ABC News is being publicly slaughtered by its own staff at the The New York Observer website, giving specific accusations of an ABC executive’s illegally hiring and firing without just cause, promoting based on whims, discriminating against homosexuals, blacks and sexually harassing of employees.
In reaction to these public allegations of a widespread, 20-year long hostile work environment by its executives, ABC News has launched a two-front defense: keep any other media outlets from reporting the story and refuse to launch an internal investigation.
Meanwhile executives at The Walt Disney Company, which owns ABC, are monitoring The Observer website constantly. “ABC’s own soap opera ‘General Hospital’ has nothing on this daily unfolding drama of ABC on this website. They click on it hourly to see the latest shocker,” a close source tells me.

The anonymous but public whistle blowing by ABC staff started last week in reaction to a puff piece in The New York Observer about ABC News Vice President Mimi Gurbst’s retiring to become a high school guidance counselor. The story enraged ABC staff past and present for, in their opinion, misrepresenting Gurbst as “cherished.” They commented on the story with riveting details about her reign of terror while running ABC’s news coverage operation. The anonymous allegations about Gurbst include:
- “How to Get ‘In’ with Mimi [A Guide for Future Students]: If minority, talk about your racial sexual preferences. Bonus points if you like white women and/or men. Extra bonus if they are Jewish.”
- “This is a woman who created an atmosphere of sexual harassment by telling me in specific detail in the middle of the newsroom how our closeted gay VP liked his sex and where, and then proceeded to tell me he WOULD promote her or he would pay.”
- “I remember when ABC was planning a black correspondents dinner – Mimi made a comment to Carole Simpson, overheard by everyone on the desk suggesting that the main course be fried chicken.”
- “And yes, you really did need to stop by the desk every day and find something to compliment and drop some dirty little sex joke.”
One former ABC correspondent who used his name when commenting is Richard Gizbert. A London-based ABC correspondent for 11 years, Gizbert was fired by Gurbst for refusing another war-zone assignment, after having covered wars for six years. Gizbert took ABC to a U.K. employment tribunal for “unfair dismissal.” He won the case and ABC paid him $100,000.
ABC News President David Westin, ABC Network President Anne Sweeney and Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger have all been silent about the allegations and their previous awareness of them. The ABC executives should answer these questions: Why didn’t Westin intervene? If Westin was not aware of the widespread, hostile work environment of his own news division, why was he shielded from that information? Did the victims go to ABC’s Human Relations department? If so, was there an investigation? Are there any records showing the long-term harassment?

Willow Bay and Bob Iger
Reading though the comments, one has to wonder if Mimi Gurbst’s close friendship with Huffington Post Senior Editor Willow Bay — who is married to Disney CEO Iger — provided Gurbst with protection from corporate interference in her actions. “Mimi does have a personal relationship with the Igers, particularly Mrs. Iger, which she has shamelessly flaunted over the years and played a part in her protection,” posted one commenter. Likely, Iger’s avoidance will come back to haunt him when he faces Disney stockholders demanding information about the workplace practices of ABC News executives.
Until now, ABC has successfully kept these very specific, detailed and believable accusations of illegal discrimination and workplace harassment story from being reported in other media outlets.
The ABC staff repeatedly asks on The Observer’s website for their fellow journalists to come to their defense. “I’m astounded that this thread has been up for a week and NOT ONE journalist has written a serious article about it,” posted a commenter on Tuesday. “THAT is the big, ugly picture here folks: journalists afraid to report the truth.”
To date, not one major newspaper, magazine, TV network, cable network, talk radio show or major website new organization has reported on the specific allegations against ABC News management (except an item in The New York Post gossip column Page Six).

ABC News considers itself a leading advocate for the public’s interest by investigating government and corporations. So, now that the workplace discrimination is exposed within its own headquarters, there seems to be no watchdog group to investigate the accusations. The hypocrisy of ABC News, which purports to uncover illegal and unethical action in government and corporations, but turns a blind eye on its own internal shocking allegations is astounding.
Accountability for the victims at ABC may come from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), which oversees the TV networks and grants their licenses to broadcast. The FCC should investigate the allegations by ABC staff and determine if ABC News is liable for workplace harassment, discrimination and a hostile work environment.
“These postings are not coincidences,” wrote a commenter. “They are the cries of people who have been voiceless for years,” Well, the time has come to give a voice to these victims, even if the rest of the media is silent. ABC’s news division, which was once the best in broadcasting, “uniquely qualified to bring your the world.” has now lost the quality, the audience and finally, its credibility.
Disclosure: I worked at the ABC News Washington, D.C. bureau for from 1995-1998. I have never met Mimi Gurbst, nor had any interaction with her, nor any other ABC executives mentioned in this column.

