When I was at CPAC a few weeks ago, I decided to stay an extra day and do the Washington tour. Now as someone who lives in Los Angeles, it is simply shocking to me how much history is within walking distance of the Washington monument, say.
At the Air and Space Museum, you can see John Glenn’s FRIENDSHIP 7 capsule and a replica of the Apollo 11 Lunar Module (you can tell it’s a replica, and not one of the built but unflown actual LMs, because the Lunar Module is so fragile it cannot support itself on its own legs in the Earth’s gravity field.)
Just a few blocks away is Ford’s Theater, and across the street, the Peterson House where Abraham Lincoln spent his final eight hours of agony. To go from that dingy, cheap little flophouse and then to the marble temple at the far end of the Mall produces a profound reaction in the human heart. But nothing I saw affected me as did the Declaration of Independence. I expected to be filled with reverence and awe. Instead, I was overwhelmed with despair.

My friends, the Declaration of Independence is gone: irreparably faded. And I fear that the ideals so boldly pronounced in that document are also fading from the pages of society. A few years ago, they opened the Super Bowl telecast by having players from both teams simply read lines from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, and the switchboards were flooded with thousands of irate calls protesting this “right-wing propaganda.”
And we who work in Hollywood know that the kind of movies this town has churned out for forty years now must certainly bear a heavy responsibly for not only the fading of those ideals, but for the active attempt to erase them as quickly as possible.
But despair and resignation are, in fact, the goals of those would see these imperishable words fade from our lives. We can renew those words, in a very simple and heartfelt way.

One answer is in the video, and simply as one citizen to another, I would encourage you to repeat what I personally did for my own personal benefit. You will feel a thousand times better about yourself and your country, and that sense of optimism and pride is kryptonite to the people who wish her harm.

"A few years ago, they opened the Super Bowl telecast by having players from both teams simply read lines from the preamble of the Declaration of Independence, and the switchboards were flooded with thousands of irate calls protesting this “right-wing propaganda.”"
Painful.
It is time to hit back and hit back hard. We need to purge the schools of reds and gut the Federal, State and Local governments. I do not want to pay for these lazy dangerous Marxists. Green job my fanny. We need to make these pinkos howel.
Our Ideals are written in ink. Our Freedom is written in blood
Yes the constitution is VERY relevant but progressivism is completely irrelevant to its promise.
"The Constitution Can Not Defend Itself".
It needs "We the People".
Death to Tyrants and Corrupt Politicians
Why should the Declaration of Independence be any different from the Constitution?
In another generation, at this rate, both will be distant esoteric memories, valued only by a dwindling few…
FDS
You should put that on your AVATAR…if you don't next week, I may…
Afterburner with Bill Whittle is the best.
If the Globalist apparatchik in the White House has his way, it will be totally irrelevant.
It is relevant and needed more than ever.
It is what stands between us and the Obamas of the world who would try to micro-manage our lives. It is what gives Obama fits. It is what stops him from seizing property right now. It is the thing he hates the most.
It is the only thing that is slowing him down from getting the "regulatory" mechanisms in place to subvert the constitution.
I'm trying to keep this short so sorry if reads choppy.
Seven of us were at Arlington in 1991 for a member of our unit who had fallen in combat. Three of the our group where from the Philippines, two were serving in the Marines and one was Navy, all three were trying to become citizens. After the funeral, we had two days liberty so we all decided to spend it going around the D.C. area. It was embarrassing how much more they knew about the different places than we did.
One of the last stops was to see the Constitution.
People, I really can not describe their reaction.
These three young men, born in a foreign country, volunteered to serve and protect, not their country but ours, willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice, a few months later, one of the Marines did, showed more reverence to our Constitution than I think I have ever seen any American show.
I am honestly embarrassed and angered by many of the people in this country who try so damn hard to dispose of this document, a document in which people from around the world have felt it so important that it should be defended with their own lives even though they were not even citizens of this country.
I'm not ashamed of being an American but I'm sure as hell embarrassed and angered by the media, our government and our entertainment industry who see the Constitution as nothing more than something in their way of "Progress".
Rewriting the Declaration of Independence is a good idea and exercise for all Americans. It should be required for all immigrants seeking citizenship.
It is the ideas and concepts of the documents that are important so I do not despair that the actual documents are fading away. Material things will always decay and rot, even the Lincoln Memorial. Think of it this way, the actual stone tablets on which God wrote the Ten Commandments are long gone, never to be actually viewed by another person. Yet the rules of life depicted on them have lasted many, many centuries. No doubt there have been periods in history when it seemed that even the ideas expressed there had also faded, never to be followed again. But when the words are true and so indicative of how people can achieve real happiness, they always reemerge, sometimes with more power than before.
Yes it is a shame that so many people have drifted from an understanding of what freedom really is. The real shame it is that most have been led to those false conclusions by people that desire more money or power. In the meantime many people will suffer a great deal while figuring out that they have been deceived. But if the words are truly as enlightening and powerful as we believe they are, they will return to the prominence and stature that they deserve.
Thank you sir, for the excellent post.
But mostly for your service and obvious love for 'our' Country…
Makes you want to cry, doesn't it.
I think it's awesome, that one of the fastest tracks to citizenship, is to join our armed forces. It says alot about one who is willing to risk their life, just to become a citizen of this country.
Having travelled extensively throughout the world, including a selection of hell-holes that happen to make the news (and some that don't), I can unequivocally state, there's no place like home. If people only realized just how special our country is and why. The Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution should be required reading in all our schools and be posted in every federal building. It's sad that every politician and federal employee swears an oath to protect and defend the Constitution, but can't tell you what's in it or even what it means. It is the duty of all Americans to ensure these documents remain relevant by making sure all public servants act pursuant to them. Find your voice.

