CNN is already under fire for giving disgraced former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer a TV show during family hour; now the network is being targeted by minority journalists for the hire. The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) has joined the protest. NABJ sent an open letter (full text below) to all the cable new networks –CNN, FOX and MSNBC- about the lack of racial diversity on their airwaves.

In the letter, the journalist organization specifically attacked CNN for replacing Campbell Brown at 8 p.m. with Eliot Spitzer. “It just seems that cable news can never find diverse candidates who are good enough to meet their standards. We want to know your standards,” NABJ demands in the letter.
CNN President Jon Klein has been unabashed about hiring the disgraced Spitzer. In the bizarre statement from the network, Spitzer is described as “a Democrat who resigned as governor in March 2008 after acknowledging visiting a prostitute, is a well respected political mind and a take-no-prisoners prosecutor.”
NABJ jumps on this, asking the cable network in the open letter: “Are you telling us that CNN could find no one better than an ex-politician who quit being New York governor after consorting with prostitutes to grace America’s living rooms each night?” The text of their letter:
Open Letter: National Association of Black Journalists Questions Diversity on Cable News Networks
Dear Cable News Executives:
It is 2010, but the National Association of Black Journalists sees our cable news networks moving backward when it comes to who they believe is worthy of anchoring prime time news shows.
NABJ was founded in 1975 to encourage news media companies to hire and to promote more Black journalists. At that time, black journalists originally hired to cover riots during the turbulent 1960s found they were not being assigned to meaningful beats or were only allowed to cover “Black” stories.
NABJ’s advocacy for fair hiring practices paid off. Many of our founders, including columnists Les Payne in New York and DeWayne Wickham in Washington, D.C., and anchor Maureen Bunyan in Washington, D.C. remain prominent figures in the media.
NABJ continues this advocacy today. To be candid, we have been focusing our talks with media executives on ways they can increase the diversity of their news management teams. It is our belief that a diverse management team improves coverage decisions and hiring practices. It seems, though, that the companies have taken that to mean that we don’t care about who is on the air. We’re watching, and we do.
Over the past several years, NABJ Executive Board members have met with leaders of the top media companies. Our message: “Let us help if you are looking for diverse talent.”
Some of the companies have reached out, but the names we have submitted never seem to be called in for interviews.
Three years ago, Ebony magazine’s Kevin Chappell noted, “While CNN has the most Black news anchors with eight, the other cable networks don’t fair as well… and none of the national cable stations has any Blacks in prime-time slots.”
Nothing has changed. NABJ questions CNN’s decision to hire former New York governor/attorney general Eliot Spitzer to co-host a new show in Campbell Brown’s old time slot. The company missed another opportunity to place a person of color in prime time. It just seems that cable news can never find diverse candidates who are good enough to meet their standards. We want to know your standards.
Are you telling us that CNN could find no one better than an ex-politician who quit being New York governor after consorting with prostitutes to grace America’s living rooms each night?

CNN does have Tony Harris anchoring in the morning, and Fredericka Whitfield, T.J. Holmes, and Don Lemon on the weekends. But that’s not prime time. The same can be said about MSNBC which last week named veteran Lawrence O’Donnell as the anchor of its new 10 p.m. show.
“In his story, Chappell talked with NABJ Member and CBS News anchor Russ Mitchell who summed up what many of us have witnessed over the years. Mitchell told Ebony “I’ve been to journalism conferences over and over again, and heard some executive say ‘I’d like to hire more African-Americans, but I just can’t find any qualified ones out there.’ That was b.s. then, and that’s b.s. now.”
NABJ couldn’t agree more.
Sincerely,
The National Association of Black Journalists

did they ever watch the bright white faces on msnbc?
I'd like to see the NABJ's short list of journalists they'd like to see as anchors.
"…you can simply join those of us who are boycotting watching any CNN…"
That started long before the Spitzer decision.
There's low class, no class, and finally there's CNN at the underside of the barrel.
…and exactly how big is it Mr Spitzer?
great photo
CNN is the new (old) National Enquirer of Big Foot sightings and alien abductions, while the National Enquirer is doing serious journalism. We do live in interesting times.
I am tired of blacks telling people they have to do whatever they want. Especially since O bama took office, the blacks think they should take over the world. Jus t like Holder the black DOJ. He let the black panthers get away with standing in front of voting places threatening people with billy clubs…………
I guess the FGCWHA (Former Governors Caught With Hookers Association) can launch a counter boycott of the NABJ.
[...] UPDATE: Oh my. National Association Of Black Journalists Joins Fight Against Spitzer Show On CNN. [...]
This is "Alice through the Looking Glass" time. To CNN; Hire whom ever you like. Decisions like Spitter will put them down the tubes sooner than later and that is good. To NABJ; Complain all you like but it sounds like whining to me. As long as you feel the need to have a "Black" anything Association, you will NEVER have my sympathies.
NABJ, like the Congressional Black Caucus, is another racist organization feeling it's legitimacy since the election of Mr. Obama. Those who cry of racism are themselves racist.

