Is this the Boston Globe’s “Dewey Defeats Truman” moment? (See Big Journalism’s header, above, for the memorable Chicago Tribune goof.)
The Hub’s ultra-liberal broadsheet today “inadvertently” posted an interactive election-results dummy on its website, boston.com — which, amazingly, forecast a Coakley victory.

Queried by the Boston Phoenix, the city’s alternative newspaper, a spokesman for the Globe replied:
AP was testing an election data feed to its Massachusetts clients. During corresponding tests at our end, the feed of AP’s hypothetical test data was inadvertently posted for a few minutes on a single subsection page within our site. As soon as the error was discovered, it was removed. We regret the mishap.
Take a look at the “mishap” for yourself from these screen shots.

The polls close tonight at 8 o’clock.

At least this happened way too early to be believed unlike calling Florida for Gore while the polls were still open in the panhandle.
I wonder, will that be the same graphic that is posted tonight? Is it a foregone conclusion, and is that going to be the "official" tally?
Gotta luv the established MSM. They keep making fools out of themselves quicker than can be reported on.
Related: check out Malkin's page where she has a video of a Coakley supporter handing out absentee ballots today. (Perhaps it's relevant to point out that absentee voting closed on Jan. 15): http://michellemalkin.com/2010/01/19/massachusett...
Seriously?? Of course, if they're hoping to turn away the uninformed voter, they'll only succeed in turning away those people they want voting FOR Coakley…
The Boston Globe must of gotten its hands on Polosi's stash and is smokin away. The only way for Coakley to win is if ARORN shows up with truck loads of absentee ballots all in favor of Martha, all signed by three people in the back of Martha campaign HQ's.
Let the Democrat criminality begin…these socialists will NOT leave this vote to chance – and to the voters of Massschusetts – they WILL try to Frankenvote the results…
Three hours to go people – defeat this woman!
They're trying….
You gotta know that the RATS will do whatever it takes to win. Brown never had a chance. With their convuleted thinking, a vote for Brown will end up in the RAT column…
This is Great…will bring out all the Scott Brown supporters…keep home all the Coakley supporters…GO SCOTT…GO TO WASHINGTON
Yup. Its the right that knows what's going on. Silly MSM.
WTF…Why am I not surprised. I posted before I went to bed last night that while watching FOX last night with my girlfriend I hoped there would not be a "Dewey defeats Truman" moment.
I just couldn't help but get a feeling in my gut as I watched how calm Beckel was on Hannity last night. He was being very calm and quiet as they discussed what was being reported as a 5 point lead for Brown in one of the polls.
Rich, I saw that video earlier this morning and that didn't surprise me one bit.
I am going to remain optimistic as there is still 3:45 remaining before the polls close. That provides an opportunity for all of the working folk who are going to have to pay for Chairman Obamao's programs to send a strong message on behalf of the REAL PATRIOTS throughout the country.
I wonder how many subscriptions will be cancelled today. Bye, bye, Boston Globe.
Who would know better than the Boston Globe what was already decided by the Mass Machine?
If you consider the vote counts in the screenshot, you'll notice that Kennedy recieved exactly 1% of the vote. I think with this in mind, the explanation that the results were a test is quite reasonable, though they should try to avoid having active links to a test site.
And besides, we all know Brown is going to win easily, right?
What they forgot to note was that all the producers (aka conservatives, aka those with real jobs, aka responsible people) in Mass are still at work and won't be hitting the polls till now.
I have used the local newspaper to line my bird's cage – he's a real nice parrot and smart, too. Learned a lot of words. Anyway, the other day I used a section of the Boston Globe. The parrot refused to poop! I was afraid for his health. When I asked him why, he offered this one word reply, "Redundant." A sense of humor, too.
Fun with math: add up the total for Brown and Kennedy, then compare that sum to Coakley's total.
Such a close election it wasn't!
From one who lives 35 miles from Boston (living in NH, Live Free or Die) the globe is 10x worse than MSNBC. Believe it. You think Olberdouche is bad? get a gov't handout and use the money for a globe subscription. I guarantee your parrot won't even use it to crap on.
That's funny, Mikey. Poor bird-must've been very intimidating.
lol u beat me to it! too funny!
To a liberal mind…this is fair!
Good point!
That could have given the left enough cover to stall his seating and let the dems cram Obamacare down our throats.
