The “Pedophile Priest” Case, 1995-2002: Coakley cut secret deal in 1995 that allowed Father Geoghan to molest again.
Martha Coakley is running for the U.S. Senate in part on her track record of keeping children safe from predators. The actual facts, however, are somewhat at odds with her campaign biography.
One of the most notorious cases of homosexual child abuse in the “pedophile priests” scandal that rocked the American Catholic Church in general and the Archdiocese of Boston in particular over the past twenty years involved Father John Geoghan, who came to symbolize the cancer in the church.

Here’s a brief introduction to the late, defrocked Father Geoghan by Denise Noe in Crime Magazine. Be sure to read the whole story, then come back.
The unofficial poster boy for priest pedophilia was a Boston priest named Father John Geoghan. He became a symbol for everything the church had done wrong in handling this problem when, on Jan. 6, 2002, The Boston Globe broke the story about how Boston’s archbishop, Cardinal Bernard Law, had moved the abusive Geoghan from parish to parish over the years. The article also discussed the $10 million dollar settlement the church had already made with families of his victims. After the article ran, an embarrassed Law apologized – and turned over to law enforcement the names of dozens of Boston priests who had been similarly accused.
The Geoghan scandal rocked Boston, and eventually resulted in Cardinal Law’s removal as Archbishop. In part to shield him from possible prosecution, the late Pope John Paul II summoned Law to Rome, where he was ensconced as the Archpriest of the historic Basilica of St. Mary Major, and replaced him in Boston with Archbishop Sean O’Malley.
And what was Ms. Coakley’s role in all this? At first, she was applauded for her role in the successful prosecution of Father Geoghan in 2002. But then it was discovered that she had plea-bargained away molestation charges against him in 1995, letting him off with probation in a deal that was kept secret from the public.
What?
One possible explanation for her actions is that she had lost a high-profile case against a priest in suburban Woburn, Father Paul Manning; Manning’s parishioners reportedly cheered when he was acquitted of molesting an 11-year-old altar boy at his 1994 trial.
Still, as David Clohessy, national director of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, noted at the time: “Charging Geoghan with something and exposing him publicly might well have brought forward victims, witnesses, whistle-blowers, and evidence that could have resulted in a conviction and a tougher sentence.’’
Here’s Martha, explaining herself:
And here’s the Boston Globe story, recounting the whole sordid mess:
When Martha Coakley was the Middlesex district attorney, her office prosecuted the Rev. John J. Geoghan based on an allegation that he squeezed the buttocks of a 10-year-old boy a single time at a public swimming pool. The highly publicized 2002 conviction won Coakley widespread praise for bringing the first successful criminal case against the widely accused pedophile, a priest many had called “Father Jack.’’
But seven years earlier, Coakley, then the head of the Middlesex child abuse unit, had Geoghan in her sights and took a dramatically different approach. Back then, three grade-school brothers told investigators that Geoghan had inappropriately touched them during numerous visits to their Waltham home, and had made lewd telephone calls to them. Rather than prosecute, Coakley agreed to grant Geoghan a year of probation in a closed-door proceeding that received no media attention at all.
Because of the deal, Geoghan faced no formal charges and no criminal record.
In sanctioning the 1995 probation agreement, Coakley, now the front-runner in a special election for the United States Senate, never pressed the Boston Archdiocese for any prior complaints against Geoghan.
That’s one way to make a name for yourself: let a pedophile off the hook privately so that he can molest more children, and then make a big, public conviction to take credit for your amazing work keeping children safe from…. the pedophile priest you secretly let go seven years earlier.
And as for Father Geoghan, he was strangled and killed by a fellow inmate in February, 2004.
More to come…

Geoghan didn't last very long in stir, did he?…
No one advocates that kind of end, but goodness- after stealing the innocence of all those children- his end seemed just.
Martha Coakley doesn't necessarily strike us as a bad person, but as a blithering idiot. Perhaps the good people of The Commonwealth will see the same thing…
Is this the first reporting of her actions that will come to the attention of the people of Massachusetts? Based on this story, I would think the people of Massachusetts would want to put her and this sorry chapter behind them. Brown, on the other hand, appears to be a person of outstanding character and reputation.
