The co-chair of the ‘Cry Wolf” project, Professor Peter Dreier, E.P Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics and Urban & Environmental Policy Program director at Occidental College, is a sort of email buddy of mine. If by “email buddy” I mean someone who once sent me a snide one-line missive with a link to an alternative weekly paper political cartoon depicting me in a negative light.
I’ll show you that email shortly but first background on why Professor Dreier is in my life:
In late September of 2009 two weeks into the beginning of the explosive James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles ACORN video scandal, an academic study critical of media coverage of ACORN came out from Peter Dreier and Christopher Martin, professor of journalism, University of Northern Iowa, Department of Communication Studies. The study, “Manipulating the Public Agenda: Why ACORN Was in the News, or,What the News Got Wrong,” was billed as “[a]n independent study by two prominent academics” that purported to have “found repetition of unverified allegations and distortions was the rule in national reporting of a purported ‘voter fraud’ scandal involving the community organizing group ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) during the 2008 presidential campaign.”

Peter Dreier, E.P Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics and Urban & Environmental Policy Program director at Occidental College
When I first saw the study’s press release, I naively reached out to Professor Martin to offer him and Dreier a place at our new website Big Government to act as ongoing ombudsmen of our ACORN story. We were cognizant that a left-leaning media would likely come to ACORN’s defense, so why not provide a platform for two professors claiming the media had wronged ACORN in its previous coverage of the organization to show that we were doing everything in our power to play the story fair? Recall, we proactively offered unedited transcripts and audio of O’Keefe and Giles work to show that the edited videos did not take things out of context.
After conferring with his colleague, Professor Martin declined my offer:
Andrew,
Thanks for calling earlier today. Peter and I are going to decline your offer for a blog post on biggovernment.com. We’d rather have people see the entire study (which, for the record, was completed before the current ACORN story emerged, so it doesn’t address it directly).
We appreciate your interest in transparency, and you are welcome to carry a link to the whole report and share it with your readers.

Not long after receiving Professor Martin’s email I understood why he and Dreier would hesitate to participate in a fair and open manner. The two took to Editor and Publisher to write a defense of ACORN. E&P, which bills itself as “the authoritative journal covering all aspects of the North American newspaper industry, including business, newsroom, advertising, circulation, marketing, technology, online and syndicates,” failed to point out that Professor Dreier is on the ACORN advisory committee, a point that Patrick Frey, also known as the blogger Patterico, pointed out.
The Dreier and Martin study was anything but “independent.” Not only was Dreier an ACORN advisor, he had co-authored a Los Angeles Times editorial with Bon Bon Hurd, an ACORN employee whom Big Government caught on tape admitting the organization is deeply political despite its non-profit status and that it intentionally got President Obama elected. Dreier and Hurd were also co-signatories on a LEFT-WING petition, Planning for a Livable City: An Open Letter to the next Director of the Los Angeles Department of City Planning.
Also, in the midst of the furious spin created by ACORN chief organizer Bertha Lewis, Prof. Dreier wrote an ACORN apologia in the LA Times regurgitating the same false talking points created by Bertha herself. The Times identified him only as “Professor of Politics at Occidental College,” and dutifully linked to his “study” on ACORN coverage. Later, with egg dripping from their old-media jowls, they were forced to correct Dreier’s propaganda but they still refuse to disclose that he has been on the ACORN advisory committee for years.
Either Dreier is the stupidest man in the world, trying to pass himself off as a dispassionate academic “independent,” or he cynically understands that his peers in higher education are like-minded ideologues, and that using the veneer of academic respectability to push the progressive cause was the point of Gramsci’s “long march through the institutions” in the first place.

When the “Cry Wolf” project was pitched to me in May by an independent journalist, I matter of factly stated the propaganda project reminded me of the conflict of interest I experienced with Professors Peter Dreier and Christopher Martin months back. The journalist laughed out lout and said that Dreier was the co-chair, along with two others, on this project.