That's what happens when they lay off the technical people who do the real work, in favor of the politically correct people who add no value.
I've seen it dozens of times in corp. world. It just causes the entire project to circle the drain even faster.
Well if you believe this then back years ago Al Gore would have been our president. What do you expect from a far left newspaper like the Boston Globe.. I think they need to wait until all the numbers are in but when you are in the pocket of the progressives and the liberals then this is not a surprise one bit.
And you wonder why the Globe filed for bankruptcy? Sam Adams is rolling in his grave!
Tobe fair, they might have just pulled something out a file and just changed the names.
Two weeks ago who would have expected a race at all?
I've run web sites in the past, and still do one for my church. Agreed, it could be a perfectly valid excuse. They might have drawn up the test screen a couple of weeks ago.
But if they did, why give Brown 49% instead of like 35%
the obama myth is finally over! obama is not GOD, obama is not the messiah, obama is merely a joke, an empty suit, and like slick willy clinton, a has-been unable to lie to us anymore. . .
Newsflash from the Globe: Coakley beats Truman! Woohoo!
as much as we all would like to see a conservative take that seat, a seat who's occupant for 47 years has done more to damage this country than any other senate seat, the cheaters are very powerful in Mass. and will not likely let that happen.
They will edit the pic just a little so they are not the same and they can lie more.
acorn crisis response teams are in haiti right now. cruising the mass graves with voter registration forms.
Now they have announced that the democrats are handing out premarked ballots to people.
Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAIYOntogJs&fe... and listen VERY CLOSELY to what Coakley says between the 30-40 second mark. She says and I quote "We won't know until the votes are CODED er, um, counted…" If Brown doesn't win, you can't help but feel this whole process is rigged.
Only commie lib Haaaaaaaaaarvard idiot profs read the BG. And they get the non profit university to pay for their subscription.
Your parrot seems infinitely more qualified than the poser we now have. Just one question.
Does your bird have papers? If so, he is more qualified to be POTUS.
[...] of what I predicted earlier.. Boston Globe Posts Election ‘Results’ Eight Hours Before Polls Close… and Coakley… Quarter of Massachusetts voters expect ACORN to try to steal Senate seat for Coakley | Washington [...]
Why does Massachusetts in the state picture remind one of the Hockey Stick graph? The Globe got a plug into a nifty little program that cranks out a Coakley win no matter what data (votes) are put into it?
The detail – town by town is astonishing – and thus disturbing …. so REAL.
Unfortunately, he was born in Brazil. No, make that Hawaii! Yeah, that's the ticket! I have proof…..must be in the other room.
I wonder what it must feel like to know that so many people distrust you when you are supposed to be a news source?I guess liars and cheats don't let a guilty conscience bother them.
As a former news manager, I can verify that AP does indeed test their system prior to election night. HOWEVER, they also send out repeated warnings to editors and news managers that the results are a test and NOT to distribute them. Someone fell down on the job.
They must be using data from the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia.
Also in the news, biggovernment.com readers literally fucking retarded.
That is a smart sales gimmick for a jaded rag. They can't get anyone to buy paper for its perniscious content so they are creating a collector's item. Just like the Truman election half a century ago.
All one has to do is get signatures, turn back the time on the postage stamp, and claim the ballots were lost or whatever. Any Acorn judge in Mass. would gladly let the votes be counted.
They are telling half the truth. It is true that AP tests their Election Wire system prior to election night. HOWEVER, AP also sends out repeated warnings to editors and news managers notifying them of the test and making clear that the test should not be reported. So basically, someone seriously fell down on their job.
Applause for whoever nabbed the screenshot!
I HOPE ALL THE BOSTON GLOBE SUBSCRIBERS WILL BE CANCELLING THEIR SUBSCRIPTIONS TOMORROW! CERTAINLY BOSTONIANS CAN FIND A BETTER SOURCE FOR THEIR NEWS!
Maybe the Globe has a contract with the CRU East Anglia, to collate the data from the ACORN Mass. playbook.
Make no mistake, this year is NOT about "hearts and minds", it IS about "souls" and who ultimately takes them…
Sorry, that should be "booze, broads, and power and wealth I don't have to work for."
Sorry for the typo. It's been a long day.
