Let me say up front that I think Koran burning is a bad idea for a lot of reasons. In fact, I think what this little church in Florida is doing is actually harmful to the nation, their own safety and, unfortunately, the reputation and safety of Christians around the globe.
This is all kinds of stupid.
It’s also completely protected by the first amendment. In fact, it’s a two-fer involving both freedom of speech (remember, flag burning is free speech) and freedom of religion.
So where are the Democrats who, just a couple weeks ago, were lecturing us all on the inviolable first amendment? I assume all of those who supported the ground zero mosque are also in support of Koran burning in Florida, yes?
Actually, most of the supporters of Cordoba House seem to be pretty quiet about freedom of religion vis a vis Koran burning. On the chance they haven’t heard it before, let me offer liberals an argument that makes sense to me. The Florida church has the right to burn Korans, but that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. See how that works?
Finally, I have a question for the smart-alec sophists like Josh Marshall, Adam Serwer, Matt Yglesias and Justin Elliot, who had so much fun discussing the “mosque exclusion zone” a couple weeks ago…
How high can you heat a Koran without being unnecessarily provocative? Thanks to Ray Bradbury we all know that Fahrenheit 451 is a bridge too far. What about 449 degrees? 440? Would it in fact be equally problematic to supercool the Korans in liquid nitrogen (-346 degrees Farenheit) and tap them with a hammer? Could one of the Park51 proponents please enlighten us about the safe temperature range for the Koran?
As I pointed out last week, the mosque exclusion zone is literally an age old paradox (Eubilides Heap) which can be applied to any issue. In the political context it doesn’t seek to enlighten so much as ridicule. But now that the shoe is on the other foot, I don’t hear anyone laughing.

"….that doesn’t mean it’s a good idea."
That says it all. Don't burn books. Don't build the mosque. Simple as that.
Yup, simple as that…..
The only difference in the burning of the Qur'an and the building of the mosque near Ground Zero (both legal) is that the opponents of the mosque don't threaten and carry out violence all over the world because of it. If we do not allow this American citizen to do this crazy thing (for whatever reason) we are actually caving in to the intimidation of those who would take away our freedoms. This is America and we are free to be mean, insensitive, stupid, ugly, bigoted or any other thing we CHOOSE to be. The huge majority choose not to be these things, but, again we have that right here. Those extremists in Afghanistan or Iraq or any other Muslim pit, hate us already….our troops are always in dire danger, so don't let those with an agenda tell you any different.
Don't think for one second that our enemies haven't warmed themselves beside a pile of burning bibles.
That being said……………….I won't burn any books, until me and my family are freezing to death. Then you can start piling Korans and copies of "War and Peace" and Encyclopedia Brittanica right alongside one another………………
Excellent "gotcha"… Bravo!
As a Christian, I totally condemn this act. The Bible is clear that the way to destroy evil, is to do good, to bless your enemies, help them in their need, pray for them, share the gospel with no concern for your safety, not by making big, loud, publicity seeking statements.
Now, at this point I could start talking about how it's really the Muslims fault, that they caused this act by attacking us on 9/11 and brought it on themselves so they're the real book burners, but, I'm not going to do that because I actually do truly condemn this terrible act and think that there is no reason to do it.
There are all sorts of things that we "can" do, but "shouldn't."
The mosque and burning books are two prime examples.
And there are effective alternatives in both cases. If the FL preacher wants to cook an effigy of Osama binLaden, I'll bring the matches. But why torch someone else's holy book?
Gregory Koukl wrote a wonderful essay about tolerance four years ago. It is worth reading once again.
Here's a link: http://www.foxvalleycitizens.com/EntryDetail.asp?...
"Where Are the Ground Zero Mosque Democrats?"
Hole dug in ground. Head inserted.
This is a man who appears to want to destroy Christianity. As you've noted, this will cause enmity against Christians in the US and all over the world, when this and the Westboro church are not even recognized by most who follow Christ. Yet, the MSM just says "church" and there ya go.
There is no need to burn the Koran. It is a pointless endeavor. They have a right to do it, but they obviously don't have the brains not to.
That Preacher, Terry Jones?
Someone worth trusting the Grandkids to…………
i loved ann coulter's comment on this today, in her column, to paraphrase; they are both allowed by law, but both equally dumb. i have been saying this all day, if we cannot stop the mosque, because of sensitivities, then why should we stop the burning of the quran, there must be some people not terribly troubled by this. this just points out another blaring example of a double standard on conservatives, and the religious in our country. we are dumb for thinking a gzm would be a bad idea, but we are also dumb for not stopping the burning, the media cannot have it both ways!
your last sentence ties it up nicely.
