Alessandra Stanley, writing for the New York Times, says this on MSNBC’s newest broadcaster, bold my emphasis:
The Rev. Al Sharpton began his new career as an official MSNBC talk show host on Monday by telling viewers not to expect James Brown.
“I’m not going to be a robotic host reading the teleprompter like a robot,” he said. “Nor am I going to come in here and do the James Brown and do the ‘electric slide’ to prove to you that I’m not stiff,” he added, waving his arms in a rough approximation of a dance move. “I’m going to say what I mean and mean what I say.”
And that may be the problem with Mr. Sharpton’s cable news pulpit: what he means to say is in lockstep with every other MSNBC evening program, making the stretch between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. a nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party.
[...]
And in the evening at least, MSNBC is less a news provider than a carousel of liberal opinion — potential conflicts of interest are swept aside in the swirl of excitable guests.
This is in the NYT. Kudos to Stanley for not pulling punches. She mentions the Tawana Brawley and Crown Heights, but seems to think that Eliot Spitzer somehow makes Sharpton’s past OK — and doesn’t mention the most recent of Sharpton’s stunts: Dunbar Village. A family was violated in unimaginable ways, especially a mother and her young son, and Sharpton and the NAACP defended the rapists and called them the “victims.” Outrage rang throughout the blogosphere across both sides of the political aisles.
And this man calls himself a “preacher?”
Not everyone who says to me, “Lord, Lord,” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?” Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”
Let me share one of my favorite hymns with Mr. Sharpton:
I suggest Mr. Sharpton crack open the Bible he so often stands on to bear false witness against his neighbor, incite riots, and exploit the suffering of the poor. This is a man of God? Not even the ladies of “The View” buy this, as they didn’t with the Duke Lacrosse case.
Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
I’ll judge the tree of Sharpton by its fruit, thanks. I don’t mean to get all Ozark Southern Baptist on you, but there are impresarios, charlatans, and ministers. Using the wrong term for the wrong work is an insult to all three.
This latest from the NYT, combined with Scarborough’s angry observation on the state of mainstream media, and I’d say we almost have a trend.

how about a non-stop blab fest full of hot air and blather?
THAT would seem far more fitting a description. In order for anything liberal to have 'value' you would have to understand the concepts of work and earnings. Seeing this is all about the 'guvmint' taking away from someone to give to another- so as to maintain THEIR power base, 'the term 'values' seems hugely inappropriate.
Words have meaning. Something must be EARNED to have 'value'…
Is Al doing the YMCA dance?
MSNBC is now "making the stretch between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. a nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party." That was true LONG before Sharpton. In fact, I think Sharpton's liberal mantra will convert more people a conservative viewpoint than a thousand Gingrich lectures.
Keep on preachin', Al!
"waving his arms in a rough approximation of a dance move"
… while flapping his lips in a rough approximation of hosting a news show.
“I’m going to (attempt to) say what I mean and mean what I (try to) say.”
Let al sharlton be….he is our dinnertime comic entertainment !

Obama much ?
Love the photo.
Halleluiah!
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition.
As far as "Everybody's Talking About Heaven", why yes, they are. Isn't it odd that nobody wants to die?
I find it odd, that a charlatan, who hides behind the twin shells of both a 501 C (3) AND a 501 C(4) can now have a bully pulpit, to continue spreading his message of hate. I don't know what church this charlatan pastors, or preaches at, but I'd never want to walk through the door.
NYT: MSNBC “a Nonstop Lecture on Liberal Values”
THAT'S a backhanded comment if I ever heard one.
He's really a broom and dustpan guy.
Reverend, indeed. My white a$$.
They should kick him off the top of the building.
With all of that flapping and waving, he could be a dirigible…………..
Wait a minute, didn't Schlichter, two posts ago, just say, "And so, the once mighty New York Times keeps spinning around the bowl"?
Then here we have nutter "editor" Loesch giving praise to a NYT column.
