For years, the left has informed us that the right is interested in shutting down scientific inquiry. As President Obama put it:
Our government [under President Bush] has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values … [P]romoting science isn’t just about providing resources – it is also about protecting free and open inquiry. It is about letting scientists like those here today do their jobs, free from manipulation or coercion, and listening to what they tell us, even when it’s inconvenient – especially when it’s inconvenient. It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda – and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.
Of course, the fact is that the left is most interested in curbing science when that science conflicts with political correctness. From comprehensive sex ed for teenagers (which ignores brain science demonstrating that teens are essentially incapable of regulating risky behavior even when given information about it) to global warming (which apparently causes earthquakes according to vagina expert Eve Ensler) to abortion (in which the actual biological development of fetuses is ignored in favor of niceties about cell clusters) to gay marriage (where leftists idiotically state that men and women are gender constructs), the left is constantly shutting down science in the name of ideology.

Nowhere is this more true than in the field of psychiatry/psychology. The history of psychology shows that it is a political football. Sigmund Freud used psychology to suggest that most personal problems were created by sexual repression. The Frankfurt School, for example, used Freudian analysis to suggest that those who disagreed with them (principally anti-communist fascists and capitalists) were mentally ill, and many of the architects of the Frankfurt School (including Erich Fromm) remain historically prominent voices in the field. It is no wonder that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which supposedly embodies the wisdom of the high minds in psychology and psychiatry, is as much a political instrument as it is a health one.
It is important to note, first and foremost, that there is room for fungibility in psychology/psychiatry that there simply isn’t in other health fields. Illnesses are usually self-reported, and diagnosis is often made on the basis of patient self-reporting. The descriptions of afflictions are largely general and difficult to pin down; treatments are very often vague. Take, for example, the DSM-IV’s description of hypochondriasis:
- Preoccupation with fears of contracting, or the idea that one has, a serious disease, based on misinterpretation of bodily symptoms.
- Preoccupation persists despite appropriate medical evaluation and reassurance.
- Preoccupation causes clinically significant distress or impairment.
- Duration of at least 6 months.
Many people would likely fall under this definition who are not actually hypochondriacs. It does not tell you how “preoccupied” you must be with getting sick or being sick; it does not define what “appropriate medical evaluation and reassurance” is; why six months, exactly? The point isn’t that this isn’t the best available definition of hypochondriasis – the point is that the descriptions themselves must be vague, which leaves lots of room for politics.

The current rewriting of the DSM, version V this time, is just as political as past versions. Recall that in 1974, the DSM-II removed homosexuality as a condition, not as a result of research indicating the normality of homosexuality (after all, homosexuality is, was and always will be statistically deviant from the mean, evolutionarily counterproductive, and distressing for many people who engage in homosexual behavior), but because of the supposedly growing “weight of empirical data, coupled with changing social norms and the development of a politically active gay community in the United States.” The DSM-III replaced homosexuality with “ego-dystonic homosexuality,” which was present when someone suffered from persistent lack of heterosexual arousal and persistent distress from a pattern of homosexual arousal. This wasn’t good enough for the DSM, though – that was politically incorrect. The DSM-III removed the disorder in 1986 due to further political pressure.
Today’s psychology textbooks look upon this period as a black mark on psychology, despite the fact that current research does not suggest why exactly homosexuality should be considered normal and unworthy of diagnosis and treatment. The UCLA-utilized textbook Abnormal Psychology: Core Concepts, for example, states:
Reading the medical and psychological literature on homosexuality written before 1970 can be a jarring experience, especially if one subscribes to views prevalent today …
The textbook does admit, however, that “compared with heterosexual men, gay men have higher rates of anxiety disorders and depression, and they are more likely to contemplate suicide … Lesbians also have a higher rate of substance abuse.” Why, exactly, would this factor be ignored in the pursuit of better psychological treatment? The answer is simple: politics.
Nothing has changed in this latest edit of the DSM. DSM-V is largely an attempt to pin down better descriptions of certain psychological states, of course. But there are clearly political influences at work in some areas. For example, the DSM-IV describes pedophilia as follows:
A. Over a period of at least 6 months, recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children (generally age 13 years or younger).
B. The person has acted on these sexual urges, or the sexual urges or fantasies cause marked distress or interpersonal difficulty.
C. The person is at least age 16 years and at least 5 years older than the child or children in Criterion A.
This sounds relatively reasonable, although it omits pubescent children completely. Here are the DSM-V’s proposed edits:
A. Over a period of at least six months, one or both of the following, as manifested by fantasies, urges, or behaviors:
(1) recurrent and intense sexual arousal from prepubescent or pubescent children
(2) equal or greater arousal from such children than from physically mature individuals
B. One or more of the following signs or symptoms:
(1) the person is distressed or impaired by sexual attraction to children
(2) the person has sought sexual stimulation, on separate occasions, from either of the following:
(a) two or more different children, if both are prepubescent
(b) three or more different children, if one or more are pubescent
(3) use of child pornography in preference to adult pornography, for a period of six months or longer
C. The person is at least age 18 years and at least five years older than the children in Criterion A.
There is significant definitional variation between the two versions. First off, the new version includes pubescent children. This is good. But that good is outweighed by several negative features. For example, the first version requires only that the person afflicted with pedophilia have acted on his/her sexual urges. The second version raises the bar; now, the person who has acted on his/her urges is not considered a sufferer if he/she has sought sexual stimulation from only one child. That gives you one freebie, pedophiles, before you’re diagnosed. Here’s the rationale provided by the DSM-V writers:
The clauses pertaining to number of different victims may be understood as follows: Suppose that the patient is assigned 1 point for each pubescent victim and 1.5 points for each prepubescent victim. Then Criterion B is satisfied if the patient has accrued a total of 3 points or higher.
