As Big Journalism readers know, a New York Times reporter accused a speaker at CPAC of using “racial tones” and “racial stereotypes.”
I was that speaker.
Last week, I was invited to participate on a panel to discuss my forthcoming book, Obama Zombies: How the Liberal Machine Brainwashed My Generation. The New York Times’ Kate Zernike wrote up the speech for the NYT’s “Caucus” blog. This was her headline:
CPAC Speaker Bashes Obama, in Racial Tones.
In the very first paragraph, Zernike writes, “How can conservatives win the youth vote that overwhelmingly went for Barack Obama in 2008? At the Conservative Political Action Conference, apparently, some are betting on using racial stereotypes.”
Her evidence? Nothing I actually said, but to her tin ears, I was allegedly channeling a “Chris Rock” voice. Yes, Chris Rock.
Regarding my closing statement, Zernike opines, “Can we save our generation from Obama zombies, he [Mattera] asked. He answered himself by borrowing the president’s campaign slogan: ‘Yes, my brothahs and sistahs. Yes we can!’” Obviously, Zernike is insinuating I purposely mispronounced the words “brothers” and “sisters” in order to mock black people, particularly President Obama.
Now to the facts:
For those of you who don’t know me, I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. In fact, I spent 18 years of my life there. I, like most New Yorkers, have a discernable speech pattern, a reality that shouldn’t come as a surprise to an employee of the New York Times.
My alleged “Chris Rock” voice is actually the way I sound every day. Zernike could have figured this out for herself had she spoken with me in person (trust me, I’ll talk to anyone), or at least she could have taken a minute to pull up one of my YouTube videos. Instead, Zernike, who must consider herself some kind of dialect expert, attempted to tarnish my name and stigmatize CPAC for inciting racial animus towards our President. All based on… my Brooklyn accent! You can’t make this stuff up.
And thus, here is my formal request for the New York Times to completely retract Zernike’s vile smear. There is no more serious charge in American society than the accusation of racism and Zernike leveled such a charge against me, a person she has never met, on the basis of something as flimsy as her limited understanding of my speech pattern. Not only should the Times correct the record promptly, but they should hand Zernike a pink slip for such a bald-faced character assassination
For the record, Zernike must not even know what it means to impersonate Chris Rock. I sound nothing like him. Nothing. Judge for yourself. In any event, she obviously has her own racial demons to wrestle with if she thinks, as she apparently does, that all minorities sound the same. As a Puerto Rican man, I find such characterizations absurd and offensive.
Moreover, the Left continues to devalue the meaning of the word racism. To them, politicians driving pickup trucks and Tea Party activists protesting government spending have racial overtones. Remember when the media elites told us that the election of Barack Obama would heal America’s racial wounds? Ha! Just a year into his presidency and all of a sudden delivering a speech with a Brooklyn accent is treated like a hate crime.
How’s that post-racial America working out for you, New York Times?

The New York Times has lost all credibility with the American people. Nearly everyday we learn of their bias, and how willing they are to mislead the American people. What happened to truth? Today, truth is dead in the MSM. They prefer propoganda to truth. It is a sad day. Did they all go to the Joseph Goebbels school of propoganda?
Indeed it is time for conservatism to go on the offence. The "progressives" have earned an ass kicking.
It'll be a cold day in hell when anyone at the New York Slimes (other than their ombudsman) apologizes for anything the paper says about conservatives.
Apparently, this "reporter" was all caught up on her chores that particular day. As you know, an idle mind is the devil's workshop and idle hands are his tools.
No, that wasn't it. This was character assassination, plain and simple, and the New York Times has, as a MATTER OF COMPANY POLICY, engaged in it time after time. You, sir, are right to protest this incredible corruption of the work in which they're supposedly engaged, reporting the news.
Still, considering the source of the smear, some would consider it a compliment. This Zernike character reveals far more about herself than she supposedly reveals about you and your audience. This proves once again — the left doesn't mind going straight for the sewer, first time every time. Their readers are so uncritical as to be myrmidons for their puppetmasters, the LameDream Media.
