Claude Brodesser-Akner has a column in New York Magazine’s new culture blog (Vulture) recently in which he sounds a warning, in hushed conspiratorial tones, about an effort underway by Hollywood to use Evangelical/Christian organizations to spread the word of their faith-based films to Christian audiences.
Dear God, say it ain’t so!!!!

Full disclosure, I am not an Evangelical… I haven’t even been inside a church for any reason other than to attend a wedding or funeral in some 20 years… but I’m just not sure what the big scoop is here. Brodesser-Akner seems to have discovered a vast conspiracy to… well let’s take the case of The Passion of the Christ.
It seems that in order to effectively sell the movie to Christian audiences, Mel Gibson approached Christian groups and churches and then released exclusive footage to them. Those organizations in turn then showed the footage to their congregations, along with a friendly credit at the end advertising the church that brought them the footage.
Wow… that’s diabolical!!!

But has Brodesser-Akner really stumbled on a brand new phenomenon? How exactly is what Mel Gibson did in marketing The Passion any different than what Brett Ratner or Chris Nolan or any of a hundred other “fanboy” directors do when they release exclusive footage to Harry Knowles at Aint It Cool?
You know, every time Michael Moore puts out a new movie he takes it on tour across America’s college campuses hoping that the overwhelmingly left-leaning student bodies who see the film will take news of Moore’s latest work and evangelize about it across the fruited plain. It’s no different than what Brodesser-Akner is talking about with regard to faith-based marketing. No different. And frankly, you’d expect that Brodesser-Akner would want to at least give Moore credit for thinking of it first.

Except Moore didn’t think of it first, did he?
Hell, The Passion wasn’t even the first time Mel Gibson did something like this. Way back in 1990, Mel made his version of Hamlet and marketed it in at least one very similar way. In conjunction with the movie, Mel released a special companion piece which aired on HBO. It was Mel in a high school classroom, showing the movie to teenage kids, and then acting out scenes from the movie with them to get them excited about the idea of Shakespeare. It was a masterstroke of marketing genius… and there was nothing insidious about it. It was just a marketing strategy.

But the implication in this piece is that we should keep a particularly close eye on what the Christians are up to because… well I’m not sure why, exactly.
And what about the suggestion that somehow David Cunningham, the director of In The Beginning, doesn’t deserve to direct this film because several historians declared that his previous film (The Path to 9/11) contained “flagrant falsehoods.” Well gee, couldn’t you say the same thing about JFK, W., Nixon, Gladiator, Fahrenheit 911, Sicko, Frost/Nixon, Thirteen Days, The Hurricane, From Hell, The Alamo and about a million other “based on a true story” Hollywood movies? Is Brodesser-Akner saying that Oliver Stone, Ridley Scott, Michael Moore, Ron Howard, Norman Jewison, the Hughes Brothers, and John Lee Hancock (or John Wayne if you prefer) should all be banned from the movie business?
And so what if Cunningham is connected to the Evangelical community? Spike Lee directed the Malcolm X movie… don’t you think African-American audiences were more interested in seeing Spike’s version of the life story of a great African-American civil rights leader than they would have been if, say, Woody Allen had directed it? Take a look at the grosses for Get Rich Or Die Trying for an example of how audiences react when an old white guy directs a movie about a young African-American hip hop artist.
Hiring directors who know, believe in, and are connected to their subject matter isn’t a new phenomenon. It’s just smart business.
And as for the implication that Cunningham should not have been offered a movie because a previous film he directed was a failure at the box office… well, surely no director has ever produced a flop and then been given a chance to direct again!? (Hint: the director of The Nativity Story, who appears in Brodesser-Akner’s column, would never have gotten a crack at Twilight under those rules).
Look, I don’t care if Brodesser-Akner wants to take shots at this or that director, or this or that marketing campaign, that is certainly his right… but this is a thinly veiled attempt to make something that is perfectly normal seem creepy simply because Christians are involved, and so I am going to exercise my right not to take this piece very seriously.
Hollywood is using Christians to market Christian-themed movies? How about this for a future column topic idea… “Water Wet; Sky Blue.”

