Many media analysts say that today’s summit is all about the President gaming the healthcare debate. In fact, there is a much more interesting story at hand: The impact on the American conservative class—and its impact on legislators.
This “Healthcare Summit” is the first and most visible litmus test of conservative leadership in Washington. Simply: After the elections in New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts, conservatives are watching to see what kind of people they have sitting opposite the President.
For half a century, conservative voters sent their representatives to Washington, only to watch many of them bow and retreat before their liberal counterparts. This was due, in part, to a monopoly of the press by the left, which allowed every debate to be defined by their terms.

Still, the result was that conservatives felt betrayed and insulted. Either they had voted for a person who thought that the people who elected them couldn’t understood (or learn) the issues at hand, or they had elected a person who was so weak they couldn’t or wouldn’t formulate an argument to defend their principles.
Those days are gone. Conservative voters are turning the tables. What remains to be seen today is how “conservative” legislators respond to their conservative voter base.
In less than a generation, the information age and the new media landscape has changed, and conservative voters are armed, informed, articulate and engaged. Watching their elected representatives genuflect, compromise and surrender under the guise of “civility” grows less appealing by the day.
For a century, when the political left took a swing, the typical response on the right was “…what did I do wrong?”
Not anymore. The South Sider from Chicago has given rise to an unapologetic conservative movement that is ready to swing back, confident in telling their representatives that fighting for your values is more important than being liked.
Which brings us back to the Healthcare Summit, and what’s making it interesting:
Specifically, it is not about the President. People know his shtick. What people don’t know is what conservatism will look like there: The old milquetoast mush-mouths, or conservatives with bone, sinew and spine, ready for a fight.

This “summit” is an open door for conservatives to spotlight the differences between the nanny state and the free market. History and experience show that conservatives hold the winning hand, seen for example, in the gap between the successful HSA program and the failure of state-run options found in Tennessee and Massachusetts.
Yes—it’s political theater, and as such it will be judged far more on style than on content. That is why conservatives want their players to show up with their best lines, well rehearsed, and delivered with strength, confidence and passion.
Voters will be watching for conservative leaders want to get into the fight—not avoid it.
Those who do, will get their support. Those who don’t will be suspect.
How can one tell? What is the litmus test?
For a century, the left has known that the proper question can both frame and overpower any response in a debate. The classic is: “If elected, will you promise to stop beating your wife?” The question itself frames the whole debate, and neuters the opposition.
This is a tool that can be used by anyone—and conservatives are now catching on.
Here are a few questions that conservatives would like put to the President:
Question: Mr. President, the people in my district are sick of losing their jobs! Why are we having a health care summit when we have more people out of work than ever before in history?
Question: Mr. President, there are over a dozen doctors in the House and Senate. Why are we having a health care summit without doctors? What kind of message do you think that sends to the American People?
Question: Mr. President, considering the failure of FEMA, AMTRACK, TSA, Freddie and Fannie and other government agencies, what makes you think that the American people want the federal government to run health care?
Question: Mr. President, your bill promises to cut billions out of Medicare fraud and abuse, yet in the year that you have been in office, you have failed to cut any fraud and abuse. If you haven’t done it yet, what makes the American people think you will do it later?
Question: Mr. President, you have frightened and confused all the people on Medicare in my district. Why have you singled out the weak, the elderly and the infirm for cuts in benefits that they were promised and have paid for all their lives?
Question: Mr. President, we could purchase private insurance for every single uninsured person in America for about 60 billion dollars. So why would you think the American people want to spend twice that on a government-run plan?
Conservatives across America expect civility. But they also expect that their representatives stand tall, and clearly represent their values and beliefs. It will be the conservative’s questions, not the answers that will frame the debate. Those with the courage to re-frame the debate the President, in a public forum, will reap supporters near and far.
Those who don’t….