Which brings me back to the email Dreier sent me a few months back. Months had passed since Dreier had been exposed as an academic hack and things were moving away from all-ACORN all-the-time.
On April 27 I receive the following email:
Andrew,
I thought you might recognize yourself in this cartoon…
http://www.salon.com/entertainment/comics/this_modern_world/2010/04/26/this_modern_world
Have a nice day!
Peter Dreier
My immediate response to the professor went unanswered:
Professor,
The degree to which i will have a laugh at my expense (given I am a huge Tom Tomorrow fan; really, who isn’t?!) depends on your answer to the following question: Are you ribbing me in your official capacity on the ACORN Advisory Committee or as the co-author of an “independent” academic study defending ACORN? Get back to me.
Shalom aleichem!
Andrew Breitbart
I guess the moral of the hysterical Tom Tomorrow cartoon (old link has gone bad, but thanks, Peter for drawing it to my attention!) is that I am a conspiracy theorist — one who sees connections to an organized network of left-wing professors (artists, media types, et al) trying to manipulate academia to inculcate a generation of progressive agitators to shape media, artistic and cultural narratives.
Crazy me!
Call me a cartoon, professor. Call me an ideologue. But don’t claim I cry wolf. We’ve caught you red-handed twice.

Ha! Brilliant, as always. Let me preempt Boehlert's (and MMFA's) criticism, which will include such intelligent comments as "pathetic" and "sorry" by stating this is the latest in a very damning series of outright academic and journalistic fraud. Professor Dreier has a lot to answer for and it's excellent you are bringing his real agenda into the light.

Did they pull the cartoon already? No cartoons at that link.
I am never astounded at how shallow an intellectual pool the Academic elite swim in. Most of academia is populated by people who haven't had an independent thought in their adult life, and cave quickly when challenged.
Just remember to say something along this line, "If you believe that to be true then I doubt you are an expert on anything, except perhaps hiding your love for Marxism."

Way to go, again, Andrew. Keep up your good work. There are lots of us out here
rooting for you. How about a "Big Academia"?
Just remember Andrew, once the insults start, that means the left has already conceded the debate.
When they do it to me, what I hear is "Damn, that was a good point. Can't argue with that."
so your saying that left wing academics are NOT interested in intellectual honesty?…
That they are lockstep thinkers, and propagandists? Whatever would give you that idea? Can't you see it's all a coincidence? That they are just poor, misunderstood, wastrels trying to find their way through an intellectual fog?
Oh.
They are agent provocatuers. Fifth column types.
We get it…
Professors Peter Drier and Chris Martin sound like the same CYA wunderlich's that gave us the AGW "hockey stick" chart… spinning madly to keep the fraud alive and lavishly funded…
Parents can make the difference here, by avoiding, like the plague, these phony, opaque institutions and patronizing schools that are the polar opposite, like Hillsdale College.
I agree with RuralDelivery: a good piece of work, and even more with the comment regarding the need for a "Big Academia" site. As a conservative grad student at a major university, I see this sort of extreme liberal pseudo-intellectual chicanery at work almost every single day!
Or any debate for that matter, you get personal and start insulting your opponent the moderator should step in and declare the winner.
The lefties with their "truther" and "corporate-run government" conspiracies are pretty pathetic.
Bring on the Big Education site!
Thanks rightwinghegel–Comment #6 above. Imagine a "Big Academia" encouraging the "inner-journalist" of grad students like yourself, undergrads, conservative profs in US universities and colleges. I think it would open the "floodgates" of observation and opinion. Shine the light and watch 'em scurry. It needs to happen on our campuses. From the inside out. Take the fight into the belly of the Left.
If you click on the Tom Tomorrow link in the third to the last paragraph, it takes you to a really funny cartoon.
Excellent article, Andrew! Kolakavod!
Facts. Data. Laid out clearly, let the reader make up his own mind. Yes.
Breitbart's exposing of the hippie libs on the left always gives me a laugh.