Thanks for your stalwart defense of American values.
I loved Jason's speech, and said so in two comments at Zernike's blog piece at The New York Times.
However, the Times' moderator chose not to approve my comments for viewing, but hid them from their readers' view. Instead, they allowed tons of other comments from people accusing all Republicans of being racist.
Zernike's piece did not include a link to the video of Jason's speech. I also included the full title of one YouTube version, but of course, their readers did not have an opportunity to see it.
Join the crowd, as someone from the great state of Alabama, with a cliche' southern accent, more than once in my life I have been assumed to be a racist, since everyone with a southern accent also has a robe and hood in the closet. I learned years ago, to ignore the attacks .
I dunno.
I'm listening, and I gotta say Jason sounds kinda like a working-class, light-skinned Puerto Rican from Brooklyn who's trying to sound like a light-skinned black guy with no negro dialect. Unless, of course, he wants one.
Fortunately, Mr. Mattera, the New York Times calling you a racist (or implying such) is about on the same level as them saying you drive a 2008 Toyota Camry or grow hothouse roses. They are a toothless lion these days…
Nevertheless, bravo for calling them out. I hope you get some measure of satisfaction.
Welcome to the South, honey.
Kurtis, folks that think every person with a southern accent is a racist, have about the same depth of understanding as the folks who think Jews have horns and all black people tap dance. Somehow though, they get an open stage and rounds of applause for their bigotry.
It's amazing to me that the progreesive liberal communist can't fight the message we are hearing from CPAC and others, all they can do is try to discredit the messenger. The message is resonating across the land and the conservative base is working very hard now at the local level with a solid plan to hold these crooks accountable where ever they are found.KEEP THOSE CAMERAS ROLLING BOYS.
Doesn't Obama himself mock blacks when he affects, per Harry Reid, his "negro dialect"?
(not to mention Mrs. Clinton)
The New York Times pulling out the race card imagine that. If you can't argue the facts, attack the messenger; this sounds familiar, oh yea it's in the Progressive play book.
I just made a third attempt to leave comments on the New York Times' blog thread. Let's see if this time the moderator approves them. Here they are in full:
Zernike is flat out lying to her readers. Mattera did not say anything remotely "racial" (which I guess is supposed to fool people who equate that word with "racist"). Nor did he speak in a Chris Rock voice (or anything resembling it), but in a Brooklyn accent. His own accent, actually. Even his own pronunciation of the words "brothahs" and "sistahs" is remarkably subtle.
Zernike has done her readers a disservice by not including a link to Mattera's speech, so that they may hear it for themselves. But you can find it easily by search for Jason Mattera CPAC on YouTube. You will see that Zernike is projecting her own perceptions of what blacks sound like onto Mattera.
This is the third comment I have left on this thread. The other two were not approved by the moderator. What is The New York Times afraid of? Was it offended when I called attention to Obama's dwindling support? Or the Times' dwindling readership?
Perhaps it was confused that I did not invoke visions of the Ku Klux Klan, Jesse Helms, or Germany in the 1920s.
Actually, Zernike completed her chore of the day – baselessly smear conservatives as racists.
That's just " how she rolls "…
I like the way you're making an issue of this. When the racist charge goes unanswered and ignored, you end up like George W….marginalized and powerless.
Once a proud left leaning paper with a global audience, the NY Times has devolved into a little liberal boutique. As unfair as her slander was, it matters very little in the long run. Only a small group of hard core leftist will ever read it. Nobody takes the times seriously anymore. This should be seen as a "red badge of courage", you haven't really arived until the MSM starts calling you racist. The funny part of coarse is how intolerant, and narrow minded these smarmist really are. NY Times —RIP—, burn in hell
The NYT wrote the story to fit the headline obviously.
