Sandra Soto, PhD, is a professor of “gender and women’s studies” at the University of Arizona and, naturally, she couldn’t resist getting in her little gender-and-women’s-studies professorial dig at the Arizona immigration law. Hey, we’re all lefty bedfellows here, right?

another liberal that hasn't read the bill.
There's a reason why parents get pissed off when they spend astronomical amounts of money for college, only to find that it gets wasted on subject matter like gender/womens studies, race studies, liberal arts, etc.
These new 'feel-good' classes are nothing more than emotional basket-weaving classes. They leave the students woefully unprepared for the real world.
These Universities are out of touch with the real world, just like the main stream media and the liberal politicians. This kind of stuff is rampant and it is where Obama cut his political teeth. Remember Ward Churchill, just the tip of the iceberg.
What a bone-headed "professor"!
She's standing there, cheerfully trying to make the facts fit the narrative, and those louts (patriots) in the audience are having none of it. Screw her and the progressive horse she rode in on!
She got what she deserved. Oh, did you notice the tone she took? She sounded like Al Gore, Hillary Clinton and Diane from that telvision show Cheers, all rolled into one. They all take that pedantic, preacher-teacher tone, as if the tone itself will miraculously wash away any critical thought on the part of their audiences.
Another example why dims/progressives become the 'educated' 'elite.'
They don't have to be responsible enough to research beyond their own little circle of 'experts' and 'news' reports.
That's the problem with these 'liberal studies'…Teaching a subject while critically analyzing only one side of the subject matter is INDOCTRINATION, not education. How can one learn critical thinking skills, if only one side of the coin is looked at?
God forbid, someone in one of those classes poses an opposing viewpoint in class.
I'm surprized that the mortar board on her head wasn't spinning like a propeller.
Here in Tucson, Atzlan has actual headquarters where Hispanics meet to determine ways to over throw the areas of America they consider theirs. That includes Arizona, California, New Mexico, parts of Texas. Raul Grijalva is doing his best to remake Tucson. The school kids are taught this is the right path in some of these ethnic studies classes. That is sedition, plain and simple. They already have LA. That mayor is a real Chicano who will grind that city to dust. Why? Why don't they just go back to their own country and change THAT if they are so desirous of a good life? Because it's easier to steal it from others, that's why. How about the huge Indian reservation – 2 million square miles or so? They could fight the natives for that as well. But they don't. Why? Because it's worthless desert. They want what others have built without the effort of building it. That's greed, sloth and envy all rolled into one.
"…is considered the strictest anti-immigrant legislation in the country…"
It really is incredible to watch leftist word-play in action. The folks who have said we should never have acceded to the phrase "illegal immigrant" have a point: "illegal alien" become "illegal immigrant" became simply "immigrant." The bill's not written to harm legal immigrants simply because the left keeps repeating that canard.
At least she didn't say "undocumented American!"
Ah, another victim arts professor blathering on and on about nothing. If you ever want to feel cheated out of an education, take (insert minority here) studies as your major.
I could go on a diatribe about higher education in general, but I digress. Needless to say, I feel like I'm wasting money and time in college currently.
This is absolutely classless. Nothing would infuriate me more than to bring up any political topic during a commencement speech. She doesn't realize that people don't care what commencement speaker's have to say and that her words are going to influence anyone.
Imagine having your taxes pay this nimwit's salary and then having to listen to this drivel. The middle-class has awoken.
Is there another kind?
Find yourself a copy of "Expanded Universe" by Robert Heinlein. Look at the last essay in the book, titled 'The Happy Days Ahead'. I have excerpted part of it here:
Heinlein on Education (circa 1980) (Part 1) -http://www.grouchyconservativepundits.com/index.p...
Heinlein on Education (circa 1980) (Part 2) -http://www.grouchyconservativepundits.com/index.p...
Note that this was written thirty years ago. Why is anyone surprised at the decline of American "higher education"?
Um, though I agree with you on gender and race studies, liberal arts education (history, government, english, etc) are what MORE kids should be studying. Notice a lack of critical thinking ability in today's youth? It's because classes like logic, US government, and philosophy aren't required anymore in most places.
But, I concur with the intellectual vapidness of gender and race studies. Don't add much to society.
Gender and Women's Studies PhD – another Mickey Mouse degree.
Well said, Mikey!
Nothing to add to that but a thumbs up.
