While the mainstream media swarmed all over Bernie Madoff, AIG and corporate billionaires, the gentlemen of the press, who are so proud of fighting for the Little Guy, were mostly out to an expense-account lunch when Melissa King allegedly made off with $42 million rightfully belonging to members of the Laborers International Union of North American (LIUNA).
In what is being called the largest union embezzlement in American history, the LIUNA Local 147 (New York) office administration was apparently unsatisfied with her meager $500,000 a year paycheck.

According to watchdog Carl Horowitz:
LIUNA Local 147 is an elite underground construction unit known as the “Sandhogs.” With roots going back well over 100 years, the heavily Irish-ethnic 1,000-member union represents the workers who dig New York City’s subway, sewer and water tunnels, often at hundreds of feet beneath the ground. It was the sandhogs who did the excavation work for such engineering marvels as the Lincoln, Holland, Queens-Midtown and Brooklyn-Battery Tunnels. Their massive ongoing main project, the Third Water Tunnel, when completed in 2020 at a projected cost of roughly $6 billion, will carry 1.3 billion gallons of water per day for 9 million area residents and ensure that water keeps running should either of the first two tunnels fails. It’s grueling and dangerous work. And the workers are paid well. They also expect to collect their full retirement benefits. But thanks to the alleged actions of Melissa King, there’s a distinct possibility they won’t.
King, 58, a resident of Irvington, N.Y., through her home-based company, King Care LLC, handled all administrative functions for Sandhog benefit funds since 1980, and at an annual official compensation that eventually reached $540,000. That’s pretty lavish even for an international union president. Apparently, it wasn’t lavish enough. Starting in 2002, prosecutors charge, King illegally transferred about $42 million from three union accounts covering pensions, vacation pay and other benefits to accounts she personally controlled. A large portion of it, to put it lightly, was unrelated to union business. Of the alleged thefts, $7.2 million went to pay off American Express bills, more than $3 million to equestrian businesses (apparently she was grooming her daughter for an equestrian career), and $713,500 to a jewelry business. The criminal complaint states she also transferred $500,000 to an E*Trade Securities account without union authorization.

Mrs. King’s lawyers made a routine statement about expected vindication, and claimed in a response to a civil suit by union trustees that she was asked to provide administrative services not usually required, and charged reasonable fees.
The link to her arrest warrant is here.
What is perhaps most shocking in this entire story is not the fact that a union officer embezzled millions (that’s been par for the course for more than a century) nor that the mainstream media initially buried the story (we’re lucky we got a CNN hit from our Andy Stern investigation); it’s that she is alleged to have run up a total of $7.2 million in AmEx debt. Really, that’s just impressive.
To its credit, The New York Times followed its initial report on the case with a an up-close-and-personal look at Mrs. King and her lavish lifestyle.
Out of more than 5,000 owners of horses ranked by the United States Equestrian Federation in hunter events, Ms. King-Kaplan’s horses, as a group, rose to 4th place in 2007 and 2008, from 913th in 2005.
“The family members always wondered how she could afford all those horses,” said Teresa Laggner, a San Diego lawyer who handles the estate of the parents of Ms. King’s fourth husband. “I guess now we know.”

BigUnion (fraud?) …Could be the net BIG for Andrew….
I have often wondered why there wasn't more oversight of union hierarchy by the members. This is the same old story, just at a grander scale. Wonder how much of the embezzled loot went to Andy Sterns for political shenanigans. Love to find him tied to this and see his head on a platter.
Wow. The greed that consumes some people is sickening.
A seven million dollar AMEx bill? Incredible.
Times have changed.
Years ago, the MSM and the Press would have been all over this, had it pertained to Jimmy Hoffa.
Unreal. Bernie Madoff is the MSM/Dem poster boy for Wall Street greed- but this (w)itch who stole nearly as much is swept under the rug.
She is scum, but, the unions are thick as thieves too.
Just to put this in the proper magnitude – Madoff stole over 1,000 times as much. This bitch is a freaking piker compared to him. But, she should be sent down into the tunnels with her union brothas for a little one-on-one.