"Compromise", "consensus", "pragmatism" and all those other lovely fluffy bunny feel good words are what got us where we are today. No more. We are Americans, born free, with God given RIGHTS! It is up to us to foment the revival. Learn, live and love our history, get in the face and shout down the delusional, liar, leftist, low-life, unthinking scum who want you to trade away your liberty for some distant "collective" goal of utopia.
Stopping here while it's still forum legal…
In a word: YES!
In a word: YES!
We are totally with you Pal. Thanks.
The Declaration of Independence was authored for times like these.
Beautiful.
Too bad this admin. doesn't understand this.
Part of the deligitimatizing of this great document, is the virulent racist arguement that this sacred instrument of freedom was created by the white oppressor class, and is therefore to be struck down because of its white origins.
This ugly cancer seeks to destroy this universal proclaimation, proclaimed TO ALL MEN, AND FOR ALL TIMES our eternal cry for liberty, as we have demonstrated and displayed and practiced these ideals before all the world, as the most successful governance of the most prosperous, innovative and creative country in the history of mankind. And here in America, these great gifts of being free, of being personally responsible to ourselves, and having the right to be personally involved in the governance of our country, these rights are equally shared by every man, of every color, and every creed, without exception. We can be truly proud of this sacred document. And we can be forever proud of those great men who had the courage to begin this historically great experiment in democracy.

Our Constitution is one of the great achievements of human civilization. The concept that our rights come from God, and not from a King, or a president, or a government, or a point of a gun, was truly revolutionary. It means those rights are universal, eternal, and can therefore never be taken away. Ever. Our Constitution is not negotiable.
The Statists want to "kill" God so they can invalidate the constitution, which they see as nonsense, so they can declare that rights come from the state.

