As everyone knows – everyone, that is, excepting those sophisticates who revere The New York Times – the former “paper of record” routinely plays fast and loose with news that bears on its ideological agenda, both by how (and whether) such stories are reported and, more subtly, by the emphasis they’re given (or not given) by their placement in the paper. Thus it was, for instance, most infamously, that Abu Grahaib was on the paper’s front page for an astonishing 32 straight days; while The Times somehow managed to report on Barack Obama’s dropping a certain Reverend Jeremiah Wright from the ceremony announcing his candidacy for the presidency without getting into the ugly details of precisely what it was that made his self-identified mentor so embarrassing. And, by the way, even then, burying the story on page 19. The Wright story was there for the taking – he’d already been quoted in all his inflammatory viciousness by Rolling Stone – but, given The Times’s outsized influence with the lemmings of the mainstream media, the practical effect of its indulgent coverage was to bury for a full year the story that would have surely derailed the freshman senator’s candidacy before it got started.

Then, again, sometimes ideologically difficult stories never get run at all. Which brings us to the curious case of Eric Massa, the upstate New York Democratic congressman who’s just resigned in the face of an ethics investigation for having allegedly harassed an aide. Last Thursday, the Times covered the story the same way as everyone else – okay, they stuck it on page 28, and they didn’t specify the aide was male, (except via a single reference to the aide as “him”), the same way males and females are interchangeable in their wedding announcements, but that sort of lunatic p.c. is pro forma. So, for that matter, was that Massa’s resignation seemed as much a concern for Timesmen David Halbfinger and Raymond Hernandez as for “blindsided Democratic leaders in Washington, who are already facing a brutal political climate as they try to defend the party’s majority in the midterm elections in November.”
Nor was the paper’s Saturday follow-up story on Massa’s mea culpa – “there is no doubt that this ethics issue is my fault and mine alone” – problematic. Indeed, for Times readers that seemed the end of the story. As usual, they dwell in smug ignorance.
For Eric Massa may be a screwup, but he wasn’t done talking. As Politico and Roll Call, among others, have reported, he subsequently gave an interview to an upstate New York radio station in which he claims, as Politico’s Tim Grieve reported, “that he’s the victim of a power play by Democratic leaders who want him out of Congress because he’s a ‘no’ vote on health care reform. ‘Mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill,’ Massa, who on Friday announced his intention to resign, said during a long monologue on radio station WKPQ:
‘And this administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill. And now they’ve gotten rid of me, and it will pass. You connect the dots.’
Needless to say, such a charge, bearing as it does on the extraordinary lengths to which this administration will go to secure a win on health care, is explosive stuff – as who can doubt it would be for the Times if the alleged perpetrators were Republicans. We’re talking tactics far beyond the usual – indeed, an implicit threat to any Democratic congressman weighing a ‘no’ vote that if there is any dirt in his past, Democrat bully boys stand ready to go public with it.
This is the huge story at hand: the no-hold-bars thuggery of Chicago politics writ large. It “might take a novelist to do justice to the ObamaCare-induced paranoia that now engulfs Congress,” as The Wall Street Journal editorializes, of the ugly politics the administration is so promiscuously practicing as a means of “…building its cradle-to-grave entitlement citadel.” The attitude has become “the right bill is any bill, by any political means necessary…Spooked Democrats shouldn’t be surprised if they wind up being double-crossed for the ostensibly greater good of Mr. Obama’s legacy.”
But, then, while reporting such a story would make for excellent journalism, at this crucial juncture it would also be the worst kind of public relations for Obamacare – and the New York Times has long since forgotten which business it is in.

Eric Massa is a liberal, or a liar.
He said here, Rep. Massa: I will vote against the interests of my district
that he would vote FOR the public option.
So, which is it? Liberal or liar? Hmm…isn't that redundant?
If he's just a lying liar, then why are the Democrats freaking out trying to throw him under the bus and smear him before he appears on Glenn Beck tonight?
Everything he says is a lie, yes (unless he suddenly switches back and supports ObamaCare)?
Then why are Democrats worried?
What if this were Rove naked in the shower threatening Congressmen? Would it then merit the attention (and the defense) of the mainstream press?
More support for Andy McCarthy's conclusions (National Review Online – 2/27 The Corner):
"In the Democrat leadership, we are not dealing with conventional politicians for whom the goal of being reelected is paramount and will rein in their radicalism. They want socialized medicine and all it entails about government control even more than they want to win elections. After all, if the party of government transforms the relationship between the citizen and the state, its power over our lives will be vast even in those cycles when it is not in the majority. This is about power, and there is more to power than winning elections, especially if you've calculated that your opposition does not have the gumption to dismantle your ballooning welfare state."
They don't care about Constitutional principles, "the Party", constituents or – most importantly – the preservation of the Republic. We have never seen anything like this before. And that is just what Obama & Co. have been betting on. The Cloward-Piven Strategy:working hard to transform America into a mere shadow of its former self.
