If you’re a fan of schadenfreude – and who isn’t, as long as you’re not its object — don’t miss the Night of the Long Knives at ABC News, currently being conducted in public over at the the New York Observer.
“Ugly” isn’t the word to describe the hatchets that are out for former ABC News v.p. and senior producer Mimi Gurbst, who recently announced her forthcoming retirement from the failing news operation to become — wait for it — a high-school guidance counselor.

What provoked this tempest was a May 11 sendoff in the pages of the Observer by Felix Gillette:
In recent years, when she wasn’t putting together stories as a senior producer for ABC’s World News or helping to oversee global news-gathering operations as a network vice president, Mimi Gurbst liked to advise her colleagues on various ways to improve their personal and professional lives.
Somewhere along the way, sources tell The Observer, Ms. Gurbst became a kind of cherished, if unofficial, career counselor at ABC News, helping countless young producers and correspondents find their way at a particularly tumultuous time in an already confusing business.
That did it. In have poured more than 125 comments, many apparently from present and former ABC News staffers, writing anonymously, who beg to differ with Gillette’s valentine to Gurbst as a kindly den mother. A sampling:
I’m sorry, but I find this story almost more than I can swallow. I spent the better part of 10 years at ABC News and Mimi Gurbst… was great with her stable of favorites and at best an obstructionist with those she didn’t like. This had nothing to do with qualifications of being a good journalist, it was simply reward and recognition for the sycophants who sucked up to her the most. ABC’s gain is some poor school’s loss…
Some rise in her defense:
Mimi helped lots of young people at ABC News who were neither well-connected nor from elite schools. Demonizing Mimi is weak and pathetic. Why is it always the female executive who is part of a “mean” group and mocked for her physical appearance? In my 15+ years at ABC News, the “mean boys” at ABC News caused far more damage than Mimi ever did… I just really hate that cowards are allowed to post vicious comments anonymously.
But the prevailing sentiment is overwhelmingly negative:
I spent more than a decade of my life as a producer for ABC… All this fury reminds me of that scene after the fall of Saddam Hussein – the one where all the angry little people push over his enormous statue, and it topples to the ground. Truth has a way of bubbling to the surface. Even in a newsroom.
The comments range far beyond Gurbst, however, heading up the food chain at ABC all the way to the top, and painting a pretty ugly picture of the news division. It will be interesting to see what, if anything, ABC’s reaction will be, but you can bet that Monday morning is going to be pretty ugly on W. 66th Street in Manhattan.
But the real story here is not Gurbst: it’s how the blogosphere has changed the balance of power. In the old days, a retirement — even one publicly noted — would have passed largely without mention; today, thanks to the internet, anyone can comment, most often anonymously, dragging the entire alleged back story into the public realm.
Is this citizen-journalism — or perhaps unchained journalist-journalism — or back-stabbing gossip? Over the past decade or so, the MSM has gone in for gossip itself in a big way, destroying its credibility in its lust for flash and trash. As the poet says: karma’s a bitch.