" If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results, than *(SIC, good work, Dana) liberals like Blow and the Times staff are certifiable."
So, we can assume that quoting from a NYT article and praising it is equally certifiable? When will Loesch be checking herself in?
Typical predators at the Breitbart cesspool. Utter hypocrites. Cherry picking when it suits their nonsensical needs. Great "journalism".
The lure of watching a circle-jerk of liberalism is quite powerful, but resist we much.
Speaking of James Brown and the Electric Slide http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiTLO2YiJKs&fe...
MSNBC is more like an unending parade of lies. Come to think of it, it's the same thing as "liberal values".
I'm surprised Sharpton hasn't been defrocked by now.
What happens when your entire political philosophy is so discredited that you can’t even make a coherent argument for it any longer?
You blame others.
"It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one." George Washington
What "values"?
Oooooo, what a treat.
Another Eric Boehlert $hit-and-run post.
I was wondering that myself.
Eric, don't be such a baby. She acknowledges the irony of this coming from the NYT. Like she would if you ever got the stones to man up. The point of the piece is about the Rev Al. But of course you would never be brave enough to tell us what you think about a degenerate who has destroyed lives the way he has, would you?
Well, you know, he is a "colored." Aren't we supposed to call them that now that Glenn Beck said it's ok?
He's probably a pedophile, right LadyKrystyna? Did I spell that right? I don't play Dungeons and Dragons, so I'm not really sure.
What you don't seem to understand Helen, is that one article here and there does not indicate a trend. So, one scribbler at the NYT has come to the conclusion that Sharpie is no different from the rest of the gaggle of turkeys at PMSNBC if my read is correct. Where is it wrong for Dana to point this out? It still doesn't mean the NYT is not circling the drain. Why bother making any comment at all unless you are trying to appear relevent.
Ahhh, that's it isn't it? You know your relevancy is quickly evaporating so, you come here for validation. What's that they say, there is no such thing as bad publicity? Guys like Sharpie and Spitzer seem to have figured that out, haven't they? So, in your own feeble way, that's what you are trying to do, isn't it? Rile up the hicks of middle America? Lame, truly lame.
BTW, Eric Boehlert. Isn't he one of the guys that hangs out with Ames? 'Nuff said.
The thing about Sharpton is he's been causing high-profile trouble in New York for 24 years, to the point that even if Ms. Stanley's politics trend liberal (and they do), she's both unwilling to totally abandon any self respect in trying to rehabilitate Al in any way, and knows that her readers in the NYC metro area know about all as well, and would laugh off any effort to try and present him as MSNBC wants — as some sort of respectable spokesperson for liberal African-Americans.
There are lines even The New York Times won't cross to aid their ideological soulmates, and this is one of them. And Alessandra also takes advantage of Sharpton's new show to take the whole network to task, because for a place that revels in its sober liberal wonkish image, having people like Al or before him, Keith Olbermann become the public media faces of your ideology has to be both annoying and humiliating.
Speaking of liberals, and by that I actually mean progressives, this little tidbit today should bring a smile to some and a frown to those who abhor wasteful government. Midas has touched again! http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Solyndra-Shu...
Meh. Jesse decided 15 years ago that the term "People of Color" was OK, well before Beck ever opened his mouth, so you'll have to take the argument up with the Rainbow Coalition.
Is there anything we detest more than authoritarianism? Asked & answered.
Second to authoritarianism are lectures. I confess. I was a crappy student after I got to LA. Going from one of the best public schools in the US north east to one of the best public high schools in LA wasn't what one might think.
Let's paint the picture. It was going from Gunnery Sgt. Hartman in Full Metal Jacket to Ed Rooney in Ferris Bueller.
Didn't really take well to lectures from Ed Rooney types. No wonder they couldn't indoctrinate me. I stopped showing up. Self-taught is second only to homeschooling.
Fail troll is fail.
the NYT said that "MSNBC (is)… a nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party."
talk about the pot calling the kettle, errr, a person of color….
