Real Clear Politics (RCP) soothes me. Just clicking over to their homepage, which I do a few times a day, isn’t just about getting an information fix on the latest polls and headlines, it’s about reaffirming my belief that objective journalism isn’t dead.
The RCP front page epitomizes what the front page of any objective news outlet should look like. There’s no narrative, no code that can be cracked. There’s only information and facts, and the original reporting they do is some of the best you’ll find on the Web.
Yes, Virginia, there is a journalistic ideal and it lives here.
Unfortunately, if this article was voice-over for a film, you would insert the record scratch here.
My opinion about this new wave of fact-checking we’re seeing in the MSM is clearly on record, and it would be hypocritical of me not to point it out everywhere, even when the outlet doing the fact-checking is one I respect. Yes, some things are simply black and white, but in the world of partisan politics, especially with respect to the politics surrounding what will be a bitterly fought presidential election, the nuance and shadings and contextual challenges are too murky and vast for anyone to get their arms around. Good faith, and I have no doubt RCP has plenty of that, just isn’t enough to overcome the insurmountable.
Proof of that, unfortunately, can be found in a piece published at RCP yesterday, titled “The True State of the Union.” It’s a fact-check analysis of the state of our union under President Obama, which is broken up into five chapters. The introduction into those chapters ends with this claim: “Here is a nonpartisan snapshot of where the nation is in five areas.”
Regardless of RCP’s intent (which I’m not questioning), what’s been labeled “non-partisan” and “true” is, instead, analysis and opinion — much of it I disagree with. One example can be found in the section titled, “Military, Alliances and U.S. Image Abroad“:
Poll after poll indicates that the United States is not only viewed favorably abroad, but the country’s image has been enhanced under President Obama in comparison with his predecessor, George W. Bush. Investors outside the United States, who do not know Mitt Romney or Newt Gingrich in depth, say they want Obama to be re-elected, according to a quarterly Bloomberg Global Poll of worldwide investors, traders and analysts released Thursday.
And Obama’s reputation for leadership on the world stage remains on solid footing in most countries, according to polls, even as international assessments of the president have grown more equivocal around the world since his historic 2008 election.
To declaratively state that our country’s image has been “enhanced under President Obama” is not a fact, nor is it even a “nonpartisan snapshot.” The author of the piece is Alexis Simendinger, and his position is, at best, arguable.
If our image is “enhanced”–and there is plenty of evidence to the contrary– the question is why and whether or not that enhanced image is due to moral and just policies that represent what’s best for our country and allies. Bowing to foreign leaders and leading an Arab Spring from behind that’s turned into a Sharia Winter, might make you popular, but it’s with all the wrong people. Chastising Israel over apartments built on their own land while ignoring Palestinian rockets being fired into Israel, might make you popular, but it’s for all the wrong reasons.
It might be real easy for me to become the most popular guy in my neighborhood if I gave away everything I owned, including my self respect. But those increased poll numbers wouldn’t mean that what I’m doing is good or right or what’s best for my family.
Simendinger might think those increased poll numbers are a good thing, but that’s his OPINION, and far from a nonpartisan one. What his analysis most certainly is not is objective fact.
When it comes to America’s reputation in the world, what I care about — and I don’t think I’m alone — is who trusts us and who respects us and who fears us. If it’s the right countries and leaders falling into the correct one of those three categories, only then is the President doing something right. ”Favorability,” on the other hand, means nothing and tells us nothing. We could dismantle our military tomorrow and increase our favorability ten-fold.
There’s plenty more to deconstruct in this RCP opinion piece, but I don’t want to pile on over a single mistake. I don’t want to fact-check their fact-checking–only to point out the pitfalls of the media’s fact-checking meme, which often offers partisan opinion under the guise of nonpartisan analysis.

"When it comes to America’s reputation in the world, what I care about — and I don’t think I’m alone — is who trusts us and who respects us and who fears us. "
An excellent point by john Nolte. Under Obama:
Who trusts us? Certainly not Isreal.
Who respects us? Nobody really. Not even those whom Obama bows to.
Who fears us? Certainly not the pseudo nation of Palestine. Nor Iran. Nor Syria.
It might be real easy for me to become the most popular guy in my neighborhood if I gave away everything I owned, including my self respect. But those increased poll numbers wouldn’t mean that what I’m doing is good or right or what’s best for my family. -Nolte
It is also not sustainable.
Of course Obama is approved of by investors who arn't Americans.
The lower the US , the better for them. but not good for us.
We're told Barack Obama's history and character are somehow off-limits. But personal history makes character, and the character of the President of the United States is something we have a right to be interested in. In Part 1 of this meticulously researched and and sourced series, Bill examines both the Dunhams and the Obamas — each steeped in Marxism and anti-Americansm and each a long, long way away from mainstream American culture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVgRRbDuZvY
Let me expand on your list of those who don't respect us…anyone with nuclear capabilities, anyone to whom we owe money or owes money to us, and anyone who we buy from. Oh wait, one more…anyone who has the ability to aim any kind of weapon at us.
