With a whiff of nostalgia, I can imagine the old time journalist with the smell of coffee and cigarettes wafting through the click and clang of the typewriter. Fifty years ago, a “journalist” had the ring of a dispassionate, creative, honest, fair, and trusted detective/storyteller. Fifty years ago, if you graduated from an accredited journalism school, you were presumed “unbiased.” Much as the physician takes an oath that she will “first, do no harm,” the “journalist” title meant that you were first, unbiased and balanced. Neutrality in the story was as necessary as it was assumed.

Sometime between half a century ago and today, something went very, very wrong.
We can speculate on what the “something” was, but we may never know for sure. Much like the wind blows, there is no discernible source, but still we know it blows. Journalism became slanted to the left to the degree that the right had almost no voice by the mid-1980s. Almost no voice, until Rush Limbaugh came on the scene. Almost 30 years later, the tables have turned. The problem for these journalists is that they have functioned robotically and cavalierly for so long, that they are not aware of the reality around them. Things have changed. Drastically.
At CPAC 2010, I watched as the Mainstream Media (MSM) lashed out at Andrew Breitbart again and again. He could hardly walk through the hall of the hotel without being accosted by trolling media elites who were anxious to bully him. I watched as they tried all the old Alinsky tactics over and over, but Breitbart beat them at their own game. When they got in his face, he smacked them down hard and fast. It occurred to me; they weren’t aware that everything has changed.
I am the conservative political analyst for a local radio station that has been around forever. I love media, and I love my job there. I work for a true legend in St. Louis media, who has managed to be very balanced in his approach to his craft. There is one older, very liberal MSM journalist who’s show is just after mine. My show is only a 15-minute spot, his is hours long. Since he is on after me, he has taken to using clips (some in context, some out) of my show and lashing out with pejoratives against me and other conservatives. Evidently, he had no idea that everything has changed.
These four points form the “Perfect Storm” that (I will argue) have forever changed journalism:
1) Andrew Breitbart, established Big Government, Big Hollywood, Big Journalism, and Breitbart TV, and conservative journalists and media personalities are crawling out of the woodwork! They report and they gain supporters in droves, and are growing.
2) The Tea Party has arrived. The Tea Party is cellular and organic, and yet the individual members are remarkably cohesive. The Tea Party is all about action, and members stand ready and willing to come up against anyone they perceive to be dishonestly reporting the news.
3) There is such a huge rise in the number of citizen journalists that I can’t even count the CJ’s that are in my local Tea Party. They are becoming more and more tech-savvy and emboldened. The new media is armed and ready with cameras, mics, pen and paper, and beautiful “bloghood.”
4) Alinsky’s tactics were successfully employed for decades by unions, reporters, and liberals. With the birth of the Tea Party, Alinsky’s tactics were turned upon the secular progressives with a Ninja move by the right. Now boycotts turn to BUYcotts, bitchers turn to bloggers, and conservatives are behind the camera lenses.
So, listen up, MSM! The old, liberal reporter at my station found out the hard way. Friends of mine who thrive on this stuff confronted him at a recent socialized health care rally. He became red faced and angry, and pushed the cameraman with a black gloved hand. All of it, of course, was caught on tape, because that’s what we do.
The day I returned from watching Breitbart repeatedly smack down the MSM at CPAC10, I opened my email to discover that that old reporter is now subject to legal action for the incident. I tried to warn him that would happen if he didn’t straighten himself out. I believe he just did not understand that everything has changed. If he did believe it, I am not sure he could digest it fully. There is no way that a 40-year veteran did not know better than to push a cameraman. I believe the reality of the new era of politics smacked him upside the face, and he reacted.
They sit around, black coffee in one hand, cigarette in the other, wondering what has happened to radio and the “legendary” talent that is, well…unemployed. If they asked me, I would tell them that they should never have become so arrogant that they imposed their will on our craft. They revoked their right to be “legendary journalists” when they chose self over impartiality and balance. They successfully changed the rules of partiality in journalism; they did not successfully ensure their place in it. They will continue to die off, and many of them will no longer be working as journalists, if they are working at all.
They will be replaced with people like Andrew Breitbart, Hannah Giles, Glenn Reynolds and others. I would tell them to go find other work before they get into trouble, like the older journalist at my station did. And then, I would offer them some cream for their black coffee, and a breath mint, because the smoke and coffee smell on their breath really sickens me.

What happened "between a half-century ago and today" is that the philosophy of the Socialist Left inculcated itself in our academic institutions – and journalists became believers that they were agents of "positive social change".
The vast left wing conspiracy is not used to dealing with their own tactics used against them…
The MSM is drowning in the misery it has created. Let's merely hope nobody tosses them a line.
Breitbart was awesome at CPAC in calling out the MSM. Dr. Loudon makes a great point about how much in trouble the MSM is and they do not even know it. I think this guy in St. Louis is just the beginning for these leftist "journalists" who are really politcal activists first.
My nephew is a journalist major at the University of Houston. He said he is being taught that true journalism is about having an ax to grind. What the deuce? I thought journalism was about researching and reporting a story while being unbiased.
Charles Jaco is the "Old Journalist" at your station?
Man that sucks. He looks like Jack Nichelson playing some sort of B-Level Batman villan.
People realy listen to that jackass for hours a day?
But now to what I realy want to complain about in your story, and that is the negative way in which you protray balck coffe and cigarettes. You act like you have to be some 60yr old lib with no connection to the real world in order to enjoy the amazing combination that is black coffe and cigarettes. Nothing could be further from the truth. Im 26, conserative, just out of college, and while I dont smoke often (less than a pack a month) when I do I love black coffee.
So please, do not lump me in with jackasses like Jac.
Other than that, its a fine read.
