For years, the New York Times’s Maureen Dowd and Frank Rich have played the same journalistic card trick: Take the hot button issue of the week, cross it with the latest pop culture reference and – voila! – Times readers are treated to columns that give the appearance of having some kind of deep-seated cultural insight.

The problem, however, is that their “insights” won’t stand up to any kind of serious analysis, and quickly reveal themselves to be shallow, glib, sophomoric, and perhaps worst of all, predictable.
(Several weeks ago, for example, Rich struggled to make the claim that the George Clooney film Up in the Air is the Grapes of Wrath for our times – which sounds pretty good, until one thinks about it for a moment: The film is about a guy who travels the country racking up frequent flier miles as he fires people; Steinbeck’s masterpiece is about the struggles of the Joads as they’ve lost their farm and their livelihoods, and set out for California, penniless. But such is what passes for insight at the Times – where the upper westsider who’s been forced to fire a maid is seen as the tragic victim in need of sympathy, rather than the out-of-work maid.)
The former “Butcher of Broadway”
In any case, this week’s award for the vapid pop cultural reference masquerading as insight goes to Ms. Dowd, for her New Years’ eve interview with Janet Napolitano, wherein she posed the following Big Question, which manages to be both frightfully naïve, yet ever so trendy at the same time:
Why is it so hard for those charged with keeping us safe to be as imaginative and innovative as filmmakers like James Cameron?
Aw, shucks. When did The New York Times start sounding like Tiger Beat magazine?

Huh?
LOL, Dowd, What a moron!
Maureen Dowd writes like a high school girl who just got her own column in the school newspaper. The attempts at cleverness are wince-inducing. Come to think of it, you can say the same thing about Frank Rich.
Dowd & Rich are political-entertainers, nothing more. Dowd used to entertain me on occasion when she was going after the Clintons in the late 90s. Rich seems to be a bitter old man trying to eke out some meaning in his waning years. I extend my compassion to both, hoping they find the internal peace they're looking for.
Moron isn't strong enough to describe her!
Is Dowd or Rich necessary ?
Nah, not even useful.
She always brings me down, but her name is "Dowd." Please fix your headline!
Any broadside aimed at Molly Dowd is a good one. She and all the other Leftist media hacks probably feign indifference at this web site, but you just know they're seething with rage…which, for the past year and for the next three, will be their M.O.
Necessary? Maybe for a garbage disposal.
Why the confusion? The white male must lose his identity to redeem himself morally. All cultures are equal, except Western culture which is uniquely evil because of its exploitation of the Earth’s resources and oppression of the romanticized, Rousseauian ‘noble savage’. The individualism and egoism inherent in the philosophy of the so called ‘enlightened’ West, must be abrogated by the selfless pursuit of the collect good. Of course, the truly ‘enlightened’ spiritual and societal elite of our new social contract will be exempt from this prescription. It’s much too important that they be allowed privileges that facilitate their ‘guidance’ of us, the unenlightened. Makes perfect sense! A great read is Stephen Hick’s Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault. I think he does a pretty good job of deconstruction this crap.
Dazzeled by stars and her own celebrity limelight. That is the problem with media, politics and entertainment. They are all cast from the same mold and all have the same goal. To be the 'star'.
Look, no one with common sense pays attention to them. I would not be surprised, given the economic problems with their media, that they will join the unemployment lines sooner rather than later.
Grapes of Wrath v. Up in the Air. Just replace the old truck with an airplane, the homeless camps with an airport and you have the same movie. I wish I could think like that…….Not.
I don't know why, but I'm always surprised that someone as ridiculous as Maureen Down can be employed. Then I remember it's the New York Times….
Maureen Dowd in a moment of self-depreciation:
" Celebrity distorts democracy by giving the rich, beautiful, and famous more authority than they deserve. "
Well, after Ms. Dowd asked the question, I'm sure Nappy raced back to her lair and put her thinking cap on and now has her staff working on a way to turn us all green and allow us to sprout our own wings.
These people are not adults. We NEED adults in the world right now. Only a very useless kind of person would take either of them seriously.
Wouldn't it have been fun if honest, intelligent person had been asked this question. What a meatball pitch to be slammed out of the ball field!
Appropriate Answer:
“Mr. Cameron’s story is fiction. This may come as a bit of a surprise to you, Ms Doud, but it truly is quite easy to be imaginative when you get to write whatever ending you choose solely because it pleases you. As much as you folks on the left may believe that is the way the real world works, in fact, that is not the way the real world works. Just ask the folks who took showers at Auschwitz.
