If you want to see a good example of a reporter/critic who’s grown fat and sassy in his job and has been reduced to phoning it in, take a good look at Tom Shales:

The Pulitzer-Prize winning TV critic was once one of the brightest bylines in the Post’s Style section, but like anyone who’s stayed too long in a job (Shales began at the Post in 1972 and became TV critic five years later), he’s pretty much condemned to an endless rehash of previously expressed opinions and long-held beliefs. The only thing that’s changed is that he — like, apparently, every other writer on the Post — has come out of the journalist’s “impartial” ideological closet and now feels free to opine about all sorts of things.
Case in point, this crack, which comes at the end of his professional obit of Larry King, the Methuselah of talk-show hosts who recently announced he was hanging ‘em up on CNN. After spending the bulk of his column on his assessment of King’s career — arguing the strange theory that King wasn’t loud, boorish or attitudinal enough to compete in the modern era of Confrontation TV, instead of the more reasonable assumption that King had simply run out of gas after 25 years — Shales pulls the following rabbit out of his hat:
Not that every person who helms a talk show on these networks is guilty of coarsening the conversation. But the big noises, the most prominent personalities, seem also to be the most shrill and hostile. They set the standard, substandard though it may be.
And what happens on television invariably affects — and sometimes infects — American life, manners and mores. In March, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) was shocked to be jeered and vilified by anti-health-care-reform demonstrators on Capitol Hill who used the most vile of racial epithets when screaming at him.
“It surprised me,” Lewis said afterward, “that people are so mean, and we can’t engage in a civil dialogue and debate.”
If he’d watched more cable TV, Lewis might not have been quite so surprised.
What?
Leaving aside for the moment the out-of-left-field cheap shot as the column’s kicker, the incendiary “n-word” allegations have essentially been debunked, as you can read here, here and here and here. Andrew Breitbart has offered $100,000 to anyone who can produce indisputable evidence that racial epithets were hurled at Rep. John Lewis and others during the emotional protests against the health-care bill on March 20. So far, no takers.
So why did Shales, barely able to reach from his La-Z Boy recliner to spin his his handy newspaperman’s Lazy Susan for a choice metaphor, come up with this particular one?

Because, all the evidence to the contrary notwithstanding, he not only wants to believe — wants to believe the worst of his fellow citizens, of the Tea Partiers and of Americans who disagree with him and his bien-pensant Beltway buddies — he has to believe it.
For if it’s not true — and it isn’t — then part of his carefully constructed fantasy world comes crashing down: the part that attributes only ill will to his political opponents, and refuses to accept that they are anything other than what the Left says they are: racists.
The Congressional Black Caucus deliberately fanned the flames of race hatred with its baseless accusations (tailor-made to fit the pre-existing journalistic narrative), and even though his own newspaper has long since walked back the charges, Shales continues carry their water.
Shame on you, Tom.

someone who was there needs to start a defamation law suit against the three of them for mega bucks!!!! Put your money where your mouth is
I doubt a defamation suit would progress very far. But something needs to be done to put these claims more substantively under the microscope.
This whole "it is as I say it is BECAUSE I say it is" crap just isn't cutting it any more.
Oops darn it I thought Shales was in the gulf skimming 21000000 gallons of oily water a day. Apparently it does appear I was mislead. Clearly that apppears to be some form of animal fat he is skimming and not out of the gulf of Mex. Some pasta restaurant somewhere. His ideology is as bloated as he is.
Shales have you heard of green leafy veggies?
I was under the impression that's exactly what we're doing around the Big sites.
)))))
The times they are a changin'.
Come on now. There is more than enough material in his writing so that we don't need to resort to the obvious fat jokes.
Leave the repugnant sophomoric insults to the riffraff on the left.
How about his inability to even see the videos right in front of his own arrogant, jaundiced eyes.
I had to drive a cab in the stpete fl area for a 7 month period. Frankly I learned one important lesson. The most racist segment of our society appears to be black. At least one in 5 or so black customers either shorted the fair, outright ran on the fair, argued about a deposit before the ride, called me a racist for wanting full payment. That list goes on and on. Are all blacks racist? No of course not. However the percentage that are seemed huge to me. So now we know that it is the upper level elite blacks who pour their racist white hating garbage down the throat of the everday black person.