Just dont expect the MSM to be self aware enough to see that the world has changed any time soon.
They've gone deaf having lived in an echo chamber for so long.
The Marx Stream Media are the biggest collection or trolls and harpies ever!
Write stories in an "accurate" and "unbiased" way or go spinning down the toilet with the rest of the mentally ill left!
If the media gets in my personal space, they will get smacked down. 3 foot rule… get inside that and you'll be buying a new camera I don't care who you are. "Journalism" doesn't get a free pass, regardless of party. There are no constitutional rights to shove a camera in someone's face in effort to provoke them.
Good read Doc! When the ‘60s turned into the ‘70s and I was getting ready for college. I can remember that one of the choices was journalism, why? “to change the world!” Even as a kid this struck me as cynical, and I was a true believer in the Counter Culture. Shoot forward to 1980 and I was watching Walter Cronkite editorializing about the presidential race, and he made the comment, to paraphrase, “I believe that Jimmy Carter is the smarter man,” he was referring to the great Ronald Reagan. This for me was the end of the press, and everything before or since was to be viewed with a jaundiced eye…to think that even Uncle Walter is a liar propagandist with a leftist agenda. Thanks Andrew, and all of the New Media, real change is at hand.
True to an extent.
However the idea of an 'unbiased' journalist spans only a short time in history, and even then is often more myth than fact. The "Newspapers" read, and printed by our founding fathers contained outragious stories and sometimes out right lies about member of the other party. Just look at some of the things Jefferson said about Adams.
That theme continued up into the Civil War with North and South papers reflecting only their side of the issue and even into the 20's with the now notorious "Yellow Journalists" that played a roll in sparking the Spanish American War.
I guess when we look back at the 1950's we just want to idealise everything. We want it to be Happy Days. But the truth is that idiology has always played a roll in journalism. Today we just have way more media.
The MSM swapped 'reporting the news' for 'influencing public opinion' decades ago. Were there reasonable diversity in newsrooms, that still wouldn't be so bad. But the way they understand diversity is that it only applies to skin color. So on TV screens we get white, black brown, occasionally purple, and every intermediate shade of moderate-to-far-left journalists. Those who have risen to managerial and editorial positions all went through school during the overwhelmingly revolutionary-leftist 60s, and they simply take that mindset as Gospel truth that needn't ever be examined or challenged. Blame America first.
Oh, some of the elitists on NPR even get to bring their quaint hyphenated-English accents on-air with them, as a badge of ethnic authenticity. Unless they're white, in which case they must rid themselves of any regional accents, particularly Southern. Diversity at NPR does not tolerate 'Deliverance'.
You've got the timing just right; I took a journalism course in high school about 50 years ago, and as I'm fond of saying, "I'm so old I can remember when being a newspaper journalist was an honorable profession."
I lived in NYC after college, and around 1970 I started to notice a change in tone in the Times: a lot of "news" articles started with sob-sister examples of this or that citizen suffering some sort of injustice. It was too prevalent not to be policy. It made the paper unreadable, as far as I was concerned.
What happened was Journalism became a 'profession' – with degrees (metered out by ultra-liberal establishments such as Columbia University…), Associations ( which would make skull-and-bones look like the cub scouts I suspect ).
That and the fact that most of it is controlled by a few media elite (almost all liberal). That is why they hate fox (and Andrew) with such passion – they refuse to toe-the-line.
And the same ole bullsh*t 'accomodation' – like CNN gave to Saddam during GW1.
" Fifty years ago, if you graduated from an accredited journalism school, you were presumed “unbiased.” Much as the physician takes an oath that she will “first, do no harm,” the “journalist” title meant that you were first, unbiased and balanced. Neutrality in the story was as necessary as it was assumed."
Oh, I disagree. Was Murrow unbiased? Cronkite? Mike Wallace? Duranty? No, it's just that for years they covered it up more successfully, hiding their agendas behind a carefully-constructed pose of impartiality; and of course there were no alternative media to call them on it. Thus Unca Walter could be "The Most Trusted Man in America," despite being a radical leftist.
Frankly, I think J-schools have to bear part of the blame, in their constantly holding up as ideals "speaking truth to power," "comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable" and, as posted above, "having an axe to grind:" all the old muckraker slogans. In the old days there were no J-schools: reporters learned their trade on the job, starting as copyboys and moving up to the police-blotter beat or similar scut-work. In so doing they learned not just reportage, but how the real world works- something utterly unknown to an Anderson Cooper or Mika Brzezinski.
BUSTED!
PUNDIT PAWN you seem to be unaware (intentionally???) that JACO was at this gathering to shove CAMERAS in the faces of Tea Partiers while referring to them as TEA BAGGERS…so if it is good for the goose then it sure must be good for that old Gander…right??? I'm a former Marine and I am Texan to the Bone so I understand personal space but this jackass deserved to get what he had been dishing out with impunity for his long and uneventful career!
In the old days, it was easy for the media to control the narrative and they did so so well that conservatives felt isolated. I believe that a lot of us got into the habit of hiding our feelings because we felt like we were really odd ducks. However, the rise of talk radio and social networking via the 'net has allowed us to connect and realize that we aren't alone. The old media never accounted for that and that is where they fail.
And PUNDIT PAWN if he shoved me he would be at the orthodontist office right now getting his jaw rewired…just sayin!!!
However, I would suggest that a massive orchestrated take-over of academia – and by indoctrination the journalism students -by subversive Socialists in the past 50 years is unprecedented in American history…
…and much more damaging to our Republic than the scurrilous broadsheets of the 1790's or the raucous jingoism of the Hearst newspapers of the late 19th and early 20th century.
