“The American Republic will endure until the day Congress discovers that it can bribe the public with the public’s money.”
– Alexis de Tocqueville
In part one we discussed how there are only two forms of government. In part two we discussed the history of those two forms. Now we’re going to discuss how the BG (Big Government, aka statist) types have infected our political system.
We’ve all heard the sordid history of Communism and hard socialist countries, which are all totalitarian dictatorships. Nations like North Korea and Zimbabwe are economic basket cases which have famines and moribund economies; police states in which human rights are non-existent. Cuba keeps its citizens prisoner and rations food. These are just a few examples of what happens when BG systems are taken to their extremes.

Human beings operate mostly out of self interest. BG systems allow an elite class to have complete control over every aspect of the public’s lives. Those who love power love to abuse it.
By contrast America has the longest running, continuous Democratic-style government in the world. As writer Mark Steyn put it: “After 215 years, the U.S. Constitution is not only older than the French, German, Italian, Belgian, Spanish and Greek constitutions, it’s older than all of them put together.” The U.S. is also wealthiest nation in the history of the human race. It has the freest economy (or did). We have liberated many millions of people around the world from tyranny and we’ve engaged in more charity and aid work outside our borders than any nation on earth.
But all of that is under the threat of ending. Ending due to a systematic erosion of the very principles that have made us great.
Our LG (Limited Government) system has been beset on several fronts. We know that in the past the BG Communists and Hard Socialists have been trying to undermine our society for almost 100 years. We now know that radical Islamists want to tear us down and have been at it for awhile. But the BG statists have failed in many of their goals. The worst threat to our country has come from within — from some of our own elite and political class.

Many American elites were enamored of the control that a Marxist government promised. It meant mastery over every aspect of society. In the minds of these elites, it could be used to create a utopia of their own devising. These people called themselves Progressives. They started in the 1880s before the Soviet revolution. They did not agree with Marx entirely, but they liked his theories overall. They wanted to break up the power structures in America in order to redirect industry toward their goals. They moved to prevent blacks, illiterates and immigrants from voting so they had more control over the results. They pushed political and moral reforms including prohibition, to try to control behavior and the direction of the country.
They saw the Constitution as a hindrance to their efforts because it limited the powers of the leaders. It promised rights that people would not want to lose without a fight. In order to convert the United States to the system they wanted, people would have to lose those rights. So they began to change the system from within.
The first progressive president was Theodore Roosevelt. He increased regulation of businesses, which was a progressive mandate. Many of these moves were good at the time, like the Meat Inspection Act of 1906 and the Pure Food and Drug Act which tried to shut down snake oil remedies. He also finished the Panama Canal and earned a Nobel Peace prize for helping to end the Russo-Japanese War. “Teddy” Roosevelt left office as a popular president and even has his face on Mt. Rushmore, But when he tried to run again for president later, against Republican William Taft, he split the vote and Democrat Woodrow Wilson was elected in 1912. That is where the problems really started.

Wilson gave us the Federal Reserve, which was designed to prevent depressions and bank problems. He gave us the “progressive” income tax which was designed to pay for the expansion of the federal government. He gave us the League of Nations, an the early form of the United Nations. It was designed to prevent wars. Only the income tax “worked,” but not as promised. It was originally supposed to be a marginal 7% tax on the rich. They promised that was as high as it would get. But they raised it to 75% on almost everyone in short order. The Federal Reserve was given unprecedented powers over the economy but it has not prevented depressions. The greatest one was to follow shortly after it was created. The income tax has been used to bribe citizens with their own money, and to pit Americans against each other in the name of “class.”
At the end of World War I there was the Treaty of Versailles that Wilson had a hand in crafting. The terms of the treaty made things very hard on Germany and Italy. In both countries it lead to economic depression which inspired the rise of the Fascist political movement. The term comes from an Ancient Roman symbol of authority called a Fasces, which was a bundle of rods, tied around an axe. Many historians want to put Fascism on the far right of the political spectrum, but the truth is, it is an extreme form of BG (statism) not far removed from Communism and Socialism. The difference is, fascism purported to be capitalist, but the government gave orders to the companies. They rejected individualism and stressed group-think like all BG systems. They targeted any cultural or ethnic groups that refused to assimilate or were out of favor with the state. Italy started it and Germany soon followed.