WoW!
That is an interesting article.
It has all the ingredients to grow legs and run.
Sexual harrasment, civil rights violations, politics, money and sleaze. Might as well bring the EEOC into the equation. I'll ask the first question that the article begs to ask: "Did Mimi Gurbst have an intimate sexual relationship with Willow Bay?"
If it were at fox news, there would immediately be a federal investigation and a congressional hearing.
But since it's a liberal media outlet, they don't care and will probably file suit to identify the posters.
The left IS the home of misogyny, racial hatred and discrimination against sexual minorities and they prove it every damn day!
What would anyone expect from progressives…?
After all they did found the KKK in order to intimidate and / or murder black folks who dared to support or vote for Republicans.
Sounds like she will make a great high school guidance counselor.

"Journalists afraid to report the truth." Gee, like that's breaking news or something.
Doesn't it though?
Probably end up on TV, under arrest, like some of those pedophile teachers, for screwing the kids.

exposing the Left's minion class will be an ongoing 'gift that keeps giving'…
As the voiceover said on the classic 'Naked City' tv series: 'There are eight million stories in the Naked City. You have just heard one of them'. And so it goes here. The PC Progressive crowd- once exposed- is shown to be the opportunistic, nasty, racist and sexist (their OWNinventions) backstabbers that they really are.
No surprise here…
Progressives only care about the misdeeds of non-Progressives.
When Progressives commit crimes against other people, Progressives don't really view them as "crimes". They're more like liabilities that non-Progressives can attack them for. Progressives have a weird sort of non-morality in that things like sexual harassment, bribery, sexism, ageism, racism, etc are really just acts that conservatives can be guilty of, and "war" is the only REAL crime against persons.
Meanwhile, my husband tunes into GMA every morning to see what "the other side" is talking about and there is pretty much NEVER a bit of news on that show. 100% fluff. Looks like ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN and MSNBC have given up on the news as well.
this would make for a great made for tv movie, but would any tv network have the guts to air it? they all have skeletons in ther closet, so none of them will be fast to act. the whole msm has very strange bedfellows, and mean spouses. they want to show no sign of partisanship, but their partners are each other.
FOX ought to make a series out of it. " Survivor Workplace."
This is only revelatory if you have never worked in a media environment. It sounds pretty much par for the course to me. Do you seriously believe they are not reporting on the cronyism in our current administration because they don't recognize it?
I support Rand Paul, and I believe that executive’s have the right to, illegally hiring and firing without just cause, promoting based on whims, discriminating against homosexuals, blacks and sexually harassing of employees, after all, it is a private company, why should anyone have the right to stop them from behaving anyway they want?
Rand Paul-LETS TAKE BACK AMERICA!! (all the way back to 1963)
two words: Roger Goodman – Here's another perfect example of senior management allowing a VP to act in inappropriate ways and how Westin's inattention allowed for a hostile work environment just doors away from his office.
"journalists afraid to report the truth"
And this is a surprise, why?
I guess ABC's flounderings rate as high as GMA,Inside Access or Hollywood Tonight. I think those are entertainment shows. ABC news certainly doesn't qualify as news anymore.
This is EXACTLY what Rand Paul means, the government should keep its grubby little hands off of private sector enterprises, because once the truth is revealed the public will naturally avoid those enterprises that continue to use discriminatory practices. The onus of responsibility is upon the American public to voice their opposition to these practices and let ABC know that this is not how we do things in America. The government is not the solution to the problem, the government IS the problem. What would you have the FCC do? Nationalize the ABC network so that they can impose their doctrine on the executive heirarchy? Oops, sorry, they've already done that with MSNBC…..
(snicker)
And at the next board meetings at a thousand corporations, the slightest hint that their companies were next would cause a massive run on fresh shorts.
So, what you are really saying is, "we the people" are the problem, right? after all," WE" are the government!! Oh wait I forgot, the government was taken over by corporatist, this is the reason we have NO say in government, and you want more corporate control?????
What about all the companies that do not sell to the public?? The Military Industrial Complex, or maybe you will no longer fill car car with gas, when all the oil companies begin to use discriminatory practices when hiring, or maybe they already do, or maybe you belong to a very large group of people who would endorse such practices, and would continue to purchase from such companies!!
I wonder what John Stossel thinks of this…

