The Miami Herald has suspended its program that encouraged readers to voluntarily make donations to read its on-line content, as opposed to having a hard subscription price.
If you value The Miami Herald’s local news reporting and investigations, but prefer the convenience of the Internet, please consider a voluntary payment for the web news that matters to you,” the now-defunct donation page read.
One could, if one were so predisposed, consider this a wonderful milestone for the Herald. Perhaps, we shall assume in this vein, the Herald has achieved such a state of financial self-sufficiency that online subscriptions — begged for or otherwise — are no longer needed for the financial integrity of the paper.

Our first clue comes from early reactions to the program shortly after its launch: ”They’ve also provoked an array of reactions, here and across the country, since this has drawn attention as the first effort of its kind.” An “array” – a collection, joined perhaps merely by the fact at whom they were directed.
One can feel the “array” in its full glory: ”Are you clowns serious?” ”Here’s two cents.” ”Here’s my nickel.” ”I just got done reading your rag. I’ll be sending an invoice shortly.” The ending of the program was likewise marked by weasel words. Wrote editor Anders Gyllenhaal:
The project taught us a lot about online reactions, but it’s unlikely to be an important part of our approach going forward. We thank the many readers who sent in contributions, suggestions and ideas as a part of this project.
I am certain that the online reactions were instructive. I am equally certain that the suggestions and ideas, if acted upon, included some which may be considered illegal in most developed countries.
When a newspaper stops a revenue source, it is safe to assume that the cost of the revenue exceeded all other measures.

One more step towards the too-often-delayed demise of another member of the Old Media.

I guess they didn't understand that on the Internet, information is free, and easily found elsewhere.
Why pay for drivel anyway?
I friggin love it, watching the Lame Stream Media commit financial suicide, in broadcast, print, and online.
They are literally destroying their balance sheets along with their credibility, all in order to serve their precious progressive ideology.
Some free advice for the Herald: start covering the ACORN scandal, the global warming fraud and give the tea party people a fair shake. Those three items alone should send your circulation and credibility in an upward direction quickly.
Here's an idea – create an edition made entirely of small, perforated squares, on a slightly softer paper. Hey, sell them rolled up on cardboard cylinders! That'll save some room on the shelves!
Now THAT is something I would pay for.
Ya know! If they were on the right side of investigative reporting and drinking left wing coolaid, maybe their balance sheet would offer them hope. But no, they just cannot detach themselves from the left wing. After all once the admin starts dictating what will be written any old highschool grad who has a slight ability with vocab will be able to write for the newspaper. All the alledged journalist will be driving a danm cab with me. Wondering if this is the nite we get shot over 20 bucks.
Progressive bring this on themselves. They are parasites and "hook up" to a healthy host until it dies……

The Herald could propably recoup their losses, and possibly even make money, If they closed the paper down and sold the building and land to developers. Even in this real estate market they would get a pretty penny for all those new ocean front condos.
If you value The Miami Herald’s local news reporting and investigations, …
Well, I think we all know the answer to that question now.
Dear Miami Herald,
Maybe if you were more of a Fourth Estate instead of a Fifth Column, the public would pay for your publication.
Who would pay to read 'Prava' when you can listen to 'Voice of America' for free.
I'd pay for the 'Photos of our dear leader edition'.
Are you one of the people that thinks their news comes from Talk radio or Drudge? All they do is take stories from the OLD media. AP, times ext. ass.
Nope. I usually use the conservative sites, google news, etc, and use them as a starting point to discover the truth behind the story.
The MSM, and it's subsidiaries, is useless for anything but this or that blew up, or this or that person was hurt/killed.
It doesn't get much worse than the Miami Herald, unless you compare that with the NYT.
The progressive* media are so locked in to their Socialist ideals they cannot even see the perfect example of success past their snooty noses, Fox News.
They must hate THEMSELVES. What other answer could there possibly be? Why is it that those who are buried in the depths of their own lies, cynicism and immorality are so willing to go down with the ship? Any REAL businessman would immediately jump on the conservative band-wagon.
*progressive: I am elite and smart, you are stupid, therefore I will be your master