Many elites in America and other parts of Europe were impressed by the Fascists at first. The Fascists seemed to be getting their economies back on track. The racist polices of the National Socialists (Nazis) in Germany appealed to such luminaries as Henry Ford, Charles Lindberg and George Bernard Shaw. In fact, many leftists at the time praised the Fascists. They were allies with the Soviet Union and the left approved of the Nazi’s plans to eliminate the “undesirables” in society. We had our own version of that here.
One of the later mainstays of the Democrat’s platform is abortion and they heavily promote and defend Planned Parenthood, an organization founded by Margret Sanger. Sanger aimed to eliminate the “negro race.” She believed in forced sterilization of the poor and handicapped.
As Fascists rose to power, the world was suffering through the Great Depression. President Franklin D. Roosevelt is credited with ending the depression, but economists have found that he actually extended it by seven years. FDR in fact expended the federal government more than any president in history, up to that time. He created Social Security which was an ill conceived Ponzi scheme that promised money to people on retirement, but is not saved or invested. He created the Federal Communications Commission in order to have control of the state’s message. He wanted to institute a second bill of rights guaranteeing everyone a job and a house, etc. The government was already rationing food at this point. It put thousands of American citizens of Japanese descent in concentration camps. Whatever FDR would have done to make these “rights” happen would have likely been like something like Stalinist Russia. Many of FDR’s policies were draconian. But he died in office, having just been elected to an unprecedented fourth term, before he could fully implement them. His vice president, Harry Truman, abandoned many of FDR’s policies.
After the defeat of the Fascists in Europe, America became a world super-power. And in that time, the wealth of this country was turned against the people in a slow process of wearing us down through endless guilt and propaganda. The statists funded their excessive government expansion using the people’s money. The American statists, who had dropped the progressive name and erroneously referred to themselves as “liberals,” pushed for more statism. This lead to even greater expansion of the Federal bureaucracy and the erosion of the freedoms Americans once took for granted.
In Part 4 we’ll talk about the tactics that the statists are using to bring about a new era of Fascism in the United States. I leave you with this prophetic quote from our second president:
Be not intimidated… nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice. — John Adams

It will be almost impossible to eliminate the damage the Progressives have caused to our country. Hopefully, we can begin slowly reversing the process next year. Unfortunately, we will have to live with Obama at the top for almost another 3 more years.
I pray he doesn't get re-elected. He will undoubtedly attempt to claim credit for whatever the Republicans are able to achieve in 2011 and 2012.
We have allowed these people to take over every institution in the country for over a generation and we are now facing the horrific result. Are we too late to reverse our present course? I pray to God we are not!

Truer words have never been spoken…
I do fear NoBambi will do as Clintoon did, take credit, aided and abetted by a fawning press and entertainment media, for those things the Republicans fought for .,most notable example being Welfare Reform.
NoBambi has the media on his side, ready to catch the spears for him and his messianc Stanilist dreams. I think we should truly be prepared for such an eventuality.
Barack Obama:
'' But, the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth, and of more basic issues such as political and economic justice in society. It (the Warren Court) didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as its been interpreted…the Constitution is a charter of negative liberties… (it) doesn’t say what the Federal government or State government must do on your behalf, … there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalition of powers through which you bring about redistributive change. In some ways we still suffer from that. …
I’m not optimistic about bringing about major redistributive change through the courts. You know, the institution just isn’t structured that way.''

