Huge headline at Politico:
Opening paragraph of the story:
Herman Cain once again revised his account of the sexual harassment allegations he battled in the 1990s, saying in a TV interview he recalled there were additional “ridiculous” items in his accuser’s complaint, beyond the single incident he detailed Monday.
Not long after that explosive story published, Jonathan – He Who Trashes Private Citizens For His Precious One – Martin then tweeted the story out with emphasis on “THIS AM”:
This is obviously all part of Politico’s second wave of attacks. They are gleefully looking to tie Cain up in what they will claim are contradictory statements, because we all remember the exact details of what happened 15 or so years ago, correct?
Oddly enough, though, it looks as though Politico can’t remember what happened yesterday, because later an “update” was added to their story. Yes, an update found waaaaaay at the bottom of the story and that explosive headline is this:
In other words, when this very same Politico story (still) states that Cain “now” remembers incidents “beyond the single incident he detailed Monday,” that simply isn’t true. And we know it’s not true because Politico’s own update says Cain did mention “additional” ”simple stuff” last night on Greta’s show.
Now, I ‘m just a lowly blogger who never attended J-school or anything like that, so I’ll throw these questions out to you.
1. Doesn’t Politico’s update contradict its own headline?
2. Is this really an update or should it be, I don’t know, a correction?

Cain is being spoken of here in Canada by OUR LEFT where they haven't given a thought to ANY of the others. Let that sink in.
I would suggest we send Retracto after the folks at Politico, but I don't think Retracto deserves to be treated so poorly. Doesn't Hollyweird have some script supervisors they can share to help out the Politicontradictos?
I'm going to vote for Cain in the primaries, and if he wins, in the general election. When the assholian leftwing whackjobs keep telling me I'm doing it to hide my racism, I will stop arguing with them and tell them I'm voting for Cain out of spite. They can understand that.
The Cain campaign has handled this very poorly. A real campaign manager would have known about this and planned a response. Now it is just a jumbled mess and POLITICO and the forces of evil are taking advantage.
Shameful. I really hope in the new information age this good man will not be destroyed or martyred. Instead the vast number of good and decent people will see this for what it is. A despicable vicious smear conducted by a bunch of racist coward drones. The thing is they cannot help themselves, it is all they know. I hope this is the beginning of the great final dismantling of the Left media machine.
I hope that Cain burned the blue dress!
Whose water is Politico carrying? My best guess is Romney.
Jonathan Alter, in an incredibly stupid bid to claim Obama is honest, used the term CLOWN CAR to denigrate a Republican and his position.
Today as the hours go by we see that Politico is indeed the Clown in the clown car act. They can't report news and information being too focused on angle, strategy … sales.
The worst news to the Politico clowns is: The United States is the finest country on earth! AND WILL REMAIN SO!
Go Cain!
There's the rub. A real member of the POLITICO would have spun this… but who the hell thinks America is in need of another POLITICIAN? You need a businessman and one who made his money swimming against the stream, not a vulture capitalist nor another old money millionaire.
They've been working overtime trying to discredit him and this is the best that tens of millions of dollars in journo man-hours across your nation have been able to come up with. Think of that. If Obama had this level of scrutiny heaped upon him in 2008, he'd still be voting "present" in Chicago and you'd be seeing the name Hillary a lot more often.
Herman Cain harassment timeline.
1. Politico allegations are false. Story is crap.
2. Yes, there were allegations. But they were false.
3. Yes there were allegations that were false and I don't know what money was paid.
4. I don't know whether money was paid. And it would be wrong for me to find out whether money was paid because it's confidential.
5. There was a in-depth investigation. And I was cleared. But I don't know anything about it.
6. Here's the gesture that led to my getting accused of harassment.
7. Okay, I remember some discussion of a settlement number.
Whomever is the most left leaning of the right, name being irrelevant.
Anyway, Politico is the sleaziest outfit alive. Credibility is over for that rag — among Conservatives — forever.