The so called MSM spent all its credibility on two things. First, the kid gloves treatment of Bill Clinton's "affair" with a 20 year old intern in the Oval Office. If Clinton had been a republican he would have been run out of town on a rail, instead we were told daily that it was "all about sex" and we were perverts for caring about it. Any republican would have been impeached. Rightfully. There was also strange silence from the women's groups. Hello, NOW?
For me, the bell tolled long ago. I went from democrat to independent and found home as the conservative I always had been but needed rebirth. As the song says, I Can See Clearly Now.
" Almost no voice, until Rush Limbaugh came on the scene"
I would have to say the arrival of RUSH on the media scene in 1988, was the beginning of the end for the MSM. He has always been and will always be the booming voice of entertaining Conservative reason.
Knocking the Old Media liars and fabricators back on their heels with a blend of sharp sarcasm, humour, and above all TRUTH As time goes on, he only get more entertaining and powerful.
We all have him to thank for focusing our Conservative views at a time when issues appeared murky after Ronald Reagan and excuses were being made for the fall of the Soviet Union….
We knew inherently, what we were hearing we from the Old Media about everything was somewhere between sloppy fact collecting and outright distortions of the facts.
Now, with our own version of the old print media (BIGS and others), along with Rush and the others blabbers, we have a constant supply of truth ammo, to repel the lies, distortions, and storyboard fantasies thrown at US by the old MSM.
Yup- the academia part is where we totally agree.
However I dont know if today's media is more damaging than the 1700's. At least now we have a 200yr+ history of freedom and elections. The propaganda being put out back then went to the founder of the country and the very few voters who actualy built the nation into what it became. They where at much higher risk of doing perminate damage to the Constitution, because this was going on while it was being written!
But we are arguing pittley pionts. The Founders started a great nation, and we have a chance to put that nation back on track with our votes in November.
November- Vote them all Out!
Someone's got to say it… the real focus of evil in America… the place where not only the news-censoring, fact-burying MSM has found a warm home and fortress, but also the ACLU and ACORN and NOW and the NEA (both of them), and union thugs and Alynskyites and Fannie & Freddie millionaires and tax cheats who run our government and (surprise!) Wall Street zillionaires, and illegal voters (both living and dead) and whacked out professors and judges and all the "Bigs" of Breitbart and (fill in the blanks–you know who they are) … is the Democrat Party. The whole ugly machine that FDR set up so adroitly, that has metastized so monstrously, exists solely to perpetuate its power. Duh.
Yes, and be CAREFUL where you get your NEWS from…
old media, along with politicians, seem to be the last people on earth to appreciate that we now live in the information age
I will not be completely satisfied of the sea change until the alphabet news networks are showing "Knives Auction Tonight" and reruns of "Saved by the Bell" 24/7. As long as Couric (et. al.) are allowed to lie lie lie to the American public without being spanked even harder than the web and talk radio is doing, then we have a lot of fighting left to do.
I'm humored by the fact that the MSM is like one trying to ditch the blind date. Too late, guys, we're onto to you and we got your change right here!
A primary step in defeating progressivism is to control the language. The left has known this for decades, which is why they have worked assiduously to assign slick memes and slogans to whatever their current issue happens to be. Those phrases and labels are then quickly taken up by the Old Left Media to infect the brains of their readers and thereby skew the ensuing public discourse.
Conservatives should wake up and start to do the same. For the progressive media, instead of “MSM” I suggest ‘Old Left Media’, which taunts them as being out-of-date, being shills for the left, and connotes the idea that they are being left behind.
He who controls the language, controls the debate.
It is amazing how much things have changed in the past year. MSM is now exposed, bare, standing naked before the American people who have their glasses on! It is not a pretty site!
And so we see another example of the left. Why not simply state their position and present reasonable facts that support that position. They are the self appointed elites and the Borg like sheep that will follow them to slaughter. Unable to think for themselves or even articulate a common sense argument, they are left with only smear tactics to further their agenda.

" Much like the wind blows, there is no discernible source, but still we know it blows."
This is a brilliant and poignant analogy of the power we face as Truth seekers, constantly fighting the strong headwinds of Leftist dogma.
I contend the source of the "wind" is the Public School system that turns out a constant supply of brainwashed drones, who want to "change the world" with their "journalism" degree. And the ones who don't become "journalists", buy the party line of Liberal drivil hook, line, and sinker……
The infiltration of the Media was pretty much complete then along came Rush, FOX News, and finally the Internet.
But until we do something to break the lefts hold on the educational system, there will always be a 20-40% segment of the voters who buy into liberal fiction and half-truths "blown" at them constantly.
Unless we fundamentally change the structure of the primary grade school system, the 20-40% problem will always be that nebulous "ill- wind" steering important elections to the Left. (Like Nov 2008)
Great article.
I wonder how we can get Google to drop its bias, and allow the BIGS as Google News sources. They allow Huffpo, and quite a few other quite liberal blogs in their news-search, but not anything remotely conservative, unless you count WSJ.
My biggest problem with the new media is that it's targeted and, in my opinion, too narrowly focused. I've mentioned here before that, given the wild success of FoxNews in the otherwise failing television news market, I think that if a conservative, BIGS-inspired and internet-fueled newspaper modelled after USA Today would probably end up being the MOST SUCCESSFUL NEWSPAPER IN U.S. HISTORY.
THE 'HOOD IS NOT READING THE BIGS, OR THE BLOGS.
You have to seek out this "New Media." Unfortunately, the news-getting tactic employed by most of the Americans we want and need to read involves walking in the door and hitting the TV-remote. IF THAT. Many on the left don't even watch the news, ever, and get 'what they know' from rumors and their favorite pop-stars.
How do we reach, with new media, the people who are still ignorant of its existance, save for the occasional demonization done by the MSM of one new-journalist or another.
