All through the 2008 presidential campaign we saw it time and again: any potential threat to then-candidate Barack Obama was sought out and destroyed by the Leftist media – MSNBC, Media Matters, Daily Kos and the like– before it could could reach a critical point in the MSM and do any damage to Their Annointed One. Whether it was Bill Ayers, Sarah Palin, Reverend Wright or Obama’s weaker than weak resume, the goal was to blow legitimate stories out of the water using whatever amount of lies, distortion, or double talk was needed to muddy those waters and confuse the narrative.
This tactic was designed to either give the MSM enough cover to ignore the story altogether or hand them the talking points necessary to blow the story back into the face of Republicans and the McCain campaign.

My favorite example of this template at work is how Obama’s ties to domestic terrorist Bill Ayers somehow morphed into a full-blown MSM storm about “hate-filled and dangerous” McCain campaign rallies. Second place goes to how Obama mangling a revealing answer to an honest question from a constituent immediately turned into a media meme over whether or not this private citizen had a plumber’s license. And let’s not forget how we all walked into the voting booth knowing more about Sarah Palin’s tanning bed than Barack Obama’s college records.
SIDE NOTE: Conservative or not, anyone who thinks this happens by accident instead of design needs to get out of the way because you’re part of the problem.
Today, there’s the potential for a real scandal brewing in President Obama’s Department of Justice regarding the charges Attorney General Eric Holder dropped against the New Black Panther Party for what might be the most obvious case of voter intimidation we’ve seen in the last 20 years. We also have a whistle-blower from the DOJ, a man named J. Christian Adams, who says that word came down from above to “Never bring another lawsuit against a black or other national minority, apparently no matter what they do.”
Obviously this is a very serious charge of outrageous discrimination that could do great damage to an already embattled and increasingly unpopular Obama Administration. So naturally the MSM has not and does not want to go anywhere near it — just like they didn’t the ACORN story or Van Jones.
This DOJ story, however, is in full bloom throughout the alternative media and the MSM can sense critical mass is about to be reached where they can either cover the story or once again (like ACORN and Van Jones) be left behind as it reaches a tipping point online. Therefore the next step is obvious…
…Keith Olbermann to the rescue!!! Here you go MSM, here are those talking points you requested.
As Larry O’Connor pointed out, Olbermann (using talking points supplied by The American Prospect’s Adam Serwer) is intentionally trying to muddy the waters over what we call a distinction without a difference. It is simply a fact that the Obama DOJ won a civil case against the New Black Panther Party and then for inexplicable reasons asked that the charges be dismissed.
—–
Olbermann knows this story is bubbling on-line and represents a potential scandal that could do real damage to His One. So, always at the ready to sacrifice what’s left of his integrity, he launches an obfuscation campaign to dishonestly turn legitimate questions into a bunch of silly right-wingery. His reasoning…?
…The Bush DOJ down-graded the charges against the Black Panthers from criminal to civil.
Of course, the DOJ still won the case.
Of course, the Obama DOJ still dropped the charges.
Honest people ask what in the world Olbermann’s point has to do with anything? Well, obviously, nothing. But we’re not dealing with honest people here. We’re dealing with an MSM desperate to NOT cover this story and Olbermann’s piece of ideological look-over-here might just give them the out they’re looking for. And if the MSM is reluctantly pulled into the story, you can bet they’ll use Olbermann’s talking points to put as much out-of-context focus as possible on the fact that the Bush DOJ downgraded the charges. Translation: That can only mean this is no big deal, right?

Over at Andrew Sullivan’s place, our mercurial friend Dave Wiegel has made the MSM’s job all the easier. As of Monday, he’s officially a ”conservative” who’s on the record buying this absurd argument and taking it a step further. Like something out of Media Matters playbook, watch what Weigel does here:
The conservative narrative goes like this: Eric Holder’s DOJ got into office and skunked a successful case against the racist fringe New Black Panther Party because it doesn’t want to defend white voting rights. (If anyone has a bunch of examples of white voters being repressed in the Obama era, please, send ‘em my way.) In several segments about the case, Glenn Beck has tied the Panthers to Bill Ayers, Charles Ogletree, and Van Jones as the latest “militant group” pulling the strings on Obama policies.
The approach isn’t subtle, but it’s enough to give the MSM the cover it’s desperate for. Essentially, Weigel conflates the legitimate question of why Holder dropped these charges and the reality of a bonafide whistle-blower into some kind of spooky Glenn Beck conspiracy, as though Beck’s involvement automatically disqualifies legitimate questions and testimony.
Obama’s Media Minions can throw all the chaff they want. Nothing changes the fact that two very important questions remain unanswered:
1. Why did Holder’s DOJ drop the charges against the New Black Panthers after they had won the case?
2. Is J. Christian Adams lying, or not?
REAL journalists want answers and are looking for them. Left-wing propagandists are doing everything in their power to make sure the American public never knows those questions have even been asked, much less answered.

Great article. While most of the MSM (not all since Fox is out there) seeks to ignore or distort the Administration's handling of the NBP case, I think the dropping of the case (and other actions) are going to cost the Demorats a lot of seats in 2010 and at least one seat in 2012.