Say what? Since when do we get a point system for pedophiles? Are we playing Super Mario Bros. or trying to diagnose people suffering from pedophilia?

The first version also specified that a 16-year-old having sex with a three-year-old is a pedophile; now you have to be at least eighteen to be a pedophile. How convenient. There is little doubt that we are on the path to the normalization of occasional pedophilia under these standards.
Then there is the DSM-V’s proposal to change the diagnosis of mental retardation to “intellectual disability.” This is no doubt a case of good intentions on the part of the psychology/psychiatry establishment – the word “retard” has been slung around so much by folks like Rahm Emanuel that psychologists and psychiatrists want to avoid stigmatizing those who are in fact mentally retarded. It’s good-hearted and I actually agree with the change, but I fear that this will ultimately be ineffective. While well-intentioned, it is an example of political correctness impacting the DSM – over the years, the terminology for the mentally handicapped has changed from idiots, morons, and imbeciles to retards. None of these were originally considered pejoratives (see, for example, Justice Holmes’ sickening opinion in Buck v. Bell, which reads in relevant part, “Three generations of imbeciles are enough”). Once they became pejoratives, we changed the terms. Somehow, that changed terminology hasn’t ended the practice of using medical language to slander enemies.
The new DSM-V proposals also suggest that sex addiction continue to be omitted as a condition (while maintaining gambling addiction). This seems eminently reasonable to me, especially from a layman’s point of view – sex addiction is in all likelihood an excuse for normal men to act like pigs (if anyone has ever met a man who was not addicted to sex, they should notify their local newspaper – it’s a “dog bites man” story). However, we have been told repeatedly by leading psychologists and psychiatrists that prominent figures like Tiger Woods, Jim McGreevey, Bill Clinton, and Eliot Spitzer suffer from sex addiction. How is it these psychologists and psychiatrists can pull it out of thin air to excuse their political buddies while omitting it from the DSM?

Or how about changing the labeling “gender identity disorder” to “gender incongruence”? Gender identity disorder, for those unfamiliar, is when someone feels as though they are male when they are actually female, and vice versa. Here’s the DSM’s explanation for the change:
It is proposed that the name gender identity disorder (GID) be replaced by ‘Gender Incongruence’ (GI) because the latter is a descriptive term that better reflects the core of the problem: an incongruence between, on the one hand, what identity one experiences and/or expresses and, on the other hand, how one is expected to live based on one’s assigned gender (usually at birth) (Meyer-Bahlburg, 2009a; Winters, 2005). In a recent survey that we conducted among consumer organizations for transgendered people (Vance et al., in press), many very clearly indicated their rejection of the GID term because, in their view, it contributes to the stigmatization of their condition.
Does it get any more political than that? First off, this new name suggests that gender is “assigned” at birth, which is total nonsense. Second, it openly acknowledges that the name was changed for political reasons – to placate transgendered people who feel “stigmatized.”
The biggest potential problem with the proposed DSM changes is a methodological one. The new DSM suggests that those at risk of developing mental disorders be diagnosed based on early symptoms, and also suggests a scaled rather than binary scoring system for diagnosis. There is opportunity here – we all want to see true mental illness diagnosed and treated early – but there is also a danger: the overdiagnosis and possible overmedication of normal people based on wishy-washy symptoms, even if the opposite is intended. Even as the psychology/psychiatry field attempts to define certain deviancies away, they lower the bar on what constitutes illness. This has serious ramifications for both public policy (no doubt Democrats will soon be calling for comprehensive public funding of mental health treatment) and private situations (how many people will be put on newfangled pills to solve problems they don’t really have in a serious way?).
I am no psychiatrist or psychologist, and I don’t pretend to be one. I do, however, believe strongly in the field of psychology/psychiatry. Only by removing the politics from the field can it retain its legitimacy. It is imperative that true mental health professionals look closely at the revisions to the DSM and establish whether changes are being made for the good of patients or for the good of liberal causes. The DSM is supposed to be used for classification and treatment, not defining deviancy down or redefining terminology to fit particular political viewpoints. While President Obama may not take his own admonitions seriously when it comes to science, it is the obligation of every psychologist and psychiatrist to do so – if they do not, they put their own credibility on the line.

He who defines the terms, controls the conversation.
Psychiatry has long been abused by totalitarians to disarm their opponents. Dissidents in the USSR, for example, sent to insane asylums.