I ALSO THINK IT IS TIME TO DITCH THE TERM "BLOGGER" FOR NEW-JOURNALIST, and that NEW JOURNALIST should become the standard. It never will with the press, they need a word to stamp on repeatedly, like they have with "blogger", but those new-media journalists who would be respected ought to call themselves what they are, and that is Journalists. Reporters. Newsmen. REAL ones. Ignore the elitist view that "Journalist" is an anointed, blessed, Ordained By the Gods position in a religious denomination. That is how they see it.
The new media understands that the days of Ordained Journalists are over, and that one does not need a licence, a blessing, a Columbia diploma, a certification, or any official approval whatsoever to investigate, observe, report what happened, and even to opine. THEY NEED TO GET IT THROUGH THEIR HEADS, THEY ARE NOT HIGH PRIESTS.
So lets do away with "blogger" when we mean new-media journalist., and lets show the newspapers how to make a newspaper that actually sells. Microsoft can make an XBOX and intentionally take a loss for the first four years of it''s availability, just for games. But no uber-rich conservative can do the same TO SAVE CIVILIZATION. WHY? Sony is still selling the PS3 at a net loss. For video games. But no group of wealthy conservatives will do the same, and make a good, truth-seeking national newspaper, almost guaranteed to do like Fox has done, not even to save one's nation? It makes no sense. Just an idea.
New media's wonderful, but it ain't reachin' the hood, or the housewife.
it started with "the most trusted man in america,", walter cronkite, lying to us that the tet offensive was a victory for the NVA. that was when propaganda began to replace facts.
watergate furthered the process by inspiring a whole generation of J-schoolers to emulate woodward and bernstein.
their last gasp of victory was getting obama elected.
now they will pay.
I know these people, tv-news-only folks. They have internet, this demographic. They are pretty much afraid to use it, convinced by their morning shows that the internet will probably destroy their multi-hundred-dollar computer, and if that doesn't happen, someone will steal your identity and credit cards, if they're not already watching you through your camera. Every move they make online is with fear, programmed well by their morning-shows.
But they go to Tide.com and ABC.com and Gilette.com and everyfrigginproduct.com with no fear at all. Because there's cool stuff there, and Joy Freakin Behar or some slunt on TV goes there!
JUST LIKE THEY ARE PROGRAMMED. Freakin twilight zone people.
I think you've got it exactly right. Rather than being journalists reporting the news, they denounce and distort what they disagree with, and praise what they do agree with, or don't report on what ' the little people wouldn't understand'.
Things like the push by the Federal Government by the likes of Arne Duncan and Cass Sunstein to take over local school districts and consolidate them into state consortiums, putting their own Fed picked teachers in place 'as needed' and removing all remaining local control from our children's education – you'd think that would be worth reporting on to parents – nyah. I had to hear about it from a teacher desperate to get peoples attention.
It falls to Citizen Journalists like this "Race To The Takeover", and concerned parents like me to get the word out.
Shameful.
MSM is coming face to face with a conservative reality-at the end of the day, the market forces rule. One by one MSM outlets are dying out from the NYT to the progressive line-up on CNN,MSNBC,and all their like. No one is buying what they are selling, and they are going down as a result. Capitalism at it's finest. Like other species that became extinct, they seemingly are unaware that their very days are numbered, and even if MSM print outlets lobby effectively enough for their very own bailout, it will only postpone the inevitible. Incumbent politicians face the same reality from a fed-up nation of voters. When that day is fully realized, the MSM and their puppets in Washington, and vice versa can bring each other coffee in the unemployment line.
Are you saying Obama or leftist drivil, or both, is their "blind date"?
So, the event in the video was sort of a Bizarro Tea Party protest FOR socialized health care? Pretty pathetic. The FIRST tea party rally we had in our small town, in the middle of a work day, drew a much larger and much more passionate crowd.
I went to the HCAN website, and it says: "We’re holding rallies all over the country to send Congress a message: We need them to get health reform done and get it done right. Enter your zip code to find events in your area:" Unfortunately, there were none that I could find within 100 miles, so I looked at their entire list of events. It was limited to a few in California and one in Releigh, North Carolina. Oh, the passion.
It's tempting to say that there has been a paradigm shift, but the fact is that the Progressive-Liberal-Commie activists have always been a tiny minority. It has been their accomplices in the MSM that have made their pathetic rallies seem like a groundswell, when it truly has been anything but that.
WE are the groundswell, WE are the grassroots, and WE are sick of letting a tiny faction drive the debate, ruin our country and erode our freedom. WE know what the LameStreamMedia has been doing, and having been exposed, their lies won't work on us any longer.
Yes. There seems to be some sort of problem. I am wondering if someone has hacked it?
Big Hollywood, Big Government, Big Journalism…I cannot wait until BIG EDUCATION!
I am an "old school" journalism graduate, UNC-1961. I left journalism because most news outlets adopted a political agenda and became strictly partisan, incomplete, inacurate and dishonest. I couldn't stomach it any longer. Fortunately, I found a need that needed filling, formed my own companies (two) and made millions. Now I sit back and laugh at the so-called journalists who are out of work, or soon will be, and don't understand how they committed job suicide with their leftism.
Journalists used to be skeptical of all power, public or private. their job was to apply sunlight to the dark corners of institutions. The job was to "look out" for John Q. Public. Now, mainstream journalism is to only expose and attack those groups or movements that you disagree with. Reporting is not longer about getting all the facts, just your set of facts, truthful or otherwise.
Oh yeah, you know Andrew has made some new best friends. Certainly the powers that be at BG are aware?
I sure hope so.
We wouldn't want Max Blumenthal flinging a booger in here, and gumming up the machinery, would we?
And didn't I read somewhere that The National Enquirer is up for a Pulitzer for doing the job that the MSM just wouldn't do?