Blacks don't have a snowballs chance in hades till they remove those and that type of tyrant from their government.
You're right Ed. I just couldn't pass up the whale in the gulf. I promise I will attempt to me more level headed.
That's clearly the idea.
But let's face it: there aren't that many progressive sheeple reading the Big sites. They're a big part of the problem that needs to be addressed.

Oh believe me, I understand the urge. No one loves a "Your momma's so fat…." joke better than I do.
But that's the game they play. And if you're playing their game, they're making the rules. They also tend change them when it suits their needs. Which gives them the appearance of winning, when in fact they're beached whales*, flopping around in the sand, taking their last gasps.
The way to combat this is to not let them make the rules.
* Notice the way I worked that one in.
That's how you do it.
We do that by education.
"I know of no safe repository of the ultimate power of society but the people. And if we think them not enlightened enough, the remedy is not to take power from them, but to inform them by education." – Thomas Jefferson
Here at the Big sites, we learn the truth of what's really going on, what the MSM isn't telling us, and we use that to educate our family, friends and strangers.
The Big sites are not an authority, its a fountain of ideas.
Who is Tom Shales and why are you talking about him?
The question is: to where does this fountain of ideas run?
Metaphorically speaking, it isn't enough for that water to gather in a single pool. Even if it flows out to the rest of the world through a canal, those passing will still have the choice of whether or not to drink.
But at least more people will be confronted with the choice.
I agree, darski,
One thing I learned early on. I own a copyrighted website. I was told by my attorney that I MUST FIGHT EVERY INFRINGEMENT EVERY TIME OR NO JUDGE WILL HONOR MY COPYRIGHT.
In other words, if you're not willing to DEFEND YOUR RIGHT, IT HAS NO STANDING IN LAW.
The claim made by the CBC is on record. They made the charge in public and it has appeared in many MSM articles and segments. IT IS PUBLIC AND UNTIL PROVEN, IT IS SLANDER. THE PROOF IS ON THE CBC, NOT THE FOLKS PROTESTING. ALL ANYONE AT THAT RALLY HAS TO DO IS DEMAND PROOF. AS A CLASS ACTION KNOWN AS THE TEA PARTY OR THE "KILL THE BILL GROUP" ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS FILL A SUIT AND DEMAND CBC PROVE IT'S SLANDER OR RETRACT IT.
Some lawyer out there would take that case if for nothing but the publicity. All it takes is filing suit. Until then, it's all just ranting. I wasn't there. But anyone who was, or the group organizers could do it.
Or they can just keep bitchin and moanin about it here.
no brainer, that one.
See, another example of ignorance. Why is it if you are a liberal and disagree with the direction of the country it is free speech, but if you don't buy into the liberal agenda when their party controls everything you are racist and inciting sedition? Can everyone who has a brain please explain to these people that by simply throwing around racial epithets (if they had happened at all) it is in fact not racism at all, it is referred to as bigotry. And not agreeing to Obama's agenda is not racism it's referred to as having a differing opinion.
Thank you for your time!
The Big sites aren't anywhere near the only fountain. It's one that, thanks to the internet, we can reach. The main reason I'm rooting for the MSM to go down in flames is so that something better will rise from the ashes.
Its the same reason I want the democratic party to crash and burn. There are a lot of good people who think they are left and vote democrat because that's simply what they've always done. I would love to shock them out of that. The break up of the party would do it, and as a former insider, eight years of Bush came really close to doing just that.
The left is a house of cards. The rise of Obama and the current Congress are not a resurgence, they are the flailing of a dying movement. They may have a couple of more acts left in them, but the boomers are moving on in years.
The real problem is with the generation who raised them, schooled them, indoctrinated them. That is where the battle lies. Reality will take its toll, which is why many people on the left move on. But we need more than that. We need education.
Is that Tom Shales or Tom Whales??
That guy has a bad case of "Hog Jowls".
Don't ya just know that none of the other cool kids will play with him unless he provides the video games and the snacks.
[...] » Reaching For a Metaphor, Lazy Shales Repeats ‘N-Word’ Lie – Big Journalism [...]