NYT Editor: "CPAC, Race-something, Speakers" we've got it all in the headline, just fill in the blanks…
Zernike: Sure, Mr Editor. (an hour later) Well I didn't actually hear anything that sounded racists BUT one speaker said "brothers and sisters." Maybe we can tie that into racism?
NYT Editor: Sure, sure we can. (Thinks for a split second) "CPAC Speaker Bashes Obama, in Racial Tones." Yeah, yeah…I like it.
Zernike: I am sure I can write up something that fits that..
NYT Editor: Sure ya can kid. this is the New York Times!
It's like the old Dr. Pepper jingle. "She's a racist; he's a racist, you're all racist…"
As a fellow Brooklynite, Jason, I got your back.
Kate Zernike is a Useful idiot of the Lying Socialist Left.
They are enraged that their years of plotting a 'fundamentally transformed America' are imploding before their eyes.
Tough t*tties. Sucks to be them….besides, the New York Post's circulation is rising, while the NY Times is crashing.
Small wonder when you see the dreck the NY Slime "putains" puts out…
Stay Strong, Brave and Beautiful for America !
A verbal inflection makes one racist based on percieved ethnicity, I am so screwed being brought up in Pittsburgh.
You know you hit home brother when they scream racist. Embrace their silly invectives as a victory. The sooner we render all of the left’s “isms and obias” as the throw away terms that they are, the sooner we can rid ourselves of ‘60s radicalism. Keep up the good work!
Good going, Jason! We must not only become the party of "No," but also of "Oh, no you don't!" Racism is owned by the left. We don't own it, we never did, and we never will. Furthermore, we will no longer be silent, but will point out the very racism of the left which they fail to notice, and which they never decry.
Funny that the Progressive's who propagate policies that for the last 45 years have enslaved the inner-city poor to a never ending cycle of poverty, crime and addiction would call people who promote human dignity "racists." It is time to go on the offensive and expose these liars for what they are…….slave masters!
I read the article. It was fairly incoherent. Every new line I was waiting for the big racist reveal, the stereotypes we're relying on. I thought there was going to be a stereotyping of B. Obama, but it never came. Instead I get a passing comment about someone sounding like Chris Rock. I've listened to Chris Rock too. Have at least one of his comedy albums on my computer. If anything, he's got less of a Brooklyn accent. Besides, if we wanted to make fun of anyone's way of speaking, wouldn't the president himself be a better target?
Um… Uh…. uh…
You rock. I loved your speech. Have faith. These "zombies" are getting desperate and it shows.
Wow, the comments over that NYT blog are dripping with Irony. A NYT writer mischaracterizes a speech based on her own racial prejudices as racist and all the NYT goons jump up and scream racist.

I'd say you have a case for libel. Based on definaton 2: subsection (a) a statement or representation published without just cause and tending to expose another to public contempt.
That sounds exactly like what Mrs Zernike just did.
Lawyer if if there is not a retraction.
I sorry that's Defination 2:b not 2:a
Jason, I grew up in NYC as well, I heard your speech and almost literally fell off my chair laughing when I heard what the NYT scum said about it.
Keep up the fight, brotha! (My parents are from the Dominican Republic and I get a chuckle when a "progressive" calls me a racist. Half my family is dark skinned and some would be mistaken for "african-american" until you heard them speak in an Hispanic accent.)
RACE matters most to the left and always will. The Census will be starting March, if you don't fill in your race they will send a worker to your address to "view" and identify your race themselves. We have not gotten past the race thing because it's a tool for the left to get anything and everthing they want and need.
Everyone should write the "Public Editor" of the NYT here: http://topics.nytimes.com/top/opinion/thepubliced...
This is the guy that can issue the retraction. Send him an email NOW
Great speech Jason. I wish you'd written the Mt. Vernon statement.
Why so Socialist Zernicke and NYT?
You were NIFONGED, pure a simple. That's what they do to discredit their opponents and advance their socialist agenda. NIFONGING someone is a hate crime. We will hold them accountable.
That was a great speech, thank you for doing it. You are indeed owed a big apology and retraction from the NYT and their racist reporter Zernicke.
