This piece, by Andrew Ferguson in Commentary, is almost too easy, but it sure is fun. Did the little furry mammals tuck into the dinosaur eggs with so much gusto?
The tiny corner of the New York Times empire where David Barstow works is called the investigative unit. The name has an impressive urgency to it, like the title of a TV spin-off—CSI: Times Investigative Unit. You can imagine guys in Weejuns and khakis getting a hot tip and springing into action, yanking their tweed coats off the backs of chairs and shouting something irreverent and ironical over their shoulders as they bolt for the newsroom door.
Perhaps a new “torture memo” has been leaked; maybe a politician has committed an act of creative accounting on Supplement B (3) subpart vii of his financial-disclosure form. Or maybe a large number of Americans way out there in the land beyond the Bronx have been caught holding political opinions that are dangerously bizarre. TIU is on the case.

These strange-thinking Americans, loosely roped together as the Tea Party movement, sent David Barstow on his most recent investigation. His assignment lasted for five uninterrupted months and bore literary fruit, with a 4,500-word front-page story on February 16. “Tea Party Lights Fuse for Rebellion on Right,” the headline read—aptly enough, for a premonitory suggestion of bombs going off just over the horizon rumbled through Barstow’s story. To the astute Times reader lingering with the paper over breakfast, the hints were unmistakable.
There was the dateline, for one thing: Sandpoint, Idaho. The reader might rub his chin?.?.?.?-Sandpoint? Vaguely familiar…rings a bell…let’s see…Wait! God Almighty! Yes, that Sandpoint, notorious 15 years ago as the home of gun-slinging Randy Weaver and his Ruby Ridge survivalist compound, the headquarters of the Aryan Nation group of gun owners, a hothouse of gun-owning militias and paramilitary groups with their guns?.?.?.
Yes, it’s time to play”Christian Militia’s Comin’ To Git Ya,” one of the favorite sports of this guy:

In case you don’t recognize the former staple of the now-irrelevant Imus In the Morning radio program, that would be the well-fed former Times drama critic, Frank Rich, a non-bestselling author and a failed showbiz wannabee who somehow has parlayed this record of non-distinction into a prestigious corner lot among the most valuable journalistic real estate in America, where he carries water not only for the Democrat Party, but for the Times itself.
By now our Times reader would be drizzling flop sweat into the muesli: “Honey! Call the doorman! We’re getting the hell out of here!” The alarm ran through the Times newsroom, too, and a week later showed itself, reliably, in a column by Frank Rich, who is not only the exemplary Times writer but also the model Times reader. Barstow’s report was “chilling,” Rich wrote. “Anyone who was cognizant during the [Timothy] McVeigh firestorm would recognize the old warning signs re-emerging from the mists of history.” To more skeptical readers of the Times—a vanishing breed, since most people with a skeptical turn of mind have apparently given up on the Times altogether—the shudder that Barstow induced in Frank Rich looks like a case of classical conditioning, an exercise in stimulus-response as predictable as anything in Dr. Pavlov’s lab: Glenn Beck > Oath Keepers > secession > gun. Brrrr indeed.

The Tea Partiers declined to go along, though. From October, when Barstow first ventured into darkest Idaho, to February, when his story arrived to sound the alarm, their press coverage underwent a discernible shift in tone and attitude, even at the Times. “Tea Party Looks to Move from Fringe to Force” was the headline over a straightforward Times story written by Kate Zernike in early February. At ABC, a political correspondent suddenly discovered a new, friendlier Tea Party: “The majority of supporters are long-time Republicans,” she said, “but there are growing numbers of independents, and even some former Obama supporters.”
What changed? Everybody loves a winner, of course, even reporters, and the blindsiding victory of Scott Brown in Massachusetts proved that the Tea Party’s ideas could move an unlikely electorate. There was also the weight of reality, which given time can erode the most ardent fantasy: the movement didn’t contain enough Aryans and survivalists to sustain the caricature forever, and sooner or later a reporter runs out of Obama = Hitler signs with which to scare the customers.
