The day before election day 2008, when all political commentary was flowing toward the candidates running for office, I used my column space to write a heartfelt thank you to President Bush (“An Election Day Note: Thanks, President Bush“).
At the time even Republicans were using every trick in the book to distance themselves from the 43rd president. Even before the Florida recount of 2000 I told Wall Street Journal columnist John Fund that the Democratic Party — then led by the Clintons, John Podesta and a team of Whitewater-to-Lewinsky era smear artists including Sidney Blumenthal — would use President Bush as an example to Republicans as a thorough payback for Impeachment.

Florida was a sign of things to come as the left recognized that Bush’s friendly “uniter-not-a-divider” persona could easily be turned on its head. Ted Kennedy’s rejection of bipartisan spirit after he and Bush crafted the “No Child Left Behind” legislation foretold how all Democrats, save for Sen. Joe Lieberman, would treat the 43rd president: with graceless contempt.
The mainstream media did everything in its power to reinforce the Clintons’ revenge wishes and the far left’s political desires in making sure that Bush’s humanity was constantly on the ropes. The easy media template of Bush being stupid and evil were propaganda staples of the period of 2000 to 2008, with a disturbingly short reprieve after 9/11, when the Democrats had to temporarily suspend hostilities to feign patriotism as they held hands and sang songs. We all know how long that lasted.

The basis of the Bush attack machine was crass political opportunism mixed with revenge, and Bush’s greatest shortcoming was that he rejected defending himself and instead committed himself to doing what he thought was in the best interests of the country. I always believed in the man’s sincerity, whether I agreed with him or not. No amount of Goebbels-like rants from the media could persuade me that George W. Bush wasn’t a decent man. And my perpetual defense of him was and is less a defense of his policies — many of which, including his wartime leadership, I completely supported — but as protective mechanism against the inordinately rigged political and media systems, the Democrat Media Complex, as I have long called it.
No, the simple fact was that media deliberately and malevolently sustained a false caricature of Bush in its pages and on its broadcasts in order to bog down the leader of the free world when he needed all the help he could get, and a time when the country was in great danger. The continuum of media-legitimized Bush hatred directly resulted in the Obama candidacy which was framed by the media as the antidote to Bush’s “toxicity.”

One year into the Obama Administration, one thing is clear. The American presidency is a tough job. One can only wonder how much more successful President Bush’s presidency could have been if the media mandarins weren’t hell bent on providing a pathway for their favored Democrats to regain power. Now that the Democrats control everything it’s interesting to note how closely Obama is toeing Bush’s line on the war in Afghanistan, and how unsuccessful the new president is in rationalizing giving rights to enemy combatants. Maybe Bush wasn’t so dumb after all.
That’s what I’ve thought all along. A year after he left office, it looks more and more like others will now not only start appreciating our 43rd president, they might start wishing they helped him when he had the toughest job in the world and they could only wish him ill.
Once again: thanks, President Bush.

"The day before election day 2008, when all political commentary was flowing toward the candidates running for office, I used my column space to write a heartfelt thank you to President Bush (”An Election Day Note: Thanks, President Bush“)."
Andrew, today, the day after the special election 2010, I'd like to take a moment to thank you, and everyone in your organization(s). I'd like to congratulate you all for picking up the torch, and for becoming the new standard bearer.
The words thank you simply do not suffice, but they are the only words we have in our language.
Bush signed the bank bailouts and thus committed constitutional malpractice. He selected winners and losers and the working people will pay for it all. He clearly stated my friends are not allowed to fail while you working people are not allowed to succeed.
My hero is George
George Washington could have been king instead he chose to lead a nation of freedom.
No party or politician can claim this true greatness.
It will be a long time before he is given the credit he deserves by history, but hindsight is 20/20. He likely saved millions of lives here and in the Middle East by going on the offensive against terrorism and the Taliban, and by shutting down Saddam's mass-murdering regime, all with one hand tied behind his back by the liberal media. Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of African lives he saved through his aid programs. Someday he'll get the credit he deserves for all of that.