BHO – enemy within
We are currently facing a referendum on socialism in this country and we must prevail or all is lost, and the world will devolve into despotism and a massive geopolitical realignment.
.
Great work, James. It has taken well over 100 years for our freedom and liberty to be slowly eaten away by this progressive cancer. Our Constitution has been denigrated continuously by cowardly progressives. Just as this has happened over time, it will take time to remedy while requiring much sacrifice and perseverance. We must demand that our Constitution be followed and take whatever means necessary to protect our liberty. I have much faith in God's ability to help guide us and believe good always defeats evil. God Bless America
James,
Great article.
There are still people left in thiscountry that believe in America. In Her fundamental goodness, and in the goodness of Her people. When the chips are down, they will stand up and be counted.
The income tax has been used to bribe citizens with their own money, and to pit Americans against each other in the name of “class.”
And there you have it folks. There is a cure… Question is can we elect enough true conservatives willing to do it?

great read!
Excellant article.
It is no accident that this is all happening now. The demographics tell the story of what has been in the works for some time.
Just as drug dealers sometimes start with free samples, our own politicians have been conditioning people with government freebies.
How does one break a junkies habit? They will stoop to any means to keep that fix coming. Lie, steal, cheat, murder or even vote. How do you convince people that the easy way leads to destruction, and that the HARD way is the only way?
The enemies of freedom will stop at nothing. UK government documents prove intentional social engineering

I would be shocked if there wasn't a similar document with a DNC or CAP letterhead.
Find out just what any people will quietly submit to and you have found out the exact measure of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them.

As a christian, I cannot aid or abet any hunger or homelessness. However, there is a limit to "being thy brothers keeper" The Bible says forgive and re-forgive, time and again. I subscribe to that.
In reality, Greece and the so called pigs do not work and save at the same rate as Germany. If Germany permanently adopts them, then they become economic slaves to the inferior work ethic and lifestyle of the unions and government of lessor communities.
This must not stand, nor will the Germans allow it. Feed the Goose through hard times and then let it live or die on it's own productivity.
The EU must Go. Too much Diversity. They also should disgorge guests who do not do contribute to society. If one is given opportunity and freedom, it should not be abused….which it is now
Just my humble thoughts
We enter parliament in order to supply ourselves, in the arsenal of Democracy, with it's own weapons. If Democracy is so Stupid as to give us free tickets and salaries for this bear's work, that it's affair. We do not come as friends, or even as neutrals. We come as enemies, as the Wolf bursts into the flock, So We Come.
Joseph Goebbels
The most important thing for Americans to realize is now that a majority of us are engaged with the political process, to not let go of that, to not quit, or lose interest. This is the first time I have every seen such grassroots engagement in this country. Everybody has to keep it up, day after day, month after month, year after year. The progressives are not going to go away immediately. Their policies can change rapidly, so do not let the smoke screen of invincibility fool you. They have used ridicule and shame for years to control Americans. It does not work anymore and that is the reason they are becoming so foul mouthed. They are like a bunch of angry little kids. We are controlling the narrative now and because we control the narrative, the changes will start to come rapidly. It is important for us as Americans to be clear and united in our vision of where we want our country to go and how to go about doing that. Right now, the neocon Republican Congress has had a shot across the bow. At the precinct level, Americans are finding constitutional conservative candidates to challenge them and take their place in November. There is no stopping this process. Gov. Schwartzenegger said the Tea Party is going nowhere. Governor, the Tea Party is going somewhere, to the polls in November. You can count on it. Even if the present administration tries to ram the health-care takeover down our throats with reconciliation, it can be undone. If they pull this stunt off, two things will happen. Conservative constitutional lawyers are sharpening their knives to bring this thing to federal district court. Thirty three states are positioned right now to vote on Tenth Amendment reaffirmation. If they progressives are dumb enough to proceed with this thing, they will literally lose state support at every legislative level. Do not be scared. Keep your eye on the prize of constitutional liberty. Everything the progressives have or are trying to do can be undone. They are not permanent fixtures. Do not give them any credit. They are men, mere men, and being men do that which is unseemly.
The Nazis came to power by subverting Democracy, not by civil war. So to do they who want to destroy America from within.
Two quibbles"
"The difference is, fascism purported to be capitalist, but the government gave orders to the companies."
Fascism never pretended to be capitalist. That is an attitude attached to them by the more aggressively international socialists that want to defame it, and capitalism by association. As you note, they were always about government control.
"They targeted any cultural or ethnic groups that refused to assimilate or were out of favor with the state. Italy started it and Germany soon followed."
The targeting was primarily a feature of German National Socialism. Italian Fascism focused on suppressing opposing political groups, with the exception of their religious based suppressions in East Africa.
That should not be taken as approval of Mussolini, but at least he was not a psychotic racist like Hitler.
Well, Actually, the Germans painted themselves as the right when they were allied with Stain (who was left) so people would think there was no where to run.
As for Italy, I meant to put political in there with cultural and ethic groups. Oh well.
I believe it is time to punish the progressives for their crimes against the Republic.
Save America, wake up a neighbor!! If they can't read, read to them, if they can't see, find a way to show them, if they aren't interested, don't give up until they are!!! Complacency is the enemy of the people, only after they are enslaved will they realize, then they will blame those who tried to warn them, for their en-slavers will be their masters (gods)!!
Perfection is unattainable, don't beat yourself up. Best 100 year rundown "condensed" I have read in months. Please keep em coming…
Woodrow Wilson hasn't been castigated enough. He said:
"All that progressives ask or desire is permission — in an era when "development," "evolution," is the scientific word — to interpret the Constitution according to the Darwinian principle; all they ask is recognition of the fact that a nation is a living thing and not a machine." leading to the politics of change by whining we have now.
And after it was too late, he realized that giving the nation over to a bank was not a good plan; but how much did he do to correct it? One progressive, a hundred years ago, still very much with us.
Yes, though as I am sure we both know, it is still far to the left of any of the basic Capitalist political systems. What it meant was there was nowhere for "progressives" to run within the "progressive" (read "Marxist") superstructure, and not that he, or Mussolini, supported capitalism. I think that is key to note.
As I said, they are quibbles. Otherwise I am in full agreement.
"Woodrow Wilson hasn't been castigated enough."
It would take several hardcover volumes to begin to approach that.
The reason I avoid right or left in these articles is because those terms, which date back to the 1700s French Monarchy, are just labels. There is only two paths. The Individual vs the State. I think people waste too much energy defining themselves by right and left because it's fuzzy and they can hide a lot of meaning in those meaningless terms.