It must be tough to run a major, albeit dying, newspaper when you have to keep changing your story on an almost daily basis, but such is the fate of the dinosaur media, caught between the asteroids and the marmots.

Read the whole thing, then over to you lot for more comment, correction and general merriment.

General merriment, indeed ~ it's fun to see them squirm as they try to avoid truth & reality
For my money, if they can keep their heads in the sand till November, America wins.
Excellent ……….
Poor leftists. They've done their best to smear the Tea Partiers. But whenever a reader looks into what these people actually stand for, it is so sensible and so appealing that they find themselves agreeing with this new and formidable force in America. The Teapartiers are responsible and thoughtful citizens with whom we feel much more aligned than with the dinosaurs at the NYTimes all of whom speak with a single voice and who have come down on the wrong side of every single issue facing this world for decades.
Maybe someone could explain to my why the teaparties – a group that claims to care about spending and that claims to worry about the far-left getting more power – has almost completely ignored an issue that raises spending and gives the far-left more power. And, it's a vital, very fundamental issue too, more fundamental than spending.
Yet, for some strange reason the teaparties have ignored that vital, fundamental issue.
Odd, almost like there's $ involved somewhere or something.
24Ahead: It's almost like you want me to … click … on … that .. link. Ooooh sorry, not gonna do it. I don't care about your pet issue and you're obviously quite out of touch if you think that TEA party people are paid to do anything. It's a grass roots movement and we protest, organize, or campaign whenever, where ever, and for whomever we want.
Advice to the Times: move your headquarters out to the middle of the country. Then you would actually be in touch with what is going on in America today. Nobody freakin' cares about you anymore.
Excellent, bjwilson.
Someone needs to set up a pool as to what and when the "Reichstag Fire" will be.
State-approved media continue to search for verification of "information" they've been publicizing for months.
Uh . . . their process of reporting is backward. Gather facts first! True ones! Whadya say?
Ah bjwilson my friend you are as wise as the Wilson who lived next door to Tim the tool man Taylor. I read 24's post myself and the only part I understood was that I was sposed to click on the blue writing. (I passed on that too~!)
Speaking about things we all know, I thought the great thing about Astro-Turf was that ya didn't have to cut it because it didn't grow? Apparently that Tea Party Brand of Astro-Turf didn't get the memo on that because its growin thick and green and TALLER EVERYDAY~! Yikes~!
As for the New York Times……..well ya know they're dyin but they just won't go to the grave without kicking and screaming. Seems maybe they should listen to their President and maybe "just take the pill".
How to form a racist, hate group.
1 – Gather Americans who know their rights and love their country.
2 – Pledge allegence to the Flag of the Unites States of America.
3 – Affirm that the Constitution of the Unites States is the law.
4 – Demand that your elected representitaves follow the law.
5 – Name the group "Tea Party"

The TEA Party is a cat herd…
As soon as we get all this straightened out, we'll get back to fighting amongst ourselves again…
But try to run over all of us with government…and we'll all dust off and set up all those Gadsden flags again, standing shoulder to shoulder against the tyrant…
It amazes me how worried the left is about the TEA Movement…I can get rid of the national organization in a year…
Re-dedicate government to Constutionalism…Limit taxes to every man, woman, and child to 10% maximum Federal, (all types), 5% state, and 2% in cities over three million in population. Limit corporate taxes to 12%. Balance any budget deficit through spending cuts only, (NO TAX INCREASES)…
If the government wants more money, institute business growth policies so people can always find a better paying job than their current one…and attract overseas businesses…we could empty Europe's corporations out of their continent in a flash…
NO GOVERNMENT SERVICES UNIONS…PERIOD…you work in government, you have no guarantees, just like the real world…
But there's no personal power in that for Congress or Administrations there…so the TEA Movement is going to be around for awhile…
Amen!