The best thing we can do right now is to teach our children about who he really was, and what he really did. Tell them to ignore the media and educators that demonize him. We can't all be an Andrew Breitbart, but we can all spread the truth in our own homes.
/Thank you Andrew. I couldn't have said it better. I miss this man's decency. One thing is true in life; "what goes around, comes around". I believe as eyes are opened and stomachs are purged from the kool-aid, this man of integrity will be exonerated.
Thank you President Bush. I respected you then, I respect you now.
TheresaAK
I would tend to agree with you regarding Washington, but I also happen to believe that Bush has some qualities that others currently in power don't have: honour, integrity, decency, and love of country to name a few.
If Bush took the stance you cite: " He clearly stated my friends are not allowed to fail while you working people are not allowed to succeed. "; then what is Obama's stance? "My friends are not allowed to fail, while you white folks are going to be screwed?' Perhaps.
If I may quote a line from my favorite movie, Bravheart:
"History is written by those who have hanged Hero's"
Bush is the epitome of that.
Andrew, it's far from over.
While the future of Congress may remain in the hands of the the American people, there is a man in the Executive Branch who is — to your phrase — hellbent on operationalizing the dictates of the world through his foreign policy.
Afghanistan, and Haiti are just the latest examples; that Nobel Peace Prize was more than just a bribe.
We have to pay more attention to how Obama is creating dysfunction and crippling our military, how he's using he's his foreign agenda to implement a "civilian surge" to forge nationbuilding in other countries.
America's interests should be served first, before all, before any.
This is why I so miss Bush.
There was no question as to where his loyalities were.
With Obama's first interview on 1/26 with Al-Arabiya, we've known where Obama is going.
America is the trade-off for him, as are our troops who are sacrificing their lives for us.
We CANNOT let the ICC get ahold of our men.
Bush took on extrondinarily tough circumstances and provided leadership.
Obama has yet to truly take ownership of his circumstances and is proving to be less than a competent leader.
Thank you Andrew Brietbart for dearming the "Old Media" and giving us an alternative.
No amount of "spit & Polish" will coverup the shortcomings of Barak Hussien Obama.
Thank you, Andrew, for this and the other great pieces presented for today that have been so respectful to President Bush and his honorable service. I miss his leadership as Commander in Chief and remember how nice it was to have such respect for the man who was leading our country. It's a feeling of true security that is missing now, and your comments bring back the memory of that security. God bless his service and forgive us for failing to adequately appreciate President Bush.
President George W. Bush will always be a true American hero.
BO has selected his winners and losers and the non union private sector working people have been declared the losers.
The democrats can not deny this their actions have spoken.
You must understand I rightfully blame both government parties for this crap.
I still find myself defending President Bush & no I am a Conservative that didn't agree with all his social & economic decisions but I never questioned his belief that he was doing what was right for the American people. There is so many lies told about President Bush that it is impossible to put them all out. My guess is the majority of Americans wish we had him back right now as our country is under seige & make no mistake we are. Two terrorist attacks on our soil & a president that denies terrorism, a director of Homeland security who believes that the system worked.
Today is the first day-after election of Scott Brown last night-that I have had real faith that we might be able to stop obama & company from destroying this America we love as President Bush did. We need to all take lessons from him, he stood for America no matter what.
I understand completely.
We are on the same page.
Both parties have sold US out.
WE, the People have become inconsequential in the scheme of things. Granted, yesterday in MA was a wakeup call, but by November, both parties in their hubris will have forgotten it, and it will be back to business as usual. That business, the business of the people, is for elected officials to grab their share of the pie, stay in office as long as they can, then take the loot and scoot.
Nothing short of looting the treasury.
You love George Washington? So do I.. and he was loyal to America, unlike Obama.
"…the duty and interst of the United States require, that they should with sincereity and good faith adopt and pursue a conduct friendly and impartial toward the beliigerant Powers;" – GW, April 22, 1793
"The Nation, which indulges towards another an habitual hatred, or an habitual fondness, is in some degree a slave. It is a slave to its animosity or to is affection, either of which is sufficient to lead it astray from its DUTY and its INTEREST."
Obama's answer?
