Remember when the Left was the champion of the Little Guy? When they hated the “undemocratic” Electoral College and passed the 17th Amendment to force the direct election of Senators? When Andrew Jackson effectively invented the modern Democratic Party by throwing open the doors of the White House to the people and defying Supreme Court orders?

Well, that was then and this is now, because here comes Kurt Andersen in New York Magazine to tell us that the problem with democracy is… you guessed it:
So now we have a country absolutely teeming with irregular passions and artful misrepresentations, whipped up to an unprecedented pitch and volume by the fundamentally new means of 24/7 cable and the hyperdemocratic web. And instead of a calm club of like-minded wise men (and women) in Washington compromising and legislating, we have a Republican Establishment almost entirely unwilling to defy or at least gracefully ignore its angriest, most intemperate and frenzied faction—the way Reagan did with his right wing in the eighties and the way Obama is doing with his unhappy left wing now.
Just as the founders feared, American democracy has gotten way too democratic.
When it comes to reenacting our patriotic founding story, we’d better keep choosing to play the deliberative gentlemen engaged in careful compromise more than the apoplectic vandals dressed up as Indians and throwing things overboard.
Andersen’s not alone in his contempt for modern American democracy. Don’t forget that New York Times columnist Tom Friedman delivered himself of this classic last year:
Watching both the health care and climate/energy debates in Congress, it is hard not to draw the following conclusion: There is only one thing worse than one-party autocracy, and that is one-party democracy, which is what we have in America today.
One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages. That one party can just impose the politically difficult but critically important policies needed to move a society forward in the 21st century.
What do you think? Brave forward-thinking progressivism or oligarchical fascism? Now that the Super Bowl is over — congrats, Saints! — let’s hear what you have to say.

Fall on your sword and take it like a man, Peyton…a Great Game for the Saints!!!!!
why are there no american groups we can get to sing for half time shows? why do we keep importing bands from other countries. not that the who were bad, but only 2 original members, and a lot of lights. can't we do better? also on topic, why is it that democrats keep saying one man one vote, when that does not apply to our president, only every other office? there is a reason for the electoral college, it makes it so every state has a say in who wins as president. if they try and pass the scam they are trying, to make a president with popular vote, then they will only campaign in new york, los angeles, and chicago. they will only need to get the vote from every inner city welfare recipients, and union members, and skip the rest of the country.
"But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today…"
F-him, if he wants to live in a communist country then get the hell out of ours!
"we’d better keep choosing to play the deliberative gentlemen engaged in careful compromise more than the apoplectic vandals dressed up as Indians and throwing things overboard."
If I remember right, these "vandals" were also the traitors that built, fought & died to form this country in the first place.
I'll take farmers, small business owners and everyday people over a "reasonably enlightened group of people" any day of the week because they understand what is at stake for the rest of us.
I would not say we have too much democracy. I would say we have too little republic…..
Congrats to the Saints. It has been a long time coming.
Yes, darn us annoying citizens and our "irregular passions".
We only seem to be a problem when the lying leftists lose a few elections, eh?
When Obummer won, Americans were a bright, enlightened bunch. What frauds these progressive twits are.
The absolute incompetence of the ObamaMessiah and his huge Dem majority in Congress is forcing the loony left to turn hard-core Communist.
Yeah, I'm talking to you, Friedman.
Man, this was a difficult game for me, as I love both the Colts and the Saints. I was tilting sentimentally towards New Orleans, but I never really expected them to win. My friend's neighborhood down in the Crescent City exploded when the game's final seconds ticked down. I predict they'll be carting people out of the French Quarter come morning for alcohol poisoning. Oh well, I'm happy for them.
Regarding the post, all I'll say is I think we should repeal the 17th Amendment. That's all.
They are the elite! They are the Intellectuals!
Here is a guy who nails them!
Dr. Thomas Sowell on Intellectuals
http://usataxpayer.org/?0028068146
….and he said this to all fifteen of his readers…..the socialist standard bearer in print, also a dead business model, squeeks it way into oblivion while bathed in the fallacy of assumed authority. This particular American believes the NY mag has gone from an interesting read to a useless rag. In pretty short time at that. Give this goof the putzer prize and say good bye. Good bye and stay that way.