Government by the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) principal. What a radical concept, a government that functions by the Constitution! Mjolnir such a concept is Scary! (Not!)
Words have consequences, but so do unconstitutional governmental actions. Mr. Clinton, the illegitimate MSM, et al would have us believe that the popular uprising of the American People, which they define as being violent and racist, is an illegitimate expression of our constitutional rights. Indeed, the more that our elected representatives misuse and abuse their governance of the American People, the more they escalate and provoke the unrest and increase the possiblity that violence will ensue.
Actually the Obama = Hitler signs are recycled Bush = Hitler signs from the last — now silent — leftist protests. Never let a crisis go to waste, use those old signs and turn them into something new. Jodie Evans would be so proud if we painted some of them pink and decorated them with handcuffs.
Who still reads the NYTimes? I only read it if it comes up on websites like this. NYTimes is dishonest and boring.
With the NYTimes and others in the MSM, it's first HAVE an OPINION, THEN try to find some FACTS to PROVE it. When all else fails, MAKE IT UP.
Still, I wish al these leftist, fish-wrap rags would just die already. The only chapter of this saga I'm interested in reading is Chapter 11.
Actually, you want Chapter 7. Chapter 7 is liquidation, whereas Chapter 11 is reorganization. We don't want the beast rising out of the ashes
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapter_7,_Title_11,...
Sometimes these leftists leave a link for us to click on. That link could be to a website they control. When you access it, your IP address will be recorded. These days, an IP address is as good as your home address in finding you. Unless you bounce off a few proxies, they know who you are. Then they can forward your information to the REGIME so that they may know who needs to be "dealt with".
We all know that is how these brainwashed, dysfunctional, emotional children do things.
Never trust a lefty. Ever.
I get a warm and fuzzy feeling when I feel the guts being squeezed out of the little end of a liberal worm.
Finally, for those who refuse to live within reality;
“At the core of liberalism is the spoiled child – miserable, as all spoiled children are, unsatisfied, demanding, ill disciplined, despotic, and useless. Liberalism is the philosophy of sniveling brats.” – P.J. O’Rourke
About that power. How about making it illegal for any K Street lobbist to meet with any congressman or senator , including their staff, except in an open committee meeting. No more backroom deals. Lets make C-Span's ratings go through the roof.
Dude, if you're a troll, you're a dumb one. If you're a legit poster you're a dumb one. Because, either way, no one clicks on links that says "Click here" without actually saying why. Just like how everyone ignores those "1 lb a day" ads- if you click on it, you're just asking to be Phished.
I imagine Obama and his Alinsky-ites would want to orchestrate that some time closer to election.
Talk about wagging the dog!
That was an absolutely brilliant comment, Mjolnir. You really laid it out there. THANKS!!
Well said! You're obviously sharp. You should have chosen the name of a sword, not Thor's Hammer.
[...] » Overnight Thread: Crackpot Fringe Elements From Sandpoint, Idaho … [...]
I can offer an explanation. I think this is ignored (for now) to keep from diluting the current message. You can't fix everything at once. I agree that illegial immigration is prob the #2 problem right now. The most important issue to tackle is putting some sanity and accountability into the federal government. From that position of strength we can start to fix the other problems. I'm all for fixing the immigration problem.
My idea is to round up every illegial and ship them back home. Keep track of all the money spent to deport each person and deduct that amount from any aid given to the person's home country. Soon the Central and South American countries from which the problem originates will start to crack down on the problem themselves. They depend on that aid.
Ah, I stand corrected: Four chapters sooner. lol.
From the trail of one Timothy McVey, his actions were promted by outrage of what occured at The Branch Davidian Compound in Waco, Texas, actions taken by a Democrat Attorney General and a Democrat President. Tea Party followers are not radicals, they are rank and file Americans of every politcal party who have awaken to the reality that this administration is forcing the country in a direction we do not want to go. Radicals hail from the party Democrat and it leftist side, they burn buildings , attack opponents both verbally and physically. They were the WeatherUnderground(Bill Ayers) Frank Rich is a pathetic human being. His perpective is that of a child. Don't confuse him with facts, his mind is to small to accommodate such data.
sandpoint—isnt that where the world’s most famous racist, mark furhman, lives?
yes! sandpoint is racism central, USA!
this proves conclusively that all tea partiers are racists—the old gray lady was right all along!