How did we all get so screwed up ?
On an important tangent, this highlights the danger of covering "all preexisting conditions…" who gets to define new conditions, and under what level of scrutiny?
well reasoned and said…
Mr Shapiro has many salient points here. However, truth is always a victim when the emotions of the left are involved, and nothing is quite as emotional as their reaction to anything other than homosexuality as a wonderful and rich alternative to being a 'breeder'…
There is little doubt that is aberrant behaviour. Also, too, it is counterproductive to species propagation. It carries increased risk of disease and finally the dead end of all aging homosexuals- no real family. To be one is to more or less die alone.
That homosexual couples are less than desirable as foster parents is apparent to everyone. That the US military should be relegated to social engineering experiment so gay soldiers may feel good about themselves by serving 'openly' as gay is troublesome as well. What is gained from this? Young recruits at the mercy of sexually predatory commanding officers comes to mind. There is NO room for any display of sexuality in the armed forces.
I didn't find "Liberalism" in the DSM-V. It affects about one-third of the American population, but it's not in the DSM-V.
(contd.)
Unit cohesion DOES suffer. Forget the other nations. Their tiny militaries and old world ways may be conducive to such experimentation without the negative results. We can bring a tremendous force of free men (and women) to bear, and they do not need to subjected to such meddling by something as perverse as private sexual practices becoming, somehow, a raisson' d etre'.
Will this hurt someone's feelings? No doubt. Is that ultimately important?
No…
I'll advocate for the homos on the foster-parenting thing. I think it's better to have a committed, stable homo pair raise a child than let the kid remain in a foster home. Foster homes make kids feel unwanted. Children need to know that they belong and are wanted permanently, and the sooner they can be adopted into a family, the better. Again, stability and committed relationships are important. It can't be guaranteed, I know, but foster homes are not good for kids.
As for the military, sexuality has no place. There is enough of an issue with males feeling protective of females in combat situations. The military needs to concentrate on and be preoccupied with ONE thing: COMBAT. Any distraction from this is detrimental. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is the right policy for both homo and heterosexuals.
You're right on the money on this one! Great piece. Always love your stuff. Even you movie and director pics.
Almost as compelling as Tom Cruise's explanation that he knows the history of psychiatry, and that's why he's a Scientologist.
As regard for dcase's comments, homosexuals do have real family. If you actually knew anything about them, you'd know this. Your comment that allowing openly gay soldiers to serve will lead to sexual predators in the military reveals the extent of your ignorance about homosexual people. That criticism is no more valid than if I were to say that, because heterosexuals are attracted to people of the opposite sex, if a company decided to hire a female employee in a position in which she reported to a male supervisor, we should expect that the manager (if he is heterosexual) will act as a sexual predator, and therefore no companies should hire heterosexuals unless their employees are exclusively male or exclusively female.
Regarding changing the name of a condition to remove the word disorder, I don't see any explanation for why this is wrong. It's not as if the first name given to the condition is somehow scientifically *required.* The "name" of anything is essentially arbitrary: that's why we let parents name their children — because there is no "required" name for a person, thing, or idea. We choose names. Because very few people besides those with a condition have any investment in what it is called, I don't see why considering their views about the name for that condition is wrong.
Everyone is crazy except for thee and me, and i'm wondering about thee.
"And if any of you homos touch my stuff, I'll kill ya." Stripes, the movie.
"gender is “assigned” at birth" Huh?
If it is not mental illness then the only explanation is heroin. Do you what the solution is to getting out of debt? Borrow more.
Sounds criminal? You have no idea folks!

it's not an either or scenario…
Sure there are loving gay families. All 20 of them. Kidding aside, it is a rare occurance. But it does beat orphanages, and we aren't diametrically opposed to them. It's just not an ideal environment. But it can be ok
and as said, are not opposed to it…
We see ideology infecting science, medicine, education, history and even economics. As much as reasonable men have sought to seperate ideology from fact, this has always been the case. But as the progressive movement has gained ground over the last the last 4-5 decades, we see it happening exponentially.
As more adherents of progressivness become embedded in every facet of society, while following a doctrine of 'the end justifies the means', they promote their views and fellow advocates above others.
But the more this plays out, the more transparent it eventually becomes.
there is no ignorance here…
Just wishful thinking on your part. The military, which we are quite familiar with, thank you, is not conducive to any display of sexuality. And, if you open it up to openly gay people you run the risk of having it become a recruiting ground for same sex partners. Nothing you can say will alter that.
Perhaps in time that will ameliorate. But we must, as a society, ask ourselves the question: Why? why so important, and why now?
It is our belief that the very powerful and wealthy homosexual lobby wants this desperately because they see what integration (Colin Powell) did for the African American population. Only problem with that is this is about behaviour-
not the color of a man's skin…
"There is NO room for any display of sexuality in the armed forces." That's a broad statement to make. I know many Dual Mil couples ( Military married to military) Indeed, my husband and I serve and even belong to the same Unit.
Honestly, the problem isn't "any display of sexuality". The problem you have is any display of homosexuality.