They're posting at Big Government. You can see it at Breitbart.com.
I got the same message all morning, and finally gave up.
It's not that the LAMB stream journalists can't see what's happening, they don't know what to do about it. That's because they were taught by insulated, ideologue journalism professors who are totally out of touch with reality and still 'teach' by the old playbook.
When college degreed journalism(ts) breaks the stranglehold of leftist, liberal, socialist ideologue's in Academia then and only then will they become viable and pertinent. Until then they will continue to do the same things they have over and over again expecting a different result. (isn't that the definition of insanity?)
I take that back. The last post at Big Government appears to have been at 5:31 this morning. "Did Andrew Breitbart ‘Breakdown’ At CPAC?"
Fifty years ago, if you graduated from an accredited journalism school, you were presumed “unbiased.”
If there were even such schools then. Fifty years ago there were no barriers to entry, no guild system in place, no academic conceit, no groupthink herd mentality to becoming a good journalist if you had talent and an unbiased eye.
What passes for journalism now is pathetic, a herd of boring politizied lefty sheeple that stylize a product for a paycheck. It's the same formulaic rot that infects Hollywood. History and the American public that isn't brain dead have moved on.
Good article, but as a journalist you need to use your tools (words) correctly.
"…Who's show is just after mine" is incorrect grammar. "Who's" is a contraction of "who is." I think you're looking for "whose," meaning possession.

LBJ and 1964 happened.ALL social engineering laws should immediately be rescinded and reviewed for cost accountability,if it loses or is inefficient,GONE!!!!!!Across the board, everything, execept defense(government's ONLY reason to exist)and even that would need a >%75 rating.
Not that anybody wearin' a Smokey-the-Bear Hat and a duty belt ever encroached on our ……..space.
Nah…….never.
Jeeez,
Get a load of the Gore Vidal Halloween costume that Jaco clown is wearing in the article link.
Tut, tut……I am soooooooo intelligent you internet readers you.
More like a pant-load.
Wow, that Jaco person is a piece of filth. I wonder if that Sharp Elbows fellow felt the need to shower after talking to him?
The elite liberal media lost the potential for $billions in advertising by giving Democrats free publicity. Maybe they would still have 20 percent profit margins if they were fair and balanced?
Yes, and instead of having to lay off reporters, they could be hiring like Fox!
Drifter
Well said and talk about "sharp elbows"! Rush swings daggers…
LOL
Yea, VOUCHERS and business oriented State Legislatures are the only way to turn the red tide.
In the election last year that fostered in the New Administration what we saw was a mental and physical breakdown of massive proportions when it came to reporting on the presidential candidates, “who they were” and “what they were” the candidates past, present and future outlook on America and it’s relationship in the world etc…
I am still stunned by the blatant “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” culture of corruption that has become normal operating procedure in the main stream news media, which can only be described as: “journalistic malpractice”. They’re not even attempting to hide their over the top in the bag (and I don’t mean Tea-Bag) bias reporting.
Sad for them that any 4 year old can easily operate a cell phones video functions. I go nowhere without my camera. It is becoming harder and harder for them to create their own version of news. The fairness doctrine has kind of be shoved to the wayside I believe, by them… reason being MSN would have to actually allow the opposing view to be aired, and that would be a problem now wouldn’t it?
Toss them a bag of cement with We the People on it.
While Obama is synonymous with leftiist drivel I suppose I could have been more articulate. Apologies.
Wow – they REALLY don't like the tables being turned on them – arrogant bastids!
The difference is that you probably know to use a breath mint afterward.
Heh, I can tell by reading your copy that you enjoy your balck coffe!
Actually, it's pretty clear from the video that Jaco didn't see the concealed camera, even when it was mentioned that they had one. That didn't seem to register with him. So, as far as he was concerned he was shoving a person, not a camera. Though I agree with you in principle, I wouldn't test that "3 foot rule" smack down in court.
–a News Shooter
MSM bought into "The pen is mightier than the sword". The only problem is…. they thought they had the only pen.
Dr. Loudon,
Jaco derides what you say in your 15 minutes on his 3 hours because you bother him; and you bother him because you worry him. Good for you!
what a smug a@@hole! And lies like he thinks he clever? What a waste of skin.
the conduit is feminism. everything else is a runoff.
The treason of the media started long before watergate. I still remember watching Walter Cronkite covering the Vietnam war and saying 'all is lost'.
It was the media (particulary Walter Cronkite — along with Jane Fonda and Hollywood) who convinced the NVA to continue the fight after their defeat in the Tet offensive – General Gaip of the NVA even stated so in his book didn't he?. *THAT* was flat out treason. and extended the war for a long time (and managed to get a lot of americans killed).
Who knows how long before that they were spewing their dogma. Its a wonder we aren't a communist country today.
McGraw Milhaven – a legend in St Louis radio? Are you kidding me. The only thing McGraw is a legend in in his own small mind. One of the dumbest talk jocks going – almost as dumb as Jaco, but not quite.
Ha. Maybe a lasso dallied off to a nice, big rock.
Hey, Cowboy! How's your roping skills?
Hmmm. Point.
Dr Loudon may want to put out some resumes to other stations, just in case the one she works for goes belly up.
If he is that close, an "accidental" step on his arch might do wonders for some orthopedic surgeon's bank account.
Paul Harvey help break trail for Rush, even if he did support gun control for a while.
Control of the language also allows redefining words so they can control the dialog. Consider the redifining of "racism", "bigotry", etc.
Paul Harvey was a good draw, but his segment was too short.
Buckley? IIRC, I could not stand him. Nor did I ever see him anywhere but TV.
Good day!!
"THE AMERICAN PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM"
By the stories my Nephews and Nieces tell me that 'system' should be renamed 'Left-wing Indoctrination System'
…and it is being paid by us the Tax Payers!
