I have written here several times recently about the all too visible partisanship of the Washington Post, but Karen Tumulty’s lead article on Sunday (August 8), “In Va.’s 5th, incumbent Democrat Tom Perriello sees voter frustration firsthand,” takes the cake. Or perhaps it’s simply that as a resident and voter in Virginia’s 5th District I can see her slant more clearly and hence resent it more.

Her bias appears right away:
CHARLOTTE COURT HOUSE, VA. — The crowds that have been showing up for Democratic Rep. Tom Perriello’s town halls have been smaller and more polite than the angry throngs he saw during last August’s raucous congressional recess.
Catcalls about socialism and death panels have given way to substantive and pointed questions — about the intricacies of the new health-care law and financial regulations, finding alternative energy sources, and that most perennial of Virginia problems, traffic.
Gale-force outrage — both the real kind and the kind manufactured for television — has faded this August. There is still the occasional outburst: On Saturday, the Lynchburg Tea Party Patriots hastily called a rally outside a Perriello town hall in Fork Union to demand that he vote against $26 billion in aid to state and local governments when the House reconvenes briefly this week.
But when the shouting dies down, it becomes possible to hear something else, something Democrats know is an even greater threat to them this fall.
With polls consistently showing that dissatisfaction with Washington is at or near record levels, another word for what voters are feeling right now might be “frustration,” or “despair,” or “disgust.”
Tumulty — who was recently identified as a member of the infamous JournoList — argues, in short, that crazed, irrational anger has given way to polite expressions of frustration, an argument that marries bias to bad reporting. Democrats and mainstream media editorial writers (is there a difference?) are of course free to regard the angry opposition to Obamacare and massive deficits that was expressed in town halls across the district and nation last August as akin to the baying of mad dogs frothing at the mouth, but such anathema to tea partiers should at least be restrained in news articles.
I attended a couple of those town halls in the 5th District last summer. Many of those who attended were certainly angry, but to dismiss them as “angry throngs” capable only of “catcalls” is to ignore their very well informed questions of a Congressman who had clearly made a choice to be an ambassador from Nancy Pelosi to the 5th District rather than vice versa.
Tumulty, a former writer for Time Magazine, does allow that not all of the “gale-force outrage” of last August was paranoid bile; some of it, she asserts, was simply political play-acting, “the kind manufactured for television.” Where, however, is her evidence that any of the anger expressed last summer was “manufactured”?
Tumulty believes the “outrage” has faded, but that’s because she’s only looking where the light’s good — in Perriello’s town hall meetings this summer, not where she might actually find it. Why should the “angry throngs” continue to attend his meetings when they can instead spend their time supporting his opponent in an election only a few months away?
And note how she describes an example of what she argues is residual and fading anger as an “occasional outburst” — a rally “hastily called” by the Lynchburg Tea Party “to demand that [Perriello] vote against $26 billion in aid to state and local governments when the House reconvenes briefly this week.” But why is expressed opposition to piling on more deficits to prop up more public employee union members an “outburst”? If a number of people showed up (she could have told us how many were there, but didn’t) even though the rally was “hastily called,” doesn’t that suggest that the tide of angry voters has not really receded very much?
Perhaps the mood of voters who still care enough about what Perriello has to say to attend his meetings “might be ‘frustration,’ or ‘despair,’ or ‘disgust,’” but if Tumulty had attended some of the rallies or meetings with voters of state senator Robert Hurt, Perriello’s Republican opponent, she would have seen that last summer’s anger has not “faded” at all.

They used to get away with calling this stuff "objective journalism." I wonder where Tumulty and her colleagues in the increasingly irrelevant so-called "mainstream media" go to express their anger and frustration about the fact that more and more American citizens are ignoring their punditry. Thank God for the internet!
See you on 8-28 Karen – liar and racism projector.