And the NAACP well before that, Dusty. Helen is completely clueless.
It's just that you're so used to marching in lockstep with the "progressive" talking points, having different observations and viewpoints represented here is a concept that's a bit alien to you. We all know how much you insufferable, morally superior beings like to yell "GOTCHA!" and then walk around looking smug. But you ain't got the goods, Boehlert.
another classic example of the left's double standards. conservative media is held to an impossibly pure standard (in this case, built on deliberately twisting the author's intent) while anything & everything goes over on the left. and this d!ckhead has the brass to call ANYONE a 'hypocrite'…
and he really struck a deadly blow when he caught the typo between 'than' & 'then' -ooooooh, woooooow…….
Chester, I have to agree with something you said in a post earlier today: It's true: you're "not terribly bright."
I just finished reading about Dunbar Village, since I was unaware of that until you linked to it here, and my anger about that is still boiling in my mind. Feel free to go Ozark Southern Baptist on us any time, because it reminds me that instead of hating Al Sharpton for his utterly loathsome and despicable behavior, I should be praying for his redemption.
NO ONE with a working brain watches PMSNBC!

THE ANTI LIBERAL ZONE
Wait… MSNBC is still broadcasting?
Weird.
Aren't the Breitbart sites a tool to carry water for the republicans/teaparty? Isnt the Fox News evening lineup a tool to propagate a republican agenda? Isn't The Nation and the Weekly Standard both newspapers that hold political biases? MSNBC's bias cant be news to you. If you only read this site you would think democrats were going to come and get your guns, shut down churches, and tax the rich 100%. In comparison if you only read The Nation you would think all tea-people were racist birther dunces whose agenda is to protect corporate interests. Personally I dont trust anyone with outlandish biases or politicians. Its a shame we dont have more scientists, economists, engineers, or buisness men in government, you know real people who know real things. Instead we have hardline ideologues who toe the line for the fringes of the party. Quit being cheerleaders for politicians, they dont care about your interest unless you cut them a check.
Hey, douchebagger, let me help you with a little reading comprehension. Schlichter said that the NYT was circling the bowl, he never said they were all the way gone. Even though he said that, it does not preclude the writers of said swirling sewer rag from writing truthfully on occasion or the editors here (or elsewhere) from giving credit where it is due.
This may be hard for you to comprehend, but truth is truth no matter who says it. While the New York Times is generally wrong most of the time in its world view, occasionally something smart comes from it. It's rare, but credit should be given if it is due, and this is what Dana feels she is doing. It's sort of like the proverbial, blind squirrel finding a nut every once in awhile. If you pretend that his securing of a nut didn't happen despite having it proven to you, you're merely in denial — and perhaps even certifiable.
It's nice to know, though, that you are a respecter of persons and not a respecter of truth. It's gives us an idea just how shallow and devoid of morals you really are. Perhaps this is why so many organizations on the left see no issue with ACORN's complicit behavior dealing with people who claim to be in the underage sex trade, or with the fraud that is known as Pigford. You're more upset that Dana agrees with a traditionally leftist newspaper than you are about Al Sharpton's evil past.
So frankly, Eric, your moral outrage isn't worth all that much.
Oh bulls**it. Stanley is just trying to distance her paper from MSNBC by pretending the NYT is any different from MSNBC in it's blatant, dishonest bias.
Sharpton's bizarre and ungovernable behavior has showcased MSNBC's bias to the public, and other liberal media outlets want to distance themsleves from the outed network.
I notice Stanly went ahead and promoted the liberal media stance that Fox News is biased, calling MSNBC's outrageous bias "the counterpoint" to Fox News.
She criticizes MSNBC's hit squad panels, but never admits that FOX News does the opposite – has intelligent, articulate liberal and Democrat guests and lets them speak.
Stanley's piece was nothing but a craven example of rats deserting their ideological colleagues' sinking ship. I'm sure we will more of it.
