Never, in my wildest dreams could I have dreamed this up!
The hits just keep on rolling in. They are too busy to report real news, or apologize for misleading or erroneous stories, but they sure pay attention to the menu. I truly wonder, exactly how many people at NBC even know what collard greens are? Whoever is making decisions at NBC, really ought to be writing for Saturday Night Live!
Does this mean if someone now makes a watermelon joke, or a reference to Ripple, that they would be branded a racist?
SHUT UP O"KEEFE IS A HITLER RACIST OR SOMETHING!@#!!!!
OMG!!! The Denver public school system did the same thing (another liberal run failing school system):
Friday's DPS lunch menu, headlined "In Honor Of M.L. King," offered students "Southern Style" chicken and collard greens — a meal that some say is an offensive caricature of black culture.

Fore Left!!!
What no Watermelon!…These NBC Swines should put their faces in you know what but they lost their faces a long time ago.
I despise NBC just as much as anyone here, but have we done adequate fact-checking for this one?
Let me guess for the 5th of May………
In honor of Cinco de Mayo, NBC will be offering the Fajita's Especiale', refried beans, a bottle of Cerveza and flan for desert…………………..
Follow the source link. This comes from Questlove the house band leader for The Roots (the house band on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon)

16 oz. grape soda?
The liberals/racist will never follow MLK's dream
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. "
This is why we have Pres Obama today, they judged him by his color and not his character !!!
I thought it was cinco de quatro-oh wait a minute that was the President…
The absurdity in all this is that fried chicken, collards, snap beans, corn bread, Co-Cola and, yes, watermelon are all part of standard traditional Southern po'-folk eatin': by BOTH races.
This sign and or the intent are not racist. Any more than serving Guinness or Harp infused meals on Saint Patricks day is racist. Do the Irish like Guinness? Yes. Do all Irish people drink Guinness? No. Would I be offended if on March 17th McDonalds had a Shamrock shake? No, and they do.
Who exactly is hurt by a stereotype pointing out that Blacks like fried chicken or the Irish like Guinness. Nobody….Be careful of turning everything into PC terms, it always gets used as a bludgeon against Conservatives first, while the left is off the hook. Refuse to be PC and don't throw stones just use these examples for defense.
Why are even celebrating Cinco De Mayo? The idiot Marxists seem to want to celebrate everything but Christmas. And sorry if this sounds racist why do we need a month for Black History? They can't even teach the history of the founding fathers in school but we Have to have a month for Black History or is it African American History. But if you are white and born in Africa and move here and become a citizen aren't you an African American? And if you are black and born in Detroit you are an African American? What is you are black and born in Cuba. This PC crap is confusing.
What’s with the smoked turkey?
Yum! I bet NBC could make up some real good collards? Don’t forget the pepper sauce…ha!
It's like all the streets named after MLK run through the black neighborhoods. Rename a major street after the man.
OMG that is priceless!!! LOL! The chef that came up with the idea is black. She has obviously moved on from the racist victim mentality and has joined the human race. Others need to catch up with her.
I'm from the south and had anything like that been posted around here it would have made the front page with the lawyers fighting for first place in the lawsuit line.
Yep. I've got a pot of collards an' fatback leftovers in the icebox. And I'm as white as the driven-on snow.
Hell, in this day and age, you cain't even say "poke chops and greens" anymore without getting someone mad.
So do you think this menu is indicative of black culture throughout the US? I am guessing that many affluent blacks no longer maintain this style of eating and as such it would be a stereo type.
Just one more thought if Rush L. had asked if this was the menu for the white house on MLK day would that have been racist?
Ya know, I've been a thinkin'……..
Since James O'Keefe protested Lucky Charms Cereal on behalf of all that was Holy and Irish, he ought amble on over to NBC and order a fried chicken dinner and collards………..
This is ridiculous. A black woman was the chef who created the menu, after eight years of begging to be allowed to cook something nicer for Black History Month than what she's usually allowed to cook. This is what she likes to make and eat herself, so she thought others might enjoy it too. It's a popular menu all around the country, particularly in the South, after all. She's upset and horrified by the reaction she's getting, which, for good reason, she didn't expect. There's nothing racist about it.
Though the comments are right, if FNC had a menu like this, people would be screaming for its destruction.
On the contrary, I would beg to differ with you. There is a DOUBLE STANDARD, and therein lies the racism. That is the issue in and of itself. You said it yourseld, "……..if FNC had a menu like this, people would be screaming for its destruction." How then, could FNC not have this menu; while it is ok for NBC to have it?
Hahaha! I've been making that short month joke for years, so it's good to finally find someone else with a similar sense of humor.