What else do you expect from these hacks. Progressive/Socialist reporting on illegal immigration and G-8 riot,,,,errrrrr…. peaceful protesters interested in social justice, Black crooked politicians as victims of racism, terrorist are freedom fighters, and the economy is rosy when it sucks under a democrat, yet in the same breath, report family gatherings are rioters, Christian Church leaders are advocating terror, not being a racist makes you a racist (unless your a black panther, Acorn or Shirly Sherrod, then your a freedom fighter), and the economy that hummed along (avg. rate under Bush 3.5% and GDP grew) as the worst economic times EVAH!!! See the pattern???
Now I am a simple Italian Girl from NYC, but I know if someone is trying to sell me oregano and tells me it is some good weed, I call them out for BSing.
The MSM keeps passing these tired retreads among themselves. TIME and the Washington Post are both in trouble (circulation, ad dollars, stock prices), but they keep hiring Journalistas more interested in perpetuating a narrative than reporting a story objectively.
Good riddance.
If these people are not made to be accountable for their conduct they will continue to act this way. Their participation in the journolist conspiracy was an organized criminal activity by which they gained at the expense of others. That means this should at least be considered by a grand jury in each case and where conspiracy, RICO, wire fraud, election fraud or violations of FCC statutes have occurred, the appropriate criminal sanctions need to be levied.
Obviously they have all attended the "Furrowed Brow 101" offered at j-school.
One of my family members attended a town hall meeting last year and said the entire thing was pleasant and informative. It was the first time she'd ever been impressed with Periello and she called his office to compliment him. She admonished him not to vote for the Health Care debacle, but told his staff member that she appreciated the professional way the meeting was run. She reported no outbursts or even talking-over. Just an exchange of opinion and information.
Doesn't sound like a lot of seething to me. Tumulty sure seems like a nasty little liar. Sorry, maybe that will be read as "gale-force outrage", but it's not. It's just an observation calmly put forth.
Who manufactures this anger? Are they listed on NASDAQ? Business has been good the last 15 or so months. Maybe I'd like to buy a few shares. When is the IPO?
Angry protests are promoted by the hypocritical liberal media as a virtue if they're for liberal causes. I hate it for her, but we're just getting started!
Newsweek ("We're all Socialists Now") just folded, while conservative magazines like Newsmax are having a record year for subscriptions.
Refuse to watch them on tv, the radio or purchase the print that they surface in…….force them into retirement.
These MainStream journalists are so pathetic once they can no longer hide behind their biases and pretend objectivity.
No longer are they on the high moral ground of objective public service, they are simply bad actors. Devious. Shallow. Mean spirited. Pathetic clowns. Love it.
“angry throngs” capable only of “catcalls”
Which was no doubt a reaction to their Representative being an obedient servant to Pelosi capable of only dancing around the questions or delivering the party's approved line of bullsh*t.
Tumulty, a former Kool-Aide Distributor at Time Magazine
It's the Elites against America. November is our LAST CHANCE to save the Republic.
They must pass out knee pads with the KoolAid when these people overpay for JournoList School.
If you guys want a good laugh, go read the comments on the HuffPo about Obama getting mad at the left… its amazing to watch all the progressive dems melt down and smack their Messiah around, great fun to be had:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/robert-l-borosage/g...
I thought all the JournaListas were male, young, nerdy, weird, slave-ishly Socialist..
I guess Karen is their Statist granny figure…
We need to start looking to people like Brietbart to buy out these newspapers as they go broke. Go conservative, but tell the truth. That's how you can make money nowadays.
Pulitzer was a grand progressive.
Brietbart, will you lead the new set of reporters to a more honest kind of truth? Will you lay down rules for objectively handling news as a true seeker and an honest reporter?
Why not buy the New York Times in a hostile takeover. Remove the slant, and you'll have the money of a sultan.
I love this quote from the UK Telegraph:
"While the liberal-dominated US mainstream media have largely ignored the story, it is all over the blogosphere and talk radio, and will undoubtedly add to the President’s free falling poll ratings. As much as the media establishment turn a blind eye to stories like this, which are major news in the international media, the American public is increasingly turning to alternative news sources, including the British press, which has a far less deferential approach towards the White House."
See the full article at: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/nilegardiner/10...