HA HA!
It's not "the strictest" because California's Penal Code Section 834b is WORSE!
It doesn't have the amended restriction on "racial profiling," nor does it penalize police for using it!
So AZ's law is more lenient than CA's!
It's amazing how she can espouse the values and virtues of education and not have one. She's concerned about the AZ laws which merely reiterate the national position while at the same time she doesn't concern her self with the policy attacks on the bill of rights.
She should consider her self fortunate to have been able to speak on this day for Obama has already lowered the burden required to wiretap and removed the presumption of privacy in cell phone conversations all together. She is more concerned about the freedoms of others for which we have no duty/responsibility as she willfully, in fact gleefully enters into the mass shower rooms of progressivism that are washing away those same freedoms from us.
She concerns her self and others to apply a critical throught as a metaphor, while asking us to adorn the shackles of statism willfully in order to free our policy leaders from that menial task.
My suggestion to her is that if doesn't respect the people who gave their lives for the freedom she casts aside, then she is welcome to move to Venezuela. I wish her godspeed but I have no desire to join her.
Why did she feel she "needed" to spread her liberal Moonbat agenda to this captive audience?
Did she, in her infinite elitist wisdom, feel that she would be preaching to the choir and receive a standing ovation?
(I guess she thought she was in front of Queen Nancy and her House of Reps?)
What a dimwit.
The country is turning quickly and everyone is very, very tired of these batsh!t crazy libtards and their big mouths.
Speaking as the holder of a BA in philosophy, don't kid yourself that phil departments promote logic, sound thinking, or anything other than mental fuzziness. Foucault and Derrida rule there, as well, if not by name; and the clear 'winners' among phil faculty are Plato/Hegel/Heidegger, not Aristotle/Hume/Kant.
What we really need are more *engineers*- people who by training are forced to deal with the real world, people who are less concerned with precious Theory than whether or not it works.
Left wingers are obsessed with their politics, they can't change the subject. That's what happens when your politics are your religion.
Well, maybe that was the philosophy department in the school you went to. The department I passed through for my minor offered logic, which I took, ethics, as well as a course on the philosophy of major scientists throughout history (from their own journals). There wasn't a left-wing bent in there (though there was in the government department). And I am not knocking engineering, but a populace with the ability to think is vital. The ability to think is honed by the liberal arts.
Also, in 8 philosophy courses that I took in college, Foucault and Derrida didn't come up. I did spend an entire course on Aristotle.
Not all academics are lemmings like the dolt in this video. Check out "Professing Feminism: Education and Indoctrination in Women's Studies" by Noretta Koertge and Daphne Patai. Koertge was one of the earliest supporters of the Women's Studies movement in academia. When the discipline imploded under its own ineptness, Koertge rightly jumped ship and swam for sane waters, but not before writing this scathing critique with Daphne Patai. Koertge is a prof. of philosophy of science. Patai is a language and literature professor.
What I really objected to was her using that platform for her own personal agenda. She's supposed to be telling these kids what to expect going out into the world and what advice did she offer? Nothing cohesive. Just went on and on about how unfair the immigration law in Arizona was. Maybe she should take a page from her own book on critical thinking and do some of that. Maybe read the actual law. And some gave her a standing ovation? Please.
In the age of YouTube, you would think that a professor would know better than to lie about "cuts to education". Education is one of the only growth industries that exists today. Isn't this idiot of a president proposing another bailout of teachers? She could not bring herself to speak the truth out of self interest. What she really wants is for the State of Arizona not to cut funding of her worthless women's study program. We'll hear more specious complaints like this (hopfully from unemployed, redundant government workers) as the budget cutting knife starts to go to work on Jan 2nd, 2011.
Thank you for replying, and for making such cogent points. Her remarks truly lacked cohesiveness, not to mention, as you said, being totally irrelevant to the actual task at hand, providing advice to the graduating class.
It's as Rush Limbaugh said (and I'm not his biggest fan, by far): Results don't matter a bit to the progressives / liberals / socialists. For them, it's all about their good intentions.
Case in point: The War on Poverty didn't do a damned thing toward ending poverty. It merely created a larger entitlement class, so the Dim-bulb-o-crats were well-represented on election days.
But, but, but, but…. We had good intentions. They can all, including this proggie professor, shove their good intentions into a dark place, where there shineth no sun.