She covered a lot of ground making excuses for herself re: the church record. 'They weren't available – no, actually they weren't relevant – oh SNAP! We had no idea they existed.'
sure.
Pace yourself Gary, pace yourself.
My two cents.
Jeffery Dahmer meet Father Geoghan.
Father Geoghan meet Jeffery Dahmer.
The right are doing a "hit job" on this struggling Dem politician who went easy on a Catholic Priest child molester?
BAD MOVE Coakley! You are thrown to the sharks on this one.
So, she worked to keep the innocent in jail and the guilty out of jail?
http://www.breitbart.tv/man-in-notorious-sex-abus...
Martha did it for the children.
Geoghan was a true pedophile, not a "pedophile." I understand, and agree, that the word has been misused in the vast majority of these cases, but not in this one.
@2:30: "I believe we did a very good job at recognizing we were limited at what we could do…"
Interpretation: "Sure, we F-d up but were good at it."
Evil
Huh? I'm a little confused.
Maybe she wanted to "help" more children discover their "inner nature", as does at least one recent appointment to high position. Regardless, that's what she did, ruining countless lives in the process.
Wouldn't be surprising if there are enough people in her state who approve of her actions enough to vote for her.
Mike is saying there is no reason to use quotes ("_") around pedophile. He was a pedophile.
Maybe she was in cahoots with the Safe Schools Czar and was helping him fulfil his dream of destroying the innocence of every young boy and young girl in the country.
Yer catchin' on!
There's no way to twist this into a posititve action by a Demon-cRat political hack coggy?
Wow, you might be "evolving".
yup. how "noble of her" – per – Teddy Kennedy – Oldsmobile Submarine Commander and fugative from REAL JUSTICE.
Surprising? From the political party that WORKS AS HARD as it can to kill innocent babies…
and WORKS AS HARD AS IT CAN TO SPARE HENIOUS KILLERS FROM EXECUTION?
I'd say she's a "par for the course" run of the mill Demon-cRat.
As a Catholic, bringing up this piece of shit Goeghan again pains me. But the fact he was allowed to continue his crimes pisses me off even more.
And now some one who could have put an end to it even sooner thinks they deserve a seat in the most exclusive club in America.
I'm left speechless.
I say "Pour it on Gary, pour it on" – but thats just me…
It appears to me, she comes off as one with her eye on the prize rather than the job.
He's only got till next Tuesday, after that, he can reedit and rerun them to keep the word out.
He doesn't deserve to be called Father. I know far too many others that do and deserve it.
I can see the physical pain on my Pastor's face when the subject comes up. He spent a dozen years or so working on the Diocese court going through these cases. And its not a look of 'oh no, not that again,' its a look of 'My God, how did we let these events ever happen?'
Other than that, I agree with your sentiment exactly.
Charming, simply charming!
I know James, CD not rushing to the defense of the “good” father…yak!
Good to see you back in action, and I'm glad you didn't take a fast draw on the Church.
Because that's how the left is most likely going to respond to this, if they do at all.
Do they have sharks in Massachusetts Bay? I bet their mean bastards if they do. The sharks that is.
Trust me it gets worse. Even Reason magazine has been tracking her.
Wait for further installments.
I think what he's doing a take on Whoopi Goldberg's flub that Polanski didn't commit "rape-rape."
He's saying Geoghan was the real deal. I personally know people who've been accused by kids. Police said plead guilty and we'll keep it quiet. He refused, the police got it into the news any way they could. Kid admitted lying in court. No retraction ever printed.
Geoghan was the real deal.
I know, I'm shocked – real Demon-cRat(SS) defend fellow Demon-cRat(SS) (see Harry "Plantation Owner" Reid) no matter what. It's about the dogma, the movement the advancement of socialism for ALL! Yea!
When a state attorney general is so clueless about something as serious as pedophilia she's not fit to run a Girl Scout troop, much less hold a US Senate seat.
I know it's Taxachussetts and I know they have a fetish for brainless numbskulls with a D behind their names. But I think Coakley might be too stupid for even Bay State voters to tolerate.