*Shakes head* While I never thought the President would bring peace on Earth and I always knew the most liberal senator was going to govern to the left despite running as a centrist, I'm still a little surprised by how badly so many things have been handled and how out of touch the President seems to be on many issues.
Olberdork is a mouthy party hack, and only the twelve people that watch his nightly diatribe would disagree. “We The People,” are hip to his shenanigans, and real corrections will be forthcoming…soon!
When and if there is a change in Washington come november, There just BETTER be investigations and prosecutions for those in the MSM who have commited treasonous acts. Lying to the American people in order to further the medias agenda is sedition. The media have become a criminal organization and need to be made accountable.
"The point I was making was not that my grandmother, uh, harbors any, uh, racial animosity. She doesn't. But she is, uh, a typical white person who if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn't know, you know, there's a reaction that's bred into our experiences that — that doesn't go away and that sometimes come out in — in the wrong way."
————————
If I saw Malik Zulu Shabazz on the street, wearing his Black Panther garb and swinging a billy club, then my reaction, right or wrong would be one of fear / intimidation.
I guess that makes me a typical white person that, ah, doesn't harbor any, ah, racial animosity.
I think the MSM will keep quiet on this issue, just like the Gulf oil spill,we are not allowed to see the damage for political reasons. What has our country turned into? Whats next,Black Panthers hitting little old ladies over the head on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial Aug 28th? I'm sure we won't see any coverage on this event by the MSM.
When is everybody going to realize that the main stream media is going to do nothing, NOTHING, to hurt their "boy," Mr. Obama? They are in all the way with this guy. Even Obama made fun of it at a press dinner once that the main stream media is in bed with him. The main stream media has so very much invested in this guy that they can't come back to their viewers and admit that they backed an empty suit for president of the United States. And the American people are NOT dumb, contrary to what the main stream media thinks. They understand that the major networks backed an inexperienced fraud for president, which is why their ratings are tanking as we speak. A few years from now it will be a wonder if anyone is watching the main stream media. So all we can do is keep plugging away and try to inform the public with the tools we have. Luckily, we live in the Internet age where access to real information is not an issue.
It seems to be the closer we get to the truth, the more BS and propaganda they spew. We know the code language, we know their history. We will destroy them, just as our forefathers did to them after Woodrow Wilson.
LOL, the MSM is dead. Period!
While it is certainly maddening, every time the MSM ignores a critical story such as this, more of Middle America notices. The longer the MSM behaves in this manner, their credibility suffers. The more they lose credibility the more viewers they lose because even people who are non-political want to be informed and kept up to date. With Drudge, Youtube, Fox, BigJournalism, talk radio and more, these stories make their way into the public arena, unlike even 10 years back. If the MSM continue to play the "hear no evil, speak no evil, speak no evil" monkeys, they are committing rating suicide and will not survive.
Martin Luther King Jr said "An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere". It was a principled stand.
We are a long way from that now. Now we sacrifice justice for political gamesmanship.
On a separate note: we need new terminology for the "mainstream media". This term tends to point to places like CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times, etc. But since those sources are waning in power while others like Fox, the Breitbart sites, and other Right-leaning outlets are waxing, how "mainstream" are they really?
Terminology matters. The Left uses it to marginalize us all the time. (Think: "Tea-baggers", "bigots", "anti-choice", etc.).
I'm not advocating for the feeble and puerile "lamestream media" suggested by Bernie Goldberg, nor any other silly pun-based name calling. But we should call things as they are, and such outlets are anything but "mainstream".
Keep the video's and sound bites alive. Believe me. Word is getting out. I just wish more people cared enough to pay attention and take action.
Americans are not only waking to the biased and false propaganda from the MSM. They are waking to the irrefutable fact that slanted reporting cannot be exclusive of the insult that we are naive and ignorant.
MSM would not attempt its spin unless it thought that Americans were dumb enough to buy into it. The effect will be that the "waking up" will increase in speed while the MSM will proportionally lose its place in our landscape.
My nagging question is this … aren't there honest journalists out there who can't stand watching this all go down? They can be as liberal as the day is long, but they have enough integrity to see what's happening and how their peers refuse to do their job. Where are these people and why do they remain silent?
John,
Although your essay and arguments are spot-on, why did you have to use the term "Swiftboat" in the title? One, it's an affront to the group, the Swift Boat Veterans for TRUTH. The unvarnished might surmise that the leftist spin is accurate.
I realize the left has made Swiftboating into the vernacular that you employ. That doesn't mean you should follow the crowd.
Cheers, Frank
In my earlier life I would have sworn this kind of stuff never went on in the US only in the Soviet Union, China and Cuba. It seemed like a joke to talk about how corrupt politician were in Chicago and Louisiana because they were far from home and it did not impact me. How naive I was.
There was a turn for the better when Rush and the internet emerged. Obviously information gathering and dissemination has snowballed since those days. It still fascinates me how two people can look at facts and come to different outcome. My conclusion is that many people are deceived and either deny or choose to ignore truth.
If the deceivers continue to have traction in this county we are in for a rough future.
