You know you’re having a bad day, Joan Walsh, when it’s just you and Max Blumenthal alone in a foxhole while you’re being overwhelmed by the truth. Because David Weigel, one of your sources for Blumenthal’s story and Max’s own blog posts that James O’Keefe once helped organize a “racist conference,” has now “clarified” his remarks and guess what? Your story just fell apart. Read it and weep:
Clarification — and Mea Culpa — on James O’Keefe and ‘Race and Conservatism’
On Wednesday, I wrote a post reacting to Max Blumenthal’s story “James O’Keefe’s Race Problem” and was too quick with a description of the August 30, 2006 Robert Taft Club event on “race and conservatism.” Specifically, I wrote this:
“A zoomed-in headshot of James O’Keefe (after the jump), then working for the Leadership Institute, survived, although it cropped out the table he was sitting at, covered in controversial literature.”
In a later post, I walked this back: While I’d been at the event, it was Isis, a photographer/investigator for the One People’s Project, who told me that her photo was actually a picture of O’Keefe at a table of controversial literature. But several e-mailers and commenters have pointed out that my first post appeared to endorse Blumenthal’s whole story. I want to quickly walk through that story and point out the parts that, based on my experience at the event and interviews with Isis and event organizer Marcus Epstein, were not true.

There follows five points of material error in Blumenthal’s story and in the original post at the “anti-racist” website, One People’ s Project (whose site is adorned with the old Soviet Union colors of red and gold, and features a Soviet-style logo). Among the revelations:
O’Keefe has denied any role in planning the event, and Epstein has backed him up. In an interview yesterday, Isis told me: “I don’t believe O’Keefe planned the event.”
Weigel goes on to say:
I stand by the rest of my description of the event in my original post. But later that day, as Breitbart started pushing back against the story, I wrote: “I’m curious to see what Breitbart goes after — I was at the 2006 event that leads Blumenthal’s story and can confirm all the details about it.” That was sloppy phrasing — I meant that I could confirm all the stuff I’d already written. I had no idea that One People’s Project had told Breitbart’s reporter that I could confirm the facts as presented by them. They should stand by their own story — and they really, really need to produce a full photo of O’Keefe at the event.
Now the indispensable Patterico (Patrick Frey) has joined the fray. In a post this morning, Patterico dissects Weigel’s mea culpa and adds:
Weigel is far from conservative — but he does appear to me to be an honest writer. Now, according to the logic of the left, the fact that Weigel was at the event means he is a racist and you can’t believe anything he says. Right? But assuming you don’t subscribe to that loony “logic,” you might pay some attention to what Weigel has to say.
Max Blumenthal’s story has completely fallen apart. It is time for Salon to issue a lengthy and detailed retraction.
You can read our request for retractions here.
Over to you Joan and Max.