Karl Rove is all over this criticizing Cain for his inept handling of the situation, but continue on blaming the LEFT for this.
Great guess. Romney fed them anti Perry stories during one of the debates. Who goes to the enemy unless they pretty much are the same?
Cain's pluses and minuses aside, he needs a campaign manager that can handle these types of situations. Mark Block might be great at running a quasi-presidential campaign/book tour, but this is the big league and Cain needs real guidance.
It's politico's unethical way of upping the ante, even if it means lying. Typical of the MSM.
My guess is that they were let go because of this which is also a major piece of litigation for what is a left leaning judicial overseeing America's labour laws. The payout would likely have been salary for a period of X set by the legal councils through examining concluded litigation within similar industry. That's pretty much standard and the "gag" on it is to not "entice" others into seeking a similar quick buck. The judicial takes the setting of precedence seriously in Canada WITH TORT REFORM and in America WITHOUT, each decision carries the weight of the world.
The left is targeting Cain for Obama which proves he's not a part of the "insiders" therefore gets my vote. I think most regular people are thinking the same thing.
I think Cain steps up with a "I could buy spin but then I'd just be one of them." and its still good.
But you ignore Cain's confusing replies on the matter.
I thought that the readers at Big Journalism would want to know that Pundit Pete Press Service is the first major national news organization to fully condemn the Politico story about Herman Cain. http://punditpete.blogspot.com/
At least there is still one mainstream news organization which is willing to take a stand for good journalism. Maybe more will follow.
I think you're all just mad the Politico gets way more traffic than BJ.com.
Jealousy is never a pretty thing.
Are the people who wrote the hit piece for Politico…the Journolista's of the past? It looks like they never went away…they never do.
(D) candidate is on tape harrasing employees… It's all good, cause we want to vote in our first "Black" president, a white man from Arkansas.
Alligations with no documentation about an (R) conservative candidate… EVIL MYSOGINIST. String him up!
Funny how the left media keeps trying this attack on the (R) with sexual allegations (Bush Sr, McCain, and now Cain), but strangely quiet when a (D) is harrasing employees, or having children in affairs while married (Edwards and Jackson).
Is this the first time you've beaten your dog?
“There is probably general agreement on the stupidity of today’s GOP,” he [Judis] said.
POLITICO’s Mike Allen, Ben Smith and Lisa Lerer are on the list. “The roster includes some of the savviest authorities on everything from behavioral economics to Ben’s Chili Bowl,” Allen said. “It’s a window into a world of passionate experts — an hourly graduate education.” http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0309/20086.h...
Said another JLister: “I don’t know any other place where working journalists, policy wonks and academics who write about current politics and political history routinely communicate with one another.”
But what if all the private exchanges got leaked?
Stating the facts honestly and immediately in the face of a media smear job is not spin. I don't expect Cain or any other candidate to spin. I expect a clear and quick response. We didn't get that in this case. What we got was a strange, almost unintelligible phone call from a campaign spokesman and a candidate saying he didn't know or do anything only to backtrack later. While I understand what they are saying, the media is piling on.
Do you walk to school or carry your lunch?
Why would he be involved with the firing let alone the settlement portion of it? You obviously don't work within a large organization nor have you ever been near the top of one. Human resources handles hiring and firing. Legal handles ALL legal matters. Its why you hire these people in the first place. You might as well bitch at him for not knowing where the cleaning supplies are or how many there will be at the Christmas party.
If you are going to argue, give it some thought.
Now why do you have "confusing replies on the matter"?
Yes, and when someone brings a charge against a person, it is investigated and the person involved is aware of it.
This comment makes about as much or as little sense as your kicking the dog comment.
Wow that's quite the retort. Take some effort or just come naturally?
Agreed, this has been handled badly, and he needs help stepping into this arena. For me the allegations aren't even the issue, its more like Cain appears to have been blindsided and is out of his depth. If he survives this, it is only going to get uglier as the campaign progresses and Cain needs solid advice on navigating the waters ahead. I can forgive him because he is new at this, but if he is going to be a serious contender, he better wise up to the game that is being played in a big hurry.
