Parker, Steve Chapman, etc… to let the dems define how they need to act to be perceived as "moderate". This is my biggest beef with W. I still love the man, his integrity, his honesty and his desire to do what he thought was right, but he received some BAD advice on how to respond to his critics.
always the lesser of two evils doesnt work for me anymore
An upsided-down flag is an official signal of distress, hence it's appropriate considering the state of the country for the past year:
THE FLAG CODE
Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10
As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress
Approved July 7, 1976
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.
we are trying to fix that one person at a time.. the independents showed their power today and it proof our message is right. we can't let the parties steal our victory.. independents are growing everyday time is on our side, plus the republicans will screw up again and get greedy.
Yes he does doesn’t he. I think of him going into the lion’s den with so much courage and get a little smile myself.
Thank you AB, glad and appreciative for the work you do.
I love that first picture up there. I think it says all there is to say about President Bush's heart. Like you, Andrew, I disagreed (profoundly) with some of his positions, but I have never doubted his intentions, or his love of this country, or his intelligence. He was determined to keep us safe, and he did. He makes me proud.
AB thank you for your sincere thoughts and words about President Bush and the other "Big" contributors thoughts and words as well. I'm also a native Texan and it still rankles me how wrong the perception is of him. He is a great great man who deserves so much more than the horrific treatment he received for 8 years. He will always be a hero and patriot to me.
yes and like glenn said make them work hard for there vote ! the elections will never be the same again !
I havn't been able to watch glenn lately, but I am sure he still speaking the truth. I wish would he would spend time on gerrymandering and elections on how theses things stole our freedom.
I second the thanks to Breitbart et al. I've noticed that Drudge frequently links to Breitbart; two or three days after BB posts something, the bloggers at Townhall pick it up, and FoxNews generally tries to keep up. I find that I am talking about issues that practically all of my co-workers either have not heard about yet, don't care about, or flat-out deny.
It's a wonderful thing to have alternative media, and I am SO GLAD that Andrew Breitbart et al are on OUR SIDE!
"WE, the People have become inconsequential in the scheme of things."
WE allowed that to happen, because we wanted to be left alone to play with our iPods and IRAs and enjoy life. When we shirk responsibility and hard work, a debt comes due.
FREEDOM ISN'T FREE.
Get to work.
Great article! Thank you President Bush! I miss you.
Perfect! Thanks Andrew!
I will always believe the bashing of President Bush was in the plan to poison people’s minds so the Democrats could turn the people to their side. We didn’t know their tricks then, but now, its obvious.
President Bush kept us safe after 9/11, he was always for the American people. President Bush and Laura Bush will always be my favorite.
Dude, Andrew is right. It is "towing"…as in to pull something…look it up.
Well said, Andrew!
What was done to this man by the media, by Hollywood and by many of his own citizens for 8 years was a DISGRACE.
Mrs. Bush is so classy and demure…such a gracious, feminine lady how could the two even be compared!
The Associated Press deserves a large part of the blame for running down President Bush. Almost every story they wrote – on ANY subject – contained a body count of American soldiers killed in Iraq. This was not news, it was propaganda and it was specifically designed to undermine the President and our war effort. The AP should be charge for treason under the Smith Act.
we won't find him in the pile of lies our politicians have covered us with, but we have his spirit and that will lead us to freedom again.
He will be a hard working, a man of integrity, self educated, humble, probably military, walking and living in the everyday world. Just like George Washington.
well even if he was right in front of us too many would just say party and ignore or bash him. I know a democrat who ran for state senate once who accepted no contributions and was more frugal than the crooked republican, but the election went straight down party lines. people hated him and didn't even know him..
I have been a fan of George W. Bush for many years. He has the heart and courage of a true public servant. I will be eternally grateful for his determination to keep our country safe. He took his job seriously and performed unselfishly. A great man.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Thank you Andrew Breitbart and thank you President George W. Bush.
Good luck Scott Brown!
History will treat him well — times are changing –
Thanks, Andrew, for your fine piece about President Bush. I hope Mr. and Mrs. Bush read the comments from all who've commented about his service to our country, and that he takes satisfaction from the fact that he's respected and missed by so many. All of us knew where his loyalties lay, and as time goes on, he will continue to look better and better as a REAL man and a President.
my sentiment exactly
I'm 40 and the best, most prosperous times of my life thus far have been while Bush was President. Interestingly, I took my first pay cut on the very day Obama's inauguration, 2nd four months later, than got laid off in July. Yes, history will be very kind to Mr. Bush.