Great article. This series is the best I've seen describe the evolution of the progressive movement.
Sure Moby. Or we could just debate them and let them destroy their own agenda by getting it out in the open…..
Indeed. But despite really just referring to branches of a single ideology they are regularly projected as applying to everything, and so clarification is inevitably needed.
People bribed with their own money. Acorn and others bribing for votes in exchange for promises of receiving riches from Obama.
This is one one THE best articles anyone has ever written so far on BJ…And James you have turned into my favorite contributer here'

It looks like Al Gore in the picture of the commies at the top. Look in the lower RH quadrant at some older coot with a sharp nose. Spitting image of Al. I can't figure out how he was serving in the east german military while also serving as a senator from Tennessee… No wait. It's no problem for any damocrat to serve communism and the United States Senate. They do that ALL THE TIME!
Yeah, I was just thinking along those same lines.
It will be a long and ardous road to convince the citizens who have becom addicted to using other people's money that for the sake of their own offspring, there is no other choice other than going broke. As was done in the 1930's, the Progressives will use this as and excuse to call a national emergency and suspend the Constitution. We need to elect citizen legislators in 2010 and 2012 that are willing to cut 20-30% from the existing budget and continue the process until our debts are paid off. There are entire departments, such as energy and education that are certainly not essential to the nation. These could be entirely eliminated and then one by one have a means tests on the balance.
Where in the Constitution is there a provision for forcibly confiscating the property of one person to give it to another based on "need"? Who decides the merits of the "needs" of others? Your income is supposed to be your property, isn't it?
Where are the public "servants" that understand this? Who will protect our rights?
Repeal the 16th and 17th amendments. Restore our Republic!

