Without Noah Webster’s knowledge, the definition of a “racist” has been diluted and redefined to mean “a person who disagrees with a liberal,” or in more explicit terms, “any individual who uses logic to divulge evidence of liberal malfeasance.” For years, the left has used race as a bully tactic to smear and debunk those on the receiving end of the label. This desperate and exploitative attempt at winning political arguments comes at a great cost to democracy, interpersonal relations and our nation’s internal progress.

The latest James O’Keefe saga exemplifies the left’s common practice of exploiting the issue of race for personal and political gain. Liberal journalist Max Blumenthal’s devoid-of-logic theoretical construct (that O’Keefe is a racist) exemplifies the desperate measures some will take to avoid the pains of reality. Blumenthal bases his racism charge on O’Keefe’s alleged disdain for affirmative action, his efforts to expose ACORN and his attendance at an event that featured a “white nationalist.”
The merits of these accusations have already been brilliantly challenged by Larry O’Connor and others, but to quickly provide summary thoughts: Opposition to affirmative action is not inherently racist. In fact, the majority of Americans oppose affirmative action practices. Furthermore, even if O’Keefe is a racist (which he’s not), the allegations against ACORN would still be pertinent; the organization is responsible for its behavior regardless of who or what O’Keefe is said to be. Finally, the “white nationalist” event was essentially a panel discussion on a college campus. Thousands of universities hold events with controversial speakers and wingnuts (many of these fringe individuals are, themselves, college professors); mere attendance means nothing in itself.
What’s ironic is that those waging extremist charges against O’Keefe are the same individuals who had no problem with Barack Obama’s working relationship with former domestic-terrorist Bill Ayers. And let’s not forget Obama’s commiserating with Rev. Wright, a radical former pastor who has publicly stated his belief that the U.S. government created AIDS in an effort to murder African Americans. One would hardly call Ayers’ students (ironically, he’s a professor) unrepentant terrorists merely for showing up to class, nor would one unequivocally compare an attendee’s beliefs to that of the event speaker. Blumenthal’s weak corroborative evidence is rooted in quicksand.
The logic behind this frequently-used bully tactic is actually quite easy to follow. When the left starts flinging charges of racism when race plays no legitimate factor in a given situation, it generally means the individual on the receiving end has pinched an ideological nerve. Rather than debating issues on their merits, “claiming racism” is a strategy through which leftists may turn attention away from viable debate. This cycle has been standard for decades.

As liberals like Blumenthal continue to exploit race, their hypocrisy is deafening. The Democrats’ past and current historical constructs expose a party that is more than guilty of the racial charges it so regularly wages. Consider just a few of the comments, both past and present, that have come from the left:
When speaking about Obama as a potential presidential candidate, Sen. Harry Reid called him:
…a ‘light skinned’ African-American ‘with no Negro dialect,’ unless he wanted to have one.
And who can forget Joe Biden’s eloquent pre-campaign analysis of Obama: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”
And then there’s Al Gore’s former campaign manager, Donna Brazile. According to Brazile:
Republicans bring out Colin Powell and J.C. Watts because they have no program, no policy. They have no love and no joy. They’d rather take pictures with black children than feed them.
Last, but not least, was Lyndon B. Johnson’s alleged statement: “I’ll have those [insert “n-word”] voting Democratic for the next 200 years.”
And these are only a few examples. When it comes to “claiming racism,” the left needs to stop playing the dangerous game of “kettle or pot.” History undoubtedly shows the Republican Party’s staunch support for civil rights and the Democratic Party’s startling disregard for these same egalitarian tenets. After all, it was the GOP’s own Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves and began the painful process of social reconstruction. This history is essential to understanding how racial charges based on party affiliation are inaccurate, especially considering the Democratic Party’s dark civil rights history.

Take, for instance, the 1860 Republican Party platform, which made significant statements against the spread of slavery. The following was written in the declaration:
That the normal condition of all the territory of the United States is that of freedom; That as our Republican fathers, when they had abolished Slavery in all our national territory, ordained that “no person should be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law,” it becomes our duty, by legislation, whenever such legislation is necessary, to maintain this provision of the Constitution against all attempts to violate it; and we deny the authority of Congress, of a territorial legislature, or of any individuals, to give legal existence to Slavery in any Territory of the United States.
