This past week marked one of the strangest periods of my life. And yes, the arrest of my friend and colleague James O’Keefe had a lot to do with it. James found himself, once again, in the middle of a raging media battle all because he wanted to shine a little light on public corruption. Let me tell you something, he certainly rang in the New Year with this one. As James said:
My goal is to expose corruption and lack of concern for citizens by government and other institutions…
Target: Mary Landrieu. Why: she’s been taking legal “bribes” in the form of the “Louisiana Purchase” in exchange for her vote on Sen. Harry Reid’s healthcare bill, and ignoring phone calls from her outraged constituents. Bold, dirty, rude politics at its finest.
Putting his head down, and plowing ahead, James was off to New Orleans working on a new project. A project that would hopefully raise questions, demand answers, and spur people to action.
The complication: James and three of his colleagues were arrested in the process. (Although now the U.S. Attorney in charge of the case has recused himself, a sure sign that the case is rapidly crumbling.)
For 48 hours, rampant rumors of phone taps, possible felonies, rash behavior and the phrase “Watergate Jr.” spread like wildfire. No one knew the reality of the situation. Even I was very concerned by the initial reports. I had no inkling of this project and once again found myself a victim of the MSM’s filthy, desperate and fact-free drive-by reporting. As Galileo famously said:
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them.
The truth eventually began trickling out and it appears Mary Landrieu’s office vastly exaggerated the situation, and yet the MSM ran with it. Rachel Maddow of MSNBC could barely contain her glee:
Note to everyone: throwing out words like “wiretapping” in regards to a federal phone system is the equivalent to screaming “bomb” on an airplane….Don’t say it unless you mean it. Or else, all the attention will zero in on you and things will quickly get complicated.
In fact, Landrieu’s overreaction to O’Keefe’s video project ought make the public wonder what the heck is actually going on in the office that her constituents are permitting her to occupy for at least a little while longer. But instead we had ACORN’s CEO, Bertha Lewis, using the incident as an opportunity to, once again, excuse her employees’s behavior in our “ACORN Housing helps underage sex slave” videos. We saw inappropriate and vicious attacks from the MSM, and watched some members of a movement turn its back on a man they considered a hero less than a week ago.
What I’ve learned is this: the MSM is the primary force of the Democratic Party. If the MSM is lying to you, guess who else is? Someone has to feed them stories. Time and time again the MSM has been caught in a self-created web of lies, and the vast majority of these reports do one thing, and that is mask the true, ugly face of liberalism.
Listen, the MSM is officially beyond biased and slanted reporting. Right now, it is on the “bold dishonesty” level. They are essentially pelting the public with hot, stinky manure, and it is completely insulting.
Fortunately, there are ways around the MSM’s nonsense. Andrew Breitbart has made the new media trendy, and after the ACORN videos everyone and his conservative dog was aboard the new-media campaign bandwagon. Yet, the moment an unsubstantiated report on James was leaked, the rank and file of our movement exposed themselves as vulnerable to the MSM as anyone
For instance, Michelle Malkin, a once avid supporter/defender of James and all his work, called for an example to be made out of him, and instructing other young journalists to not follow in his footsteps. Again, this was before she knew his side of the story.
The bottom line is, conservative elites are afraid of the MSM. They are constantly two-steppin’ to stay in their good graces while secretly cursing them beneath their breath. It is no wonder they’ve had their rear ends handed to them so badly in past elections. I’m telling you, if conservatives don’t put on their game faces and strap on their big-boy boots, our nation’s demise is imminent.

Why do I think the MSM and the Liberals were so perversely obsessed with the possibility of James being a wannabe “Watergate Jr.?” They lie, because despite all their money and power, they are scared. Not of the Republicans or Conservative movement, but of citizen journalists who hold truth in the highest regard. These people are at large, and on the rise. Which means some major power players have a lot to be afraid of.

Good article, Hannah. I agree. Those who place themselves higher than others are always afraid of the 'rabble'. It's time for them to understand that 'rabble-power' is exactly what this country was founded on.

It's interesting to note that other Democratic Congressional District Offices were plagued by "broken" telephones and full voicemail boxes during the healthcare reform legislation debate. Apparently, claiming the telephones aren't working is preferable to telling constituents their opinions don't count.

