On Sunday I was honored to be a speaker at the rally against building the mosque at ground zero put on by the Coalition to Honor Ground Zero. As the rally concluded, thousands of the participants marched the one block from the rally site to the actual site of Ground Zero.
I noticed a man in black shirt with a phone camera aggressively questioning and haranguing a gentleman with the sign, “No Sharia Here.” He was very aggressive, disrespectful and condescending; apparently, he did not like the man’s answers about Shariah and pushed the point: “Why do you feel threatened? What are you afraid of? Why can’t you answer my questions?”
My instincts told me to document the scene, and I took out my camera. I originally thought he was a supporter of the mosque (they’d gathered in much smaller numbers a few blocks away), or some kind of fringe reporter for a small, even fringier leftist paper. When I challenged the man in the black shirt, asking him to tell me what media outlet he worked for, he refused to answer. He walked away.
But there was cameraman was standing nearby, watching the scene play out. When I asked, he said he worked for ABC News. I then asked if the man in the black shirt was with him. The ABC cameraman said, “yes.”
Sure enough, a few blocks away, I observed the man in the black shirt getting into an ABC News truck and putting on the sound equipment. When he saw me with my camera, he attempted to hide. At that time it became clear the man in the black shirt was an employee of ABC News. The ABC cameraman also witnessed his colleague’s aggressive behavior–and did nothing to stop him.
In my opinion, the ABC employee’s role at the rally was to provoke a confrontation with participants so ABC News cameras could record it and then use the footage; literally, making news.

Dear President Obama:
It seems like a lifetime ago, considering the economy is being shoved off a cliff by your backward, not a snowballs-chance-in-hell-of-working economic policy; while you simultaneously grab the parachutes off of Americas collective back. The grinding free-fall is becoming a reality for most in a world of depleted savings, and little reward for work other then survival. Soon after your assuming the throne you called on the Queen of England, then you presented her majesty with an ipod full of your speeches. Being a little bit of an audiophile, I’ve still got a reel to reel player and a record player, in my vast collection I have speeches from the most pivotal moments in recorded history, Churchill, FDR, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and much more. Of course I have an ipod too, and on it I have a bunch of speeches on that like the ones that Reagan delivered after his 49 state landslide, and the one he gave so presciently, and with great vigor in 1964. There is a vast chasm between you, and President Reagan. To understand this all one needs to hear is the response of the crowd to his nomination acceptance speech in Detroit, Michigan, to absorb the wisdom, humility, and love of country that Mr. Reagan held.
You see, Mr. Obama, men like President Reagan believed in what they were saying with their heart, soul, and mind. Men like Mr. Reagan understood that the American people had been suckered in the past, and they deserved the service of an American that would serve genuinely without pretense, or false witness. Mr. Obama, do you know what it means when a person has to speak in low tones, or can’t say one speech to every audience whether it is New York City, or Houston, Texas or, Minot Air force Base. It means they are practicing the art of obfuscation, because in their heart, in your heart Mr. Obama, you know that if you told the whole truth, and nothing but the truth your entire world would come crashing down. President Reagan earned the respect of the American people by holding himself, and frankly us, to a standard, and a hope, that we would once again see America as a shining beacon of liberty to all who seek her shores.
Mr. Obama I hope that one day you grow enough to earn our respect. I do not believe that there is a soul on this Earth who can’t decide that tomorrow is the day they do the right thing, including you. Yet, the evidence for this opportunity is diminishing by the week with every opportunity you have had to promote, and celebrate what makes America so special you blew, and as I think, Sinatra once said, not in a small way. If President Reagan were alive today he would be ashamed of what you have done thus far, he would be doing everything in his power to rally Americans to defeat you, and your ilk at the ballot box.
Since he is not here, it will be my honor, our honor, to try to do it for him.

I couldn't believe it when I saw his photo – this is the guy who approached me and took issue with my sign, which said "NO MOSQUE AT GROUND ZERO – IT'S NOT ABOUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM – IT'S ABOUT RESPECT FOR THE (3,000) DEAD". He was very sarcastic and contemptuous and said, "Do you know that it was 3,000? Wasn't it 2,997? Isn't it disrespectul not to know exactly?" After a previous encounter with a moronic woman on the subway who gave me her unsolicited opinion that she thought my viewpoint was ignorant, I had learned my lesson about what I should have said to her – so I told this guy, "Who the hell cares what you think?" Like Andrea, I assumed he was from some fringe leftist news outfit — unbelievable!!!
Don't boycott the news station. Boycott the advertizers of the news hour and those that advertise on all of ABCs programming. Let them know that we will take it to the streets in front of their corporate HQs that they support dishonest and false reporting. But alas, you MUST FOLLOW THROUGH. The conference room discussion would then lead into the necessities of removing all indications of network affiliation from the equipment, parking the company van and using a personal car instead, keeping the cameraman further away from the reporter and last but not least, making sure to go several days without shaving or bathing.
It would be interesting to see the reaction of ABC should Ms. Lafferty approach them with a story that is worthy of consideration, then whip this one out on them, while secretly taping their reactions to the exposure of their very own staff. Now that would be good stuff!!!

He has said that they have every right to build the mosque, so ABC will try to marginalize anyone with an opposing viewpoint, even if they have to create an incident to make up a story. I can see the headline they wanted: "Mosque supporters angry and violent bigots!". Glad they were busted in their attempt.