And I always thought Bill Clinton was the head of NABJ.
I have been boycotting CNN for at least ten years.
I did a quick BING and could turn up no Nat'l Assoc of White Journalists. Do Black people feel they are too weak to be American Journalists? Their title says so.
And NABJ would quickly suggest one of the black contributors from the BIGs to take that spot. Wouldn't they?
Please please please ……… watch this clip, I wonder if he is in the NABJ

I would like to send an open letter to the NABJ about the lack of racial diversity in their organization.
To be candid, I will be focusing this letter with the NABJ on ways they can increase the diversity of their management teams. It is my belief that a diverse management team improves organizational decisions and hiring practices.
I have found a shocking lack of racial diversity at the NABJ website. In fact after looking at their 44 founding members ( seen here http://www.nabj.org/about/founders/index.php ) and board of directors (see here http://www.nabj.org/about/board/index.php ) I have found them to have a uniform contempt for racial diversity and appear to be nothing more than a enclave of close minded xenophobic bigots.
However I'm sure this is in fact not the case, I am sure you are a very racially diverse organization who loves diversity and are not just a racist supremacist group that judges people only by their skin tone.
So to correct this unfortunately misunderstanding, I would recommend the following changes
Change the name of your organization from the National Association of Black Journalists to The National Association of Diverse Journalists. Since you are very sensitive to the need to be racial diverse, you must agree that this name would be more appropriate.
May I suggests the following corrections for your “About” page (see here http://www.nabj.org/about/index.php ):
Change “advocates on behalf of black journalists worldwide.” to “advocates on behalf of all journalists worldwide regardless of race, color, or creed.”
This will help prevent people from mistaking you for a bunch of race obsessed bigots.
Changing “Strengthening ties among black journalists” to “Strengthening ties among all journalist” will show you're really serious about racial diversity and are not advocating segregation of society into ethnic groups.
Change “Sensitizing all media to the importance of fairness in the workplace for black journalists” to “Sensitizing all media to the importance of fairness in the workplace for all journalists”. This must be a typo because a racial diverse organization couldn't possibly believe that only one group deserves fairness in the work place.
Change “Increasing the number of black journalists in management positions” to “Increasing the number of competent journalists in management positions”. This will reinforce your commitment to racial diversity by showing you care about the content of character and are not just bitter racists who rank skin color over qualifications.
"Number nine, number nine, number nine, number nine…"
Just another example of lefties taking care of lefties.

I agree with the National Ass. of Black Journalists (NABJ (chortle, snort)).
I think CNN could have chosen a more diverse team than Spitzer and the gal. Frankly, they chould have gotten Crazy Al Sharpton and the Right Reverenddd Jessie Jacksonnnn. They could have co-anchored it. You know, been the Connie Chung and Dan Rather of the New Millenium……………..
/sarc
As with political Representatives in the House and Senate,
it SHOULD matter NOT what color you may be, but can you put booties in the seats and do a creditable job……
Any other standard is, well, quota driven…
But if they put Eugene Robinson in Spitzer's slot, I MAY tune in…
I agree with nothing Robinson sez but I like him…White chick….out
You MUST be a racist to notice…(sarc off)
When pigs fly, indeed…
He was explaining his IQ as compared to yours……I think…
I'm not sure, but I think it will be mostly, black guys….
He would be a great fill in for Spitzer…Very classy…At least he'd garner some audience…
Spitzer…not so much…
Oh come now, do you really? hehe.
No that was Monica.
Look round my friend, pigs are a flyin'. I want these pigs to crach. I cannot imagine Spitzer being interesting to watch.
" I cannot imagine Spitzer being interesting to watch".
He would be, if he had personality…he he…………….
OMG…brilliant observation.
LOL!
I can't join the CNN boycott because I don't EVER watch CNN — however, IF I were to hear or read about CNN (or etc.) using programs with some diversity of thought, in Black and white, I would certainly tune in.
While I don't fault the National Association of Black Journalists for trying to promote their members for spots on CNN and other Networks, I think that some proof-reading is called for in any letters or papers sent on behalf of journalists:
" … Three years ago, Ebony magazine’s Kevin Chappell noted, “While CNN has the most Black news anchors with eight, the other cable networks don’t FAIR as well… and NONE of the national cable STATIONS HAS ANY Blacks in prime-time slots.” "
And like that.

I understand the fact that network executives are a bunch of whores (which is why Spitzer gets along with them so well) and that they will do anything for ratings. I get that, but, really, if that's what CNN has come to, if they are SO desperate for people to watch them, why stop there? Why not have a show actually hosted by prostitutes with politicians on as guests? Then we'll all be able to see why politicians and whores have so much in common. People will also see what the major difference is, which is that at least hookers are honest about what they do. The politicians? Well, you can figure that one out.
Why do we still have racist organizations where only one color of people are allowed to join.
I agree 100%!! There is NO WAY to discontinue diversity and racism in this country as long as there are 'black only 'anything!!! They keep screaming equality, and at the same time keep themselves apart from everyone else!!
"National Association Of Black Journalists"
Another African racist organization. There are so many black KKK organizations.
[...] » National Association Of Black Journalists Joins Fight Against … [...]
NABJ needs to amend the following: "NABJ was founded in 1975 to encourage news media companies to hire and to promote more Black journalists". They are really looking to encourage news media companies to hire and to promote more Black LIBERAL journalists. We all know that if you are Black and a conservative that you are really an Uncle Tom.
God forbid if there was a WHITE JOURNALIST organization.
I am so sick of these racist hypocrites, it makes me sick. Black racists who try to Blackmail businesses.
Eliot Spitzer is a Creepy Slob, but the Black Journalists Organization is no different than any Race-Exclusive organization.
Why do they think they have the right to be Racist, but others do not?
Rowdy Boots
Spitzer? I have no problem with Spitzer. He has an extensive history with whores, so he'll fit right in at CNN. But Kathleen Parker????
[...] » National Association Of Black Journalists Joins Fight Against … [...]
Yep.
I must say, it's kind of nice watching CNN get attacked by the black organizations for lack of diversity. I mean, it'd be even better to see them get attacked for lack of idelogocial diversity, since that's the only kind that actually matters. But after getting jumped on over and over and over again because the Tea Parties supposedly hated black people, I can't help but snicker a little as I watch CNN fall prey to the same line.