Lol willow
What are you trying to say man? Spit it out. Strive for coherence. "We" are not the government. This is a Republic not a Democracy. What are you blathering about the "Military Industrial Complex"? There wasn't a sentence in there that made sense. The "Military Industrial Complex" aka defense contractors DO in fact sell to the public sector almost exclusively. And they are under the tightest regulations of any industry in the country. They are audited on a monthly basis by holier-than-thou bureaucrats that have fat government paychecks with golden-parachute pensions to look forward to.
I hate having to look up a word to understand a comment ! dictionary.com here I come =(.
The MSM outlets have been hiding their own actions for a long while. They are really no different than most corporations. Good ole boy attitudes (does not require a male to be a good ole boy) and hiring practices tend to bring in unqualified (be it technically or socially) people to manage the "talant".
While i could not in good conscience assign illegal sexual activities to her, I have to agree that from the heresay above she does not appear to be a good candidate for one who is going to be guiding the future of children. But then again from the sound of it she fits the Progressive mold of mentors for young children.
These Big Networks think nothing of going after a politician they don't like or a corporation they don't like or anything entity or person they seek to destroy. Of course they've done ZERO real investigation into the Obama Administration, a seething cesspool of criminality and twisted liberal ideology run amok.
It's nice to see the backbiting, infighting and vitriol. It's kinda funny to see liberal Democrats aka the newsmedia IMPLODE.
As much as I'm enjoying this I'd have a lot more respect for these ABC employees if they'd had their mutiny before this woman left the ship. Sniveling, cowardly little twerps.
Article and posts are very interesting on so many levels. I have no first hand knowledge of what happened at abc news but such an outpouring of hostility about a former executive with such apparent bad behavior is worth additional investigation. It is not news that the MSM lacks any kind of political diversity, the product reflects a pasteurized, liberal worldview and operates with an self-censorship. Rather than continuous probing and skepticism of all candidates, the Obama idolization reminds most of the country and the MSM no longer serves any purpose.
Ultlmiately the MSM operates by "do as I say, not as I do", so MSNBC can accuse people of racism but apparently can't find a qualified black person to anchor a single show on it's schedule. Are viewers all racist ? Apparently we can elect a black man as President but won't trust him to read the news to us.
Nepotism, political smarts and who you know were apparently the skills required to prosper in WNT group.
Actuallu, this should emprove ABC's stanking with liberals. This is th ekind of conduct they deplore in others but respect in their midst. you know, do as i say, not as I do. As some of you have pointed out,if this was Fox News it would immediately be reported as fact and the president would probably bring it up at his next press conference (if he ever has another one, that is.)
Precisely!
This is no surprise. These people revel in their "sins" and they frequent the hell holes they find their victim/stories in.
Of course they are not sweetness and unicorns in private!
Public school teachers are generally screwing the kids! Oh, you mean that other thing. Hmmmmmmm

that is because the MSM is entirely owned by corporations that have less interest in the truth then they do in serving their self interests. Which is why new media is so important. We need info that has not been tainted by a company, a union, or a political agenda.
Hey there, Saints fan. It looks like ya got the best of ol' Hokey. Guess he took his puck and went home.
Seems to me that ABC through their actions likes what R Paul may be preaching.

Thanks brother. The guy is obviously incoherent. General standard for today's leftists. By the way, I'm glad your Raiders finally got rid of that waste of space from LSU. Gradkowski by himself is an upgrade. I'm sure the fans finally got through to Al.
Who are you talking to in particular?

