Air America announced today, with little fanfare, that it is ceasing operations and filing for bankruptcy, citing “tough economic times” as the reason. Quite honestly, I’m shocked that they didn’t blame Bush. Or global warming.
It’s not the economy, stupid.
Talk radio continues to thrive and do exceptionally well – in the conservative market. There is a reason for this, and it has nothing to do with unfairness but everything to do with the free market.

Mainstream media operates as little more than a mouthpiece for the current administration. Every nightly news anchor from Katie Couric to Brian Williams has an acknowledged bias — different from people like Keith Olbermann and Glenn Beck who have admitted biases, whose programming operates not as news, but as op/ed. Newspapers more often than not also have a slant — this according to a Pew Research Center poll:
Seventy-four percent said news organizations tend to favor one side in dealing with political and social issues. Eighteen percent said they deal fairly with all sides.
The accompanying headline for this poll? “Public Trust in US Media Eroding.”
Why is it eroding? Because people aren’t sheep; they recognize the bias. If I want bias I’ll turn on Chris Matthews or Sean Hannity — at least they admit it; “objective” journalists refuse to acknowledge what the public knows anyway and continue to operate under the assumption that they’re delivering the straight story and when they aren’t, no one can tell.
So why would people want to listen to admittedly biased radio programming that is little more than an echo of what they hear on television or read in the paper? Liberal talk on the radio doesn’t perform well because it is not a sequestered to a niche — it’s everywhere in the media universe. Conservative talk radio. on the other hand, performs well because the radio is the only place, besides Fox News that people can go for right-sphere opinions.
Which is why, with the failure of Air America, expect the left to ratchet up its demand for a renewal of the Fairness Doctrine as a way for it to survive on the radio while the right demands nothing similar of the television and newspaper industries — the latter of which is currently requesting public financing or tax credits. NPR gets taxpayer dollars and still slants to the left, as evidenced by their recent “Learn to Speak Tea Bag” video.
Liberal radio performs poorly because its format already dominates other markets. And it will continue to perform poorly until the day comes when the rest of the media is at least balanced, if not fair.

Thank you Dana.
You "get it". A lot of other folks out here in the hinterlands also "get it". Unfortunately, for the rabid left, someone left them out of the equation.
Sort of like a private joke, between fraternity's, or sorority's; either one is included in the inside circle, or they are left out in the cold. Unfortunately, Air America has been left out in the cold, far too long. They have become frostbitten, in this era of Global Warming.
Personally, I believe it was a conspiracy, and it was enacted before Bush and Cheney left office, perpetrated on the listening public by Halliburton.
If you want people to listen say something that interests them, that's probably a bit to high brow for the leftist whiners but I dont think you can dumb it down anymore than that.
If they ran Visa they would give you a reward every time you missed a payment, then claim all the defaults were a vast right wing conspiracy, they really are pathetic.
Y'all just watch this unfold, and remember, you heard it hear first. With the crashing and burning of Err Amerika, we will see a re-doubling of the effort, and fervent cries from the left, to re-instate, re-institute, and revamp the Fairness Doctrine. The calls will be more rabid, and more racous than ever.
The left will be slathering and foaming in a hydrophobic frenzy.
1) The accompanying headline for this poll? “Public Trust in US Media Eroding.”
2) Mainstream media operates as little more than a mouthpiece for the current administration.
If the trust is eroding, and it operates as little more than a propaganda arm…how is it "mainstream"?
I am NOT picking on you, Dana. You are right on the money…but we are using THEIR words to frame the issues. That's a huge error, in my opinion. They are not "progressives", they are regressives. They are not mainstream, if that's the main stream, I don't wish to drink from it. It is diseased and polluted.
They represent less than 15% of American political thought and they represent 85% of the current cultural watering holes.
They don't like most of the rest of America, they maintain a "thin veneer of sneer" at our military and national defense, …they would rather be living in Europe and are here as Timeshare Americans…they reside here, but don't live here in their hearts.