They are now trying to use the same tactics that won Obama the elections to make it appear that health care bill has widespread support. Pathetic

Today is just about them trying to save their power in Washington.
Both parties.
Nothing more.
Just a big waste of time.
All excellent questions. However, the opposition will have little voice in this debate. It's all about preening in the glow of America's spotlight today, and highlighting whatever parts they think are good, and glossing over the bad.
Those are great questions, but why bother asking when you know you will only get lies for answers? The time for talking is over, the time for voting is drawing near.
A bunch of sob stories about how poor people are suffering by the libs and an attempt for the RINOS to show that their spines are not just limp linguini.
Too bad—too late—not buyin' it.
I am tired of the old milquetoast mush-mouths
I am tired of no sinew and spine
I am tired of not being "ready for a fight."
I am tired of the same ole' schtick (love this word)
I am tired of political theatre
I want to hear hard edged questions!
I want to hear hard edged answers!
I want to see my representatives have a spine!
I want to see actions backing up spoken words!
And most of all I want to be heard!
And I would really love to see every one of the questions above asked of the Despot in Chief….
Maybe we should waterboard….Oh! Did I say that?
Humorous cartoon about Obama failing relationship with the American people at http://drawfortruth.wordpress.com/category/obama/
If they want to control prices and make sharp medicare cuts, we have rationing. A good Doc can easily cut about 10 your a week. Obama is the biggest problem facing medicine.
Did any of you fellow comment generators pay any attention to their discussion today. Zero got pwned by Cantor and Alexander already, and I have not even gotten to see/hear others yet.
I must hand it to Barry, he sure is a smooth talker and a salesman. I still wouldn't buy a used car from him.

Obama should have a real sinking feeling now…
.I just was over at SALOON.com, reading the comments posted by the kooks…
Even they find Obama and the Dims pathetic, ridiculous, and in way over their collectivist fat heads…Now when your core supporters don't support you and make fun of you, there's trouble in looneyland.. ….
Right on. I cannot stand these ridiculous (and possibly made up) stories about a single person who probably could be on government assistance if they tried, and for those few Americans who are not eligible for Govt help and cannot afford insurance privately, they will take a wrecking ball to the whole system and rebuild it into a twisted, bureaucratic nightmare. Thats government for you. Don't fix it, replace it with money that is not yours.
While one hand was waving all the "smoke and mirrors" over at Blair House. The other hand was busy trying to screw our intelligence gathering efforts.

"…'cause, I'M the President."
That's the sound bite of this "show" so far. What an arrogant, elitist jerk. Is this the "hope & change" the dolts wanted?
And people (mostly liberals and media types) called BUSH arrogant?
Republicans called Obama's bluff today and were spectacular. House democrats, like Bart Stupak, are cheering back at the Capitol. While they will try to bluff something through, the disgust was front and center at today's summit.
Did Obama schedule this summit to tell us the election's over and he's the president?
CL: Perhaps I am blinded by extreme loathing therefore do not find O'Bummer a smooth talker and I would not buy anything at all from him, particularly his lies. And he er, unh, aaaand, i am the president, unh, er, y'know, unh … really is not at all articulate w/o his teleprompter pals.
ObamaCare in football terms
The Democrats (RATS) came on the field with a large team advantage over the Republicans (GOPS) in both offense and defense (House/Senate). They also brought their own referee, Obama (OBOZO). No coin flip, OBOZO simply declares the RATS will start with the ball on the 50 yard line while the GOPS will sit on the bench.
The RATS huddle and start, by the 4th down they have not made any progress. Then OBOZO calls a 20 yard penalty on the GOPS (still on the bench). Next, because of a series of fumbles, dropped passes and generally running into each other, the RATS could not get any closer to the goal. They looked to OBOZO for more help but unfortunately he was mugging for the press.
Now it's the 2nd half, the RATS get the ball again on the 50 and OBOZO has announced a new rule where the GOPS are required to discuss their playbook with the RATS, then go back and sit on the bench.
Meanwhile the crowd seems to be getting restless, will the RATS be able to score?
I tend to agree. I was just trying to toe the party line. A, er, ya know, ummm, ahh build a brotha up!
Love the pictures, thanks for the big laugh.
My vote…Winner: Cantor. Losers: All others.
that's a hoot. maybe they're wanting a complete and total failure today so a broad government system takeover is more likely.
basically …yes. he's such an insecure a-hole.
Funny AND True!!!
Hold on…it's going to get rough.
Pretty much. I'm not that pumped about any future elections because there are still a Hell of a lot of people who delude themselves into believing that a Republican will fix something. It's the conservatism, stupid.
I'm assuming they were core supporters, I don't think that many Conservatives even go there, let along comment..
he ONE has turned himself into #2…hehe…
Hey fantum
You forgot your usual mandatory links….I was actually going to check one out today…
The republicans missed out on a chance to call bullsh!t on hopey and his entire cabal. They should have listened for twenty minutes, stood up en masse, and walked out on live TV while Boehner said "you know Barack, this more of the same old crap you've been trying to peddle for a year now. Come on down to the hill when you are ready to get serious. Good day".