On a serious note, I really agree with the argument about having "White" stuff labels. I have never understood how having BET or the NAACP helps solve race issues. I mean I always thought that the purpose of groups like these were to try to bring equality between races, but just by having these labels gives the impression that they have no intention of making things right. My stance on groups like this has always been, why would they fight so hard for integration when they use groups like these to segregate themselves back out? All these groups do is continue to try and make sure that people are always divided by race(i.e. why make it a point to point out someone's race if your trying to bring people together?)
I suppose this is supposed to be ethnic food to the racist asshats at NBC. As I look at the menu I only see the down home southern food I grew up with (sans the Aquafina), which everyone eats regardless or race. What a bunch of dufus jerkeys!
That's too funny… I must've been doing alot of painting when this happened because I missed the Lucky Charms story. Is there video of this anywhere? <edit> found it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qh3WUnFiEJ4
LOL! LOL! the poor woman taking notes! LOL!!! Magically Delicious!!
Man, I am white as paste and I love Chicken!
WTF dies that have to do with being solely black?
It happens that I am also Irish, but I don't go givin' you the 'monkey eye' when you're eating a potato.
Can't we all just get-a -long, and pass the bucket?
I'd have to say everybody and not just us poor folks.
Insensitive racist bastards! Where is the watermelon?
Can't help but wonder what they serve on Cinco de Mayo, or the anniversary of the Tet Offensive.
What a bunch of dick noses.
Betcha they don't eat corned beef and cabbage for New Year's Day.
Off your Clozapine again?
Actually, to be fair, the school where I taught in Atlanta would have a "Soul Food" potluck for the teachers in honor of Black History Month. It's no big deal; and to be honest, that's simply country cookin' like people all over the South and the Appalachians have been eating for years. It's not just black, it's simply good country food.
Beat me to it…
Def do, esp in projects here in NJ
Yes.
Here is part two of the Rutgers "Lucky Charms" plot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk6XCkFy1vA&fe...
I believe that is where O'keefe got his start. It shows the absolute absurdity of political correctness run amok. The lady made them turn the recorder off in the second segment.
Now then, following along those lines, and using that logic, O'keefe should do an undercover expose' at "HOOTERS", protesting the discrimination of flat chested gals. Now that, would prove "totally tacky, yet unrefined"…………
I reckon they cain't call me a racist no mo'.
I be lovin' dat fried yard bird, with da collards.
I really loves the fried okra, and for special occasions, we even have fried pickles.
Of course, I love "poke chops" just as well.
St. Patricks Day.
Or Lucky Charms Cereal.
Priceless!! Yeah, the PC disease needs a good dunking. But I'd have to say hands off of HOOTERS. Is nothing sacred?!?
Wanna see something funny? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGrqW3nx5HM
This clown from Shreveport, LA takes himself seriously. (yes, himself)
I am a white person from the south and that food is just as associated with my culture as black culture. It's delicious stuff. I hate that even food is censored. It's all about the context anyway.
Eat up, NBC peeps. You won't get these good vittles next year.
Wow!
That was hilarious!
That shows what is wrong with folks today, we can't laugh at ourselves witout somebody getting insulted.
Hands off Hooters!
Nice pun!…………………….
Oops, I made the exact same point immediately after you. I was raised on all that food. This is what all the highly successful soul food restaurants in NYC serve with references back to the South, not just black culture.
Yep
Don't I know it. I LOVE real fried chicken, collard greens (with vinegar), black eyed peas, mac and cheese, and watermelon. Basically it's poor people's food, but damn it's good.
No okra or chitterlins
It is so silly to be upset about this. I live in the South and it all sounds delicious……only suggestion I would have is to add okra.
Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol
I'll have the Smoked turkey with the pea's… and ummmmm the water I guess.
Check please!
" Imagine if Fox News had done this"
Yes, we'd be saying lighten up for cripes sake!
And that's exactly what we should be doing now.
Good grief!
And some of us are. Like we pointed out- this is just country- cookin' . Maybe some of those Damn Yankees in NYC NBC will appreciate REAL food.
At least they picked a short month……….
On a serious note, I want to know why there isn't a White History Month, or a "WET" (White Entertainment Television)?