Yet you've no idea at all what that entailed now do you? Anyone can make a charge against anyone else in both Canada and the United states of America, the law. Regardless of the circumstance EVERY charge involving sexual misconduct and hate crime MUST be investigated, the law. You will be notified of the fact that a charge has been made but the CIRCUMSTANCE dictates whether or not you have to go to court, the law. If the initial charge is pure "he said she said" without a shred of evidence to support a claim Herman Cain would not have been anywhere near his accuser nor a court room. Savvy?
The campaign finance scandal is out there too. Now that could get real ugly if Mark Block and Cain campaign handle it as badly as the harassment smear job.
I tend to notice strange things but, "Jmart" politico
Is that the equivalent to the Kmart of journalism?
Enquiring Minds Want To Know… Aw shucks can't use that as it was the Kmart checkout line tabloid that nailed John Edwards… hehe
Politico cares little for accuracy in their reporting. Politico, Wash Post and the NYTimes more than any other media group is leading the charge to get Obama re-elected. They are political activists who time spent on this should be recorded as donations in kind to the Democratic Party under campaign finance laws.
Uh-huh. Yeah. You bet. That all ya got?
Are you aware of the term "conflict of interest"? There is a simple explanation as to why Herman Cain doesn't have all the details himself, either of any suspected settlement or the investigation.
As the head of the NRB, he was forced to recuse himself from the investigation entirely, and let his lieutenants in the organization handle everything, in order to avoid a distinct conflict of interest being introduced into the investigation. Herman followed the rules in this situation.
Let me put it another way; do the police/DA tell the people that they are investigating on criminal charges every single detail of the preliminary investigation, or do they keep their cards close to their chest, because of the following reason: they need to make sure that there is something substantive to the allegations, so they can press charges without fear of either tipping their hand or going forward with spurious claims and risk legal liability?
Herman Cain was aware of the investigation; just not the details.
Oh, this game is too easy to play:
I think you're just angry that a conservative black man is on his way to become President without the aid of extremely left-wing agitators.
Racism is never a pretty thing.
"1. Doesn’t Politico’s update contradict its own headline?" Yes.
1A. Isn't the updated info merely a face-saving sop to "accuracy" and it's placement at the bottom of the article an effort to ensure that not everyone will read the information? Yes.
Good point. Free PR work. Maybe the IRS would care.
I say we let Retracto bite them on their dumb arses
That's not the issue. Of course, he wouldn't be near the courtroom, genius, nor would he know the exact amount of money paid out. The issue is that two charges were filed against him and he had to know that those charges were filed. Whether the charges were valid or bogus isn't the issue and no one has sad he is guilty of any kind of sexual misconduct. The report is that he was accused and the result is that he and his campaign handled the reports in the media like a bunch of inept idiots. He changed his story about 5 times within 2 days.
That's not what he said when he first responded. Hey, Karl Rove is saying Cain really messed up in his responses, so don't make this a “liberal issue.”
Sixteen years ago, I wrote up an employee for something. I don't remember exactly what it was, but if I think about it for a while, after having time for reflection, I may remember part of it.
Does that make me a liar? Does it make me a bad person because I don't recall everything at once? Does it make me wrong if I don't remember everything?
How about you? Do you remember things that happened a year ago, let alone 10-20 years ago?
There was a confidentiality clause. Even the lawyer for the plaintiff cannot remember exactly what was in the confidentiality clause. This suit was handled by the Restaurant Association group, not personally by Cain.
We ALL know how much you Left-wingers love your high-tech lynchings of people of color. Ooooh, careful, your racism is showing!
Bill Clinton was accused of RAPE, Ted Kennedy killed a woman, John Edwards cheated on his wife who was dying of cancer and illegally paid for his mistress with campaign funds–and the Leftist media looked the other way.