Help me understand why drawing Mohammed was a good idea and burning Korans isn't.
There are a lot of people out there who call themselves Christians and I vehemently disagree with their practice of it, but the thing about freedom is that we don't get to pick and choose which freedoms are ok based on whether we agree or not. This article brings a huge elephant in the room(Dems who stand by the mosque because it's legal, but don't come out for this American to exercise his same freedom) into sharp focus
Actually the problems are not with the Q. The problem is a stupid, arrogant, government that will not condemn Islam as the organized criminal enterprise it most assuredly is. The gov continues to beg for moderate peaceful Muslims to speak out. What don't they get about there being no such thing as peaceful moderate Muslims? Remove the protections garnered by the Islam scam being sold as a religion. All will turn to normal. The bad Muslims will leave once religious protections are removed.
I think the Chinese have cursed us as we are definitely living in "interesting" times.
The only problem I had with drawing Mohammed was that so many people went lude (although some of the most foul imagery was created a long time ago and had nothing to do with the recent "draw Mohammed day"). Otherwise it didn't bother me. Why? I think because Islam has so many rules and the minute you allow them to dictate something like "no drawing the prophet" — who was just a human when you get right down to it — they start dictating everything else.
Creating the image of a historical figure is vastly different from burning books. Burning books brings up the imagery of the Nazi government doing the same thing. Again, a pointless endeavor. It says nothing. Drawings of Mohammed are at least making a statement.
Burning a Quran would be the metaphorical middle finger to Islam and the dhimmi lackeys in our government.
As much as the prophet of Islam himself.
ok so you had a different take, thanks
My view on it was that is was a senseless provocation.
It is kind of like people burning American flags, in foreign countries; it doesn't affect me directly it just shapes my opinion of the people and place doing it.
That be true.
I oppose burning the Qur'an as Rev. Jones intends to do, but not because it might P O some muslims, but because winning hearts and minds in Afghanistan as our troops are trying so hard to do will be set back considerably.
As for muslims, there may or may not be 'moderate' ones, but you can be double-damned sure there is NO moderate Islam.
I would suggest the hole the "GZM dem's" have their heads in is one of their own bodily orifices.
When somebody claims they will kill you if you
draw a cartoon, my response is to want to draw
a cartoon. Senseless provocation? No, I would
consider myself provoked to do it just because
of the retarded response coming from muslim
extremists threatening death.
For now, I am on the side of saying that burning
Korans is a really bad idea. However, if provoked
by a very poor response by muslims (if that were
to happen) then maybe tomorrow I will have a
different opinion.
The one item I see in this entire mess is the hypocrisy of the progressives. Seems to me that their idea of freedom of speech and religion is what they say it is, but only when it is beneficial to them. The stench from their fear is disgusting.
Yes, I agree that the pastor has a right to burn the book(s), and I will defend his right to do so. And, yes, I would ask the minister to rethink the idea, not out of fear for our soldiers or the ire of the muslims, but that it is a petty idea. It solves nothing and does not bring back those approximately 3,000 souls.
How many Korans are destroyed every time some yutz blows up a funeral or people leaving a mosque? It's okay for Moslems to defile Korans, but unbelievers cannot?
Why did anyone even pay any attention to this man? He richly deserves to be completely ignored. No microphone, no TV camera, no nothing.
I dont think I follow you. the reason to want to draw Mohammed was because of death threats and other responses. if Koran burners get death threats will that change your mind?
Let's watch how this event plays out. Opinions are nice but when the match is lit, what will the cops do? What will the muslim do? What will the media say then? This reaction is all about a FUTURE event. In other words, what a person is saying and thinking, not doing. Generals have offered opinions. The Secretary of State has given her thoughts. Even the Vatican has weighed in. My, my.
democrats should support this guy.. .. .. .. ''freedom of religion'', '' freedom of expression'' [speech].. .. they support flag burning,, the rights of strippers [speech] , degenerate art [speech] , pornography[ expression], riots- demonstrations [speech], nude beaches[ expression], gay parades [ expression], violent tv, sexual immorality in cinema, obscene music [speech], .. .. what's the problem again…. your ''sacred cow'' [Islam] is getting gored.. join the party… ..