(turn off sarcasmometer now, please)
Two of the three major debacles of recent Government aggression and over reach on it's own people under the guise of Social Order occurred on the watch of that progressive nitwit Comrade Clinton. The third one at Wounded Knee in seventy three under Nixon I will save for another day….
Ruby Ridge was a total disgrace and lack of American protection of Liberties combined with very bad police work…
The very same thing goes exponentially for Waco…David Koresh 'regulalry went into town himself' if the Government wanted him all they had to do was call the local Police Chief in Waco to pick him up the very next time he came in to town…Thus saving the lives of seventy four men, women, and children…
So what is it William Jefferson Clinton is most known for…A cigar and a F@ckin blue dress…..
Does this idiot even warrant an opinion?
The comment threads won't open for me today at any of the BIG sites. is something happening?
I have a genuine appreciation for Thor and Marvel Comics…
This is hilarious. I live in North Idaho. Had David Barstow actually done any research, he would have known that Sandpoint had nothing to do with Randy Weaver; the incident took place near Naples, Idaho, at Ruby Ridge, nearly 35 miles away from Sandpoint and much closer to Bonner's Ferry. Had he looked around, he would have also noted that Sandpoint is an island of bright blue surrounded by a sea f red-it is one of the most liberal cities in Idaho, populated with artists, musicians, ski and snowboard bums, pot growers, tie dyed dreadlocked multiply-pierced folks of all ages. Idaho even has (gasp!) populations of Hispanics, Asians and blacks! The Aryans were actually mostly in Hayden, 40 miles south of Sandpoint, but were run out years ago by the locals after they shot at a car that backfired and got sued into bankruptcy, losing their compound property and, forcing them to move on.
That's the problem with the left: regular Americans are caricatures, and their enemies are cartoons, straw man inventions they can then take apart and feel good about themselves in doing so.
There are few blacks at Tea Party rallies, therefore the Tea Parties must be racist, or so the stunning logic goes at the New York Times. Well, gee, there are few blacks at a Metallica concert. I guess that makes Metallica racists? Not many blacks at the opera. Racists?
How many black op-ed columnists at the NY Times? One? Looks like a glass house to me….
Even better…virtual meetings where the legislator spends most of their time in their home district, actually seeing their constituents…
If every lobbying group had to send out 535 highly-paid buttonholers for every Congressional Legislator; that would take some wind out of the sails…would you really enjoy going to, say, Charlie Rangel's district all the time…?
And no more collection of Federal and State taxes by deduction from payroll…EVERYONE would scream like bloody hell if they got their REAL paycheck, and then had to actually pay it (their deducted taxes) in person at some bulletproof glassed-in government drone booth like Thurgood at the HUD office in The Pj's, or had to deal with some kludge Governmental-entity website that makes no sense, takes too long, breaks down constantly, and is under constant attack by the anarchists and tax-freedom groups…
Great post! If we could get everything you mention done I would be happy.
The one thing I might change a bit is where the taxes go. I think the more things handled by local government where we have more say in what is done, and more knowledge of what will work in our area, the better. I'd want more taxes to go locally and less to go federally. The feds should stick to what they are supposed to do constitutionally.
Redstater…with all due respect. I believe the Weaver family if they were still alive would strongly disagree with your 'interpretation of their involvement in Ruby Ridge………
Good points.
Apparently these days to be an "media approved" movement you have to have the support of the black community. To be declared non racist you must have a certain percentage of blacks approve of your goals. They are the arbiters of right and wrong. They decide if your movement is worthy or not. Politically 95% or so of them voted for Obama, therefore no movement that disagrees with Obama can be approved and all who disagree with Obama are racists.