I can't decide if the reaction from lefties after AB does what he does is akin to a 3 year old denying he/she ate cookies that were left out, while said 3 year old's face is covered in chocolate and chunks of cookie dough. Or if the reaction is more like Captain Renault being shocked that there is gambling going on in this establishment.
Thanks rightwinghegel. Take the fight into the belly of the Left.
i predict in the not too distant future, we'll reach a tipping point where people like this will no longer feel comfortably protected from backlash by a media full of fellow travelers and administrators & politicians willing and able to provide cover. so many so-called 'objective academics' are getting burned these days by the new media (hello? global warming?) and this will help fuel the fire for conservative change. perhaps some day such 'professors' will not dare pull this crap because A) they'll be exposed as frauds in a heartbeat; and B) they'll have no tenure to insulate them from the real world.
Keep up the great work AB. We appreciate all you do to bring us the facts so we can make our own decisions. It also keeps the progtards on their toes- if they have any.
I searched for reports about this "Cry Wolf" project on two websites which concentrate on higher education. They were Chronicle of Higher Education and Inside Higher Education. Neither referred to this project. On the other hand, you can find a report about it on Minding the Campus, a generally conservative website on academic matters and of course you're reading about it now on Big Journalism. Either the other academic websites don't see anything significant about political propaganda dressed up as objective scholarship or they're too embarrassed to talk about it.
Fantastic, and to complete my Holy Trinity of liberal truth I'll read Pravda, and check out Media Matters too!
Then I'll wake up from my acid trip.
Like really! They should!
Andrew, is this guy a new PhD? He certainly acts like a whiny little highschool nerd turned certified professional learner with a certificate.
I'll have to remember that name and warn others to avoid the organizations/schools he indoctrinates at.
Any names of co-idiots/losers who hang with him so we can watch out for them, as well?
BTW, we used to have a prof of the local liberal institution who would post his blatherings on one of the local events forums, wacky left winger, who taught juniors/seniors and who was devoted to all kinds of causes dem/progressive in our local area. One day one guy got so peeved at him that he pointed the wacko prof to the school website, to a pic of one of the school teams, and noted that he was THE biggest private supporter of that team, and that he was writing a letter to the school and withholding funding because of that idiot. The blathering immediately went silent and that prof no longer shared his views.
We need to expose these fools, find the donors of these schools and remind the donors of who they are supporting with their funds. That will change things.
Why we allow their ilk to influence/indoctrinate the next generation is beyond me. I really don't care the credentials of the individual, but the ideology and causes of that prof needs to be beneficial to the growth and betterment of society and the school/community, and honestly never a choice because of 'diversity.'
It's all about teaching the kids to believe the things, the way 'they' teach them, and to steer them, by poor grades, back to their path of beliefs.
If only life came with a moderator who could or would do that. Instead we have to do that our self.
Dreier is so happy because ignorance is bliss.
Thank you.
Peter Dreier = Pussified Professor Peddling Pathetic Political Propaganda and Puerile Progressive Pap
Is that award for the famous Clapp Trapp??
At what point will the lefties become the establishment and have to endure the rebellion of the young back to capitalism? I believe those who mature in mind and body must return to the idea of merit rather than existence. But, I admit, Obama and his groupies make me wonder. They have coasted to high places on Soros money and lunatic failed policies.
My computer must be broken because I didn't find it to be funny at all.
Perhaps the old way to kill a snake is still the best!
(cut into pieces and bury them in different places)
"We’ve caught you red-handed twice."
So, does Prof. Dreier have two red hands, or one hand dipped in blood twice?
Either one is preferable to double in flagrante delicto.
See the problem with articles like this is it has these little things called facts in it. It also uses the increddddddddddibly outdated philosophical tool some people like to call reason. Andrew, you're so unenlightened. You focus too much on material reality. Everything is so black and white with you. Don't you see that nothing is certain in this world and that reason is a silly, outdated superstition? And how can anybody know what's good for anything or anyone? How can you know what ought to be having only knowledge of what is? The human mind simply tricks you into thinking things have an actual reason, and that morality exists, That;s why you should leave it to us progressives. We know better than you. Geez, catch up with the times you wingnuts.