Don't let the Leftist media dictate the narrative. This is just a smear campaign against a conservative–and Leftists ALWAYS accuse people of color they don't like of sexual crimes. Their fear is palpable–so you know Cain is a real threat to the Leftist Media Establishment and the Obama administration.
Send Cain some money–show your support. The statists are TERRIFIED!
All I am saying is Cain and his staff could have handled the situation better. The campaign should have known about this and other issues and been prepared to address them adequately when they came up.
Forgetting past events does not make you a liar or a bad person. However, if you are running for president and you can't be upfront with your campaign staff or you forget about something as significant as sexual harassment charges, you might be a bad candidate.
But you see, NO ONE is claiming that the claim WAS handled personally by Cain, simply that he was aware OF the claim(s), so your point is pointless. It's being reported that one of the women wants to talk publicly about her claim and tell her side, since she feels it's unfair that Cain gets to run around saying the claim is NOT true. But of course, since she signed a confidentiality clause for money, she probably won't be able to do that.I'll just keep reminding you that there is no proof who leaked this. It could have been Perry or Karl Rove as well as a liberal. Pretty funny that most of you are in denial about that.
The story made the cover of the NYT, but NOT the WSJ. The Left is having a field day, so who cares whether it was Karl Rove or Karl Marx who dredged it up.
I pointed out that fact that because the claim wasn't handled personally by Cain, he may have very little memory of the details–of the confidentiality clause–which may run both ways.
We know it's devastating for you on the Left to see blacks off the plantation, but you'll just have to get used to it!
Obi Wan best described POLITICO when he spoke of the Cantina at Mos Eisley space port in Star Wars. "Never has there been a more wretched hive of scum and villainy"
Please. I hope you're not trying to suggest that if something like this had come out with Obama, that Fox, WJS, Limbaugh and all the other conservatives wouldn't have played it up.It is difficult….I like my blacks on the plantation….wearing a fedora and just breaking into song. I don't like them being uppity like Obama, thinking he can be President. It's really just unacceptable.
We're hiding our racism by entrusting a black man with America's most powerful elected position. Handing him the F-22's and the drones. We're also gonna let him keep the little box with the red button on it.
Believing this requires a lot of will to do so.
well at least you admit it.
Romney or Obama's buddy Huntsman. <DIV style=”FONT-FAMILY: times new roman, new york, times, serif; FONT-SIZE: 12pt”> <DIV style=”FONT-FAMILY: times new roman, new york, times, serif; FONT-SIZE: 12pt”> <DIV style=”BORDER-BOTTOM: #ccc 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #ccc 1px solid; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; LINE-HEIGHT: 0; MARGIN: 5px 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; HEIGHT: 0px; FONT-SIZE: 0px; BORDER-TOP: #ccc 1px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: #ccc 1px solid; PADDING-TOP: 0px”></DIV>
Huntsman is the other possibility. <DIV style=”FONT-FAMILY: times new roman, new york, times, serif; FONT-SIZE: 12pt”> <DIV style=”FONT-FAMILY: times new roman, new york, times, serif; FONT-SIZE: 12pt”> <DIV style=”BORDER-BOTTOM: #ccc 1px solid; BORDER-LEFT: #ccc 1px solid; PADDING-BOTTOM: 0px; LINE-HEIGHT: 0; MARGIN: 5px 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 0px; PADDING-RIGHT: 0px; HEIGHT: 0px; FONT-SIZE: 0px; BORDER-TOP: #ccc 1px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: #ccc 1px solid; PADDING-TOP: 0px”></DIV>
And who is our current president? Is it race that matters or his core beliefs? We aren't hiding what ain't there. I refuse to argue as an article of faith, by the dyslexicon of the left and all of its sullied definitions. I refuse to play their game. I refuse to let them continue to define the insults.
This has not damaged my opinion of Herman Cain.
Reread what you wrote. You insinuated his not having some prepared statement to read back from a teleprompter as hinting towards his being guilty of something… anything. Oh my he's guilty of not being a polished Harvard liar. How dare he run for public office without first developing the skill to smoothly deliver scripted lies from a teleprompter. Even worse, to let someone actually ask him a question he and his team of political fiction writers hadn't authorized!?!?!