"Spare America" won't play in Peoria…and when you run an anti-capitalist mentality…bankruptcy may be your end zone.
The NYTimes is bleeding red ink…but, their ink has always had quite a bit of red in it. And that's the point…if you bleed red ink, it will find its way to your bottom line.

"Will anyone notice?"
Nope, and that is as it should be. People vote with their dollars, and air whatever had to pay people to carry it's "programming"
Not a good business model. We are indeed fortunate that it didn't live long enough to gain sympathy from the leftest machine who would have made us pay for it, ala NPR, NEA, and PBS.
The idiots outlived their usefulness.
"expect the left to ratchet up its demand for a renewal of the Fairness Doctrine as a way for it to survive on the radio"
A few years ago I would ask why they don't understand how childish the "Fairness Doctrine" looks. Does anyone remember this?
"Harshness of red marks has students seeing purple" By Naomi Aoki, Globe Staff | August 23, 2004
Yes. Let's not blame the teacher for being unable to teach the child. (that would piss off the teachers union) Let's not blame the pupil for not working harder. (that would make Johnny cry) Let's not blame the school for advancing a child too quickly. (that would piss off the parents) Soooooooo.
Let's blame the RED INK! Wouldn't we like to think that this was a parody? A joke?
Since 2004 what has been the success rate for purple ink-corrected test scores? (And people wondered why I had a problem with this back then.) And now that children have had a half decade of purple ink representing the wrath of parents and teachers do they still consider it less evil than red ink?
Purple ink for grading tests. Purple shirts for union members. And now we have a Purple Doctrine for grown-ups and businesses.
I don't know if Naomi Aoki is still at the Boston Globe. But if she is please let her know it's the purple that is scaring me. With all the red ink we are facing in the USA THAT is saying something.
Air America is off the air? If a left wing loon has a radio show and no one listens, do they make a sound? the answer is "Who Cares?"
It's called brainwashing, an old communist thingy.
The conservatives are coming out with the truth often enough to clear the minds of a few.
Google: Obama Interpol
“Public Trust in US Media Eroding.” ?? More like collapsed when 75% say they believe the media is biased.
boy im gonna miss that station
YEY DANA
Air America was on the air…who knew!
This will piss Franken off and he will push the Fairness Doctrine.
Good Lord!
In reality, after all these years, and all this brouhaha, what has Err Amerika really brought US?
Senator Stewart Smalley, Rachel "The Bull" Maddow, and Jaenine Garafalo.
Quite the troika of trepidation.
We get to shot them then??? yes, yes, say yes.
The "Learn to Speak Teabag" video is labeled Mark Fiore.com, not NPR. How is that funded by "left leaning NPR" again?
Air America? Never heard of it…
I can't honestly answer your question regarding that. But for a FACT, that video was on the NPR website about a week or ten days ago. I saw it there myself.
My theory for the failure of liberal talk radio – and it's only a theory – is demographic: Radio appeals generally to a day-time audience, and the only people during the day who can be be distracted by talk radio are those who have jobs that don't require much mental concentration. Blue collar, lower-class, fly-over country jobs, what Sarah Palin would call "Real Americans" in "Real America".
Liberals, on the other hand tend to be more highly educated, and have jobs requiring them to think during the day, and they relax their minds in the evening watching to Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC.
The only people talking about the Fairness doctrine lately are paranoid conservatives. Perhaps it made sense in the 60's when broadcast communications outlets where limited to a hand-full of AM/FM/TV stations. As a ACLU-card carrying, Barney Frank-loving liberal, I'm quite happy to let Rush blow off steam in the middle of the day.
Liberal radio…what a joke. All they do is spout propaganda for Obama and the libs. And the hate they spew….disgusting. Who would want to listen to that hateful, negative crap all day? No wonder they cant succeed.
Yeah, funny how conservative radio shot up when the Fairness Doctrine was obliterated by Raygun and Limpburger's show is given away free to many markets and Faux Noise lost millions but was propped up by Murdock.