Can we please get off of this politically correct freight train we are on in this country? What if it were Israel day and they served couscous, or American day and they had Cheeseburger and fries? It may be stereotyping but to call it racist implies that there is some sort of hatred because of a persons skin color. Let's be honest here. People from different cultures have exactly that: different cultures. And you know what…it's OK. People all over the world are different, and often times you can tell a lot by the way someone dresses or speaks or yes even the color of their skin. Does that mean that one culture is better or worse than another? Absolutely not, but we should celebrate the cultural differences rather than look to sanitize them. I know lot's of Irish and none of them scream racism when I drink green beer on St. Patrick's Day, although they do get tired of the leprechaun jokes. Should we mandate by law that all people will eat the same and dress the same and speak the same language and their countries should all look the same…ridiculous right? Do all blacks in the US like barbecue? No, but most everyone I know does. Am I racist if I say to a black coworker " want to grab some barbecue for lunch"? Is the Entire US racist for Celebrating Cinco De Mayo by getting hammered on Coronas? Let's stop the insanity. I grew up when different races wanted to got to war with each other to "kill em all", "the only good one is a dead one". There was real hatred for each other back then. That was racism………..this is just lunch.
i mean they should of serve shrimp fried rice in honor of black history month
This is what I tell people down here in Possumbutt, Texas: "When you perpetuate this racist slur, you, suh, are perpetuating something that was originally A YANKEE SLUR ON THE WHOLE SOUTH! How do you feel about it now?"
And since there's no Jalapeño or Fried Okra on the menu they're really missing out.
Good points. That's what all of that 'diversity' garbage was about. Leftist swine don't want to bring people together or they wouldn't be able to use their main weapons of envy and resentment.
What I want to know is did the food taste good. Reason asking is the Cook is my sister and I can honestly tell you I know the greens were thoroughly washed and the Chicken was cleaned and seasoned well. For a cook to receive this much about preparing food which she sold out of is non-sense! From what I heard the person who started all this requested the smoked out of the greens so You do the math! People just need to talk about nothing! I stand behind her and with her. Her brother!
St. Pat's is sort of a given. In the Green Island itself, it's also common on NYD.
Actually, I hate to say it, but our "diversity" folks decided our cafeteria needed to do something like this last year. They made the same mistake. It was hysterically stereotypical. Well, it ran in the employee newsletter and of course the poor editor of the newsletter gets this irate woman calling saying how offensive it was.
They didn't do it this year.
How about some Watermelon for desert washed down with a Colt .45 Tall Boy and some Mad Dog?
Did I say that outloud?
Every time I go to the Post Office I ask them if they have any stamps celebrating White History Month sometimes they laugh sometimes they just stare at me.
For dinner we can have Chicken too (white meat), Califlower, mashed potatoes, and white gravey for desert what else Vanilla Pudding , and White Wine. Much like BHO mmm, mmm good.
Hey guise, we'll never defeat PC if we turn PC when it's politically convenient (here and the "retard" incident). This is NOT racist. What is racist about this situation is that a bunch of white NBC employees and while liberal bloggers felt they had the right to take offense on behalf of black people, essentially throwing a decent hard working black chef under the bus for PCness. Don't bite that apple guys.
How the MSM blows this issue up is incredible. I've been to many restaurants and seen many "signs" similar to the NBC menu. Served in the military and seen the same "signs" as well. I would wager that the Senate and House cafeterias have the same thing!!
Bring on the fried chicken !!
we must be culturally sensitive on what meals we eat during black history month and how it is advertised ?
i make corn (cone) bread every other day without a thought that it is black history month…guess i better turn myself in
You are forgetting the sweetened iced tea~!
My husband says the best soul food to be had anywhere could be found on the South Side of Chicago, at a University of Chicago campus cafeteria. He is Atlanta born and bred, and has had collards in many different places. And they served southern cooking year-round, not just during "black history month". (And I'm sure Obama hates the stuff.)
It's an abomination made to cater to sensitive liberals or maybe Muslims and Jews, since the REAL deal is supposed to be made with a smoked hamhock (or three).
Yeah, but it's a special type of lunch served only during a special time of year to honor special people. Why not have it once a week or twice a month? When is "Jewish history month", and where is the chicken soup and half a pastrami on rye or challah bread sandwich with a black and white cookie? What about Chinese history month?
Where's the fried gizzards? I don't see fried gizzards on the menu. Or catfish tails! What kind of weak "black history month" menu is this, anyway?
Well then ask her "what is this crap about 'smoked turkey' in the collards?" SMOKED HAMHOCKS go in the collards! You know it and I know it. And I bet that chicken was fried in safflower oil instead of bacon grease or lard like God intended. MM-mm-mm. I'm sure it was all a nice change from arugula sprayed with dandelion essence or whatever they eat up there in NBC land, but if you're gonna do it, do it up right.
You mean black-eye peas for New Years' day.