Well look at it this way. I read in the NYT of all places that 44% of Americans wish Bush was still POTUS. Enough said.
A man of good principles. A solid man of decency. A man with a spine and the ability to laugh at himself, the heart to cry with a soldier's mother, the courage to lead and take the hits… Bush so much towers above the petty media types and political flatterers… he's in another league altogether and must have enjoyed getting back to Texas where there strength is not a stranger to gentleness and tough love is understood. God bless him and reward him for his service to his country.
I understand George Bush was not the most articulate of speakers, but I do not he came across as an honest man. I would rather deal with plain spoken honesty rather than an articulate liar. In the final analysis, an educated electorate is crucial to the smooth operation of the republic. Too many people are naively accepting of the words from a trusting media which they show better than to believe first hand. People must stay involved in the process to stay educated and therefore avoid the emotional and irrational behavior exhibited in the 2006 and 2008 elections.
President Bush and Mrs Laura Bush are classy, sincere, kind-hearted human beings. Their love for this great country is genuine and inspiring. My husband and I (both grateful immigrants, for 25 years) are extremely proud to be USA citizens, and we thank President Bush for keep us safe and prosperous during his presidency. It saddens us deeply every time the liberal media, the current administration, or even people in his own party would bash him unfairly. We miss him. We miss Mrs. Bush. God bless them and all the GOOD people in this beautiful country!
I have consistently bet for many years now – to the consternation of even my conservative friends – that Bush's standing will inexorably rise in the years ahead. 5+ years from now we will start seeing enlightened historians writing scholarly books probing his courageous, principled leadership in frightening and trying times. And the same liberals who today risibly claim they didn't vilify Regan in his time – in some credulous attempt to sound balanced while trashing Bush – will be doing the same with Bush. It is really a sucker bet – so much of the deranged hatred of Bush is based on falsehoods and irrationality that once the open festering sore of the media excoriation of Bush fades into the past, his approval has to go up.
I have come to believe that there are only 3 fundamental requirements for a good (even great) president:
1) Complete integrity
2) Strongly held principles
3) The courage to stand behind and act on the previous two
Other things may also be needed, but they are not fundamental and can be bought, borrowed or hired.
George Bush fares very well on this three point test, Obama fails miserably.
Thank you Andrew for giving voice to what should be obvious with a megaphone I could never access.
Couldn't have said it better myself, Cowboy!! I too thank Andrew for picking up the torch, that would have burned a lesser man's hand, and holding it high for everyone to see!! I could NEVER understand the hatred that the msm had for President Bush, when it was so clear that he loved his country, and only wanted the best for all of us, unlike the bozo who sits in the White House now…he does NOT care about our safety, or our general well-being…what a difference a year makes!
As stereotypical New York-entertainment industry-Jewish-liberal, I certainly awoke to a very different world (as we all did) on Sept. 12, 2001. And, although my world-view shifted dramatically, something that pushed me towards a center-right view of the world almost as much as the dramatic events of 9/11 was the way the left demonized Bush. I found it morally repugnant, and, to be frank, I actually thought of going into Iraq as something the Democrats should have been in the forefront of supporting. Roosevelt and Kennedy both were international interventionists, liberating (or at least trying to liberate) people all over the world. Like Reagan, the Democratic party had left me also.
Although I voted for Al Gore in 2000, I was a proud supporter of Bush in 2004 and have come to greatly admire the former President and continue to do so more and more as time passes. Seeing how he deals with criticism and his determination to do good in the face adversity are not only traits that I admire, but that I try to emulate.
I wish this country had more leaders like him.
We know now that the CRA/GSE system is a Faustian bargain. If Republicans should manage to regain power and still not fix it will put us right back where we were in 2008.
The trouble with No Child Left Behind is not its premise, but the fact it exists at all. Bureaucratic systems always strive to expand. It placed teachers all over the country under the federal yoke, and now we have the nerve to complain about the people being put in charge.