I suppose they are trying to smear him because he is damaging their image, i.e. telling the truth about how they operate.
But, what are we to make about his statements saying that he would vote for the public option and go against the best interests of his district?
So, which is it?
I think he is another Mark Foley.
"What if this were Rove naked in the shower"
Why? Why did you have to go there?
I was trying to eat.

I've long since forgotten what business the New York Times is in.
He's voted against a bill with no public option. How does that make him a liar?
What the media seems to be missing (or worse, not missing but rather enabling) is that the current government is not being run by democrats or liberals- it is being run by leftists statists, and they aren't the same thing. Massa, for all his faults, is a moderate/liberal democrat who just got a rude awakening as to the difference. He has just been schooled in Chicago thug leftism, and at least has had the spine to not go quietly.
This is not about healthcare, and has never been. It is about leftists ridding us once and for all of the concept of limited government and creating a behemoth state in which everyone, through healthcare, will be invested in maintaining. We will be reduced to being like Europe, where even the 'conservatives' are statists with just a different brand of stastism, and which the leftists will abide for brief periods because they know that their basic foundation of government uber alles will be preserved regardless of who is in power.
We must tell everyone, and be ready to explain to anyone and everyone why this cannot pass. The MSM isn't going to. They're more concerned with procedures and the horse race ( will the Dems have enough votes? Will they use reconciliation? Will Obama score a victory and secure his legacy? Will the House and Senate agree? etc) rather than explaining what's actually in the bill. Of course, they long ago have forgotten which business they're in. It's up to us.
Bird cage liners.
Still waiting for Rahm's denial that he never talked to him, saw him in the shower, etc. Gibbs said it was silly and ridiculous but he didn't say it was untrue or that Massa was lying.
That's OK. They did too.
I believe Jamesb used the Sunday edition to smack around Jorge ("Che-Z") last nite…Put it to really good use…
Americans accepting this ObamaCare mess are not acting in their own best interest, kinda like Blacks supporting Planned Parenthood…Only this Health care take-over is more obvious, but just as insiepent..
Oh as for the NYT…
Just fish wrap now..
Surely there had to have been a congressman that witnessed Rahm doing this, or something like it, perhaps a Republican one will come forward. If Rahm had poked someone like me in the chest, there would have been proof, because I would have poked him the eye with my fist and everyone would have seen the shiner.
9/11 leaks
whistleblower
9/11 exposure
extortion blackmail bribery
The New York Times is irrelevant and so are the nitwits who write the garbage it contains…
The old Grey Lady is now America's fish wrap of choice.
Sorry, maybe I didn't make my original post clear, I was typing too fast.
In the link above, Eric Massa was saying that he would vote for a bill with the public option, even though his district is "right wing Republican" (Massa's words) and didn't want a health care bill, much less the public option.
In other words, if the bill contained the public option he would have voted for it, against the wishes of his district.
Who wants to bet that by tonight's Beck's show, Massa is going to come down with a case of amnesia?
The Democrat Implosion is going exactly according to my plan…BWAHAHAA !…
…forget The New York Slimes – this scandal-plagued administration will be outed by The National Enquirer – what John Edward's calls "America's Newspaper of Record"…
I heard Massa ask, "Why? Was Rahm even in the shower of the Congressional Gym" I ask why in the Hell do we have a Congressional Gym?
If? That happens, it will only re-enforce the perception that this administration is a bunch of thugs.
Your point is well taken. I agree that Massa doesn't deserve any hero status, not from us, and not from his constituents.
But there's another issue at hand. And that is threats and bribes that we know are happening inside the Washington cesspool in order to force one party's agenda. And if this guy, or anyone else, wants to help expose the corruption, then I want to hear it. As much as I loathe many of these chicago-style players, getting one of them to testify against the others may be the only way to crack the seal on this culture of corruption.
Not for my birds. I don't want to get my screen dirty and the birds have better taste.
i have read the NYT for over 2 decades but have not picked one up, or any other paper, in a about a year. always i retain some level attachment if just for the memories BUT in this case i am looking forward to the death of NYT. there is no point in questioning their level of professionalism they are simply not journalists but rather hired tools. good riddance!
The author makes some good points but WOW – you and some of these other posters are just way too obsessed with the New York Times and their manner of doing business……which is no different than how many other newspapers, tv networks and yes, websites like this one operate. Why are conservatives so impacted by what the Times does and does not print and which page they are printing it? I can assure you, "liberals" and other NY Times readers really do not take it as Holy Scripture anymore. In fact based on the dwindling number of readers and large stacks of unsold papers I see on the way home, they don't take it period.
CNN covering the pro-healthcare advocates with wanted signs for murder bearing pictures of insurance execs. and that they may become violent, only barely noteing they were ACORN-like activists that go to tea parties. Remember block and duck when meeting these peaceful activists.
Seems to me they are in a lose-lose situation. Mr. Massa is a New Yorker, so this will not sit well with New York. Doesn't anybody care about ratings and the business bottom line anymore.
