In his March 12, 2010, interview with FOX News’ Greta van Susteren, former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich described a conversation he said he had with Rahm Emanuel concerning a replacement for Obama’s Senate seat. His comments on that subject are within 1:09-3.29 of this video.
Blago’s words came in the context of discussing former Congressman Eric Massa’s allegation that Emanuel lobbied him in a shower while both men were naked. Suggesting this episode displayed Emanuel’s tactics, Blagojevich said,
I chose Rahm Emanuel. He was my first choice to help us pick a United States Senator. I wanted him to make a deal with the Democratic House Speaker here in Illinois. In exchange for me appointing his daughter he would stop blocking a public works bill that would create jobs. He would stop blocking healthcare expansion for fifty to three-hundred thousand people. And a written promise not to raise taxes on people. Rahm was the guy I chose to make that deal happen. And was about to do it and then everything changed when they came and arrested me.

The Illinois House Speaker in Illinois is Michael J. Madigan. He’s been Speaker since 1982, and chair of the Illinois Democratic Party since 1998. Here’s some of what the Chicago Tribune knows about him:
Madigan & Getzendanner has become a go-to firm in Chicago’s lucrative field of commercial property tax appeals. In 2008 it represented 45 of the 150 most valuable downtown buildings, based on values set by the last complete city reassessment in 2006, according to public records. That’s more than twice what the closest rival represented…
The client list for Madigan & Getzendanner includes some of the most prestigious skyscrapers in Chicago’s famous skyline — from the John Hancock Center on Michigan Avenue to the Prudential Plaza towers across from Millennium Park.
In 2006, the last reassessment year in which full statistics are available, Madigan’s firm won enough appeals to cut more than $183 million from the taxable value of the top high-rises it represented, the Tribune examination shows. Most of that success was at the Board of Review, where Madigan ally Berrios is one of three elected members.
So Madigan has major-league clout in Illinois. Mayor Daley owns City Hall in Chicago. The Speaker owns the Capital in Springfield, but his influence covers the entire state. It’s a simpatico arrangement between His Honor and Mister Speaker.
The current Attorney General (AG) of Illinois is Lisa Madigan, the Speaker’s 43-years old daughter. She was first elected AG in 2002, after serving in the Illinois Senate with Obama.

After Blago was arrested on December 9, 2008, Ms. Madigan unsuccessfully filed a motion with the SCOTUS on December 12 asking the Court to temporarily remove Blago from office. Then, on December 30, Blago stuck his thumb in the Machine’s collective eye and appointed a former Illinois AG, Roland Burris, to Obama’s Senate seat.

Ms. Madigan’s up for re-election in 2010. Widely speculated to have been the most favored Democrat candidate for Obama’s old Senate seat, she chose not to run in the recent Democrat primary race. Why?
Last January, Big Journalism posted a review of the three leading Democrat candidates for Obama’s former U.S. Senate seat. It was a weak field; it didn’t take a crystal ball to identify Alexi Giannoulias as the favored Machine candidate and likely winner.

Unfortunately for Alexi, a week before the early February primary election, the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Division of Banking in Springfield, in conjunction with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in Washington, D.C., issued a 28-pages Consent Order directing the Giannoulias family bank, Broadway Bank, to put its business in order.
It doesn’t look good for a Senatorial candidate, particularly one who is the Treasurer of a state facing financial difficulties, to have his family bank charged with…
- …unsafe or unsound banking practices and violations of law, rule, or regulation alleged to have been committed by the Bank.
The Tribune editorial board sat down with Giannoulias on March 3 to discuss his business dealings:
• What about loans to allegedly unsavory characters?
The candidate became intense when questioned about Broadway’s loans to organized crime figures such as Michael “Jaws” Giorango and to convicted influence peddler Antoin “Tony” Rezko, connections he clearly regards as politically poisonous. He insisted the bank did due diligence on their applications and deemed the loans credit-worthy, but said banks generally don’t perform criminal background checks on potential borrowers.
He also said he doesn’t know how Giorango or Rezko came to be customers. “It’s tough to ask my father questions,” he said, underscoring the most unsatisfying theme of both the interview and his campaign: When the family bank was flying high and Giannoulias had his eye on the treasurer’s office, he was the senior loan officer, but when the tough decisions were made or the questionable characters came to call, it was almost always Alexi’s day to empty the wastebaskets.
So, how long will it be before Alexi Giannoulias gets a call, if he hasn’t already, from his basketball friend the President and is told to remove himself from the race?
And how long after that will it be before Ms. Madigan is selected by the Illinois Democratic Party, chaired by her father, to be the replacement candidate – after not having faced opposition in a contentious primary race and with plenty of campaign money still available?
And then, how long will it take after Ms. Madigan announces her senatorial candidacy for the Machine tabs David Hoffman, former Inspector General of the City of Chicago (2005-2009) who lost to Alexi, to replace Ms. Madigan as the Democratic candidate for AG?
All as Alexi gets thrown under the bus.
If all that happens, the question that the MSM won’t think to ask is this: Was this bait-n-switch in the works from the get-go?