And if I were Israel, I wouldn't respect America in the least, just because of obama and his minions. It is so sad that obama has abandoned Israel, it surely shows the obama "administration" not only doesn't respect Israel at all, but is perfectly willing to see Israel wiped off the face of the earth. Sadder still, Israel NEEDS us. How awful to need help from a country which shows them the back door, literally. Israel made the best of a bad situation, struggled, and showed the modern world what hard work, and liberty for all, can do. Too bad, that the "obama administration" forgets our own history…liberty and hard work turned America into the mightiest country of all, and obama is ready, willing and able to destroy, or allow others to destroy, a miniature, and modern, version of the USA.
Did I miss anyone?
A great deception is upon us, concieved by an unnatural hand.
All the fact checking will not reveal or unravel the depth of the lies untill it is too late.
Truth is hidden and will not be restored, at least not for the next 7 years. (or longer)

Why Barack Obama is an anti-colonialist
By Dinesh D'Souza
Friday, October 8, 2010
If you want to understand what is going on in the White House today, you have to begin with Barack Obama. No, not that Barack Obama. I mean Barack Obama Sr., the president's father. Obama gets his identity and his ideology from his father. Ironically, the man who was absent for virtually all of Obama's life is precisely the one shaping his values and actions.
How do I know this? Because Obama tells us himself. His autobiography is titled "Dreams From My Father." Notice that the title is not "Dreams of My Father." Obama isn't writing about his father's dreams. He is writing about the dreams that he got from his father.
In his book, Obama writes, "It was into my father's image, the black man, son of Africa, that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in myself." Those who know Obama well say the same thing. His grandmother Sarah Obama told Newsweek, "I look at him and I see all the same things — he has taken everything from his father . . . this son is realizing everything the father wanted."
But who was Barack Obama Sr., and what did he want? Do the views of the senior Obama help clarify what the junior Obama is doing in the Oval Office? Let's begin with President Obama, who routinely castigates investment banks and large corporations, accusing them of greed and exploitation. Obama's policies have established the heavy hand of government control over Wall Street and the health-care, auto and energy industries.
President Obama also regularly flays the rich, whom he accuses of not paying their "fair share." This seems odd, given that the top 10 percent of earners pay about 70 percent of all income taxes. Yet the president would like this group to pay more.
Some have described the president as being a conventional liberal or even a socialist. But liberals and socialists are typically focused on poverty and social equality; Obama rarely addresses these issues, and when he does so, it is without passion. Pretty much the only time Obama raises his voice is when he is expressing antagonism toward the big, bad corporations and toward those earning more than $250,000 a year. I believe the most compelling explanation of Obama's actions is that he is, just like his father, an anti-colonialist. Anti-colonialism is the idea that the rich countries got rich by looting the poor countries, and that within the rich countries, plutocratic and corporate elites continue to exploit ordinary citizens.
I know about anti-colonialism because I grew up in India in the decades after that country gained its independence from Britain. And Barack Obama Sr. became an anti-colonialist as a consequence of growing up in Kenya during that country's struggle for independence from European rule. Obama Sr. also became an economist and embraced a form of socialism that fit in well with his anti-colonialism. All of this is relevant and helpful in understanding his son's policies.
Consider the article "Problems Facing Our Socialism" that Obama Sr. published in 1965 in the East Africa Journal. Writing in the aftermath of colonialism, the senior Obama advocated socialism as necessary to ensure national autonomy for his country. "The question," he wrote, "is how are we going to remove the disparities in our country, such as the concentration of economic power in Asian and European hands . . .?"
Obama Sr.'s solutions are clear. "We need to eliminate power structures that have been built through excessive accumulation so that not only a few individuals shall control a vast magnitude of resources as is the case now." He proposed that the state seize private land and turn it over to collective cooperatives. He also demanded that the state raise taxes with no upper limit.
Just in case the point is unclear, Obama Sr. insisted that "theoretically there is nothing that can stop the government from taxing 100 percent of income so long as the people get benefits from the government commensurate with their income which is taxed." Absurd as it seems, the idea of 100 percent taxation has its peculiar logic. It is based on the anti-colonial assumption that the rich have become rich by exploiting and plundering the poor; therefore, whatever the rich have is undeserved and may be legitimately seized.
Remarkably, President Obama, who knows his father's history very well, has never mentioned this article. Even more remarkably, there has been virtually no media coverage of a document that seems directly relevant to the current policies of the junior Obama.