“A better question would be: Just how profoundly stupid and delusional do you have to be to ask such an incredibly ignorant question? Just how profoundly disconnected from reality are you and your readers?”
I'm sure I would agree with your assessment, it's just I refuse to waste the precious moments of my life on such drivel.
If some one is so far over the cliff, it's a waste of time. They can't be saved, so I move on to the modern liberals who can be salvaged.
Agreed, they're just making a buck playing along with the absurd political theater.
Imbecile?
Agreed. Modern liberals are usually obsessed with their image, they want to be seen as cool and hip. Anything that interferes with that infuriates them.
Which is exactly why I love doing it.
I don't know about that, they may hang on till the repo guys have to beat her fingers with a hammer to clean out her office when the Times finally goes under.
If you think about it, about the only people still reading the Times are fans of these types.
Interesting coincidence I got a letter from the Time today. I assume they're begging me to subscribe, but I don't know because I'm not wasting my time to even open it. Right into the recycle bin.
Thanks for the info and your service to your readers.
By reading these to ass clowns, you save all the rest of us from the pain and suffering of having to do it ourselves.
I salute you!
Why is it so hard for those charged with keeping us safe to be as imaginative and innovative as filmmakers like James Cameron?
In other words…Why can't the Gov. make sh*t up like Cameron?
Is that the question?
I could not say it better. Her writing reminds me of a reading teen-angst poetry written by a high-school girl who has just discovered a thesaurus.
do a story on Peggy Noonan…throw in Brooks…they joined Dowds team and didn't call a presser
I hope I live long enough to see Dowd turn into Helen Thomas
Maureen Dowd hasn't been relevant since she posed for the erotic photos on the steps. Peggy Noonan is a carbon copy…………
Why is it so hard for those charged with keeping us safe to be as imaginative and innovative as filmmakers like James Cameron?
Cameron hasn't been that imaginative lately, and we're not really being kept safe, so…
Ah- heck with it- it's a stupid question posed by an unimaginative, boring person.
A better question posed to Big Sis would have been, "How do you compare DHS to the protagonist in "The Cat In The Hat"?
Maureen who?
I agree, Frank Rich DOES write like a high school girl, and a fat ugly high school girl at that!
Thats the real pitch going on here…. Maureen is not seeking to be smart herself, but only to serve up softballs to the left. So that the readers then go… oh, wow… see how smart Mr. or Mrs. so and so is. They "knocked it out of the park."
Notice that such witless questions are not asked of Conservatives.
Lefties love Dowd and Rich because they think they're witty and they reaffirm their previously held world views. But alas! There weren't enough of these lefties who'd thought it was worthwhile to pay the NYTimes' fee of two years ago when they'd made their stable of exclusive columnists an exclusive commodity for those paying the fee. So the Gray Lady had to crawl back to the public and admit their failure and put Dowd and Rich back into general circulation.
The NYTimes tried to charge extra. It didn't work because their writers are vapid.
This Up In The Air vs. Grapes of Wrath comparison is silly stuff. Whatever happened to critical thinking at the Times? Arguments of sophistry pop up everywhere these days ,it is an epidemic ,which kills brain cells. Don't Dowd and Rich know how goofy their views sound?
I think Dowd has a point. Why haven't we considered the possibility of attacks by giant blue aliens??
Thanks to Boot… part 2..
I remember over a decade ago when a friend(blooming intellectual doc techie) suggested I get a subscription to NYT, to stay in touch with world opinion and get "different" perspectives. What I read in NYT was like a cheap grade BBQ, or as marketed… Salsa made in NYC? The work stank of self-edification, glorifying selfish dimwits, each fawning over the other. Whatever knowledge they gained at Ivy league schools was sloshed down a New York drain pipe, leaving only murky Steam to rise the next morning. Or, maybe I am wrong and the professors did their jobs well, indoctrinating an entire generation of fools.
I could not discern which was the case, but knew that I did not want to pay for the babble of broadway.
Thanks to Boot…. part 3 ending…
All the best to Jake Boot, Michael and Big Journalism…. when you're not two-stepping through the fanfare of Le Miserable manure on 42nd and Broad, come on down to Texas sometime… we'll show you a real BBQ, real boots, silent wisdom and good folk kicking up their heels.
The kind that don't complain when a Hurricane hits, that pull together without a fairy BigGovMother and refuse to make a broadway production of it. Today, thats called stupid by the left. Down here, We the People, call it Independence.