karma’s a bitch? So is PAYBACK!
Stay focused folks. November is a long way away. Look no farther than SEIU and all of the other maggots and leeches in "Union Leadership" who are about to deploy a mission to keep the power grip….they paid so dearly. They know if they lose in November it will be lights out for their ambitions to unionize the whole damn country.
Makes sense doesn't it? We all pay union dues and then we all pay taxes. Tony Soprano could only dream of a plan that ambitious.
Stern and Trumka et al. Payback is a bitch. Karma? I'll leave that to whomever or whatever hovers over your future.
This is a little too much inside baseball could you elaborate some more Mr. Ross?
"…Senior producer Mimi Gurbst, who recently announced her forthcoming retirement from the failing news operation to become — wait for it — a high-school guidance counselor."
So, essentially she's making a lateral move, albeit to a clientele generally much less deluded about their true abilities and profoundly less pretentious about their own importance to a healthy society.
"If you’re a fan of schadenfreude – and who isn’t, as long as you’re not its object "
That's a keeper.
On a side note, is National Review going a little wussy these days? Except for Steyn, there appears to be a growing number of beta males posting lately ,I give you Robert Costa and Jim Manzi as examples.I hope this great publication doesn't become Frumized.
These MSM dinosaurs who push their progressive agendas on average Americans, deserve to have their hate filled lives dragged in to the light of public scrutiny.
As Freddie Mercury said, "Another one bites the dust"!
Amen, Brother…
Maybe they will do us all a favor and kill each other.
Best line ever: "If you’re a fan of schadenfreude – and who isn’t, as long as you’re not its object "
Hey, Mimi, how about defending yourself?
(Chum the water a little, you know.)
"Truth has a way of bubbling to the surface. Even in a newsroom."
What does that statement tell you about the MSM? They cut their own throats. A plague on all their houses.
"Truth has a way of bubbling to the surface. Even in a newsroom."
Between the big pieces.
(phew, gag, choke)
I started reading the comments for the article hours ago, and couldn't stop. (And I suggest everyone do the same. Very entertaining).
Yeah, they affirmed what I (and most others on the right) have known for a long time – that the MSM is a stinking cesspit of vipers and scorpions.
But while reading, I had the feeling that I was missing something. I mean, the theme was obvious and nearly unanimous; this Mimi Gurbst person was a horrible boss who always put her own interests and preferences – personal and professional – first.
Those poor people who had to work for her – one woman, according to a commenter, has nightmares about this witch, and it's been ten years since she worked there. Some poor souls have had to endure this woman's bullshit for twenty years!
As I was considering this, it hit me. What I was missing was this:
"Poor souls", my ass!
These stupid fuckers allowed this harpy to make their lives miserable. Who stays in that kind of environment for more than a few weeks or months?
But that's not the worst part.
The worst part is, they all knew that ABC News was suffering because of this woman, and they did nothing.
Screw 'em.
They got what they deserved.
Wow, sometimes the boss treats the suck-ups better than the hard workers. Thanks for the heads-up!
Just by the way (having read the comments at The Observer), I say this viper should not be allowed to infect adolescents with her poison. As others have commented, Harvard should be vetting its applicants a bit better. Then again, I'm sure she will fit right in at Harvard, that once respectable institution of "higher" learning.
Schadenfreude is right! So many so-called journalists in the Medialoid (Mainstream media infected with tabloid mentality) have made their careers off of destroying people with their lies and innuendo, it would be Poetic Justice if all those who destroyed the integrity of the media should feel the sharp blade of insult and slander on their own flesh. I hope these jackals all turn on eachother and destroy eachother as they have done for years to the all the truly creative people of this world. They have caused a lot of harm and pain and it is time they got back a little of what they have been dishing out. Karma, karma, karma!
If you think this is something, just wait for the fallout when Olbermann leaves MSNBC to start a new career as a sanitation engineer. Well, it wouldn't actually be a NEW career; tossing garbage around is what ol' Olby has been doin' for years.
Someone ought to write an, "Ode to Schedenfreude." Beethoven's melody would work perfectly – and I have a spiffy solo guitar arrangement of it – but I'm not a lyricist… not in German, anyway (Which would be the only way to go!).
I just spent the past hour and a half reading the comments on the Observer article. I was worried someone was going to wipe the article off the web and then delete all the comments. The anger there is palpable. Employees got shafted and the news channel suffered in the Disney buyout. All I know is that ABC was always on in the background of my life. I spent days with GMA and David Hartmann, FYI with Hal Linden, Evening News with Harold Reynolds. All that came to a crashing end with the Charlie Gibson interview with Sarah Palin. I deal with pompous, arrogant idiots (like Charlie) everyday in my life as a business owner. I would have taken the glasses off the end of his nose and shoved them down his throat…then walked off. So, no more ABC, no more MSM, no more network programming for me. As for the anger at the employees…it's must be tough when you are building a career and have a family to support. I guess the decision must be…how much butt do I have to kiss to get ahead? It is a scary thought that someone of her ilk could possess that kind of power. Never would happen in my business world. Lawsuit city.
It's time for the people in the liberal media to stop being "greedy" and start "giving back" and paying their "fair share" by becoming useful to society like being a high school counselor. We look forward to the day Katie Couric can become useful to society.
Boy, ABC news. The only name I can think of from there is Diane Sawyer.
Yep, don't recognize any of those names. http://www.gogomag.com/talkingheads/misc_abc_f.ph...
NICE ONE!