Whatever legitimacy psychology had is rapidly degenerating into a well recognized pseudo-science. It was bound to happen, since it has always been difficult to objectively practice and thereby proved easy prey to mush-headed liberals who simply wanted justification for their political ideology. Psychologists have been slowly distancing themselves from their hard-science cousins such as neurology and biology, since most of what they tout simply cannot be reconciled with real evidence based scientific research.
Climatology, notoriously difficult to sort out due to the utter complexity of the science, has suffered a similar fate. These disciplines have quickly filled up with pseudo-scientists more interested in pursuing government grant money and face-time on news networks than discovering truth. The result has been utterly predictable in both cases, where "science" is seen as a means to justify a political end rather than the end itself, i.e. an objective search for truth whatever it may lead.
They are no better than "Ufologists" and necromancers. Come to think of it, I think I have more respect for most ufologists, who seem to be interested more in simply discovering truth than in advancing a political agenda …
Out of ALL the people I know, 2 are a committed and stable homo couple. 1 homo is a relationship trainwreck. That's my 3% right there. Hetero-wise, I know about 3 couples with messed-up marriages, about 2 confirmed bachelors and everyone else is doing OK with their lives.
Invest folks with authority to define values, and voila, they define values. Psychiatrists as well as some other unscrupulous M.D.s, notably those who perform "reassignment surgery," are exploiting a mental illness, and mutilating sick individuals for money. Each cell contains the DNA of the individuals, so that a mutilation of an individual to try to disguise the phenotype to make it compatible with the delusions of the unfortunate mentally ill person, is only accomplishing an at best, superficial change with the building of obviously faux external genitalia seeking to conform them to the delusional fantasies of the ill person.
A well-kept secret is that the exploitive practitioners undoubtedly know that the distressed "patients" will for the most part not have their emotional distress eliminated by the mutilation they perform. A study has shown that most remain discontented and that the suicide rate subsequent to the mutilation, is very high.
The transgressions of doctors are more marked because we project our hopeful expectations on them. Many are sincere and dedicated. Others will not pass up a chance to make a buck regardless of the ethical nature of "the opportunity."
What is particularly distressing is that the cost of the mutilation is being absorbed by some governmental plans, GB for example, and in at least one state, a Judge has ordered an insurer to pay for such mutilation, which transfers the cost for the sadistic procedure to the general public.
But again, what do you expect in a society in which abortion carries no onus, in which the same people who advocate abortion as acceptable are now advocating legislation to enable a post partum infant to be "terminated" at the behest of a parent up to the age of one year, in which euthanasia is a viable option, and generally in which a bizarre "new ethics" accepts death and mutilation as betokening the values of a degenerate and decadent society.
Great article Mr. Shapiro. You have laid out an excellent descriptive argument of what I have felt as a skeptic of in the pseudoscience of Psychology. Your summary states it all for me:
"I do, however, believe strongly in the field of psychology/psychiatry. Only by removing the politics from the field can it retain its legitimacy."
I disagree. I'd rather a child be raised in a well run foster home any day than to subject him or her to the gender confusion that being raised by a homosexual couple cannot help but convey to the child. Your logic assumes that all foster homes are substandard and by their very nature incapable of nurturing children, but that is not true. There are a good many foster and orphanage situations, run by competent and caring people, who have turned out well adjusted citizens.
Note that I am *not* accusing homosexual couples of not being competent or caring. But the relationship is fundamentally flawed in what is perhaps the most foundational aspect of human identity and potential, sexual identity. This confusion cannot help but be passed on to the children they attempt to foster.
Bottom line: There is a REASON nature requires male and female pairing to produce and nurture children. There is a REASON males cannot conceive and bear children, and the cases of natural auto-impregnation by the female of any species is so rare as to make its' untenability obvious. (Where are the Darwinists on this one? The entire philosophical foundation of Darwinism rests on the methodology of "natural selection")
Pedophiles get one freebie!!! Are you kidding me? We don't give murderers a freebie, we don't give bank robbers a freebie, we don't give a rapist a freebie, but someone who destroys a child, well, they get one free pass. Who wrote this, pedophiles? Well, I can tell you this, any pedophile that touches a child or grandchild of mine is not getting any free passes!
Actually, to be closer to the truth using your scenario; it would be no more valid than hiring a female employee in a position where she not only reported to a male manager, but was also required to sleep and shower communally with him. What could possibly go wrong there?
I don't know how I feel about sexuality and the combat zone. If my husband and I were to deploy together, we would not be allowed in each other's living quarters at many bases (mainly an AF rule). On the other hand, there are Army posts that are allowing sex while in a combat zone (so long as the ones having sex are not committing adultery)
According to the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) 925. ART. 125. SODOMY (a) Any person subject to this chapter who engages in unnatural carnal copulation with another person of the same or opposite sex or with an animal is guilty of sodomy. Penetration , however slight, is sufficient to complete the offense.
(b) Any person found guilty of sodomy shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.http://www.military.com/features/0,15240,167950,0...

I guess that would have to change.