Did you lose yer sense of humor? I thought it was hilarious.
Keep pounding Andrew, exposing liberals and their fraud is like shooting fish in a barrel…what fun! I love it!
Go tie yourself back into a pretzel, and resume sucking your thumb.
Absolutely.
You would find most of the offensive celebrity opinion and philosophy, cultivated in academic soil. This soil is churned with all the blathering manure of Noam Chomsky, Eric Pianka, Ward Churchill etc. etc. etc.
BDS is just one of the results, of this insidious type of intellectual indoctrination; It is just one side effect of this ugly cesspool of groupthink.
Students attach their trust and their entire subsequent opinion reaction to an 'expert source' that has firmly established a position of intellectual authority, over hours and hours, in the classroom.
Once a student is a believer, with the grade to prove it, any challenge, to that thought process, is seen a a personal, not a intellectual rebuke. This invites violent emotional reaction, instead of classic Aristotelian debate. Its rather ugly and uncivilized.
Dontcha just love the smell of stupid coming from such smug self righteous pig face F&%$#@s as these guys?
Kinda like catching them with their pants down, but them saying that isn't what it is, and trying to obfuscate their way through everything whilst blasting idiotic nya-nyas at anyone who discredits them.
Great job again AB!
I think he was being sarcastic.
Out with the old in with the new. Out with the old in with the new. Out with the old in with the new. Well this 'ain't no' wolf crying.
Say goodbye to General Electric and say hello to General Breitbart.
We in the field, Sir, suspect that Professor E.P Clapp has become instantly a liability for the enemy. Therefore General Breitbart we suspect he may now be a Code Purple. We suspect a midnight relocation Friday night. Marin County sounds logical.
OUT.
This.
StanH, go read or download a book or audiobook of Atlas Shrugged and get back to me
I was very fortunate in my return to college days in the 1990's. I was at the University of Washington in the Comparative Religion dept of the Jackson School for International Studies. The professors I had in that department were just astoundingly dedicated to good scholarship and academic integrity. Unfortunately, the standards seem to have deteriorated generally in academia since then and we are stuck with far too many political shills parading as objective academic investigators. I never thought I would become so negative and pessimistic towards this country or the civilized world but when one wakes up and becomes a conservative, you can only be taken aback by the lack of integrity and honesty that overflows in the liberal intelligentsia. So sad.
Good lord, Breitbart, do you never take a rest from your bitching and moaning?
Very true and so very well stated, insolublog.
Excellent work, Andrew. It never ceases to amaze me the extent these pseudoscience academia types will go in order to manipulate fiction for fact and use their position as educators to extol the virtues of socialism, where no such moral excellence exists. At some point in time credibility must be called into question and the purveyors of disinformation are made to feel the wrath of indictment. I have often laughed at the weaklings, who think themselves good because they espouse a crippled ideology. But honestly, it is very frightening and they must be exposed. Thanks for holding their feet to the fire and know that your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Great article, Andrew! I have to laugh at this RFP, in particular the condition that a successful response must be scrupulously honest. This, from the left which has to act and dress up as a conservative to get elected. I wonder if I could make some quick change with these rubes by forwarding info from the Heritage Foundation?
It would be interesting to see how many conservatives have responded to this Request for Prevarication.
We can assume that you have no curiousity about connecting any dots, so HuffPo is recommended for those who accept anything at face value,
Well Done Andrew!!
And to think of the massive information technology available to 'real journalists' and yet they never seem to make the connections,,,,,even when they are shown!
FACTS, and the TRUTH have a funny way of embarrassing those who feel and act superior and morally beyond re-proach.
Our republic is dying a death of a million little cuts and this is just one more of those.
I used to think of progressives and libs as being simply dangerously naive,,,,but there are too many 'coincidences' to continue to give them the doubt and that they are truely EVIL
Twas pretty obvious. But maybe Stan was being, too.
They are now the establishment, in a way entirely unlike and more sinister than anything in the 60's. We are way overdue for some serious youthful rebellion.