Herman Cain just doesn't get it that a black man in America doesn't speak for himself but reads what others have prepared for him to say. How terribly un-Obama of him.
Nope that's not what I was insinuating at all, but continue on with your distortion.
roflmao Rezco rang a bell, he got a pass. Slumlord supreme Valerie Jarrett and even puts her in a cushy job in the administration, he got a pass. The list is longer than this site will allow posted in a single response. Obama's record was as clean as Cain's once, if you go back far enough.
Oh and as for American "plantation" humour, they weren't hanging the happy to be getting a handout folks but those whose mantra was every man should be afforded the freedom to "reap the fruits of his labour". Those weren't the words of Democrats.
They're gonna ration this thing out as far as they can take it. Dana brought up a great point on her show about this sort of 'scandal' and the possibility of it elevating Cain's 'street cred' with people who find something troubling in a man too squeaky-clean to be trusted. It's a peculiar rationale, but it exists. I'm hoping it doesn't amount to anything further. After that, finding the source of this smear job should be our highest priority. If it turns out that it's been perpetrated by one of his rivals, we should skin him alive.
Rove, for Romney
Absolutely. They're still beating the "Ni**erhead" drums regarding Rick Perry, even though its a total non-story. Anything they can do to deflect from the abysmal craptacular dunce Obama. This is the tripe we get from the left when Dems can't run on ideas or successful policies. Its like a broken record every election cycle.
That's the problem: You claim to be thinking, when all you're really doing is letting your prejudices build a caricature and claim it's reality.
"This is the tripe we get from the left when Dems can't run on ideas or successful policies. Its like a broken record every election cycle."
This is IT for Democrats. With this dreadful economy, all the scandals surrounding him, all these delusional #occupy sycophants threatening a Marxist revolution, ect, Obama has all the potential to break that degenerate party in two or at least out-cold for a generation, if not complete extinction. If their situation doesn't turn for the better in the next 6 to 8 months, they'll go primal. There's nothing they won't do.
Why don't you go add to their numbers and stay there, hypocrite?
These false attacks are also a warning shot to all other black Americans who might dare consider leaving the Democrat Plantation.
Hey I know this dance, 1990, Clarence Thomas and Anita Hill, Thomas (another black conservative, that ran away from the plantation BTW) they tried to wreck him also, and failed miserably giving us one of the best SC Judges in recent history.
Same old song, same old dance. wouldn't it be refreshing if one of these "news"tards could come up with something original
Carth, you are right and it all makes sense when you realize this is it, all the marbles. Cain is on the verge of smashing and destroying the Dumocrap party through his simple example of achievement without a foul rap song or even gold chains. The dims are beside themselves to realize that all their lies to blacks are about to be disproven.
Now he's playing the race card! Walk it like you talk it Herman and BLAME YOURSELF!
Looks like the "Fourth Estate" is a slave plantation.
Very good post. Thinking like that is gonna elect Cain as our next President. Which is why I predicted the same back on Sep 27, just before he surged to the top. http://punditpete.blogspot.com/2011/09/pundit-pet...
Thanks for your post, Jewel.
sj, I could not agree with you more! Cain should have answered exactly like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThEAO0lt4Dw
I predict that this "scandal" will only give Herman Cain an additional boost in the polls. It could be the thing that finally puts him into unquestioned front-runner status.
They are aware of the charge and will be made aware of the result of an investigation however they normally do not receive specific information unless formal charges are brought against them.
IOW, if you were accused of theft, you would be made aware of the charge. If the investigation found the accusation was baseless, then you would be told that the charge was unfounded. You would not be told the results of any actions taken against any other involved parties due to privacy laws. DUHHHHHHH
According to your timeline above:
1. Politico allegations are false. Story is crap.
A: Politico allegations of sexual harassment were false therefore the story is crap.