I din't make a single comment about the Weaver family's involvement in Ruby Ridge. Please, show me where I did. merely pointed out the geography involved and how the Times writer wanted to use Ruby Ridge to cast all of North Idaho as a sinister place. What am I missing here?
Oh, and most of the Weaver family are indeed still alive.
Apparently these days to be a "media approved" movement you must have the support of the black community. To be declared non racist you must have a certain percentage of blacks approve of your goals. Not sure what that percent is, but I think it has to be equal or better than that in the general population.
In the eyes of the simpletons in the msm the black community are the arbiters of right and wrong. They decide if your movement is media acceptable or not. Politically 95% or so of blacks voted for Obama, therefore no movement that disagrees with Obama can be media approved and all movements who differ with Obama's goals are racists.
had nothing to do with Randy Weaver; the incident took place near Naples, Idaho, at Ruby Ridge,
Nope, still don't see what you're on about. Weaver's property was near Ruby Ridge, which is outside of Naples. Are yo disputing this? Or are you misinterpreting what I'm saying? I don't see your point.
Dude, seriously…Randy Weaver did not live in Sandpoint. I have lived here most of my life. My point was that the media got it wrong- they got it wrong then, they got it wrong now. And Sandpoint gets painted with the racist separatist Aryan brush because of sloppy reporting.
I don't know where you live, but here it's 30-150 miles between towns of any size, and they can be as different as entering another country as far as politics and attitudes go. But Ruby Ridge is closer to Bonner's Ferry, not Sandpoint, and I can't let that slide. Sandpoint is a fun place to hang out.
Honestly, I don't have the slightest idea what your point is, so I can't agree to disagree. But I'll let it go.
Seriously, all you need to do is roll over the link to see what I'm talking about. And, a very basic search will show that I'm fairly well-known and I've been operating the linked site since 2002 (previous domain name lonewacko.com, changed for obvious reasons).
While you probably didn't cross the line, others should be very careful about making statements that will cause me to take legal action.
Thank you for showing for the umpteenth time just how dumb tea partiers are.
Unlike them and r/w bloggers, I actually opposed Obama before the election in an effective way; in fact, over three years ago I tried to ask him an adversarial question designed to discredit him. Around about the same time, the partiers were still supporting Bush even after all the things he did.
For a good intro to my coverage, here's a list of pro-illegal immigration groups that I cover. Each number in parens is the number of posts about that group.
I can offer a better explanation, and one more. Your leaders are on the other side. Most of the teaparty base might be on the right side (more or less), but they're as silent about their leaders' proclivities as they were about those of GWB.
First: What leaders? The TEA Party is a leaderless resistance.
Second: Most of us are concerned about the border, and have been since Clinton was in office. Some of us were concerned since before Bush I was in office, but it was less pressing back then.
Third: What part of "TAXED enough already" is confusing?
"While you probably didn't cross the line, others should be very careful about making statements that will cause me to take legal action."
Legal action? For expressing an opinion in a political forum? What, are you going to sue someone for thinking you might be dumb? You might be a little too thin skinned for forums.
I have to wonder who gave you thumbs down.
"When"? About two weeks before the election.
"What"? Riot. Some people pretending to be TEA party members, probably beating the cr@p out of college students or some minority group.
"Cameras, people, Cameras" !
How'd your post above get here?
Wilbil did not say he did.
Wilbil quoted what Ross quoted Ferguson as saying.
The number of blacks involved is not relevant.
This is like that old story told of the communist activist who said that he regarded anyone who disagreed with him an "enemy of the people", even if it was 90% of the population.
They have their doctrine, and anyone who varies from it is a "racist" or "right-wingnut extremist".
Then can you please explain to me what he's disagreeing with me about? Because so far he hasn't. He said the Weaver family would take exception to my interpretation of their involvement in in Ruby Ridge. Trouble is, I gave no comment about their involvement at all, and then quoted a piece of the article about the byline being in Sandpoint. So, if you can figure out exactly what his point is, please enlighten me, because I'm missing it completely.