I'm uneasy about allowing Homosexuals to serve openly. It carries with it a whole lot of unknowns and is a dangerous social experiment to enact in a war zone. Personally, I feel like the issue may have been raised at the SOTU address to deflect attention away from what really matters to most Americans. You know, give them something else to scream about- something that they have absolutely no control over, let them waste their breath and concern while the rest of the country falls apart.
Dr. Rossiter's book "The Liberal Mind: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness."
Very good point!
The re-writing of the DSM in 1974 was the first attempt to normalize homosexuality. After all, if it no longer a mental disorder, homosexuality is normal, right? Gay marriage is a similar movement designed to normalize homosexuals. After all, if two men or two women can get married, homosexuality must be normal, right? If all of this is normal, then gays can serve in the military and adopt children, right? Wrong. You can re-write the DSM all you like, homosexuality is an aberrant behavior that is not normal. Trying to force everyone to accept homosexuals as normal is not going to work either.__Now the next group that they want to normalize seems like its going to be….transgendered people. After all, if homosexuality is normal, then a man wanting to get is genitals removed HAS to be normal too, right? And if all that is normal, then pedophilles must be normal too, if they only molest one kid. Who writes this drivel?
Re: "Only by removing the politics from the field can it retain its legitimacy." Yes. And that is true of virtually any scientific field. Anyone who can't see what it has done to climate studies is blind. And Ben, you could do a book on what the Frankfurt School has brought us. It was far more a subversive organization than a scientific one, and consciously so.
Inevitably, some will use the military as a "recruiting ground for same sex partners." I know quite a few women who have used it to find a husband and will openly admit that it was their intent.
Why now? To deflect attention away from what really matters to the vast majority of Americans, while at the same time making good on a promise made a year ago.
My worry is that while wars are being fought on two fronts, the President is willing to enact a major Social Change within the Military. Imagine, right now in the Pentagon they are trying to work out the logistics of ending DADT and trying to figure out a way to prepare the current force for the upcoming change. Don't you think that the Military has enough to worry about?
They'll probably try to use the excuse that it's to meet Enlistment #'s but, I don't know if that's true. The military has no problem filling it's quotas. Then again I've read that we are short on linguists and Doctors…
Lighten up, Francis…Loved that movie.
Interesting article. One key issue which is tangentially related is the great scandal of Catholic Church and its priests over the last decade. There were actually two issues. The first was the sexual assault on young boys (mostly) perpetrated by the priests. The second issue was the cover-up by the Church. While I believe the latter was terrible and probably did permanent damage to the bond between the Church and its flock, the fact that there was a collection of men who felt free to prey on young boys was relatively ignored by the press and politicos. They were gleefully bashing the Church for its immoral handling of the scandal, while at the same time they were declaring the priest’ vow of celibacy was, if not a justification, at least a mitigating factor. The message was “the Church is evil and created this scandal,” rather than “the Church is a safe haven for predatory homosexuals.” Just as Ben says, it is politics rather than truth.
I have strong feelings, both directions, on the topic of “rights” for gays.
First, my favorite cousin was gay, and eventually paid the price for his early days of unprotected sex with his life. He received extensive treatment and lived for many years, which was good. (Although some would say they didn’t want their tax money used that way.) His elderly parents defined their final golden years around his illness, which was not so good. When their health was spent, his sister, who had successfully fought breast cancer, had to step in and take over, which was also not so good.
As for gays in the military:
I happen to know, personally, that an appreciable number of gays serve in our military and have for years. In fact, I suspect we would all be astounded just how many there are.
They missed three serious mental disorders:
1. Liberalism (especially the progressive kind)
2. Bush derangement syndrome
3. Palin derangement syndrome
No. Ben's logic is a bit tortured in that paragraph. He seems to forget what it is that he's "dissecting." The DSM is not the Uniform Criminal Code, Ben- you do not get "one freebie" for molesting a child. That remains a crime. What those who compile the DSM are tasked with is providing a set of uniform standards for behavior that is, in many cases, not completely understood- an imperfect task, which is why they have to update the DSM as understanding of mental illness evolves. So in the case of pedophilia, they are not classifying right or wrong behavior- they are, as best they can, based on prevailing research, setting forth standards for diagnosis of the mental disorder of pedophilia so that they can, hopefully, treat it.
there is also the sticky wicket of the UCMJ…
The Uniform Code of Military Justice forbids homosexual contact. That can only be changed by congressional action; an executive order won't cut it. How do you serve 'openly' gay and then not be able to act on your sexual predelictions?
This is not a simple issue…
no, it's not…
It is our belief that married in the same unit is not a good thing, either- just not the slippery slope gay behavior amongst a bunch of 19 year olds. Nor do we approve of females serving in combat or combat support units because of the pregnancy issue, but that ship has, unfortunately, sailed.
There are modern considerations, sadly…
Simple really, it is wrong because with a name change then you have to go back through all legislation and correct the name usage. Until those corrections are made, the lawyers can twist and turn the legal system into making decisions which are detrimental to the nation. This is a typical progressive tactic, similar to their assault on the Constitution, which was written specifically to limit the federal government. Any changes to the Constitution must be made through the Amendment process not by simple Congressional legislation signed by the President.