He looks way to old to be newly minted. No, he looks like one of those who cut his long hair 30 years ago and went "mainstream", like Bill Ayers. As Andrew notes, Occidental College. A good reason to withhold funds from there.
61-page report, eh? If you can't win them with facts, dazzle 'em with tons of paper. Lefties love writing big papers, it makes them feel productive.

Wonderful!
These professors are weirdos. They are supposed to be teaching our college students job skills and professional ethics, yet they are liars themselves and promote destructive, disruptive organizations like ACORN to push the stealth socialist agenda. The scholarly audience for such creeps are fellow-travelers who have nothing better to do than to assist the government in putting the unwashed masses under its oppressive thumb, while reaping the rewards accrued from the capitalist system. They are ungrateful bastards devoid of historical or comparative political perspective and I refuse to acknowledge them as intellectual leaders. There is nothing noble or redeeming about their intentionally fracturing and spiteful attacks on the American middle class, which they are supposed to be serving. Today's leftists are not some harmless pacifists, they are malicious and spiteful elements with a codified philosophy to destroy the economy and the United States. That is why one should never trust a word the overwhelming majority of leftist academics say, not for reasons of paranoia, but of self-preservation. They are like the Muslim terrorists who are justified in their minds lying to unbelievers. We are the unenlightened drones of the capitalist superstructure and they are the vanguard of the burgeoning socialist cultural hegemony. Screw you leftists, we are on to you.
sarc on. . .
Andrew, you are obviously a racist and an obamao hater with ties to Dick Chenney (he caused the oil spill).
Your pathetic attempt to actually use facts in a debate has caused the spotlight of reason to shine on you and your work.
Shame!
sarc off. . .
Personally, you are showing what reasoned manner/intellect will do to progressives that try to obfuscate the truth with propoganda.
A humble salute, sir.
Tom Tomorrow is a tedious, tendentious, leftist lickspittle who has never drawn a fresh idea in his life.
Yep once the Ad hominem attacks start you have won.
I would love that! They would never run out of material!
I just don't get why Breitbart flames a guy for politely saying, "Hey, we'd rather not put up part of our study on your site. But we'd be happy to provide you a link to the whole shebang." That seems reasonable, and even if the guy has an agenda, he's at least civil about it. But then Breitbart just flames away. I guess I just don't see the need for the intemperateness.
Anybody with a title as long as Dreier (E.P Clapp Distinguished Professor of Politics and Urban & Environmental Policy Program director at Occidental College) exposes the bureaucratic mumbo jumbo that is the old academia.
Kind of reminds me of Boxer…Excuse me can you please refer to me as Senator…I mean I worked SO HARD to get that title.
The same thing that is happening to the MSM is also happening to the old academia.
Students with $100,000 loans wondering why that can't find work as a basket weever or they won't work because they just can't see themselves anywhere but at the top from day one.
Funny how narrow minded the supposed free-thinking academics are, isn't it? Way to go Andrew!
("and another one bites the dust!")
David Horowitz has been doing an outstanding job skewering the leftist thoughtpolice on American campuses, but he is like the lone voice crying out in the wilderness, he needs help! Bring on Bid Ed!
Lets be honest folks. Dreier and most progressives just can't make it in the real world of hard knocks. They're constant hand in the pockets of America shows them to be infintile in nature and pathological in spirit. Thats why they flock to Mommy (Government employment or the public school system).
Nothing is black and white to progressives. It's all gray. You know, that zone they live in between what is right and wrong where all deviant behavior is accepted. Progressives,do America a favor. Get a clue and fade into the ash heap of history where you belong.
Plug the damn hole Andrew. Plug the damn hole. Well done. You are a true Patriot.
Even in a more conservative state, as a college student I still often run into the liberal elite professors spewing their sophistry as fact. Drives me crazy.
I love this story. Back in 1969, in my Economics 101 class, my teacher dismissively nicknamed me Mr. Friedman, yes! THAT Mr. Friedman, the 1976 Nobel Prize winner in economics. The poetic justice still makes me laugh.
