MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann broke from his self-described pattern of not offering commentary, and called for an end to the media’s self-imposed editorial silence concerning the U.S. government’s response to a terrible natural disaster.
Okay, it was a different disaster during a different administration. But did you hear what he said? A week into the Hurricane Katrina recovery he declared that,
But now, at last, it has stopped getting exponentially worse…and having given our leaders what we now know is the week or so they need to get their acts together, that period of editorial silence I mentioned should come to an end.
As the chaos of recovery efforts in and around New Orleans became the big story, old media commentators fired barrages of harsh rhetoric toward President Bush and members of his administration directly involved with disaster relief. Never mind what part of that criticism was justified, and what part was driven by political preferences. It was a blend.
We even heard a commentator accuse Bush of racism – “the big elephant in the room” in the commentator’s words.
We’re now in the midst of another disaster, albeit not within the borders of the United States. But Haiti is a close neighbor; many American citizens were in Haiti when it shook apart; many American citizens have relatives living there who are dead or missing. The U.S. is overwhelmingly the dominant provider of international aid. President Obama, when a candidate, often quoted the Bible verse that summons us to be our brother’s keeper. So how well is our brother’s keeping going with regard to USAID’s effort in Haiti?
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow asked the key question:
Who do the marching orders come from?
The disaster response effort in Haiti, with the U.S. effort led by USAID, may be providing a new paradigm of international relief chaos. And as a consequence, people are dying, just as they always do in natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes and tornadoes and wildfires and cyclones and volcanic eruptions. Building codes and high construction standards can ameliorate the damage — if this quake had struck California, the death toll would likely have been in the hundreds, not the hundreds of thousands — but in the end Mother Nature will have her way, and there’s not much presidents, potentates, prime ministers, or Nobel Prize laureates can do about it, except the best they can.
So when will Keith Olbermann announce, on behalf of the legacy media, that it’s time to offer an editorial assessment of how well the disaster response has been going? When will the MSM realize there is no magic bullet that can pre-empt, much less instantly solve, seismic dislocations, and that in the end the Earth is far more powerful than Man, Albert Arnold Gore, Jr., to the contrary notwithstanding?
Or, is the elephant in this disaster room an old media that’s more concerned about not appearing critical of the Obama Administration than it is about the fate of our neighbors, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters in Haiti?
Not quite as easy as it looked back in 2005 is it, Keith? Or is the explanation simply racism, Jack?
We look forward to your next special commentaries.

KATRINA HAPPENED ON U.S. SOIL, GENIUS
Anything to distract from this:

This sleazy dim-bulb got caught committing a federal offense and if he ends up in a prison with a black population, he's as good as dead after the "sistas" have their way with the little pansy for a while. Or…they can grant him immunity and let him rat out the Right-wing mafia thugs that put him up to it. Then let California AG and ACORN pick away at what's left of the little punk.
And the first respondsers should've been the city, county and state governments, 'tard.
Obama doesn't care about poor black people!
Where's Kanye when you need him!!!!
Chirp.
Keith Olbermann is busy with his man crush on Bill O'Reilly.
Yeah, where's Oprah? Where's her pal Julia Roberts?
Or perhaps he can lawyer up and keep his mouth shut, which ACORN failed to do. The Feds have little to prosecute him with. This isn't Watergate yet.
When has it ever been the job of the federal government to specifically remove people from a Cat 5 hurricane who are too dumb to leave themselves? FEMA is, by its acronym, a post-disaster organization, it responds to disasters it doesn't prevent them.
Bush might have been clueless and too slow in offering moral support, but there was little else he or the fed. govt could do or should be required to do. People need to take care of themselves and others, and most of the relief work that actually accomplished anything was done by volunteers, NOT government officials.
Yeah, we jumped in our time machines, went back to a week ago, and fired up our magic earthquake machine to distract everyone from OKeefe getting busted.
You got a point…don't want to convict him without his day in court or I'll start sounding like most people on these websites who convicted ACORN of all sorts of absurd crimes that they never even were charged with. Still…the fear of these pink-team pansies being put in a Louisiana federal prison with probably one of the meanest black populations in our country…gonna be singing like Rosemary Clooney!!!