From Foreign Affairs, July/Aug 2007:
"To renew American leadership in the world, I will strengthen our common security by investing in our common humanity…"
From NPP remarks:
"..I am at the beginning, and not the end, of mylabors on the world stage."
From Cairo:
"Give our interdependence, any world order that elevates one nation or group of people over another will inevitably fail."
This is from an earlier post on Mr W
While "W" was better then the democrat alternative, he, by not being a true Conservative, allowed the left to define him. Many of his policies, (failure to secure the border, medicare drug coverage, Ted Kennedy education bill, Norm Manetta at transportation, and the pathetic "Homeland Security" bureaucracy, just to name a few.), just made us scratch our Conservative heads and wonder aloud….Would Algore or Jacques Kerry have been much different???
So the left/MSM hated him over Iraq and his pro Life stand…. the Right disapproved of the above list, so he had no real support in the end…. I think there is a obvious lesson for Conservatives here….
I read both articles, the one written in 2008 and this one. I, too, didn't agree with everything President Bush did, but he kept our country safe from 9/11/2001 until his last day in elected office. He wasn't as smooth a talker as our current president, but I do believe he loved this country and did the best he could as a good, decent public servant. He deserves more respect and credit than he got. And for the poster who talked about how he signed the bailouts, you're right, but the dems in Congress passed it to him before he got it, so there's lots of blame to be spread around. And if it weren't for a handful of democrats, we would never have been in this economic mess in the first place.
As long these type of blogs remain open to the public I for one will not let people forget.
This was not a republican victory. This was a unaffiliated victory for there was not enough republicans to win election. Brown must keep his promise or he will be gone that is the power of being unaffiliated. Without a party to re-elect the politician must keep their word or be gone.
41% still don’t see the tea party favorably for they see it as a republican movement.
This is the rebirth of 912 and non partisan stand an unaffiliated stand. A non partisan makes the politician pay for your vote and forces them to keep their word. It is your choice we can rebuild 912 and claim our victory or this will become history. I said from the beginning we can do this one person at a time and we can but we need non partisans. A republican nor democrat can effectively attack an independent for they need independents to win.
My hero is George and he spoke against political parties.
I am part of 912 and I have no love for BO.
I also have no love for political parties for they have bankrupted our country.
I also would agree with your sentiments there. Mine are the same. We are on the same page.
Agree or disagree with Bush policies…one thing is certain. He didn't mask his policies for political expediency. He put it all right there to see and took the heat for EVERY decision.
Thank you, Andrew, and thank you "Big" site contributors for paying respect to man that served us honorably by doing the toughest job in the world.
Ask yourself why you feel compelled to bring up Obama when he wasn't mentioned.
The public reads our words and with each passing day our words become more powerful. I read your post every day and your words are strong.. We in our own way will save this country one person at a time.
VERY true. Look at the lies that pervaded after WWII and our unforgivable alliance with Stalin! The sick and evil forces manipulating this country's foreign policy is nothing new, indeed.
That is easy.
For the same reason that the left brings up Bush, when faced with any question.
For the same reason you bring up Jew on every thread, regardless of the topic.
With you, it is always a Jew conspiracy. Could it be, that at the end of the day, it was really a Bush, Obama, Jew conspiracy?
Thanks. Great piece.
Great article, AB, as usual. As a native Texan and resident of Waco (near Crawford), the Bush-bashing was and still is especially painful. Even our local newspaper, the Tribune-Herald, got its jolllies by raking him over the coals, daily. The paper is no longer owned by Cox (i.e. Atlanta Journal), thank God, but was bought last year by a local businessman with a conservative bent. Better late than never!
Since I read everything you write and all your "Big" sites, permit me to humbly correct a grammatical mistake in this piece and another recent one: "…Obama is TOWING Bush's line on the war in Afghanistan…" The word is TOEING, as in "toe the line" or "toe the mark." Pardon my grammar fetish. It may have been simply a matter of unwarranted spellcheck dependency. Your admirer,
President Bush deserves this country's sincerest apologies. He kept us safe and in return he was mocked and hated. It's our great shame. If it's any consolation Mr Bush, I always thought you were a good man and never questioned your love of country. You are missed by many.
