Counterinsurgency – “COIN” – is the military term for nation-building. The media throw it around like loose political change. But it’s useful not only in describing President Obama’s wavering policy in Afghanistan. As General McChrystal’s experience with Rolling Stone proves, the politically-activist media are an insurgent force that has to be dealt with in order to enable American voters to understand what is going on in the war.
Let us belabor a metaphor. If the liberal media are the Taliban, how shall the counterinsurgency be conducted?

The Pentagon’s strategy has to gel around the classic anti-guerilla tactic taught at the JFK Special Forces School at Fort Bragg.
General Stanley McChrystal and his “Team America” staff apparently forgot the lessons many of them were taught there. They apparently believed, to predictable result, that if you’re the coolest spec ops guys, everyone will automatically treat you as such no matter what you say or do.
A few years ago, I observed a part of the Green Beret school’s graduation exercise. For reasons long forgotten, it’s called “Robin Sage.” The principal objective, for “A-teams” of would-be grads, is to be inserted into the “Peoples Republic of Pineland,” find a designated guerrilla group (comprised of former SEALs, Green Beanies and such), earn their confidence and begin to “train” them. The “guerrillas” don’t make it easy on them.
Instead of reaching out to their possible allies in the media, McChrystal & Co. allowed one of what former Defense Secretary Rumsfeld might have called the “media dead-enders” to gain their confidence and report their unguarded moments.

Michael Hastings
After McChrystal’s defenestration, some Army old-thinkers now are ready to return to the rules of media engagement that served them so disastrously in the Vietnam Era: the media are the enemy to be shunned and scorned openly. But this produced nearly three decades of disaster, with the military receiving the coverage that an open media enemy should expect.
The lesson is nearly the precise opposite. Yes, the media – most of it at least – is comprised of people who are completely invested in the success of Barack Obama and will blame the military for every failure of his wrong-headed policies. The answer to that isn’t for the military to exile itself to another decade in the media wilderness.
The answer – for the military, not conservative politicians – is to do precisely what the JFK School teaches.
Most reporters, editors and broadcast producers are entirely ignorant of the military. And when embedded reporters spend a lot of time with our troops, they almost inevitably come to admire them.

Ernie Pyle
The answer is to carefully, discretely and continuously reach out to those in the media who aren’t the obvious dead-enders. Bring them into the training facilities. Put them in places where they can gain the knowledge essential to fair reporting. Allow them to observe, listen and learn what our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines and Coastguardsmen do. Educate them, gain their confidence and teach them what is important to convey to the public. Not every backseat ride in an F-15 will result in a convert, but many will.
And when the time comes to write or broadcast a story, you’ll at least get a fair shake.

We would be so much more well served by our media if some of our media had served in the military.
Surely after ten years of war we have vets who will go into journalism. It could be the one thing that returns
our media to objectivity, or at least something resembling balance. Not sure how to identify the "dead-
enders", until after they've done their damage. Some are pretty good 'actors' these days.
Always enjoy reading your pieces Mr Babbin
How do you get folks who seem to hate their Country, for whatever foolish reason, to write accurately about the Military. just because they spent a week embedded with them?
Committed leftists reporters are by definition anti- military, anti guns, basically anti- American.(.And most all are.)
I think it would be easier to infiltrate the NYTimes, as an editor, and rewrite accurately every story they put out and encourage them to cover stories that don't fit their their leftist narrative,..(i.e this "Journo list" outrage).,.. than to get them to be fair and accurate with the Military, the backbone of their freedoms…
And don't forget that with McChrystal's ouster, Michael Yon is once again to be embedded with US and UK forces in Afghanistan. If you need a concept of a less-brainwashed journalist, he's a place to start.
The die is cast in that WE are all thinking of how to TAKE DOWN the Corrupt Media! This is not something that should be let go because this is the best chance in a long time to define what the media has become to a MAJORITY Americans that is TRAITOROUS! I recently did a diary at Redstate with regards to taking down the Corrupt Media as the "journolist" has shown to be the Media Wing of the Democrat Party, it is attempting to effect elections which is against the law and if there are no laws written to address that specifically well there damn well should be!
Question: If the Lame Duck Democrats in Congress try to seize control of the country by granting amnesty to 15 million illegal aliens, what do we do?
You have hit the nail on the head by asking how to flip the media. If I'm reading you correctly, the answer is that you can't. Bush tried to reach out early in his administrstion to the likes of Teddy Kennedy and how did that work out?
The better question is how to change those within the media. The answer to that question is easy. We are. Just look to the people on this site and those like this.
We will have to take some physical. action.