Not quite as easy as it looked back in 2005 is it, Keith? Or is the explanation simply racism, Jack?
And without question the agency governed by the Orleans Levee Board, the Orleans Levee District, had zero responsibility. They had bigger concerns than making sure a city below sea level should have adequate protection…like Cold Cash. Really really Cold Cash.
How about them 2000 buses? The Federal Government didn't have jurisdiction.
GENIUS.
Stop looking to the govt to be your God. They are not the savior. Their primary purpose under the Constitution is to make war, not save citizens from rising flood waters. Look , it was a tragedy to be sure and I feel for anyone who suffered, but before you move into a house, check a map to see if it is in a flood plane or below sea level. Just because it has been dry for 100 years does not mean it will stay that way for ever.
In the words of Ronald Reagan "As govt expands…Liberty contracts" Americans have to get back to self sufficiency. What will you do during the next disaster, when the lights go out and there is no more grocery store to run to for food. Will you be able to protect and provide for your family or will you lay in the street and cry for the govt to save you?
We lost our home in Hurricane Andrew in Miami in 1992 and I can tell you that the US President, Clinton, was NOT accused of racism or otherwise excoriated by the crazy biased media for a number of reasons: Prevention of extensive damage calls for PRE-Hurricane evacuation and contingency plans–a primarily LOCAL function. We were warned ad nauseum by local authorities who had to get out days in advance even though the situation was iffy as to where the eye would land. After the hurricane, hurricane relief is first and foremost assessing damage and getting the right crews to the right places, again a LOCAL function. You can't reach people so fast if your roads are flooded and impassable or if your roads are, as was the case with Miami in 1992, not flooded but covered with trees and debris and impassable. Miami was led by Republicans and the governor at the time, Jeb Bush, was Republican. They were well coordinated and I recall Clinton coming in more like a figurehead to offer help after the fact. Think about this everyone when you think of how Bush got condemned for what happened in New Orleans and ask yourselves what was going on LOCALLY in New Orleans and in Haiti, before and after. Haiti is a hellhole of corruption and poverty. People have torn their mountainsides' trees down just for needed fuel. The people didn't cause an earthquake through a pact with the devil but the devil is definitely part of the LOCAL picture. The sick politicians on the Left need to stop politicizing natural disasters. They're puke material.
Maybe you and Keith Olbermann can lay in the street and cry together.
This blog post is a week old?
Sorry, typo on Clinton in my prior comment. Edited out a prior sentence too fast.
Julia Roberts looked like a bag lady on the recent celebrity telethon.
Your mom says it's time to get off the computer and do your homework. Your grades are not indicative of a bright child. Not at all.
Right On!!! Straight Ahead!!!
Frank, Olbermann is way ahead of you. if you watched Countdown last night you would have seen a long uncomplimentary segment on the failure of the aid effort in Haiti thus far.
Honestly, I'm embarrassed for Olbermann detractors. If you don't care to watch the show yourselves, you ought at least to have someone who DOES watch it check your blogs for errors big enough to drive a truck through, before you upload them.
Whenever republicans are in office and something doesn't go right, the media loads and looses both barrels. When democrats are in office and things don't go quite right the media says … that job is so haaarrrd, and we are trying really haarrrd
This is off topic but really part of the huge wave of dissention against Obarfa worldwide, even in the country of his roots:
" Indonesia mulls tearing down Obama statue
(AFP) – 1 day ago
JAKARTA — Indonesian authorities said Monday they are considering a petition to tear down a statue of US President Barack Obama as a boy, only a month after the bronze was unveiled in Jakarta.
The statue of "Little Barry" — as Obama was known when he lived in the capital in the late 1960s — stands in central Jakarta's Menteng Park, a short walk from the US president's former elementary school.
Critics say the site should have been used to honour an Indonesian and 55,000 people have joined a page on social networking website Facebook calling for the statue to be removed."
Gotta love it!!

Oops, sorry for the inadvertent re-post of the clip.
Anyway, I hope you all saw from the video that Olbermann is watching this situation and reporting it in as much detail as he did Katrina.
Embarrassment for Olbermann seems an appropriate enough response, but I prefer Jon Stewart's humorous take on a fairly typical Olbermann name-calling rant.