Michael NIFONG, was of course, the DUKE rape case prosecutor who continued the case despite contrary evidence.
NIFONGING is a great word and needs to be resurrected.
.
What would be funny, if not exactly legal (I don't actually know), if someone made a website called New York Times Reader Comments Blog. All the blog would be is links to NYT stories, and comments. But the kicker: the site wouldn't delete comments critical of the NYT and libs! It would be like a clearinghouse, a place to leave comments on NYT articles for other pepole to read that wouldn't normally even be printed at the NYT site! What a void that would fill, what an untapped market!
I tell you, sometimes I oughta just get paid for waking up.
Like my yesterday's guaranteed moneymaker, "National Newspaper that Actually Prints Truth", come on, you know that's a great idea – nobody's done it before!, the New York Times Reader Comments Blog is a SUREFIRE win.
Eventually they will tax accents and dialects. (But it will be illegal to speak with a southern accent)
Anybody with a Bruklin' accent should just stop buying the NYTimes!
Great blog! O is the only one eligible to use the Negro dialect.
We need to understand that the people of the New York Times are our betters. We are not in the same social class as they are and must take what they say as true, whether or not it jibs with the reality we see. People that speak in a regional accent are obviously uneducated rubes who's parents were brother and sister. Jason is simply a thug that should shut up and go back to working on the docks with his fellow d*goes.
/Sarc
That speech was great Jason. "the old grey lady" died long ago. To be slandered by the NYT is proof of "integrity above and beyond the call of citizenship,,," I suggest an award maybe the "Bronx Star" ?
of all the newspaper staff being laid off over the past few years, the only one at the new york times with a safe jb would seem to be the guy who crushes dissent on the comment threads.
Truth from the New York Times died in the Gulags.
Also from the South, here. The worst (and totally casual, BTW) racism I ever personally encountered was in Massachusetts. Jason and Breitbart are right: it's time to take back the streets from the swaggering "progressives" with their careless bigotry. It is indeed time to punch back "twice as hard."
You should sue for libel. Seriously, this was a lbelous statement.
Who is Chris Rock?
Sorry for the cluelessness.
I, like most New Yorkers, have a discernable speech pattern, a reality that shouldn’t come as a surprise to an employee of the New York Times.
To me, this is the most important point. A reporter for the New York Times, based in New York City, can't recognize a New York accent. The paper of record, indeed.
Jason, I am thankful for Zernike's comments, because without them, I probably would never have watched your speech. Brother, that was an AMAZING speech. You are obviously a greatly talented young man who has, and will continue, to accomplish great things.
Zernike is a whole lot like the liberal sportswriters who delight in cutting down athletes because they could never in a million years hope to accomplish anything even close to the hard working and talented athletes of whom they write. Do not discount the power of jealousy or the role that it is playing in this particular drama.
Thank you for your efforts. You obviously have a way with young folks, and that drives the Liberal-Progressives absolutely crazy. They act like they own the youth vote, but in all things they are extremely insecure. I don't know if this is their first salvo against you, but certainly, it won't be their last. Keep the faith, brother.
I wonder how come Kate Zernike didn't call Hillary Clinton(D) a racist for her condescending southern accent employed to manipulate black audiences she was stooping to deliver Pandercakes?
Never forget, the Slimes shilled for Stalin and covered up his crimes as he murdered 20+ million people.
The NY Slimes shilled for Hitler before the war, and put the Holocaust on the back pages.
The NY Slimes shilled for Mao and covered up his crimes as he murdered 50+ million people.
The NY Slimes shilled for Castro and covered up his crimes as he enslaved Cuba.
The NY Slimes shilled (and continues to shill) for the radical environmentalists as their DDT ban has kiled tens of millions of people of color.
When you know of a crime and cover it up, you are guilty of it, too.
The NY Slimes is guilty of genocide, of murdering more than 100 million people, and conservatives should point this out at EVERY opportunity.
A black comedian of limitless talent and a very singular style of speaking.