There is no end of the depth and extent of the tentacles and how deep they run in Chicago politics and now they are in D.C. The MSM is just an enabler in all this for the favors granted to the elite executives. The country is doomed if we cannot stop it or at least slow it down.
Do you believe us when we say this kind of crap has been going on in Chicago since Capone now?
Chicago politicians….OBLABLA and his henchmen prove us everyday that they are ALL slime….
Will someone please tell me the difference between Blago offering a Senate seat for a political favor and Pelosi offering water to California Reps for their vote on the Health Bill?
and a third possibility we had not counted upon- we were arrested!
Well stated, this should be counted as unethical as well as the "Louisiana Purchase" and any of the other back room deals. When I say unethical, I mean criminally unethical. It's called bribing a public official and every American should file lawsuits that keep them so busy they won't be able to even think about another bill until Obama is either impeached or out of office!
Aahhh, Washington, DC … AKA Chicago on the Potomac.
hey when it is only taxpayer money, money is not a object. just keep sending out the requests, and keep offering the earmarks for votes. blago wasn't just impeached for selling this seat, he also was going around his legislature. they would not pass a bill, and he would sign executive orders doing what they said no to. i wonder if rahm was either naked in a shower, or wearing his ballerina outfit when talking to blago. on a side note i liked seeing blago as a waiter on the apprentice, he even managed to screw that up too.
The Chicago/New Jersey dirty politics Nexus marches on.
Dems in NJ pulled this same EXACT crap in '02.
Robert Torricelli, the Dem incumbent, became tainted late in the race due to some payback scandal, and was censured by the Senate, if I recall correctly. He had been leading his Repub rival comfortably until then.
When it became obvious he was going to lose, the NJ mob – uh…I mean Democrat machine – pulled him out of the race, replacing him with Frank Lautenberg, a favorite son who had previously served 3 terms as Senator. They did this in clear violation of state election law, missing the established deadline by WEEKS – in fact, I believe absentee ballots had already been cast!
Curiously, Lautenberg (a very rich man) had given up his Senate seat willingly. He was very old, loved the power – he was on several important Senate committees – but hated campaigning. (Of course, it helped his decision that the Repubs had gained the majority in the Senate in his last term. Lautenberg loves power, and hates being in the minority).
So here was a perfect opportunity – the Dems had already spent months beating up on the Repub challenger, Doug Forrester, and the election was only a month away. And as an extra added bonus, the Dems were now in the majority!
Anyway, of course, no legal obstacle is insurmountable for Dems, for whom laws are mere bumps in the road. They rolled right over the one regarding timely replacement of candidates – Gov. McGreevey (yes, THAT McGreevey) – said that to NOT replace Torricelli was to deny the people of NJ a choice. What? There was no law saying Torricelli couldn't run – they had a clear choice; the criminal or the Republican.
But this was New Jersey.
Anyway, Lautenberg kicked Forrester's ass in the election.
The only consolation was that Lautenberg was one of only a few Dems to win. It was the year of Bush's mid-term slaughter, and Lautenberg languished.
Of course, now the Dems are back in the majority. But Lautenberg is, like 90 years old. So he's just phoning it in at this point.
I don't think even Madigan can win in Illinois, though. People are not only on to the Dems' bullshit – they are FINALLY sick of it.

The issue is endemic in politics everywhere, but perhaps most rampant and visible in IL. I cannot confirm the statistic, but I've read that attorneys, or rather those in the legal profession, represent the largest single group of state and federal elected officials. Down at the local level, town and community, so the story goes, they are the least representative. So, attorneys gravitate to the most powerful positions, so the theory goes. Any wonder that they are able to so closely walk the line, or cross the line and not get caught?

The Dems are counting on placating enough people by giving them free sh*t. Some honestly believe entitlements are narcotics, and as long as they can argue that some, especially gullible independents, are getting benefits that the GOP would deny them, they think they can win.
Deadfish ought not be naked, for his thingy is stringy and unsightly at that. But, Blago did have to bring this up after the Massa encounter.
JoeInMichigan, today I'd bet on Matigan beating Kirk. He's widely perceived among conservative Republicans as a RINO. She, on the other hand, has the full-throated support of the Machine and probably, behind the scenes, the Combine Republicans like Ray LaHood. Plus, the Matigans control a significant political war chest. She is the strongest candidate the Dems could put up against Kirk. Alexi, on the other hand, will not do so well. Uninspiring rookie.
ben, Blago never says a thing publically without a self-serving motive. Always ask yourself – "Now just why is he saying that, and to whom?"
johno_in_MA, down the road we hope to post a piece on the Machine-Combine law firms in IL and not how former State and US Attorney's rotate among them after they work for the gov't. It'll make you vomit..
I realize that. But just look at what's happening in CA, for instance. Boxer was more of a safe bet than just about anyone. Not anymore, though. She's sinking fast and, although it's way early, the anti-dem sentiment is only gaining momentum at this point, and will likely roll right over her come November.
The Dems (and the MSM, but I repeat myself), would have you believe that this is more of an anti-incumbent movement (which, if true, is at least *better* for Madigan).
I don't buy that for a second.
They're whistling past the graveyard, and, barring some miracle where unemployment drops to below 8% or something, November may be the largest loss the Dems have ever suffered – much worse than '94, even.
I live in southern Illinois. It really sucks living in a state that refuses to acknowledge that you exist – except during property tax time. I wish Illinois could become two states, or make us part of Kentucky.
Alexi is dead meat soon, but don't discount the possibility of Rahm taking his spot.
This sounds like an ugly political game of musical chairs. What a bunch of criminals.
Like the eventual downfall of "Scarface" Al Capone, the IRS should find a few "Untouchables" and sweep into town and seize the lap tops, PC's, finacials and bank records of all these dirty pols and conduct a IRS style "colonoscopy" – you know there's dirt galore.
It's obvious.
I live in West Texas – same crap.
I read it all Joe. You make crystal clear sense. You have good political insticts, I can tell. Keep it up.
Try being a conservative in California! I wish I could move…
You hang in there and let reality and common sense cause the crazy liberals who are killing that beautiful state leave. It's coming, the backlash against Obamanistas and liberalism will be fierce.