Same as DADT, you not only have to overturn the current position, you also have to make all relevant changes to the associated law (UCMJ, etc.) The military is held accountable to different standards then civilians, known as the Uniform Code of Military Justice, which can only be changed by Congressional action. So, if the President rescinds DADT without Congressional legislation, he is in violation of the Constitution and the UCMJ and any military member following that recision will be brought up on charges and convicted which is a permanent federal conviction.
All actions have consequences.
Nice try, but Ben has not committed torture, he has however based his writing on actual trial cases within our legal system which look to this "expert" called the DSM, and since the definition has changed, will insist that the child molester not be registered as a pedophile because they only got caught once.
we, too, are aware of the noble service of gays in the military…
And since Alexander and Ceasar, they have been with us. It was glorified in ancient Greece as well. It is not as to whether they serve or not- it is the issue of advocacy. By giving society's imprimatur of approval on 'serving openly' (whatever that REALLY means) you are using the duty of the Armed Forces to socially engineer an outcome for about 6 percent of the population.
Does that seem wise?
4. Progressivism
5. CRIS (Cranial-Rectal Inversion Syndrome)
So what you are saying is the current system seems to work for gays. and the military? I like the current system. Should gays be open and serve? I don't think that is an issue the military should worry about. Should gays be harrassed or kicked out for being gay? I don't think they are subjected to that in the current system.
Tough call on this one, there is a reason we debate this. Tough call. We tend to debate things we are not in agreement on, most other things we all agree on. As americans.
well they already do this. Only not in the "open". And frankly I think that how it should be. We are really just trying to completely normalize being gay. But Im sorry, in the military, being gay does and should be a bit more of a hassle. Being gay is always going to bring some extra baggage with it. We need to tell the gay movement that we don't hate you, hate has nothing to do with it. We are just not stupid and we know being gay is different and not the same as being straight. The military has a very, very specific mission and sorry, providing a place for gays to feel unencumbered is not one of them. Sorry.
There's also Dr. Michael Savage's "Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder".
I believe the generally-accepted term for "Palin derangement syndrome" is actually "Palin Fever".
No he doesn't.
wwhat we are inartfully trying to say is DADT works. Period.
Yes, there ARE good foster homes, and there are a few which are run by complete monsters, and THOSE ruin lives. Similarly, there are homosexual couples which would make GREAT parents, and some which have no business owning pets, let alone having kids in their custody. And I can say the same about hetero couples. My parents dropped the ball, for instance, and I had to get where I am by myself. The point is, let's try and get as many people as we can to adopt these kids and put them into families. Yes, I think a two-parent, heterosexual couple in a stable, committed relationship is BEST for kids, but we should not let perfection stand in the way of improvement where foster kids are concerned.
Well, I'll defer to your expertise since I'm not personally in the military, and I have heard different accounts of male-female interaction and same-sex interaction, and the latter always seems to be more of a problematic issue.
It is past time that the writers of the DSM remove the pejorative terms "mentally ill", "schizophrenic" and "bipolar disorder". These terms stigmatize the reality-challenged in hurtful ways and cause untold emotional distress to persons whose neonatal cognitive assignments are in a minor variant of the spectrum of reality engagedness. These words are used by right wing political reactionaries to marginalize the mentally variant into de facto ghettoes of the mind. It is time to return to the more descriptive terms "whackjob", "screwball" and "Nutsy Fagin".
" the person is distressed or impaired by sexual attraction to children"
See, it's not a problem if your conscience doesn't trouble you!
According to an ancient Book (Which is the number one selling Book world wide every year), Two major historical cities were destroyed because of perversion to natural laws, Archeologists have verified those cities were reduced to rubble, in a short period of time!!! Those whose minds are abscessed with sexual gratification as the sweetest fruit of their life, have no limits on their justification, for their perverted thoughts (If it feels good, do it)!!! If the mind dwells on a subject long enough, the body will lust for it and soon it will become a way of life, controversy will be challenged adamantly, because of the guilt they know they harbor in their souls they must always be defensive!!!!
Now this is well said! Liberalism certainly is a mental disorder. (Isn't there a book out on that written by a well-established psychologist?)
Well, that was a nice try, but you are confusing the concept of "pedophile" with that of "sex offender." In most states in the U.S., including California where I (and Ben) live, sex offenders, or anyone convicted of a sex crime (including child sex crime) must register. If you're convicted of molesting a child, even once, you are a sex offender.
Pedophilia is not a crime. It's "a psychological disorder in which an adult or older adolescent experiences a sexual preference for prepubescent children." Horrifying? Yes. A crime in and of itself? No. No one has to "register as a pedophile." I'm not sure how that would even work- and of course, not all pedophiles are sex criminals.
Not sure what the torture reference is- and I wonder what "actual trial cases" you're referring to. Please educate us.