At least the press was forced to bring up the Acorn tapes for background.
And if it is a crime to misrepresent yourself in a federal building we have a lot of politicians pretending to be servants of the people who should be arrested.
The real value of this continuing story is keeping before the good people of Louisiana the fact that many could not get through to Landrieu to voice their complaints over the Louisiana purchase payoff, not to mention repulsion of the so-called health initiative. This simply escalated the frustration over this whole thing. The longer this resonates, the more all Louisianans will recognize this was not in keeping with all the good intentions and actions that surrounded post-Katrina, regardless of whether the phones were not working, turned off, or simply not staffed.
In Malkin's defense, the initial news reports painted a very bleak picture of what James was accused of doing, and Malkin and her peers didn't want to be hypocrites and defend bad behavior conducted by 'their side.'
Experience should tell us the first wave of reportage on a subject is often false these days, but it strikes me as outrageous that people will lie and spread falsehoods when they work in the news biz. Naive? No doubt. But it happens over and again. Bravo to Big Journalism for demanding correction after correction. At least someone is fighting the good fight.
Apparently Stimulus money is needed to repair the Democratic phone infrastructure.
This biased media and politicians do have a lot to fear, and truth-tellers like you and O'Keefe have shown a floodlight on the lies and corruption and runs from ACORN through the media, through our elected officials right to the Holder. Stand tall and keep fighting America, we are making progress!

This has been, and will be perceived as 'Nixonian' since the media dialogue almost writes itself: Poor, innocent Senator doing the people's work in her office was confronted by a horrifying undercover agent of the enemy who sought to end her career in the most outrageous fashion that all politicians fear, the truth.

I agree with your take on Malkin. I think most of us still operate under the assumption that when the media reports something, they still have the basic facts right even though we all know they're applying spin. But now they have crossed the line from reporting facts with spin to reporting fantasy with spin. I doubt many conservative commentators are going to make the mistake of believing the MSM even has a kernal of truth now.
Excellent article, Hannah, and right on the mark. I told my conservative friends to withhold judgment until we had the facts, yet many did not listen and ran with what the old media were reporting.
The MSM is the Old Stream Media. It has become and has been for decades what independent journalists battled for over two hundred years, the established media, a propaganda tool. Persons with a determination for freedom warned Americans about the MSM throughout our history. Two examples that come quickly to mind, Thomas Jefferson, "Advertisements contain the only truths to be relied on in a newspaper", as did Samuel Clemens "If you don't read the newspaper, you are uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you are misinformed". The Main Stream Media is to the liberals as Pravda was to the Soviet Communists, simply a tool of social indoctrination and slander.
Independent journalism has been the source of truth for Americans from colonial times. We can only expect the MSM to try to destroy free thinking independents, however the government will be the one to succeed. .
It's media malpractice and bias, yes, James and Andrew and Hannah, but it's more I think. The malpractice, for example, of the media covering the 2008 election of Obama at some point clearly stopped being malpractice (in law, malpractice or a "tort" is a breach of a duty of care for another) and became a much higher breach of ethics. By hopping into bed with Obama, for example, all the while suppressing stories about Acorn (a "gamechanger" to the NYT) and Khalidi (the LA Times' protection of "sources"), just to name two examples, the media is guilty of much more than malpractice.I think there's a subliminal hint in Hannah's last sentence. I think we're in for a much bigger expose than even the Acorn tapes in the not too far off future. This fuss in New Orleans was possibly a "warning" shot by some very major power player(s) fired at James, Hannah, Andrew B. and all the rest of us daring to expose and/or discuss the corruption in (big)government and (big)journalism.

Hannah is right to call out Michelle Malkin, though I'm guessing it took some courage on Hannah's part.
We do not have to blindly defend "our own" like so many of the Dems do. If James had done something heinous, he should have been pilloried for it. But it appears he likely didn't.
Hell, we don't even have to provide benefit of the doubt, really. Just refrain from opining until you have actual facts upon which to opine.
Maybe this will be a lesson to us all.

