The arc of the MSM is at once predictable and satisfying, especially when it comes to the liberal media’s slowly dawning realization that the Obamessiah ain’t all they cracked him up to be. First, a willful decision to opt for fantasy over reality, then denials, then the most modest of criticisms (delivered more in sorrow than in anger), then the who-cares turn of the worm, then outright hostility, then the acceptance of defeat… and finally, Jimmy Carter-like, rehabilitation and reassement.

In the “Being There” presidency of Barack Obama, we have now arrived somewhere between step 4 and step 5, the part of the movie where the media, having been treated like cheap slatterns, drabs and courtesans, wakes up one morning face down in the gutter and realizes she’s no good. Not yet ready to start regaining her lost dignity, she blames herself for the misfortune than has befallen her lover — she’s not worthy!
The occasion for these reflections is the disastrous Oval Office, empty-desk speech made by the president manque the other night as he attempted to convince the nation that he is, in fact, in charge of something other than his malevolent shredding of a Constitution he obviously so clearly despises. It was a speech panned by nearly everybody (except the reliably ridiculous Paul Begala, a man who gives the word “toady” a bad name), made all the more risible by the ludicrous sight of Obama sitting behind the empty Resolute desk, like a ’60s college radical who’s briefly occupying the president’s study. From a thumb-sucker by Adam Nagourney in the New York Times:
On blogs, on a blur of cable news shows, on magazine Web sites, in the morning newspapers, the verdict within 12 hours was nearly unanimous: Mr. Obama’s speech on Tuesday night about the oil spill had been pedantic, vague and uninspiring — a lost opportunity.
“It’s the first Obama speech ever panned by the talking heads,” Mike Allen reported in the Politico Playbook.
But so what? Does it really matter if you lose the pundits anymore?
Sure — what do they matter? The Times and other major newspapers employ people like Maureen Down and Frank Rich and Paul Krugman precisely because nobody gives a fig about their opinions of current events!

And, while we’re at it, let’s blame bloggers:
There was a time when the after-action takes of big commentators were sought out by Americans trying to assess the latest news coming out of the capital. They helped drive public opinion.
But tracking influences on public opinion has become greatly complicated now that the once-exclusive club has been joined by the vast multitudes blogging or posting Twitter updates or otherwise opining online, with a select few doing so after offering instant analysis on television. Mr. Obama had barely begun his speech when various commentators began a running review on Twitter.
It is not just the number of commentators or the abundance of platforms that is diluting the influence of the mainstream media, but their speed. Opinions are being served up so fast that in this case many of them were stale by the next morning.
“Things have expanded so much,” Dennis Ryerson, the editor of The Indianapolis Star, said on Thursday. “Forty years ago, newspapers ran opinion pieces by a lot of columnists, most of whom were in Washington. They had a good following and were widely respected. But now anyone with a cheap computer can become a columnist or a pundit. The definition has changed. More people are in the game right now.
And better people in many cases as well. The gatekeeper media is done; even the Times can no longer drive the agenda the way it used to. In the old days, news wasn’t news until the paper said it was news, after which its lead would dutifully be followed by the Washington Post, the three networks and the two major newsweeklies.
But them days is gone — the Times’s website is both heavily trafficked and informative, but the power of its opinion columnists has largely dissipated, except among the die-hard dead-enders of West End Avenue in Manhattan. A series of recent news events (the Helen Thomas story comes to mind) have originated and played themselves out in cyberspace, and the first time the print readers knew about the story was after it was over.
And so it is with their columnists — opinions that are both irrelevant and out of date the moment they hit the subscribers’ doorsteps. Opinions so irrelevant, in fact, that not even the Times takes them seriously any more.
So why should we?

I used to do the NYT crossword online, but I don't even go there for that anymore. And I wouldn't wrap dead fish in their dead trees.
Richard Marxist Asks: Who Cares If the NYT Goes Under?

Hilarious
Thomas Jefferson was correct when he opined more then 220 years ago…
"A sensible woman who listens to TalkRadio, is better informed than an "intelligent" man
who reads nothing but the NYTimes "fishwrap"…