Some items of interest for you night owls. Big Journalism: The Politically Correct Politics of Mental Health – Rewriting the DSM Again by Ben Shapiro (HT: ECM) The Washington Times: Military lab rats by Oliver North The Des Moines Register: Auditor: St…
Don'tTread: Thanks for such a beautiful illustration as to why politics needs to be kept out of this.
Good article, Mr. Shapiro.
Ben, as a friend and former colleague, I expect better analysis from you. I don't want to distract from this riveting discussion of gays in the military, but I'm happy to do a paragraph-by-paragraph breakdown of why this article doesn't work. I know this is Breitbart, generally not much of a brain trust, but I am used to having to actually THINK about counterarguments to your points, Ben. Didn't have to put so much effort into it this time.
"…allowing gay soldiers…"
I'm sorry, but I need to intercede here.
Could you introduce us to all the homosexual men & women just chafing at the proverbial bit for the opportunity to serve in the US Military? Those poor brave men & women who are more than willing to serve their country…but cannot because of the horrid, evil, monstrous ban on gays in the military?
Are you, LLCS, willing to put your money where your mouth is and place a wager on the sheer size of the mad rush of gays hurrying to enlist at long last once DADT is lifted?
If the overall recruitment levels don't increase by the apocryphal 10% once DADT is lifted, then all this hullabaloo will be proven to be nothing more than self-satisfying social indoctrination and utter bull-cr@p on your part…at the expense of the US Military.
And, sadly, I expect that you won't lose a moment's sleep over it, either.
"The "name" of anything is essentially arbitrary…(SNIP)….Because very few people besides those with a condition have any investment in what it is called, I don't see why considering their views about the name for that condition is wrong."
Nice rationalization, LLCS.
I'll bet the North American Man/Boy Love Association and various pedophiles around the world share such pedantic views as yours.
Well, I do think the involved military members were risking quite a bit to do what they did. I also know the women were afraid of having anyone know about their real situations, because they would both be in trouble. Two of those involved possibly kicked out of the military, maybe arrested for falsifying information. The other deported at least.
As I said, I get conflicted about this topic. Perhaps Don't Ask, Don't Tell is the best of imperfect solutions.
One barometer we can use is: "What do the progressive/liberal/dems want?" That is usually the worst option and most dangerous for this country.
I have never been able to look at a spatula the same way….LOL
Your definitions in your first paragraph demonstrate the equivalent politicizing of that which you assign to "liberals." I think you need to look up the definition of "hypocrisy" and start over.
well put…
It isn't an anti-gay thing. We know, and have served with gays. They were discreet, and did not allow their sexuality to define them. That only seems right. Conversely, we are aginst witch hunts to drive them out of the service when they are adhering to DADT. Which, by the way, works. Well…
When you say "our" and "we" who do you refer to?
It's very difficult for me not to be defensive about your comment concerning dual mil couples. My husband and I are one of two dual mil's in our Unit. And like most things, it entirely depends on the individual couple as to whether it is beneficial or a hindrance to the mission.
Dual Mil Couples often are more devoted to the mission than mil/dependent couples. We have a mutual understanding of the mission. My husband never comes home to a wife that doesn't understand what he has to go through while deployed, working overtime, or preparing for an Exercise. I know a whole lot of men in my shop who constantly have to apologize and explain why they aren't coming home on time.
In my shop alone, I can count six marriages that failed because the wives weren't able to accept the husband's commitment to the mission.
a small, elite group. THAT's who…
we respect your service to this country…
And understand that dual service couples are now a mainstream issue. It is a new, lean, volunteer military.
And women are capable, brave, and a credit to our armed forces. Now that we have that out of the way, your own experiences show the perils this situation can cause to unit readiness, and also to combat effectiveness.
Our experiences were a different era, although not that long ago. To lose an E-5 quartermaster to flu is one thing; to rotate them stateside for pregnancy leave is something else. When Marine Gen Christmas
urged his leathernecks not to marry he was run out of the Corps by Washington bureaucrats. Are we in this business for the defense of this country or because we want day care for married E-3's?
So forgive our grumpinsess on the matter. All change is not necessarily for the better…
First off, I apologize for my horrendous grammar. I should have said "to whom do you refer". Please, accept my humble apology. after all, I am the product of a public education.
Secondly, LOL… we call those small, elite groups "secret squirrels".
good point. That would make them the perfect reverse barometers…
also excellent points…
not to pick on the unfortunate LLCS; their post seems to be harmless enough, if a bit clueless. There is no great rush for gays to serve; they can if they want- just keep your desires to yourself. Gays account for less than ten percent of the population- if you scale that down to those who would want a career in the service you are talking of maybe a few thousand servicepeople.
And we need to change the DADT for that?
yes, and we have secret nuts stashed as well…
Acorns?
Your grumpiness is accepted whole heartedly.
If, indeed, the fighting men in the military were to serve without their dependents…well, dependence- it would free them up to completely dedicate their mental capacities to the fight. However, as you stated, times have changed.
I wouldn't give up the experiences I have had in the military for a million dollars- and I'm being honest. I'm glad I was able to serve and I'm thrilled with my decision to separate. It seems that when priorities change (my children) than one must make the difficult choice and sacrifice.