Additionally, the platform had the following to say about the African Slave Trade:
…the recent re-opening of the African slave-trade, under the cover of our national flag, aided by perversions of judicial power, as a crime against humanity and a burning shame to our country and age; and we call upon Congress to take prompt and efficient measures for the total and final suppression of that execrable traffic.
These same sentiments are reflected, with stronger emphasis, in the Republicans’ 1984 platform, with the Democrats managing to ignore the words “slave” and “slavery” altogether (their 1860 party platform made no declarative statement to protect the slaves). Furthermore, it was the Republicans who introduced and ensured passage of the Civil Rights Acts of 1866 and 1875. Perhaps Bruce Bartlett said it best when he wrote the following:
[The Democrats] were openly and explicitly for slavery before the Civil War, supported lynching and “Jim Crow” laws after the war, and regularly defended segregation and white supremacy throughout most of the 20th century.

Undoubtedly, any and all political parties can have racist adherents, as racism crosses cultural and ideological boundaries. That in mind, both recent and historical events should, at the least, cause liberals to think twice before making hypocritical claims. Furthermore, Blumenthal and his minions would do well to build arguments based on fact and ideological flow, rather than resorting to base and inflammatory accusations. Utilizing race as a tool to disarm the opposing party’s micro-arguments is a weak-minded and dangerous strategy.
In terms of contemporary analysis, this piece in no way attempts to support the notion that racism no longer exists; that’s just silly. American society, both past and present, has been gravely stained by horrific acts of hate and racially-motivated suppression. That said, the left’s shameful tactics constitute an assault on civility, racial unity and the practice of practical discussion and debate. Shameful, inappropriate and counterproductive.

Well,if this is the biggest arrow the left has in its quiver, then all they can do is keep firing it again and again till everyone has acquired a sort of rhetorical immunity from it….and so much the better for that.
Which is why I say being called a racist is becoming a badge of honor, much as a purple heart. If you haven't been called a racest lately, then you are not on the front line to stop our descent into another failed socialist state.
Racism is the most primitive form of socialism. Its the left who are the socialist racists but they are too hypnotized to realize it.
The left are constantly throwing the word racist at the Tea Parties, as we know. The Tea Parties are "too white" they say.
This is anti-white racism, plain and simple. White people are not allowed to gather in groups? And once again, the white tea party members react the wrong way:
"We're not racist! We promise! Look at the 4 black people over there, look at the Hispanic guy!" and they desperately try to recruit and champion token non-whites.
No. Wrong. You don't have to prove how non-racist you are. You have nothing to apologize about for being white, and for being in a group with other whites, protesting. Nothing. What is this the Thought Police? Like you said in the article, they're not calling you racist because they care if you're racist or not, they're using it as a tactic to shut you up and make you cower in fear and to ruin you.
So why respond directly to the actual racism claim if it's bogus anyway? Why try to prove how racist the other side is like with the examples you gave? This is like dueling racism among whites. It's embarrassing.
Andrew Breitbart and you guys are on the right track, but you need to go one step further. Tea Party: "Yeah we're white and we're not apologizing for it." Done. Because propping up token minorities or trying to prove how non-racist you are ACCOMPLISHES NOTHING. It does the opposite. They won, because they successfully tapped into white guilt.
Until White people learn this they will continue get trampled on like the Tea Parties are.
As the article clearly identifies, the democrats have a terrible track record on racism, including the current impoverishment through the welfare state. But we live in am upside down world where facts are meaningless and absolute truth ignored. Blacks still see those who have enslaved them for generations as their heroes. Not only is that terribly sad, but it is serving to help destroy America.
I have no qualms about telling any liberal to take the race card and shove it. They are usually in a state of shock to say anything after that.
i'm sorry mr. hallowell but this sounds like racism to me!!!
don't you see? we're all racists! it's so simple.
on the count of 3, let's all chant, "we are racists!"