But you yahoos keep rewriting history. It's the only way you'll survive.
Wow! For someone who is soooooooo smart, using the "I'm Rubber, You're Glue" tactic shows just how hollow your little whiny rebuttal really is. Go play in traffic, troll who wishes not to be named…
I saw it on the NPR website too. I also read an article about how the NPR ombudsman condemned the video, so I feel sure it was a product associated with NPR.
I don't claim to be smart, just educated.
For what it's worth, I've found G. Gordon Libby far more interesting than anything who was on Air America. He's capable of having real conversations with people who disagree with him. As for whiners, I find them annoying whether they're conservative (Rush) or liberal (Olbermann)
What? No more black inner city Boys and Girls Clubs to rip off? If Franken can't steal from a bunch of black inner city kids, how can he cheat on his taxes?
Or just letting free elections continue. Those really tend to help our side while doing gleeful amounts of damage to yours.
The problem is George Soros forgot to make sure that "Air America" become the FIRST volunteer radio station to practice the "Fairness Doctrine" A sort of…. He said She said ping pong ball tournement of words.
They NEVER EVER prove with their own money that their ideas are what we in America really want. Expect for these unemployed Air Heads to be scrambling around to find some action commitee chairperson like Al Franken to voice their serious concerns about the for profit talk radio's influence on the masses.
If the format was wanted by anyone it would be on air without governments hand in it.
Like all liberals who claim to be for the "little guy" Maddow and Franken really are in it for themselves. Both drew heavy salaries from a tenuous business the "believed" in.
As soon as they saw a better deal come along, they ran from Air America and never looked back. They used Air America as a springboard for their personal gain and careers. Having achieved their goals, they let Air America die.
Liberals will do the same to America. Take it for all it's worth, even if it dies.
Notice how many compassionate liberals in Congress are personally wealthy or became so after taking office?
Or perhaps daytime talk radio is popular with free-thinking self employed entrepreneurs who don't have a corporate boss making them listen to elevator music, or telling them to "get back to work". That's certainly the case in my instance. It's called "multi-tasking". Folks who own their own business can generally listen to radio and chew gum at the same time.
Guest, you really haven't listened to Rush, have you?
Funny though.
WE, are surviving, and prospering, and living quite well, all the while you and your ilk are being relegated to the dustbin of irrelevancy.
Quite the hoot, huh?
BWAAAAHAAAAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Are you saying intelligent, educated people tune in to listen to Olbermann call people names night after night? I don't think so, and his ratings say there aren't many tuning in to listen to his rantings!
Only a small minority want to tune into a radio program to be called stupid, schmucks, less smart, racists, biots, homophobes, sexists, I could go on, but you get the idea!
That's a good point, and I appreciate your raising it. Would you say that self employed entrepreneurs are generally more conservative than liberal?
They must of finally ran out of that school lunch money.
I think Dana Loesch has this wrong. Granted the liberal view is easy to find on television and in the papers, but this isn't what killed Air America. It is all the hate and vitriol that they spewed. I have listened to alot of Conservative radio and you don't hear all of the hate and childish name calling that you do from the libs. Radio is different than tv is the respect that the pictures are gone. Radio listeners don't want to hear an endless stream of emotional, irrational blather.
Goes to show you how hard it is to make it in today's cut throat radio business. Poor management, poor ad sales, and poor broadcasting was bound to catch up with them eventually, right? Some other interesting details that led to their downfall at http://www.businessinsider.com/air-america-is-ban...
I got a theory, you really aint that smart. As evidenced by your theory.
I know 1, yes 1 guy who claims he listens to NPR. He is one of the biggest idiots I have ever known.
This has to be parody, no one can be this stupid, except of course for the msnbc airheads.
Oh, assuming no one can be that stupid is usually a very foolish assumption. Someone always comes along to prove you wrong.
Touche. But he/she is exceptionally stupid.