But, it needs to go with your Avatar…You could be the WeWeedUpCorpsman…Nah..
FDR did not extend the Great Depression by seven years. That’s ridiculous! Your economists must beon the John Birch Society payroll. Social Security is not a ponzi scheme. It had a $169+ billion surplus last year and is owed $2.4 trillion from the Feds. By the way, I suggest you have your parents send back their SSI checks and pay their own medical bills and re-imburse Medicare.

It is a "must read" for anyone following the series and, in fact, the course of America today. It clearly illustrates the tactics of the Labour party in England and Progressives in the US. Invoke racism at every opportunity! Anyone with half an education knows that the progressives infected England long ago, perhaps before it got a foothold in the US. One merely has to look at English policy in the years leading up to WWII and their actions in Palistine after getting rid of Churchill. This stuff has been scrubbed from the US system of education (if that's what it can be called these days!)
The dominos will start falling with California. Obama will bail them out but it won't be enough. Then NY and IL will be next; the American people will scream. When inflation reaches 20&/month, we will lock and load and march on Washington; many of us will die, but it will be worth it.
You can get almost any politician to shut up by asking if what they're voting for is constitutional. Better yet, have them recite their oath of office (I have) and watch the fun begin. They, as public servants, are bound by that oath and must legislate pursuant to it or be called to account. We are precisely where we are because not enough citizens have stood up and said, "You can't do that", and they can't stand up because they either afraid, haven't read and or don't understand what it means. These "leaders", through con-artist and strongman tactics, are stealing from every American. If we won't put up with that from a common thief who tries to rob us why do we let politicians do it?
Time to grow set and stand up, folks.
When eastern european communism came to an end with the collapse of the "Evil Empire," it collapsed on itself from within. It was self induced failure. Yet today progressives/liberals/communists/Democrats continually try to extend and expand this failed socialist agenda on the backs of the American People, by trying to convince us that by taking our money, they can fix everything, but unfortunately, not quite everything. These leaders, (Obama, et al), are living proof that you just can't fix stupid, especially theirs, not even with all of the money in the world.
Wow! All I can say is excellent, excellent, excellent, two thumbs up, five stars, 10/10, triple "A", whatever dude! You have done your research, Mr.Hudnall.Thanks for touching on the fact that the Progressives were highly enamored of the Fascists, and many of their leaders saw the rise of Fascism as the dawning of a new age in mankinds history, and it surely was.The resultant suffering and tragedy still haunt us to this day in the "New" form of Progressivism.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Hanzo
Absolutely on the money. I think guys like you and Glenn Beck are doing America a great service by educating the people on the scourge of Progressivism. Keep Punching Brother and Thank You.
No way! It does look just like Dr. Evil!
It hasn't worked yet. If it comes to it, we will have to have to adopt the principle "liberty by any means necessary" or capitulate under slavery.
I'm going to be optimistic (as hard as it is these days) and believe we can break the government chains that have come to shackle us these days.
But as others have noticed, it's going to be a long, hard haul. To cut to vast amounts of government waste will be a heroic task. None of those departments are going down without a fight, be they the Mohair Subsidy Commission (yes, it's back, after being killed off once) or the seemingly endless sums spent by other "little" programs (a million here, a million there, a million little million dollar programs and pretty soon you're talking real money). Imagine the problems involved with so much as cutting back something like the Department of Education, or "Head Start," even though they are both probable failures. "But education is important!" will be the cry. Yes, education is important. But I'm sorry to say, Mommy, little Johnny might not be cut out to be a neurosurgeon. Tech schools we need, in large numbers, but all those Departments of Medieval French Literature, not so much. Maybe someday we can afford them again, but not now.
And these pale in comparison to the regulatory agencies, who every day produce more and more complex and overlapping regulations that interact with each other in unexpected ways. None of these people are voted for and the primary purpose of the administrations there is to produce new regulations, needed or not, so they can save their "phoney-baloney jobs." But again, imagine going in to, say, the FDA and trying to cut regulations back. "You're trying to kill people!" they'll scream. The SEC? "The rich will loot our savings!" Etc.
And finally, the law. The law grows, it does not shrink. We have have so many laws on the books that famous lawyers such as Melvin Belli can smirk that "We can arrest and convict anyone, any man off the street, of something." (My humble suggestion is that no new law can be enacted without taking two old ones off the books–that way, in about 50 to 100 years we'll have a reasonable system of law again). But trying to prune and streamline the legal system in the face of the most powerful force in America today–the lawyers–is a task that makes terraforming Mars look easy.
I'm not saying there's no point in rolling up our sleeves and getting to work, but people need to understand it isn't just about getting Constitutionals back into politics.
It's just that in terms of renewing America, that's just putting your boots on.
Fascism versus Marxlist-Leninism. 6 to10 million dead versus 80 to 120 million dead. I'm confused, which one are they pushing?
Progressives are like herpes, they are the gift that keeps on giving.
jesus said, pick up your bed and carry it…..he meant that the sick are responsible for taking care of themselves, not lying around for others to attend to their needs…..the government has been carrying the bed for the pathetic irresponsible losers of the nation with no initiative nor desire to work for their own maintenance or to make hard decisions and take actions to better their own lives. No one owes these people anything other than a chance for them to do better if they choose to do the work themselves. Pity is an excuse for those with excessive guilt complexes…they are sickos.
Bunning is RIGHT to hold up extensions by the US governemtn of funds for unemployment comp….it is an INSURANCE program, not a welfare program….sorry that those without jobs are having a tough time…they need to move, or get a small job or temp until things get better…not just stay on the "dole"….they have no pride and think they are entitled to get money for not working…..sorry….let them eat catfood like the poor elderly are forced to do…they are also unemployed. Life is tough…then you die. Nanny State is whimpsville. Stop throwing money to the wind, Congress.
Nice article. It's rare to read the unedited version of history. After seeing this you begin to realize that there is only one word for what we were taught in school . . . propaganda!