He is quite funny, if you can get past the foul language. Much of his act revolves around issues of race or sex, but often it is difficult to see exactly where he stands on things. He can get away with saying things that no one else on earth could.
Zeinike has done all three of her readers a great disservice by slandering Jason's speach. They just don't know it.
The ONLY reason I read anything from the Times is simply to stay abreast of what sort of jounalistic excrement they have recently issued. How can any one group of people (Times employees) be so brain dead? If that isn’t the problem then there is a much more serious issue at hand. I live on the west coast and I don’t read the papers here, either for the same reason. You just don’t get news, you get some cockamamie left-wing take on just about everything with which they come into contact. The same with network news and a lot of cable organizations. I needn’t name them.
You got Borked.
Hmmm…. I wonder if shes' even familiar with what *Chris Rock* sounds like. Maybe that was just the first black comedian whose name came to mind when she was doing he typing assignment…
That would be weird since Goebbels learned propaganda from the Progressives in the U.S.
Shared on FB, Tweeted it and signed up at http://www.jasonmattera.com. How DARE Zernike accuse you, one of the greatest guys I know in cyberspace, who makes me laugh and brings me truth, of racism. This fake racism cry is an insult to anyone who really has been a victim of racism and you don't throw that horrible hateful word around lightly, MS. ZERNIKE!
And another thing MS. ZERNIKE, Jason Mattera is VERY loved in the Conservative world and I am sure by many Independents and even Democrats because of the great guy he is. Be ashamed of yourself Ms. Zernike!
What goes around, comes around!
NYT worst fishwrap on the planet
Yes, thinking the same thing! That Mrs. Clinton piece was painful!
If that's true, then I'm making come for me! Too bad I don't still live in N. Idaho!
This is classic projection. They should use this clip in Psych 101 classes at community colleges. Obviously, Kate is the type of person who clutches her purse tightly whenever she sees a Black man on the sidewalk near her. I'd lay money on it. Because she's basically a crypto-racist herself, she will find racism in people all around her, as they say things she thinks sound "negro" or whatever. I am SO tired of having conservatives labeled racists by people who cannot stop themselves from thinking in terms of racialist categories.
thank you for "myrmidons." I looked it up, what an excellent word!
So Zernike is DICRIMINATING against those with a NY accent now?? WOW I know ALLLLLLLOT of people who will be quite OFFENDED by her assertions!
I remember laughing my *ss off to your DNC convention videos on youtube. There's no doubt about it that you have a Brooklyn accent. Keep up the good work!
Who the heck is Kate Zernike?
How about the editors who edited — or approved — the headline with racial in it? It's systemic not individual to the reporter. The news & editorial staff who let such dreck pass muster to make the paper are the real scoundrels. Who can balme a line reporter for writing what her bosses wanted to read? She's got a future in this biz, at least as long as the NYT stays in bidniz.
I doubt that the reporter for the NY Times has ever been to Brooklyn, and even less that she would know what a Brooklyn accent sounds like. I agree with the previous poster: it is a classic case of projection.
What is is with the left and lies? i guess they figure if they pile enough of them on we'll lose track of the Truth. That certainly seems to be the Obama way.
Obama Newspeak? The system worked, he can't pass his radical BS, therefore the system is broken.
so i guess it kinda of ‘you are light skinned and you speak in negro dilaect even when you dont want to!; kind of thing. hey dude, grab harry reid. he could take you far. these idiots are truly sick.
Better be careful using that Hispanic (racial) slang in the next to last sentence.
While some of us may understand the "nuances" and differences, the NYT may not appreciate being out of the loop.
@ Jason – According to her standards (and the NYT's non-standards), is it racist for what appears to be a white woman to call a Hispanic a racist?
Just curious, as it may help better understand the Progressives and their continual suffering from CRIS.
I plan to write in "American" as my race.
IOW Progressives! LOL Unfortunately your sarcasm is their reality (dream).
or send the NYT a Bronx cheer!