When Joe the Plumber was slandered and hacked by Obama and the dem's minions it was surely a trial for him, but I think by standing strong he has faired well coming out the other end. Same goes for Palin, the level of vitriolic sludge slung at her, and her own campaign turning on her because of their fear of the MSM, yet she seems to be emerging from the dark night even stronger because she has not conceded even a little to appease them. If the big boys and girls in the conservative party are quick to even think anything less than "Innocent till proven guilty" is appropriate…well then we are screwed. I do hope they read your story and think about what transpired out of their mouths and the potential danger it brings to the American people if they are so quick to judge. It was definitely unsettling what we were being told, but we all knew James would not do something illegal… And something as blatant as wiretapping? Give me a break!
I saw James on Hannity last night and was glad to hear him say he was "rethinking some of his methods of undercover journalism." I think this is imperative in this present climate. We are not living in the America I grew up in and there are enemies out there just waiting to jump on anything they can to make their point. Citizen Journalism is one of the strong weapons we have against this invasion within our government. It could be the very key that keeps us from falling over into the abyss. I think it would behoove anyone considering an undercover investigation to consult a Lawyer that can be trusted, to have a legal opinion on the situation, so nothing is overlooked. Youth and passion can blind our judgment at times….heck old age and passion can do the same. I have been guilty of both!

The tables were flipped when James was arrested with the other guys…the narrative was no longer the constituents being stonewalled and lied to…it was now about the "crime" of an investigative reporter going undercover…Mike Wallace would have spent his life in prison, if that was indeed a crime.
But Mike Wallace came from the "correct" side of the narrative.
One thing, Hannah…I KNOW it is hard to break ourselves of the habit…but you are a front line warrior…and must lead by example. We need to stop calling the entrenched media "mainstream". We MUST not give them that level of credibility…not a day longer.
No more. They have lost the privilege of being titled as our "main information stream source". Mass consumption media, filled with trans fats of distortion and empty calories of deceit.

I was going to suggest sending this on to Huff Po but, Ariana would probably have the person fired who posted it.
I think what they were trying to do was video tape the answering of the Landrieu office telephone when one of their group tried to call it. Since they knew exactly when their buddy would call, they would be in a position to record the call or if it was ignored. If the phone did not ring at the agreed to time then the phone system was fixed to not receive any calls. There could also be the number given out to the public was not the real number and therefore it would never ring from any caller. With a slimy whore like Landrieu nothing is too dishonorable for her or party.
Well O'Keefe needs to visit a few conservative offices and not violate statutes that prevent someone from misrepresenting themselves to gain entry into government buildings. Bargaining votes for favors is common practice among ALL the congress members. It's not right but then again it's the Republicans who fight the hardest against preventing lobbying reforms.

I heard Mr. O'Keefe on Hannity saying he did not want to discuss what he was actually doing in Landrieu's office with respect to the phones, because the investigation is ongoing. If he is entirely innocent here, as Ms. Giles implies, why can't he put out the whole story. I think it is Ms. Giles who is jumping to conclusions. The MSM (and no, I would not consider Ms. Maddow to be the MSM — if she is MSM then so is Mr. Hannity) has been remarkably restrained. It is Mr. O'Keefe and his colleagues who chose to go after a federal telephone system and to dress up and represent themselves as telephone repairmen with their buddy in a van outside; if the MSM briefly leaped to a conclusion that bugging was planned, well, it was not that much of a stretch.

The telephone repairman hat cam was un-needed, as a briefcase camera would suffice. And still: One never knows what other things this group had planned for that day–in that Federal Building. To say they were not there to wiretap leads me to think it may have been MORE than that…wiretapping or survelliance being the LESSER of illegal activities. Perhaps too–the conspirators were able to dispose of the bug before it could be discovered by FBI. I'm sure the FBI did a Bug Sweep of the immediate area–didn't they?
See, one cannot be entirely sure of the motives of these four conspirators. One can guess, perhaps throw chicken bones on the floor and hope for entropy…in the end chaos prevails. And a Federal crime was committed.

I admit it, I was taken by the MSM. I thought the facts were out and the facts were not good. I'm embarrassed, even humiliated, that the MSM was able to dupe me on this one. I said to someone, you have to be stupid to wiretap a federal phone line, that is an automatic loss without any hope for a win.