This is why the "progressives" are so invested in the Department of Education. Paraphrasing Winston; "I am not concerned with history, for I intend to write it" is what the progressives have learned. They have washed clean the history of liberalism; Steven Douglas, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Robert "Sheets" Byrd, George McGovern. All of the previous have been scrubbed out of their historical context. Why, because they could!
We, as a society, do not insist that our children learn history! What is taught by the loons running our schools place more emphasis on Rosa Parks than George Washington. I have no truck with Ms. Parks courage, indeed I admire her a great deal; but she and her actions do not lay on par with our first President. As I understand it, the state of North Carolina will not require history curiculum to include anything prior to 1877. As such, Presidents Washington thru Ulysses S. Grant and any accomplishments are not pertinent to the US. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I pray that this disease can be excised; but more people/voters are going to have to stand athwart this and scream "ENOUGH"!
You are on the money with this one – and it's hardly limited to politics. There are some people who will call you a racist the first time you disagree with them. They are rare, but I have bumped into them before and probably will again. Race baiting happens all the time, and it works way too often. Also I realy dislike the attitude that only white people can be racist. I know better (Farakan for one) but nobody seems to acknowledge it. In fact, if you mention it, You will be pegged as one.
Ah hahahahahahaha, asking the left to think first about anything other than how to destroy America while padding their own pockets is if it weren't so dangerous laughable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bigplankton, I agree. We don't need to "prove" we're not racist, it's up to the person making the charge to do so. This tactic has been so overused that it is meaningless. I must be doing something right as I have been charged with this often recently for supporting stiff penalties and stronger enforcment on employers who are employing illegal immigrants.
Whenever I am accused of something I am not or haven't done, it usually turns out that my accuser is attempting to justify something they have done, or is about to do, or would really like to do. Somewhat along the lines of "it takes one to know one".
As a white guy from a family that has never been more than working class, who moved here from another country, even I feel the fear of being labeled racist by the left and have felt the "white guilt". It is just so prevalent in society here.
Unfortunately, I have met many racists while working in the trades. The most horrific example of a racist I employed was a black man. On the other hand the least of these, the most openly friendly and fair to others, was also a black man.
I have to admit that for many, many years, I found myself tough-tied when arguing with a moonbat as soon as he/she dropped the race card in. The technique worked very well on me!
But since coming here, I have learned from the writers at AB's BIGs and from my fellow posters here: now I wear the racist insult like a badge of honor and have not backed down from a liberal goon since. In fact. I have found them to be cowardly weasels.
As soon as they realize you have laughed-off their accusation, they cut and run!
I live in Arizona. I started blogging in August, 2009 dealing mostly local and state issues. I posted an article critical of Rep Raul Grijalva and was immediately labeled a racist by those on the left. [A badge I now wear proudly]. What I found most interesting [although not surprising] was that all of the facts that I presented in my post were totally ignored. I should write another article titled Zero to Racist in under 30 days……
Hear, hear! The one loudly proclaiming racism are consistently the biggest racists. " Liberals look at the world and see themselves, and they don't like what they see". – Jackpine Savage
Is this the only weapon the mindless left know any longer?
It would seem that from day one they raise their children on the word 'racist' without ever imparting the connotations and the implications of its use.
If the hardcore leftist offspring of the hardcore pothead left only understood how badly they were being used to empower the very racists they claim to despise with their shrill arguments…
Laugh in their ugly faces every time they say it. They are LOSING and they know it. Their desperation sustains me.
I don’t think that the ‘qualifier’ – “..this piece in no way attempts to support the notion that racism no longer exists” – is needed in this article, but do understand why it was done.
IMO, and from personal experience since Obama started running for Office, Obama has brought “Hope and Change” to those who have been (or will be) labeled “racists” by Liberals. I visit lefty “white” blogs and AfroSpear/afrosphere blogs (yes, the blogosphere is not segregated enough for black racists), and will immediately accuse any of them of supporting racism if they attempt to label me a racist, i.e. the labeling stops when they are confronted with the simple fact that Obama was a member of the racist TUCC group for over 20 years. Here’s one of my favorite quotes about Obama trying to give cover to Rev. Wright and TUCC:
“Sen. Obama equated Rev. Wright’s envenom, propagation of hate, and decades of inflammatory tirades to 10,000 parishioners to the occasional bigoted sneer by his white grandmother –– whom he later called “a typical white person.””