Obama gone golfing while oil continues to ruin Gulf beaches and fisheries.
OMG! Where did that come from, son!
All I am seeing from this administration is finger pointing. What this country needs is a leader, plain and simple. We want our government to use the assets we already have. Like the Navy, Coast guard, because we need their expertise in these matters. They have all of the equipment that would be very useful for this particular problem. If anybody in Washington is reading these post's, what more do you need?
Get busy, enough with the blame game. GET TO WORK NOW!
http://goooh.com/home.aspx
OH! No, no, no what will we do if the left should ever get it? Present at the country club while the gulf bleeds its oil. Shameful.
Sharron Angle listens to TRadio
BHObama read the NYTimes
Tom is correct ….case closed …….
The campainer and chief was way off message. But this was a crisis not of his making so somebody actualy has to make a descision that isn't pre-gamed out in the Progressive locker room.
Proof positive that Obama and the Obamatons are clueless. They have never solved problems only identified what they thought were problems, isolated the target, villified it and collected $$$. ACORN/SEIU anyone!
TJ RULES! You're right.
Well, if any one would know irrelevance it would be the Times. They and irrelevance have become fast friends. The twist and turns of the progressive mind are absurd with their endless efforts to obfuscate their incompetence and failures, the out and out lies, the attempts to accuse others of what they themselves do. They are so predictable and tiresome.
Hey guys, the NY Times totally has worth: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06/05/man-...
…if you've got some kinda crazy bucket list.
My wife and I must have been some of the unlucky saps who watched the "big" speech. And you know, it's funny, but the first thing my wife said was, "Obama looks so small and thin behind that desk, almost like a kid." And that's exactly what he is, a kid pretending to be president of the United States. We live in dangerous times, folks, and I just pray that a major international incident doesn't explode somewhere around the world during the next two years, because if it does, we are toast. At least the Gulf oil spill, while tragic and will cost billions to clean up, will not fundamentally endanger the balance of power in the world. Iran getting a nuclear bomb will, or North Korea attacking South Korea could also be a major disaster. And let's not forget the war in Afghanistan isn't going that well, either. The presidency is a job for experienced adults and not little boys who want to play president. Remember, politics is often a game of perception and right now most of the world sees our president as a naive kid, and that's not a happy spot for us to be in.
Doesn't really matter what the Gray Lady's (or the Gray Lady with the red dye job) pundits are saying now. The Times' liberal columnists (plus whatever David Brooks is classified as) have battered wife syndrome. They may be mad at Obama right now, but in 2012 they'll get the vapors over whomever the Republicans nomination and come running back to protect the Sun King because of the nightmare the see for America if the racist, fascist GOP fundies get control of the White House back again.
you're right- no matter who the (R) candidate is in 2012, the NYT, et. al. will miraculously decide they would make things far, far worse than Dumbo & Dumber II.
"But them days is gone….the gatekeeper media is done."
….heh, they are indeed – heck, HiPlainsDrifter gets published more often than Krugman, Dowd and Brooks combined…!
….he's a lot wiser and funnier…..and more people read him !….
I agree as well. What worries me though is when will our current Repubs decide to grow some balls and DO their jobs for a change? Right now, I want Repubs back as a majority but they too have many issues that need to collectively get corrected. Sure as we're discussing this, MSM's will get that second breath in a couple years and push all candidates non-Repub, Tea Party supported and every other political party joining the parade. As far as the MSM's are concerned, Dems/Libs rule.
It's cool seeing that "deer in the headlights" look though.
Are you a Producer or Parasite ?
Democrats – Party of the Parasites
"…having been treated like cheap slatterns…" How eloquent. I appreciate your depiction of the lap dog media as- lonely street walkers. Bravo for your bravado. I would have called them whores, but I digress.
WE NEED A NEW VILIAN!
First it was a report from DHS and Napolitano that Returning Veterans are the VILLAINS.
Second it is those Wall Street fat cats that did not donate enough to Obama that are the VILLAINS.
Third it is the the Bond holders of Chrysler & GM that are the VILLAINS.
Forth it is Toyota that are the VILLAINS.
Fifth it is the Tea Partiers that are the VILLAINS.
Sixth it is the Banks that are the VILLAINS.
Seventh it is Big Corporations that are the VILLAINS.
Eighth it is the Hondurans that are the VILLAINS.
Ninth it is the Israelis that are the VILLAINS.
Tenth it is GOP that are the VILLAINS.
Eleventh it is Doctors that are the VILLAINS.
Twelfth it is the Hospitals that are the VILLAINS.
Thirteenth it is those racist Arizonans that are the VILLAINS.
Fourteenth it is BP that are the VILLAINS.
Fifteenth it is those Senators this week that did vote for increased spending that are the VILLAINS.
Sixteenth it will be all Americans that do not bow to Obama's Cap & Tax that are the VILLAINS.
A VILLAIN a month keeps Obama a happy President.
Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah. That's all I hear out of this guy. Hot air.