One of the main problems I see is many in the military won't accept that their priorities have changed They want to continue with the lifestyle and the guaranteed paycheck but have thrown in the towel as far as dedication to the mission. I believe this is a major problem.
no, Barry has all of those. We do have a Brazil nut around somewhere…
there is now an atmosphere of entitlement in the military as well. You reap what you sow. And affirmative action has it's drawbacks. When Charlie Rangel threw out the supposed 'overrepresentation' of blacks in combat arms the facts showed if anything they were slightly underrepresented- too many black females in non combat roles it turns out. No problem with that; somebody has to deal with the bureaucracy of military service.
Point is: service is just THAT. trying to make it like civilian pursuits seems dangerously counterproductive, not to mention hideously expensive.
Anyway, welcome to the civilian world. Much success to you. We like the money here…
"Making the perfect the enemy of the good" is a good benchmark for what to avoid. I just wish it weren't used so often to justify settling for something profoundly unsatisfactory.

"The Army is not a sociological laboratory; to be effective it must be organized and trained according to the principles which will insure success. Experiments to meet the wishes and demands of the champions of every race and creed for the solution of their problems are a danger to efficiency, discipline and morale and would result in ultimate defeat."
– Col. Eugene R. Householder, addressing a gathering of Negro Editors and Publishers the day after Pearl Harbor, to tell them that the Army couldn't Integrate now.
Yes, few armies are as hidebound with old world ways as the Israeli Defence Force. In existence since 1948, ages ago. That's far older than the US, isn't it?
The USA is *different*. Ask yourself, is it more like the UK, Australia, or Canada – which allow gays and transsexuals to serve – or is it more like Russia or North Korea – which don't?
NATO armed forces that allow gays to serve are indeed tiny. I mean. apart from the 683,000 in Germany, the 779,000 in France, the 590,000 in the UK, 534,000 in Italy, 579,000 in Spain, 472,000 in Greece – OK, that's more than the total US Armed forces, Marines included so far- 112,000 in Canada, 139,000 in Belgium, 88,000 in the Netherlands….. I mean, NATO is tiny, only 30% or so larger than the US.
"Archeologists have verified those cities were reduced to rubble, in a short period of time!!"
Really? Which archaeologists would these be then? Because last time I heard, the locations hadn't been found. There's evidence that they were 2 of 5 cities in the Jordan Valley, but also evidence they were in Syria or Iraq.
As for their sins – there were many. Here's the one that caused their destruction – at least, according to the Bible.
Now this was the sin of Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.
—Ezekiel 16:49-50
So many people know what's in the Bible that they never bother actually reading it.
I'd put Bush derangement syndrome, Palin derangement syndrome , and Obama derangement syndrome as subsets of the same thing. The symptoms are identical, only the target differs.
Bush I believe will go down in history as one of the better presidents (like Truman), Palin has a great track record as Alaskan governor (even if she's a might too Fundie for my tastes), and Obama's a Chicago Machine Hack, one of the worst Presidents of recent times.
But he's not the Anti-Christ, nor Muslim, nor Kenyan, nor one of the Pod People.
yes, in and of themselves they are tiny, they do little other than pose…
The IDF is a survival force. The rest do very little. We are the arsenal of democracy worldwide. Period. End of story.
As Mark Twain once said: 'There are lies, damn lies, and statistics…
Housholder, a Progressive- and fan of Wilson's Progressive movement spoke of their desire to keep the service segregated. By the way, it was segregated by Woodrow Wilson, a eugenicist, who found black people inferior.
The military- and government service HAD been integrated after the Civil War.
The facts dispute your assertions…

While health is wealth most of our people no good health and it is the reality that they have no wealth to keep health well. To keep good health we also need wealth. Health is wealth? Not always that!
Wow, opinions based on a narrow view of the world. I think you need a lesson in genetics. Being gay has nothing to do with a psychological disorder, and isn't something a little therapy can impact. How about we don't allow anyone with black hair to adopt, as they certainly couldn't be a good parent. In fact, the DSM has mirrored politics as you've stated, but old ignorant ways of thinking are not always the wisest. How about we go back to the days when people were married to form alliances of power and for property ownership, not for love? Sound good? Because that's what the institution of marriage is at origin. Sad that you can't see how our society has progressed and is moving more toward God's true word of love.
Im very happy about this shemale post , I hope you will write me
This is interesting…I’m curious to know what you would suggest in my situation. I think my husband could be having an affair, but I do not have evidence. It’s more of a gut feeling. Do you think I should see about hiring a private investigator? Or should I confront him with my suspicions?
Sexy ladyboy are my passion , can you just post more about this topic?
Interesting read on DSM-5, Mr. Shapiro. As a psychiatrist who has published, taught, and treated patients using topics involving various iterations of the DSM (not one who is particularly paranoid about it, just critical at times), I see many of your points. I hope the DSM-5 senior editors become aware of your blog.
So amazing , why dont you write more about ladyboys!
Tranny posts like this one makes me really happy , I hope for more!