Tell me about it!
I moved to Michigan from Brooklyn, where I was born and raised, over 20 years ago, and people still ask me if I'm EYEtalian. "How could you tell?", I always ask (knowing the answer).
"From your accent", they answer.
Always cracks me up.
I guess I should be offended?
Or maybe they should be?
Am I misleading them?
Maybe Robert DeNiro should be offended that I sound like him?
I'm soooooo confused….
Yep, good point, Flame.
How the supposedly "most cosmopolitan" newsrag in the world can be so out-of-touch with 90% of the folks who live in NYC is incomprehensible.
Unless, we realize that THEY DON"T CARE about the 90% – they are living in an effete, "elite", liberal circle-jerk fantasy world…
Keep on brother! I think Obama himself is racist in his dialect! I mean, c'mon, have you EVER heard anyone sound WHITER?? We're " Not gonna fall for the banana in the tail-pipe "!
As a Texan, I suppose she would accuse me of president baiting when my dialect sounds like George Bush. That would REALLY get the gray lady staff in a snit posture.
Speaking of books and The NYT, have you heard that there is a movement afoot to separate out the Conservative bestsellers from the NYT Bestsellers list?
I shit you not:
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/jeff-poor/2009/11/10...
That right there is about all you need to know about liberals.
Sore loser fascist little wienies.
Here is how conservatives (I) think. I was reading and rather enjoying Mr. Materra's article here not realizing or caring that he was "Puerto Rican" (Latino) until he himself mentioned it. Guess what? I still don't care. This guy is great, please write more.
Don't you feel sorry for that scapegoat – I mean "ombudsman"? No matter what he (or she; I don't keep track!) says, he (or she) will never actually accomplish any kind of resolution, much less change. What a depressing, unsatisfying, heck, soulless job!
"Zernike, who must consider herself some kind of dialect expert, attempted to tarnish my name and stigmatize …"
So Zernike emulates the dialect expert Harry Reid who was impressed by Obama's abilitiy to change how he talks, speaking either Ivy league or "negro dialect". Democrats are so racially bigoted, never studying the quality of a person's character; only their PC appropriate dialect(s).
The old grey lady has been dead in the soul for many decades. It is time that that rotting liberal corpse got buried.
Guess what?
I have spent a number of weeks tilting at the windmills of insanity over at the Huffing Post – not to mention titillating my gag reflex and courting a major spew reading substantial numbers of posts by the KOS kiddies.
I long ago realized that the Moonbat Swarm has utter faith that anyone who doesn't gleefully wrap their lips around the collective phallus's of PharoObama and the entire Commiecrat cabal is a racist, subhuman, neo-Nazi, sexist, proto-rapist who needs to be lobotomized, sterilized, and eventually euthanized when that person can no longer work off his or her debt to the masses they have oppressed by the crime of breathing out CO2..
My father grew up in Brooklyn. I grew up watching the Bowery Boys. Zernike needs to put down her Evian and quiche and spend a little time in Brooklyn listening instead of talking, which for her seems unlikely.
Dis is faw da boids.
Excellent piece, you're a really fine young man and I admire you. This article is excellent too. It's too bad you can't come out and say it but I'll just write as a reminder that ZERNIKE'S EDITOR Wants to SLANDER CONSERVATIVES every chance they get. And Obama is half black so if you're going to make something up you might as well call em a racist, every single time.
WARNING!!! This post can be dangerous to your health. PEOPLE WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE OR FAMILY HEART HISTORY SHOULD NOT PARTAKE.
For the brave…who want to learn about the miscreants that inhabit the world of the NY Slimes…
http://community.nytimes.com/comments/thecaucus.b...
Read the comments….
…on toidy toid street. ; )
The NYT is just another zombie and may not know what a retraction is; however, judging by their financial and layoff problems, they certainly know what pink slips are!
They have honed their skills since early 20-ties, at least, long before Goebbels. Then, they had Walter Durant report in glowing terms on the wonders of the Stalin's Soviet Union. They even got a Pulitzer prize for that reporting. Just sayin'.
another race card thrown?
thats reall hard to believe.