Connect the dots people! Christians marketing films to Christians…can book burnings and concentration camps be far behind? Will we be living out the dystopian future of The Handmaid's Tale?
Crank up the ACLU lawyers and start suing people for….uh….we'll think of something!
Well of course, he's suspicious. Christianity is the orginal root of all evil. Don'tcha know?
/sarc
Seriously, it's nothing less than expected. There will be increasing falling away from the faith and persecution of those who profess it as time goes on. And I'm no Evangelical either.
Last year, I saw a movie with Gavin MacLeod called "The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry". Now, where did I hear about it?
Roger Ebert?
Richard Roeper?
Huffington Post?
Helping a Church in town distribute food to needy families? CORRECT.
As long as Christian themed movies are made it will only be word of mouth. If Ebert, Roeper or Huff Poo got wind of a Christian movie they would rip it to shreds.
I don't believe that the left really cares that faith based films are marketed to a Christian audience. They're really aghast that anyone is allowed to make a faith based film in the first place, and secondly that they do so well. It goes against everything liberals believe in. To them, Christians are the villains, not people of character, integrity, or generosity.
If I were looking to buy a new Bible I would not drive to my local tire store. I don't smoke so I don't hang out in Cigar Bars.
Christianity is at the top of their hit list. All that hate speech rhetoric and personal accountability stuff and all, just can't be tolerated. Pretty soon we won’t be able to advertise in newspapers or magazines or even TV because like smoking ads it could influence young, impressionable children…. and we just can’t have that now can we?
"Hollywood is using Christians to market Christian-themed movies?"
This gives me the right to be outraged at BET using black people to market their channel, right?
wasn't it the same thing with christian rock? once someone noticed there was a market everyone rushed through the door. i would expect hollywood will do the same, in 3-D.
An apt title "Vulture" for a new culture column blog in progressive/socialist leftist 'New York' magazine…
…to the carrions of the hateful Left anything alive, vibrant, and uplifting like Faith in a Loving God is distasteful…
…no, they thrive by picking and licking the dry bones and diseased, desiccated entrails of the utopian dreams of dead (and living) Marxist dictators…
I'm not shocked or even surprised, the left has been demonizing Christians for some time now. Part of their Alinsky tactics they're using to destroy the moral fiber of the Country.
The horror……
They can 'demonize Christians' all they want and they already do in some circles. The Christians I know and that I am, will lay down their life for their Lord and Master, Jesus Christ.
Can sexy senoritas sell me 'Tide' on Sabado Gigante ?….Si Se Puede !
If Cecil B. DeMille were making "The Ten Commandments" today, how would he market the picture? Wait a minute, I take that back, Cecil B. DeMille would never be allowed to make The Ten Commandments today.
"All men will hate you because of Me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved." – Jesus speaking to the Disciples, Matthew 10: 22
Thank You FamousDrScanlon, that is scripture I should have included.
You're very welcome, Sheryl, thank you and God Bless you for your public witness…
…and always remember one of the great gifts we Believers have – we've read The Book and we KNOW the GOOD GUYS win… ; )
Excellent take on this Spliff
The Ten Commandments would be considered Christian propaganda, as compared to Mr. Gorebull warmings documentry or Mr. Moore's list of documentries.
Well, they might let C.B.D. make "The Ten Commandments" today, but, of course the studio would insist the Egyptians and Israelites reverse roles, with Moses morphing into 'Mahmoud' messenger of Allah…
Christians sharing information and networking…whoodathunk! Good for them. Check out David Barton's website: http://www.wallbuilders.com/
This guy is great! We need more like him and we need to listen to him and share this information.

'dong' – replace ' Jewish folks ' with ' atheists ' and your posting will more more honest and less ignorant…
I hear there are two "blockbuster" summer Da'wa movies coming out this summer, both full of lies and omissions, both praising the genuis and wonderfulness of Islam and it's horrendous founder.
I wonder if there are any Muslim outreach (*da'wa) organizations associated with the making and/or marketing of these films, and whether the MSM will notice when they begin making public school kids watch them.
Yas massa.
Sure he would be able to make it – so long as it highlighted how the Egyptians were wronged by losing out on their cheap immigrant labour. Not to mention how those hooligans destroyed Jericho.
And, of course, their version of the ACLU would be on hand when Moses delivered the Commandments to scream about seperation of church and state and how intolerant God is.
Is that Yiddish you're speaking, or Moron ?
Well, some of us Christians out here realize that marketing things to us, is just to well um.. make money. We are not all interested in that. And btw AreaMan66, true Christians (not Catholics or Nazis) NEVER advocated for the burning of books. Only Maoists and Marxists enjoy the smoke of burnt BIBLES. We end up usually dying for owning one. God bless!