The conclusion is very, very simple: AIR AMERICA SUCKED. We don't need to analyze it or put it on the couch. MSNBC deserves Rachel Maddow – they are perfect for each other – no one wants to look at her much less listen to her spew her slanted crap and since no one really watches MSNBC its a match made in Heaven. And the people of Minnesota have been out in the cold too long – electing Al Franken to the Senate? His comedy and acting work was mediocre at best, but electing him as a policy maker? We should all examine recall laws in Minnesota.
I put this into my troll translation service and got the following out:
Guest, "Oh, hai. I r teh l33t1st! See how l33t I am? Let me talk more l33t3r than thou, so you will c how l33t I M. O, you are teh stupidzorz. Lollollolol!!!!1!!!
I'll be sure to tell my husband that his day job is beneath him since he is allowed to jack some headphones into a computer and listen to streaming broadcast while he does statistical analysis 'cause that takes absolutely no concentration – statistics and modeling."
The fairness doctrine was government meddling in the right to free speech Ronald Wilson Reagan did what was right and Constitutional. What that did was get the dipsticks out of the way and allow Americans to choose what they wanted to listen to. And, confidentially buster, they still do! I doubt Limbaugh gives his show away, he wouldn't be raking it in if that was the case. And when was the last time you saw the neilsen ratings for Fox News? Over and above every other show on CNN, PMSNBC, ABCCBSNBCNEWSWEEK etcetera.
You should never react without knowing fact.
A significant number of liberals are black and latino. They also listen to urban radio which biases liberal to suit their audience. Many white libs listen to NPR. There was no audience hungry for Air America. Rush exploded all those years ago because he hit all the right notes with an underserved audience — Conservatives.
This sums it up, "if a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
It was up on NPR since November. It went unnoticed until recently.
You got it Dennis. Air America was a bastard cousin to "highbrow" NPR.
As for NPR being biased, anyone who heard Teri Gross antagonize Bill O'Reilly for nearly an hour before he finally had enough and left the set remembers it. When I was a liberal 20-something college student I used to listen to NPR. I liked it. As I got older, paid taxes, and learned about our Constitution (thanks public school!), I realized how much of it was utter feel good crap from elitists who feel only they have their act together, and must rule the rest of us every waking minute to save us from ourselves. I guess these people have existed throughout history….can't they all move to one state, boss each other around, and leave the rest of us the f alone?
I live in the most Democrat county in the state of Florida. There is not a liberal talk show on the radio. Two years ago they had Air America and whenever I turned it on it was Impeach Bush, Cheney is the devil. There was never anything of substance and that is the reason liberal radio fails. In addition to Liberals being a smaller percentage of America and most Democrats hearing their views on the MSM nightly news.
Dana, you are a dangerous nutjob alarmist. Shame Air America's gone.

Liberal radio also tends to be terminally negative- a constant bummer- and ultimately boring as hell. Rush, besides being "Right", is often funny. So too, of course, is Dennis Miller.
Liberal radio fails mostly because it is pretty awful.
Cowboy Logic
I wonder if 'planted' and the other trolls will understand your tongue is in your cheek with your last comment, or will they think you finally woke up?
Dana, aren't you forgetting the 800-pound liberal radio-gorilla that has been slouching in its cage lo these many decades? I speak of NPR (National Pubic Radio) and its affiliates in the major metro areas (NY, Boston, SF, etc.). Ever go to the FM dial any time of the day and listen to one of their programs (Morning Edition, Fresh Air, Talk of the Nation, Diane Rheem (sp.?) Show, etc.). I have no idea what the ratings are for NPR's shows, but my suspicion is that liberal listening audiences, when given a choice, opt to listen to an NPR program over some tiresome wanna-be comics like Al Franken.
joke?
Irondog
Franken will be ok, he has his diaper.
To be honest, I thought Air America was already a piece of history. I guess it shows how insignificant progressive radio really is.
"………………highly educated, and have jobs requiring them to think during the day, and they relax their minds in the evening watching to Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC."