I'm sorry, but did Friedman suggest we just hand over our country to an oligarchy? What exactly qualifies Congress as "enlightened" when in recent years it's just turned into a popularity contest.
it is not that it was a bad show, but this is sometimes called the most watched annual event, and we don't have a single american band that can perform? i could list lots of them, but i guess to cbs, americans are second class acts when it comes to the superbowl.
Aren't we a republic?
Is The Problem with Democracy Too Much Democracy?
Ah, yep. This is because we do not live in a Democracy. As a mater of fact, the word is not in the Constitution, Declaration of independence or even the Constitutions of ANY of the 50 states.
its fun listing major achievements in history. the astonomers and leading scientists could not figure out how to navigate, all it took was a carpenter who made clocks to figure it out. and nobody could make a powered flight, until a couple of bicycle makers showed them how. nobody could imaging winning the cold war, until a b-rate actor showed us how. when will intellectuals figure out, talking is fine, but doing is better. tomorrow is presidents day, i say down a shot of your favorite adult beverage in the gippers name!!
Your link didn't work.
Has everyone seen this video of the ex KGB agent in 1985 outlining how to take over a country? I am stunned.

I am increasingly convinced that liberal thinkers have been exposed to thought viruses as powerful as the prime ego-driver: "you should be happy." But what they heard and believed in a time of vulnerability was "Life should be fair which means that you should always feel happy."
The Saints & Colts have very tight ties:
-Payton- N.O. boy
-Joseph Addai-LSU
-Drew Brees- Purdue University
-Tracy Porter- Indiana University
-Courtney Roby- Indianapolis native, Indiana University
-After Hurricane Katrina, the Saints used the RCA Dome for practice & was offered as an alternative for Saints Home Games by Indianapolis.
I'm not happy about the Colts loss but I'm not upset that the Saints have their 1st Super Bowl win either.
They seem to think they need an 'arena band' like the Stones, U2, the Who and is geared for an older audience. Their target demographic must be the 35-55 year old guy – are there many American bands still together who fit that bill? They had Springsteen already…
i think the pledge says, to republic for which it stands, not the democracy for which it stands.
Intellect, i.e. candlepower in your head, is a dangerous thing when divorced from either moral guidance or a life of substance.
I love it, the progressives can’t hold in their contempt for liberty and freedom- the way the founders intended.
At least they are exposing themselves to us (not that we didn’t already know who they were)
Lorben
The next item on the "regressive" agenda will be to get rid of the Senate all together….It just gets in the way of all the wonderful policies they want to pass, just for me….and you.'…all
Thomas Friedman needs to retire (maybe he could open an independent bookstore cafe in Bethesda that could be patronized by like-minded delusional and uneducated liberals) and Kurt Anderson needs to stop inflicting us with his elitist drivel. As for the NYT and the New Yorker? They make great kindling if you’re still stupid enough to subscribe.
I am not sure why it isn't working. I got it to work when I cut and paste the url into my address bar. Sorry for the incovenience!
Indeed!
Is The Problem with Democracy Too Much Democracy?
Ah, yep. This is because we do not live in a Democracy. As a mater of fact, the word Democracy is not in the Constitution, Declaration of independence or even the Constitutions of ANY of the 50 states.
Isn't that what the One is using the Czars for? I am hoping and praying we will be able to hold them at bay for the next year and then start chiseling away at the structure they have built over the last thirty to a hundred years.
Neither is health care. Neither mortgage backed securities nor public service pensions.
The New Yorker and the NYT, for those who are deaf, dumb and blind and still subscribing, make great kindling. And since there's a big snow dump expected this Tuesday and Wednesday right smack on top of the Manhattanites who like to frequent the Hamptons, all they need is some matches for some nice (globally) warm emissions.
Sorry brah but it's not a cure. The "Tea Party" movement is the first successful biological drug. The Progressives are actually right about Big Pharma. If they can't squeeze it into a pill then forget the market. But that is where agreement ends.
Big Pharma doesn't like biological therapies (NO! not holistic) because one day they will work. Not good for the pill biz.
Oh, how I wish a whole lot of those "enlightened" leeches were out of work, pounding the pavement like a whole lot of other Americans.
Now THERE'S a TRUE intellectual! Love Dr. Thomas Sowell and read his column regularly.
I think Prince did a nice show a couple of years ago, too. Hey, Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, before that, though that didn't work out so well. But it seems like we may have a single American band that can perform. Or two.
Let me ask you a question, and please answer it honestly.