They will have to get past the editors and producers to be of any use. Yon sets the best example (and the idiot who kicked him out of the Ashcan should be transferred to Antartica).
"One week"? No.
They need a couple of months, minimum.
Did you see a transformation in the journalist in the movie, "We Were Soldiers"? Maybe with the right person minds could be changed, but I doubt that in this day and age it will happen.

You read me correctly….They have a mind set that adheres to an antiAmerican narrative…
Sort of like the radical Islamist killers who come here, on visas , meet Americans,
have freedoms and liberties, enjoy life here, but still want to kill us for their "cause"..
It's a sick,deep brainwashing….And must be addressed at some point…
P_H
The time is unimportant….
It's an Obama-style, unchangable antiAmerican "mind set"…
Jed, This seems to be a little to simplistic. Yes reporters will respect our military a little more if they spend more time with them understanding their missions. This however will not get reporters to embrace the Mission.
In a time that the civilian leadership cannot define the mission how can you expect reporters to embrace what is not defined? Until we can define Evil we will not be able to define the mission. The US does not go to war to gain conquest, we should only go to war to fight Evil. The Media does not accept that Evil exist nor do many civilians.
An example would be Major Nidal Malik Hasan's military business card having SoA (Soldier of Allah) printed on it. Has the Media portrayed him as Evil killing 14 american service members. Or our civilian leadership not being able to use terms such as “jihadist,” “Islamist,” and “Islamic terrorism.” Instead we portray our Evil enemy as if they were cute little fluffy bunny rabbits. Train reporters, embed reporters but DEFINE THE MISSION FIRST that mission is KILLING EVIL!
Yes, it does need to be addressed. Islamist killers at the point of a gun. That's the easy part. The media will be tougher. Since our educational system is the root cause of that brainwashing, it must be gutted and re-built. How many 25 year old bloggers would have any idea of the significance of the picture Ernie Pyle? Joe Galloway? Who's he? Someday History, real History will be taught again in public schools. That's real hope and change.
Conservatives in general need to seriously consider going into fields such as journalism that they've let the left-wingers dominate for so long. Other key professions to start taking back are teaching and the arts.

Hence, my unaffectionate name for our PS system…The American "Madrassa"…

Putting out the truth through the NYT is an unlikely proposition, until one gets to be chief editor. Maybe infiltrate and put out the truth one finds buried there through outside web sites.
Personally I think Breitbart is on the right track. If we can keep The Won from bailing out the NYT permanently somehow, it should in fact show up on the auction block in the not too distant future. One can hope, and in the mean time keep building the alternative media.

HPD,
I just yesterday thought I would start calling US Public School "Madrassa's" for Progressive & Political Correct thought.
I see you have beaten me to it.
I believe it is the perfect comparison.
Yon is a VERY straight shooter and very valuable to we the readers.
What did Jane Fonda Learn via her 'embedding'? According to her, she learned that American soldiers were murderers. She claimed later that she regretted her actions and words vis-a-vis Vietnam. But now she's hanging out with Code Pink. Leftists cannot learn. That is why they are leftists. Rather than trying to show them anything, which has never worked and has often given them more to twist, let's just stop buying their newspapers and magazines and/or watching their biased, in-the-tank news networks. They can spew all the nonsense they want as they circle the drain and float blissfully into the sewer of irrelevancy.

I really like the 1984-style addition you made…..
Brings the concept to completion…Good job..!
Thumbs UP!!
I believe Obama will declare the NYT, "too big (a source for propoganda) to fail"…
Do you know if they're unionizied??