While I appreciate you bringing this article to our attention, Jake, I have to say I didn't find in it the attitudes that you found. I read the piece and saw someone discussing attempts to repeat the success of The Passion in marketing new films to Christian audiences while avoiding the financial failures of poorly made movies. Yes, the article is written rather differently than I would write it, but I attribute that difference to the author's need to explain more to an audience unfamiliar with Evangelical Christianity; as an Evangelical, I didn't find the tone offensive or off-putting.
I'm glad to see that directors are recognizing that all viewers, Christian or otherwise, want good stories first. When movies with Christian/biblical values tell compelling stories with good acting, how they are marketed won't be an issue.
I know…I was just trying to be sarcastic.
BTW what's with the Catholics or Nazis? I didn't know they were related or shared an affinity for book burning.
Are you talking original sin? Seriously, false profits will become abundant. Think Al, Barry, Jimmy…
What's interesting about this is that the folks producing the Christian-based movies are getting the last laugh, financially anyway.
When I read this commentary, I immediately thought of the movie "Fireproof." The film was a story about a troubled firefighter and his wife struggling through a rocky marriage. With the help of family and friends, along with a spiritual program called "The Love Dare," the couple found a way to work on their troubles.
The film was made in Georgia by a few guys who were pastors at a rural church. Many of the cast were members of the congregation who volunteered their parts. The star of the film was former teen TV actor Kirk Cameron. The film cost about $500K to produce, practically nothing by today's standards.
The theatrical and DVD gross were in the millions: $33 million at the box office, and $28 million in DVD sales last year. "Fireproof" was the biggest independent film of 2008, and did it with very little promotion. It's popularity relied almost totally on word-of-mouth after viewing in churches around the country.
The movie has since spawned a famous best-selling book based on the "Love Dare" program referenced in the movie, which assists couples in repairing damaged relationships.
Of course, what the critics found difficult to deal with was that the film (and the later marriage book) were based on belief in God and in seeking His guidance and wisdom when dealing with the travails of life. This is something they will never seem to be able to grasp. And they do so at their own peril, I fear.
And that's why two lesbians are upset a Roman Catholic school does not want their child enrolled, that should be a start to a joke, but it's reality. In this time of tolerance why should an established faith change it's established belief because it is not politically correct to a culture of an elitist group that is loud and squeeky.
Shocking! This just in, some Christians are still capitalists! When the Obama appeared, we thought we had gotten them all to convert to socialism with our "social justice" schtick.
Perhaps he's like me. I left church because my church left me. Over time, the Christian values I was raised to believe in have changed. Christ is now the Lord of endless love and foregiveness without any of the consequences. That's not my lord. My Lord is the Lord of infinite love, but he is also a Lord that will judge me when my time is up.
What a great post, Joe. You know, I saw that someone voted "thumbs down" to your post, down to 0. I simply cannot imagine why anyone, however Liberal they might be, could give it a thumbs down. Other than, of course, being infected by Hate.
It would be confusing, 'Cardi', if the leftists were using logic and reason – they are not…
…they are relying on their belief in their own superiority and 'good intentions'…
…progressive/socialists believe in " Human Evolution " and that humans are progressing toward Perfection and Heaven on Earth (Utopia)…
…they believe they are higher-evolved than those of us stuck in superstitions like faith in God, and they believe we are ignorant, backward, and a hindrance to the March to Human Perfection…
…so, they feel free to mock us, insult us, ignore us if they can, but most importantly, to control us politically…
…yes, they claim superiority because they are so "tolerant", yet, they are the most intolerant of all human beings, and their consciences are clear, because they are convinced of their "moral superiority"…
…and, after all, they are 'perfecting society' for our own good, and if we can't appreciate how great they are, we must be seriously deranged, is how they see us…
….Liberalism/Progressivism/Socialism/Communism is indeed an Evil Madness…
Wow, reading "Hollywood’s New Plan to Lure in the Christian Audience: The Bible As 3-D Blockbuster," it strikes me that the author totally doesn't "get it" with regard to Mel Gibson's marketing and the value of Cunningham's connection to Youth With a Mission.
Mel Gibson didn't just show clips to churches to promote the movie, he actively sought feedback from the churchgoers, preachers, deacons, Sunday school teachers and so on. He showed that he really, truly wanted to make the movie into something that was a moving, important Christian experience. I truly believe that if he'd never made a dime but made the movie exactly the same way, he would have been satisfied.
Cunningham is well-placed to do exactly the same thing. He can tweak and tune the movie into exactly what Christians want to see in a Christian movie, but he needs to do in not for the money, but because it truly fills a need in the Church. Of course, if the movie truly fills a need in the Church and speaks to us as Christians, well OF COURSE it will make money hand-over-fist.
Amen!
One word: Conviction
"We bought [Fall From Grace] because of the story. We knew we’d get that evangelical audience, too, but we bought it for the story"
This is exactly the attitude that has made flops out of Hollywood's efforts at Christian films. "We knew we'd get that evangelical audience" is an insult. We are not simpletons dying to spend our money on anything that is marketed as Christian.
Look at the success of Fireproof, The Passion, Facing the Giants and so on — financially immense compared to the cost of making them, but more of a success in that they were occasions where we could sit down in a theater and feel the Holy Spirit around us, instead of that spirit we feel when watching Hollywood movies.
They just are utterly incapable of getting it, aren't they?
The last "faith based movie" I saw was "The Stoning of Soraya M". It was pretty disgusting. Oh, right, wasn't Christian.
Never mind……..
It is human nature to seek God. Liberals have allowed progressives* to push God out of their lives and that in turn has left an empty spot. Attempting to fill that emptiness is what leads good people to follow what seem to be well meaning causes such as "Global Warming" or "Hope and Change."
When these causes are exposed as frauds, it leaves the liberals in despair and disarray as day after day they witness their progressive* heroes twist and turn as their lies become more and more bizarre. Even then, in their depression, they turn to alcohol, drugs, immoral behavior and all the other vices of man.
The answer is simple, continue your search for God, he has not abandoned you, he is waiting for you. Even more important, save your children. Don't let those impressionable young minds follow the progressive* frauds down the same path. YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN DANGER! AMERICA IS IN DANGER!
*progressive: I am elite and smart, you are stupid, therefore I will be your master