To paraphrase an old adage, those who win the war, write the history. Right now, the left feels they have won the war and it is within their right to write the history as they see fit. There are enough stupid people out there (case in point, the 40% who still support Pres Obama) that believe that word was used and this “journalist” justifies their beliefs. As it has already been pointed out in the comments section, these people think that if something is repeated often enough, then the narrative will change. There are people who still believe that Bristol Palin is the mother of Sarah Palin’s little boy and Andrew Sullivan will keep beating that drum not matter how much evidence is lined up against his belief.
OR, as someone on the BigGov site posted how he found some patriotic sites by looking at his dollar bill. The sites were written along the bottom.
All my money will have these Big sites written along the bottom. Can you think of a better way to help promote and educate people? I think it's brilliant.
If you repeat a lie enough times it becomes the truth.

Tom who??? Works for Washington what???
Ed
OK …He looks and sounds like Michael Moore's evil twin….
You, my friend need an avatar…
I'm tired of the redX..
How bout Lech Walesa? you like him. No?…
Looking at Shales, I thought there were hungry people in America. Bet the tard is on disability too.
Ok, I'll hold the cheesecake joke, but I'll thumb you up anyway for beached whale metaphor.
Did he eat one of the other panelists?
I knew this guy was crap years ago when he wrote a book on how good "Saturday Night Live" was. He is an irrelevant fat ass nobody.
This guy believes that he and his liberal friends know whats good for me? Is that the belief you speak of? He looks like a blood sucking tick who's about to explode from over indulgence. Put a wick in this guy's belly button and light it, you'd have the eternal light that would burn for a thousand years. Sheesh
He does have one , but for some reason, I think beyond his control, it doesn't show up all the time. I had the same thing happen to me, temporarily.

Wasn't it the Polish Rifle avi …Ron Jawor-ski?
People like Shales never get their feet held to the fire for whatever drivil they spout….Until now…
But seriously, does ANYONE give a rip what this loser sez?.
I thought he assumed room temperature long ago…
Nice avi!
Sue them,Andrew.I don't have the money or I would. They were just projecting….for sure they are racist
Ditto, thanks!
This fat b'tard couldn't walk three feet to a story…where does he get his information? this tub of crud has no street creds!
Bloated bag of bullsh*t.
i don't want to be in the same area code if he starts regurgitating anything…
Frank, I have a slight disagreement with your assessment of Tom Shales mental state. You say he wants to believe, I say he wants us to believe. It is not his fantasy world that will come crashing down, it is carefully crafted world that will suffer. You see, he lies and he doesn’t care if we know it, he only cares if enough people believe it. They are not just trying to control the news or make the news, they want to make the world in which we all live—to suit themselves. It doesn’t matter how they go about it. They can justify any evil to achieve their goals.
I have been trying for over a year to get an icon for my name, and despite 25 years in the computer industry, I can't get it to work.
I've even sent emails to the help desk. They said just sign up for an avatar account. Tried that for a dozen times or so. I can't believe there is already an avatar account for "edski_66432899" but avatar keeps telling me its already taken.
I will endeavor to persevere.
Lech Walesa is is a great man. It takes onions the size of the Brooklyn bridge to stare down the old Soviet Union. And he did it.
If you know of any tricks to get avatar working, I'm all ears.
We have arrived at a point where the liberal politicians control the Media. This story dovetails well with the Black Panther cover-up. I live in Indy area and no-one calls out Andre Carson on this. Part of this Administrations strategy is what I call "senses overload", there are so many leaks in the dike and our society suffers from "short attention span", that exposing anything is nearly impossible.
They call names because the tired arguments they spout have no factual evidence to support their claims. Remember back to when we were children, around 8 or so. You'd get into an argument with someone and when one side ran out of facts to back their theory you'd hear, "Yea, well you're a dudu head!" Doesn't that should like a kids version of what the left does?
Read rules for radicals. Personalize and ridicule.
I think Chicago Ralph may know….But it appears to be working !
Nice hat!!
Yes it does. Since you brought it up I thought I'd give it one of my bi-monthly attempts, and it let me right in.