Bravo!
Keep up the pressure on these crapweasels who hide behind the mask of "reporting".
You would think anyone with a bit of sense (that includes progressives) would learn, starting from the Dan Rather "expose", that the Internet subjects any published misinformation to death by a thousand cuts. Joan Walsh and Max Blumenthal are now hemorrhaging and Salon needs a mop up crew.
Bravo X10 Breitbart. I am a new fan. You did excellent work on this. I kept telling my friends to zip it until we got the whole story. I just KNEW the likes of that slime Joan Walsh were going to try their best to destroy O'Keefe some way. I like Andrew Breitbart on TV as well. He doesn't suffer foolish TV anchors easily and I love that!!!!
Since I was directed here I thought I should comment. Are ya'll as exited as I am for February 12th? Seems more information will come out at the hearing. Do you worry that the Feds might be building a conspiricy case? I know I would be after reading the Federal complaint concerning the arrests. Acorn? hahaha Welcome to the big league. And good luck with that.
If all of these amateurs dressing up as "journalists" had any sense at all, they would issue speedy retractions of their sloppy work AND sincere letters of thanks to Breitbart (and Retracto) for calling them out onto the carpet. Maybe if they are forced (they can't be SHAMED, I'm guessing) into making enough corrections in front of their peers and readers, they will weary of the re-work queue and TRY TO GET THE STORY RIGHT THE 1ST TIME!
But, if some outlets aren't really interested in reporting the truth, and would rather stick with the "personal truth" style of "editorial journalism", then they should at least put disclaimers on their websites alerting readers to the lack of integrity present.
Agreed.
When you refer to amateurs dressing up as "journalists" are you including Pimpdaddy O'Keefe in that list? Hope so. Otherwise you would be outing yourself as a huge hypocrit.
O'Keefe has driven the socialist lying leftists outta their minds.
IT'S AMAZING – THE MORE THEY TRY TO DESTROY HIM, THE SWIFTER THEIR SELF-DESTRUCTION !
Karma, Cosmic Justice and Cheatin' Shows….
ANAGRAMS:
"Blumenthal = Numb/lethal."
"Andrew Breitbart = Writer nabbed rat."
"BigJournalism.com = Bug criminals' mojo."
Uh oh. Huge pwnage. This whole debacle has been hilarious.
Somebody left the hatch to the troll box unlocked.
Stay vigilant, Big Journalism. Don't ease up on the pressure.
Here's another thing Joan Walsh might consider for retraction:
"I'm proud of what we've accomplished at Salon — with much more to come…"
Wow! I'm impressed.
But, if I show your post to my cynical daughter she'll say, "Some people have waaay too much time on their hands."
O'Keefe did more to protect the US taxpayer in the ACORN than the entire mainstream press and "professional journalists" combined. And journalists had to be dragged kicking and screaming into covering it because they knew it hit close to the Democrat party and to Obama (a one-time ACORN litigant).
Had journalists done their jobs over the years instead of devoting all of their time and resources targeting people to the right of Stalin for destruction, ACORN might never have degenerated into the cesspool of illegal activity, corruption and disgrace that it now is.
Your obsessive hate of all-things-right-of-center is showing.
I used to be a conservative. Then I grew up. ~snicker
The only thing worth reading at Salon is Camille Paglia, when she's honest with herself. The rest of Salon is the internet version of what I would do with my NYT if I was still stupid enough to pay for it: Use it for kindling.
You're implying that journalists have never interviewed targets in "secret shopper" mode? You've outed yourself as an ignorant MSNBC consumer.
Answer to rhetorical question: Not as many as do now.
Hate? Wow! Are the rest of ya'll this paranoid? I was making a comment.Which was not answered btw.
Good luck with what?
Motion carried.
You got older but you didn't grow up.
So you think taxpayer money should go to criminal conspiracies to evade income taxes and set up brothels using 14 yr old girls from South America?
You call that growing up?
I was implying that O'Keefe and crew were amateurs. You out yourself with an ad hominem attack. Your problem might just be a basic lack of reading comprehension.
TIme to leave the basement. Your mom has your Spaghettios rady.
Got nothing eh?

How does someone become a film critic?…somebody gives you a job as a film critic.
I suspect this is how most "journalists" become journalists.
Yes, there are schools of journalism but apart from teaching some basic jargon, some history about journalism and basic grammar…what secret knowledge do they impart that transforms mere mortals into JOURNALISTS?
The answer is (of course)…..nothing.
Advances in technology are exposing the fraud that is establishment journalism.
The public is quickly becoming aware that virtually anyone with opposable thumbs and the ability to coherently convey their thoughts can do as good a job or better than the average J-School grad.
The consternation from the establishment is that the new crop of citizen-journalists do not share their leftist, statist, corporatist worldview…and this is a bothersome thing.
Uh. Sorry, but it's the other way around. If you "grew up" and became "idealistic" (translated as Democrat, or Liberal, or Progressive), you're hopeless.
Wow. Are you sane?
No, see, Salon and Blumenthal had nothing.
That's why they're being called out and are issuing retractions and corrections.
Anything else?

ABC News vs. Food Lion.
Google it.
Grey hair is a sign of age, not wisdom.
LOL. I thought you were going to say: Use it for toilet paper.
Nothing is what you have between your ears and legs.
No, idiot, that's yourself you're describing except that you forgot "lack of integrity" and "obedient parrot".
Good example but he won't look it up. Doesn't fit his "narrative".
Do you mean "amateur" as opposed to "professional"?
Acorn? hahaha Welcome to the big league. And good luck with that
Good luck with your maturity problem.
Adolescent simpletons "snicker ".
Grown-ups GUFFAW.
I see a little further down that YOU went on the "ad hominem" attack, mistaking it for an appropriate response to a legitimate question, so that makes YOU a hypocrite.
Sorry for all the big words; I know they make you feel confused.
We can tell that you were directed here, yes, it's that obvious.
So O'Keefe was not there with his buddy Epstein, and Stormfront's presence is just a misunderstood gaggle of racists who came just for the buffet?
Must you continue with ad hominem attacks? Do you not know how to make a cogent statement of fact?
How mature. How old are you? Like 12?
AreaMan66…
great for calling journalism for what it is….nothing. Where are the Journalism schools who supposedly teach the "Standard". Where is their outrage?
Just today on MSNBC the opening news story at 0600 on "Morning Joe" was a clip of an interview by an opinion news show host with a comedian. This was the big news of the day! Absolutely nothing. I guess that trumped the drop of the DOW Jones below 10K, or an unemployment increase greater than 10%.
I see the news a an attempt to communicate with other news providers. In reality the audience gets nothing related to news. It is all a conversation of one news commentator with another news commentator…with an attempt to sway a viewer to their way of thinking. Mostly it seems our news has degraded to an opinion and rumor talk show…slightly more professional than Jerry Springer. Maybe that is what journalism schools teach these days…maybe they will respond…if not we can only assume they are complict with this level of opinion and rumor called news.
When you type "YOU: instead of "you" does that make you feel more significant in the scheme of things?
Nice job! It's about time conservatives start striking back on things like this rather than just letting it slide. They want to make a war of it that war will be over awfully quick when their side refuses to either common sense, logic or facts. Show the idiots no mercy.
Or poverty… if you don't have enough money to buy Grecian Formula.
I would say that Retracto, the Correction Alpaca, is eating the MSM's lunch.
He should leave their hats though. The lefties should be left with something to munch on.
Jerry Springer started as a MSMedia newscaster, he fulfilled their criteria so well he graduated to the 'Jerry Springer Show'.
If by "mom" you mean "hairy man in a tight satin dress", and by "Spaghetti-O's" you mean "ball-gag".
lolwut?