How would I have controlled the Iraqi Army? Exactly what we did with the Iraqi Awakening movement; I'd pay them. First, you have to recognize that there was a difference between the regular armed forces and the security services. Most of the regular forces were only as loyal as their next paycheck. For many families, it was their only means of subsistence. Pay them on condition they stay on base, isolate them from the population, remove their weapons and keep them busy with make-work and drills until you can vet them and rebuild the army.
Yes I miss Bush and Laura, at least we felt safe from terrorism, he did not always do the right things but with his position you do what you think is best at the time. He lover and cared for the people, and loved and respected the military which this Pres does not. Bush will go down in history and he is handling his retirement with grace and respect for the Obama administration, if I was him I would not have answered Obama request for help with Haiti after all the degrading things that have come out of this administration re; Bush, THANK YOU MR BUSH AND LAURA FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY
We live near Dallas so I take some pleasure in knowing our Protector President is practically a neighbor. Not to exclude Mrs. Bush in this conversation, their genuine class and knowledge of protocol shines as they go on writing their next chapters in life, quietly, even though there are sssooooooo many things that they could say about the past year. My husband and I just celebrated our anniversary yesterday, January 20th, and we recalled the way we spent last year's "Historic" Inaguration Day: standing among thousands for hours in the downtown Midland, TX waiting to welcome the Bushes home and applaud their service to our country. It's not that we want to say "I told you so," it's just that one year out, we are so happy we changed our original plans and spent that twilight evening with friends: President and Mrs. Bush.
President Bush is a decent man. His achievements speak for themselves. I miss him. I hope the bashing eventually stops and that those who have been doing it become ashamed of themselves. The one thing I have observed in my life is that you can count on the pendulum swinging.
"…they might start wishing they helped him…" Unfortunately, they have drunk so much liberal cool-aid, it is impossible for them think rationally and regret what they did to Bush.
Reminds me of the climax scene from "The Last Castle", which was a great flick, IMO.
I third (or fourth) Cowboy's motion. Breitbart has stoked the passion of the silent majority in this country, and seeing the early tangible results on Tuesday night damn near brought tears to these eyes. Each trillion dollar crisis we head off now will make the future a much brighter place. Thank you.
I too like the rest of you feel President Bush did very good and took alot on the cuff. THANK YOU for your Fortitude, and making this country a safe one. Not every decision was popular, but it was made on what was in your heart, not doing it to say I DID THAT, LOOK AT ME. Thank you President Bush, and GOD BLESS YOU AND LAURA.
Profound and accurate words – couldn't have said it better myself! Thank you Andrew!
The many differences between President Bush and president obama have their roots in one fact: One of them is a man standing tall. The other is an infant still in his crib.
No, Texas Troubadour is correct. The proper spelling IS "Toe the line", not "Tow the line"

I'm on the verge of crying from reading most of these nice posts on President Bush. Kind words spoken today, when he went through so much hurtful words for 8 years and then some. I too felt safe when he was our president. I'm scared every day now with obama. i'm scared where obama is taking us. I broke down in tears the night that Scott Brown won, and I'm from Illinois. Thanking God that someone might be able to stop or slow this man down.
It is so sad that even republicans and conservative were piling on President Bush the last few years. I felt myself continually fighting for him, becasue I knew he was a good man and was looking out for us. i hated that he or his administration didn't fight back on the constant untruths said about him. But unlike Obama, President Bush had character and didn't whine like a spoiled child (like so many said that President Bush was). I recently wrote President Bush and thanked him for his service and how much I appreciated him as our president. I think he needs to know that from all of us who agree. I received a nice thank you not back. What a man, i miss him……

I have always said that Pres. Bush was hated simply because of the election in 2000. They (liberals and democrats) were so angry that they swore to get President Bush and not only destroy his presidency but also the man. The mainstream media went right along with them quite joyfully! The hatred became vile and out of control. I sometimes wonder if they even truly knew why they hated President Bush. And then when he had the "audacity" to win again in 2004–well, it was just more than the left could fathom. The hatred became even worse. Hence–the attitude in Washington, D.C. today! Can you imagine how Pres. Bush would have been criticized if he had to have a teleprompter to make any kind of speech (see how dumb Bush is–he can't talk without a screen in front of him), how Bush would have been criticized for bowing to another world leader, or taken the attitude about terrorists that Obama has, and the list goes on. I sure slept better when Pres. Bush was our President! I felt much safer and was much safer!