The leadership fight very, very, very hard to hide their actions by buying politicians, judges and thugs and by suppressing those union members that don't fall into lockstep by any means possible .
"Accidents occur all the time and those who make wave end up making a splash in the Little Calumet or Lake Michigan" was the warning I received and that was from a fellow cop who was very union.
The real scum even worse thaan the kleptomaniac King is the criminals who disquise themselves as the fourth estate. Mr. Breitbart and company keep hammering away each drop you plop onto the boulder that is media corruption is wearing down their public credibilty ans as that fades the lamestream media will fold. finacially.
You seriously question why Madoff would be covered before this?
Back in the mid 80's, the union I belonged to went on strike. We had struck several times before, but never more than a week or two and then my employer would start some new project (!) and things would be good for a few more years. In 1986, things took a different turn. Our strike was real this time. And, 2-3 weeks into the strike, we discovered our strike fund was broke! Seems the Local president had sent it to Ireland to the IRA! Yes, it was an SEIU affiliate!
A union of only a thousand members get ripped off $42 million and it takes them a few years to notice. That would mean that there is a hell of a lot more than that in their funds. In other words, this is another story in the long list of thieves falling out.
Be of good cheer. When the guilty scum are roasting for all Eternity in Hellfire, no one will care about them. They will be screaming and crying and vomiting their blood for all time.
This isn't 1906 – we don't need these massively wealthy and powerful unions. They have outgrown their original purpose and are now just another way for government to infringe upon the private sector. They harm the economy by slowing growth with their inflated wages and benefits, and they do less actual work than non-unionized workforces. Teacher's unions are likely the largest drain on society because they churn out an inferior product [miseducated children] decade after decade and send them into society with an overinflated sense of entitlement and few skills. Personally, I have more respect for a scab who wants to do an honest day's work for his bread than some overpaid union member who produces sub-standard products.
And Barak Milhouse Madoff Obama is the biggest by far of all these thieves…And I used to think Hil-Billy were corrupt….They are saints compared this current crew…At least Bill was on occasion enteraining, in a perverse way…
And as the sun sets on another stellar career ruined by greed and excess, let us pause to thank to unions for all the great work they do. However, it seems a bit weird that the unions keep getting ripped off by the elected representatives and no one checks on them. And the papers don't care. Now the unions are begging for exemptions from being taxed – like everyone else – with this health care thing. I don't know, around 87% of the country isn't in a union. What's the purpose of a union anymore except to make extortionists like this lady rich?
Can't quite tell who is Edgar Bergen and who is Charlie McCarthy here…the unions or the entrenched media.
While some may still believe in "vox populi, vox Dei" it no longer seems to fit the reality. When you strangle the voice of the people, you slap the face of God.
The entrenched media, leftist politicians and the unions are all in each other's pockets. And it appears they are not just…jingling change.
Let's see…Unions, Media, Gov'ment hacks, ClimateScientists, and Academic Intellectuals what do they all have in common besides being corrupt? They're all in the bag for the democrat party…Tues in Mass.could be a beginning of the end for all the fraudsters….Let's not blow it….
You've got my vote…Until we break up the Teachers Unions and close all the Madrassas, this country will always be stuck in the rut we're in…
good point. in a moment of perversely enlightened self-interest you'd think the MSM would blow the whistle just to make sure the money would go to the correct bunch of thieves. they don't mind it being stolen nearly as much as it being stolen by the wrong crooks.
Technically, people gave Madoff money (he did lie though), that bitch took, what wasn't hers, from hard working people.
Gee………I hope she at least had the "AmEx Black Card"i heard it's pretty exclusive
My God! I feel like I am living in Sodom and Gomorrah! What the h e l l happened to the laws, in the United States of America???? I seems like those in high places just keep reaching for more than their share, and don't even care that they get caught!!!
Concur.
Union leadership has replaced the early 20th century monopolists as the villains. Less than 20% of the workforce should not wield its power with such perverse ambitions.