I was wondering the same thing. Only thing I can think of is the "Hymie" handle. Either that , or Joseph of Steel has figured out a way to vote multiple times.
Umph.
I just went back over this, line by line. Looks like he forgot what he said in previous posts.
I'll pull my nose out of it now.
I lived outside of Sandpoint (most people do) during the time of which you all are speaking. Ruby Ridge, (what is known as the Weaver Incident) took place ON Ruby Ridge, near Naples, Idaho.
Some of the pre-invasion of Ruby Ridge occurred in Sandpoint, especially some of the recorded recorded evidence against the father, Randy Weaver.
Other places of note was Mt. Schweitzer, Idaho, a ski resort where FBI-HRT teams holed up and planned the initial raid. Randal Weaver and all of his daughters are still living last I knew. His son, wife and dog Striker were killed as the "last-standoff" progressed.
Sandpoint is probably used as it is the closest newspaper affiliate. Hence the word "filed." Same during the incident for the most part.
Weaver, and the standoff were a George Bush I operation…it had been ongoing between ATF and teh Weavers for quite some time. THe Weavers were a thorn in the side of republicans and especially the Bush I Administration. And a real problem for ATF moral.
This occurred during an election cycle which was the cause for the US Marshals to speed up the "problem" in Idaho. President Bush was not looking so hot in the polls, and the various Federal policing agencies, especially ATF and FBI were in funding wars back in DC. This only made matters worse.
A side note. There was about to a house burning in Ruby Ridge. They were going to start a fire and burn them out. At least those left alive. They had already sent up a robotic devise with a telephone, also containing a shotgun.
The fire is interesting for only two reasons. A bit before they did the same with an anti-gov guy, Matthews?, in Washington. Then we all saw the fire at Waco. patterns and practices. And I disagree about the political stance of people in those mountains. South Idaho is as Red as it gets. N. Idaho, thought to be blue, but in the mountains most people are apolitical. You can get in a pretty good fight just mentioning politics up there.
dumb as a box of rocks too
Look for it in late October. You, know, an "October Surprise". Something to give them an excuse to declare martial law for November 2. We shall see if the U.S. Army or National Guard recognize the fake.
Darn it. I'm having trouble with my hands jerking and gave you a down thumb. Sorry about that.
Oh, I can see how to vote several times, but it would be inconvenient. You may be right about the "hymie" handle.
I wish we had plus and minus seperately, and/or some way to see who is voting.
youre a moron, you threw out a hook but did not mention what you were talking about. Like some guy selling you something only after he gets you out of your comfort zone.
We see through you and tea partiers are dumb? apparently you equate us to tea partiers or something, you obviously came here with some predisposition about other people.
good luck with your legal action, i hear that is very effective on blog posters.
Teaparties dont have leaders, people get together, they are not very organized.
he confuses teaparties with the GOP
teaparties are unorganized, but they generally want to replace the encumbents for both parties.
teapartiers are not sheep like liberal protestors, these people will question any leadership
I can reply but I cannot read any other replies. the original replies are there but none that are subsets.
when does the racism begin on your timeline? lol.
She would be proud if they werent all so Hypocritical, if we do what they do we are evil. Why isnt it Code Rainbow? Code Pink sounds a little racist, choosing one color like that.
# resons:
1. The core issue of the Tea Parties is Federal spending, debt and taxation
2. The Dems haven't yet started their push to pass an amnesty bill
3. The Left has partly succeeded in their race-baiting campaign: Tea Partiers are somewhat paranoid about appearing "racist", which is EXACTLY how the Left smears anyone who opposes illegal immigration.
I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal.
People know me.
Um, I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books, and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.
Waaay too easy of a target. Thank you, 24. I've enjoyed myself.
For the Socialist Democrats, Step 1.
Thumbs up, Hymie. I've long wondered about this very thing.