On the other hand, Barney Frank is stil in Congresss, so…
I hear you James, my thought is more along the lines of one of these stories a day. Not have them all go out at one time. Breitbart seemed to have success with stringing the ACORN videos out. That worked very well.
I hope Big Journalism/Government have stories related to the Massachusetts Senate race right up until the election.
Go Scott Brown!
It's time to elect Scott Brown to the US Senate. This woman has no idea. And she would just end up being a puppet to the current administration.
This is the first time that a conservative vote can count in MA and it's time to get out and vote for Scott Brown!
anyone else see Cardinal Law as chief celebrant of the Funeral "Mass" of the late Pope JPII? He's protected from extradition by being shielded in the Papal States (EU country). What a testimony to the concern about pedophilia among the RC clergy! The present pope as Cardinal Ratzinger (see youtube "Sex Crimes and the Vatican" BBC docu) wrote the heinous "Crimens Solicitationes" demanding that priests put those accusing them or other clergy under the "seal of Confession" (actually meant for the priest to honor) so that they will report nothing to the authorities. Incredible Hypocrisy from the Frankish Church of Europe.
"Coakley agreed to grant Geoghan a year of probation in a closed-door proceeding that received no media attention at all."
Looks like she'll fit in well with the rest of the Dems in the Senate. God I hope Brown wins!!
Martha did it to the children
That to.
I smell a payoff from the Archdiocese to Coakley to keep this under the national radar. She is as corrupt as her boss the "dear leader" and she knows how to do it well with all her blah blah blah confusing rhetoric.
[...] While Nuns and Fenway Park are on Martha Coakley’s bad list, it turns out she has a good list. Know who’s on it? Pedophiles. [...]
dcase,
It seems prison officials"inadvertently" put Geoghan in the same cell with one of his victims, who just happened to be serving a life sentence for murder. How could they have known?
Actually, it's Crimen sollicitationis, and it is not as you describe. It is actually designed to bring witnesses forward against priests who may have solicited them in the confessional. The secrecy requirement is to encourage witnesses to speak freely in an investigation and trial. See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimen_sollicitation... the idea were to simply cover for perverts, there would be no requirement that one solicited come forward with accusations in no less than one month.____ FWIW many states take a similar approach to say, investigations of abuse of the mentally handicapped in state licensed boarding homes, etc. Such a policy has its downside, like limiting theadmissibility at trial of statements made during investigations – the evidence basically has to be reconstructed all over again for trial. But the idea is that the investigation will yield more useful information than it would without the confidentiality. ____P.S. Mass doesn't need quotes around it.

Ben:
Eh — Massah-Choose-its re-elected Teddy the Swimmer of "Waitress sandwich" fame term after term.
Why in the world would Coakly bother 51% of them in the least ?
She hasn't drowned a boyfriend or shagged a lobbyist in the upstairs dining room over lunch, or talked incoherent jibberish on the campaign trail or gone blank ah, ah, ah, when
She could Lie from here to the end of the Obamah administration and be caught in every lie and the faithful 51 % of Ted K voters would turn out over and over (plus those in the graveyard still voting and the 5%-10% vote fraud built into the Banana Republic voting system)
Nope. At least 20% in the middle will have to be really pissed off and vote against her to overcome the vote fraud and faithful dumbells who vote "D" in Boston.

Amazing that she can still walk, after riding BOTH sides of the fence for so long!!
She is simply carrying on the Kennedy legacy, of lying and then lying again, to make yourself 'seem' important…she is nothing more than a completely clueless idiot, that somehow got elected to office…I am amazed that she has lasted this long…unless of course the good people of Mass. choose to look the other way when she says something stupid…
"No one advocates that kind of end"
You mean no one except me. I have no problem whatsoever seeing pedophiles strangled in their dank prison cells. It is absolutely inexcusable behavior, and IMO, warrants death.
You have to feel sorry for David C. and the rest of SNAP. It is common knowledge that most abuse victims become abusers themselves and they act out in different ways. But of course all this was not common knowledge until a few years ago.
Coakley must be seen as a real threat to the incumbent since they have decided to go after her like this.