[...] would be President Bush, not President Obamalinsky. Andrew Breitbart nails it, and it needs to be repeated over and over again. Florida was a sign of things to come as [...]
standing tall….seems to me he's been hiding under a rock.
of course the quicker we put both bush's behind us and move on with reaganism, the better off we'll all be
I believe that the 5 worst Presidents can be drawn and GWB is NOT among them.
1. Woodrow Wilson
2. Teddy Rossevelt
3. FDR
4. Jimmy Carter
5. Barack Obama
he mentioned it on monday or tuesday you can watch it here on this site this is all i get because i work till 8pm everynite they usally are up by 9pm and you can go into the archives and watch his other episodes http://glennbeckclips.com/
When GW Bush told the world on TV that his hero was hit Lord and Savior Jesus Christ the mad dog demonic pagans went mad and attacked him and never let up. He just smile and did his job, he never compromised in the face of an enemy, he did his duty as President and Commander and Chief, that is all we can expect from our Presidents. Everyone of them made mistakes throughout there terms. Only the drug-infected cult of leftist malcontents think their Presidents are perfect and that is the sign to let us all know that the democratic ones were the worst in office and in their private life.
When 9/11 happen George Bush's destiny was fulfilled, he was the right man in the right moment to protect this Republic. When he made that surprise trip to Iraq for the Troops on that Thanksgiving Day and caught the world off guard, especially the treasonous media, it was brilliant strategy on his part. I always felt that GW was the best polka player in the world. Both him and Laura were the classiest couple to live in the White House since Ronald Reagan. I was always proud when I saw him and Laura together holding hands as if they were still dating. I miss them both and be damn the entire worthless ingrate world who attacked him everyday for eight years. This only goes to show the world that President George W. Bush was a man of inner strength and conviction.
What we have in the White House today is a complete disgrace on every level. Obama is an incompetent little boy playing in a big man's game. Obama could not handle one week of the intense political abuse that President Bush had to take for 8 long years and even now the cultist are still blaming him for their Messiah's total lack of life experience.
America will survive these democratic wife cheating, drug takers going back to FDR. The country will honor the conservative Presidents because they all had class and they didn't leave the White House with half the loot they could get their hands on.
I predict that 75 to 100 years from now that both Ronald Reagan and George W Bush will be honored on the Federal Mall with two magnificent Memorials. They both freed millions of people from tyrants, slavery and death. Obama will be remembered only because he was the first black President.
Thank you President Bush for being there when America needed you. Thank you Andrew for honoring an honest and decent American citizen that did his duty and let he let the chips fall were they did.
GW is a good man, a decent man, a Godly man; a less-neurotic man than ever filled the Presidency. I can forgive his mistakes knowing that!
Rethinking Bush?
After the new Supreme Court's decision today, we see the final heave of the a$$ r@pe that Bush Administration gave to democracy.
People need to realize: Corporations are not PEOPLE. The more that we accept otherwise… the more the value of actual human life is diminished.
It's great that Brown got elected, but why all the Bush worship. While it is true he isn't a communist like our present present-dent, Bush is no conservative either. By contrast, of course we miss him (or will) but we need conservatives, not RINOs.
Breitbart must be taking his cocaine again if he is praising this war criminal and retard, oh well I guess birds of a feather flock together
My admiration for President Bush has never waivered. The love he has for his country was and still is, always evident. He holds his head high and I miss him terribly. It seems the current administration can't go 24 hours without blaming GW for something/anything, while Mr Bush continues to hold his head high! I thank you Mr. President from the bottom of my heart for your wonderful service to your nation for 8 years. You're greatly missed!
I know a lot of your presidents claimed to be Christians. I strongly suspect that GW was one.
Refusing to defend oneself while vigorously defending your people is the mark of the greatest of the historically Godly leaders.
You had a great President there and the slimy self aggrandizing nature of his successor simply makes your previous President appear more mature and dignified than I would have thought possible.

At least the old media is consistent- consistently wrong and hopelessly biased:
Bush is Dumb: Better verbal SAT than Bradley, academic record than Gore, , Harvard MBA, etc.