So even the international press can see the incompetence and bias of the U.S. media, yet our msm still maintains they are "objective". How many more people have to point out the msm bias for it to finally sink in? Alas, politically liberal ideologues in our mainstream press will NEVER give up their opportunity to use their positions to influence politics in the U.S. This is all these small people have, they have no integrity, their pay can't be going up when their circulation is going down. So they try to throw elections to the Democrats.
Ms.Tumulty needs to leave the rarified air of Cafe Milano and actually talk to the people – you know, the ones who are actually working and being productive, or the ones who are out of work because of the Congress and it's Dear Leader.
Tumulty? No, that's Ruth Buzzy from "Laugh IN". She will hit someone over the head with her baggy purse any moment. She is so sad and outdated not to realize that the MSM has been passed up. We the people are not print fools any longer. We have our new sources of info and their BS is exposed almost as fast as they can shovel it.
She jumped from one sinking ship (Time) to another (WaPo). Soon she will disappear for good.
Great post … thoroughly awful reporting for all the reasons you cite. Par for the course, alas.
In a way she has a point. I attended numerous Tea Parties but no longer do. I have also cut down on my news intake. It isn't though that I am calmer. I simply could not take in much more of the corruption and subsequent aggravation gushing forth from this completely corrupt regime. I now more or less wait quietly for November and spread my dislike for the dems/progressives/marxists when and where possible. I will vote them out in November. If they resist leaving and find some "emergency" necessitating the cancellation of the elections or some how manage to pervert their route into a stolen election, which I do not put past this arrogant marxist who would be king, the are other ways for the citizenry to make it's dissatisfaction known.
Tumulty, like so many Progressives, are simply incapable of accepting that any opinion that runs contrary to their worldview is valid. Hence when citizens are angry because their supposed representative ignores them and votes against their interest, it is obvious they must be ignorant racist and worse. The Left who made an industry out of manufactured protests (with the full collusion of the media) are incapable of believing that a true grassroots protest is not another made for television protest (Nancy Pelosi expressed just this sentiment with her "astroturf" comment".;) The Left simply cannot accept honest disagreement because they are behaving as juveniles and should be treated accordingly. The one caution is that they can be extremely dangerous when cornered.
It is amusing to watch the Brits with their socialist views laughing at the sorry state of what we are told is journalism.
What a vile hack. Prostitution for political purposes is whoring nonetheless.
Can't buy the NY Times, but I wonder if someone could have bought Newsweek. I'm thinking conservative entrepreneurs ran the numbers and decided it was too big a risk with too little pay-off. Although I wonder if the Post would have sold it to a conservative. Their ideology obviously trumps all.
She can write fiction so well I'm surprised Halaquin Romance hasn't signed her to a contract.
These losers get more transparent with their BS everyday and as the pressure mounts their BS gets louder even more outlandish. They're losing the debate – two words for this incompetent – Go Away!
I think I saw her riding a bicycle with a doggy in a basket attached to the front handle bars in an old black and white film. What was the name of that film………The Wizard on Nairobi or something like that.
which is scheduled right after "Marxism for Dummies 3101 (books and material supplied – the state provides)"…
den mother/odd source of *facinantion* – as in – "icky – a girl!"
…"and your little dog, too!"
Maybe we can liquidate her.
Last summer we called for these representatives to turn away from the Obama/Reid/Pelosi agenda. I think that message was very clear. Those like Perriello chose to ignore it and proudly cast their votes in defiance of the voters.
Why waste the breath this summer?
One of Murphy's Laws of Combat states that if things seem to be going too well, it's probably an ambush. Put that under things for progressives to ponder until November!
This woman looks like a praying mantis – or is it just me?
I'd like to see that happen as well. But with the chinless wonder Eric Holder at DOJ, there's a better chance that I'll be struck by a giant meteorite.
Newsmax may very well be a solid conservative magazine. But I'm kind of leery when their television commercial touts "great conservative writers" like Kathleen Parker.
Just one more Kool-Aide ADDICT. Soon to be returned to the closet of failure and shame.
It's pathetic that Karen Tumulty is the closest thing we have to a radical leftist today. Whatever happened to the Trotskyites?
… Oh, I forgot. They all became Neoconservatives. Silly me!