I was under, the apparently mistaken impression, the Media loved and admired "whistle-blowers'…
Well, it seems if the whistle blowing is against Big Business or conservatives, that's GOOD…
If the whistle blowing is against Big Government or protected classes, that's BAD.
and will be ignored, lied about, or spun to seem unimportant or insignificant.
Put it this way, I wouldn't be surprised if it were the case that honest people can't get jobs in the industry because their Communist professors flunked them out of journalism school.
The MSM's silence on this issue – like the Administration's – is deafening. My wife and I were listening to NPR this morning on the way to work (she sometimes likes to listen, I sometimes like to complain), and still, in the news hour we were listening to, there's been no word on this entire issue. In fact, today they were giving reports about charity organizations taking a long time to spend money in rebuilding Haiti – something they already reported on at length yesterday!
They're trying to ignore this, pretending that it's not a real news item, and the more they do it, the more obvious they make it to the American people that they're little better than a propaganda arm for the Democrats.
I'm going to have to disagree a bit with your headline, John. "Swiftboating" involves telling inconvenient truths, where the progg media is lying.
I have YET to see ONE Progressive / Liberal / Democrat denouncing this act of voter intimidation, much less the DOJs lack of interest in prosecuting what was an open-and-shut case. I think I never will. And, in the rare case I ever do, it will be followed by a "but".
"By any means necessary" is not just the Panther's creed; it is also the Progressives'/Liberals'/Democrats', creed apparently.
Nagging question? It was nagging when the dubbing of CNN was changed to Clinton News Network. It was dubious, intellectually dishonest and a complete derelict of duty in 2008.
We have moved into the sinister and professionally corrupt area brah. The question is at what point did it become felonious. Perhaps not the "journalist" but the lobbyists and politicians. The politicians took an oath to uphold the Constitution. The violation of that oath gets little attention.
The "journalists" that you are talking about are just marketing and sales agents. Think BROCHURE.
I shunned NPR in 1994. The discovery of Investors Business Daily and the Economist helped to nurture a void. Even the Economist became a joke in 2008.
Yes!
The left has turned "Swift boating" into a synonym for "frame up". It's not. It's a synonym for "expose the truth" or "debunk fraudulant claims".
I agree completely. The left uses the term "swiftboat" to mean false and deceptive attacks. Use of this term by those on the right implies that we buy into this characterization by the left of the information provided by the Swift Boat Veterans. To me, "swiftboating" should mean "telling the truth, even at great personal cost, when it's the right thing to do."
JFK, a hopelessly incompetent playboy, was snuck into office by the Chicago machine. Chicago has long made it's corruption a national concern, we just were not in a position to know about it until now.
"Swiftboating" should be redefined as "grassroots objection to a lie the news media is supporting". What the news media are doing is an orchestrated propaganda attempt to counter grass roots outrage over a crime.
The good news in all of this, John, is that the old media (I no longer refer to them as main stream since they clearly are not) no longer has the power to drive these stories. You and others have been a big part in the transformation, and for that, I salute you.
I've mentioned the New Black Panther case to several of my co-workers. Amazingly, a couple of them had never heard of it (we're pushing 2 years on it now), and were PO'd about both the incident and the fact that they hadn't heard about it. When I asked if they watched Fox News, they both said "No, I don't usually watch the news, but when I do it is NBC".
Is anyone out there surprised by their answers?
Oh, tough guy Queer Samir Sheetballs-all 120 lbs of bad ass. Well Queer Samir, im 60 yrs old , white 6ft3 245lbs and if you try shoving a night stick in my face Queer samir, Ill use my marine corp self-defense training to help fee you dinner. Your dinner will include splinters from the nightstick. Of ciourse, somehow I doubt youd have the balls to try it with me , queer samir. Your a worthless punk who isnt man enough to take on a real man, just some old man or woman who cant physically defend themselves. Pansy.
Maybe we shoudl change the name from "swiftboating" to "heinrich Himmlerazation".
"Swiftboating" is the act of smearing whistleblowers (regardless of ideology) that dare reveal the truth about a member of the liberal political or media elite, it's a misused adjective. Much like McCarthyism actually means "The act of being right but blamed for being wrong"
Back to the real story, the best illustration of this whole thing is Megan Kelly's slapdown of Kirsten Powers. While discussing the Obama DOJ, Democratic strategist (WTH is a Democratic Strategist?) Kirsten Powers showed all the mental horsepower of an advanced Alzheimers patient starting with "I don't see voter intimidation" and ending with the manditory "It's all Bush's fault"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzMUWuA-Rq4
If they won't let us deport illegal aliens can we at least deport Democratic Strategists? At least the illegal aliens know how to put in a days work without embarrassing themselves.
They tried to swiftboat it by mocking ALL the witnesses that came forward with this story….all 0 of them!
Those basterds!
At what point will the American people as a group start viewing the MSM with the same off handed contempt that was once reserved for tabloids like the National Enquirer, Star, etc?
and more importantly, stop viewing at a rate that puts them OUT OF BUSINESS.
TnJed, I like that term, "old media." MSM just doesn't fit the bill anymore.
Truly amazing when National Enquirer is breaking REAL news stories, and the Old Biased Media is not.