If the steps taken by too many muslims to stop the burning of Korans
gets too extreme, then yes, I may change my mind about the wisdom
of burning Korans. Some things are done out of spite and I would
say that that kind of spite would be warranted. On the other hand,
I am not one for burning books or drawing offensive religious
cartoons of any religion. However, my sympathy goes downhill
fast if the religion being made fun of fails to respond properly.
ok
i can certainly appreciate that
Thank you. We have to remember that we are all humans
and as humans we respond negatively or positively based
on what we think of a given individual or group.
Frankly, my opinion of Islam has gone way way down from
my more kind view years ago. The reason is clear. The
response from way too many Islamic followers has been
really poor in my opinion, on way too many subjects.
(continued) Now we're subjected to the universal tsk tsking about the preacher who "dares" to burn the religion of peace's Koran. The outrage about someone burning a book, as some kind of moral equivalent to the violence of stone throwing executioners and head chopping terrorists simply boggles the mind. Folks, you can never tolerate them enough, accommodate them enough, crawl low enough, or become subservient enough, to stop these evil people from hating you. Our simple existence as "infidels" offends THEIR sensibilities and try as we might, that fact will NOT change.
I have flare-ups too but I am actively trying to take the high road and not castigate the entire religion. It is sometimes very difficult.
I'd start with a copy of the federal income tax code. But that's me.
I'm waiting for obama to go make a speech saying how much he supports it. Like he did with the mosque.
Tolerance doesn't mean what you think it means.
AssHats!!!
Now that there has been a zillion news reports and numerous articles, even here………….I wonder what the other hand is doing?
This is one of the most brilliant articles I've ever read. I hereby sign up as a fan of John Sexton! Kudos dude.
I only have one question for the pastor: Need a light?
When people behave illegally and violently to someone exercising their Constitutional Rights, they should be arrested and punnished. When was the last time someone got in trouble or hassled for burning an American flag or Christian Bible? Oh yeah, I forgot. Those guys are just exercising THEIR 1rst Ammendment Rights. I forgot that some folks are more equal than the rest of us.
I blame the media for sensationalizing this and of course, the elitist opinion generators (A.K.A. high end bloggers and op/ed writers) who will also sensationalize this to make it a wedge issue. This will help keep our soldiers and Christians safe. Just sayin'.
Katie Couric's response is classic inverted Liberal thinking:
"Can't this be stopped? … What if it incites violence against MUSLIMS?!!!"
So she thinks that burning a Koran will incite violence against MUSLIM???
Bwahahahaa!
HaHa………………….That should keep you and your family warm for a while.
This guy is an asshole, and the Muslim Rauf(?) is an asshole for wanting to build a mosque that close to Ground Zero. Perhaps we should get these two together for a death match, and rid the world of a couple assholes.
We have already heard a great deal about what Mr. Jones has said, and a steady torrent of criticism has been focused upon him, branding him as an islamophobic bigot, and whatever other invented invectives we have yet to hear. This kind of reminds me of the Shirely Sherrod embroglio. Can we hear from Mr. Jones, in context and in entirety,
Mr Jones has a right to be heard. Let us hear him out. Let us be as tolerant to him. Why are we being warned that there will be even more intolerent Muslims who will want to kill us, just like the intolerent Muslim who killed Theo Van Gough and the Muslims who murdered the people at Ground Zero. They do not need an excuse to kill us. Allah has already give his OK. Yes the Muslims have a right to practice their homocidial jihadist ideology by turning the Twin Towers into burning buildings and burning people.
All Mr. Jones wants to burn is the book from which the murdering Muslim terrorists derived their teachings and their homocidial inspirations, turning the Twin Towers into towering infernos. Let us hear Mr. Jones out. And maybe when we are allowed to listen to what he has to say, we can better judge the appropriateness of what he is doing.
I'm only sorry I could only thumb you up once.
At least a couple years.

I'd go along with that if heard Muslim-Americans condemn world-wide terrorism and violence.

I have no problem burning the koran. It is not holy. It ranks below smut, in my opinion.

Matthew 5
43"You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'
44"But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
46"For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
47"If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
48"Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Romans 12
14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.
16Be of the same mind toward one another; do not be haughty in mind, but associate with the lowly Do not be wise in your own estimation.
17Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
18If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all men.
19Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY," says the Lord.
20"BUT IF YOUR ENEMY IS HUNGRY, FEED HIM, AND IF HE IS THIRSTY, GIVE HIM A DRINK; FOR IN SO DOING YOU WILL HEAP BURNING COALS ON HIS HEAD."

U.N. to Control World's Agenda
PLEASE, PLEASE go to <a href="http://www.foxnews.com” target=”_blank”>www.foxnews.com and read this U.N. to Control World's Agenda. It will blow your mind and make you ready to…well I won't say what I'm thinking. Just read it.