2. Yes, there were allegations. But they were false.
A: Politico reported false allegations therefore story is crap.
3. Yes there were allegations that were false and I don't know what money was paid.
A: I recused myself from the investigation therefore I am not privy to the results affecting the other involved individuals.
4. I don't know whether money was paid. And it would be wrong for me to find out whether money was paid because it's confidential.
A: I recused myself from the investigation therefore I am not privy to the results affecting the other involved individuals due to privacy laws.
5. There was a in-depth investigation. And I was cleared. But I don't know anything about it.
A: Politico reported false allegations therefore story is crap. I recused myself from the investigation therefore I am not privy to the results affecting the other involved individuals due to privacy laws.
6. Here's the gesture that led to my getting accused of harassment.
A: Politico reported false allegations that this gesture is harassment therefore story is crap. I recused myself from the investigation therefore I am not privy to the results affecting the other involved individuals due to privacy laws.
7. Okay, I remember some discussion of a settlement number.
A: Politico reported false allegations that this gesture is harassment therefore story is crap. I recused myself from the investigation therefore I am not privy to the results affecting the other involved individuals due to privacy laws. I do know the individuals left the agency and that a settlement of pay was discussed as is done with all individuals leaving an agency.
The biggest issue which you seem to fail in addressing is that an individual made a false allegation and left the agency with a few months severance pay. If this had been a real case of sexual harassment then the individual would have taken it to civil court and won 6 figures minimum in compensation. Instead the individual left the agency with a few months severance pay and a legal document whereby neither party would discuss why the individual left. If this had not been in place then the individual would have had trouble finding employment after making false allegations.
Now old Herb is remembering that the woman wasn't a good employee. Amazing how his memory is coming back, isn't it?
Well, as it turns out it wasn't a few months, it was a year's severance pay. The story itself is becoming irrelevant in the light of the horrible way Herb is handling the situation.
Nice try at deflection however your reading comprehension skills appear to be atrocious.
So you're one of the hermits?
Cain has the biggest day in funding yesterday, looks like this ploy is backfiring for whomever is responsible. Spend the money wisely Herman, find some good folks to help elevate the campaign, Herman Cain the real deal!!
Cain, being one of dem uppity blacks, who don't know his place on the plantation, will sure make them hacks become apoplectic when we the people elect him to fix the mess this poser in chief has made. I, for one, can't wait to see him sworn in.
We the people MUST not be discouraged by the high tech lynching that's happening now, because the closer we get to the 2012 elections, the more the liberal Marxists will bark.
I'll vote for Cain for no other reason than he isn't a politician. I believe he is a man that will do what he says he will, regardless of the barriers the left throws at him.
Mr. Cain has been married to the same woman for over 40 years. No one who takes marriage that seriously is going to jeopardize it for some floozy, it just don't happen that often.
We the people have been led around by the nose from the same people who hid JFK's, RFK's, Clinton's, etc. etc. hanky panky from us. They believe it's their duty to pick and choose who gets to be president. If them electing Obummer isn't enough proof for us, then maybe we don't deserve the America that was passed down to us.
Imho, we the people must rid America of all career politicians. If we look to the founders as people of character, and full of patriotic wisdom, then we should understand the model they left us, citizen government. Congress was NEVER meant to be a career. The intent of the founders was for regular people, from all walks of life, to serve their fellow Americans for a time, then return to civilian life, much like the military.
Who says that congress must be made up of lawyers, people who were taught to lie. Anyone can surround themselves with experts when dealing with things they don't fully understand, and congress is no exception.
In the 2012 and future elections we the people MUST start to take America back from the Marxists communists who've infiltrated our government at all levels.
…and remember the videos done a few years ago – a staged minor bus accident – and people nearly stomped each other attempting to GET ON the bus. Now – why would they do that??
Ah yes. Because SOME people are involved in scams, it therefore follows that the probability is very high that these 3 women who claimed that Cain exhibited inappropriate behavior toward them are also engaged in a scam. Logic 101. Of course – that settles it.