Could not have said that any better. They want what others have built and then will trash it and tear it down until it becomes exactly like what they were fleeing in the first place.
Well then, this little tidbit will thrill you even less. Here's a glimmer of what some professors are teaching at universities. It's scary.
http://ws.web.arizona.edu/people/faculty/soto.php
No wonder the AZ Superintendent of Education wants to drop racist and seditious courses at the high school level in Tucson. Next, they need to work on the State Universities. That's probably what she's afraid of – reduction in force.
We don't need more engineers, the main problem with that field is that they're far too specialized. Any given engineering job will get 1000 replies, and maybe 5 or so will be qualified. This is, of course, coming from someone who is studying to be an engineer ><
I do disagree somewhat, though. I feel that even engineers should get a liberal education, picking up things like philosphy, political science, or arts along the way. Personally, I'm taking Russian Studies along with my engineering degree. (I feel that there are lessons in great failures, and the USSR's decline into gangster capitalism is a huge example) Oftentimes, I disagree with my professors in RS, since they're generally pro-communism. I've had the good luck, however, of having professors that have the ability to see and argue for both sides, something that many of the Chicano or Women's studies (Or American studies, there are a few more, but these are just examples) professors lack. I see that as a failing on their part, caused by being part of the community that they study. Personally, I think it's a shame that they let teachers that are so attached teach these subjects, since they aren't going to actually teach, they're going to try and convince you that their group is the supreme group, that they've been oppressed, blah, blah, blah. There are counter-examples, but for the most part, I think you'll find the above true.
The problem isn't necessarily with the classes themselves, it's with the teachers who fail to separate their strong political views from the classes.
so she asks the audience to apply critical thinking skills and then gets upset when they do…oh, that's right…only critically examine what is said by conservatives, do not apply that standard to any liberals…excuse me…progressives.
good point
Latino Studies are good for forming protest marches and looking for loopholes in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
They are the launch pad for membership in LULAC, NCLR and MALDEF. They breed the discontent that fuels Aztlan.
It is sad that so many students are lured into the left agenda through the likes of Soto.
Meet Soto the scholar. (From the University's website):
" Her interdisciplinary research agenda draws on Chicana/o and Latina/o literary and cultural studies, queer theory, and gender studies to offer innovative approaches to the overdetermined terrain of social relations, cultural representation, and knowledge production. Her book Reading Chican@ Like a Queer: The De-Mastery of Desire (University of Texas Press, 2010), replaces the race-based oppositional paradigm of Chicano…"
People get PAID for that?
Soto obviously went to the Pauline Kael School of Ideological Diversity. Despite the poll ratings supporting the new immigration enforcement rules, the professor probably hadn't talked, emailed or Twittered with anyone in support of the bill, and thought everyone would agree with her comments (or conversely, she may have forgotten that once college students are graduates they no longer have to shut up and take it when they're at odds with a statement by their professor, out of fear that their grades will suffer for speaking Truth to Liberal Power).
I am not sure that it is true that higher ed leaves students unprepared.
With enough "social science" classes one can branch out into such lucrative careers as bureaucrat, teacher, non profit organization employee, Obama administration czar, and of course, President.
If you are correct that the middle class has awoken, the among the first orders of business in the next GOP controlled legislative and executive branches will be the immediate de funding of all institutions of 'higher learning,' including the abolition of the Dept of Education.
Why would any truly conservative government fund institutions devoted to churning out as many Marxists as possible?!
As a woman, I am offended by the whole "gender studies" genre. My nephew's wife spent her father's money to go to Vanderbilt and study this colossal waste of time. My kid would have to pay for it themselves. "How I hate myself" should be the subtitle for those courses.
Yes. She thought she would be a star.
A prime example of the result of her field of study. Ignorance.
I puked a little bit in my mouth when the Prof made the comment the graduating students had critical thinking skills…
It is indoctrination U…
I had to take a pointless women's studies course to graduate when I was at the University of Arizona. Sad to see the same idiocy from the faculty twenty years later.
Ain't it great to know that by us educating ourselves, ignorance on our part, which I think was rampant before this "Great Awakening" of the American public, is gone.
As to this "professor", her ignorance will never be gone due to the fact that she obviously has no desire to seek out the truth. Good riddance to her, but you gotta love that hat!