Do you personally know an "intellectual," (either self-declared or by reputation), who almost has to have help figuring out how to cross the street?
Enough said.
That's why we're in the current boondoggle. We need to oust the elitist, prima-donna, ivy leaguers, who look down their snooty noses at We The People – and tell us they know what is best for us.
Remember how they put down Sarah Palin because she went to a state university? I can't help myself. Where's the tar and feathers?
Rags like "New York Magazine" and the New York Times are dying because fewer people want to read the leftist drivel, and we get more timely info on the internet, so you will be getting your wish…the 'enlightened leeches' will soon be pounding the pavement, and their pud, when we win in November and 2012.
Good luck, dude. Rock all night long!

I never knew statists were so childish. Apparently, I also didn’t know the best way to win over the American people was to insult them. Man up, you blew it. You misdiagnosed your victory in 2008 and your leader is feckless. “Let me be clear”, statists, in November the American people will vote for representatives to clean up your mess and reconstitute our great republic.
Of course the Founders feared the effects of too much democracy. That is why we have a republic, and why there was so much "refinement" of the popular vote in elective offices, which by extension affects the Supreme Court.
As such, saying that we do in fact have "too much democracy" compared to the Constitution in 1781 is far from being an outrageous statement.
The question is what to do about it. Jefferson said the solution to the people being ignorant was to inform them. Hamilton opposed that, but equally said that the only thing worse than the evil of faction was the evil of trying to suppress it.
The thing is, for progressives, there is no contradiction in advocating oligarchical fascism in the name of the "common man". Indeed that is pretty much the definition of Progressivism in the 20th century, continuing through to the 21st century.
So I guess the answer to your question is: "Both – the choices you give are synonymous."
First, we don't have just one party in control. That sort of thing is always temporary, and only a result of the OTHER party screwing up big time!
More importantly, we do not need less democracy, we need more! We are not electing kings, but that is what the presidency has almost become, a temporary monarchy. Once elected, both Bush and Obama thought they could then take the throne, and do whatever they wanted to do with it. Neither one listened to the people! If politicians actually let the majority decide all their important decisions (except in an emergency, of course) I truly think this country would end up being ruled by common sense! That is, assuming an educated and well informed public, not controlled by propaganda.
I think perhaps Mr Rich would like to donate some organs to a person or persons who need them more, as a number of the subjects of his Oriental enlightened ones have done…
First…Politics is a bare-knuckle blood sport…the first person to try to suggest "genteel" should also be the first one laid out on the floor…
Second…The 17th Amendment is a screw up, and should be repealed…
Third…The free press is NOT free…access to elected officials is used to bring to heel the recalcitrant…all reports should come from the pool, not because ABC is in the mood to kiss a$$ that week…
Four…Congressional service should be a grueling, miserable task; with long flights back and forth from home to Washington, long "town halls" without audience picking, and time away from Washington spent four days a week in your home district or state office, while listening to Grandma screaming over where her Social Security check is…NOT your staff members while your away at the martini lunch with the lobbyists…
In fact, I'd have you CHAINED to that desk except for bathroom breaks and meals, which will come off the hot dog cart outside your office…or you can order in from Domino's…
Yes, it is gratifying to see capitalism at work, isn't it? Just stand firm against any possible government bailout for the media!
However, I was secretly thinking of the so-called "enlightened" ones in D.C. when I wrote that! LOL>
These elitist are just frustrated because we still have a democracy where the will of the people still counts. In spite of overwhelming majorities in both houses your progressive nitwit congress did not have the cojones to stuff your socialist BS down the throats of an unwilling right of center American people.
Mao eats America. Mao takes our ENERGY. We will default the ChiComm loans intended for default. Now CHINA owns us, the moon, outer space and the universe…all in one year of Obama. Obama intentionally lost WW3.
nov2 PAYBACK.
"forward-thinking progressivism or oligarchical fascism"
What's the difference? It's the same thing!
Progressivism I think is a disease but its OK because we have found the cure! It's called the TEA PARTY movement.
I thought the half-time light show was pretty good. Definitely glad I had one last tab of acid I saved from 1972….
Amusingly, in the Arena section at Politico they had this question for feedback: Who is more condescending, liberals or conservatives?
Well…Politico? Did you really need to ask that question. LOL!
Yes he does! Dr. Sowell is one of my favorites.