Now that line is great. Relax their minds……..lol, if their minds were any more 'relaxed' they would drain out of their ears.

I believe Rush did give his show away for awhile, an advertising ploy – to introduce him to new markets – it worked.

Both of them have Ugly souls.
[...] Air America Crashes, Burns — Will Anyone Besides Franken And Maddow Notice? [...]
I thought Air America smelled..I'm glad it's gone. I would welcome a station with a liberal point of view as long as they weren't frothing at the mouth. We always need to hear both sides of the story.
As bad as this administration is..the Republican Party and it's members in congress can share the blame..They didn't do much to be proud of when they ran the place…in fact, I believe they opened the door wide for these programs that they're trying to force on us.
We need to guard against both parties..Brown's election was not an endorsement of the right..it was a call for sanity…I would like the party to field better candidates than they have. We had our Pelosi..he was that greasy headed Tom DeLay..don't forget the past.
And..it sounds like the GOP is getting ready to put up 'old meat' with 'old ideas'..surely we can do better than Gingrich, McCain or Huckabee..
Has anyone else noticed the recent spate of advertising–from Smokey the Bear to social programs–paid for by the Ad Council? If that's not a government subsidy for news outlets, I don't know what is.
Good riddance to bad rubbish!
One down, one to go! Now to get rid of National Pagan Radio!
Bummer, Dude. I never heard Air America but I'm sure it would contribute to my righteous anger. The news this week just about has me soiling myself.
I predict the Algore channel will be next. Now that the Senate super majority has been neutered, bail-outs for lib outlets won't happen.
In the arena of competition, liberals will never win. They have to have the fat thumb of socialism on the scales to 'level' the playing field or they eventually sputter to a stop under heavy loads of negativism and without the lubrication of humor..
Once while traveling north on interstate 95f, I hit 'seek' on my radio and somehow ended up on Air America, At first I had no idea what I was hearing; the female announcer was going on and on about how the right was mistreating Tom Daschle . I decided that what I as hearing must be some kind of parody or satire because little of what she said made any real sense and it was funny. After a few minutes of this, my wife pointed out that she thought was were listening to some pretty good satire put together by Rush Limbaugh or somebody like that. It was impossible to really tell at first what we were listening to. Point is Air America was just so far left, so vitrolic, so unorganized and misdirected that the programming made little or no sense to anyone except the far, far left types who belive that Saul Alinsky is a hero, Che tshirts are cool, and that Howard Dean is really sane.

I still can't get passed the fact that a guy who wore a diaper on national television is a US Senator.

A cute little bunny.
Dr Rupp, I believe that Dana had it exactly right and for the reasons you mention. She is a conservative radio talk-show host herself so she is a bit qualified to write on the matter. People are weary of the emotional liberal blather they hear on every other news outlet, why would they want to listen to it 24-7 on radio? Also NPR would crash and burn without public funding.
[...] Air America goes bankrupt (Big Journalism) [...]
the great danger of free speech is that someone will listen. or in Err Amerika's case, they won't…
I take strong exception to "b-i-a-s" used in reference to people working in the old-fashion media. "Bias" implies an honestly carried preference for one thing over another. Old-fashion media folk passed the boundary of "bias" 25 years before Walter Cronkite died. They are outright lying, prevaricating, dissembling, not-creditable, propagandist New Progressive Communist Socialist Democrat Fascists and secretly racist hate-mongers to boot.
Get the picture? The old-fashion media people left "bias" in the dust a long, long time ago.
*GLOAT* and 3 words : "BWHA HA HA"

Let me guess….. you are one of those geniuses who has a great job. Go fu ck yourself you snob @sshole.
Liberals stink at running businesses, that's why the latch on to the government teat and fight like hell to hang on.
Wow! Who saw that coming? I just figured any network with such a broad appeal couldn't fail. I surprised the fraud in chief didn't ponyup a few bailout bucks. Now they only have CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, and NPR. How will they ever get their message out?