Bush Lied: Do we have to rehash the litany of intelligence services which unanimously confirmed WMD?
Bush Condones Torture: Waterboarding, as we apparently practiced it, is not torture.
Bush's Policies Caused the Meltdown: The economy soared, with sub-6% unemployment, for most of his presidency. Fannie and Freddie's insolvency- fueled by PC policies of the dems- was the basis of the economic collapse.
These and more are all Big Lies the media pushed and many now accept.
Same with Obama: The old media is now actively promoting Big Lies (and more importantly, ignoring blatant BS almost daily) about Obama, except in this case to promote the ultra liberal and "cool" President. Disgusting, but expected.
Like many posters, I miss and will always remember Bush's humility, reverence for the office (ties mandatory in he oval office- love it!) and decency. George and Barbara did a great job with their kids. God bless President Bush!
Thanks for a great column.
"Bush signed the bank bailouts and thus committed constitutional malpractice. He selected winners and losers and the working people will pay for it all. He clearly stated my friends are not allowed to fail while you working people are not allowed to succeed."
Last I checked, I'm one of those working people with money in those banks. The banking system sits at the center of our system of free enterprise. It's success or failure affects us all. Besides the banks paid the money back. The only thing I would have done differently was, I would not have made all the banks take the money. We need to know who the the good bankers were, and who the knuckleheads were. And, as a condition of getting anything, the old management team, should have been fired. Period.
I can understand saving banks, which after all have citizens money in them. But to prop up the Auto companies to save the very unions that have sent them into bankruptcy, us beyond the Pale.
You oppose big government and yet you applaud bush?! I realize that the MSM and americans in general were incredibly disrespectful of the former president, but that doesn't mean that everything he did is suddenly laudable now that the democrats are failing as well. I'm somewhat disappointed that a lot of people seem to be falling back on the bush model of government. It wasn't that much different than Obama!! seriously. I hope that people keep addressing the fact that our economy is in shambles and our nation is deep in debt, not because of democrats or republicans, but the very behemoth government that they BOTH created hand in hand.
Thanks Dan. I'm putting my wallet where my mouth (or keyboard?) is. I signed up.
The day after the 2008 election I wrote a note to President Bush and thanked him for keeping us safe and for making me feel good to be an American. I told him that I never, ever wondered where his heart was or questioned his loyalty to America. In his response to me he stated that he was proud to have been President and of America. How I wish
this President could convince me that he has any of the same sentiments.
"The day after the 2008 election I wrote a note to President Bush and thanked him for keeping us safe and for making me feel good to be an American."
Did you thank him for 9/11, the Shoe Bomber, the shooting and murder of two Israeli tourists at LAX, the Anthrax mail attacks, the shooting of 5 women at the Greater Seattle Jewish Center, the Beltway Sniper's murder of 11 people, etc. and for misleading us into going to war with Iraq?
Hey Philo – how many times after 9/11 do you think another like event could have occurred – and didn't. Your president
says "lets wait, don't ruch to judgement" on the slaughter of American soldier by a terrorist who now has US Constitutional rights, by the way. Nevermind the fact that he went golfing while a jihadi was trying to blow up an aircraft over Detroit. give me a break
Bush lost to Obama? When was the 22nd Amendment repealed?

Well said as usual.
Andrew, the photos selected to accompany your article were poignant reminders of the noble heart of George Bush. Thank you for your good work, here and other places. Bush was not perfect, but none of us are. The MSM Bush-bashing and deliberate piling-on have revealed the low character and lower moral sense they possess. These photos reminded me of the character of President Bush. He never dodged blame and took the MSM vitriol to himself, humbly absorbing it. But, I have it on good authority that he who humbles himself will be exalted and, conversely, the MSM and other arrogant elitists who have exalted themselves at his expense are now being humbled. Thank you, Andrew. Thank you, President Bush.
Amen, Andrew. "W" is and will be remembered by putting his country FIRST, NOT HIS PARTY, radical friends or teleprompter. To Georgie boy, America's safety came first even thought the Lame Stream Media, RINOs and Democrats will never admit it. It's pretty easy folks: without a safe country you'll have chaos. Unfortunately, that's what his enemies, foreign and domestic, seek and want in America. George wouldn't have any of it. Thanks, W.