Yet when the senior Obama's article is placed side by side with the junior Obama's policies, it seems evident that the father's hatred of those on top, and his determination to confiscate their wealth, is largely replicated in the son.
Barack Obama is popular overseas.
Adolf Hitler was Time Magazine's "Man of the Year". Lenin and Stalin were enormously popular throughout Europe prior to WW II. Popularity tells you only about what people believe about someone, not anything about what that someone actually is.
Loved or hated, Obama is worst president America has had in over 60 years which is quite an accomplishment considering that his competition was G W Bush, Richard Nixon and LBJ. ObamaCare, the NDAA, twice as many regulations per year as his predecessor, a stagnant economy and a malaise that makes you look back fondly at the Carter administration. What worse can happen? We'll know in 2013.
Will be interesting to see what unravels if the anemic GOP candidate, somehow, manages to miss the open goal slap shot from 3 feet away.
Wonder if they have to back up to their paychecks when Soros hands them out.
"Poll after poll indicates that the United States is not only viewed favorably abroad, but the country’s image has been enhanced under President Obama in comparison with his predecessor, George W. Bush." Interesting qoute, because my friend works for a Belgian multi-national company, he says every time he goes to headquarters, everybody is laughing about how bonehead is ruining our country.
Simendinger's mistake is confusing and conflating Obama's positives in other countries with the US's standing around the world.
His Oneness had almost no contact with his father. He and his mom were in Seatle at the U of W within a month of his birth. Check out Jack Cashills Deconstructing Obama.
Who cares if Israel trusts us? They have betrayed us a multitude of times. Why are you concerned about them? Maybe you should go there and not come back.
Israel is a pseudo-nation – they refuse to declare their borders. Thus they don't meet the basic qualifications of a nation state.
note the virtues that are praised in this article are no where to be found here on these sites.
It is for the GOP to lose – and with out-of-touch pro-war loons in an increasingly war-weary nation, it is all but certain they will if they choose anyone other than Ron Paul.
There's a mighty lonely bridge out there somewhere…
My grandfather and his paternal linage, publishers and newspaper men, all, would surely cry in heaven to hear me say this. But, I no longer give a rip about what any pollster, pundit or print agency puts out there for public consumption.
Possessive of a sufficient level of literacy and a high degree of motivation, I am quite capable of my own research and "fact checking", thank you. However, there is one headline and byline, come November, which I shall cherish and probably save just as my grandfather saved the NYT front page headline regarding the Titanic tragedy of 1912.
May it read:
UNPRECEDENTED AND HISTORIC:
A Landslide Victory For His GOP Contender and A Devastating Avalanche of Defeat for America's First Black President, Barak Obama.
Catapulted into the White House in 2008 by white guilt, minority tribalism and fellow traveler socialists, Obama's reign of a presidency touted by the media as historically grand and above reproach (except in the minds of racists/sarc) came to an undignified end last night. With over 90% of votes tallied nationwide, >76% of the ballots have gone to the Republican presidential candidate, _________.
I've used to hit RCP religiously too. And then one crack. And then another crack. And another. And another.
I can tell you unequivocally that Alexis Simendinger is short on facts and long on illusions. An impromptu meeting with a sales executive in Taipei over some killa goose & seafood rendered a far different tale Alexis. I was "forced" to remain with my new found friend until his friend and I could meet.
Hell. Why not? The food was great. I was startled that his friend spoke perfect English. He was from New Jersey originally and was now a tech research analyst for a few hedge funds. Alexis? Want his email address?
To paraphrase, we are a laughing stock. THE number one subject was debt and the now pathetic future for the US consumer. Bush was bad no doubt. But numbers don't lie Alexis. Only people do. Kindly put on the dunce cap now.
There are two groups of people who would confirm Alexis' assertions. Those enjoying the Fall of the USA and those with Eyes Wide Shut: Russia being the former and Europe being the latter. Ergo you see my reason for being in Asia.
IfI went there now perhaps I would not come back after being killed by a Palestinian. But if I went to Isreal ad then to, let's say, the West Bank ad witness thfor myself the lack of freedom and prosperity, I'd want to return back to Isreal as soon as I could. Modern-day Isreal is nothing short of a miracle and they are our friend: a mighty strong and personal friend. Obama has decisively turned on them.
I think this fool must have interviewed the Dixie Chicks. Only Islamist and dictators have any affection for Obama. Our traditional allies no longer trust us to do what we say or to be there for them if they need us. If you go to any inner city you will find 100% favor for Obama. Does that mean that he is liked and respected by 100% of American citizens?
What an idiot. I too like and respect RCP but I hope that I do not see more articles by this half wit.
You would find out pretty soon they don't respect and in many cases outright despise Christians. "
Even if it were true, why would that bother you Adolf ?