In other news:
I can't believe the spin from the WH and MSM is that Brown won due to the "same anger that swept Obama into the White House." Yep, unbelievably, Brown won because Bush was a bad president.
Democrats: The Party of Tone Deaf!
Thank you.
As are yours.
Words mean things my friend. You are correct, we will save this country, one person at a time. We will show Madame Pelosi exactly what astroturf means. By the time we are through, she will wish she was in the back of Bill Clintonsold El Camino pickup, with the astroturf in the bed.
(You might have to think back on that reference……….)
Well said, Andrew! I always felt safe under President Bush, not so much since BO took office. Karma is a B*TCH and the liberals are getting what they deserved. The miracle in Massachusetts last night gave me so much hope that the same miracle could very well happen in California in November 2010 — Boxer must go ASAP.
.
Bush kept us safe and looks better and better the longer the Obama-Pelosi-Reid axis of weasels are in charge.
.
Patting myself on the back. I predicted it.
Bush didn't blame everyone else for his failures.
Bush didn't credit himself for successes that weren't his.
Bush wasn't awarded a Nobel Prize for being in office for one month.
OH no Dizzyhoff did some one say something bad about obowmao the destroyer and king asshat, please try to get over it, no wait on second thought don't. obozo's a commie deal with it.
She claim we were "astro turf" some one said a long time ago and I can't find them to give them credit "we are not astro votes"..
I can say now America is awake and fighting back. maybe not fully awake but we are gaining ground.
this is politics and you point out truth at every opportunity, even if you talking about mud.
you're not getting it .. Obama is a phenomenon beyond political parties.
He is a global socialist and has abdicated his duties as president because he prefers to protect the interests of other nations over ours.
INTERPOL is one example.
No, we're not awake. Research the UN's Doctrine R2P.
another 6 months and we will have our answer. We must keep posting the truth and fighting their lies, both parties brought us to this cliff of slavery and we will see if people will chose slavery and jump or turn and fight.
Both parties are global socialist and they have the power and the only way to fight back is to attack their power base which is The party members, with out members they have no power to do their evil.
Obama goes beyond American political parties and America's borders.
Go ask Dean that same question when he mentioned Bush over Scott Brown's win:
http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/blogs/b...
Andrew, you need to post the speeches by Bush after the 2004 Tsunami and Obama after the Haitian earthquake to show the difference between them.
It's striking.
I completely agree with you, Andrew! I'll also say this…if I were his mother I'd want to strangle every mendacious member of the press I could lay my hands on. But that's just because I love my son so much, and I know his mom does too. She had much to be proud of.
you forget Obama has more power through his Executive Orders and by bypassing congress by embedding his global intents through the bureaucracy and his foreign affairs budgets.
He's operationalizing his "strenghtening our common security by investing in our common humanity" without Congress.
..and he's doing it by reminding America of "her values" to help humanity and blah.
We're going to have to do more than just vote.
I feel strongly that Bush was just another big government phony. He is the reason we lost to Obama. He is, at best a RINO/neo-con. The sooner we forget about him and find real free-market, small government, liberty minded candidates, the sooner we will start to win elections.
The tea party movement is about liberty from government – we are no longer anything close to a free country, we have the most prisoners on earth, more than even china, a communist dictatorship. Republicans who forget that we are still fighting for true liberty will lose everytime. Also, Bush had control of all house of government and squandered it on more spending, more government, and more attacks on our constitutional rights. I voted for him and I am sorry I did.
I miss President Bush every day. I miss his decency, his obvious loyalty to this country, his pride in the troops, his respect for his parents, his adoration of Laura, his respect for the office of the President, and his quiet strength when the gates of hell roared against him for eight+ years. I'm convinced that given enough time, historians will treat him fairly, especially as the glow of The One diminishes.
what are you seeing?
