Many have declared the dubious “Cap and Trade” scheme dead, so Obama went ahead and had the EPA suggest they were going to impose it under their own regulations. The truth is, they’re not likely to do that. They want the “Climate Bill” to pass because it’s designed to gouge the energy and manufacturing sector out of $646 billion in tax dollars over ten years. All to finance his crypto-socialist programs.
The Democrats see the climate bill as a cash cow, but Republicans aren’t buying it. So in his State of the Union address, the president didn’t mention cap and trade. He mentioned the “green jobs” that would be created by the “Climate bill.”
But to create more of these clean-energy jobs, we need more production, more efficiency, more incentives. And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country.

Doesn’t that sound swell? Except nuclear power plants are already safe and sound in the US and have been for over 50 years.
The 104 nuclear reactors in operation in 31 states provide only 20 percent of the nation’s electricity. But they are responsible for 70 percent of the power from pollution-free sources, including wind, solar and hydroelectric dams.
Nuclear power is only eclipsed by fossil fuels as a source of power as this chart reveals. But unlike fossil fuels, it’s a clean source of energy. And we’re evolving the technology to better and even safer versions.
The only real issue with nuclear power is nuclear waste. The plants themselves do not emit any significant radiation. You receive more exposure to radiation flying in a plane than you do if you lived next to a nuclear power plant. And the French, who embraced nuclear power far more than we have, developed excellent means of waste processing that we also use. The United States government spent $38 billion on the Yucca Mountain facility in Nevada, after years of environmental and feasibility studies.
But green ideologues and their political vassals like Harry Reid have finally managed to get the place killed, using specious arguments like, “What if an earthquake makes all the waste (stored hundreds of feet below the ground) come to the surface?
Aside from the absurdity of such an argument (that sized quake would make radioactive waste the lease of people’s concerns), the site is over 80 miles from Las Vegas, in a very desolate place in the desert. But now, as the Times on Line in Britain reports:
One of the most extraordinary engineering feats undertaken in postwar America is to lie unused inside a mountain unless someone thinks of a new purpose for it.
The Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, chosen by Congress in 1987 and opposed by environmentalists ever since, is to be shut before receiving a single barrel of spent fuel, thanks to a line in this week’s budget that eliminates federal funding for the project.
The move comes despite President Obama’s backing for new nuclear plants.
And if you think that’s not enough to show he’s not serious about nuclear power, Obama’s also scuttling Bush’s plan to recycle the reactor rods. We used to have a facility to do that, but President Jimmy Carter shut that down. He was another anti-nuclear ideologue. And despite myths to the contrary, Carter was never a nuclear engineer in the Navy.
If we had embraced nuclear power in the ’70s instead of trying to kill it off, a large part of our carbon output in the last three decades would have never happened. It’s the so called “greens” who are responsible for that. We wouldn’t have needed coal burning plants. We would have had plenty of energy to supply our cities instead of energy problems like the California shortages a few years back.

We certainly wouldn’t have needed the calls to cut back on our energy use that we’re seeing from this administration.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu has been criticized for his slow rollout of $18.5 billion in loan guarantees to spur investment in new nuclear power plants. But then, like Obama, Chu is a green ideologue with radical ideas not grounded in any science or rationality.
Obama’s push for nuclear power is just a ploy to try to get Republicans to vote for cap and trade. He knows a direct approach won’t work, but if he appeals to voters with the idea that the “Climate Bill” will provide new jobs, they might pressure their representatives to vote for it.
That’s as unlikely as Obama actually embracing nuclear power.