The media's always been biased. We used to know officially where they stood. Newspapers were call the " Our Town Republican" or the "Their Town Democrat.
Somewhere this phony notion of being "unbiased" came in. It's impossible.
The REAL problem is that conservatives, as they have with education, law and the arts, abandoned the field, leaving it to the liberals.
What we see now is Conservatives re-entering the fight. And that's good. Very good.
Atlas could have shrugged, but instead he picked up a camera & a micorphone, the new media is here !!! MSM you are done. Could not have happend to a nicer bunch of fools.
No doubt this guy got what he deserved. I'm speaking more generically… When I see a camera jammed in people's faces on TV I cringe, wondering why they don't smack the crap out of those cameras. If my arm can reach it, it's too close.
As a former journalist who became disillusioned with the journalism industry and left, I don't mourn it. But I'm not sure the solution we've found – just listen to the commentator you agree with – is any better than what we had before.
I think what happened to American journalism had to do with Watergate.
Woodward and Bernstein changed forever news reporting in America, they became 'Rockstars' after their reporting helped bring down an American Presidency and every other reporter wanted to be rich and famous just. like. them.
Unfortunately they also let their political affilliation help choose their targets.
What I think most Americans would like to see our newsrooms practice from a consumers point of view is that News gatherers simply first; get the facts of a story, uncolored by political bias and second; Report that story in the same way.
Inform us with the information gathered and let us decide the political ramifications for the politicians involved.
We know that a state governor who goes to hookers is wrong just as we know a governor who tries to interfere in a police investigation of a trusted aide is wrong as well.
The public needs straight news to make decisions based on accurate unbiased information.
If the so-called legacy media can't or won't provide us with that information,We'll find somewhere else.
That somewhere else is the internet.
It's a whole new(s) world.
Hey Cowboy! Are you having any trouble getting on Big Government. I keep getting security warning, and it wants to download a file form BG to my computer. Looks like a virus?
Since when is a camera a weapon, when it is being used to capture your image in public? There's no constitutional right to redefine your own rules of assault and battery. Expect to get YOURSELF sued, or arrested, if you do.
Nothing happened. There has always been biased journalism. Remember the yellow press? The press during the civil war era was arguably even more biased than today. Lincoln's cronies had journalists jailed if they didn't tow the line. I think the problem is almost no one has any historical context. Our era is always the worst, best, or first and nobody knows any different. Ghastly and sickening.
Socialists take heed: Conservatives are on God's side. We have the brains, we have the majority, we have the bullets and, most importantly, we have the will. Our boot is on your neck.
When ? TET OFFENSIVE 1968. Who ? "Uncle Walter" Why ? ….
This is all great news, I'll just say the conservative voices now need to be very alert for official attempts to shut them down.
In the 60's the Left discovered the activist/protest culture and never stopped. Conservatives were too busy working and keeping the country safe and solvent. It's long past time to take a page from there book and get conservatives to get into professions like media, education and law. The country's future depends on it.
Just finished reading Barbara Tuchman's chronticle of the 14th Century, "A Distant Mirror." Her depiction of the insulated arrogance of the French nobility, who refused to learn even from repeated stunning defeats at the hands of English, Flemish, and Swiss yeomen, merchants and peasants, reminds me of our own clueless MSM. Like the French aristocrats, they refuse to learn even from their failures.
It is so sad to see the leftist corruption of so many institutions, on so many strategic levels. And this monopoly of power MSM held for so long is being lost because they insist on fighting a losing battle against the truth. There is something unfair and truly unbalanced with these MSM journalists, because they are driven by an ideology. Global Warming/Climategate also comes to mind. Our universities harbor the likes of Ward Churchills, spewing their anti-American venom. And all are allied with Omama. And the real reason their power is being lost is really lost. They failed to tell the the truth to the American People. The failed to defend and protect our democracy. They have no honesty, they have no intregity. And we know now that they cannot be trusted ever again.
Granted that Dr Loudon's perception of a "journalist" is the prevailing one for the past 50 year, but you only need look at old movies from the 40's like "Front Page" to get a look at how "journalists" have typically been portrayed. "Reporters" were widely considered low-down scum for a good bit of our country's history, and today's MSM typifies why that was so.
From someone who has toiled in the vineyards of journalism, public relations and advertising for most of the last 58 years, I'd say that the turnabout came with the campaign and administration of JF Kennedy. I don't remember the press fawning over Truman or Eisenhower, but "Camelot" and Jackie became too much for the "coffee and cigarette" gang to attack. That gave the left-leaning a chance to be heard. Follow that with the 60s and 70s when I was in graduate school in Boston, followed by the d-dodgers getting educational deferments through PhDs, and the J-schools were bent into that point of view.
Great column. I saw that incident on the web and that guy embodies the arrogance of the old media.
"These decadent ba$tards are going down." Andrew Breitbart
I agree about space but it wasn't a TP rally. It was a rent a mob support Obamacare rally. He was there to cover/support them. I read it as a leftist talker in his element being challenged about his on air disparaging remarks about TP folks. He tolerated the camera space thing until he figured out he was be exposed and challenged.
GOD bless you AB
And porchhound; God bless you as well and thank you for your service.

Paul Haarveey and Wm. F Buckley Jr. were there but their principled Conservative stand was not taken seriously or even examined until 1988. Coinciding with the arrival of Limbaugh on the national scene….
Oh, I wouldn't say his career was completely "uneventful." Check out this video of Jaco FAKING a news report during the first Persian Gulf War. It would be hilarious if it weren't so pathetic!