During his campaign, the MSM reported that people where fainting at his rallies because of his oratorical skill and star power.
So I have a question: Has anything positive ever resulted from one of his majesty's speeches?
[...] the Original article Tags: Asks:, Cares, Obama, Pundits Comment (RSS) [...]
Yeah, but he has set up multiple commissions, and nicely asked BP to "contribute" $20 billion to a fund to help those affected by the oil leak, and he's made many speeches concerning this. Cut the guy some slack. He's been so busy fixing this problem, that he has to golf (and travel and have lavish parties with multiple celebrities who serenade his wife) to clear his mind so he can better serve "we the people." (Please note the sarcasm.)
I forget where I saw it, but I saw someone lamenting the trend of political blogs. They expounded on how awful it is that "rumor" gets started and spread on the net. What they really meant was that they could no longer control the message. And it's always the right leaning blogs that are the rumormongers in their opinion– which is totally predictable. Sure there's rumor, but there's also a lot of truth that is getting through and the rumors are usually debunked pretty quickly. It's bad enough we're stuck with an Obama presidency, but I can't imagine how screwed we'd be if we were only able to get our news from the New York Times.
The American spirit is alive and well as seen in these comments. We are awake, alert, vigilant, reading our Constitution, and many books: such as The Five Thousand Year Leap, the Bible, the Bill of Rights, Original Intent, The Real George Washington, Atlas Shrugged, Common Sense by Glenn Beck (fabulous), (Hannity's) Road to Victory, and many, many more GREAT books. Get to know the original founders' documents yourself. Google "original source" history documents and READ them. You MUST read these documents to be well informed. We have been lied to for many years: first by public schools, then the media. The jig is up. The"socialist plan" was to take over the Democratic Party, and they did it. Socialism is just the first step to actual communism; they have been stealthily infiltrating our government, our universities, our high schools, community colleges, media, and we were all asleep. Now Jim Wallis, self-professed communist (PBS interview) is trying the takeover of the churches through leftist poverty guilt talk through the "deconstructed" emergent church. "Social justice" = communism, people! Reject it soundly. Reading and sharing is the key, following by VOTING ALL SOCIALIST LOOTERS OUT!!!!
from "All the news that's fit to print!" to "They piss on your head and we tell you it's raining!"
All I have to say is THANK GOD for the internet because a LOT of people now have their eyes OPEN. We all use to rely on MSM for all of our news and they spoon fed us whatever the HELLo they wanted us to ingest, not anymore, we are OVER them, Well MOST of us anyway. I can't believe how many years have been LOST on those MSM hacks, it makes me want to barf when I think of how many people still rely on them for "news".
Does this mean that for the first time in Obama's presidency, the MSM aren't proud of their country, because it doesn't feel like hope is finally making a comeback?
Barry is losing it, he is probably smokin' dope again. His inner circle cleans him up, puts some stuff on the teleprompter and hope he can still read it, but, listen to him when he doesn't have a script to read, he is completely befuddled.
The public only sees him for brief periods because his handlers can only keep him straight for brief periods. 20 minutes with BP, 15 minute speech in Ohio, even the brief Oval Office speech, with teleprompter, was mechanical and out-of-touch with reality.
You Liberal saps better keep him happy, keep praising him, you know, kinda like potty-training. Keep him playing golf and shooting hoops but above all…
YOU BETTER HOPE AND PRAY HE SCREWS UP THE LAUNCH CODES WHEN HE DECIDES TO COMMIT GLOBAL SUICIDE!
Armageddon… http://usataxpayer.org/htm/vids.asp?A=29229008
I usually hear the man's words as the "wah wah wah" of the teacher in Peanuts, but "blah blah blah" works, too.
In response to your question…let me think for a second…no.
[...] » NYT Asks: Who Cares If the Pundits Hate Obama? – Big Journalism [...]
Pundits, schmundits!
Who listens to these people, much less takes their opinions seriously?
With greater access to FACT and Opinion, by way of the internet, and sites like this one….'pundits' and their bought and paid for opinions, are fading away daily.
A better question would be–Who cares what the New York Times thinks?
That's such an excellent observation. I never really thought about that much before, but you're right: they really do keep him on a short leash to prevent him from floundering in public.
This is precisely why the FCC is trying to take over the Internet. It's the last bastion of free speech left in this country. I well remember how annoyed my parents and I would get when these MSM types would dissect a presidents speech right afterward and put their spin on it. The same for election nights. The worst was when Walter Cronkite sat behind his big newsdesk every evening and told us we were losing the Viet Nam war even after decisive victories! The MSM sees their power slipping away and since the MSM and the Dem Party and one and the same they are pulling out all the stops to place the Internet under government control. The latest is now that these MSM newspapers are going to require full ID on their newsites, no more anonymous blogging. Basically they are wanting us to shut up, sit down and keep eating shovelfulls of their exrement sandwiches. Sorry but no thanks.
And that's why we call him TJ, even unto this very day. GO THOM!!