Look, I definitely don't want to carry water for the NY-Commie-Times, and I have no doubt but that they are doing everything they can to bury this story, but I also feel compelled to point out that Massa is a Dim-ocrat, and cannot be trusted either. Check out this article at Big Government:
http://biggovernment.com/kolson/2010/03/09/fact-c...
Here's an excerpt:
Blogger: So if we got your meetings to 60/40 and there was single payer in a bill, you’d vote for it?
Massa: Oh absolutely, I’d vote for single payer.
Blogger: If it was 60/40 sentiment in the room…
Massa: Listen, I tell every audience I’m in favor of single payer…
Blogger: So it there was still 80/20 in the room…
Massa: If there was a single payer bill?
Blogger: If there was a single payer bill…
Massa: I will vote for the single payer bill.
The NYT is one of the primary institutions leading Progressivism in its march to institute statism and take away the liberty we are guaranteed in the Constitution. Regardless of how many Liberal/Progressives still read it, the NYT has an incredible amount of power. For example, even an far-left Liberal can be ousted from a blue-state governernorship by the NYT. That's just one overt example.
Most of the MSM looks to the NYT to set the tone and tenor of every news story they feed us. If the NYT doesn't approve of a story, most likely the rest of the MSM will bury it.
Simply put, the NYT largely controls the content of the rest of the MSM. This is less so nowadays because of Drudge and other alternative media sites, like this one. However, although the alternative media's ascendency has begun, the NYT is still a very powerful force to be reckoned with.
Because these poor public servants cannot afford to go anywhere else for a workout. After all, representatives who are not in leadership positions only make $175,000 per year, plus benefits. Seriously, how can they even afford to eat on such a paltry sum?
That's only $14,583 per month. And you expect them to pay for a gym membership out of that? Get real.
Mainstream media? Just ignore – if everyone does, it will fade away – there simply aren't enough libs out there. Who cares what Keith Obermann or Katie Couric or the rest of the swine who make up the MSM says? Just stop talking about them or patronizing their media. A dollar for Hollywood is 50 cents for the Democrat party. And demand entertainment for conservatives – and how about a cable channel? A golf channel but no conservative cable channel? Aren't there more conservatives than golfers? And conservatives news biased in favor of conservative causes. A worthy wish list.
I believe the death knell for the MSM will have be a combination of their coverage (or lack of it) on Obama, global warming and Health care reform. We have seen all three subjects get highly subjective coverage, permeated with slant and quite different than coverage in the alternative media and blogs.
Trying to get us to move along because there's nothing to see, eh? Nice try. As for me, I won't give up until I'm dancing on the grave of the Times. Then, and only then, can we cry "enough"!
Well said. What Massa's specific objections were, I'd really like to know, but it's clear that for one reason or another, he wasn't going to go along (or at least, that's what he's saying now). I think there's a lot more to this story than meets the eye.
Massa is lying through his teeth. If Charlie Rangle and Barny Frank can survice ethics investigations he would too if the incident happened as he described. Heck Rep. "80 grand in cash in the freezer" (forget his name) held on for what a year? Look Rham may be evil but he isn't stupid. He knows that an ethics commitee investigation could at worst give Massa some sort of weakly worded rebuke, and Massa knows it too. You cank blackmail someone into resigning unless you have SOMETHING scandelous, that's how it works. Massa is in the closet and is trying to deflect away from that.
I'm surprised they wouldn't send Barney Frank into the shower after this guy. Talk about intimidation!
Picture this, "My name is Bawney Fwank and I'm hea to tell you to vote for obamacawe or I will make you pick up the soap!"
A taxpayer-subsidized, under-used Congressional gym at that. Let's be honest – no one would EVER by a 2011 Congressional Swimsuit Calendar.
Bingo…you quoted someone who said it best!
"They want socialized medicine and all it entails about government control even more than they want to win elections."
Maybe they should start fearing for there lives. No threat from me all watching Big Brother. But how far are the people going to let them enslave us against our will?
It makes makes me chuckle when I read anything like Brass Knuckle Tactics. Or how they fear Pelosi in the House. Because my God how wimpy are these people? I mean afraid of Rahm Emanual? I guess if he has a couple of no neck goons protecting maybe. But him Brahahaha he is a dweeb. Amd Pelosi? A stiff breeze could blow that hag off the planet. I guess that's what happens when you get a government run by a majority of lawyers instead of some real men and women who are not afraid to mix it up. All lawyers do is threaten you with another law suit. How manly.
don't dawg on the NYtimetogo, it makes great toilet paper in an emergency, watch out for that rash though, they'll get you one way or another.
It's the liberal ink…
So, you were the one…
It was useful to see Massa recanting everything on Glenn Beck. How did these insane morons get elected to Congress?!
Well said. This is a case of vipers in a pit going at each other. Normal, decent Americans who are outside of the pit looking in should remember, their infighting does make them any less dangerous to us.