I stopped my car 20 feet from a Bald Eagle feasting on carrion on the side of the road. He stayed a few moments and then took flight circling away only to return. America shall also return to the things she values Truth, Honor, Charector and Liberty. These are the things that feed her and sustain her. Those who stand in her way should fear her talons
Awesome video.
One of my favorite movies is 1776. Superb performances all around.
Incredible work on this Bill. Very powerful and moving!
Declaration of Independence? As Meghan McCain might say "That's just so … old school."
Other than Jay-Z, did anyone attending the CPAC get to do a Situation Room photo shoot at the White House?
Sounds more like obama trying to get his health care bill through !
He's doing the same thing.
Mr Whittle:
We like your idea of flesh being transformed into marble. If anyone is interested in the stories of the very human men who gave birth to this nation, we humbly suggest our book, Signing Their Lives Away: The Fame & Misfortune of the Men Who Signed the Declaration of Independence (Quirk Books, 2009). The book jacket unfolds into a replica of the Declaration—and it's not faded! They pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, but most of them have been forgotten by history. Thanks for a fine video and post.
And we do nothing while that Marxist in the oval office wipes his ass with it. Pathetic, and don't give me that 'We'll show them in November' crap. It may already be too late.
I visited all those places while in the 3rd grade, the year that JFK was killed in Dallas. At that young age, the spirits at each hallowed place were evident creating a lasting impression that was not affected by the daily business going on in or around 18th and 19th century battlefields, inside "Old Ironside", Congress, the White House, Ford's Theater, the townhome where Lincoln died that was a very nice home in its day (certainly not "dirty squalor"), all of the Memorials including Robert E. Lee's property become our national military cemetery, the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Courthouse, and the Treasury Bldg. That year of young enlightenment in Washington DC witnessed the misery motivating Civil Rights Marches, horrible assassinations, and the fear while attending the ceremonial parade where our military elite guards led JFK's casket carriage to his final resting place.
God rest my mother for making sure that we understood and appreciated our American heritage, to pass on our Constitutional Governance to our posterity. For all our nation's progenitors who died for the right to establish and then to preserve our Constitution, we will not forget or abuse their sacrifices.
Truly, the government continues as politicians are abundant. But our government corruption did not transpire overnight. Throughout the 20th Century, Socialists have occasioned "ruling" from the White House since Wilson, FDR after which time buying votes with entitlements would progressively become the norm in BOTH parties evidenced through the Dewey/Rockefeller liberal-socialist with the "neoconservative" perversions of the Republican Party platform.
How relevant is Constitutional Governance to neoconservatives who establish new and imperial bureaucracies that deny the limits of federal powers? When authority abuses limits of power to become authoritarian, the Republic is no more. "Democracy" in its basest form is mob rule instituting group think that denies the UNALIENABLE RIGHTS of humanity. If the majority votes for an Islamic Theocracy, that expresses a version of democracy we face internationally. If the majority votes for a Socialist Statism, since WWII we've allied for convenience with many nations of that identity, as well as having fought domino effect wars that were never won to "halt" the spread of that identity. And during the process of battling Socialism abroad, the socialists within our political arena permeated both major parties.
Constitutional Conservatives do not deride the platform of the Libertarian Party or vilify the domestic economic agenda of Libertarian Republicans. But Neoconservatives do vilify both the Libertarian Republican AND the Constitutional Conservatives, using the same inaccurate and abusive rhetoric and tactics as the Alinsky Socialist Democratic Party uses to vilify any political opponent. Irony, by attempting Alinsky mannerism to hide corruption, the neoconservative exposes their whitened sepulcher covering up filth.
Constitutional Conservatives must overwhelm rather than remain ignorantly impotent in the neoconservative progressive (socialist) Republican Party. Identify and distinguish between what is Constitutional and what has crossed the line to enable the Socialism that bankrupts our nation's economy and bankrupts the supremacy of the Constitution in practice. Wittingly or not, actively or passively, we all take a stand making the difference one way or the other.
It may be.
Remember the line that is/was crossed – if they cross it – that it will be the end of them, this is not 1776 we know where they live, eat and play, and where there kids go to college an who their "friends" are. We are 8 months to a peaceful revolution – the ballot box – I'm confident we will get just enough of those that understand the gravity of the situation and begin to put Obama back in his ideological box in some college classroom.
On March Twenty Ninth, in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand and Ten, I will become the proud Grandfather of my first grandson. I have come to understand one of the most important yet subtle acts a person can do on behalf of a child is to read to them regularly. I have made a promise to myself, my grandson and my family that I will do just that. And one of the many readings will include the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution as well as the Bible.
Regardless of the expressed opinions of some, the ideals and principles found in these hold the moral foundation of any peoples which will insure survival. I have always held on to the saying one should listen to the message, not the messenger. As a father and future grandfather, I believe it imperative that I do everything within my power to fight for their future in a country unlike any other in the world. We will not go silent into the night.
I get this nagging feeling that the fix is already in. Lindsay's already working again on Immigration (AMNISTY) reform. The Statists are going for broke.
It is because of people of your conviction, mine as well, that will never allow the founding princiles die. Let's hope that we turn things around in Nov. instead of a replay of 1861.
The Declaration (and Constitution) are relevant only for Americans. It is incumbent for those others to fit into this America.
I teach a homeschool class to 11-13 yr olds who are challenged to memorize the Declaration of Independence, minus the grievances. Of the eight on class, 4 opted to memorize it. We are now studying the Constitution. The only way to improve our country is to begin re-teaching our children, starting at home.
It can be done. I do it every day. Fixing what public ed screwed up.
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the FUTURE, nor nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." – Romans 8: 38
I've read the Book, 'deak', the "Good Guys" win…
It's getting close to the time for violent revolution. We The People need to take back OUR country. It's OUR country, not the property of Obama and the Congress.
Last year on the 4th of July, in the Rose Bowl (Pasadena CA) our Congressmen read the Declaration of Independence. The got a rousing ovation afterwords – and this was in California! Let the libitards get ticked off! They deserve everything that is happening to their failing party and President.
I recently had the privilege of visiting our nation's capital. My employer gives us off for Jewish holidays, so on Yom Kippur 2009, I found myself with a Monday off that most people do not have. Living about 2 hours from D.C., I figured it a perfect opportunity to take in the sights with my son without having to deal with weekend crowds. Only downside was that the Holocaust Museum was closed on that day (of course).
I was somewhat distressed by the post-9/11 layout of the city – concrete barriers are *everywhere* now. Just sucks to have to resort to that, however understandable it is. I got over it.
We took in the Air & Space museum. It was predictably amazing, but one thing my 13 year old son found interesting was the sheer about of "non-American" stuff in there – and he was right. I think he was puzzled as to why he could lay his hands on a real-live German BF109 or Japanese Zero, as they were our enemies. Made me think – how many other countries would be comfortable enough in their own skin to prominently display "foreign" artifacts alongside their own – especially those of enemies? How many V-1/V-2 rockets are on public display in, um, *Germany* we wondered – a country where there are laws that – in my point of view – encourage them to forget their own history. Fantastic time.
The latter part of our day was spent in and around the Capitol Building. We had pre-arranged the regular tour (online, the week before), but ended up with two "Gallery" passes, also (apparently I inadvertently chose to light the cigarette of the right random stranger while in line outside – she returned the kindness with the passes, quite unexpectedly). Congress was not in session that day – we figured our foray into the Congressional Gallery would be boring. Just to *see* it though was awe inspiring. My boy did notice a real similarity in layout to the Saturday Night Live studio at Rockefeller Center in NYC (we had visited there some months before) – and he was right. I'm sure there is a joke in that revelation, somewhere.
One thing that really had an impact upon me, however – was in the Capitol Rotunda (?). There are a variety of historical – mostly Presidential – statues throughout the building. In this main area, though, they had Ronald Wilson Reagan's bronze statue on display. I intended to get a picture of my boy next to it, but had a hard to getting access to it – I was actually a bit annoyed, at first. You see, there was a seemingly endless stream of people drawn to that statue to touch it or have pictures next to it. Once I *stopped* and *listened*, I came to realize that they were almost *all* (apparently) from Eastern Europe – i.e. Poland and whatnot. *THEY IDOLIZED THAT MAN*. And for good reason – he was a champion of freedom – a beacon to those who were fighting for it throughout the world. That episode did more to illustrate to my son what a great man and President RWR was than all the factoids from dad ever could. You seriously should have seen the gleam in the eyes of these people as they stood proudly by that statue. Simply amazing.
Great town…go visit. The boy and I found an awesome Thai restaurant called ThaiTanic. Try it.
Enjoyed your anecdote. A congressman from North Carolina proposed putting Reagan on the $50 bill…
…but, of course, the Left opposes. I say skip changing the money – put Ronald Wilson Reagan on Mount Rushmore.
Tragic! You are taking away from the time that should be spent talking about that disease-infested villain Columbus, how to put a condom on a banana, and Heather's Two Mommies!
No one will find respite until they learn that Politics must run on money – no one in this day and age is allowed media access without paying thru the nose for it — and the bankers OWN the Media. Who are the bankers? They are THE FED — by now, I would think MOST people get it that you must follow the cash. And, it's not that hard to find out who controls what. Two things have to happen for a small group to take control. They are:
1) take control of the media
2) take control of the money supply
THE FED has done both. This occurred way back in the early 1900's thanks to Woodrow Wilson