Well done ,James. Meet the new progressives, same as the old….could we have organized the war machine to defeat

One quibble: "At the end of World War I there was the Treaty of Versailles that Wilson had a hand in crafting. The terms of the treaty made things very hard on Germany and Italy." Umm… not entirely true.
Italy was on the victorious side of WWI. It was a member of the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary. But, when war did actually roll around, Italy decided at first to sit this one out. Italy joined the war later in 1915 on the side of the Allied Powers. At the time, the Allied Powers had the upper hand and Italy wanted in on a cut of the spoils. As a result of the Allied victory, Italy annexed the former Austrian port city of Trieste and alpine province of South Tyrolia.
Except the Italian Fascists used the treaty as an excuse for the economy and the dissatisfaction which lead to their rise to power. Did the treaty cause their economic problems? I hadn't researched that, admittedly. It was tangential to my discussion
"Progressives" are progressive in the same sense that alcoholism, Alzheimer's, and senile dementia are "progressive" conditions – they just get worse.
There is no possibility to undo the damage done. The government will destroy you, or cause continent wide destruction, before they allow that. It is too late.

Thoroughly enjoyed all four articles and I think they aptly describe the history of where we have been and where we are headed apart from the grace of God intervening in our nation and Christians rising up to defend the principles of LG, which are in harmony with the teaching of Scripture.
I do wish mssrs. bush, reagan and gingrich, and today's republican leadership, would accurately reflect the author's accurate representation of what conservatives want. start by eliminating any jobless benefit extensions, even though the nation hasn't created any net jobs for a decade. eliminate all business regulation. sell off those pesky national parks teddy gave us for development and strip mining. kill social security, medicare and medicaid.
I doubt most americans would favor that vision for america.
actually, in the book of acts converts sold everything and gave the money to the church authorities. socialists.
While I agree with the take care of yourself sentiment expressed, "take up your bed and walk" wasn't a metaphor when Jesus said that – it was a literal command to a man he had healed, not saying that "the sick are responsible for taking care of themselves". I dislike improper use of the Biblical text on the right just as much as I hate it on the left (see, liberation theology).
The Bible definately supports private property and individual work ethic – the term "The Protestant (work) Ethic" comes to mind. And besides, generosity is impossible without private ownership of property. Put that in your pipe and smoke it