When we look to blame, we the American people are to blame. We slumbered and did not hold our Representatives and Presidents accountable for years. There in lies the rub…we the people are the ones who put them into power and allowed their abuses. It takes what we are going through right now to draw us back to the original document that is suppose to be our foundation. I for one am grateful to be a part of this pivotal point in history, where we either take our country back or let it slide into socialism. We were born for such a time as this….
Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country……. and bring it back to is original intent. We the people must be engaged and never forget from where we have been. We must elect people "who are almost reluctant to serve" to steal from Sarah Palin. Then we can bring true reformation to our country.
If we slumber progressivism will rear its ugly head again! In both parties again! With all of that said, I do appreciate many things that GW did as POTUS, his progressivism I could have done without. But without it, the American people would not have awakened. Onward!
I never understood the constant attacks on Bush. He clearly made some errors, but was man enough to stand up to the decisions he did make. Obama, on the other hand, needs to stand up and take his licks without the constant blame the predecessor strategy that people are tiring of.
I find it amusing that even the unbalanced Ed Schultz, on MSNBC this morning, admitted that Bush was tougher. I almost fell over when he said that.
Great article!!!
The government parties gave him that power.. and thus destruction of the parties will take tat power away.. the congress is an equal power in our government, but the congress gave their power away to form a dicatatorship.
He was the consummate politician…"reluctant to serve", selfless, a rare man. That is what we need now more than ever in our country.
When I put it that way, it almost scares me….where are they?
I was no huge fan of Bush43, I believe he was head and sholders above MrGore or MrKerry. Georges' problem was he never saw a spending bill he didn't like, taking us into big deficts. Nothing like now but big at the time. He did keep us safe, never vacationed in Hawaii, and played less golf.
can you blame the people who are busy trying to survive. yes. , but the question is should we when we elected people to do us no harm, but they did any way. We are both educating people now and we are now connected to people across this country and now if we fail it will be the peoples fault.
A marvelous way of living and I agree 100% with all you've said….I prayed for Pres. Bush everyday that I could. He was and still is My President. Men like him are hard to find. Yes, one day the Truth about him will come to light. His wife is a lucky gal and his parents have every right to be forever proud of him…I know God is walking with him.
I didn't follow # 43 as close as I should have, but I appreciate his heavy hand on terrorism, more than I do the tippy-toeing thats going on now.
Just for the record, if I were on the Detroit flight, other passengers would have been pulling me off of a bloodied Nigerian.
I agree with everything except the last part. The Bush haters are completely irrational and will never give him credit for anything no matter what. I've always thought it was just sick how the media treated and still treats Bush. George W. Bush and his family have always been wonderful, kindhearted people.
Our 43rd President – George W. Bush – vindicated.
God bless you, President Bush.
Thank you for writing such a wonderful piece about a great man. I miss his sense of humor, the ability to laugh at himself and most of all his decency. Him and his lovely wife had so much more class than the couple in the white house now. HIstory will show the truth.
I think we are turning a corner for another 100 years of liberty in this nation. Maybe I am to optimistic…but then optimism carries one forward. I know you barbarian will never forget as I never will. I may have thirty years left on this earth and I plan to put all of my efforts towards maintaining political awareness of Progressivism and teaching my grandchildren (if I am so lucky to have some) their American heritage.
My thoughts exaclty DontTreadOnMe!
It was sad when President Bush departed Washington DC that cold day one year ago and was heckled relentlessly with every terrible name in the book by hundreds of people. As we watched him leave, those of us in the military quietly saluted and our hearts went with him. After 24 years in the army there are only three comanders-in-chief who we knew really cared for us. They all happened to be republicans…………………..
I kept a list of Bush's accomplishments as it became apparent that AP and the rest of the Democrat media was trying to destroy him. Among that list are these items: he took the fight to the enemy and kept us safe for the rest of his term; employment hit an all time high in U.S. history (per the BLS), productivity hit an all time high; the stock market hit an all time high; he freed millions in the Middle East and set up a huge military presence in the middle of that mess; he freed the black African nation of Liberia; Lybia gave up it's nuclear program (which now sits here in Oak Ridge, TN); personal wage growth, personal income and personal spending hit all time highs; we DID NOT have to worry about the federal govt. taking away our personal freedom and liberty! Just a few items on a very long list. And yes, being the first president to land on an aircraft carrier in a fighter jet while in office is ON the list!
the public is quick to go back to surviving and I don't blame them, but I know there are many of us now who always keep the flames turned on the politicians. I know we don't agree alot but we have a common cause… the truth and the constitution … and for me that is all we need to work together.