It's not all bad news though. It's another shovel ready project. Burrying the memory of Air America should keep a few excavators busy for a while.
I guess that's one less idiotic liberal organization to call us all "Brownshirts" after we all celebrated Scott's win over Martha.
Nobody cares about what these "Air America" people have to say. Their ideas are plain bad. This is what doomed them from the start.
I love you Dana. I wish you were my girlfriend. (Truly, I haven't had a crush this bad since Jr. High.)
Politics aside and just business numbers: Fox News had ratings seven times the ratings of MSNBC on election night. Fox News is poised to make a $700 million profit this year. In what way have they "lost millions"? Limbaugh's show is the most listened to program in radio history. Murdoch has been financially astute in his creation of the network. Remember when Turner created CNN how the skeptics said there was no market for 24 hour news. An innovative idea is an innovative idea, no matter your political opinion. You can argue politics all you want but you cannot possibly argue that Limbaugh's program and the Fox News Channel are not good business ventures. The same could be said for Fox entertainment. What started with only The Simpsons and Married With Children has turned into a financial empire (remember American Idol???). If you state that Fox is losing money and propped up, it is you who are ignoring true facts and rewriting history.
[...] stand me with here upon the terrace as we contemplate the wreckage of Air America. which quietly breathed its last yesterday after bravely struggling against the Rethuglican Smear [...]
You too?
Good riddance!
I've attempted, on a number of occassions, to listen to different shows on Air America and couldn't stomach more than 15 minutes of that drivel.
All we have in this country are liberals and fags….
So let me understand this correctly. Air America's founders, investors, on air talent and management wasted tens of millions on a business plan that provided a service to a target demographic in which they fully knew to not be able to access their service.
I think the reason Air America and liberal media in general are failing is because they can't compete with the truth.
[W]e will see a re-doubling of the effort, and fervent cries from the left, to re-instate, re-institute, and revamp the Fairness Doctrine
That might not be possible after yesterday's Supreme Court ruling. As I understand it, the ruling said Congress shall pass no law restricting the right to free speech. That's the essence of the fairness doctrine.
They may try, and they may pass something, but I don't think it would stand very well in the Roberts' court. They are letting the other two branches know exactly where they stand on the Constitution.
It seems the SCOTUS decision of yesterday might kill any notion of the fairness doctrine. Thank God for GWB and two great conservative justices he put on the bench.
Ignorance. Advertisers knew it was a waste and didn't buy spots. I take it NFL tv spots still sell and nascar still has an audience. NPR and public broadcasting are paid for by tax money. They would also die a natural death if free market decided.
Will Franken or Maddow notice? So far as I've seen, there's no detectible pule in either one of these droolers.
Absolutely right! We need to stop refering to BIG JOURNALISM as main stream. No more PC language, it's time to call these people exactly what they are.
Stop it, JGibson, you're making Ms. Loesch blush!
Franken makes me want to throw up.
WeWeed_Up
If I manage to sleep through the night without nightmares, I will forgive you.
A 'Not for the squeamish' warning would be nice.
If they do reinstate the fairness doctrine in any form, does that mean that NBC contesting ABC's cozy relationship with Obamao that Obamao will be forced to give equal time to Fox News or will there be some explanation as to why the enforcement of such laws is so arbitrary?
These commie fools at Air America are pathetic.
If they think we need to enact the fairness doctrine then why didn’t they try it themselves. Maybe then they would find some listeners because there is a market between Rush and Air America.
But NO
Like congress they prove reaching across the aisle means giving them what they want and that is for conservative thought to shut up and let Lib’s do all the taking.
You concede to them.
Elitists!
I hope the Conservative movement in America together with Capitalism put these Commie Libs into reverse and all the political correctness poison these fools have brought upon US.
That’s a pretty quality article, i was scanning something identical on another web page not too long ago that essentially said the same thing although yours is clearer, plus its great to have some validation on seeing two sources agree.