To hear the likes of a Jeremiah Wright, a Otis Moss, a James Meeks, a Leah D. Daughtry, a Fard Muhammad, an Elijah Muhammad, a Malcolm X, a Louis Farrakhan, a Jesse Jackson, an Al Sharpton, a Keith Ellison, a Warith Muhammad, a Siraj Wahhaj, etc accusing the United States of “300” or “400” years of slavery exposes their hatred of whites, and their lack of knowledge on the history of both the United States and slavery. Such black racists ignore the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), followed some *78* years later by the American Civil War (1861–1865), and the Arab-Islam Slave Trade history (which continues today).
Yes, “The Left Should Think Twice Before Charging ‘Racism’” … at least twice!
Yes it is.
Except among the Left's "elite" or "leadership". They purposely exploit and manipulate people because it creates factions and serves to divert attention from they're real agenda. Being wrong doesn't mean your stupid. They are very clever, and they have been attacking us for decades. 'bout time we started organizing!
No one is stopping blacks from showing up at Tea Parties. The fact is, if you look, you find plenty of blacks involved politically on the right.
But if people want to criticize someone for a lack of blacks in the movement, they should jolly well criticize the blacks themselves. This segment of American society eagerly throw away its vote each election by auto-voting on the 'D' line. This is a supremely stupid thing of them to do, and not in their interests. The Dems simply count on their votes, so they need to do nothing at all for blacks.
Dick Morris explains it this way (I paraphrase): A Dem candidate needs to get to 51 percent of the vote. He says, "Well, we have the blacks, we only need X% to get to 51%." A Republican says, "Well, we won't get the black vote, so we need to work extra hard to get to 51%."
Blacks shoot themselves in the foot every time they auto-vote on the 'D' line. And they should be criticized for it.
I have never owned a slave, I have never been a slave, I do not know anyone who believes in slavery, and I most certainly do not believe in it. I was raised to treat others as I would want to be treated. Racists are in every population, no matter what color, culture, religion or creed. The lefts collective memory must be failing them, as white Americans helped propel our current fuhrer into office. The use of the term "racist" by the left is not only classic projection, but it is a tool used for one of their primary objectives, which is divide, then conquer the enemy.
Excellent post.
The fact that more blacks aren't involved with the Tea Party movement or the Conservative platform is on them.
We welcome all like minded folk regardless of race, creed, or color.
Can't wait to call them racist all those who currently make the charge against anyone who disapproves of Obama. For certainly it will come to pass that the actions of this administration will eventually meet with their disapproval. On the other hand, maybe they are just too intellectually dishonest. All those who railed against the Patriot Act under Bush have been awfully quiet considering it has just been extended for another year, just as an example. And with the death toll of our military continuing to rise, I am wondering, where have all the war protesters gone? Gone to Brunch specials, everyone…?
I always found that curious in an incredulous kind of way.
White conservatives get accused of being racists all the time with immunity to the accuser.
However, if a white person accuses a black person of being a racist, the accuser is deemed a racist.
eg. Beck accuses Obama of not liking white people, and Beck is now a racist just for putting it out there.
Its win/win for the race baiters.
Its insanity to any fair minded person.
The Democrat (Liberal) Party would have minorities suckle off the teat of welfare thus creating a new class of slavery. Slavery where the government supplies the chains refuses to wean the recipient, intentionally forcing its citizens just as if they where loading them onto cargo ships.
This is a brilliant article. I am interested in history and plan on going back to school to finish my history degree. One of the things I'm interested in is the history of the political parties in America. In particular the Republican Party. Where did you find the 2 pictures featured in your post? (the poster of the 2 platforms and the black and white drawing) Thank you. Yvonne
Perhaps we need to define terms.
Racism, as I understand it, is the actions taken by a person or group with the intent to exclude one group or refuse to associate based upon race.