Speaking of being his brother's keeper, has old BO sent HIS bro–the one living in the shack–$50 for his birthday yet? Oh, yeah–he'd have to know WHEN HIS BROTHER'S BIRTHDAY IS to do that. I won't read his Dreams of my Father (or whatever) book, but his dad's dreams must have included fathering children on as many continents with as many women or girls as possible. They certainly didn't include RAISING any of the brood.
and there was a MANDATORY EVACUATION ORDER that was IGNORED by 99% of the VICTIMS.
Media driven hysterics for pure partisan political gain…
Oh, I feel so much better…now I can die happy.
Just thought you'd like to know, that's all. Since the blog is called Big Journalism, I assumed there was a preference for accuracy here.
Mac, I did watch it. DId you? If you did, then tell me who Keith tagged with responsibility for not being able to distribute the food. The UN who Senator Obama proposed in suggested in the Global Poverty Act of 2007 be responsible for distributing 850 billion dollars of US aid over a 13 year period? USAID? (The answer is no there, Mac.) In fact, he simply reported an event, as he should have. No editorializing. He made my point.
Mac, yea Mac, but without the editorializing. You do see that, right?
Did you see the expression on his face, though, Fred? As a long-time viewer I can tell you that's the look he gets when a Special Comment (now Quick Comment) is getting close…..
yeah……he doesn't see himself as BLACK……..he's a mixed breed……. that…… in his mind……….. is mostly — white.
that was his upbringing in Hawaii, mostly raised by his white grandparents….. thus his inner most introspective search for his history in Kenya never revealed where he truly was born……………………… Obama knows he doesn't want to be black, if he can avoid it….
did you just say Keith might be gay??? I agree……he seems like he's always looking for the rear entry debate……….
his arguments always smell like crap……….
Fred, pls see my reply to you downthread, @ your other comment.
Fu*k keith olberman, rachel maddow, and chris matthews!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, you must be one of the three people who actually MSNBC
Wow, you can toss an insult but not address the argument. We all know who the dunce is here. Wanna tell us how I was wrong or you just wanna slink away ashamed?
This is one guy at the helm with a handful of others. How moany guvment leeches and crooks does ACORN have? How many crooks, communists, and tax cheats did BO appoint or try to appoint? I'm talking crooks, cheats, thugs, and commies taking tax money and your talking a few guys striking out on their own. That's apples and oranges, DUFUS. I hope they all get a off just as slick and clean as the Black Panthers got off for intimidating voters with a bat. Oh yeah-Holder–there's another liberal slime ball.

COMMIE THUGS I TELL YA WHUT
Inthemiddle,
George H.W. Bush was elected president in 1988. He was inaugurated January 20, 1989, and served as president until 12:00 p.m. January 20, 1993. Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992. He was inaugurated at 12:00 p.m. January 20, 1993.
Hurricane Andrew happened during 1992. George H.W. Bush was president.
George Bush steered that hurricane to hit the poor people of New Orleans. He created chaos so that they would not evacuate the area. He held a gun to the head of state and local authorities so that they would act in complete incompetence. George Bush is the devil! Obama is the “annointed one”!
For nearly fifty years Americans have watched on television as every problem, no matter how complex and vast, has been solved in one hour or less…with time out for commercials. The TV media, and our people, have no patients for the mundane , the uneventful, or the tedious . In fact, Haiti has about had its' 15 minutes with the America public.
Haiti is, and likely will always be, a poor and dependant place. It really isn't a nation at all. All of the good intentions and sympathy and money will be swallowed up and disappear with little if any effect on those poor souls. But, it helps some people assuage their grief… or whatever. So, give all you want , but excuse me if I pass.
Which is probably why he wrote:
"We’re now in the midst of another disaster, albeit not within the borders of the United States."
The disaster in Haiti is actually about two weeks old. There have been a number of posts on the topic since then, calls for aid, commentary on how it's going… and noting how the press is treating it very differently from other disasters in recent history.