Well said, well said.
Amen. We probably agree on more than not. I understand your contempt for the present two party system, it may definitely need to be dismantled. But as you know I feel we need to start within the system. Keep up the good work barbarian! You are a good man!
we might not get what we both want but it is becoming clear the politicians are learning to listen.
Yes, the media set out to trash him, and he didn't do enough to defend himself, but before we go getting too weepy over our recent departed leader, let us remember some of the reasons why he (and the GOP) lost the support of conservatives, so that hopefully this will not be a phyrric victory.
- Protectionist trade bill not long after entering office
- "No child left behind", which allowed the state to encroach even further into the classrooms of our children
- Medicare prescription coverage
- Failure to reign in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
- Having benefited from a brilliant campaign of conquest in Iraq, he allowed Paul Bremer to cast one of the largest armies on the planet onto the street to fend for itself, something anyone familiar with the Thirty Years War would know was foolish.
The first 4 were abetted by and benefited liberals, and the last was just stupidity. Let us not forget.
Great piece. thanks for writing it.
The dems aren't done bashing Bush yet. There is going to be a lot of mistakes for them to continue to make, and then try and push it off on Bush Cheney. Obama already said after last nights smack down the the anger the voters are feeling goes back over the last eight years, Once again taking a swipe at W…read: Scott Brown's Christmas Gift…at…

Very true! ;^)
"Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor."
Give this a few more months – the country will be demanding a mulligan – Obama is a disaster.
Bush was competant and steady. Obama – not so much.
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1209/Bush_...
I read Andrew’s Farewell to Bush from last November.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2008/11...
It’s amazing to compare the anti-Bush comments from last year with these mostly pro-Bush comments. Granted, the audience for BigJ differs from RealClearPolitics but…what a difference a year under reign of King O makes.
Also, Andrew, I have to give you a lot of credit for being an original thinker in the face of the heard mentality of the main stream media.
You are somewhat mistaken with your assesment. He was blocked from reinging in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by Congress. No Child Left Behind forced states to apply metrics to evaluate how education is doing. It is far from perfect but it at least addressed the problem head on. The trouble with any new program or regulation is the ability of the regulated to game the system. That is the current state of affairs in education now. As far as the last item how would you have controlled an Armed Bathist Loayal to Sadaam Army? There were mistakes made but I have not heard any brilliant counter proposals. It is one thing to gripe but unless you can point out how a different approach would have worked it is just complaining.
I do not disagree with all of your assesments but I also have a sneaking suspicion that Bush did not repeal many of the Bills sent to him because his own so-called loyal Congressmen were holding Defense funding hostage to thier own selfish interests. I have no proof but the latest dealings in Washington have made me consider that theory.
Thank you!! Your words are so gracious and true
You're so right. He is simply an honorable man. And when the lies were told of him, he never defended himself because he believe the American people were too intelligent to insult them that way. He believed we knew a lie when it was in front of us. Unlike Algore and Gi Kerry who believed we were so stupid their lies would be taken as Gospel by all of the people.
I have a bumper sticker "I Miss W.". And sure do!
It was refreshing to see an "American" President at the White House last week v the Socialist and the Playboy, made me feel like I was still an American.
When President Bush got up and spoke to the American people, I knew he was telling it as it was. When Obama speaks, he is always saying one thing and doing another. That tells me a lot about both men.
Thank you for expressing the thoughts and feelings of so many of us who recognized the basic goodness of President Bush. We have very few ways to convey our feelings in any significant way. So many of us loved him and were pained by the assaults that he suffered from so many directions. When he smiled we smiled and when he cried we knew there was good reason to cry. Thank you, President Bush, from one of the citizens from across the country who feel the same sentiments that Mr. Breitbart has expressed here.
