Greg Sargent is a Washington Post blogger and compromised JournoList hack whose “Plum Line” entries are decidedly left of center. Greg was overwhelmed with enthusiasm last Friday when, for a brief but shining moment, it appeared President Obama was supporting the construction of the ground zero mosque. He gushed that it would “go down as one of the finest moments of his presidency.”

Former Cathedral of St. Sophia, now a mosque
Sargent contrasted Obama’s bold stance with the “clever little dodge” which some Republicans were using. Here’s his description of the conservative stance, “The group has the right to build the center, runs this argument, but they are wrong to exercise it.”
That was Friday. On Saturday, the President gave an impromptu response to a reporter’s question, which went like this:
I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there. I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding.
This struck a lot of people as very similar to the distinction made by conservatives, i.e. a legal and religious right to build does not equate to a good (or wise) idea. The only real difference is that President Obama refused to take sides on the crucial issue. In effect, he voted present on the wisdom question.
Needless to say, this came as a big disappointment to Sargent, who was quick to argue that Obama’s clarification was not a walkback:
The “clarification” today would be a walkback if he had previously “endorsed” the project in the sense of declaring it a good idea. But he never “endorsed” it in that sense…Rather, Obama’s “endorsement” of the project consisted entirely of a declaration that now that the group has decided to proceed, American ideals demand that we welcome and respect such people in situations like these. He hasn’t backed off that core assertion. Nor is it contradicted by a refusal to comment directly on the “wisdom” of the project itself.
Question: If a conservative grants that mosque builders have a legal right to do what they want with their own property, isn’t that a commitment to respect their decision? Granted it’s a begrudging respect, but isn’t that sometimes appropriate? Would Sargent welcome the Klan’s decision to march down Broadway? How about the despicable Westboro Baptist Church’s decision to protest gay funerals?
We can of course argue about whether the Cordoba mosque is at all similar to these cases (Greg Gutfeld effectively made some allusions to the latter group), but the point is we don’t always have to welcome every choice that is legal with open arms.

Great Mosque at Cordoba, now a Cathedral
Rather than admit the obvious, Sargent goes into panic mode over the political hay that Republicans are making of Obama’s comments. He quotes Josh Marshall from Talking Points Memo approvingly:
We’re in a midst of a spasm of nativist panic and raw and raucous appeals to race and religious hatred. What affect this will have on the November election strikes me as not particularly relevant. What’s important is compiling some record of what’s afoot, some catalog for understanding in the future who was responsible and who was so willing to disgrace their country and their principles for cheap advantage.
Put aside Josh Marshall’s gleeful swiping of the race card (I wonder if that thing has a spending limit). Exactly four hours later, another one of those despicable politicians “willing to disgrace their country and their principles for cheap advantage” made an appearance on Sargent’s blog:
Harry Reid is breaking with the President, claiming that while he respects freedom of religion, he’s not willing to support an Islamic center near Ground Zero…This just makes the Dems look weak, unorganized, cowardly, and unwilling to take a stand for principles they plainly believe in.
Reid is definitely not one of those taking a stand on principle. But like the President most Americans can find daylight between what is legal and what is wise. Not so for Greg Sargent. You either welcome the decision to build the mosque or you’re a racist, nativist, weak, cowardly disgrace with no principles. For Sargent (and Marshall), it’s just that black and white.
The irony is palpable. After years of tiresome lectures about the dangers of an us vs. them mentality, the professional left has finally embraced the Zen of cowboy diplomacy.

Mr. Sargent is still recovering from the surgery he had to undergo so he could write those columns and you should be mindful of his reduced capacity. Having his nose surgically removed from Obama's ass was no laughing matter. He has been there so long the New England Journal of Medicine accepted a dissertation that suggested the two were in fact Siamese twins. Another medical miracle to put in the "W" column for the Messiah.
The miracles of Obama just keep on coming.
"The irony is palpable. After years of tiresome lectures about the dangers of an us vs. them mentality, the professional left has finally embraced the Zen of cowboy diplomacy."
I'm going to hurry right over to the safe and check to see if there is any of that Z stuff in my six-shooters…..
In any transaction this contentious, the first rule in any investigation or "good journalism" – like there is any of that left; is to follow the money trail and to find out how the decision-makers and backers are intertwined.
After all, we are talking about New York, and money has a long history of greasing projects.
And to think, the Washington Post PAYS this guy. Why not have him paid by who he actually shills for, the DNC.
This is sooooo rich.
Who woulda thunk that such a seemingly inconsequential thing as a mosque would ignite such a clusterf**k for the dems?
Until "President" Moron opened his mouth and flapped his lips, this issue had basically been fought to a draw. I never really believed the thing would be built, but now "President" Jughead has sealed the deal, hasn't he?
That frigging mosque is dead on arrival, and Obumble has nothing to show for it but 3/4 of the people of this country – including most congressional dems – pissed off at him.
Good going, "President" Urkel!
About that race card. It's way over the limit. Of course with Obama borrowing trillions on the cash card, why shouldn't they keep borrowing on the race card too?
Oops. Don't look now. Chris Christie breaks with rightwing Islamophobes.
"… it would be wrong to so overreact … that we paint Islam with a brush of radical Muslim extremists that just want to kill Americans … ."