A constitutionally limited representative democratic republic. Our form of government, the constitution limits the power of government. We elect representatives, so it's not a pure democracy. But we do elect them by majority rule so it is democratic. And the form of, the infrastructure, the total form of government, is republican, it is a republic.
Close to 60% of your income tax goes to current and past military expenses, 750 military bases around the globe to protect American vital interest, (corporate vital interest), I call this corporate welfare, what do you call it?
Maybe my analogies were wrong and wrought with emotion, I do not want to go back to a day when potential employees are turned away due to the color of their skin, I should have made the point that 80% of the work force are employed by small businesses, and how, if no law exists do you make certain that they use proper hiring methods, and how will we ever know if they do not?
What are your theories??
Sobered up a little bit I see. Did you take your first chip? Are you a friend of Bill? Has the bong been placed on the table? Maybe not.
"Close to 60% of your income tax goes to current and past military expenses, 750 military bases around the globe to protect American vital interest, (corporate vital interest), I call this corporate welfare, what do you call it?"
Where do my taxES go? Could you prove something absurd like that? If 60% of my income taxes went to defense (a Constitutionally viable government expense), the world would implode, because you liberals would trumpet the evil to the GODS. Why don't you just replace the word "corporate" with "evil". It is essentially interchangable with your crowd. Every time I see "corporate" with your people, I equate it to "evil".
"Maybe my analogies were wrong and wrought with emotion"
Maybe nothing you said made any sense.
"I do not want to go back to a day when potential employees are turned away due to the color of their skin"
Have you started the drugs again … STEP AWAY FROM THE BOOZE. Nobody disagrees with you douche.
"I should have made the point that 80% of the work force are employed by small businesses, and how, if no law exists do you make certain that they use proper hiring methods, and how will we ever know if they do not?"
Will we know when the nationally telivised lawsuits happen when anything remotely similar to what you're describing occurs? Racism is called out at every remote corner of the country. You are an idiot.
"Close to 60% of your income tax goes to current and past military expenses, 750 military bases around the globe to protect American vital interest, (corporate vital interest), I call this corporate welfare, what do you call it?"
One more comment on this … because it is SO absurd … and I'm kinda bored … you are essentially arguing that the American Military is at the beck and call of the "corporations". How? If you were to say that some sort of American Military presence were to prove some "corporate" purpose … I would say that it would prove some "American" purpose. That's the point. You have no idea why we are deployed where we are. So stop speculating. Jack@ss.
Don't drag him into it douchey. He's a God-fearing American loving guy. Keep your eyes on me.

I'm absolutely sure that the timing of these revelations has NOTHING to do with the recent purge at ABC News. It's probably not a wholesome development when schadenfreud approaches orgasmic levels of pleasure.
Current spending is close to 30%, but when you factor in the interest on the debt created by past military spending, as well as veterans benefits, and the cost of the war on terror, eg: Iraq, Afghanistan, it is close to 60% of your income tax!!
Yes, I am saying that the Military is at the beck and call of the corporations!
The war against Iraq is the creation of the corporations that have seized control of America and its institutions. America was once a democratic republic. It is now a corporatocracy. Corporations are soulless, deathless entities that have all the rights of citizenship that real people have and none of the responsibilities. Corporations have accumulated vast wealth that they have used to purchase, infiltrate, and colonize American government and many governments around the world. Corporations have absorbed the media, the two major political parties, the Congress, the Executive, almost all the Judiciary, in America and in many other countries, welding them into the globe-spanning unit that I have named the Corporatocracy. Corporations have distilled the essence of greed and rage to form their corporate structure. Profits must be maximized. Territory, natural resources, institutions, and citizens must be used and then discarded when they are no longer useful. Corporations must have more markets to colonize, and the military corporations, Boeing and Lockheed Martin, must have more countries to invade.
The US is run by the government, not the corporations. Wall Street doesn't fart without permission from someone in a high place involved with the federal government. The government should enforce anti monopoly, anti trust, and conflict of interest laws without favoritism. Get rid of lobbyists and special favors, like those given to a certain California senators husband (conflict of interest).
You lefties always tell us how the corporations are out to enslave everyone. Then just who in the hell is going to buy their products ? It's the government that is out to enslave. There is some degree of collusion between the corporate big wigs and their government counterparts but the real bad guys are the feds; they make the rules.
As far as small businesses hiring practices, they want the BEST, regardless of color or creed. Minorities are held back by you Johnny-Do-Gooders that are out to promote everyone whether they deserve it or not. Affirmative action hurts more than it helps. If you really care about minorities you would support school vouchers, like the system that was done away with in Washington DC right after the Obomba regime took power.