China is so enlightened that when people don't follow lock step with the CCP–that's China Communist Party–are sent to "re-education through labor." That's double speak for brainwashing through torture. And, in case you think this is an outdated cahrge, here's a guy who was sent in July, 2009:
http://chinadigitaltimes.net/china/re-education-t...
A Chinese environmental activist and his daughter have been sentenced to re-education through labour without a trial on charges of passing state secrets abroad, his wife said.
Sun Xiaodi, 55, a former uranium mine worker in the north-west province of Gansu who has campaigned against alleged environmental degradation since 1988, was sentenced to two years labour re-education, Hu Jianhong said.
Their daughter, Sun Haiyan, 25, was given the same punishment for 18 months, Ms Hu said over the phone, crying as she expressed deep concern for her only child, whom she has not been able to see for over a month.
If that's "enlightened" then I'll remain in the 'dark ages' thank you very much. Why do we continue to gloss over Chinese atrocities as if they don't happen?
shocked…what is intellect? Being supremely well read? Supremely well exposed?
Intellect is nothing but a fabrication. I'll take the identity of cunning instead. Yeah I know my command of the English language would piss off the King and…well I like pissing off Kings.
Let New York Magazine, NYT, Krugman, Klein, Time, LAT or whoever take the intellectual high road. Once they get there we cunning will just knock their arse off the cliff. KISS KISS
[...] Hey, don’t blame Obama. It’s just that America is “ungovernable.” All is proceeding exactly as I have foreseen. . . [...]
Question that I need answered because I really do not understand this:
"Why hasn't the US been drilling for our own oil and gas and selling it to China?"
Obviously, this would level the playing field on a political level and would most certainly help us become less dependent of China financially.
First: The Saints were awesome last night. Great Win, ONSIDE KICK !!
During the last century our form of democracy has been tarnished. Over the years, liberalism, when tied with progressivism (or the other way around) has been testing each branch of the federal government in order to gain power over branches of the federal government. Individualism in America is overtaken by a cult of collectism via the democrat party. What the Tea Party represents is a return to the values of individual responsibility but mostly a return of American citizens keeping federal branches in check.
"One-party autocracy certainly has its drawbacks. But when it is led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today, it can also have great advantages."
__Yes it does have advantages, but the reasonably enlightened group almost always turn into power hungry, oppressive, evil fascists before it is over. I do not see the Chinese as reasonable, I remember the clubs, arrests and massacre of Tinaniman Square!__
Our so-called elite would love to have the same power as those in China. They they could do what they know is best for us!
That is a chilling thought!
The word 'democracy' is not in the U.S. Constitution. It is however, in the Communist Manifesto: "Establishing democracy is the first step in the revolution." – Karl Marx
In other words, I don't think this is the right question or worthy of discussion
You know the old saying…"Old age and cunning will win against youth and idealism every time."
"led by a reasonably enlightened group of people, as China is today,"
I'm sorry, but this line has to be some sort of joke. He couldn't possibly be serious.
One party autocracies: First, they murder their own people, then the attack and kill their neighbors, then they are defeated and dumped on the ash heap of history. Friedman is a genius.
American musicians suck. That's about all I can come up with.
It's impossible to gaurantee a clean show with the sleeze put out of Hollywood and New York these days.
Fergie might piss on herself or something.
Kurt Andersen is now a serious political philospher? Who knew? I always thought he was an f''ing, unfunny, arrogant windbag.
Yea some of the neighbors here in Baton Rouge began shooting off fireworks when Porter intercepted Manning.
Sean Payton's aggressive playing to win play calling along with that swarming defense should be the real MVP.
alright, alright…a brief moment of Manning insensitivity….should I replace his name with Obama, since he predicted a Colts win (posted on Drudge)?
Mr. Ross asks, "Brave forward-thinking progressivism or oligarchical fascism?" There is a difference ???? I think not. Progressivism is socialism and fascism with a Nanny frontman.
Perhaps we should return to "tar and featherings" or canings on the senate floor.
UK ratings.
This is one of the common threads throughout those who are libbies/dems.
The fact that when it comes down to brass tax, if there are those opposed to your 'what's best for the US,' eliminate those voices from the conversation, marginalize in or remove them from society, or just plain force them to comply with what they (libbies/dems) think is best.
Regardless of how inhumane, how intolerant, how bigotted, how prejudiced it is.