I am feeling a paradigm shift in the educational system around our country if we make it out of this mess…..thank you Arizona for leading the way!
Interesting: she asks people to use skills she demonstrably lacks. I just wish a "Read the Law" chant got started…
Three words: Invest in leafblowers.
I will take what we saw…Conservatives never go over the line…we are to polite.
Hang on… Here we go… PRIVATE PAY PLUMMETS, GOVERNMENT HANDOUTS SOAR!
http://usataxpayer.org/?0037479012
Liberal Democrats voted in a colossal idiot with zero experience (other than voting present) to run the nation. ObamaCommie and his puppet Congress squandered our tax dollars driving up the debit. They entitled unions, welfare recipients, government drones, illegal aliens, those still mooching off mom and dad, and other worthless freeloaders. They gave them free taxpayer health care, housing, education, you name it. ObamaCommie promised it could all be paid for by taxing the rich, taxing big business, taxing our children's future, credit, and other fiscal nonsense.
Now, ObamaCommie's chickens are coming home to roost! Government drones are multiplying like locusts, more freeloaders are moving in from Mexico, taxes are going up, inflation is going up, business and jobs are moving out. THE IDIOT WAS WRONG!
YOU LIBERAL DEMOCRATS HAVE GOT TO BE THE STUPIDEST MORONS EVER!

Thank you for posting this…I have it on my list of things to do today…
Bigger paychecks and critical thinking in one sentence. Hmmm…..OK grads, just one more SAT question:
Bigger paychecks are to illegal immigration as higher taxes and redistribution of wealth is to _______.
a. "free" healthcare for everyone but you
b. "free" college education for everyone but you
c. "free" housing, food and day care for everyone but you
d. all of the above
Never listen to someone that teaches a subject that ends with the word "studies."
Booing is not enough. They don't care if you boo. And they'll do what they want anyway–even if the majority of Americans disagree.
There must be a hurricane of demands that this woman be immediately removed. The demands must be constant, and they must not cease until she is gone and her program is defunded and eliminated.
TaxPAYers must innundate the university administrators with these demands. Show up at every meeting, write letters call local news editors, confront university officals in the parking lots, at the grocery, in their driveways. It must be an overwhelming effort that can not be denied.
Anything less is insufficient, and the lefties will continue to take your tax money and use it against you and your children to promote their ridiculous and dangerous ideas.
Those of us that think it's not that serious have to wake up. They're infecting our children, destroying our culture and stealing your earnings to do it.
Liberals are the same. Look at what they have done to California; they have thrashed it with their liberal/progressive laws. Now when even they can't take it anymore the liberals flee to surrounding states and start voting for the same kinds of stupidity that ran them out of California.
Liberalism is a mental disease; Albert Einstein's definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results – sounds a lot like liberalism.
Lol! I love it. However, it's sad and true.
Chew it back dude! I put up with this crap with teachers at the high schools where I have taught.
My knowledge in Women's Studies was obtained by "On-the-job-training." LOL!
I had to stop the video; I just couldn't listen to her inane prattle.
Well, she seems to hold all the qualifications for a professor in "higher edumacation": socialist/progressive – check, aggrieved member of a racial/ethnic minority – check, lesbian – check. Am I the only one who thinks that the average barrio dweller would duck and run from this tiresome woman as fast and as far as he or she could?
Minnie.

You so bad. That is just to awesome for word. Thanks, now I have to clean coffee and various sundries off my keyboard and monitor.
They already know they're absolutely right, so there's no reason to become educated. And if we can't see that, well that just proves how stupid we really are.
If you aks me they serve three purposes. First they give the educators an nice, safe cushy job with tenure. Second, think tanks for the left funded by taxes and tuition (a.k.a. other people's money) and third breeding ground for modern liberals too keep the racket going.
I'm a big Rush fan. I've been listening to him since before 9/11. Back then he's broadcasting things you would never hear anywhere else.
Now we've got the internet and the new alternative media. But back then I was hearing things I never would have dreamed existed.
That and I think he's one of the funniest entertainers in any industry.
You think modern liberals want students who can think for themselves?
'Why' is easy. Socialists and communists are parasites. They don't create, they wait till some one else has accomplished something, and then they swarm in and try to take it away from those who did create.
I like the term undocumented alien. That's like calling a drug dealer and undocumented pharmacist.
Worse than that, we're the ones paying via taxes. The joke is on us.