No movies, no TV. I use a DVD player for instruction videos once in a while. I get bored half way through the credits on movies, pull the DVD, and pick up a book.
Great news.
Can't imagine what McC thought he was going to accomplish.
I know people today who still cannot stand to even hear her name.
Seems strange to me that Yon is banished, McChrystal goes down within a week or so?
Probably just coincidence.
[...] Logan confirmed it on CNN’s “Reliable Sources” over the weekend and Briebart’s site has an essay on the virtues of stenography for access today by no less a figure than Jeb Babbin – a deputy undersecretary of defense in the George H. W. Bush administration and “designated guest host of Oliver North’s ‘Common Sense Radio’” as well as a columnist for the Washington Times, American Spectator and other rightwing echoes. He knows the way to keep the establishment happy. [...]
Hummm….
Love to know the back story on Yon and McCrystal but we won't get it from Yon so we'll have to wait for McCrystal's memoirs if he cares to share, which he probably won't. Anyway I'm SOOOO GLAD MICHAEL IS BACK! He's not only the straightest shooter IN Afghanistan, he's the ONLY STRAIGHT SHOOTER, IMO…..hands down.
Not that any of that or Petraeus will be able to fix this mess. Obama cares not a whit about this war. Just wants to keep the few military voters out there who have been in a cave since 2008.
Meatgrinder redux.
I honestly wonder after reading this whether Jeb Babbin is mentally ill. What planet does he (and most of the commentators here) live on? So telling the truth as Michael Hasting did about Stanley McChrystal is some evil, despicable act thought hatched by the Satanic pro-Obama media, that horrible "socialist" who supports Wall St., Mr. Bush 43's wars & secret prisons, etc.? It boggles the mind. One thinks back to the law — of free speech — before the trial of John Peter Zenger, were the truth was no defense against criminal libel for criticizing a public official. You hard right-wingers are such phonies, talking about the defense of the constitution you use as toilet paper!
Weaving a false narrative through selective use of quotations made off the record, and potentially wounding the effort to stabilize and strengthen a democratic Afghanistan is enough of a douchebag offense. Hastings broke confidence with the men who were giving him an incredible amount of access into the inner circle of this nation's wartime command structure.
Your trolling is weak and downright nonsensical, get lost.
THe question is not whether the media is biased. It is widely accepted that it is. The problem is what can we do about it?
When I was Company Commander, with memories of the media coverage of Vietnam fresh in my mind, I had an unwritten "special order." understood from Private on up. Should my unit be engaged in combat and Dan Rather (or any other member of the media) came up to report on the action, they were to become casualties.
History is unkind to journalists as well. We have learned of late that the Voice of America, Walter Cronkite took it upon himself to declare the VietNam war a loss. We learned from North VietNam generals that after the Tet Offensive they were beaten, ready to give up, but then Walter Cronkite gave them new life and purpose, the press had become the "useful idiots" that communists have always counted on. Journalists prior to being required to hold University Degrees were considered "blue collar" workers like the rest of those who published the news paper in the printing rooms, now journalists are products of brainwashed idealism regarding making an impact on the world rather than reporting what is happening. The real press died decades ago, we now have propogandists.
I still have not heard exactly how or why this know sniper of a journalist was let in the gate? Who arranged it, Who promoted it, What was the perceived benefits,
I have heard many opinions and a lot of speculation but i am dying for facts. We have a left suddenly in a tizzy about the wonderful "New" General, who takes over his duties at central command?
Was this the plan all along to disgrace a general through the words of his underlings. Obama would have looked weak firing him for stategy that he had endorsed or for the growing body count that Obama's election night battle plan of taking it to Pakistan resulted in. Now Mc Crystal is gone whatever he says comes from a "disgraced" general. Obama is free to rewrite the battle plan with a new general to blame if it goes bad. Rules of engagement, tactics, drone strikes, COIN, Oh yeah and lets not forget DOJ's involvement all are on the table now and OBO's hands are clean.
Chance do you remember the halciyon days of transactional analysis?

First, do not confuse guerrilla warfare and counterinsurgency operations. Second, the very essence of counterinsurgency is countering the ideology of the insurgents and making the people less likely to adopt the insurgent ideology. How does trying to make pals of the reporter do that? The reporter also has an editor or editors that he reports to regularly. How do you make the editor friendly to the friendly reports?
To use your metaphor. The MSM and the military are both out to win the hearts and minds of the American public on the mission of the war. Is that a legitimate activity for the military to undertake? Or, should the military look for allies in the media who will undertake that task for them and then support the ally as much as possible? Either way, the whole concept of an apolitical military is gone.