"needed to move a society forward in the 21st century"
I've never figured out why "moving forward" is such a survivor in our language. It's a contentless phrase. It betrays assumptions, yes, but it says nothing. It may indicate, though, that the speaker mistakenly thinks it means something — thus, a great shibboleth of stupidity.
Here's what comes up when you click the link: The URL contained a malformed video ID.

That's a new one on me.
Keeping the republic alive would be our best chance at survival as a nation. It's maddening when almost everyone refers to us as a democracy, showing their ignorance for history. Go to http://tacitusdominatus.com/ for some insight.
He seeks an aristocracy by another name. A healthy democracy is noisey, irreverant, and disrespectful of the "betters".
I'm sure King George III and his advisors felt exactly the same way about American penny broadsheets and newspapers and Presbyterian sermons in the 1770s as Mr. Anderson does about 24/7 news broadcasts and the internet. Geeez if those vulgar masses would just shut up.
"The best form of governemt is Monarchy when the monarch is good. The worst form of goverment is Monarchy when the monarch is bad."
Cicero
I must disagree, Scanlon, Obama's incompetence isn't forcing the loony left to turn hard-core Communist. The Left in this country has always been pure fascist at heart, it's just that they've never held untrammeled power before. They are frustrated that their much cherished plan to subjugate and enslave the American worker has provoked a revolution.
What to they oppose? The First and Second Amendments. Why? Because as long as our freedom of speech and our freedom to keep and bear arms remain intact we can topple any nascent tyranny by armed insurrection if necessary.
Who do they admire? Che Guevara, Hugo Chavez, Mao Zedung — any bloodstained dictator you care to name. They even backed Hitler until he attacked the Left's maximum leader, Josef Stalin.
Who do they scorn? Any champion of Liberty you care to name.
We do NOT live in a democracy. It's a constitutionally limited republic. If you don't know the difference you have been successfully brainwashed in a government school
ANY democracy is too much democracy. Our founding fathers knew this very well. Read their papers and the US Constitution.
Democracy is mob rule. A constitutionally limited government is a government of laws, not people. People agree to the laws and then follow them or change them but people never take the law into their own hands in a republic.
Whenever I hear someone refer to the US as a democracy I know I am hearing a progressive once again distorting the truth.
The last thing Americans want is a democracy; but it is the first thing the progressives want for it will lead to mob rule and ultimately a socialist state in which there are peons and a ruling elite class. If this is your goal, then this is where s democracy will lead.
Brave forward-thinking progressivism = oligarchical fascism
Would that they took the high road, but it is anything but high. As the Texan saying has it, it is lower than a snake in the wagon trail.
Yeah, well, we'll have a nice, new enlightened bunch in Congress after the November elections, and they can legislate into place all those pesky difficult things we'll need in order to prosper well into the future. Somebody tell Friedman to hold on to his ass, because Revolution is COMING!
The left are once again revealing who they are. They know "what's best for us" and we are being too darn uppity in DARING to disagree with that stalinist point of view.
It should be one person- one vote. Politicians will campaign in the big cities because that is where the voters are.
The introduction of clean water systems and efficient sewer systems was deemeed progressive at the time. So was the the creation of a federal Interstate highway system. The idea of allowing women to vote was progressive for its time. Giving the right to allow black people to vote in this country was progressive for its time. To me progressive means improving the world around you for the benefit of mankind. Your narrow view of progressivism seems to leave out all the achievements that have been made by ordinary people. Go ahead, go back and start drinking out of that mud puddle again, and you might just view progressivism a little differently.
Pure democracy really is rule by the lowest common denominator – rule by fool because the masses are asses, as I like to say – which is why the founders set up a representative republic. It really is the best compromise that men have ever come up with. Unfortunately, more and more democracy has been added to the mix until it's a bit out of balance, I think.
Remember, Heaven is a Kingdom, not a democracy.
Where to begin? Anderson's entire column deserves a proper fisking, as much for the history he neglects as for the history he revises.
"The founding fathers saw this coming, but the walls they erected to contain the mob may no longer hold."
The Founders also knew that the problem with government is government. The walls they erected to contain it are manned the people and the state legislators they….. elect. Directly.
Indeed, the Founders envisioned an electorate — and the coolheaded gentlemen Anderson so admires — of property owners with skin in the game. They made no provision for the advice and consent of a self appointed intellectual elite, to the everlasting indignation of the unempowered class Anderson "represents."