The general public is so f@#^*n' stupid. This stuff was all there in plain sight for everyone to see before we put the slimeball Obama in office. But instead the masses believed in the "Messiah" (or anti-christ), he wasn't listening to Reverand Wright damn the United States of America.
You stupid bastards (literally) that voted for him.
Chicago Politics is just as bad a Chicago Business. You have your unsavory people taking bribes, pressuring others, and doing anything they can to destroy the opposition and win the game. Anything you can. Much like they are doing in Washington DC right now. You have bribes, arm twisting, and other shady dealings to get anyone they can get to change the rules.
According to http://www.americanparchment.com, there are two interesting facts that no one is reporting 1) There are Democrats that won't answer a phone call from the President because they don't want their arms twisted. If a Dem is saying this then you know there is overwhelming pressure to conform, not just change their minds. 2) There are lists of shady deals that have leaked out that would make these politicians mothers turn over in their graves, it is that bad.
Jamesb, US Arrorney Pactrik Fitzgerald is, in the eyes of the corrupt Machine, a dark force gathering evidence against them. Sooner or later, Obama will need to replace him with a lacky. If left alone, Fitzgerald could take a major bite out of the Machine. Watch the news from Chicago this summer. Or, if Blago gets his request for a trial delayed to Nov., then. Storm clouds are building.
Yes, it "was there in plain sight for everyone to see," except the MSM decided to avoid it altogether. People in, say New Mexico (where Gov Richardson runs his own smaller Machine) know it's corrupt in Chicago & IL, but the MSM didn't mention it during the campaign. Plus, so far, with the exception of the Rezko land deal involving Barry's house, none has spashed up on him. Yet.
Certainly. The charges against Blago involve personal gain to him in the form of campaign contributions that he's free to use to enhance his own welfare, and that of his friends and political allies. Pelosi is buying votes for an ideology – socialism – in which she believes. She and her husband are worth millions – money tranfers aren't the issue with her.
The scope and complexity of the corruption today far exceeds anything Big Al could have imagined.
Perfect post!
On the Money Joe!
Actually, I think there's another explanation as to why Lisa Madigan did not run for the senate: the atmosphere in Illinois is starting to turn poisonous for Democrats. Voters are sick of the crap the Democratic machine has been pulling for years, and large portions are ready to vote them out. It could very well be that Blago (and Stroger and Daley and Quinn) have done to the Democrats what President Bush did to the Republicans in 2008: made them so distrusted in this state that nothing can save them this fall. Thus, I think the Madigans have made the political calculation that it would be better for them to hang tight and sit this cycle out–because if Lisa ran for either of those seats this year and lost, then chances are very unlikely she'd be able to run for them again. The calculation they are making, I think, is to let Gov. Quinn and Alexi Gianoullias lose in November, and then wait until either of those seats come up for re-election (The Governor's seat most likely, since I think in their heart of hearts Mike Madigan and his daughter feel that is the bigger prize), when they feel they will have better chances than this year.
I'll keep an eye on Illinois and this mess. I love to see Obama go under oath to determine "what he knew and when he knew it". Same for Rahm.
My Dad is from Kankakee and I'll be up there in June for awhile. I love Chicago and look forward to swinging by Buddy Guy's and going to the Sheed and Field Museums.
Soon he'll be hearing "You fired!"
Yeh, Joe

Thanks for the great post! You have a new fan.
Ya, there are many deals that have leaked out but personally, I think that online banking is overrated and I am a little bit suspicious of online banks in general. I come from a generation that used to go to the high street bank branch and do all my transactions face to face with a human being. But today, this is becoming rare and so banks are becoming faceless internet empires, using our money to gain capital growth. I think most of the online banks listed on the bank index at sites likehttp://www.dozenbanks.com are safe but some of the smaller, international e-banks are more open to identity fraud and security issues.