I wasn't real happy when the RNC pushed Bush so hard, I didn't know if I could trust him because I did NOT trust the RNC. But Gore was out of the question. And still is. Then came 9/11 and I saw the look on the President's face, sitting in a Kindergarten class, honoring hiswife's education priority, and being told we were under attack. That look on his face is etched in my mind. Somehow I just knew he'd be the man to defend us. Fast forward, Obama gets knews of jihadist murder at Ft Hood. He gives a shout-out, smiling, before he gets around to our national rage and grief. Fast forward to Chistmas. Obama doesn't even bother to address the issue – he's on vacation in Hawaii. I can only imagine the look on his face, since we never saw it. Probably something like annoyance at being disturbed.
We are awakening. That's what matters. But it won't matter if we don't keep fighting. Let's support the best candidates we can – like Brown – as we can on a national level, and let's mobilize to hold our own representatives accountable on the local level.
I live in PA. Who's with me to remove scumbag Specter and replace him with a real candidate?
Good piece, as always.
I've posted on several of these threads: I didn't agree with a bit of what he did (he turned his back on conservatives), but at least I knew where he stood.
He did try to tackle some big issues, like reforming Social Security and preventing the housing bubble bursting. But the scumbag Dems stopped it. They didn't have to agree with how he wanted to do it, but they couldn't work with him to make it happen?
It's like now. OK, Obama wants to reform health care. I keep hearing that the Republicans had their chance and didn't do it. That may be so, but it was this president who decided to take it on. At that point, the Republicans are not shut out of the process because they didn't tackle it in the past. Both parties work together to come up with a solution that WORKS. Instead they were completely removed from the process and then the Democrats had the balls to whine that no Republican in the Senate will support their piece of crap legislation. For Social Security, the Dems just politicized it and refused to work on the problem. And now we're in even worse shape for it. But Bush tried, and I supported him 100% in that effort.
I don't agree with TARP either… but at that point, it just seemed like Bush was looking for a bridge until assmunch's administration took over.
I so look forward to a little less than 5 years from now when, on October 15, 2015, I hopefully have the privilege to join President George W. Bush in returning to Iraq to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the signing of their new consitution. Granted, there is no guarantee that the seeds of democracy that GW and our brave soldiers planted will truly take root. But I wouldn't bet against it. A taste of freedom is insatiable.
I suspect that if such a gathering takes place in Iraq, GW wouldn't make any grandiose speech (ala Bama) but instead, along with Laura, will just smile with a sincere look of gratitude and accomplishment. What I wouldn't give to be a tiny head in the photo of the masses gathered for that grand occasion.
Andrew, thanks much for reawakening that dream of mine to be there.

i ditto on everything except obama bein a 'smooth talker'… he is s a smooth PROMPTER READER only. when he is left alone w/ out one, he stumbles worse than most ppl.
Even if he was slow to admit to some mistakes (like the initial Iraq strategy), you're right. He admitted he made them, and he stood by others, no matter how unpopular they were. For that, I give him credit. I do believe that he did what he honestly believed was the right thing to do.
That's not the same as Obama… Obama just does crap because its an ideological decision. He has a set of warped beliefs and then he shoehorns all of his terrible decisions into that. But Bush obviously didn't shoehorn his solutions into a conservative or liberal viewpoint. I think he listened to his advisers, for good or bad, and then made the best decision he could with that information.
Thank you for this nice piece on George Bush. He was a wonderful president to me and to my family. I believe he is a decent and caring man who did the best job possible during a very trying time for our country. We have a couple of things we disagree with him on, but overall we think he rocks. We truly miss him, his wonderful family and his pets. We miss Dick Cheney and Ms. Rice too. He made us proud of our president and our country and we felt safe when he was in office. We hope that his brother runs in the next election. One of the things I like about him is his humble good humor and joking nature while still being able to be serious. He is genuine!
Bush signed the so called bank bail out or TARP because doing doing less would have been disasterous and irresponsible. The government under democratic leadership forced the banks to make these risky loans and has the responsibility to support the banks and provide economic stability. Have you ever head of FDIC? The banks have since paid the monies back with considerable interest. So, how about reading a few books..perhaps visit your local library before spouting off with the usual ill informed propaganda you picked up when half a$$ listening to the MSM while you were playing with your X box.