@pilgrim –
Stanley should have written "the stench between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m." But she's a big, fat, hypocritical liar too, so she did not.
@Handsome –
Sorry, but the stakes are too high. However, I'm sure Bill Clinton feels your pain.
You're absolutely right. As a conservative I'll let just about anything fool thing fly out of my fried-baloney hole.
Great. So we're agreed. African-Americans will henceforth be referred to as "coloreds."
We should probably get them their own water fountains while we're at it.
Stanley outs herself with the line about the "nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party."
She agrees with every bit of the hatred – and often the slander – of conservatives, Republicans and particularly, Tea Party people spewed at MSNBC. She just – allegedly – disapproves of the format.
We're not buying, it, Lady. Not from MSNBC or the NYT.
Instead, you play Douchebaggers and Dumba$$es.
Also, if the name Lady Krystyna comes from D&D, you must play it to know that.
Further, where do you see LadyKrystyna even commenting on this article?
No, but we can get you a sippy cup so you don't spill it on yourself.
@Washington –
"You blame others." As in – racist, terrorist and billionare lovers? I never knew, until the liberal media enlightened me, that all those farmers, merchants and housewives in Middle America hung with billionaires.
To people like EB, facts are only relevant when woven into a larger narrative that promotes their agenda while ignoring vital, but inconvenient, information. Here at Brietbart, we get ALL the info, even when it doesn't fit the established narratives of the authors & editors.
It's called integrity.
Get some.
You bring up a great point. To moral relativists, there is no such thing as truth.
The title is misleading. Liberals have no values.
"If you only read this site you would think democrats were going to come and get your guns, shut down churches, and tax the rich 100%."
Would you be opposed to any of that?
LMAO!!
Spoken like a total pu$$y. You're parents must be so proud….
I'm sure liberals would love to go back to their good ole days….
you're only part conservative, the "con" part.
is my grammar correct?
douchebag
Has to be the worst attempt at being clever I've ever seen.
I personally dont mind guns, I lived/live in rural missouri, as well as St. Louis and Seattle, and the gun owners across the regions have been responsible, although I dont surround myself with idiots/criminals, and there has to be a responsible pathway to gun ownership that would help to weed out felons, the mentally ill, and the young. While I feel that our public sector should be secular and religious vaules have no place in political discourse, churches, synogogues, mosques, temples, monesteries, etc have a place in social societies, and our government has no right to shut out/down any houses of worship that dont advocate violence or breaking of other laws.
I believe in a progressive tax structure, although I agree that only 5 tax brackets doesn't serve society fairly and that a better a structure can be created but still within our progressive tax structure. Most of the time our argueing is about the top marginal tax rate which is kind of crazy seeing that its such a small percentage of the public that is taxed at that rate, but I think the top marginal rate needs to somewhere between the 2010 and 1986 rates. Again only irresponsible people use "its not all or nothing tactics", its always in between.
Nonetheless, I doubt there'd be a huge outcry from the left if Obama suddenly called for a 100% tax on the rich and the abolition of firearms and churches.
Yes we do, havent you been reading this tea-people cheer leading comment page, we value income redistribution, muslim values, communism, spending increases, anti business policies, crushing environmental legislation, elitist vaules, anti-gun policies. Those may not be your values, but they are vaules. C'mon libs are devil spawns, its hard to believe we havent been put in internment camps yet.
Who is the left? I hear this use of the left? Who are they, who are the leftist politicians that would support this?
well the "reverend" Al preached his first sermon at age FOUR. he does not seem to have EVER attended a seminary he seems to hold his current credentials transferred from when he was a child preacher. makes me wonder what his ordination is really worth? Sounds a lot like the Universal Life Church, they will ordain ANYTHING that breaths….
@liberal –
'Isnt the Fox News evening lineup a tool to propagate a republican agenda?'