You have my deepest sympathies.
I ended up taking sociology for my elective. After about two classes, I realized it was all junk. If you ask me sociology is for people who are too lazy to take psychology.
Stop government funding for higher education and you'd see a real fast change real quick.
If students and families had to pay the entire tuition, schools would be forced to cut costs in order to survive, and these curriculums would be the first to go.
How about if its porn studies?
Very good points, there, EdSki!
The old days were golden, for sure. All the updates (he had me rolling on the floor) and the Paul Shanklin parodies. Incredible stuff, and I appreciate it so much, to have had it for my (and your) enjoyment.
There isn't much about Rush I don't like, and those are fairly minor points. As far as I'm concerned, he represents no threat whatever to the country, as the proggie crowd would have us believe. Far from it — He's been a real asset, in my view.
Have you heard the EIB Gospel Singers yet? First time I heard them I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.
Here's an acoustic version, not quite as good as the full choir, but it still gets the point across.
http://www.williamrains.com/rush_limbaugh.htm
That would be a statistical improbability of the highest order. One learns morals, ethics, skills and knowledge from the environment that they choose to surround themselves with. Surrounding yourself with 'professors' like this can guarantee a life of racially and politically structured blinders.
BTW, my statement earlier about "liberal arts' should have been called (as another poster here so accurately stated)…"Victim studies"
Throughout history, the profession and responsibility of being a teacher USED TO BE one of the greatest and most respected professions in the world.
I'd like to offer a clear-minded open invitation to solve the current problems with our "educational system".
1) raise the requirements for high school graduation.
2) eliminate "victim studies" from the current curriculum.
3) High School diplomas required for application and acceptance into the Federal Welfare system.
4) Drug tests required to continue receiving welfare benefits.
Those "Welfare-Lifers" will actually have to work hard, study hard and stay clean if they want my tax dollars. Granted, working hard and studying hard tend to have the uncanny ability of showing people what their personal potential is, making them far more capable of a good work ethic, and showing that they are capable of much more than they are currently. All of em. City or country, cold or warm, white or black, ALL OF EM.
True. It amazes me how much money the universities have in their coffers that do not go to the students. In my state, higher education has taken a hit with the state budget….for a democratic state it is not a good thing for them in the com9ing mid term elections….I am looking forward to it!
Yes, I have heard them. It's hilarious stuff!
Rush is just great. The best part is how he sends the proggies into orbit, they get so angry. That tickles the hell outta me.
Rossi expected to announce tomorrow he's running against Patty Murray – (per the Seattle Times today)
I was beginning to wonder if he was going to step up to the plate. I really like Clint Didier, but I worry about an eastsider making the grade. He is an excellent candidate…but I wonder if he has the financial backing. Rossi can…this I know! It will be exciting! Dick Morris sure brings it up all the time!
you can find out more go to dickmorris.com
lol
I stole your "victim arts" quote above. Hope you don't mind.
teach people how to exploit the system thereby guaranteeing their inclusion into said system. I'm glad I don't own a gun anymore. I'd cap my own ass, just so I don't have to witness what is coming.
[...] More here: » Morning Feel-Good Video: A Sneering Lefty Professor Gets Booed … [...]
Huh. I wonder why this twit neglected to mention that the 'Chicano studies' she teaches and is so fearful of the new law to put a stop to it includes things like asserting that California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and parts of Utah and Colorado were 'stolen' from Mexico; that Mexicans are derived from the Aztlan people, forebears of Aztecs, and are superior race; that borders are imaginary and therefore to be ignored; that white capitalist America is oppressing Mexico and all of Latin America, and that capitalism is responsible for their misery and makes them victims, etc etc etc. They make their programs sound so benign, but they are rotten to the core and are not educating, and certainly not teaching 'critical thinking', unless it is currently defined as any thought critical of the US, capitalism and liberty as we know it.
You said it.
Oh. That's not her sharp anti-feminine hair helmet?
I'd been thinking about starting a "Men's Studies" program at a local university, but then I realized I'm already a man, and women are a lot more interesting.
Exactly – we're no longer taught HOW to think. We're taught WHAT to think.
Exactly. Two thumbs up!
Thank you for this. It's been a long time since I've read any of Mr. Heinlein's personal essay work. It's really amazing what today's educational system has turned into.
I dearly miss reading his stories.