AHHHH, you got it first…
They have their uses, but fodder for ridicule is as useful as they will ever get.
Now imagine if James Cameron WAS DHS. The Americans would all be dead and anyone who happened to remain would be forced into blue suits and made to ride horses. Scrap that. Too cruel to the horses. The neo-Navi would have to hoof it.
Name one.
LOL, I always get tickled when Maureen casually tosses out a Shakespeare reference to impress her readers because I know she has a copy of Shakespeare For Dummies right beside her.
Jake Boot asks "Aw, shucks. When did The New York Times start sounding like Tiger Beat magazine?" Answer: 25 years ago.
You're getting warm…
I applaud your compassion but hope that they both die unnoticed- certainly unlamented.
I will guarantee that both these self-important divas google themselves twice a day.
Yes, but the libturds are doing that already. Problem is, it always comes with a tax increase and an assault on Liberty.
NO.
Of course they are seething – after all, a woman whose life is a series of one night stands cannot help being bitter.
I would like to write a book titled, "Is Maureen Dowd Necessary? Hell No! Why Dowd's Opinions Suck Hardcore". I would dedicate the book to her!
The real question — is Maureen Dowd necessary?

This post was mentioned on Twitter by suzannes912er: Maureen Dowd/Frank Rich Deep Thought of the Week http://is.gd/5RQvM...
Cameron is a talented technologist, nothing more. His films always feature the newest techno crap with a sophomoric take on young love. He is a talented 17 yr old boy with unlimited resources. Granted, some of his movies are a lotta fun: Terminator, Aliens, Abyss. The rest, including Titanic are pure, unadulterated crap.
Please see "Bo Obama;s" piece from yesterday.
Well, seeing as James Cameron is a plagiarist hack who says one thing and means another…how is government doing anything different at the moment?
At least Tiger Beat used to be entertaining…
Columnists for a dying newspaper. . .they will most likely become increasingly acerbic and outlandish to gain attention. . .yawn!
A 13 year old would find Dowd and Rich too childish.
And Sean Penn into Ezra Pound.
Dowd and Rich are bitter, aging harpies.
You know the old saying, politics is Hollywood for ugly people.
You mean Frank writes like a high school girl? I thought he was more like junior high school.
'Suicide Red'-haired Dowdy Mo- too old to be that precocious and Rich- well, hardly.
(btw- which one's the dame again?)
Old hats way past their prime and nobody can snap those brims back to life.
Congrats AB- love your work.
Thanks to Boot and others Part 1…
Thanks to Jake Boot… for sweeping away the fodder of so-called journalism hoysted upon the public by NYT. Please keep serving up reviews of such fools, served on platters of hot or cold hypocrisy. Fresh meat on the spit, rare and choice selections. Maureen and Rich are spit worthy. Roasting the rotting corpse of old and new media clicks at Moscow on the Hudson is a truly just endeavor to be executed. Pravda!
But it can!!
I just want to put in my two cents worth over the choice of your moniker Jakob Boot & Ace In The Hole. I understand it and I love it. Jacob Boot as an honest small town newspaper publisher whose misfortune it was to hire the most unscrupulous of reporters. For those who don't know, it's in reference to an old movie by Billy Wilder with Kirk Douglas in the role of that reporter. As a reporter, he is only looking out for himself and any story he can use that will jump start his career. He's ruthless with everyone who stood in way of telling a story ONLY his way. Mmmm…Does that sound familiar?
If you've never seen or heard of it, it's one of those movies that has a real punch in the gut and is a fine addition to any personal film library. One of the BEST!!
Yeah, if you are 13 years old.
Yes, she deserves the award. Only when you deeply consider her comment do you realize how profound it was.
Ya, that was a big old fastball right down the middle…
I find Ms.Dowd very immature and predictable. She often seems irrational, possibly inebriated ,or just plain nasty. Maybe that passes on the left for clever, but not to me.
Up in the Air: the Grapes of Wrath of our times? The answer isn't up in the air. I suppose the suggestion is good if you want something to get you to do exercises like roll your eyes, cross your eyes, snort.

Agreed! Dowd is the left's Malkin!
Fantastic web page, I just came across it and I’m already a fan. I just shed thirty pounds in 30 days, and I am excited to share my weight loss success with as many people as possible. If I can lose the weight then any one can. Whatever you do, never quit and you WILL attain all your weight loss objectives!