She'll be able to warp their minds before they even have a start, great. I'll make sure my grand kids minds aren't corrupted by people like them if its the last thing I do in my life. I will knock on as many doors as it takes to turn my state from blue to red in the next few years.
Have you noticed Fox leaning a bit lately? They must not be getting interviews. O'Reilly looking for another Obama interview because I've noticed Bill sides with "The One" a lot more lately.
Hopefully, its not dancing.
Although I will admit, I've almost quit watching Fox, occasionally I surf by for a few minutes, and I'm
always disappointed. There was some kind of flap between Carlson and Kilmead one morning
last week, frankly I was on the puter reading the open thread, and missed the gory details, but it
seemed to me Brian was not following the 'new Regime rules' provided by the oHugo jr Regime
so Gretchen felt compelled to overcompensate for his lack of judgment, which he seemed not to
appreciate. I wanted an instant replay, but unfortunately a little tiff like that will never see the light
of day.
Looks as if the troops are losing their nerve, Steve has a whole different demeanor. O'Reily needs
to get the body language gal to analyze F&F. Seems the Regime is whipping them like a $2 burro.
O'Reily himself waxes and wanes as he has for several years. With campaign season coming he
would love to snag some important interviews, so he's forced to play the Regime's game. He's not
very conservative anyway and he'll tell you so.
Causes one to wonder if the Regime has 'minders' on the set with the on air personalities to approve
or deny their scripts. Are we the USSA yet?
Hey, watch-a you mouth. Sanitation engineers provide valuable public services, and actually need to know what they're doing.
Will the last person to leave ABC News please turn out the lights.
Joe,,,,,,,,,,, my, my dear sir,……….seems you may have over-dosed on whining pap while reading all those
comments. True, they all did get just what they deserved.
Reading the comments at the ABC blog — coming from ABC newzers — was kinda like watching a girl fight in a schoolyard. It was hilarious to watch liberals throwing hissy punches and pulling Mimi's hair out in gobs.
Made me ever-wishful for a Amy Robach vs. Contessa Brewer mud wrestle!
One Lib schill replaces another, is there some bit of interesting news here?

So what is so different at this workplace? My father often gave me good advice. When I was unhappy at a great job in retail, he told me to stop complaining and live with it, or get a new job. Easy. I once worked in a bar where the owner/boss was this bad. Guess what? I soon worked at another bar.
Schadenfreude Goetterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium!
Wow, so imagine that retail manager or restaurant manager you worked for who made yor lives (and everyone else's) retires and somebody writes an incorrectly glowing ode to these individuals skills as managers. You wouldn't feel compelled to set the record straight? This is what good journalists do for a living so before people condemn us as petty liberal elites, keep in mind that this was all started by a media writer at the Observer who wrote an incorrect story. Mimi's "retirement" would have passed unnoticed otherwise.
Perhaps you sould some posts which are more your speed and depth.
I can't tell if you trying to be deep or just living up to your handle, but this post for all of it's 4 paragraphs makes absolutely no since at all.
Reading yankee angst is like watching mules fight over a turnip…..entertaining but a waste of time in the final analysis.

Since you didn't work at ABC I'll forgive your blame the victim post. There was nothing – repeat NOTHING – that underlings could do to fight the power. Mimi's reign of terror was supported and enabled by those above her. If you weren't one of her chosen minions then you were deadwood. It was the responsibility of those above her – nicknamed "the 5th floor" – to control her. Why they didn't is an open question. In the meantime hundreds if not thousands of careers were stalled or outright destroyed because of this sociopath.
