NBC White House correspondent Chuck Todd is a neo-Luddite and he doesn’t even know it. In a brief impromptu video clip, Todd said that, “there is no worse crime in journalism these days than simply deciding something’s a story because Drudge links to it.”
So forget plagiarism, intentional misinformation, news fabrication -– remember the New York Times’s Jayson Blair? –- intentional shilling for a political philosophy or politician, and just plain incompetence. None, according to Todd, are as journalistically “criminal,” in the non-judicial sense, as taking a story cue from Matt Drudge.

Todd is replicating the two-hundred years old whine of the early 19th-century Luddites. Here’s a brief reminder of the movement of British textile workers led by General Ned Ludd between 1811-1816:
In the early months of 1811 the first threatening letters from General Ned Ludd and the Army of Redressers, were sent to employers in Nottingham Workers, upset by wage reductions and the use of unapprenticed workmen, began to break into factories at night to destroy the new machines that the employers were using. In a three-week period over two hundred stocking frames were destroyed. In March, 1811, several attacks were taking place every night and the Nottingham authorities had to enroll four hundred special constables to protect the factories.
New mass production textile technology threatened the jobs of textile artisans, so they went on a destructive rampage. Here’s an account of how it began:
…Luddism began on the night of 4th November 1811, in the little village of Bulwell, some four miles north of Nottingham, when a small band of men gathered in the darkness, counted off in military style, hoisted their hammers and axes and pistols, and marched to the home of a `master weaver’ named Hollingsworth. They posted a guard, suddenly forced their way inside through shutters and doors, and proceeded to destroy a half-dozen weaving machines of a kind they found threatening to their trade. They scattered into the night, later reassembled at a designated spot, and at the sound of a pistol disbanded into the night, heading for home.
Todd’s can’t bust up the Drudge Report with a mallet, so he uses his trade tools – words. And his tool use is not all that artful in the video clip linked above.
Put yourself in Chuck’s shoes. Soon to be 38-years old, he attended but didn’t graduate from George Washington University, yet he’s an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, no doubt because of his job as Political Director for NBC News. By his lights, he’s at the top of his field.

Along comes Matt Drudge, who graduated 341st out of his high school class of 355. He worked odd jobs while he slowly, using his small apartment as his base of operations, built up a news distribution dynasty from an email mailing list of 1,000 in 1995.
Drudge is something that Chuck Todd has never been and will likely never become – an entrepreneur. Drudge’s website took nearly 8 billion hits in the last 12 months. And that’s why Chuck decided to take a hit on Matt.
Todd’s a jealous Neo-Luddite.
A Neo-Luddite is someone who believes that the use of technology has serious ethical, moral, and social ramifications. Operating under this belief, Neo-Luddites are cautious to promote early adoption of technology, and while they are not necessarily opposed to technology, they would prefer to see a more serious discussion of the role of technology in society. Some Neo-Luddites actually dislike technology, opting for a life of “voluntary simplicity,” but this is not always the case.
“Voluntary simplicity” is just what Chuck would like to see maintained, and what Matt and other are methodically deconstructing. Far better, by their lights, to simply let Chuck and his MSM colleagues, the “genuine journalists,” feed us the stories they want us to eat.
Sorry, Chuck. You’re out of luck.

I am sure however, that in true neo-luddite form, as someone perched high atop Mt. Academia, that Chuck Todd would be right quick to advocate a double standard when it comes to technology. The Illuminati's would have carte blanche when it comes to technology, in every form, fashion, and medium; while the great unwashed would be relegated to #2 Lead Pencils, Big Chief tablets, and the US Postal Service as the preferred medium of instantaneous mass communications.
Who?
Sorry, I should have written,"If Chuck came up with a scoop on the Prez, maybe he'd be linked by Drudge."
The sycophantic Marx Stream Media is starting to whine about their dwindling numbers but they can't seem to understand that their product sucks!
They have tried to subsidize their sucky product with equally sucky oline rags that act as nothing more than official White House mouth pieces yet they wonder why nobody buys there BS anymore?
Two words Chuck Todd to sum up your emotional and financial woes as a member of the nanny state media…
YOU SUCK!