When was there an era of Pure Unbiased Truth Telling Jounalism? Remember Duranty. Winchell, Pegler? And let us not forget the great Herbert Matthews of the NYT, who just loved Castro during FC's time in the Cuban mountains.
"The bell tolls for thee" — Uh oh…better look out now. A blog site with 300 people is taking over the MSM. Better throw out your TVs. Look at all the advertisers just lining up to advertise their products on websites that feature race-baiting, homophobia and punks who video tape themselves committing felonies. Wow! Oops, I mean SHAM-WOW!!! LOL
Jimmy Durante was a vaudeville entertainer, not a journalist.
Gary you have done a very nice job of summarizing the MAIN culprits from the Progressive Left who have tried to steal our country right out from under us. Add Wilson (IncomeTax-Fed) and LBJ to this group, with supposting roles by the pusillanimous Peanut Farmer and the toadying RMN, and I believe the list is almost complete.
I might add that the debt we as Conservatives owe to RUSH for his breakthrough accomplishments will be even more obvious in 50 years.
I too envision the day when the Alphabets are showing soap opera's at 6pm instead of the cloying Couric and the New York Slime is a weekly shopper in Long Island. Can't happen soon enough.
The MSM is a Clown Car.

[...] LOUDON: Ask Not For Whom the Bell Tolls, MSM: It Tolls for Thee. Actually, the MSM has been tolling its own bell for decades. This isn’t a death, it’s a [...]
Fox News Channel and Rush Limbaugh predated all of this.
Also, there never was unbiased news. Cronkite was a leftist; so is Dan Schorr, who learned his craft from Edward R. Murrow. "Unbiased" is a silly myth.
Nice try, troll.
There are far more than 300 here.
Do you understand that your Alinsky-inspired cries of "racist," "homophobe" and "criminal" are falling on deaf ears?
You still can't fathom what happened last month in MA, can you? And you are certainly unaware that the NYT, LA Times, Boston Globe and other liberal shill rags are all in the red?
Laugh it up all you want – just remember to drop by here on Wed. November 3rd, okay? We'll be looking for you.
Keep up the smug, dipshit — it only empowers us.
Down the sewage system of old media, and not a day too soon.
Myself, I feel nothing but despair when I read an article like this with no mention of Bill Buckley. Almost no voice? Buckely's voice will be heard long after Limbaugh is gone.
I like Rush, but he's no Buckley in the sense Rush didn't create modern conservatism, Buckley did. Rush helped usher in Bush, while Buckley helped usher in Reagan.
When as a movement Rush is our "leader" and not Buckley, we lose. We get McCain, Bush, and Dole representing our party, as opposed to Reagan and Goldwater.
MSM long ago bought into the European version of advocacy journalism. Before that it was yellow journalism and unthinking rah, rah, rah (think the Colonel's Chicago Tribune during WWI and after). American newpapers have never been about straight journalism except in a few exceptions.
During the consolidation of the great newspaper empires, the polemical sheets were absorbed and in time the business model began to pay lip service to "objectivity." But as the academy turned ever leftward and began indoctrinating as much as educating, perhaps more, the journalism schools turned out people with left wing political agendas. Gradually, they took over.
Took my first journalism class in September of 1975 at Bowling Green State University. They breathlessly told us about New Journalism and how it was revolutionizing the way a story is told. They offered Tom Wolfe, Gay Talese, Joe Eszterhas and Hunter Thompson as folks to emulate. (They didn't stress hard enough, however that those people, those New Journalists, were already accomplished Old Journalists by the time they started and that much of what they wrote appeared not in newspapers, but in magazines and books.) The message got corrupted. The lines were blurred.
Couple that with such courses as "Revolutionary Thought" and "Psychology 101" and you know the rest of the story.
Before long, even the kids writing the obituaries were dreaming of book deals.
Journalism was slightly better off when it was taught to young men and women who "swept the floor" at the local paper rather than attending a major university.
You are right on!! But just a small comment. When you say about physicians that "first "she" should do no harm" , I believe that you should say the PC thing—"he or she should do no harm". Thank you
Isn’t it funny when lefty opinion spinners claim not to know the meaning of the term “teabagger?” They thereby admit to being too ignorant to be to have their views taken seriously. But I guess that is better than admitting that they knowingly trying to disparage those they do not like with the vile term.
The condescension of Jaco was truly amazing.
Actually, what happened was Watergate. Woodward and Bernstein's example lured a flock of Boomers into the news business with romantic notions of what a journalist should do, and be. Meanwhile, an increasing number of two-income households had no leisure to read the paper or watch the news.
All these changes coincided with my 22 years in the trade. Boomer journalists weren't liberal, so much as reflexively cynical (because they thought it sounded smart). During the Reagan, Bush and Clinton periods, reflexively cynical tended to sound tediously left-wing.
Learn from the healthcare bill debacle. The people, rightly in my opinion, distrust big, sudden changes. It's much better to insist on ranking it all and deleting the bottom 5% every year. That's a relatively small change that we can institutionalize and will catch the bad stuff on an ongoing basis. A good government clean out of the garbage shouldn't wate for a national spasm of disgust at how bad things are getting. It should be a regular part of our civic life.
Thanks for saying this out loud. I'm so sick of people saying that journalism was once an honorable profession. They've always been payed gossips. My fathers cousin was a Marine Colonel in Vietnam when Cronkite was having his hissy fits on the national news. I developed a real contempt for that clown (Cronkite that is) because of that exposure. I haven't watched TV news in decades and when the Web came along I stop reading the bird cage liners as well.
I disagree that nobody should toss them a line. It's a longstanding american tradition that bad businesses get tossed a line via bankruptcy regularly. Move the assets to more sane hands quickly and we'll do much better than recreating the news gathering business from scratch.
[...] …the bell tolls for thee. [...]