As I understand it, the Tea Party "salt of the earth" crowd has not sought to exclude or refuse to engage in their movement with anyone on the basis of race.
However, it is also my understanding that certain groups have openly made statements that show an intent to not engage with the Tea Party folks, based upon their perceived racial makeup. If there is racism involved, it appears to be against…not by…those folks who are opposed to a naked government grab of their tax dollars.
In addition, it appears that the very folks who are shouting "Racist" at the top of their lungs, are the same ones calling Rubio a "coconut", called Condi Rice filthy names, call Tea Party participants "tea-baggers", called every black Republican a "sell out", "Uncle Tom" or House "N".
Just because they didn't follow the leftist agenda.
Hypocrisy, thy name is race baiter.
I'll never understand why whites voting for McCain were racists, but blacks voting for Obama weren't.
GREAT article, love those pictures.
The day when the Left would stop calling Republicans, conservatives and Tea Party supporters "racists" is when hell actually freeze over. For the Left, that is.
Different country, same agenda and tactics
British liberals drive oppostion into silence by branding all legitimate complaints "racist" . Now documents prove part of Labour Party (liberals) agenda to permenantly transform electorate into liberal voting block.

Where are the secret DNC and CAP strategy papers? Are there no loyal Americans working for them willing to expose their fraud?
Slavery is still in place folks. The government we have in place is there on the backs of hardworking tax payers. When elitists scream for more funds for welfare, they should have the "racist" term applied to them. I understand that "tax payers" aren't a race, but don't think for a minute they hill don't consider us subhuman…
Great article. Donna Brazile's comments are illustrative. "They have no love and no joy. They’d rather take pictures with black children than feed them ". Ms. Brazil sees herself as a benevolant farmer whose duty it is to feed black people. Ms. Brazile sees us all no different than farm animals that need to be fed, housed, & given medicine. The other side of the coin is that, if we are all animals, it is normal that we express out animal nature — promiscuity, violence, sloth… It is only our divine nature — we are made in image and likeness of God — that helps us rise above this. If you treat people like farm animals, they will eventually behave like farm animals. Hayek — in "Road to Serfdom" expressed it in different — less religious terms, but we draw the same conclusion.
“If you look at folks of color…even women…are more successful in the Democratic Party than they are in the white — excuse me — in the Republican Party” (former Democratic Party chairman Howard Dean)
Republicans are weak and inarticulate. How else to explain that the party of slavery: the Democrats; the party that brought us Jim Crow laws: the Democrats; the party of the Ku Klux Klan: the Democrats; the party that fought against the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendment (freeing slaves, making citizens of ex-slaves): the Democrats; the party that has a "black caucus": the Democrats can have made the Republicans look like the racists.
The Democrats are the party that has a former KKK member (senator for life Robert Byrd) who says things like: “There are white niggers. I’ve seen a lot of white niggers in my time. I’m going to use that word.”
Here is a good link for you to learn some history about Black Republicans: http://www.nationalblackrepublicans.com/DYK
Another reason the Democrats keep yelling, "RACIST!" at every argument they lack the intelligence, facts and logic to make response is psychological projection – In other words, the Democrats are what they say the Republicans are," RACISTS!"
Democrat Party: The party of slavery, segregation, socialism and RACISM!
O WHAT DISGUSTING FILTH AND TRAITORS ARE THE DEOMCRATS!
You can only cry wolf so man times until people finally realize their is no wolf.
The article says most in the USA are against affirmative action yet we still got an affirmative action president.
Obama had no qualifications for the job and yet he still got it because he was a minority.
The racist accuser is always the real racist. They must always view things in a racial context in order to validate themselves. They never accept another without basing their evaluation on the color of the other's politics.
They use of racism as a tool to destroy any and all who disagree with them.
I admit I'm a racist. Mostly Indy Car, but I occasionally cross cultural boundaries and do NASCAR and even bikes.
Racism gets into your blood, ya know?
[...] The Left Should Think Twice Before Charging Racism [...]
The real racists for the last 150 years
CHICAGO — Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan claims the "white right" is trying to make Barack Obama a one-term president.
The 76-year-old says the stalling of health care legislation is proof.