I left church because my church left me.
Pretty much the same story here. In fact, I lay a lot of blame for America's problems squarely at the feet of the Church. The culture changed her rather than her salting the culture. Just like our schools, the Church got lazy and quit teaching the foundations (i.e., doctrine). Religion became based on emotions, not spiritual truths. Then we knew WHAT we believed (because the "expert" told us what to believe) but didn't know WHY we believed. As the Church became anemic, she was no longer a light to the culture but became swallowed up by it instead.
Praise God for a resurgence of Reformational Christianity — the very ideas that gave birth to ideas of liberty in the civil sphere. Read Martin Luther's On Secular Authority or Calvin's< Institutes. They were the seed ideas for Samuel Rutherford (Lex Rex), Locke and our Founding Fathers. All told in Never Before in History by Amos and Gardiner.
God used my study of history in preparation to homeschool to draw me to Himself. When I began reading the Bible on my own it came alive.
The reason why the leftists are afraid is one of a spiritual nature:
For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. -Eph 6:12
Just one point of order, here: "the Church" refers to the body of Christ on earth. This is distinct from "the church" on the corner. As Paul said, He is the vine, and we the branches. Christians should be quite careful when speaking about the Church as a whole, because we are speaking about both ourselves as members, and Christ as the head. Obviously, any problems in the Church are not caused by Christ!
I agree that a lot of the blame for America's problems lies at the feet of the "Church in America" as I prefer to call it. I think that the letter to the Church at Laodicea could have been written to us in the US:
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold–I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realise that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Revelations Rev 3:15-18.
Atheism is a neccessary component of socialism which is the step toward communism.
The "Enviromentalism Green Movement" is THE approved "religion" of socialists/communists.
That's why the "Cap & Trade" garbage is next for Obammunist & Liberal/"Progressive" Co.
The could be the "End of Days" – if we continue to allow it to happen.
For all its absurdity, this story discusses something rather eerie. Sinister, even.
Not content to keep Christians from discussing their faith in public (Brit Hume, anyone?), progressives are now equally outraged that Christians discuss Jesus amongst themselves.
DA … MSM your bigotry is showing!
I stand corrected. Yes, "Church in America" is a more fitting term. The Church is the true believers, not necessarily those who call themselves such.
Check out Time Changer. It didn't get much publicity, even less than Fireproof, Facing Giants, and Flywheel. Time Changer is a commentary on today — what happens when we put forth ideas of morality without connecting it to the Source.
I think it would be even MORE correct to define Hollywood reptilia as secularists. But it is foolish to ignore the very large presence of famous folk like Spielberg, etc. who may or may not be orthodox in their religious beliefs. David Horowitz has noticed, too, that the leftists he knew in the 60s, were mostly from Jewish families, ones who had walked out of their synagogues.
If I were Jewish, I would be more cautious about loudly sneering at Christians and Christianity, and in particular, at very observant Christians, since it is this group that is most likely to support Jews when the going gets rough, as it definitely is, what with the burgeoning Caliphate.
One of my secularist relatives (married to a secular Jew) was aghast when I pointed out the true fact that Abolition of Slavery has ALWAYS been spearheaded by Christians.
It was a great post, Ultra. But maybe it was fear that caused the thumbs down vote. Fear and hate are pretty close companions. I voted thumbs up btw.
Everything is laughable . what you see today is not REAL christian very few do you see REAL christians. What cracks me up is everybody gets upset over something that is TOTAL APOSTATE.