Proverbs 14:30 (New International Version)
A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.
The only thing Chuck Todd is linked to these days seems to be the buffet table.
Say, how far down on the Bad List would be the long running masking of both murder & torture done by a mad dictator just to keep an edge on the your competition?
The university mentioned in the article is Johns Hopkins, not John Hopkins. Attention to such detail is another mark of high quality professional journalism
Are you suggesting the typo is more significant than the moral of the story? Because you seem to be.
Marxism is inherently anti-technological. He said outright that if industrialization cost jobs then get rid of the machines and over-specialize the workers so there was full employment.
Why would a propaganda hack believe any different, particularly if the technology in question was making his job obsolete?
Chuck Todd is merely voicing the sentiments of the vast majority of his peers in the MSM, Drudge is a big problem in their efforts to totally control the narrative in the news.
Phase one; The MSM reports the news.
Phase two: The MSM decides what is and what is not the news. People stop trusting the MSM.
Phase three: The MSM tries to control what people think by what the MSM reports as news. People stop listening to the MSM.
Phase four: The MSM tried to silence anyone who reports anything but the MSM side. People start actively working against the interests of the MSM.
Phase Five: I guess we will see.
I notice he demurs at the beginning, suggesting that he doesn't want to pinpoint another journalist, because he wouldn't want someone else to do that to him. Then he immediately and enthusiastically targets Drudge. His motives are so transparent it is comical.
His condescension near the end of the piece is very interesting. He has an air of almost granting the unwashed public a snippet of insight into the complex and confusing workings of his lofty profession. Very "Wizard of Oz." You mean that sometimes you ask questions based on what your colleagues are working on??? Oh my, I had no idea!!
[...] Journalism picked up on an item I reported at NewsBusters (also blockquoted by Ed Driscoll), headlined “Chuck [...]
Oh, Chuckie, Chuckie, Chuckie….
Unlike you, I actually have a college degree (a B.S. in Chemical Engineering), so let me 'splain this to you in real simple language so your uneducated mind can grasp it:
We do not trust you. You read on-air what Democrat party gives you to read. You cannot think. You are a small-minded, jealous person. To call you a man would be stretching the meaning of the word "man". You work for people with little minds and smaller brains.
Most of us here in America do not like you, or your company, GE/NBC Universal. We want you to go away and leave us alone. You make us feel sorry for you when you say anything. Please go away, Chuckie. Maybe that nice man in North Korea, Kim Jong Il, will give you a nice job counting rocks for him.
Mr. Drudge is a nice man, Chuckie. He doesn't try to tell us what he thinks we should hear. He tells us everything and lets us decide if we like it. You should like Mr. Drudge, Chuckie. Unlike your bosses, he won't lie to you, or make you lie for them.
Todd and the rest of the MSM yearn for the old Command-Control (Soviet Style) system whereby editors decide what the people need to know. Those days are far gone and Chuckie sounds like a fool. Drudge is nothing more than a portal that puts choices in one place. Sure he decides what stories to headline and yes they do get publicity- but is a newswire or home page of a newspaper any different ? Todd is nothing more than a small minded liberal who fears the marketplace.
Please Chuck, move to China or Venezuela where the government approved media can decide for you- no drudge to worry about.
Sorrie.
As a student this is an interesting tidbit of info: "he attended but didn’t graduate from George Washington University, yet he’s an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University"
He's the political director for NBC News? If he walked into a classroom I was sitting in I'd get up and walk out.
Not particulaly because he didn't bother to graduate from G.W., but because he practices his "craft" in such a sloppy, liberally partisan way.
Based on his inability to make it through George Washington, I'm forced to assume he takes reporting the facts as lazily and half heartedly as he took his "education".
Yo "Chucky" take a few months off and finish up, or get hooked up with an internet college. Bonehead.
I can't even stand to look at that mug when it's on tv. Laura Ingraham has Chuck on her radio show from time to time and I switch stations when that happens.
There is a disease named after Chuck…chuckatosis. Symptoms include: asinine comments; a frequent bewildered look; goatee; always wrong about everything.