How about "have these things on the menu all year"? Collards are high in folic acid and vitamin C and iron, I think. All that soul food stuff is nutritious. Depending on how much salt/lard you cook it with, it can be good for you or just delicious.
and TOTUS will pronounce it "Fuh-Jy-Tas"…
not to mention, when Tiger Woods won his first Masters(?) and thus the privilege of choosing the menu for the awards dinner, Fuzzy Zoeller got ripped for making a comment about fried chicken, etc…
that's actually a veiled reference to Obama…
That's perfect! LOL!
I'm an Italian ,I don't care if the waiter assumes I'm going to order Spags before I order spags. Feeling guilty or stereotyped by your preference of food is a clue to your insecurity. I an happy that I have a buck to eat out. Blacks see racism in their alphabet soup. Its Pathetic Political Correctness .
American Christian Dago Infidel
Michael Canzano
I completely agree that there is nothing racist about the menu (heck I love fried chicken, and I'll never say no to some tasty cornbread). But as you say, there would be outrage if FNC had announced this menu. I dare say several well-known NBC commentators would be shouting about the "insensitivity" and "racist" nature of it all. So why shouldn't we point that out?
Except that's not the story here. The story is how white people saw racism in a decision made by a black person (the chef's decision to put the menu up), which should show just how ridiculous and innately racist a lot of liberals are.
They forgot the watermelon and 40 oz. malt liquor.
SHUT UP GOOD LT. IS BRAINDEAD OR SOMETHING!@#!!!!
OMG!
That's a good deal.
No it is indicative of a stereotype. Stereotypes serve a purpose they are a short circuit answer to questions that are broad in nature. They do not apply to individuals. Hence my question as to whether the the Irish drink Guinness versus do all Irish people drink Guinness? Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and many other foods are associated with a southern black culture. It is not insulting or harmful or racist to notice this, and create a menu to appeal to it. If Rush knew that Obama loved Fried Chicken and Collard Greens then no it would not be racist, but if he applied a stereotype to an individual then it might lead down that path.
I know many Irish people, being one myself, who find it offensive that a bunch of idiots drink green beer on St. Patrick's day, but I have yet to talk to one who protested it or question whether or not the HR department at some restaurant chain has lost their marbles. Let alone think that the stupid consumption of green beer, and it is incredibly stupid, has any impact on what it is to be Irish or an American with Irish ancestry.
And it would have been great and very funny, in my view, if Tiger had picked his favorite menu for the night but provided a special plate of Fried Chicken, Collard Greens and Watermelon just for Fuzzy. As individuals we make fun of our friends as they make fun of us, laugh more and spend less time buying into the left PC double speak nonsense.
This is what made Gran Torino such a great movie.
[...] See, Rush is taking the opportunity to mock NBC, who offered the following meal in celebration of Black History Month: [...]
Don't bogart the bucket O'D! Pass it along to this pasty-white Irish boy! I demand equal access!
exactly!
Hey, I don't know about you people, but I love Southern Fried Chicken and some Collards….
mmm… mmm…. MMMMMM
Free Newports in the designated smoking area.
the 20 oz. Aquafina was supposed to be a 40 oz. Turbo malt liquor…
That's OK, Good Lt. I recognise your sarcasm. I give you a lol.
They forgot on the menu watermelon and kool-aid.
I like me some fried chicken, collards and that turkey, black-eyed peas and rice dish is called hoppin' john, except it should be smoked turkey wings just to flavor it some and the proper dessert would be peach cobbler though watermelon is nice in the summer. That is southern food…. not black food or white food and it is fine stuff!
My buddy Dwayne, a black guy, walked in as I was reading this over at Hot Air. I just showed him the menu, explained that it was at the NBC cafeteria, and asked him what he thought about it. He was like "Oh. Soul food." Then I told him that this was now a racism kerfuffle. His response to that was "What? Are you f***ing kidding me?"
He didn't use the asterisks though. And we both agreed that fried chicken can be very tasty. We did not discuss collard greens.
It's OK for Fox to have it too. Those who would say otherwise are nuts.
Seriously, if you put on a Chinese menu, does that mean you hate the Chinese? It's normally a sign of respect when you serve the food of a particular culture. It says "Hey, y'all have some good food."
There is absolutely nothing wrong here and the only thing I'd like out of the chef is some of her fried chicken. And some of that jalapeno cornbread.
People need to get a life.
Bueno Pablo. No mas.
Thanks guys.
I am half black, but the white side of me loves this food too.Growing up in the South, this was standard fare for everyone.Hard to get good food like that in Colorado
How was the food?
I'm black and I LOVE collard greens, fried chicken and black eyed peas. These are just foods that are part of the "black" culture. I love mexican and italian also, but it wasn't mexican or italian hiistory month. If it were, it would be taco's, enchiladas, burritos, etc. Those are black foods for black history month, makes sense to me, a black woman. ??????