Oh Yeah? So tell me how it is that AP came up with this particular result to run their TEST with???? Hmmmm.
Actually the live page looks pretty good, and matches up well to numbers on Drudge. Here's the link: http://www.boston.com/news/politics/2010/senate_r...
OMG I think we just crashed BG!
DAVID GERGEN IS MY HERO.
they have lost their ever livin' minds. me likey!
It's gotta hurt that this isn't true. At all. I mean, the Boston Globe sort of just lost all credibility there.
HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA! This is great! Did they act "stupidly"? Looks like it.
Does the Boston Globe give random drug tests? If not, after this they definitely should!
This can't be good for your credibility!
Just shows you how useless and biased the MSM is.
As you're sipping your coffee in the morning, don't take for granted what you realized today, which by then, will be yesterday!!!!!! Tomorrow begins a whole new battle, every day is important in the war for freedom!!! Years transforms into history frequently, like clockwork, regardless of the mood!!!!! The next Election is on the horizon, be prepared, your future is not their choice, it is yours!!!!!!!!!!
Another biased rag bites the dirt!
You guys are doing sooooo much for Fox and Conservative Blogs
Thank you!!!
Dewey beats Truman!
Way to call this one!
DOH!
To be fair this takes the "odd" out of shoddy journalism and replaces such with "itt".
In Boston? It would seem they'd shed a tear of joy for the Globe giving them at least a wisp of hope.
I haven't read all 67 comments, but has anyone asked the question why they were testing an election reporting system on election day? This would be the height of stupidity for any IT project manger, but to be expected by today's dumbshite media.
Mishap my ass. They just can't spell defeated!
Please, Pinchy Sulzberger would sink the last dime he had to keep the SF Chronicle and the Globe from dying, just to get the Progressive agenda out there one more day.
All I want is what Ted Kennedy wanted.
Booze, bronze and inherited power and wealth I don't have to work for…
More fun with math – Coakley actually received about 22,000 more votes than their test plot predicted – but Brown received about 150,000 more than forecast. The distribution is funny – some counties shown here as deep red actually went pale blue & vice versa. I don't know if this test plot was generated from an actual forecast of county results or if a statewide turnout number was just "sprinkled" across the state.
I will NEVER FORGET Dan Rather – after CBS showed off a new, better, "special" election night computer – saying "We want you to know, what we'll be giving you tonight are not 'projections', instead we will be telling you what we think we know right now". What's the difference? I think CBS planned to compare its exit polling against pre-election surveys (which all pointed Democrat)… when the two agreed, they could quickly predict that state to the Democrat, but when they disagreed, no prediction could be made. I think this method was designed to get as much blue on the eastern map as soon as possible, to influence the western voters. Granted, this was the Clinton v Dole election, which honestly wasn't even newsworthy. Still, when media asks itself "how will we cover this?", the only acceptable answer is "honestly, fairly, impartially", and the next question MUST be "What do you hope to achieve by changing your methods?"
Wow, imagine that! They were wrong and out of touch with the mainstream voters in Mass. Whodathunk that?
Has anyone told the editors of the Globe yet that Coakley LOST?! It's 10:40 pm in Boston.
YOU LIE!!! as usual.
I wish I could give you multiple thumbs-up.
:p
Well, most of the quotes in Coakley's negative compaign came from the Globe so no surprise there. Signed by anonymous.
Agreed. It still makes them look pretty bad, which ain't good when you're in the business of always being right.
The orphan angle sounds pretty good.
I mean, how much would it have cost to fix them ears and if there are other mouths to feed…
[...] the sale, the people weren’t fooled. The Boston Globe went so far as to publish a map that showed pre-poll-closing results depicting Coakley winning. Of course, they were trapped, and [...]
I moved from Boston to Florida 3 years ago, and for the first time, I wished I was back there—but only for the day of the eelction and a few days to enjoy the aftermath. This "mishap" is a window into the liberal elites of media, academia, and politics: they aren;t driven by reality, but by desire. Let them keep spinning right out of office and right out of business!
An already discredited newspaper loses what's left of its credibility… which wasn't much. GO Boston Globe; you and the NYT are still good for two things: covering bird-cage bottoms and wrapping dead fish.
love your website
That’s stunning and very nicely written.Usually I don’t make a comment on the internet, but I have to say that this post really forced me to do so. Really quality bit of insight