This just makes the Dems look weak, unorganized, cowardly, and unwilling to take a stand for principles they plainly believe in.
This statement assumes that Dems have principles, which is an unabashed fallacy. Unless you categorize deceit, racism, and statism as "principles".
Double bagging, it what happens when progressives try and defend each other.
If your are trying to progress, try stop using the infantile "racists, bigots, homophobe, and Islamphobes" jargon and realize other people's opinion is just as relevant as yours.
What would Reagan do?
He'd challenge Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia to open their countries to Christian missionaries and make land available for "Community Centers."
How about rescinding General Order 1 and having beer and a pig roast for the troops?
What's good for the goose…
Remeber, if it furthers their agenda, it's morally strong and principled, if it does not, it's cowardly and racist. Liberals are open to dialogue, as long as you are just agreeing with them.
Its not that the reporter has a point of view that is problematic. He is certainly entitled to his opinion and an open and robust debate is both welcomed and encouraged. However when a "journalist" advanced a point of view behind a sheild of "objectivity" we venture into dangerous waters. This is yet another example of an activist that uses his position to help shape the story as opposed to simply reporting the facts. It strikes me a s a little cowardly to hide behind the unassailble cover of the free press while at the same time lobbing out stink bombs to further ones own ideology. Man up and either join the fight on which ever side you choose or have the disci[line to report objectively. You can't have it both ways.
Those awful doctors! Imagine them gleefully opting to perform a full recto-schnozectomy on poor Mr Sargent so they would get more money from the insurance companies.
Man I could sure use some GOOD news for a change. I sit here and shake my head because of ONE MAN and an ideology, America is gone.
No, everyone else's opinion is way more relevant than "Progressing"'s.
Question: " If a conservative grants that mosque builders have a legal right to do what they want with their own property, isn’t that a commitment to respect their decision?"
Answer: Only if our media elite and our political class, including Obama, grant the same respect to land use decisions by private owners seeking to build their own American dream – including exchange of properties of all sizes between consenting adults.
And imagine, if you will, the comments of President Obama if the proposal werel to build a megachurch of the Christian faith on that same piece of private property.
To spend all of your time re-writing history, explaining the nonsensical and defending the indefensible must be hell for the progressive msm.
Dear, no one here thinks that "Muslim extremists…just want to kill Americans."
We know that Muslims are commanded to kill or convert ALL apostates, regardless of nationality.
Yep, they denied Matt Lauer's claim for the same procedure. Damn their exploitation of the proletariat!
I've reported you to the Regime. You either delete your comment or you are going to a re-education camp. Comrade General-Secretary Obamalev and the People's Security Bureau have their eyes on you. One phone call and you are gone. Don't you dare compare Reagan to Obamalev. Everyone knows Reagan was a traitor who sold out America to the swashbuckling capitalist pigs!
Workers of the world, unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains, the rest of your property, your money, your future, your livelihood, your freedom and your right to breathe… Other than that, communism is great!
Historiphobes deliberately blind themselves to the Islamic custom of erecting megastructures commemorating their military victories, on the very sites commemorated. Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, will do for discussion.
They don't have anything else to do. They don't have an audience or a future…
truer words were never said.
Read down two comments and suck it. Of course you want me to stop using terms like Islamophobe, racist and bigot, because they are demonstrably accurate.
Here, from DontTreadOnMe in reply:
"Dear, no one here thinks that "Muslim extremists…just want to kill Americans."

Now that we have that out of the way, where did I say other's people's opinions are not as relevant as mine? Or did you just make that up?
Tell us, where did you get your doctorate in Islamic studies?
Liberty University? Or from the blogs?
To add one more, the former "Great Mosque at Cordoba, now a Cathedral" was originally the site of the Christian Visigothic church of St. Vincent, which the conquering muslims leveled to build the mosque.
Thanks for proving my point!!