FIRE IT UP! …. a …..Fire it Up …..a ….fire it up ? …..a………………………hello?….
Yeah but it caused Zero to look like an absolute ass in that he openly hints that campaign and governance are two different things. This is not going to sit well with his side of the aisle.
Yes, obama you are president. For now.
I watched, popcorn and Dr.Pepper at my side… Momma's little princess woke me up for her walk about 2 hrours later…
LOL
Paul Ryan and Lamar Alexander did a fantastic job of explaining their differences and what the American people want from healthcare reform. The President was nasty, aloof (as usual), and Pelosi, Reid, and Biden did not even LOOK at Alexander while he was speaking. Pelosi's hatred for all things conservative (and that means most of the American people) is so obvious. Glad the camera angle caught her and Reid not even paying Alexander (and how many others?) the simple courtesy of looking at them while the spoke. The Repubs surprised me with their preparedness and their candor. Some of them even exhibited a SPINE today. YAY! Not that it will matter with the bill, but at least the progressives are outed for who they are and for their disdain toward the American people.
I got angry after awhile and had to take the pups to the river to cool off…then I came back and watched a bit and decided I needed to shut it off again…and went back to the river. At least it is a beautiful day here, it felt like spring. Glad you got a nap wldbil…sounds smarter than me getting angry.
Actions, not words. I will be watching…
"…milquetoast mush-mouths…"
OK, I like that!!!
I just love how the One was being so bi-partisan today. Basically he said either the Republicans get in line or their moving ahead. I read and thought "Wow, the One could sure write a book about how NOT to bring a group together." That and he could write another book about how to be a pompous ……..
I'm no fan of Bush but at least his head wasn't so big it couldn't fit through the White House front doors. The One gets even me annoyed after a few minutes of his pompous speeches. And they've gotten astronomically worse since he was president.
That's priceless.
Having owned a Great Dane, it wasn't the chihuahuas that were intimidated. The little dogs were the ones that showed the most ferocity. The German shepherds would take one look and walk away, but the little yappy dogs got right in his face. Of course, the little yappy dogs weren't very bright.
Love the picture, however. Danes are great dogs.
For the avoidance of doubt, reply was relating to the staged event today, nothing more. Cantor was the only person in the room that stated specific fact backed up by stats and references.
The RNC is just as corrupt as the DNC. From the perspective of corruption, they are Siamese twins.
Paul Ryan is a stud.
He and Sen. Coburn are rising stars, and so far seem to have not lost their souls inside the Beltway yet. And Dems can’t stand them because the deal in FACTS and not smoke and mirrors.
Alexander was impressive as well. For Reid to question anyone’s integrity is laughable.
The RNC is just as corrupt as the DNC. From the perspective of corruption, they are Siamese twins.
Or to make it more evident to the voters that he doesn't want to answer those questions, he is only in it for a power grab.
What Obama doesn't get…..
1) Just because you are the President, that doesn't mean that you can or should push your ideals on the entire country.
2) The existing Medicare System already has "Death Panels" and is very limited in it's coverage, Medicare is the largest refuser of medical procedures, why force that kind of system on the entire country?
3) You are not a neutral party so stop pretending that you are.
4) Even those who might benefit some by Obamacare don't want it, what makes you think that they do?
5) Already having a plan you openly want is not negotiating!
the last 5 minutes is the most telling….. "I guess that Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi will be hearing all kinds of complaints when they do what they have to do to pass this legislation." In other words, YES WE CAN AND WILL FORCE THIS DOWN YOUR THROAT.
Bush consistemtly proved that he had principals and a moral compass and although he let his style of "bipartisanship" get the best of him sometimes (spending – spending – spending) I always felt he was a humble mam from a politcally prominant family and he worked his way into the presidency.
You'd think a man from humble beginnings would have a natural humbleness about himself.
Obama and Bush are from polarly divergent worlds, and who's the arrogant one? The poor kid from Hawaii.
Lemme in Coach! I wanna HIT SOMEBODY!
I don't think it matters, he wouldn't recognize the truth if it jumped up and bit him in his elitist @ss. We could still do it, but it would be for entertainment purposes only.
They are ALL pathetic.
Lol! I am sure he would love to write a book on "How to be Pompous"…and maybe one on the "The Dangers of Not Allowing the Pompous Their Just Do" ….or "How To Malign the Enemies Talking Points"….I think I could go on and on and…. ;^)
You got to admit the left didn't make themselves look that good and the Republicans finally got their HC plan some attention. We have to look at the bright side where we can….and now begins the discussions on the fall out of the whole affair. Should be interesting….let the news cycle begin!
Most are here…