The biggest problem with the media is their mirrored thinking. They look at Fox News as some huge threat when the reality is they are centrist and lean right but have people of all sides speaking on every topic under the sun. The real issue here is that the media is dominated by leftists of all stripes. You want to confuse a liberal? I seem to remember the msm attacking citizen journalism as being to quick to report information. Supposedly one needed time to vet the story and get all the facts straight before reporting. Seems the msm is the pajama media in this instance. I notice in a few other stories reported here that the msm-propaganda machine actually takes time, if they don't need to pre-prejudice against someone with smears and slander, to write the leftist storyboard for the rest of their machine to follow and to determine which facts need to be ignored to protect leftist ideology and myth.

Even when I first read this story I realized that nothing the MSM said could be accepted without real verification, which will never include the statement of any know socialist, media or official. I already know that 85 percent plus of the visible media are propagandists for the socialist movement, that 85 percent of all public officials and employees are socialist, and that 85 percent of all "Academics" are socialist so nothing they say will ever be accepted by me as truth and I will never give anyone in these categories the "Benefit of the doubt". Frankly, The Justice department and the Federal and state policing agencies are also in doubt as well, just because they are under the thumb and the control of Courts that are also 85 percent socialist.
I'm pretty sure the list of ethical behavior doesn't include violating the law to get your story.

I read the Malkin posts at the time, as well as the updates. Maybe I was being objective, but I took away that Malkin was saying, "Don't rush to judgment. IF he broke the law, he should be prosecuted the same as any other citizen. That we are a nation of laws, and we will not further our cause by breaking them."
I commented at the time that we should wait for the facts before forming opinions.
At least the truth is coming out about this episode. If there was a crime committed, James should serve his time. It seems that there wasn't it was Landrieu's attempt to shy away attention from her office and her staffers.
Hannah, you and James have done an immersurable service to our nation. Exposing the fleshy underbelly of these Progressives was the best thing to happen to true journalism in a long time.
Hannah, thank for the post. When I first heard what O'Keefe had done, my initial reaction was, what did he find. Anyone who has followed the ACORN story knew something was up, that something was not quite ringing true. If we are going to play their game, we've got to start using some of their own rules against them, If conservatives cannot depend on the Old Guard to shake things up, we've got to trust and support the New ones to get the job done. And that includes O'Reilly and Limbaugh.
Unless all you whiners out there are doing something to stir things up. Spring could be interesting season this year. In times of war, even today in the middle east, armies hunker down for the winter, winter quarters. Winter is ending soon and spring will be here. Will we be ready?

Since when is it illegal to enter a Federal building, Eli? Any American citizen has the right to enter any federal, state or city property unless it is posted otherwise, which usually involves police tape. The only exception is a military base, for obvious national security reasons, and even that land belongs to the tax payers. We also have a little thing in this country called innocent until proven guilty. You might have heard of it. So yes, he SAID it was for the truth, so unless you can prove otherwise, it WAS for the truth. We believe in a bottom up, open ended form of government where we make our own choices. The old guard of the Government and political circles believe in a closed door policy and top down dictation.

Mr Keefe's had two men with him dressed as telephone repairmen. They told the receptionist that they were there to fix a problem with the Senator's phones. So far, so good. If the receptionist wasn't surprised at their appearance, and acknowledged having problems with the phone system, Mr O'Keefe's suspicions are confirmed and he has video to back up his claims. But the receptionist was surprised and denied knowing of any problems with the phones. Perhaps something is wrong with the system that the receptionist doesn't know about- some tampering that might cut off calls from complaining constituents. So the two "repairmen" attempt to access the local distribution panel where the office phone system and the local network meet to see if there has been tampering. Why didn't Mr O'Keefe include someone who had the technical knowledge to discover if tampering had taken place and to diagnose and describe how it was done? Perhaps an actual telephone repairman, surely there are some conservative ones. Telephone routing isn't simple wiring these days- it's fiber-optic cable and digital/analog I/O devices, digital switching and office routers etc. If you don't have the technical training, the Senator's system could have forwarded calls to Katmandu and you couldn't tell by simply looking at it.