Actually, Hagia Sophia, other than four minarets and some internal work, is still the beautiful Christian structure it was prior the Islamic invasion. Once used as a mosque, Hagia Sophia is a museum, at present. But that could change with a shift in the Turkish government. You never know.
The degree came from 9/11….'Nuff said. Islamophobe ? Yep……
The part of the science that I'm interested in is how the noses get inserted in the first place. That's a mystery that needs solving.
Heh. Those tricky dems. Acting in ways that plainly contradict their deeply held beliefs.
Hmmm, does that mean that the reports of their lack of support for the Mosque are "fake, but accurate" or maybe "real, but inaccurate."
What's a liberal toady to-do?
There's no reason to insult Jughead or Urkel by comparing them to Obama.
Unfortunately that's all they've got on the left. Trust, I've been there.
I believe he already did that. Upon his being sworn in he sent a cake and a Bible to the leaders in Iran.
Agree which is why I canceled my subscription to Time magazine. I refuse to piss away my money on that crap.
The point was, that Hagia Sophia was commandeered by the Sultan as a mosque and monument to his Islamic victory at Constantinople, and remained so for five hundred years in the face of Christian Europe. Only because Mustafa Kemal Ataturk deliberately chucked Islam in favor of secular government did it become a museum, and that 'shift in Turkish government' away from secularism appears to be commencing right now.
Yellow cake doesn't count.
I wasn't trying to 'make a point' just point out some facts.
I don't think this was ever officially admitted to, but the rumor I heard the cake was shaped like a cross.
I wonder where "sargent" Schultz here was on the cross in San diego that the ACLU trie dto have removed, the same one that had been there for over 50 years? Of course, good ole "Sargent" over here would take the side of the enemies of freedom, like him and his perverted pals always do.Good to see that Dopebama pulled the rug from out underneath you "sargent" Bilko. Nice to see you playing Corporal Agarn in Dopebamas F-head troupe, overwise called the JournOlisters. Keep kissing Soros backside "sargent".
You did well. No argument here. We'll both keep an eye on the Erdogan government.
psssst, John; What you called the former Cathedral of St. Sophia is actually the former Patriarchal Basilica Hagia Sophia (Church of the Holy Wisdom – it was named for a concept, not a person. It was dedicated to Logos the second entity of the Holy Trinity (not Christ, for Christ was the physical personification of Logos or "The Word") it's complicated). A Basilica ranks above a cathedral, however During the Latin occupation of Constantinople (1204–1261) the Hagia Sophia became a Roman Catholic cathedral until it returned to the orthodox church when the Romans (called Byzantines by arrogant European amateur historians) recaptured the city. in 1453 Constantinople fell to the ottoman turks who used it as a Mosque until 1935 when it became a museum.
When you are an extremists, left wing minority of 25-30%, your have defend the indefensible.
"Islamophobe, racist and bigot, because they are demonstrably accurate."
You people anger me so much I could scream. You're so blind to the world around you. Instead of disputing the point, you call them "Islamophobes". Quit using your emotional jibber jabber of "tolerance" (a FUNDAMENTALLY flawed ethical stance) as a blindfold and open your eyes for once. This is the real world we live in and not some college dorm room.
Was the statement incorrect, or is this just your passive-aggressive way of pouting when you can't manage a simple argument?
Sorry; you're probably not good with rhetorical questions, either, so we'll just count you as feeble-minded and continue to mock you when you have the temerity to show up here with nothing more than profanity and playground taunts.
lol clever
lmao
lmao
Alinsky would be proud.
Perhaps they could check with Rahm Emanuel. He was there first and then he was able to pull out in time for Matt and company…
The dishonesty that characterizes Greg Sargent's contorted "logic" simply shines a spotlight on the relativist's absence of intellectual standards and moral conscience. While they may begrudgingly nod toward a right to "freedom of speech", the politically correct scions of tolerance would blanch at the "wisdom", let alone "right" to freely use the "n" word, or other proscribed epithets that these supposedly "tolerant" hypocrites apply to poor boobs like Imus or Michael Richards, whose supposedly protected freedom of speech didn't insulate them from righteous retribution of the race baiters. The Journolisters are dishonest, dishonorable, and repugnant.
hey Regressing: you prance around spouting all of your talking points like YOU'RE an expert on islam. i have spent approximately four out of the last 6 and 1/2 years in muslim countries, to include iraq, afghanistan, kyrgyzstan, kosovo, albania, and Britain ( i add this last one because THEIR liberal left has plunged them into a state of shari'a law in certain neighbourhoods.) and the other two and 1/2 years studying islamic culture/religion/politics/views, etc and how they differ in each country.
so, as one who has had PLENTY of contact with real, living, breathing muslims, let me tell you: they are using the way that YOU think – your weakness, cowardess, and aversion to offending people – against you, and against this country. they'll admit openly to it. i've heard them. and moslems will use that to destroy us and our freedoms.
but don't take my word for it. get out of your mom's basement, get a job, visit a different country, and if you make it back with your head on your neck then you'll understand.