La guillotine shall claim her bloody prize. Or Andy Stern et al will have stolen the USA. Starting Tuesday the picture may brighten for the former.
That is incredible. I knew I was going to love Big Journalism. I also Dugg this, but Digg seems to be infected with kids. I'm going to see what else is out there. We've got to promote these articles on the internets.
I'm so glad to see someone…..anyone dial in on these characters who work for unions who get an obscenely un-checked amount of power over various union financial accounts. I've see too many really good people get a dry-shafting from unions and I've watched the faux 'everyman' who is supposed to be representing them laugh in derision at plain working folks who were simply too unworldly to understand that they'd been robbed in the name of seeing to their interest. Make no mistake my union brothers and sisters out there, many these people look at you like livestock, the openly mock you, and they easily become parasitic.
I know it's a wide spread issue. Memberships across the country need to start taking a really deep look at what's happening and hold their representation and union administration fully accountable. Too many people just "set it and forget it". It's a low down dirty shame that besmirches the idea of organized labor. Not even considering things like the wink and the nod these people recieved from B.O. on the health care taxes.
When you elect complicit fraudsters AG's like Croakley in Mass….We get officials who look the other way when Union corrupters, who donated big to the dems, find themselves in hot water…
I didn't get the impression it was 'before' but 'instead'. Shouldn't they both have been covered?
I guess we can add her tab to the tab the rest of us will have to pay if the Unions get their way about the tax on their health care plans. Of course, good old Barry O and his bootlickers Nancy P and Harry R said no problem; the unions don't have to pay….we'll just pass that billion dollar tab onto tax payers in states that didn't vote for Barry in the election. The unions steal from us and Barry gets even with us….isn't life grand?
Breitbart needs to get this story on the front page of the BOSTON HERALD before the MS, election. SEIU @ BIG LABOR is in MA. ,Along with ACORN @ OBAMA. THE people across the US need to know how corrupt the union bosses are. I have seen the corruption first hand, I went to union conventions , as a rep. for a local. It took years for me to see this corruption. Its in all unions. They rip the membership off, every day.
start the revolution, break out your arms and act like it is 1773
The Union workers are NOT the corrupt ones. Their leaders, Andy Stern & his minions for example, are the crooks.
People like Barack & Michelle Obama & thousands of other progressive Democrats aka socialists, have made their living & upgraded their social status by robbing from the rich to give to the poor. The only problem is that they take 90 cents on the $ for themselves, friends, supporters, and those owed favors. allowing 10 cents on the $ to trickle down to the poor.
In other words, these REPROBATES ( look it up) climb over the backs of the poor on their way to middle & eventually upper class status. At least the rich spend their time robbing from the rich because their isn't enough $ to rip off the poor. While the Obamas. Clintons, Sterns, and those of their ilk steal from the poor by stealing the money taken from both the rich & the MIDDLE CLASS to help the poor.
Therefore I find the rich to be LESS reprehensible than those that become rich by stealing the poor blind while claiming to be the champions of the poor.
Union are microcosmic socialist indoctrination constructs. Protected underachievement just like the welfare state. I've in five of them–only one really seemed to be anything else.
These Unionistas would make old school Mafia Chieftains blanche.
Absolute criminals.
Wow-AmEx let her bill get THAT high? They weren't that kind to me….
The amount taken was $42 million over seven years. That’s only $6 million per year. What’s the big deal?
Can't believe that MSM wasnt all over it. That money she stole could have gone to the DNC. I mean, what is this world coming to when a Democrat can't count on Union funds getting transferred directly from the Union members pockets to their campaigns.
Tis ….nothing….nothing. Obama will cover the loss.
And here I thought this was about the SWEETHEART deal that the UNIONS got
out of OBAMA to EXEMPT the UNIONS from OBAMA'S HEALTHCARE REFORM…….
and the fact that the OBAMA MEDIA …. err the MSM ….. was not covering it.