The people, in their wisdom, expanded the franchise, through a process which the Founders, in their wisdom, devised. Oddly enough, Anderson and his brainy ilk seem quite incapable of formulating any workable alternative to the sturdy framework the Founders provided. They are left eternally tinkering about the edges and stewing in their own resentments. The reins of this Republic will never be Constitutionally surrendered to its ivory tower detractors.
Point taken. I guess I was giving the benefit of the doubt to those liberals, like certain of my family members, who just believe Americans consume too much, thus depriving "others" of food and shelter. They are completely wrong but not vicious.
But, you are right – the politically active Left is ALL about POWER – POWER TO RULE. They hate humanity and want to break us to their will. They read and believe Nietzsche's 'Will To Power" -i.e. if you can enslave someone, then they deserve enslavement.
Bastards.
If you mean it was progress that improvements in sanitation, roads, civil rights etc. were made, you are right, but you can bet it was capitalist tax payers and not left wing parasites who paid for it all and are still paying for everything.
The only thing "progressives" ever did for mankind was take away their freedom and murder those who complained about.
I'll throw out a "here, here!" to the notion of repealing the 17th Amendment. I think the idea might give some powers back to the states, and force people to get interested in local elections again. With direct elections of Senators there is a fundamental deconstruction of the concept of states' rights (and power and individuality). The direct election of Senators also ensures the permanent electioneering/populism of candidates who are more concerned with getting "goodies" for the populace that will decide whether or not to send the Senator back versus balancing the represented state's needs versus the nation's needs as a whole.
Though not a cure-all (there would not, I'd wager, be a whole-sale elimination of the concerns mentioned above), it might go a long way to a little more stable government in congress and an exciting increase in involvement in state and local elections.
the sinner,
Patrick
This is classic leftist bullsh!t. The founders are old white guys only interested in lining their own pockets until they're not. Then they're deliberative gentlemen engaged in careful compromise
And re Tom Friedman's remark about China, what a pig. There are students from the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstrations who still–still–can't return to China to visit their elderly parents because they'll be arrested. For being involved in sit-ins and marches 20 years ago. There are people who've spent years in Chinese jails for writing editorials. Is that Friedman's idea of reasonably enlightened government?
These aren't people who don't know or don't understand history. These are thoroughly dishonest scum who see history as one thing–a tool for advancing their political ideology.
This is nothing new. It is a wordy rehash of the mantra "keep an open mind."
Of course, that admonishment only goes as far as agreeing with their point of view.
I guess Mr. Friedman's dictionary lacks a few definitions. Like individualism, objectivism, freedom, capitalism. But that's not his fault – for a semi-"r" word, he does okay.
The Left doesn’t even bother to hide its darker impulses any longer. While many American leftists held a deep affinity for communism and fascism, they did their best to hide it last century. Mark me as one glad they have let the mask slip to show their inner totalitarianism. We have watched an ideology triumph and then implode within a year. Perhaps this time it truly is gone; one thing is certain, any feigned anger about attaching proper labels to these ideologues only will be met with derision.
Technological Innovation = Progress =/= Progressivism
Social Maturity = Progress =/= Progressivism
You are confusing Propaganda of the Word for the functional definition of terms. Technological innovation and social maturation both existed long before Progressivism was created as an ideology.
Your conflation of the terms is not more reasonable than saying
Liberals = Libertarians
because they both start with "Liber-".
One might note that Rome had clean water systems and efficient sewer systems. Do you believe the Roman Senate, a plutocratic oligarchy, was a "progressive" form of government?
When you boil progressivism to its essence, you end up with this attitude: individual liberty is dangerous, because individuals cannot be trusted. Of course the alternative to individual liberty is collectivism and centralized state control. The state should be trusted because it is controlled by individuals who should be trusted, because they are special. How do we know that they are special? Because the collective says so. And the collective is comprised of individuals who cannot be trusted. So…oh, never mind.
Real democracy and mob rule are very hard to distinguish.
Most people vote with their hearts instead of their minds.
THAT IS WHY WE LIVE IN A REPUBLIC! (Yes, I was yelling.)

Big Pharma got big starting out small. Holistic purveyors can do the same if their remedies work as well. Good luck. So far, at least we can all do whatever we want and there are plenty of alternate cures to choose from. Problem is, they don't work.
The public-health approach can be applied to a population of just a handful of people or to the whole human population. Public health is typically divided into epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, social, behavioral, and occupational health are also important subfields