Messed up on 'Pravda'. My left hand is sore from punching my heavy bag. I'm giving it a lot more attention, eversince I taped that picture of Franken on it.
The Star Tibune in Minneapolis is often refered to as 'The Red Star'.
The take-away here is not unlike the airline industry. There, air-fare hikes go nowhere unless ALL the airlines participate. A lone-wolf soon realizes it's a lone wolf. None of these newspapers are plowing ahead with the 'paid-for' model because they know–as we do–that 'news' is freely available, well, for free.
For example, the New York Times had to explain to the it's ignorant readers that massive snow storms in the U.S. were actually "proof" of Global Warming.
What would we do without them ???
The Airline have found a solution to their problem though.
Wait until after you show up at the airport and then charge extra for luggage, pillows and strip searches.
"Drudge, Yahoo, and Google" hey genius. they are aggregators they don't report. in drudges case he just picks stories written by the evil MSN. takes there headline and increase the font.
Perhaps….. if we didn't just parrot Obama and the Democrat line all the time we could win the readers back?.. Perhaps… if we just presented the other side once in awhile?… Perhaps… become a print version of Fox News?…Yeah,.. A more balanced presentation of the news ………………………………………………………Naaaahhhhh..
Great picture. I understand it won the new masthead contest for that sinking rag.
They would rather rather revert to the anti hetro crowd trolling the beaches in the Keys
then extoll a righty view of events. Years of the same journalism schools, lib profs and
kissing each others behinds to stay ahead in the lefty rat race have made them
useless to decide which fork they should take, left or right, when faced with turn right or
career death. Failed newspapers are the minor leagues for future Hufpo bloggers.
And I agree……they still say……………Naaaahhhhh!
.
Yeah, that's a very creative use of his mug.
Naaahhh, just ax for a bailout. Everybody's doin' it…
Obama is going to have to bail out the Big Liberal Media, or his best cheerleaders may find out just how little Obama is doing ro the unemployed.
To Tea..Glory, yup the main stream media could report the news like Drudge, Yahoo, and Google.
But the Main Stream Media is too busy filtering, blocking and explaining the news to actually report it.
Amazingly, the origins and purpose of all this chaos are predicted and accounted for in the best selling, prophetic, political Conspiracy Thriller book, BLACK ROAD 2012, which I bought on amazon, and was a real goose-bumpy, totally absorbing ride: http://tinyurl.com/amazon-BLACK-ROAD-2012
for the first time, literally since i learned to read some 45 yrs ago, i soon will be forgoing my local morning newspaper (subscription expires in a few days). the combination of the ridiculous expense for ever-diminishing content and the pervasive liberal bias has just become unbearable.
the final straw: last week they ran a lead story, front page, above the fold, on the increasing numbers of people receiving food assistance. ok, fine. then to put the obligatory human face on it, proceeded to use a big color photo of a 30-something single mother using food stamps to shop at THE MOST EXPENSIVE RITZY-ASS GROCERY STORE IN TOWN!!!! as taxpayers, my wife & i can't begin to describe what a warm fuzzy feeling we get knowing that while we're shopping at WalMart & the local chains, this b!tch can afford organic arugula on our nickel. that a local newspaper is so F'ING OUT OF TOUCH with their readership, SO F'ING TONE DEAF, that they think this is a sympathetic example to rub our noses in, tells me all i need to know.
the first step of recovery from anything is admitting you have a problem. not…going…to…happen.
And use on a daily basis
Our local rag (before I also dropped my sub after having one sub or another for 40 years) featured some pity party stories such as the one you mentioned. On the health/ no insurance side of things, I was totally frosted by the pregnant moms smoking (in the photos they printed, but ignored in the stories), and the 400-pounders complaining about their inability to pay the greedy doctors and pharmacists to take care of their high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
our paper had a similar story about health care the very next day and my wife said, "Gee, I'm surprised this story isn't illustrated with some woman going to a hoity-toity cosmetic surgery clinic for a boob job!"
btw- one of my dad's favorite news photos of all time is one he saw back in the '60s of an ginormous woman holding a protest sign that read "WE IS STARVING!"
Want a great example as to WHY the Herald is sinking? Take a look at what their "new columnist" wrote about the Tea Party movement. This blogger Reid calls activists tea b@ggers, insults Republicans and basically rewrites everything overdone daily on Kos and Huffington – and she earns a column in the Herald?

Tone deaf Herald editors and publishers deserve what they get – layoffs.