I'm guessing that you're not a mixed individual, but as a mother of mixed children, I can tell you that they at least don't consider themselves to be black. It actually makes me sad when othe kids say they're black because of their tan skin because it's taking away from the whole other side of them. They see themselves as humans that just happen to have a white and black parent that they love equally. Obama loved his white mother and white grandparents and didn't even know his african side but yet he's called black everywhere. That doesn't make sense. His wife and beautiful daughters are black and a quarter white.
Yeah, it just happens that black fold been po' so these foods carried over from generation to generation in black households.
I'm black and from a pretty affluent family. My family still eats those foods. Although we go out to eat a lot and enjoy trying organic foods, sushi, italian and others; we do still eat these foods as tradition. Black families still cook and serve these meals of fried chicken, corn bread, collard greens, gumbo (yummy) and other dishes of this sort as a way of showing the young children what foods were made when you have no money or little money. Of course, the gumbo in my family costs several hundreds to make since we have more money to invest in it. So much shrimp, lobster, prawns, and king crab is put into it and we feed about 20 people hefty servings. It's the best. I think my white husband loves that aspect of being married into a black family. We cook a lot in my family.
The only person I ever knew who drank mad dog was WHITE
White history month is every month except Feb.
If you had spent any time in the South, you'd realize otherwise. My grandfather, for example, was at the opposite end of the socioeconomic scale and yet favored such basic "country cookin'" his entire life.
It became identified as a "black" cuisine – "soul food" – when southern blacks brought it with them to Northern cities during the Black Diaspora during and after WWI.
A black cook made that menu up. I would be happy to have it. Maybe they should stop having black history month, I'll have to go a whole month without eating chicken and collards.
I have wanted to write your sister a letter of support but did not know how to reach her. I'll just do it through you instead. I love what she did. She obviously put a lot of thought and work into the meal. I can imagine how heartbroken and shocked she must have been to think that people thought it was malicious. I bet instead it was delicious. I am white and wish I could have had some of her cooking. I grew up on the very same food. I remember my grandmother from Tennessee cooking collard greens. (And I do it now) And did we love fried chicken and watermelon !!
I hope she realizes that sometimes when you have an independent idea, those who only follow the crowd will attack you out of their ignorance. She may now have the necessary publicity to open her own restaurant and leave NBC in the dust. Do it !!
Give me a break on the chicken Please, I'm black and I reather have a fillet are some king crab. Please keep the black eyed peas and corn bread. The so calledn soul food is nothing moren than southeren cooking.
The smoke turkey is to help flavvor the greens instead of using pork
I'm black and I like fried chiken and BBQ also Italian, French, Chinees, Japanise Korean Greek so on and so on NOT affended. So why is this a big deal. Hey I eat corn beef on ST Pat day is that wrong??????????
It so sad that you can't even have a meal withoutn being a racist. So if I have some corn bread during black history mont that wrong, or Beritoes the 5th of may nor during Rashanna some kosher meals? gee itn ton hard to eat.
Mad dog? that was taken off the market yeas ago. I would like to find a good melon during winter.
as a black person this is soooo silly, I like all types of food and I was not offended. Soul food is just msoutheren cooking grew up on it and so did many people in then southn black and white.
otn true my friend. I'm black and I was not offended. Hell I like all types of food including fried chicken, greens, corn bread, watermelon. Soul food is just southeren cooking. Shouldm people from the south be offended?
You are so on point. The real story is how Black people are viewed period not just by liberals. We are not so sensitive that hey we can't eat freid chicken or greens. This is not all we eat, there are plenty of foods served from all over the world in this country and just like most American black people like food all different types of food. Do most Black people eat southern (soul food) some or most. Hell I'm Black and can't answer that. Maybe if you want to find racism in anything you can. Liberal/conservative it dosen't mater we are so divided with finger pointing that we can't even sit down and enjoy a meal. King must be laughing.
Watermelon you can't find a good melon in winter and I like Kool-Aid better than pop. Dose that make me Black?
Black people like white meat of chicken (breast or wings) and mash potatoes with white gravey, califlower, vanilla puding and Chardina. That sounds like the Sunday dinner I grew upm on except the wine. Can I keep my ID of being black?
Watermelon is for summer when it is sweet and cool and good to eat . I don't know too many black people whon drng malt liquor, myself I like congac VSOP or XO chilled.
Wow. Really? Overall, black people do eat these items from the menu. And? I have to add the old standby that "White people eat that too". I'm not offended at the menu. The stupid menu is just the tip of the iceberg. Sigh.