After a year of humiliating setbacks, United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-Moon and about 60 of his top lieutenants — the top brass of the entire U.N. system — spent their Labor Day weekend at a remote Austrian Alpine retreat, discussing ways to put their sprawling organization in charge of the world’s agenda.
Details concerning the two-day, closed-door sessions in the comfortable village of Alpbach were closely guarded. Nonetheless, position papers for the meeting obtained by Fox News indicate that the topics included:
– how to restore “climate change” as a top global priority after the fiasco of last year’s Copenhagen summit;
– how to continue to try to make global redistribution of wealth the real basis of that climate agenda, and widen the discussion further to encompass the idea of “global public goods”;
THERE'S MUCH MUCH MORE TO READ! THIS IS JUST THE FIRST FEW QUOTES
Right on flyright66!
why, why, why, why, why, why, why can you people not conceive of a difference between the type of islamic extremists in Al Qaeda and the majority of other muslims in the world. The peaceful and moderate Muslims ARE out there but they speak in quieter voices and they are not broadcast on FoxNews or Breitbart.com You all simply refuse to make a distinction because it would be politically inconvenient for you to do so.
Did our founders not want this to happen ?
The decision by Hartford, Conn., leaders to begin kicking off their council meetings with a Koranic prayer — in a show of solidarity with Muslims — led to a busy morning Wednesday for staff members who were bombarded by hate mail overnight.
"All night long, the e-mails have been coming," Petrel Maylor, an executive assistant to Council President Jo Winch said
Winch, who was holding a news conference Wednesday to explain the change in invocations, gave her blessing to Muslim prayer in a press release Tuesday.
"I feel it is very important that, as a council, we project a culture of inclusiveness in the city of Hartford," Winch said in the release. "Too often it is our differences that divide us. In my opinion, it is our combination of differences that makes us strong."
Council leaders decided they would invite local imams "to perform the invocations at beginning of the council meetings in September,"
I am talking about burning a book, not a person. We are to resist evil even as we pray for the evildoer. If you succumb to the evil that is rising up against you, you may not be able to resist apostasy. There is a mark by which we are judged. Where is your mark?
Islamophobe definition: Anyone smart enough to realize that Islam is NOT a religion, but a political system dependent on the barbaric Sharia law, which uses intimidation, violence and beheadings to force everyone into submission, (Islam does not mean "peace", it means "submission".
It is diametrically opposed to freedom, and is a threat to the existance of the United States.
They demand tolerance, yet are the most intolerant people in the world, killing anyone that disagrees with them.
They are mysoginists who consider women of less value then animals.
Islamic Jihad is the group that declared war on the United States as soon as we became a country, killing and kidnapping our sailors, forcing them into slavery and demanding tribute to sail the seas safely. Eventually, President Jefferson created the Marines, (called "Leathernecks" because of the stiff leather collars protecting their necks from the swords of these primative savages). "Millions for defense, not one penny for tribute". Words to live by today.
They wish to implement the hateful Sharia law in the US, (one of the issues the lying imam at ground zero demands), and we actually have traitorous ignorami in our government, sitting in our courts and bloviating in our media, who are not against the idea.
When they say, "Islam is a religion of peace", they mean that after they have subjugated, forcibly converted or killed all non-muslims, there will be peace.
When cartoons of the pedophile mohammed were published around the world, these savages rioted and killed people in every country but America. They are cowards, who knew a free, armed populace in America would have dramatically reduced the number of muslims in the world, had they tried that excrement here.
How does that part of Sharia law hold up to our freedom of speech?
We need to amend our constitution to read, "Freedom of any religion that does not call for the subjugation, forced conversion or death of non-believers.
I am a proud Islamophobe, communistophobe, marxistophobe, socialistophobe, pedophileophobe, misogynistophobe, and anything-else-that-is-out-to destroy-America-ophobe, including Obamaophobe.

And some americans letting more radicals in…..in strategic places?
lets all go hold up some signs. that'll fix em.
We need a better plan…..especially non violent
LOL!
Excellent point.
I hadn't thought about that. Suicide bombers don't send in front men to save the Korans…
it takes an asshole . . .. . to know. . . . . .an asshole…. .. . . .. . . you. . . . . . . ….. .. asshole.. ..
Because, because, because, because the "moderate" Muslims who don't like the radical BS dare not speak against it or they will be condemned to violence and/or death.