The US is run by the government, not the corporations.
Obama has 13 bankers in his administration. A century ago, Woodrow Wilson, then an academic, described an America in which “comparatively small groups of men,” corporate managers, “wield a power and control over the wealth and the business operations of the country,” becoming “rivals of the government itself.”
In reality, these “small groups” increasingly have become government’s masters.
The government should enforce anti monopoly, anti trust, and conflict of interest laws without favoritism. Get rid of lobbyists and special favors.
I am with you 100%, I would include, that we should have publicly financed elections!!
You lefties always tell us how the corporations are out to enslave everyone. Then just who in the hell is going to buy their products.
From 1973 to 1985, the financial sector never earned more than 16 percent of domestic corporate profits. In 1986, that figure reached 19 percent. In the 1990s, it oscillated between 21 percent and 30 percent, higher than it had ever been in the postwar period. This decade, it reached 41 percent. Bottom line is WE DO NOT MAKE ANYTHING!!!!!
It's the government that is out to enslave. There is some degree of collusion between the corporate big wigs and their government counterparts but the real bad guys are the feds; they make the rules.
You are sooo close to the truth, firstly there is a great deal of collusion between government and corporations, secondly how would you be able to tell difference between corporate takeover and government takeover? The bottom line here is, they are one in the same!!
As far as small businesses hiring practices, they want the BEST, regardless of color or creed. Minorities are held back by you Johnny-Do-Gooders that are out to promote everyone whether they deserve it or not.
I worked for a racist, I know the damage they cause, I know first hand how qualified employees, who were minorities did not stand a chance of ever getting hired, this previous employer is now a customer of mine, and still to this day has NEVER hired a minority, and has NEVER suffered any consequence as a result! So do not pass your Johnny-Do-Gooder BS on me!!!
Please provide a link to this absurd claim. I have one.
http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=...
You can see 20% of the budget for military, with an additional 7% for ALL FEDERAL RETIREES (military and civilian) 41% of the budget goes to UNCONSTITUTIONAL health care entitlements and social security. Try again dope fiend.
You are getting closer, now research the interest paid on the debt created by past military spending, and the war on terror, and you will be there! I am glad you are taking the time to educate yourself, now maybe you will become more active with regards to this insane spending of your tax dollars!!!!!
Why change the subject? Let's talk about sexism and homophobia at a MSM or rather "Progressive" news organization.
Lets say your numbers are correct, please explain how, 1/3 of your income tax being used for military expenditures are justified?
Revenge of the Narcissists
Why would the blogs pick this up? Sounds like Gurbst is leaving one high school job for another.
For millions of workers across America, the kind of infighting and ugly politics seen at ABC are daily fare in their own 9-5, but without any of the prestige or pay that comes with working at a major news network.
If the snakes in the snakepit had risen up like this on matters of journalistic principle- against 911 lies, the fake WMDs, illegal bailouts, whitewashing torture etc instead of just over how their egos and career ambitions were stymied- THAT WOULD BE NEWS. As it is, ABC apparatchiks are in the same category as government propaganda agents, so their whining may get little sympathy from the customers/viewers they have swindled and defrauded over the years with their corporate "reporting."
Tar balls are now in the loop current traveling up the east coast, the global econ is near detonation, and ABC and its other MSM corp peers are busily promoting another M.E. war that could lead to a nuclear calamity.
Do your jobs- real journalism for your customers- or continue go the way of the Titannic when viewers turn you off altogether.