No. Many of the hosts are clearly conservative and/or GOP and present info and issues that supports their views. But those same hosts have liberals and Democrats on their shows who get to give theie opinions on that same info and issues. Why do you think it is the most popular cable news station? But those in the liberal media constantly ignore Fox's even-handed format and lie to their audience/readers that Fox News is just GOP propaganda. They are being VERY dishonest in this. Why do you think less and less people believe them? MSNBC attacks their GOP guests, slanders their political enmeies and does not provide a voice for dissenting opinions.
"If you only read this site you would think democrats were going to come and get your guns, shut down churches, and tax the rich 100%." Only if you are a liberal idiot who imagines everyone who opposes liberals "clings to guns and religion." What a cliche. Those issues are not the predominant theme of the posts here at all.
And I don't see people here cheerleading for politicians, either. And I don't need any lectures from you on being realistic. Thanks anyway.
No democrat is going to come right out and say what they really want – the American people would boil them in oil. The plan is to do it little by little, get people acclimated to it. Just listen to the rhetoric – the demonization of Christianity, the rich, etc is a relentless drumbeat.
robotic host …like a robot? dork. Not reading? oh, you call it that? I bet msnbc gets even fewer viewers now.
Well conservatives that have been on the msnbc opinion shows are as follows, Ron Paul, Rand Paul, Pat Buchannon, Michael Steel, Megan Mccain, Grover Norquist, Oirly Taits, Trent Franks, Ann Colture, Joe Walsh, etc. Mind you Palin, Bachmann, and Angle have been asked to be on Maddow and have refused the invitation. So that your argument that conservatives arent allowed on msnbc and that fox welcomes liberals and gives them ample time to discuss they point of view and dont get beat up on (have you seen Hannity) is very weak.
@Nick –
"So, one scribbler at the NYT has come to the conclusion that Sharpie is no different from the rest of the gaggle of turkeys at PMSNBC if my read is correct." But I say all Stanley was doing was tryig to make the NYT sound as if they are above all that before more people realize they are exactly the same. The NYT just couches their extreme liberal bias in a "classier" format.
I think some people may have felt my post criticized Dana, but that was not my intent. I ws just absolutely disgusted with the hypocrisy of Stanley's article. First Howard Kurtz at CNN tires to distance his outlet from MSNBC, while showing that ideologically, he approives of everything they say and do.
Then this Stanley at the NYT does the same thing. Imagine calling the hate-filled, slanderous rants against ANYTHING GOP at MSNBC "lectures on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican party."
@Nick cont –
So in supposedly criticizing MSNBC's format, she indicates that what they actually say there – liberals, with their fine, enlightened, all-things-wise and wonderful values – rock, and the GOP party – which has all those things wrong with it – sucks.
How stupid does she think the American voter is? First CNN and then the NYT try to distance themselves from MSNBC now that Sharpton and Schultz have drawn such attention to it. What outlet do you think will next jump on that bandwagon with some lame, half-baked crap which does not disguise the fact that all the liberal media share the EXACT same ideology, agenda and dishonest bias in their "news"?
It is totally amazing! He should have read Atlas Shrugged then he would have seen what would happen when his vail was lifted.
@wiggumc –
"…writers of said swirling sewer rag from writing truthfully on occasion…"
But Stanley did not write truthfully. She described the hate-filled, often slanderous and completely biased rants of MSNBC hosts as "lectures on liberal values and what's wrong with the Republican party."
Her article is as disingenuous as Howard Kurtz's criticism of Ed Schultz.
You can't really have values unless you believe in absolutes, especially absolute good and evil, or right and wrong. Liberals don't. You wallow in moral relativism until everything is a shade of gray and nothing is of any value at all. The Things you listed aren't really values but the means to your ultimate ends – the absence of all values and morals, except for perhaps those dictated by the State.
You are a cauldron of suck.
I know the commenter whose name you've ripped off, and too bad he's an agnostic and wouldn't call people godless.
FAIL.
if you can provide examples i'd love to hear them. Otherwise its just hearsay.
Some turds float and some turds circle before they sink into the stink. I think you are of the circling variety.
