At least the latest Glenn Beck cover story wasn’t as bad as that Time Magazine hit piece from last year.
USA Weekend, the magazine supplement that comes with many Sunday newspapers, ran a front-page story on the Fox News dynamo over the weekend.
“Ten Things You Never Thought You’d Hear From Glenn Beck” is a mostly sympathetic portrait of the garrulous talker. Such profiles typically are, but even a soft-focused feature can’t help but reveal the inherent biases in today’s mainstream press.
USA Weekend isn’t an ideologically driven publication, at least not like Time or Newsweek. All you need to know about the aforementioned Time story can be found in its title — “Mad Man: Is Glenn Beck Bad for America?”
Nevertheless, the USA Weekend article still treated Beck, and indirectly his audience, as people of whom you expect the worst. The story’s headline, “Don’t Judge Beck By His Cover,” hints at what’s to come.
Writer Dennis McCafferty front-loads his story with sour quotes from Syracuse University’s pop culture guru, Robert Thompson, who observes;
He’ll take a position solely to push people’s buttons. He’s not interested in nuanced, rationale debate.
Beck is on the radio for three hours a day and one hour on Fox News, and much of that time is spent meticulously detailing his views on politics. He uses a chalkboard on television to break down his arguments, for crying out loud.
Remember, this is a positive take on Beck’s current career.
Next, the author starts describing his time with the talk show host:
Beck surprises you in person as an approachable and fun-to-hang-out-with kinda guy.
Anyone who’s watched Beck on TV or heard his radio show knows humor is an integral part of his act, as is a serious case of self-deprecation. So why wouldn’t he be a blast to meet? But McCafferty is just warming up.
Over the course of a pleasant (really!) conversation with USA Weekend Magazine, Beck … comes across as, well, fairly human – and eager to reveal these 10 things we be you didn’t know about him.
Wow. So one of the most popular broadcasters in media today is “fairly human,” much to the author’s shock. Hard to believe someone who holds conservative values can also be “fairly human.” Good thing the author included the “fairly” modifier.
The USA Weekend article is mostly straightforward, letting Beck promote himself and his ability to befriend — gasp — liberals.
But it’s hard to imagine a liberal talker having to suffer the slings and arrows sent Beck’s way before getting to his softer side.

Having met Beck just minutes before he went on stage at CPAC (I was the one sitting on stage to Beck's far right), I can attest that he's a likeable guy. He was cheery and upbeat… and generally pretty nice.

Ya know! I really couldn't care less if he has, is or is still 'beating his wife'. Having seen her in an interview with him I highly doubt it would fly. It's the message, stupid! As long as his show keeps shining light on what's really wrong, how it's wrong and the history and facts to back up his message; his faith, past, present, family, driving record and all the rest is irrelevant to me.
In todays campaign of mis information and propaganda that's staggering to watch; the bigger the target placed on you is in direct correlation to the truth you tell. There must be alot of truth in his message cause he's the biggest target out there.

Let Beck get his message more refined like Limbaugh has on the radio. Limbaugh has had over 20 years experience at it now. He would never admit it but I'll bet there are some things he would do different if he had to do it again. Remember, TV didn't work out so well for Limbaugh even though his message on TV was the same as the radio. I think Beck is just now starting to hit his stride. The history and facts Beck has brought out about progressivism, (or liberalism depending on the day), and how it got to where it is today has been no less than brilliant. I needed to know all that and I didn't see or hear anybody else doing it. It is going to take all the conservative media people we have and all of us to right this ship.