If you live in Massachusetts, don't forget to vote as many times as possible… We need to negate the super extra effort ACORN is waging this weekend…
And only 60K per Union member…How much were they getting paid? 250K yr? plus 401K and vacation…Not bad for a bunch of "Poor" Irishman…
You got it. Barry Sotero wants his cut.
This deserves coverage, but it's no where near the magnitude of Madoff. Madoff stole a thousand times as much money.
There is a revolution coming that will make 1776 look like a schoolyard. We the people, mean to unseat ALL of these entrenched bloodsuckers then dismantle the useless beaurocracy, then the teacher's unions, starting with the NEA. We need to return to commonsense as the guidepost of our society.
All self avowed Marxist College Professors currently employed by State Universities are going to be required to find honest work for thier sustenance. They will stop eating Tax Money……….Its coming, believe it . There will be tort reform as well. Back room deals between crooked judges and crooked lawyers will be a thing of the past
SOP here for unions. The rank and file members do not wield any power. The Milwaukee Carpenters Union was one of the best funded unions in the carpenters until Chicago, who was having money problems, "convinced" the Milwaukee leadership to combine with them. No debate allowed among the members and no opportunity to vote no. Milwaukee funds are now mixed with Chicago funds. No explanation regarding what happened to Chicago funds was given to us. No further investigation for Chicago and now I get letters stating Milwaukee's pension funds are in trouble. I will be working until I die, just as the comrades want it. Or perhaps government run healthcare will kill me first.

They don't have to worry. There is a government insurance for their pensions. I think its called the Pension
Benefit Corporation, or something like that. The tax payers will cover it for them. Won't we?
This is minor. What about all of Social Security accounts of all Americans, and the US Civil Service Retirement System funds being raided in the early 1970's? All that hard cash now put into the general fund with IOU's being left in place for what you were forced to contribute to. Now, all those funds owed to all of us who paid Social Security or the higher percentage into the CSRS which was fully self supporting, now basically draw their monies from the same pot welfare receipients mooch from. The FBI chased the Teamsters in the 1960's for this exact pension fund raiding practice.
Sort of like, "Let them eat cake", huh? But Obama, the poor are hungry!complains the reporters. His response is."Let them eat donuts!"
I have no comment about the honesty of unions, but those Sandhogs do hard hard work in tough conditions that most other people wouldn't even consider doing. They deserve their union funds, especially retirement to be wisely invested and administered. I'd like to see the MSM make something of this story and look into other union administrators.
$7.2 million to American Express? That's a lot of frequent flyer miles. Should AMEX be liable under the moneylaundering statutes? They had to know her income would not support this kind of buying.
Do you think Unions are any less corrupt than the pricks who leech off of political positions! Leading it all are the jooz! Notice how many joo names are involved in all levels of corruption?!? Start to change the USA by rounding up all the kikes and shipping them out. Cut off all aid to Israel, bring our troops home and start to rebuild the USA! Enforce our borders and stop letting them in! Notice how kikes are behind it all?!?
Makes you wonder just how much the other union leaders have stolen for political gain, personal use and their minion pay-offs. And this all under the guise of taking care of their own. Yeah right! They have negotiated improperly and harbored greed for years for a progressive movement. Maybe a movement many if not most union workers do not want to be in. What will happen to those union workers if the government will not take up the union healthcare for them. There may be many thrown under the bus in the near future. Oh wait a minute, they can always get a government bailout…
Try to poke into what the Union bosses are doing. You will be dead inside a month.
"I'd like to see the MSM make something of this story and look into other union administrators."
You would like that, huh? I understand people in H*ll would like ice water.
BTW, my motto is: Relying upon the State Run Media for your information is like relying upon an embezzler for your portfolio management.
The union leaders are constantly embezzling $ from their membership.
I just saw this article in the Teacher's union magazine….the unions were in Copenhagen.
This is their "green" website. If the membership would only realize that their unions are working on selling off their jobs for globalism.

Ms. King makes "Michael Corleon of the Godfather" fame, look like small potatos.
I am surprised the Sandhogs have not buried her in a tunnel under the river.

For her sake , the government might need tp provide her with serious protection,
