I feel as queasy about this flexing of Palinite muscle as I do about the original, disgusting, asinine story. But I also recoil from mob action like this, for the impact it has on fearless free speech and the chilling effect it will have on an already cowed and defensive MSM when covering the truly tough stuff about Palin.

I recall with horror and shame moments when I was a child and joined a group who teased a handicapped kid, or the asperger's kid, or just avoided offering them my friendship. Would that I could turn back the clock… At high school reunions, we talk about how cool these kids really were "Smart in a different way" and there is regret and shame behind it, and I know that most adults grow up to feel the way I do about this.
Then I think about people who have attained adulthood and proudly engage in this sort of thing–angry liberals–who make it the basis of their social lives and pay their bills with it and justify it as a crusade of moral superiority. Sullivan, like others I could name, was a rare example of the liberal hawk — he despised Islamofascism as loudly as anyone else, and was an early supporter of US efforts in Afghanistan — but around 2003 or 2004, when George W. Bush came out in favor of the Defense of Marriage Act, Andy finally decided which side his bread was buttered on.
Muscular foreign policy he supported, economic conservatism he could live with, but social conservatism was a bridge too far. Andy burned that bridge and never looked back.
As I said further up the thread: Sullivan came to prominence some time around the opening of the US's Afghan operation (as I recall) as a rare example of the liberal hawk — socially liberal, but muscular on foreign policy.
Social conservatism proved to be ANATHEMA to him, though; when the GOP started pushing the Defense of Marriage Act, he began distancing himself from them rapidly, and Bush's support for it was the last straw. Many decades ago in the 8th grade I confronted a bully who was taunting a 6th grader during after lunch recess The bully of course began to attack me. Despite the elitism that practically oozes from this sentence, jokers like Sullivan never cease to crack me up. They're always arguing that protest by a large group of people is a valid form of free speech and that it is, indeed a "fearless" way to "speak truth to power," or some such silliness. Yet, when others use the exact same methods to "speak truth to [their] power", it's suddenly chilling and dangerous speech that needs to be shut down.