AMEN, AMEN, AND AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not a bad President, always a good man. I'd sit and have a glass of ice tea with him any time. Thanks to you sir for giving the rest of us an opportunity to add our voices to yours in remembering he IS a good man.
We can hope and pray that the last few months have made a change in peoples thinking. I do know it has made mine more focused! And folks will hopefully be looking at the content of a man's platform and not the party.
Only someone who is braindead would still be hyping a war criminal and torturer
History will treat this war criminal and torturer who destroyed the US well? Keep drinking your tea you clown
What planet are you on? George Bush was a man of decency and principles, hahahahaheeheehaha. you are so hilarious. Wow the teabaggers are out in force. Well thanks Dumbya for throwing us into the worst recession ever and your two wars. reminds one that even the worst and most odious people will still have their own cool aid drinkers
I m vey glad to have read this article. It has helped me gain a great deal of knowledge on this subject. I would love to read more of your articles
Andrew, thank you for your honest journalism, especially one year after all the hope-n-change. President Bush, thank you for your strength, honesty and patriotism.
Bush vindicated? no wonder the country is messed up when people like you believe the torturer in chief has been vindicated. Keep drinking your kool aid
Thank you for writing this. Thank you, President Bush. I am a former Democrat who was proud to vote for you in 2000 (first time I ever voted for a republican) and again in 2004. I miss your leadership, your vision and your trustworthiness. I always knew that you cared about America and her people and troops before yourself.
Nice,
I agree with you, in his last week of presidency I was sure to send him a letter expressing my sincere thanks as well. People dwell on the bad things someone does (even though I don't hold him responsible for some of the nonsense blamed on him) but the reality is that< Bush kept us safe, after 9/11 security was Bush's highest concern. I felt safe with Bush in office, never once did I question what his motives were. With Obama, I don't know whats going on, I certainly don't think he cares about the security of our country, and if Scott Brown hadn't been elected we'd be even more screwed. I may be a republican, but I also know when someone deserves a heartfelt thanks, in this case George Bush definitely does. So I, like Mr. Breitbart say… Thank you President Bush, for keeping this country's best interest in your heart and keeping us safe in the best possible way.
[...] flurry of Bush Appreciation pieces were published over the week. You can actually Thank W here Comments [...]
I never felt lectured or talked down to by President Bush. With Obama, the arrogance, and the sense that he's pissed that we're too stupid to support his "progressive" agenda. Lord, I miss him. I wear a "Dubya" baseball jersey often just waiting for someone to make a crack….
Too bad the republicans let him get hammered by the press and the idiots in charge now for so many years. He was worthy of defense then, and his legacy surely is.
Are unions people? Obama, the supposed champion for years of public financing, then reneged (that's a pattern with him, isn't it?) when Mc Cain challenged him to limit himself to public financing, then he collects millions from all over the world via the internet, tens of millions from SEIU alone, etc, etc. A corporation most certainly IS PEOPLE. Nothing more than a collection of people who provide a good or service someone wants or needs and return profit for the owners and/or shareholders. Lefties like you may hate capitalism (it causes so much cognitive dissonance for you, obviously), but to deny that a corporation has free speech simply shows again the totalitarian strain of leftist socialism. Capitalism = evil to you guys, so of course, they should not be able to have a collective voice, unlike the unions, right? You guys are pathetic, and are losing. Hope you enjoyed your one year of hope and change.

Enjoyed the posts..
President Bush was and still is a true gentleman who loves his country The United States of America. I am glad he didn't respond to lunacy of MSM maligning his presidency at every turn. Most of those publications that once we used to subscribe are no longer fit to be used as darling pooches wee-wee pads.
I know my name will be on Mr.Bush's Presidential Library as a charter member, show your support and donate. Then look for your name to appear at huffpost as anti something….
The trash disposal helps break down the various wastes such as consumable products and during the process at times pieces get stuck in various places of this appliance or in the drains of the sink. One of the main problems with this is that it creates a perfect breeding place for bacteria, mold and mildew which are very dangerous to your health. Of course, we won’t even mention the bad smells that this situation creates almost from the very beginning.