They are losing the war of ideas and their desperation is showing.
I teach at a university, and I have to say that I've been to countless departmental and college meetings and I've never heard a right/left political agenda advanced, EVER. Same goes for informal gatherings–lunches, parties, etc. Now, I don't doubt that some profs' politics do make it into the classroom, but I've seen no evidence of a *movement* to do this.
And frankly, I give my students enough credit to realize that just because a prof says something doesn't mean the students will buy it hook, line, and sinker. Certainly my students are free to roll their eyes at *anything* I say.
i think it was Oscar Wilde who observed that "Good sarcasm is wasted on children." I'd add virtually all liberals and, unfortunately, more than a few conservatives.
i'd say you're giving those guys a VERY charitable reading. not to mention that AB's main point is the utter lack of disclosure as to their connections, not their reluctance to appear on the Big sites.
I don't know that I'm being charitable . . . just trying to approach their reply in a balanced way. Sometimes AB is a bit too antagonistic for me. Not EVERYTHING is nefarious, you know?
We, the polite and civilized, have tip-toed around you MoonBat's delicate sensibilities for decades. Thanks to AB, the party's over. Tuff-up and get used to it. You will never again control the narrative with
your blubbering.
Mine just slammed into the back of my head.
Ummmm… I don't have delicate sensibilities, and since you don't know me I don't see how you can call me a MoonBat.
And just what is this "narrative" that's being controlled, anyway? Seems to me that the idea that there was a single narrative went out in the 60s at the very latest…
Why would I NOT read the article? If I want to learn things about my world, shouldn't I be reading as much as I can, from all sides? I'm an independent, and I read stuff from left, right, and center. Surely I'm allowed to disagree with something AB writes just as I might disagree with something Huffington writes, aren't I?
Sounds painful; you really should see a doctor about that.
Saying that Breitbart is "bitching and moaning" is name calling not disagreeing with the substance of his article. Lay out some facts why you disagree.
Indepnedent my ass. Take a stand girly man
Ah, ad hominem attacks . . . the last resort of the witless.
yea, maybe.
[...] rest is here. Thanks for the link to [...]
Still waiting for your reply on what exactly was Bretibart "bitching and moaning" about.
So its okay for you to resort to name calling but no one else? Typical of your type Kevy.
Saying someone is bitching and moaning is not name-calling. Calling him a bitch or a moaner would be (I wouldn't do either), but describing a person's actions generally is not. My point is simply that he could have communicated the information he did–which does look pretty darn suspicious–without the choleric tone. Remember William F. Buckley, Jr.? Now there was a guy who eviscerated the left with almost every word he spoke, but he always did so in a measured tone, and even his barbs and insults were elegant. I'm more apt to be persuaded by someone with Buckley's voice than someone with Breitbart's.
So you're right–I'm not complaining about substance. I'm objecting to style. What's wrong with that?
I'm glad that you respect your student's diversity of opinion- but such liberality is *not* universal, and if you are denying that many professors do grade based on ideology then you really, really need to wake up.
I take it, then, that you think offering cash for pre-determined 'research' is not a good thing?
Seems to me that you have a problem with Breitbart. You claim you want to hear opposing views. But with your preconceived notions about AB, you are not really looking for balance. Try reading with an open mind.
You mean like asking Bill Clinton if this is the first time he has cheated on his wife and feel like your in the middle of a tornado because of the spin?
Geesh, I criticized one column; how does that mean I have a problem with Breitbart? If I didn't want to hear opposing views, I clearly wouldn't be here. Seems to me that YOU are the one who doesn't like hearing any kind of dissent.

There's nothing wrong with offering cash to researchers or subjects of research (happens all the time), but this doesn't sound like research. Real research follows the data where it leads and then draws conclusions; from the little bit that I've read, this project isn't kosher on that front.
At my university, a study like this would have to pass muster with the research ethics office. It'd be interesting to know what institutional flags were raised, and how those discussions went.
Nope.