Before you start bashing me, I am only asking the question because I believe it is essential to our success. Are we going down the same road the Democrats went down? I try to insult policy and try to only be offended by rudeness. Examples are cash for clunkers as policy I hate and Obama's comments about shutting up and not telling him how to mop. However, a few times I have found myself doing the same thing we have criticized the left for doing to Bush. Even though this is a conservative site and clearly supports conservative principles we need to keep steadfast and remember that just because they did it does not give us the right to do it. Two lessons I learned from my mom relate to this situation. "You will not be paid for good grades, your future expects you to do well." and "I don't care what your friends curfew is, you are not your friends." Our future expects us to maintain the highest sense of honor and just because the Dems did it doesn't mean we should.
Just something to think about, make sure we use class and civility.
THANK YOU! Seven of those bailed out banks held 75% of the total bank assets of the entire US at the time.
Thomas Sowell summed up my feelings on this very well –
http://townhall.com/columnists/ThomasSowell/2008/...
"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac do not deserve to be bailed out, but neither do workers, families and businesses deserve to be put through the economic wringer by a collapse of credit markets, such as occurred during the Great Depression of the 1930s."
"Free market" principles will wash out the RINOs et al. I will be needing to call my state and local Republican Party chairpeople to keep them (hopefully!) from making deals with each other to nominate a candidate instead of holding a primary so THE PEOPLE can choose who they like as a candidate. I will tell them I left the GOP three years ago because of crap like this and the crap candidates it gave us. We have 7 possible candidates, and the people should vote. The people will choose a conservative. The GOP "leaders" will just pick whoever they think is "electable" and make us choose between whoever that person is or a Democrat/Working Families Socialist.
Ask yourself, "Can I make my rating into a -80 by the weekend?"

Hats off to the man ..much respect ..and to you for this article ..God bless George W Bush and family
I think that G W was the man that we needed at the time if for no other reason that he understood the entire situation and was willing to "bite the bullet" for our defense. I will take his swaggar anytime to the current metrosexual male syndrome that is currently permeating the current political scene. Yes, he didn't do everything correctly, he tried to be a little to bi-partisan (Kennedy bill etc.), but history will judge him better than people are currently attributing to him, that he was a true gentleman, he is honest , has a deep respect and admiration of and for his country
Ps one of my favorites moments in his presidency was his Sept 21 2004 UN speech ..all the commentary of the day was how he would try to smooth things over…boy was that wrong !!..he gave them hell!!! and it was you are either on the right side or the wrong side.. I loved him for that..
It was clear in 2008, the press was going to abandon all pretenses of "objectivity" and they were going to get a Democrat in the Whitehouse at any and all cost. The Bush bashing was relentless, hypocritcal and totally partisan by the media. We the people are not stupid however. We quit buying their garbage newspapers. We quit watching their hopelessly biased news programs. They started going out of business, or in the case of others have dramatically smaller market share. We the people said never again. If our press is that bad, then they should and are going out of business. Good riddance. Bush surely could have done a better job in my view. But when Obama does the EXACT same thing, the liberal media gushes about how smart he is. Did the liberal media think we would not notice? Please liberal media, go out of business as soon as is feasibly possible.
Andrew, where have you been all my life?
Thanks for what you said about Bush. Visit your site everyday.

I also must give my thanks to Pres. George W Bush. A solid man of integrity, character and conviction who went to work every day and focused to the tasks at hand, while enduring the vitrol of the liberal press machine and the American people who blindly bought into it. Even now the Dems show their lack of the same by blaming their failures on a man who hasn't even been around since the election (heh!) They just figured they were smarter than the people and figured they could pass through their agenda with Gestapo tactics, and no one would take notice. I hope that is a lesson to all of us when some politician comes around with the mantra, CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE…without explaining what that change is going to mean. It looks like some of those who voted for Obama are not too happy with their CHANGE.