The BBC documentary "Sex and the Vatican" translates directly from the Latin (I used the Latin title as I remembered from the Documentary) Do watch this to hear the testimony of the priest who was involved in the translations: he actually left the priesthood because of it. He saw that the Vatican provided protections for priests by placing the Seal of the Confessional over those youngsters who were accusing them. The fact that the Vatican required parishes to send allegations directly to THEM and not to law enforcement in their areas gives another clue about their clergy cover-up. "Confidentiality" worked only one way: the Vatican knows and does not investigate, while law enforcement has no case. Wiikipedia information is not necessarily accurate at all as we know. By the way, my use of quotes around "Mass" indicates that it's a contraction of "Dismissal" drawn from the Ancient Orthodox Church's "Troparion" ("dismissal") hymns after Matins and before Divine Liturgy. The RC service seems patterned more after the proskemidi service of Preparation of the Bread than related to the original Divine Liturgy from the Apostles Peter and James compiled in 350 ad which Orthodox continue to pray throughout the world.
Reporting the truth is hardly going after somebody. And the only threat she poses is to children. But a NAMBLA member such as yourself can't see the problem with sex with little kids, can you?
Reading from the Wikipedia blurb: it is clear that the onus is on the person who is Solicited, to report the solicitation to the authorities. If not, the VICTIM will be excommunicated. What kind of charity is this? The bishops punish those who do not report – most of them children – within a month or they are excommunicated. Wonderful.
And the bishops' tribunal will make the final decision… impartial we're very sure /s/.
Here's more from one who knew the "history" of the document: http://ncronline.org/node/4530
[...] Martha’s Greatest Hits II: Candidate Coakley and the ‘Pedophile Priest’ (BigJournalism.com) [...]
Martha Coakley isn't "bad", she is EVIL. She prosecutes people that she knows are innocent, and then works to keep them in prison even after MORE proof is provided that they are innocent. BUT, if you are part of her campaign, you and your familiy can commit whatever crime you want and get a pass.
The incumbent is dead.
Irene, I will assume that you are not Catholic, that is for the sake of argument. Could you please explain to me what you mean when you say the "Frankish Church of Europe". Also, please note that what ever a priest hears in confession he can not tell anyone…not even the police or even the Pope. It has always been that way.
Speaking of all things wrong with the Catholic Church, THEY should be cleaning up Haiti. Orphanages there are full of children who are NOT orphans. Those poor people just crank them out, take them to the orphanges to raise, and then they go home and have more. It's no pack with the Devil, it's the Catholic influence.
She's obviously Greek Orthodox and still carrying a chip on her shoulder over 1054 and all that . . .
(cont.) Again, the document in question pertains to solicitations in confession, and it does not require victims to keep quiet to secular authorities. As a practical matter, it prevents the record of a canon law adjudication from being used by secular authorities to develop evidence for their own tribunals. That may or may not be a good thing, but every policy has its trade offs. For instance, you gripe about the seal of the confessional (although in the context in which you use it, it is not clear you even know what it is), but how about this similar concept which everyone takes for granted and no one demands be abolished: the attorney-client privilege. That works just like the seal of the confessional and is in place to foster frank (and maybe even Frankish!) discussion between accused and counsel. Like the seal of the confessional or Crimen sollicitationis, it places the skids on third parties' ability to discover pertininent information. But its a trade-off that must be accepted if the system is to work at all.
Pax vobiscum
Yes, because after all, it's all those kids who caused the earth quake.
The true point here is that these disposable children make great little slaves and fodder for pervert priests. Gee, they make their own supply, guy.

Your link is broken. Doh!
Invariably these sorts of criticisms come from Catholics who want to convince themselves that their own use of artificial contraception is really okay.
Thank you for asking. In my undergrad years, I was a RC Novice-nun and saw abuse first-hand with a Jesuit molesting one of my classmates under the guise of "counseling".