They are just taking a play from NBC's Dateline playbook. Four years ago, Dateline sent some stereotypically Muslim looking folks to some NASCAR races trying to show how bigoted NASCAR fans are. They failed because NASCAR folks just care if you're a Jeff Gordon fan or Dale Earnhardt Jr. fan. The truth is the MSM has been trying to make and shape the news for years now but they're getting caught repeatedly and can't keep it a secret, thanks to the internet.
Let me preface this by saying I'm conservative and no fan of the LSM. I am not defending ABC or aruging that what they do can hardly be called journalism. But I feel compelled to point out that it would have been much better had Ms. Lafferty documented this incident with cell phone *video*. She claims the ABC reporter was aggressive, disrespectful and condescending. Maybe he was… but I see no proof of it in this article… and you can bet he will say he wasn't. I see a picture of a guy with a cell phone and picture of a guy by a van. The rest is Ms. Lafferty's account. I'm not questioning her truthfullness. But if she's going to call ABC to task for the quality of their journalism, it seems rather hypocritical to do so based on equally questionable journalism.

I suppose it depends on the demeanor of the reporter. The way he phrases the questions alone shows bias. But it's no secrete ABC is bias. The real question is what does the author consider "aggressive, disrespectful and condescending". It's to bad she didn't have a video camera instead of just a regular camera. Without footage it's hard to say.
I did feel the same way with the Etheridge incident. These BIG sites are very big at stating what they think liberals believe and then tearing that down.
This is known as the straw man logical fallacy. On the BIG sites it is only surpassed by the ad hominem logical fallacy.

Okay, after reading the story and looking at the pictures, I don't see the ABC sound guy hassling anyone with his camera. I see him taking a picture with his camera. Nowhere do I see him causing news or trouble.
However, how do I know this person is telling the truth? The photos certainly don't show that. They're rather pedestrian images of the guy taking a picture, winding some cable, and a shot of a news media placard.
There's NOTHING in the images or the story to verify this "journalists" claims.
This is why we must be so careful with what we accept as fact or truth from ANY "media" source or person.
There are a lot of comments on the story crowing "You Go!" and praising her for her "journalism" but as an old newspaper writer myself, I just don't see the proof.
It is almost amusing that the MSM is so blind to what is going on. Why are their ratings in the toilet? They think it's because the internet is giving people so many choices when it comes to news and information sources. They as usual, they miss the point. It is the internet, and sites like this one, that has informed the public that they have been making the wrong choices!
I am simply expressing what I was taught as a journalist at one of the most conservative mid-sized newspapers in the D.C. area when I worked there as a writer/photojournalist.
As a reporter/shooter, you do not editorialize, and as an editor, you don't print such editorializing as hard news.
If I had submitted this at my newspaper (The Times Community Newspapers of Northern Virginia) both my photo editor and the managing editor would have rejected it. The story attempts to connect this guy with ABC News, by showing the photos they showed. AT NO POINT do the photos show an actual image of him with ABC News ID, or at an ABC News vehicle. It shows him winding cable at a dark-colored SUV, and then it shows a separate image of a dashboard placard in a presumably dark-colored vehicle OF SOME KIND that may OR MAY NOT be the vehicle this guy is in or near.
Anybody can get a press credential, or fake one, same thing with a windshield placard. And sometimes networks use independent stringers to shoot the news and send it in. This guy may have been a stringer, he may have been an employee of ABC, he may have been working the audio crew for that or another nearby event for all we know. He sure didn't LOOK like a representative of ABC News. I would think he might be a little better-dressed. This guy dressed and looked like road crew or backstage type.
There are certain types of images that are STANDARD for coverage of such events. Read the AP Style Guidelines. That and other publications spell out how to cover such events.
We see nobody reacting to his supposedly belligerent remarks, questions, or attitudes. Where are there images of any kind of confrontation, gesticulation, people in each others' faces, pointing at each other, arguing or yelling? Those kinds of images are easy to get if you're there. I've covered a hell of a lot of marches and protests, trust me. You ALWAYS get the shot of people pointing at one another, clearly arguing or shouting. That's SOP. You get the protest signs with a crowd in the background. That's SOP. You get the cops to one side "keeping order," you get the counter-protesters, and maybe a shopkeeper or two. These are SOP for reporting such stories and WE SEE NOTHING OF THE KIND to back or illustrate the claims made in this story.
Did you even see any placards in the background that say MOSQUE or GROUND ZERO or anything to indicate these images can be truly authenticated to that event? I did not. I tried to read the signs in the story, and I don't clearly see anything relating to a mosque or Ground Zero.
That's all this is about. If I'm told to take something as fact, especially something that's highly politically or socially-charged, I want to see proof, I want to see a bibliography of evidence, I want to see indisputable FACTS that I cannot ignore, not somebody telling me to believe them just because they say so. Especially in print. I want to see the research, and judge for myself.
And I'm not even going to get into the fact that the writer of the story admits right up front that she was there to speak against the mosque or cultural center or whatever it will be. That biases her automatically, and any decent editor is going to realize that.
And all I'm saying is, I DON'T CARE WHO THE MEDIA OUTLET IS, you always question THE FACTS that you can see from the RHETORIC that you might have to read beyond.
I'm afraid that I've received my opinion on liberals from multiple sources. Including non biased sites. I realize that not every liberal is the same. But there is generally a consensus. Your statement here shows that you have the generally belief that every conservative here sticks to the big sites for their information and debating, or at least that we all stick to conservative slanting forums and such.
Do you not have a general idea of what you think most conservatives believe? Of course you do. Though you are entitled to your holier than thou belief. For instance I would say the generally consensus is that most conservatives would favor something being done to stop the mosque in New York from being built at the specified location. But I believe doing anything would be a direct violation of our constitution and therefore do not support it. However, I wouldn't consider you at fault for claiming that conservatives want something done to stop the mosque from being built.