Actually Limbaugh did quite well on TV. Also it was in the last days of traditional "3 network" domination. NBC had the Tonight Show and ABC had Nightline, that left CBS or Independents for Rush. His program 'outpreformed normal choices… MASH or Newhart or might pull a 4 or 5 rating following the 11:30/10:30 news or a 2 or 3 30 minutes later while Rush might pull a 5 at 10:30/11:30 and a 4 at 12 or 11. Rush then Mash would give you a 5 and then a 3 or 2 rating. Run MASH and then Rush and you get a 5 followed by a 4. Delay Rush another 30 minutes and his show might drop to a 3.
Additionally some station managers hated being told they had to carry the show and pushed his show even later..
I was in the industry at the time and saw this at my station and in other markets as well.
If his show was running now he'd be pulling 3 to 5 ratings depending on the market and that means he would be up delivering some prime time network programs…

The whole reason that the left has become so bold is simple – they believe that they have reached the tipping point where they can actually dominate with their power and control grabs. Notice I said that they believe – I'm not saying that it is true.
Certainly America has drifted from it's moorings, been lulled to sleep, been having a party – use what ever euphemism you like, we have only just realized that we are away from the dock, just woken up, or just beginning to feel the aftermath of the party. We've come to our senses but that in and of itself is not enough, it's going to take a lot of time, effort and persistence to correct the course.
Beck has played and is playing a very instrumental part in correcting the course, but he is not alone, anymore. The left needs someone to smack down with their alinsky tactics as they think that this will silence others – - and it used to work, but not any more. Anything that a conservative has or has not done in the past does not change the fact that Obama is a colossal liar and that we now know that we cannot trust anything he says.
While we need to find people of integrity to move into our government, it will not be an easy job for them. They will no doubt come under fire from all sides as well as they won't be able to restore America in short order, but I think that they will be able to make strides in the right direction.

Funny thing is, we don't turn into his program everyday to see the commercials. I didn't even notice that sponsors had changed. Who cares? He's on the air and getting well deserved HIGH ratings. As I recall, the higher the ratings, the more you can charge for advertising during the program. Maybe the old sponsors couldn't afford to run commercials during Beck since his ratings are sky high! Just a thought you might want to ponder…….

Love him or not — Beck has added to the voices prompting more American awareness and dialogue about Obama and minions. That is a good thing for our country — that had once again become a sleeping giant.
When asked why he employs the theatrics, he has explained it as attracting viewers for that time slot. When he goes serious, Palin interview for example, he gets critiqued for that as well. He has evolved over the last year and I am sure he will continue over the next.

It just left a bad taste in my mouth. I guess I wanted some contrition. I wanted the Republicans to say "Hey, we screwed up but we we're gonna do better now". And then I wanted that Reagan moment. That great point of leadership and inspiration. And it just wasn't happening. But then Beck took the stage. Now, I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a Reagan moment. But it rinsed the bad taste out of my mouth.

One of the other things which was pretty obvious in today's show was that the USA Today piece had him dead wrong on global warming. Seems like he went out of his way to debunk the idea that he's a believer in that crap.

I don't doubt at all the rating marks that that you say RL had. I meant it was not his thing. I don't think he was resonating with people as well on TV as he did on the radio. Of course he was one of the first people that seemed to give voice to the "silent majority" at a time when they needed his voice but were not inspired enough to get off their butts and do something like now. This was when Gingrich was formulating the Contract with America and from a fiscal sense, the ship was righted a bit. You could actually trust the GOP to ACT like conservatives. Well, I've been following it. There is a site called "Friends of Science" run by actual climatologists, who have pretty much disproven this whole hoax. I liked the beginning of his speech on CPAC, where he mentioned having the highest admiration for Rush, both those men are driven, self driven, Beck said he was the first one in his family to go to college and went for one semester, if I am not mistaken, Rush said he also went about the same amount of time too.
Beck knows what he is doing, more power to him.

See, I think Beck does it on purpose. If the left attacks his antics they're not focusing on the message as much- but we are. Beck is never going to appeal to hard-core leftists. They're not even going to try to listen to him. So he gives them the dog and pony show and they write articles and call him a goofball. Meanwhile he gets the message through to those who matter; who then in turn start saying wait a minute, who exactly is this Van Jones guy?. Then those people start writing letters and raising a ruckus and before you know it, good things happen like Van Jones has to scurry out of the White House before things get really ugly.