NBC should ban that horrible goatee…it says to me "sceanster" – who isn't.
Nice article Mr. Cary, don't mind he school marms and pseudo intellectuals…
The main stream media is a liberal stalking horse that thinks its a sacred cow.
(stalking horse- acts as a proxy to protect an undisclosed third party from blame)
Aw,he's just tryin' to hide that double chin…
He is giving neo-luddites a bad name. There's nothing wrong with being a neo-luddite – in some cases it can save your life.
editing error, since corrected.
I have to say I have no idea who Chuck Todd is. I know who Drudge is Breitbart is Malkin is, Kind of shows how little the self important weasels in the MSM matter to news now. They can whine like a 1 year old baby though Wahhhhhhhh….
I remember when Allen Luddite was host of "Password"…
Ha! As if the protestations of some unknown-to-me-or-anybody-else-who-matters journotard is going to ruffle Drudge's feathers.
My AM goes like this:
1] Start coffee maker
2] Hit Drudge
3] Get coffee
4] Hit NRO, Instapundit, and then the Bigs.
5] Begin work day.
That ain't a changin' pard.
NBC(Nothing But Crap)
I guess I should be hypercritical and skeptical of Mr. Chuck Todd…
If I had heard of him prior to this article…
As it is, I suppose I'll just chuckle and walk away, shaking my head…
There is nothing worse than someone who is famous in their own mind…
Aristophanes
We know this is said in the kindest way. Wink, wink.
National Brack Channel
That routine sounds terribly familiar……………oh ya, it's missing "let dogs out" somewhere near the top there.
batcat, hey I like that!
Unfortunately for NBC News, it is because of folks like Chuck Todd, having been awarded a position for which he is not qualified or seasoned enough to bring any hint of objective integrity, that the network news outlets are the least trusted of the many other news sources. IMHO, the last journalist at NBC who commanded any respect was Tim Russert.
If Chuck came up with a scoop on the Prez, maybe he'd be linked to Drudge.
Basically, you're saying F. Chuck Todd is jealous of Matt Drudge? Well, of course he is. BUT, why doesn't he display such jealousy toward any of the many MSM journalists who have have flown higher than he has, or will?
Answer: He's a Liberal. Members of the Progressive/Liberal movement HATE conservatives, and despise the self-made man. He loathes Matt Drudge as being both. FC Todd is no doubt jealous of many others, but Liberals generally only stroke each other in public. They feel perfectly at ease, however, in verbally attacking conservatives.
I don't think the moniker neo-Luddite is appropriate under these circumstances. Mr. Todd is not criticizing the use of the technology of the internet because it has serious consequences. Rather, he is criticizing the ideas contained in the Drudge Report. There is a big difference there. One can be of a neo-Luddite strain and be conservative or liberal in one's political views. We ought to be more critical (as in thinking critically) of our use of technology. See Neil Postman's excellent little book "Technopoly" for a well laid out argument.
LOL, way to completely fail to grasp the point. Drudge reports news. Period. The changing links on his site are INVARIABLY NEWS. He doesn't have a list of his beliefs nor can ANYONE accurately portray his political ideology, 'cause we don't know what it is. Seriously, nobody knows. Todd could not possibly be objecting to "Drudge's ideas" because Drudge doesn't promote any. Drudge simply picks what he thinks are significant stories and links them up. And, once in a while, breaks a story on his own. Drudge's static links are to a HUGE array of editorial or opinion writers, which range from the far left to far right. He has the largest single one-page archive of news source links of any site I know.
Drudge is news, and pretty much nothing else. The only thing that Todd could possibly be complaining about is either Drudge's success, or his technological means of delivery. Since your argument is false, and Todd complaining about Drudge's success would be laughably assinine, then the ONLY logical alternative is to say… "It's the technology, stupid."

I expect you to call out NBC on matters of fact greater than typos. Show me that you have.
I'm kinda stuck on that word "whinging". What does that mean again?
so news from Drudge = bad; news from Daily Kos site = good?
I am favorableto find so many usefulinformation here in the post, we need advancemore strategies in this regard, thanks for sharing.