So coming into a posting about a topic that's a couple of weeks old and bringing up something that just happened today actually makes it look like the one attempting to distract is… you. But then, projection is a common fault amongst weasels like yourself so it really isn't surprising. Heck, as soon as I saw glimpses of the topic I knew you'd be doing your level best to take advantage of the situation, regardless of what facts may come out in the future. It's in your nature, little zampolit.
There's a thread over on Big Government regarding this, I think you already found it. Stay there.
Here's why clear-thinking people knew Haiti was a train wreck waiting to happen: The Obama Administration is rife with people in positions of power that are in WAY over their heads. The problem with political cronyism is that someday, you just might be asked to earn the free paycheck you're getting… From Napolitano to Jennings to Now, The head of the disaster recovery team is Hillary Clinton… and her qualifications are what? telling minions to F'off? How about hiring some truly qualified experts into positions of serious responsibility?
What? You care about Haiti?
I'll say this much, this website did post links to aid Haiti which was nice. I have ZERO interest in hacks politicizing Haiti to score Right-wing points. Sorry.
I love the fact that Liberals like you are now going on and on about O'Keefe now but had nothing to say about ACORN and their scandals. While no one even knows anything other than the barest minimum of facts about Okeefe you are ready to send him to jail but defended ACORN and claimed their wasn't anything wrong with what we all saw on those tapes. The fact they were never charged had more to do with politics that it did right or wrong. Oh BTW look at the blog right above this one, I swear Libs have got to be the blindest humans on the planet they see only what they want to see to the exclusion of everything else including reality.
ACORN was never arrested by Federal Marshals like this punk was. Move along…nothing to see here. Go grab your ACORN Derangement Syndrome wooby and hang on tight because unlike you limp-minded ghetto fabs, we don't prosecute on right-wing talking points. This kid a getting "GOD-SMACKED" and it's going to be awesome!!!
Their primary purpose is to make war??? God, you are so stupid that if you had half a brain your head would hang sideways!! Bet your a good Christian!!
You have a hemorrhoid where your brain should be.
Yes but this kid was seen on video in ACORN offices, talking and taping ACORN people so naturally he is guilty of anything you can come up with off the top of your head.
Trust no one…
You might wish to stop projecting your own habits upon the people you hate.
Most who stayed in New Orleans stayed there to loot after the storm had passed and got caught with their pants down.
Actually Keith might play for both teams. He doesn't only have a obsession with Bill-o, he's got them with Sarah Palin and Congresswoman Michelle Bachman. And Developing one for both Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter.
He's just shy.
The same Keith Olbermann who's "research" consists of nothing more than re-reading press releases from "media matters"?
Clearly, Bush and Cheney are still secretly operating the Haliburton made Universal Disaster Machine to cause havoc throughout the world. Everything is their fault.

Does anyone think Olbermann or Maddow will have anything to say when all that relief money and aid fail to show up in Haiti? Didn't think so……..
I taught school for many years and have heard enough childish name calling to last a lifetime. I prefer broadcasters who do not delight in personal attacks and stick to the issues.
So let's just let them suffer and die! That would take care of the problem! Nice solution. (facetious.)
He proves that with the way he treats the poor members of his own family!
Wow Mac, thanks for sharing the Olbermann video clip featuring his blistering rant against …what?! Better watch before you post next time.
DEAR MR OLBERMAN,
Please be certain to always wear a condom as we would saddened to find one of your sodomite friends gave you the HIV or clap – and please remain a part of the gay community in which you live – I don't feel the World could deal with another generation of humans cursed with your DNA amongst them.
FUBO and FUKO
"President Obama, when a candidate, often quoted the Bible verse that summons us to be our brother’s keeper." I'm from Massachusetts, does that include aunts?
Evening, colored incorrect information, specially from the major news corperations with the big slants to the left or right. Did you see last nights Red Eye? haha, that was rediculous! Sorry, I am rambling along over again. Have a Good day!
So right, Phil. Many Libertards are also unaware of a couple of things.
1- Mississippi was hit just as hard as Louisiana, but took the necessary steps for recovery right away without waiting for federal government assistance. (may have something to do with the fact that Mississippi is a conservative state and believes in personal responsibility)
2- The federal government was denied initial access by the local Louisiana government in the beginning.
But these facts get in the way of their ranting.
Enjoyed this post. Thanks for posting it.