My reference to the "Frankish Church" refers to Charlemagne's founding of his European Church (which he called "roman catholic" to convince the peasants who had been Orthodox since Apostolic times). He changed the Nicene Creed in Council of Aachen (800 ad) adding to the Lord's own words about the Holy Spirit's procession from the Father, and called the worldwide Orthodox Churches to the East, "pagan greek". In reality, the Orthodox Catholic (worldwide) church is the Church founded at Pentecost. The Crusades were undertaken by the Franks after their takeover of the papacy, to establish credibility for their claims to be the "original" church. Charlemagne created a religious-secular institution with his "soldier-bishops" (see letters of St. Boniface reporting on his soldiers' murdering Christian bishops) that continues today claiming an "infallible" man as its leader. The Orthodox Church has Christ as her Head, the God-Man Who alone saves us. The Franks moved southerly with their swords, finally conquering the papal states in 10th century. One can see literally the change from Scriptural and right-believing popes to (for instance) Sylvester II (Franks' appointee) who loved pagan mythology and decorated the Vatican's walls with frescoes of cupids, fauns and nudity. For more on this history of the Church East and West, see http://www.romanity.org under "Contents" and Articles on the Frankish Church from a Harvard classical scholar Dr. Romanides.
I posted a response that appears to have disappeared into the ether. If you would take a break from your rabid anti-Catholicism for a minute, you'd realize that if the solicited person doesn't report the solicitiation, it would give rise to a strong inference of complicity in abusing the confessional as a place to engage in trysts with gay priests. Any normal person would report without being told anyway. In point of fact, most of the victims are not small children but are pubescent and post-pubescent boys who are either "curious" or outright homosexual themselves. That fact in no way justifies the depredations of older men, just as nothing justifies the depredations of school teachers toward their students. The offenders are not usually pedophiles in the true sense but simply homosexuals with an attraction to sexually mature but otherwise immature males. (cont. below)
Why does the press insist on calling this a pedophile problem? It has always been a "homsexual" problem. Wake up folks. Call a spade a spade.
ok, so she's evil…
we did indicate a certian type of fate was met…
folk are telling us she IS a bad person. Seeing the video of her doesn't make them look like liars…
Sorry. I wrote something longer and decided to edit it down. Took out too much.
The author said that Geoghan's was, "one of the most notorious cases of homosexual child abuse in the “pedophile priests” scandal." I was pointing out that it was wrong to imply that Geoghan was anything like the rest of these cases, because Geoghan was actually a pedophile.
(I'm not defending the actions of the other priests at all, just calling things by their true names. Those priests were sick, evil, and criminal, but they weren't pedophiles.)

I am another who is Catholic and I understand the sentiment. This was one of the real cases,….. and she let him off……
Whilst I will not excuse Cardinal Law for any cover up…… what I want to know is whether he in fact committed the crime of pedophilia. If not, then there is no logical ground to persist in these demands to see him return to the USA.
you have to keep in mind that what is stated in the Confessional has to remain there, and that other procedures needed to be put in place.
Where someone speaks outside of the confessional, then that is not protected. It is a different story.
I do think that some people who do get bent out of shape on this particular issue need to learn more about other who commit the crimes of incest, and they need to find out more about the teachers who have been guilty of similar crimes.
In other words stop slinging the mud at one side, and start finding out more about who else has done the same thing but you are letting them off the hook because of pride and prejudice.
Cardinal Law did not commit the crime – you must not know anything about this, but you're commenting – ??? but covered up for priests who did. He is accessory to the crime. This is not a confessional problem if you read this priest's MO – he would go "camping" or have the boys come over to his place or even the family's home. As a former RC nun who studied under the Jesuits, I know the cases that were "winked at" or covered up. AT THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM (perhaps too difficult for you to understand) is that the European Papacy of the Franks (Charlemagne founded it in 800 ad with a new "creed", etc) follows Augustine's teaching which elevated celibacy above marriage, and insisted that ALL priests remain celibate. Most people are called to be Married as the Lord tells us "To whom (celibacy) is given, let him take it". Those few will serve as priests within an Orthodox monastery family. We also note that the Jesuits have changed their vow of Chastity to one of being "Unmarried"… Hmmm very "jesuitical" of them. That is, strictly speaking, they are not forbidden to form "relationships" , just not sanctify them in marriage. Hypocrites and children of Charlemagne. Charlemagne's daughters were concubines but not married, since he believed Augustine's teaching that marriage was a "venial sin" propagating Original Sin through marital relations. But outside of marriage, somehow this was acceptable, proving once again that philosophers are not Christian believers.