US Taxpayer has alot of good info thanks…
Mr. Darken.
Being completely exhausted could be the reason I can't think of another to add to your list after giving it a few minutes of thought. Or more likely you nailed the perfect list. Because until we get those questions answered nothing else matters.
Any wonder why people who can make contributions to improving the private sector and the economy are actually trying to find ways to cash out instead. And until your questions have meaningful answers nothing will get better until the rats are out of the kitchen.
There's more of us than there are of them. We are the big dogs holding them accountable until the Republicans get a spine, and reinforcements in November.
.
Yup, and today the lefty rags are all full of how Obama's commanding presence and silver tongue dominated the discussions. Also, how Obama masterfully deflected criticism from Republicans and poked holes in their arguments.
Pathetic.
I wish the Republican representatives to the "summit" would have pushed the "visual" bill comparison more. I thought it was a beautiful tactic when the 2400 page Senate bill was brought out and stacked right next to the Republican proposal. The American people love visuals (the MSM uses/abuses them all the time). When the )o( saw that, I thought he was going to pop a blood vessel and light up a smoke right then & there. That was a curveball the "stacked deck summit leader" did not expect. He is not used to dealing with the unexpected. I am expecting the head of one or more of his handlers to come rolling out the door of the West Wing any moment. His response was equally as beautiful, in that it emphasized how he cannot cope with situations he is not prepared for. How sophomorish his response was… "Not fair".
just repudiate the debt and start over. paper money backed by gold. the usa ability to produce goods and services is gone.
Brett, all of your questions are null and void to the one real question. Mr President, how can you mandate health care when it's a violation of the law of the land, the Constitution.? That power was never given to the federal government. Funny how all of the media and the political hacks miss this one question just to allow them to keep a trivial debate going. You are being played for fools, they will pass this thing at all cost.
"The truth will set you free"

Truly pathetic! I just wonder how they are going to explain it all away in the fall….
It was a stupid remark Obama made to McCain about the campaign being over since Obama has yet to STOP campaigning. It was so hypocritical I laughed.
Pretty marvelous post. I ran into your blog and wanted to say your information seems legit. Will keep informed. Thanks.