Nukes are such a no brainer for implementing "AltEnergy", that's why BBObama won't really do it….Just talk and doublespeak…
Obamao is worse than ignorant , he is dangerous.
The whole "green jobs/economy" rhetoric makes me crazy. Liberals will never learn that they cannot create a command and control economy. It fails Every. Single. Time. If there was a market or demand for green jobs and a green economy it would already exist. Capitalists are funny like that. If there is money to be made, they will make it.
Obama was on TV again this morning saying that whoever creates a green economy will lead the 21st century. You cannot "create" an economy or a market where no demand for one exists. Any attempt to make one will simply be a money pit. I mean, windmills? Really?
I'm no fan of O but quibbling about the phasing of "a new safe generation…." is silly.
His words about nuclear were about the only thing that I liked in the SOTU. But I don't really listen to him either. He promises everything to everyman everytime. He probably won't follow up.
Otherwise I agree with the article. Nuclear has produced safer power for fifty years than any other source. Even a hydro dam collapse from time to time kills more people.
Thanks to Harry Reid & Co., we have paid $38 billion for what now amounts to a hole in the ground. Harry's idea of a shovel ready project – a hole to fill up?
Obama, the candy man, suddenly spews forth "nuclear power and off-shore drilling" in such an obliquely pandering fashion that one might conclude the begining signs of tourettes syndrome is manifesting itself.
Obama says that we need nuke power plants, but the plans to recycle power rods and to use Yucca Mountain for radioactive waste both get shot down?
Excuse me?
France also recycles something like 90% of their waste into new fuel rods so their storage and containment facilities are very small compared to Yucca Mountain. How is it that the ultra-liberal French government is less opposed to nuclear energy than we are in the states? It's easily the best solution to both our power needs and the "global warming" farse.
SO NOW OBAMA WANTS NUKE PLANT?……………HA
IF SCOTT BROWN HADN'T WON IN MASSACHUETTS………
GUESS WHAT?……………YEAH……….
DEMOCRATS WOULD STILL BE JAMMING OBAMACARE, CAP AND TAX, AND OTHER IDIOTIC LEGISLATION DOWN YOUR THROAT OR UP ANOTHER PLACE…….
If DEMOCRATS call the Republicans the "Party of No"…….
THEN MAYBE THE DEMOCRATS SHOULD BE "THE PARTY OF KNOW IT ALLS"…….
AMERICANS NEED JOBS……BUT DEMOCRATS KNOW THAT THEIR OBAMACARE IS MORE IMPORTANT.
AMERICANS DON'T WANT OBAMACARE……BUT DEMOCRATS KNOW THAT WE HAVEN'T UNDERSTOOD HOW GREAT IT'LL BE.
AND ON AND ON.
BTW……..
CHECK OUT THE MOVIE………
IDIOCRAC
The green jobs aren't the real priority just yet for this administration. Obama's priority is filling all the Red jobs first.
Not surprising the "the Democrats see the climate bill as a cash cow." It's worked out pretty well for ALGORE. And, I saw Boone Pickens on Stossel's show, pretty much admitting that his "windmills, no natural gas" plans were designed to get public funding to increase his personal wealth. Of course, he didn't say that, you had to read between the lines. ("You'd need help.") How long has it been since we had really "free" markets?
I recall reading about smaller scale, fully contained nuclear reactors a few weeks ago. Does anyone have knowledge of these units- supposedly one could power several thousand homes with little or no maintenance and since they were fully enclosed, almost 100% safe from catastrophic melt-downs, etc., since they required such a small amount of fuel compare to full size reactors.
Tell odumblo he can run the nuke power system and he'll allocate trillions to it. He doesn't want americans to have anything that cannot be taxed to the extent that having it doesn't advance us but lowers us more toward third world. I mean why should we be cool and warm when third worlders live without screens on windows? We must rid ourselves of Obozo before its to late if aint already.
"It can only be so if deemed so by our glorious maximum leader, Chairman Bao. Hail to the Man/God in all his splendor and greatness, for He is all-powerful and worthy of our obsequiousness."