I found that hat sitting on a window sill at work, and it just sat there for a week in an open hall way, so on my way out for a week vacation camping, I picked it up and wore it. Where I used to go camping with my old college buddies, we're about 2 miles from the parking lot, so it gets a little rough. And that straw hat did make it the entire week. That pic is me in the lean-to.
By the way I love your pic and description!
All is well in the "ether", now that your avi is working again…!
That red x was not makin' it…
Where do you camp? Are you in Montana?
Catskill State Park in upstate NY. By a little town called Cooks Falls. Also happens to be one of the greatest trout streams in the world.
We get off the highway, go about 5 miles, get on a dirt road, go for another 2 miles and park. Then gear up and a 2 mile hike (up hill) to the far side of the lake. And we could basically do what ever we wanted.
Copious amounts of adult beverages, obnoxious comments, and usually plenty of fireworks, we used to do it on July 4. I remember one particular year we got a standing ovation from other campers around the lake for the fireworks display.
Good times, great friends, but I'm reaching the age where I can do the work, but not the drinking. Those guys are professionals.
I know the area…
As children, we used to frequent Lake George in the summers…Lots of good memories…We were in Jersey and PA until I was 15 …then pop was transferred to CA..
Where we are stuck, until we get to the other side of this depressing recession…
Pray for sanity to be restored here.
In spite of the idiocy of the urban voters, there are many disgruntled moderate to real Conservatives here who will see that changes are made or we will leave en mass.
Oh yeah, Lake George is beautiful. That's about an hour farther north of Cooks Falls, but its the same country.
The fastest way to get through this recession would be for the government to stop trying to fix it. They are only prolonging it.
Economics is the study of the allocation of scarce resources for which there are other uses. When those scarce resources are allocated most efficiently,we have economic growth. When they aren't, we have a recession. If they are prevented from being reallocated we eventually get a depression.
The government is convinced they are in the best position to determine how resources should be allocated – TARP, bailouts, etc.
That is central planning and it does not work, ever. Period. There is no way a few thousand people in far off DC can know better what economic decisions 310 million individuals make every day. They aren't smart enough, no one is.
And until they get that through their big, fat, thick skulls, and leave We The People alone to make our own decisions, we're going to be stuck in a recession.
Tom Shales is a rectal rash and you need to go to a Doctor to get a cream to rub on it to make it go away. But looking at the size of this rash tells me they don't make bottles that big.
Hey look everybody, it's Jabba the Butt.
"someone who was there needs to start a defamation law suit against the three of them for mega bucks!!!!"
It occurred to me for the first time as I was reading this post that it was very clever of the Black Caucus to accuse a crowd and no one in particular of using the profanity they claim they heard. I'm not a lawyer but I would suspect that this insulates them from a lawsuit as no individual can claim that Rep. John Lewis was speaking specifically about them.
If Lewis had said, "Darski called me a n—er" I would suspect you could take legal action. But these guys are cowards and they hide behind their vague and general accusations. It's the same tactic they use in their criticism of the Tea Party.
Sorry to go off message here, but does that photo of Tom Shales look like Alan Colmes on all-you-can-eat "In-N-Out", 4×4's? There's is a striking resemblance…
The M/V A-Whale! Ha ha ha ha!
the black people are waiting till next time when they will make sure the N word is used ………. I know it ………. they have no interest in joining together they want their Black police groups black lawyers, black black black until it is a nation where color does not matter then there will be racism …………. and that day will be the second coming …………..
You as well…
I think he's that last true American (actor)
oh, wait. There's Jon Voight as well but I don't think he has a more powerful visual impact than Dirty Harry or The Man With No Name! Oh and your enemies are my enemies as welll!
He's like an even fatter Roger Ebert.
I like and respect Jon Voight but has not had visual or moral impact of Hombre sin Nombre/Harry/ or Wales…
and who would those enemies be beside all progs and leftists?
Glad you changed your avi back…
I was messin around with the settings and messed up, didn't mean for it to switch to my ugly mug
Dullard. Anyone wondering why the Old Media is dying?
THEY FIRED THE SHOT HEARD AROUND THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!! They manned the megaphone proclaiming it…Thew "N" word was the proclamation, It is still applicable "N"egative, but they leave that "N" word silent, it is contrary to their lie!!!
Shales is a disgrace to journalism, beside being a walking fruit salad.
