In a recent column, Paul Krugman admitted to having fun watching “right-wingers go wild.” One of the things that apparently delighted him was this map, which Sarah Palin posted on her Facebook page:
Each of the cross-hairs represents a Democrat from a conservative district who voted in favor of health reform. Immediately after highlighting the map, Krugman wrote:
All of this goes far beyond politics as usual…you’ll search in vain for anything comparably menacing, anything that even hinted at an appeal to violence, from members of Congress, let alone senior party officials….to find anything like what we’re seeing now you have to go back to the last time a Democrat was president.
Really, Paul? I’ll search in vain?
The map appears on this page of the Democratic Leadership Committee website (dated 2004 during the Bush years). I guess we could argue over whether the DLC counts as “senior party officials” but they’re certainly as much a part of the party as Palin who, after all, currently holds no elected office.
Granted these are bulls-eyes instead of gun-sights, and the targets are states not individual congressmen. But we’re really splitting hairs at this point. This map and the language it uses (Behind enemy lines!) are, if anything, more militant than what Palin used in her Facebook posting.

This map is courtesy of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC). Though it’s not dated, it was clearly posted within the last year. Rep. Van Hollen leads the DCCC. He was chosen for the position by Speaker Pelosi herself. Do they count as Democratic leadership? More importantly, how is this different from the map Sarah Palin posted on Facebook?
Paul Krugman used the megaphone of the New York Times to state that Palin’s Facebook map went “far beyond politics as usual.” In fact, nothing about Palin’s map or the language in her Facebook posting goes beyond what Democratic leaders have done in the past year.
Furthermore, when Krugman claimed “you will search in vain for anything comparably menacing… from members of Congress” he was making a factual claim. He didn’t say it was hard to find or rare. He said in effect that it didn’t exist. But since my search for comparable material from Democratic members of Congress was not in vain, the Times should issue a correction noting that Krugman got it wrong.

I suppose back in the Old Media days, you could say something scary like "Tea Party protesters violently assaulted xyz.." and if it was printed, it was taken as truth. Heck Hearst used to deliberately make up news to sell papers. The left keeps relying on what USED to work. But with new technology, everyone is a a journalist, we all have access to pretty much the same info. Also, when so many people have video cameras in their cell phones, you just can't make stuff up, especially in large gatherings like a Tea Party protest, where the entire thing is being filmed by different people. If you make an allegation that someone spit on someone, guess what, if they did–it's on tape. Then you get tired of people demanding evidence and back off of your allegation.
So now you've got liberals saying that the right is inciting violence by putting cross hairs on election maps. Maybe in the old days, people would just assume that's the way it was, and indeed the noble democrats would never do such a thing. OOPS! Google to the rescue.

The New York Times seems to be speaking only to the idiots that (still) occupy New York. Their reporting has not had national significance in quite some time, except that the MSM seems to believe it and repeat it.
It's sad that Krugman has abandoned any pretense of doing any actual research for a piece and just uses the once-great NY Times as a platform to write his paranoid delusional screeds picked from the dark corners of his leftist cliche stockroom of a brain. It isn't just his fault; last I heard, the Times still has editors whose job used to be to insist on accuracy in a story, be it grammatical or factual. But since the Times itself long ago stopped being a newspaper and more of a bloated self-important election pamphlet for the DNC, I guess it's understandable. The only way in which it is the 'newspaper of record' is that it sounds like a broken record- harping on the same memes, same misinformation, same unfounded conclusions and same pre-determined results of a story every day. Krugman, Thomas Friedman, Maureen Dowd, all these people draw deeply from the same well of Kool-Aid, and the echo chamber that well produces has become increasingly obvious the deeper they descend into it. These people could all be interchangeable and no none would know the difference, with the exception that neither Friedman or Krugman seems to whine about the other sex as much as Dowd does. Otherwise, they all represent a distinction without a difference. The good news is, I no longer have to read anything they have to say, as it has become as predictable as the break of day. The fact that it is easily dismissed by factual refutation does not mean it is not effective in its intent. They are playing the game of 'death by a thousand cuts', and every piece of mud they throw on the wall is meant to impact on some independent voter somewhere, no matter how subconciously.