(sarc)
This site performs a very useful service, and it sounds like Mattera's book will as well.
The light has been turned on these cockroaches, and we should track their escape and seal up their holes, because they'll be out again when it's dark. It's what they do.
The NY Times is a traitorous disgrace.
Thanks for replying. It does say a lot, lol, particularly about that progressive crowd.
It's kinda funny the way it fits to a tee.
Too funny — However, you're right as right can be, at the same time.
Good point!
I forget my history, thanks for pointing that out. I wonder how great American would be today if our press had not become propanganda machines for the progressive/socialism message?
You make a great point, one of the really tragic consequences of the Times corruption.
I did the same-looked up the word myrmidons . I'll use it now if you don't mind!
Soyt'nly, as they say in Joyzee, Noo Joyzee, that is.
May I also lend you this ball peen hammer, in case you ever need to knock some sense into one of them there progressives?
No, seriously, these media types with their smear and implications — they infuriate me. There was nothing there for this reporter to criticize on merit, and she could've just said so, or said nothing. But, no. That's not the NYT way. So, made something of nothing and presented it to all her lucky readers. That is some low-life BS.
Thank you for the kind words. I can't wait for us to take back our country.
There has got to be an attorney out there who will take a pro bono slander suit against the NYSlimes. Even if it goes nowhere, at least they will be put on notice that their crap will not be tolerated anymore. Conservatives need to go on the offensive a la Andrew Breitbart vs. Max(ine) Blumenthal.
"The New York Times Is A Comic Book".
I watched your speech and found nothing racist in it. The real trouble is the baby boomer spent their youth cheating on learning true intellect, then went on to spawn children and grand children and taught them to cheat in the same way. True education and intellectualism is not for the lazy, and they are lazy. Another problem they have is they have no strife in their life to overcome, except what is self created and romanticized. Their parents and grand parents had world wars and economic crisis' that would bring most to their knees. What have they got? NOTHING!
Any paper whose house "conservative" is the bird-brained David Brooks is fit only for lining bird cages.
http://libertyatstake.blogspot.com/
Lawyer here, and I second the suggestion of the commenter upthread who advised consulting an attorney about a defamation action if no retraction is issued. Sadly, it may take the threat of a lawsuit to shake the Gray Lady into doing the right thing; I doubt that she'll think that what's posted on a lowly new-journalism site on the even-more-lowly Internet is worthy of her notice.
Great speech, Jason. Really, you should have expected these kneejerk slanders and defamations as soon as you decided to speak at CPAC. Consider the source, and thank God you're not one of them.
as someone who is already highly jaundiced towads the MSM, it was STILL shocking to such a BLATANT Fabrication.. usually there's some tiny grain which is misconstrued, then amplified beyond all reality…
What has been the NYT response. (I WON''T HOLD MY BREATH)
Chill, Jason; more people just read your story here on BigJournalism than the smear in the NYT!
Keep the faith!
Actually, I think it's pretty likely that this will result in a correction and clarification from the Times, along with an apology from Zernike. You may think it'll be a cold day in hell — I actually think it'll be in the next couple of days.
That's certainly not because I have any great love for the Times. I just think it's the way this will play out. The offense was too blatant and egregious.

Putas y putos.
I particularly liked this one:
"These folks have no ideas, no policy proposals, no solutions, and they are left with all that they are good at – name calling – disgraceful."
This in regards to an article which is nothing but an exercise in — you got it — NAME CALLING!
The Left exploits victims of racism to further their political agenda. They care nothing about the offense itself, only exploiting latent rage to their own ends.
Identity politics is being used to dilute individual liberty. Rascism is a ploy to propagate rifts in the social fabric, compromising the individual at the by way of the collective. It’s a red herring.