You colored too. Soon to be black and blue. From straining to blow your crap out your kazoo.
You are the expert Chester-the-Molester. So tell us what you know in 3 words or less. Oh, is that 2 words too many?
Al can be known as a Huckster, charlatan, Flim-Flam man, con artist, liar, race baiter, sleazebag, douche, polemic twister, rat bastard, snake in the garden, etc. But certainly not Reverend.
You can't possibly believe that crap, so what is your purpose in posting it?
@HoR –
Epic fail.
Apparently, since you seem fixated on pedophilia, you play with yourself instead.
I'm trying to figure out why your name isn't Obie Onanist…
Or perhaps we just call you $h!tbag and leave it at that.
Sure. Here's my favorite anti-rich lie from Obama: "The only reason this balanced approach isn't on its way to becoming law right now is because a significant number of Republicans in Congress are insisting on a cuts-only approach – an approach that doesn't ask the wealthiest Americans or biggest corporations to contribute anything at all."
Nothing at all? I'm pretty sure that the wealthiest Americans pay the lions share of taxes in this country.
In a previous speech he mentioned lifting tax breaks on corporate jets six times. You think that will even make a dent in the deficit? Of course not. Neither does he. So why'd he even mention it unless it was to demonize those greedy, corporate-jet flying rich people?
I won't even go into his Bible and Gun-clinger remarks.
@liberal –
I did not say they were not allowed. I said "MSNBC attacks their GOP guests." And I'm glad Palin, Bachmann and Angle refused the invitation to be mocked and savaged by biased hosts. I hope the trend continues. You will probably claim they don't want to "face hard questions." You probably also feel that Palin's statements about the liberal media show she "sees herself as a victim."
I also hope the trend continues that those conservative or GOP politicians who do go on MSNBC stand up for themselves, like Connie Mack did with CNN's Piers Morgan and Joe Wilson did with Matthews. But of course your side saw those events in a completely opposite light, believing Morgan and Matthews triumphed over Mack and Wilson. But your side is an ever-shrinking minority.
Maybe those drugs Pinch was on last night helped him to finally see the light. As good of a case for legalization as I've ever seen.
“I’m not going to be a robotic host reading the teleprompter like a robot,”
Nice try, Al. We know why you won't read the teleprompter.
Because you CAN'T read the teleprompter. RESIST WE MUCH!
Somebody was obviously sodomized by orcs as a child.
"The only reason this balanced approach isn't on its way to becoming law right now is because a significant number of Republicans in Congress are insisting on a cuts-only approach – an approach that doesn't ask the wealthiest Americans or biggest corporations to contribute anything at all."
The man is understandbly confused since none of the people who donated to his campaign pay any taxes at all.
The fact you included Bachanon, Steele, and that fat slut McCain rell me you have no clue what "conservative" even means.
Weekly Standard didn't actively help in spreading the proaganda of Stalin to the US so that's an apples to oranges comparison.
You spelled it correctly, but I didn't know "pedophile" had anything to do with Dungeons and Dragons.
Al Sharpton is the equivalent of a televangelist, someone who claims to do his prophet's work yet does not follow that prophet's teachings and only uses their cause for personal gain. If MLK were alive today both Sharpton and Jackson would be the first ones he'd rebuke.
While Martin Luther King wanted race equality Sharpton and Jackson want race dominance. They are exactly what MLK fought against but on the other side of the fence. I for one am sick of his and Jackson's crap and look forward to see the day they are both are gone.
If the wanted to give him a show, why not dancing with the stars? He could have been Chaz Bono's partner.
Yes it is, but why watch it when you can get "The best of MSNBC" right here.
Am I supposed to know who you are?
you left out no respect for human life.
Liberal Fight! Liibberrrraaallll Fiiiggghhhhtttt!
well said…
That's a fight between you and Rev. Jackson — you're the one mad at him using the "People of Color" reference. If you're hell-bent on calling him a racist, leave the rest of us out of it.