OK, I am laughing and have no idea how to respond. HAHAHAHA!!! To bad I can't share it with my class, maybe their parents….
And nagging their parents to buy the "correct" products to "Save Teh Planet", and how they have the right to free medical care. They also make a lot of videos…
My point being – who else do you think actually NEEDS to see the Declaration of Independence nullified?
The Banking Cartel, run by the Rockefellers, the JP Morgans and the Warburgs, here in this Country.
No one is allowed to run for political office unless they clear the screenings done by these banking Families.
Conspiracy? Think about it…. One person may run and win, with good intentions. But, suddenly you see them disappear for a few months and when they come back out, suddenly they behave like puppets – reading teleprompters. Sound familiar.?
Dear Leauxryda,
Congratulations and joy on the coming arrival of this new American. Please watch the video on this sight:http://www.fluoridealert.org/. Perhaps, we can make common sense common again.
Is the Declaration of Independence still relevant??!!! Is your freedom relevant? Don't need to ask yourself any other question. What in the world has happened to this country??!!! We're willing to send our sons, brothers, fathers, daughters,…etc. off to die in some God forsaken country and anyone can sit there and question to relevance of the D of I, the Bill of Rights, or the Constitution??!!!! Would you prefer Stalin's Russia? Hitler's Germany? Maybe Mao's China?? If you have any desire to think for yourself and live like men and women YOU HAD BETTER CARE ABOUT what founded this nation!!!! Otherwise, pack your bags and move out!!!!! We've got enough useless souls here already!!!
When John Adams first proposed the idea of "public schooling", it was specifically intended to teach the very principles of this document and the Constitution to the generations to come. Alex de Toquville noted some thirty years later, that while one should never ask an American about European history and governments (boastful ignorance would likely greet you), he was stunned by how even the lowliest of American society could speak with remarkable intelligence and understanding of their own history and the Constitution.
Then along came Woodrow Wilson, who declared one should only study the Declaration of Independence if you ignored the preamble. FDR proclaimed the U.S. needed a "Second Bill of Rights"–a perversion of the first.
I think we're seeing the truth in the old saying, "History is written by the victors." We didn't really know it, but the Progressives declared war on this country about 100 years ago.
And they are winning . . .
Congratulations, and good luck. I'm sure your grandson will be in good hands.
I wasn't aware that had happened. I remember the Super Bowl in question, but I didn't hear about the uproar over it, and I'm absolutely disgusted. My spirit is over in the corner throwing up right now. There is something terribly, terribly wrong with the people in this country if the Declaration of Independence is considered "right-wing propoganda."
… and our future is written in the sand.
Yes, & we need a second Declaration of independence, to free us from the tyranny from within. This tyranny is by our own to our own.
Thank you all for your kind words and support. I, like many other Americans feel we need each other to support the principals bestowed upon us in these valuable documents and to never give up on them either. Our united efforts will be a long and arduous one.