"Obama’s push for nuclear power is just a ploy to try to get Republicans to vote for cap and trade. He knows a direct approach won’t work, but if he appeals to voters with the idea that the “Climate Bill” will provide new jobs, they might pressure their representatives to vote for it."
This is the crux of his ploy to get the votes for cap and trade, but its pretty easy to see through his slight of hand. There is no way the greens, EPA (loaded with greens), or lefties will go for nukes. The left did an excellent job of painting nuclear powers as dangerous in the 80's and Three Mile Island and Chernobyl didn't help manners. Chernobyl was used it to put the nail in the coffin so to speak.
I am a proponent of nuclear energy, it is safe, clean, and practical especially with some of the technology that is coming forward. In the 80's I worked on the Hanford Reservation which had three nukes in construction mode. One plant was finished and two were scrubbed due to the political climate of fear. It is amazing to me just how easily influenced we are as a nation to be ruled by fear. It amazes me just how the more things change and the more they remain the same. Instead of fear of nuclear power plants, we have replace that fear with global warming.
The hope and dreams of all who worked on nuclear energy in the 70's and 80's was the advent of fusion, which is cleaner than fission. But when an industry is dissolved through fear and totally abandoned, the potential in advancements are lost. We may have already reached that point if we had been left alone. To me this just proves that the Green movement has no intentions of advancing us into a superior technological era, their dream for us is a third world culture….back to hunting and gathering. It is obvious after twelve months Obama is not interested in taking our country to greater achievements. Everything he has done has been the opposite of what he said he was going to do, besides the counterproductive strategies he and Congress have put in place. Nuclear energy is to positive of a move for our nation for him to really mean what he said.
Almost a no brainer…
What happens when union leader hacks – or "bargaining agents" (or as Obama likes to call them…stray cats and dogs) – make their way into the process?
China Syndrome meet Big Dig, Boston Style. Except the only thing reaching China won't be radioactivity but rather union extortion activity.
Some time about a year ago, I read a blog that had links to lawsuits going on against every form of powerplant construction, including wind, solar and wave. It is easy enough for the President to say he is for nuclear power when he knows to Greens will throw lawsuits against it until prospective builders give up.
When your electicity costs are fifty dollars a day, the Greens might consider discussing the possibility of a commission to study the feasibility of building nuclear power plants.
Oh, Dave I don't know exactly what you mean, but we already have 104 reactors operating now….How was that accomplished? Perhaps we could just follow the established pattern…Maybe get the Navy to consult….They have had a successful Nuke program for some 50 years…
Randy…Nukes …Not gonna happen……(Dana Carvey voice…)
Only pandering with doublespeak…
Bamster seems to have himself in a box…In order to do the correct thing on any issue he's flucked-up since he's been in office, he'd have to admit that conservative principles have merit….and again…Not gonna happen…Any time soon…
but but but what about T Boone Pickens and his windmills? obama campaigned on that….
I like solar power myself, not wind. You can't go wrong with the sun, because it's not going anywhere. Legislating it is something I can't get behind, but if installing equipment at a onetime fee eliminates my electric bill, so be it. The tech is getting much cheaper now and its a good investment. Plus, you end up selling surplus power back to the power company. BONUS!
We all remember how quickly after Obama took over he nixed the idea of tapping Alaska and some off-shore sites in the Gulf of Mexico. He is completely comfortable with the idea of funding the Saudi Wahabbist freakos and Commie madmen in Venezuela.
Odumbass has a split personality, two of which are Dumb and Dumber.
One design is called the Hyperion Power module. It's a 75-MW thermal or 25-MW electric unit. It sits underground for the life of the reactor, which is 10-20 years depending on output.
Recycling spent nuclear fuel rods is the only responsible way to handle this waste. The spent fuel rods would have to be transported through the area where my family and I live and work. I have heard numerous first hand accounts of train derailments in desert canyons near my rural hometown in southwest Utah, en route to southern Nevada. In addition to flash floods causing train derailments, the desert heat warps and distorts the rails, which is an ongoing rail safety issue. Transporting the waste on our highways is even less safe. There is no way that nuclear waste can be transported through our area safely.
When I was in grade school we would rise early to go outside and see the flash from the blast of the bombs being set off at the Nevada test site, then moments later we felt and heard the blast. I have lost many friends and relatives to cancers linked to the resulting radiation.
Perhaps the lives of those of us in the west are less important than the lives of those who live near nuclear power plants. That is the message that we have been getting from the beginning of the plans for storing nuclear waste at Yucca mountain. Recycling is really the only long term solution.
Is that the movie featuring a really COOL BLACK president who is a stupid thug that smiles alot cause he don't know WTF he's doing?? That IDIOT-OCRACY?
If we start building nuke plants doesn't that sort of make cap and trade null and void? Of course cap and trade has absolutely nothing to do saving the planet anyway.
Thanks for the link
how many yucca mountains would we need?
I think what Dave said has some truth to it, except maybe his comment on the China Syndrome. The plants built in the 80's were so large and long term in their construction, the unions were all over them. I would have to say the unions were an element that helped kill the industry. They drove the costs up with their ineptness. I saw a lot of sitting around, blatant drug and alcohol use, there was stealing from the job site and just a general attitude of sticking it to upper management.
What we should do is be building smaller nukes. I have always contended that 'large scale nukes with different designs every time one is built', was wasteful and helped to kill the industry. Here is a link on what could be the wave of the future.

Let us not forget Rancho Seco Nuke plant – shuttered by these idiots
Read the wiki on Rancho Seco and you'll see that it operated at 39% capacity lifetime – I researched further and found it operated at 48% for the final years of operation. You see those numbers out of context and think whoa that's bad – well here are some more numbers – The nuke industry average is 65%, the coal fired number is 34.3% – in that context even a blind person could see that Rancho Seco wasn't bad at all but pretty damn good. It supplied enough clean, pollution free power for 413,000 homes which is more than the number of homes in Sacramento! Let's not forget fuel delivery for the coal fired plants that were needed to make up the loss of power from this plant closure. Each day a coal plant of an equivalent power output requires 10,000 tons of coal to be delivered – imagine a train of coal cars 1 mile long and you'll get the picture – of course that's not counting the strip mining to produce the coal. Rancho Seco required only 6 truckloads of fuel to be delivered for one years operation. Green isn't about green but about Red- of course the dronies in the movement don't know it – they're just dupes. It is criminal what has been done to America by these loons. The problems they create out of thin air (global cooling, global warming) when we have very real problems facing us is sickening. We are throwing away prosperity and for what !

In a 5 to 4 decision, the provisions about corporations and unions was overturned. http://www.louisvuitton4love.com/louis-vuitton-ne... Nothing whatsoever about foreign donations. The president was blatantly dissembling on that claim.