Here's my quick response.
It seems we agree on some of the problems we face as a nation but I bet we disagree as to the solutions. I vote for less government, personal responsibility, and free markets with very little government control, with that control being strictly enforced. Wilson was a pig, and started most of our problems down the fast track.
And as far as your previous employer, you saying that all the laws we now have on the books don't work ? Imagine that. Why do you service him and his company ? Tell him to take his business elsewhere. You're just as guilty as he is. If he didn't hire the very best, then his business is not as profitable as it would have been if he had hired the very best regardless of skin color or nationality. And again, Wilson was a pig. He segregated the military and had members a the women's suffrage movement jailed. Wilson was a tyrant and a racist. And a progressive.
Yes we do agree on some of the problems, and I can agree on some of your solutions, but we first need to get corporations OUT OF GOVERNMENT!!!! We need to strip away corporate personhood.
I believe that corporations are not persons and possess only the privileges we willfully grant them. Granting corporations the status of legal "persons" effectively rewrites the Constitution to serve corporate interests as though they were human interests. Ultimately, the doctrine of granting constitutional rights to corporations gives a thing illegitimate privilege and power that undermines our freedom and authority as citizens. While corporations are setting the agenda on issues in our Congress and courts, We the People are not; for we can never speak as loudly with our own voices as corporations can with the unlimited amplification of money.
You may have a point regarding my customer, I may have to rethink my relationship with him.
Are you beginning to understand why I have a 73P? Make That 74p
I would agree about getting corporations out of politics, but after we get unions out (sic). I don't like public funding of elections because who controls the public funds ? The politicians. Nothing could go wrong there, now, could it. In a free market, with the government controls that I mentioned, a corporation would only be as powerful as it's customers make it.
As far as your rep points, I'll give a guess. First, I went through your comment stream and found that of 52 or so pages of posts, you had about a dozen pages where the total rep points for that particular page were at zero or above. The other 40 pages you rated as negative. You had eight posts that scored above plus 1, and every one of those was plus 2. Plus 2 was the highest you ranked on any post, but you had several -10 and below. Your total actual points scored is in the negative range. My guess as to HOW you got to a positive rating of 74p is that you get a bonus of some kind for eliciting responses from folks that have a high rating. For example, if Jamesb replies to one of your posts, his 131p rating would give you a higher number of bonus points than, say, a newbie with only 15p, and my replies to you would range somewhere in-between. Either that, or there is a way to manipulate the system, which is dishonest.
That is the HOW. I'm going to keep my ideas as to WHY (if someone is manipulating the score to distort your actual rating) to myself. For now.
Let's say my numbers are correct than the MOST it would be is 1/4. But math has already been shown to not be your strong suit. Because it's explicitly in the Consitution as a power of the federal government. And its a dangerous world that requires someone with the ability to respond to the actions of evil men and desparate situations. When the tsunami hit Inodnesia, it was the US military that was there to assist. Where was China? It was right in their backyard. Could you justify to me the 40% the is not Constitutionally viable?

I am a former senior level manager at ABC News. There needs to be an investigation here. There were numerous illegal and unethical practices that I had witnessed throughout my years there. Not only do I believe there was theft, fraud, and questionable accounting practices within my department, but, I also believe there culture of fear against reporting anyone that was in favor with Westin, Mimi, Phyllis, Amy, Roger Goodman, and company.
I hope that congress, the fcc, and other journalists will take the time to realize that this isn't just venting from those laid off. I left about 6 years ago and things were already a mess. Disney is a publicly traded company, questionable employment practices were not foreign to us as managers, and our public is being done a disservice by those controlling the way America gets its news.
If a mainstream respected journalist saw fit to run with this, I'd strongly consider going on the record with my names and dates and witnesses.
Drug use and distribution in the workplace, spying, theft, fraud, favoritism, sexism, racism, nepitism…. reported to senior levels and ignored!
All true, no hyperbole!
The sad part is that the hard working journalists at ABC News are being smeared by those who really should have a beef with the leadership. The reporting has always been true, but the leadership has been at best, inappropriate.
Bravo to Emily! Thank you for your article and your passion. I can confirm that the ABC News atmosphere is one of tension, unhappiness, & misery. The same defeated, demoralized attitudes permeate the hallways. Westin & his high-priced disciples look the other way when the Mimis and the Jeffreys get out of control. Bob & Amy, two of Westin's most useless tools, represent the most flagrant example of staying in high-powered positions w/bad attitudes and with nothing to do.
Westin fires the gifted, the hardest working or he reassigns them to less diserable positions while bulking up the top-executive tier, evidenced on the fifth floor and at GMA where there are SEVEN executive producers (a few more and they can start their own baseball team). And he bows to the talent, allowing them to dictate who stays and who goes when it comes to staff (George wanted Chris Vlasto removed).