LOL Whittle got to me and perhaps I waxed poetic. But Franklins description of the Eagle not withstanding." He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly. You may have seen him perched on some dead Tree near the River, where, too lazy to fish for himself, he watches the Labour of the Fishing Hawk; and when that diligent Bird has at length taken a Fish, and is bearing it to his Nest for the Support of his Mate and young Ones, the Bald Eagle pursues him and takes it from him." When looking for signs I would never interpret Obama as a Bald Eagle more a pigeon, Watch the way he works his telepromters same head move. Then again looking at Frankilins qoute HMMMMM
"I'm confident we will get just enough of those that understand the gravity of the situation and begin to put Obama back in his ideological box…"
I don't share your confidence. My quote about Washington was not a call to arms or violence, it will likely never come to that. My point is that we need to aggressively get in their faces and win the argument on the merits (the merits clearly favor us). I'm just tired of the softy get along types who don't understand what is actually at stake here. "Compromise" is the slow sale of core values at below clearance pricing.

Yes, it is.
The Constitution is the Law. The Declaration of Independence is a a mission statement, and a damn fine one at that! A mission from God, by the way…
God Bless You, Bill, it's a great idea you've got here! Brilliant.
I recall my amazement at seeing the Declaration published in The New York Times back on July 4th. Amazement at the fact that the NYT would let such sentiments appear in their pages, but also, and most important, HOW MANY OF THESE GRIEVANCES AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT STILL OBTAIN! These several states are under occupation by a monstrous, usurping government. With these words written on our hearts, we, and Liberty, cannot fail.

Lincoln's: We are not enemies, but friends. Did we miss that part of the video? A country divided will fall from hatred of others and false pride. We Americans should not breakdown the very freedoms for which our forefathers fought. Hatred and pride will kill our country. Our country was built on seeking freedom and there are all too many ready to take freedoms away from others. Peaceful demonstrations I'm for, but some of the comments I've read here obviously ignored the beginning of the video and the hatred of those in office is not what America is about.
The politico's who occupy Washington DC and have openly and purposely wrecked our Republic by out of control spending, socialist ideals, continuing lies and empty morals will soon experience a revolt of the American people. The tipping point approaches.