Tar and Feather please. Let's put a face to the people that should write for the enquirer. (Oh wait! they are actually starting to break true stories! Who would've thought).
lol….that was quick….let's try this one:

Don't think toilet paper would work as well in my fireplace but you're right–the NYT does often resemble its primary functional qualities. I was always told to use newspaper for kindling if I couldn't find small twigs on the ground.
BTW, thanks for supporting Breitbart. Your clicks to this site mean additional traffic, additional revenues!
Good points.
Back in the day, one could only become a "journalist" when one was hired by a news organization (newspaper, TV reporter, etc.) and, usually after the had gotten a degree in journalism. Made it very easy to control the content you want published. When the internet came along, opening up reporting on anything by anyone (whether a legit story or not), the word "journalist" became… cheapened. I say this as an artist, who 20 years ago, got a degree in "graphic Design". However, when Microsoft and other software companies designed desktop programs, essentially, making anyone with a computer a "graphic designer", the title "graphic designer" became cheapened as well. Thank goodness I made my $ in the plastics industry instead!
Uh, I think you got this totally mixed up. When you are young, you have an excuse for being a leftist idealist. When you grow up and are still a leftist/idealist, you are just an idiot.
Great job on this as usual, Breitbartians.
It really makes you wonder what other slanders occurred before anyone could call them on it. We had a liberal media for thirty years. How much of what they reported was bald fabrication like this?
By the way, also, I think you need to create a "Most Dishonest Story" award, maybe monthy, and a yearly award ceremony. Sort of an Oscars for liberal journalism. The MSM won't cover it obviously, but Fox might.
That seems to be the troll-killer.
Yuck- NYT ink on the butt. No thanks.
Excellent work.
Not only has the smear been obliterated and shown for the disgusting, fact-free, poorly sourced race-baiting hackery that it was, but it provides an illustrative and teachable moment for all looking on about how the leftwing smear merchants employed at allegedly "mainstream" news organization like Salon.com (in this case, a Clinton-era hatchet man) do what they do.
I'm sure they're not going to think twice about trying it again. But that's half the fun of BigJournalism, isn't it?
Keep up the great work, Brietbart and Co.
I'm beginning to wonder if O'Keefe didn't do a larger service by being arrested. It certainly has knocked the wheels off the MSM/ Progressive/Liberal/ Left Coalition wagon and demonstrated the incestuous relationship between them. A Vast Left Wing Conspiracy does exist, rhetorical question….who knew?
The only surprise here is that they admitted the "mistake"…Has the MSM picked up this story?? Yea, right…
Conspiracy to do what? Dress up like members of the Village People and start re-enacting scenes from "Can't Stop The Music" for a politician? Cause' in New Orleans, that's not really a crime. That's just an average night out on Bourbon Street.
Yeah. We have Retracto, the Correction Alpaca, and the lefties have Odumbo, the Direction Jackass.
What?
No, I'm not 'exited'. I just got here.
No, I'm not 'exited'. I just got here.
Troll, you have not provided any facts or links to "actual" facts, only statements. There is no reason to reply other than to let you feel that we are stroking your ego because you received a reply. Feel stroked now?
So he didn't PLAN the event. So what!
Did he have a table? Was he a strong proponent?
What are his ties to Jared Taylor? American Renaissance? White Nationalism/Supremism?
What are you afraid of O'Keefe and Breitbart?
What are you so afraid of being exposed??
As your post confirms, "O’Keefe at a table of controversial literature."
Thanks for the infos! Your blog actually helped me.