I can't see Hollywood doing the Christian thing , Hollywood lives on a diet of whores , dope , noise and mayhem. It's packed with Jewish folks who quiver at the thought of Christians . Well perhaps they might play up the whore , blood sacrifice , incest and perpetual war thing , that's very Biblical , but I can't see Christians I know going to see it with the kids. Then again who knows , the corruption runs deep these days. And in those days too. We aren't far from the ROMANESQUE anyhow , lions and the faithful chucked in pens for a quick blood letting. Now that would sell.
It's become a knee-jerk response when progressives hear the word "Christian." They start to froth at the mouth as they reel off things that Christians have supposedly done – in the next breath, they're railing about all the crime and corruption and greed in the world – it must be really confusing to be a leftist!
Jake, I hope that doing the research on this article (and perhaps reading the comments you've inspired) will inspire you to drop by a church Sunday, if not sooner. The one you pick (or that is picked FOR you, without your knowing) will be a great place to start. It's never too late to come to Jesus.
I'm serious, brother! I avoided church and was hell bent, hell bound and hell deserving for over two decades. If I can overcome my sordid past and "get right with the Man," you can too!
OBAMA SUPPORTS CHILD ABUSE !
Obama is pro-choice. His party is No. 1 in choosing fast death (by abortion) and slow death (by AIDS). But Obama wouldn't choose this slogan: "Unborn children should have the same right to be born alive that abortionists had!"
And he'd never want folks to Google "Zombietime" and click on "Up Your Alley Fair." (This is Nancy Pelosi's district, and San Francisco mayor Newsom told the cops to NOT arrest anyone exercising the kinky, child-abusing "rights" Obama approves of which are flaunted by totally naked sodomites on public streets in front of children!)
After recovering from the uncensored photos, Yahoo "God to Same-Sexers: Hurry Up" (even Jesus told Judas to hurry up – John 13:27) and "Dangerous Radicals of the Religious Right." See all of this before the "God" named in all 50 US state constitutions exercises His rights and responds with earthquakes, violent storms, and other bad news.
Obama, Pelosi, and their public-porn-protecting collaborators don't want anyone to know what really goes on at those "gay" festivals because the shocking details could ignite and unite the Religious Right like nothing else – which explains why nothing was said about "gay" rights at any of the US Presidential debates!
Incredibly, the unnatural acts which forced God to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah (resulting in the Dead Sea Green Party's sudden change of plans!), and which were capital crimes (along with murder) in early America, are now fulfilling the "days of Lot" (Luke 17) Jesus said would happen JUST BEFORE His return as the no-excuses-allowed Supreme Judge.
The same predicted endtime perversion is now being taught to elementary school youngsters as "natural" and even "desirable" by those who ignore Christ's statement that such child abusers should be "drowned in the depth of the sea" (Matt. 18:6)!
You might say that American leaders are now doing a lot to help fulfill the same "days of Lot" – thus doing a lot to help make the Bible even more believable!
Want some more jolts? Google or Yahoo "Obama Avoids Bible Verses," "Pretrib Rapture Dishonesty," and "David Letterman's Hate, Etc."
(Obama, Pelosi and other world-wreckers did NOT approve of this message!)
The last thing you are is a Christian. You are, however, full of puff and bile.

Great point — I actually bought Time Changer, loved it. Passed it on to a friend as well. Gotta say, it was not only very interesting, the acting was good, and the story line really makes you stop and think.
It's only a Christian movie if it promotes Christ, in my opinion.
I agree that the acting and storyline is superb. I wonder why it didn't get as much recognition (even in the Christian community) as the other three? It is circulating through my church right now and everyone has loved it.
Joe, check out Time Changer.