Mr. Mattera, if it's makes you feel better I will be buying your book when it releases. Any writer, author or speaker the NY Times bashes is worthy of my hard earned cash. Where that target loud and proud "my brotha"……
Awesome speech Jason. Zernike knows that you are a threat so coming up with cheap shots holds true to the leftist agenda. Keep up the good work, stay radical, its intimidating to the liberals!.
[...] Leave it to a left-wing reporter from the New York Times to read a racist message into Mattera’s inspiring talk. Secure in the knowledge that her readers would never see Mattera’s talk and realize that her characterization was a fantasy, Times reporter Kate Zernike accused Mattera of racism: [...]
Amazingly, the origins and purpose of all this chaos are predicted and accounted for in the best selling, prophetic, political Conspiracy Thriller book, BLACK ROAD 2012, which I bought on amazon, and was a real goose-bumpy, totally absorbing ride: http://tinyurl.com/amazon-BLACK-ROAD-2012
Reasonable people realize the old york times is a progressive , elitist rag that hasn’t reported the news in an unbiased fashion since Walter Duranty received the pulitzer for kissing Stalins butt way back in the 30’s. I hope Pinchy doesn’t change a thing because he is completing the demise of that yellow rag.
I am looking forward to the day when the New York Times paychecks to their reporters start to bounce. Then, the value of their reporting will truly be realized.
Employees of the New York Times frequently hear racism in their heads. This was just like when Maureen Dowd clearly "heard" Joe Wilson say "You lie, boy!" to Obama.
However, can we put an end to the silly statement that there is nothing worse to be accused of than racism? There are many things worse: Treason, murder, and child molestation are just a few that immediately come to mind. Given that the race card is being played constantly these days at the slightest perceived provocation, being accused of racism is becoming commonplace–and therefore losing its power. We live in a time where criticizing Michelle Obama's taste in clothes is labeled racism, so no, being accused of it is hardly the worst thing that can happen to anyone.
Note to Kate Zernike:
If you really want to hear someone doing a bad African-American accent, listen to Hillary Clinton in this pathetic video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGDm4jkDbGQ
Notice how her voice deepens, slows down and attempts to sound black and Southern when she says, "Ah don't feel no ways tah-erd … I've come too fawrrrrr … "
Show me any evidence that Kate or anybody else at The New York Times objected to THAT channeling.

I gotcha back too. I have been tackling this issue over and over.
The only way to defeat this thing is to blog about it.
It is a syndrome. I know you are not a racist, they taught us to be toLLLLLLLLLLLerant of minorities, even if it meant the demise of America
Oh, BTW.. "THATS RACIST!!" What I said LOL.
XOXOX Jason, hang in there.
Where were the NYTimes headlines blaring: “Hillary Clinton Bashes Obama, in Racial Tones” when she was campaigning against him in black churches and copping a “black” dialect?
The question answers itself.

As a fellow Puerto Rican – born and raised in the island – with first and second cousins that speak with Bronx accents and a niece with a Long Island accent -, you are so right on target!
Zernike stepped on a big one. Her ignorance speaks volumes! What would she think if she hears my female boricua English? She will probably think I'm mocking my own people, too! She obviously has not spent a day or two speaking with the people who live in NY. I live in Texas, though – will she call me a racist because I live and speak among "racist" Texans?
The NYT map of the United States must look like that old poster from the New Yorker: Manhattan as the Center of the World, with Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island looking like an islet before the Pond, and then you watch England from your house (!). And America beyond Manhattan is a foreign country to them! Some things never change, I guess.
You'd think reporters for the NYT would understand what the people of NY are about… right? Right? (Not holding my breath for those patricians!)
If David Brooks is "Conservative", then I'm the Prime Minister of England!
Hey hiplainsdrifter,
I think the name fits you well. But its more like max drifter.

IT WOULD INSULT THE DOG POOP.
[...] My alleged “Chris Rock” voice is actually the way I sound every day. You can’t make this stuff up. http://bigjournalism.com/jmattera/2010/02/22/the-new-york-times-should-terminate-character-assassin-... [...]