Farrakhan is addressing followers of the Chicago-based movement that has embraced black nationalism since its founding. Sunday's keynote speech is before an estimated 20,000 people on the last day of the group's Saviours Day convention.
Farrakhan has vigorously supported Obama. Even so, Obama distanced himself from Farrakhan before his election because of Farrakhan's past statements that were considered anti-Semitic.
During the hours long speech, Farrakhan boasted of being bigger than a prophet.
The Tea Party here in Hawaii has lots of non-whites. The real problem with racism comes from the Democrats, who advocate the divisive and racially biased Akaka Bill that would legally divide the island's residents through race-based legal preference. Nothing new there, really. Democrats have always exploited race and economic class issues for political and economic advantage. History can easily be rewritten and/or ignored when you own the schools, as well.
Having grown up in the 60’s, during the race wars, I have experienced racism firsthand, from BOTH sides. I hated it. I swore I would raise my children differently…I hoped to rise above my past and have the ability to be seen as a person, not as a color. Racism is a horrible thing. I did manage to raise my children not to be biased..
Having grown up in the 60’s, during the race wars, I have experienced racism firsthand, from BOTH sides. I hated it. I swore I would raise my children differently…I hoped to rise above my past and have the ability to be seen as a person, not as a color. Racism is a horrible thing. I did manage to raise my children not to be biased..and am very proud of that. However, I am fearful that the “Reverend” Wrights of this only goal is to reverse the direction of any progress we have made by making the black people hate the white and try to impose slavery and the distribution of the white man’s wealth and property to the black Americans as reparations for slavery. How do you move past the past when the goal is to harm the white people for things we cannot change and would not allow to ever happen in modern times?
The fuhrer (spelling?) that commandeered Nazi Germany believed in annihilating Jews, Blacks, and others. Our current President is indeed the President. He does not have to apologize for his racial background which is a mixed heritage to anyone. The kind of talk in this article and your comments are not just divisive, they are incendiary. The use of that term betrayed your true belief system.
Which schools in the United States do not teach the early history of our country including the life and work of President George Washington? I have never heard of this nor of any action in North Carolina removing the study of history pre 1877? Do you have a link to read more?
There's that great phrase from one of George Bush's speeches: "The soft bigotry of lowered expectations." This is exactly what the Progressives practice–the general idea that every single identity group practices some Groupthink by which they can be manipulated to vote a certain way is the core of the D party. I find it terribly offensive(sexist, even) to suggest that my genitalia determine my thought processes, and that all women are fungible and interchangeable, yet that is what these "enlightened" jacka**es believe!
As long as the liberals shout racist, under-educated people will believe them and vote as they are told to vote. Then the liberals can continue to fund schools in large cities that do not educate and raise a new generation to believe their lies. We put generations of native Americans on reservations and liberals are now designing programs to keep generations of non-whites in ghettos.
The left IS racist. Straight-up racists, to use the Giraffe-alo's words.
Margaret Sanger, doyenne of the Progressives was a self-admitted hater of blacks and wanted them all aborted.
Remember that all a pickpocket sees is pockets. All a racist sees is color. Except, perhaps for one single hour in his racist life.
The first person to shout racist is the racist. Most of us don't see or pay attention to color, but progressives live by color. Why they even say that everything should "look" like America, whatever that means. The progressives are extremely superficial which is why color and looks are important to them. They are the kind of people are the latter-day, Neo-Pharisees, who are described as follows, by Jesus:
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean.
I think Jesus nailed these progressives spot on.
I suppose you must mean liberals use the word "racist" in much the same way conservatives use words and phrases such as "socialist," "communist," "fascist" (!!!), "unpatriotic," and the like, right?
I suppose you must mean liberals use the word "racist" in much the same way conservatives use words and phrases such as "socialist," "communist," "fascist" (!!!), "unpatriotic," and the like, right? You know — Joe McCarthy language, when they're on the fringe right? (Not moderate conservatives.)
speaking of tea party. Can wait until Sarah Palin says Tea bagging. this, will make my day.
BH,
Just because you have a token black friend, doesn't mean you are not a racist.
Just sayin'