America's image abroad enhanced under Obama.Wonderful talking point but the evidence is….where? Who? Speak to Brits,Canadians,Indians or Japanese and see what they have to tell you.One thing that Obama has actually managed to do is to put the Israelis and the Saudis on the same page. They both think that he is a clueless stiff
And here comes the obligatory Joo-hater.
Your ilk have been a cancer for centuries. But no matter how many times you come and go – Israel lives on.
Wars can be fought and won much quicker, with far fewer casualties, if Leftards kept their noses out of it. Because of your self-righteous politics, wars are dragged out far longer than is remotely necessary. But as long as your phony 'peace and love' vanity is appeased with disastrous, delicate rules of engagement, that's all that matters to you. You can feel good about yourselves because you talk big about peace and freedom, but contribute absolutely nothing to preserve either.
Maranatha.
Good post, If you get a chance please send to some points on the
7 year time line. I am not up to speed on that one, unless I have forgotten something.
Thanks, Charles D. Vaughn
It is hardly the GOP's election to lose. Especially 10 months before the election. Ten months is a very long time. Both sides can make gains, lose them, and gain them back a couple times over before November.
You're talking apples and oranges, ZMB.
I am not qualified to teach on that matter.
Please watch the Jack VanImpe program, Dr. VanImpe offten defines the time line of Bible Prophesy.
God bless you.
I'm not on the Left
Israel was created less than a century ago and they have pretty much run their course.
I work overseas and I could give a s**t if my current host country 'likes' the US or not. What I do care about is whether or not they support the US and agree with it's principles of freedom, and I don't care if that support is due to genuiine affection or abject fear.
a718924;
I recieved an emai update on your reply but out of repect for the author deleting your delusional post I will not respond to it in its entirety but only one part of it. While Isreal has recieved much aid from the West, so has Palestine yet who porspers? Isreal. This is by choice. Isrealis choose freedom. Palestinias choose oppression. Isrealis build while Palestinians destroy. No amount of aid inthe world can proseper such a barbaric society. And why did Yasser Arafat die a billionaire? Because he kept the billions sent to the Palestinians for himself. And don't forget that so much of that aid was given to the Palestinians by the West through Isreal. Isreal far and away exceeds the Palestinians not only in freedom but in charity. Isreal's choices are far above and beyond anything that Palestinians have made since Isreal'smodern-day inception.
Just remember, Palestinians want to kill all Isrealis and wipe Isreal out. Isreal does not want to kill Palestinians and wipe them out. Isreal's the only Democracy and country with freedom of religion in that part of the world.
That doesn't necessarily mean that Body Odor wasn't influenced by his father. The influence could be via his grandmother, mother or his father's writings.
Wars are supposed to be won. Not fought til stagnation. If we had the political will we would have won the Korean War, the Viet Nam War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The problem lies solely in Washington and not with the U.S. Military. If the politicians in Washington – military and civilian – stopped micromanaging wars the wars would be won quickly and with fewer casualties on both sides.
Positives? He has positives?
Wars are supposed to be won. Not fought til stagnation.
Says who? Read Orwell. He called it. Perfectly. Why not – he was on the inside!!!!!!!!!!!
Stop being a fool. Wake up.
Real Clear just the latest to sell out. Bloomberg has the bombshell that investors want Obama-wow. He's the best thing that ever happened to Wall St. Even the left knows this. Rolling Stone did a big piece about it 12/10/2009 by Matt Taibbi titled "Obama's Big Sell-out." (archived but I made a copy). Per Zogby poll, the world hates us more than it did with Bush, Salon.com article, 9/19/11, "How Obama's destabilizing the world" by Nick Turse. "A recent Zogby poll in six Arab countries found Obama has driven anti-American sentiment even higher than it was under George Bush." (parag. 25 in article) The article says Obama is 'garrisoning' the world, supplying arms and building military encampments in places all over the world we don't even know about.
…assuming, of course, that you ignore 3000 years of history.
I don't think anyone here wants to use George Orwell's maunderings as the template for how to run a country.
He still polls higher in most countries than he does here. They still love him in most of Europe. But they still hate the US.
Which is fine with him, and with the MSM.
Well, I would say he might have improved opinion in the middle east and Kenya. Unfortunately, not many give a rat's arse about what they think over there since they are Neanderthals.
In the last few thousand years, Israel only existed in the last 70 or so.
Do you confuse modern day Rome with the Roman Empire?
No, but that is what is being done and you have to recognize it if you want to oppose it.
I agree, I don't care what foreigners think about the US, I just love the disconnect between the media running story after story about how loved we are overseas since Bush left office, yet everyone I talk to that travels tells me how much everyone over there is laughing about how clueless Obama is.
The news media overseas is every bit as biased as the news media here, just about slightly different things. Obama is making the US popular among the self styled intellectuals, the Parisian college students, etc.