So many people imagine themselves to be thinking, when in fact all they're doing is rearranging their prejudices.
I'm going to second firefirefire's thoughts that the current decline of journalism began with Woodward and Bernstein. Prior to Watergate, the understood role of the journalist was to document politics, either in an unbiased or biased fashion.. What those two, and Cronkite did was introduce the idea of the journalist as a active participant in politics, without the actual responsibilities of governing that politicians had to contend with.
Get on your state's board of education. Most places its an elected position and the qualifications are laughable. We've done our best to keep conservatives elected to the board here in Texas for a long time.
The National Association of Scholars is pretty much on target.
NAS.ORG
For some time I've thought that the Loony Left considers degradation of the nation's educational capability as fundamental to their goals. To wit, people who never learned to think for themselves should be much easier to control. Here's the part that just occurred to me: with a largely uneducated populace, who is going to support (i.e. buy the product of) the mass media? Has the MSM/LSM been had by their own? It wouldn't be the first time the Left has cannibalized their own supporters.
It's my belief that what happened "between a half-century ago and today" was the Vietnam War and Watergate, overlapped with the hippie generation, where it became cool to use the press to try change the world for the better. It became conventional wisdom that the role of the journalist was to "do good." This meant identifying good guys and bad guys. Select and protect those leaders with the progressive mind-set needed to bring about a better tomorrow. Down with war hawks and sponsors of corporate greed! Since then, the media industry has more or less self-selected for progressives, while conservatives head for less utopian and more practical disciplines.
That is great…..turn the cameras back on them
COnservatives and right minded people need to continue to get out there with the cameras…record record record…….
I love it….flip the script………
Please listen, as I will explain the change in journalism over the last 40 years: What is different, is that today the government runs, controls and regulates EVERYTHING, from who is allowed to go into space to how much water you are allowed to flush your crap down the toilet. EVERYTHING falls within the governments purview of what is can steal and who it can give it to.
So the stakes are infinitely higher now than they were in 1950. Journalists know they should be unbiased and dispassionate but when they can affect who gets stolen from and who receives it, they simply cannot resist the temptation.
It is our job to identify the MSM, personalize them, and then destroy them…..;-)
Pentagon Papers. NYTimes. Watergate. Berstein. Woodward. WaPo. NYT puts itself above the interests of its country and gets away with it. WaPo sponsored two "investigative" reporters turning them into media stars. Young idealists thereafter want to be rich and famous investigative reporters who expose evil and corrupt politicians, bureaucrats and military types who are predominantly conservative, law and order types. Key? You got to be Lincoln Steffans-like to do this. You got to be idealistic and very liberal in thought and outlook. That's what J-schools turned out. That's what we got for the last two generations. Case closed.
What Happened was Watergate.
Ever after, people who went into journalism did so in order to Make A Difference (i.e., pursue an agenda).
What formerly was journalism now is nothing more than Jerna-Lizzum.
So it goes.
After divorcing a "liberated" woman, I became liberated from leftist ideology, and have become more conservative. Any question that I was conservative was answered when I noticed the female host of NPR asking the head of a woman's group "Why is Barack Obama is the right man to become President?" Shouldn't that have been "Why do you think….?" I think the media was fed up with Clinton after 8 years, and gave G.W. a pass, and we should be grateful they did. THey realized that, and were happy to get on the Obama bandwagon. Feminism and liberalism are slippery slopes that will be hard to reverse.
What did Churchill say? "If you're not a liberal when you're 20 you don't have a heart, and if you're not a conservative at 40 you don't have a brain."
That's "Walter Duranty", closet Communist and Pulitzer Prize winner.
That was an awesome video! I hope that we see more and more citizen journalists out keeping these people honest! Thanks for your good work Dr.!
The revolution in media had 4 great moments:
a) The arrival of Rush – the start of conservative talk radio.
b) The start of Fox News – non-liberal news network.
c) Drudge breaking the Monica Lewinsky story – using the internet to bypass MSM suppression of unfavorable (to them) stories.
d) Rathergate – the rise of the blogs (how ironic that the chief blogger who broke this has now become a frothing lefty.)
KMOX is the 50,000 watt blowtorch of the Midwest. Rush is on it. It ain't going anywhere.
You should watch the Cary Grant movie – "His Girl Friday"
It was never as you remembered it. The news business was always corrupt.
lol!
When we had a varied media ownership in this country, you could get different points of view, and the fact that there WERE different points of view out there tended to keep everyone in line.
But as the poet Ezra Pounds noted, way back in the 1920s, the fact that a small group of elite jewish bankers were given the very lucrative contract of being able to charge the Federal Government interest on it's own money, meant that no Gentile could really compete in lobbying the government, or participating in the fledgling media industry. Though we did give it a good try. The jews just had too much of a financial advantage.
Here we are nearly 100 years later, and the jewish domination of government and media is complete. You get no difference in opinion. You get NO news reporting that is harshly critical of Israel or the jewish lobby. When Israel attacks one of our warships (the USS Liberty), not ONE single news agency reported it. When children were buried alive in Gaza last year, you didn't learn about that.
Fact it America, your government and media (as if there is any real difference at this point) are securely under the control of an organized lobbying group that represents a country that is not your own. And their loyalties clearly do not lie with yours, even though they largely own it. Their loyalties are very much at odds with YOUR own interests in fact, especially if you are White.
So you need not wonder at all the anti-white bias in the media today. You need only study the history of Europe over the past 1,000 years, and wonder how the jews manage to screw up nation after nation after nation, with SO MANY notable great leaders who have warned us of the danger this lobbying group represents.
America continues to ignore the jewish lobby to it's very great peril. And the Tea Party has exactly ZERO chance of effecting any real change in the policies of this government whilst they continue to pledge their allegiance to Israel.