It's been 9 YEARS, and we have yet to hear one squeak of condemnation of 9/11 from any of the "moderate" Muslims–Imam Rauf included. Any idea why? Didn't think so.

"nothing less than a fundamental transformation of the global economy is need, one based on clean energy resources coupled with the proper policy framework and market incentives to support it"
These people are desperate. They have been under enormous criticism for decades. They are corrupt and ineffective. Every one of them have their fortunes tied up in Global Warming spawned technologies. Besides the money, they crave power and they are losing it. The One was to be their ticket, the US has to be on board or it all goes down.
So, like ineffective, impotent, power hungry managers they call meetings and write pretty documents. Notice who wrote that document? The Peacebuilding Support Office. Sounds lovely, huh? That was created in 2005 in direct response to all the criticism and corruption charges. Typical, lets hire some people to make everything SOUND good.
Their plan is going down……and it starts in November.
"Harvey Kushner: Holy War on the Home Front is the first book to publish the "Charter of the Center of Studies, Intelligence and the Information." The "Charter" was handwritten in Arabic and dated 1981. It is a militant Islamic organizational plan for terrorism, with every cell, division, agent, and objective clearly defined. One expert's opinion regarding the original Arabic is that the document could have originated from the ranks of the Muslim brotherhood, the originator of all contemporary militant Islamic movements."
Also published in Holy War is a hand-drawn map of the United States and Canada that accompanies the "Charter." The map is divided into four sections: the Western Region, the Central Region, the Eastern Region, the Canadian Region. For example, the Eastern Region has dots over the cities of Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Raleigh, and Miami. In 1981, few, if any, terrorist groups were in the cities labeled in Arabic on the map. Today, however, there are terrorist groups in every city shown on the map, proof of how far the secret Islamic terror network has spread."

Dunno about Dems but Bloomberg is apparently now for both! (Daily News report) Guy is completely wack
You had to bring this up right before my bedtime!
First off, "you people"? I mean, WTF? garciems, let me see if I can explain this to you, (and don't take my word for it, go read the Islamic texts yourself). The "Good" Muslims, blow s**t up, kill, terrorize and rape for "allah". "Bad" Muslims are those who are "backsliders" as far as Islam goes, i.e., they just want to "get along".
In Islam, there is a concept called abrogation. It means that latter, more violent things Muhammad says his "allah" told him supersede the things his "allah" told him formerly when he was relatively powerless. The concept of a "moderate Islam" is part of something called "Taqiyya", or deception of non-Muslims. We in the west call it lying, Muhammad's god told him it was a-okay. As an interesting aside, most Muslims today cannot read the Qu'ran, as they don't even speak Arabic, which wasn't a written language until about 150 YEARS after Muhammad died, having never ever physically set foot in Jerusalem, (BTW).
See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ib9rofXQl6w
In closing, I frankly don't give a right rat's @$$ about what you term "politically inconvenience". I DO though care about whether my daughters grow up with the evil that Islam promises to women having even the remotest chance of being considered acceptable, normal or respectable in my country. It is a physical impossibility: you cannot swear allegiance to Islam AND the Constitution of the United States at the same time. They are MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE. Any questions?
Somewhere, somehow, a thought occurred to me that I haven't seen brought up anywhere, and it ties into the whole concept of flag-burning. Bear with me here. So when it's time to respectfully retire an American flag the proper method of destruction is immolation, that is, you burn it. So it begs the question, what is the proper way to "retire" a copy of the Qu'ran? If not by fire, do you use it up with your left hand?
Okay, that was a low blow. DOH! I did it again, sorry. No really, I' sorry…really. So if burning IS the proper method, what's the fuss about?
I'll begrudgingly (and believe me, it pains me to say something nice about this hack) acknowledge and reluctantly almost-praise the NY City Mayor (just can't bring myself to type his name in a sentence with "praise" – even if modified by "almost") on this one. He did come out with a statement supporting the Florida preacher's right to burn the book.
So sorry Red. You did make me laugh for the first time tonight. I know it's enough to make you go crazy. We have to remember with knowledge comes power and truth.(or something like that, I'm so tired myself)
It's what we don't know we should be freaking out over. Sweet dreams. lol
Because its not a holy book its a manual for domestic violence, terrorism, militancy, and suicide bombings.
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH AMERICA? I remember when Americans were tough and proud of being ONE NATION UNDER GOD, now they are turning into a bunch of progressive, politically correct, whiney babies!
Although it is a stupid idea, they have every right to burn the Quran as much as they have the right to burn the American Flag, isn't that what SCOTUS keeps telling us?
Americans are soooo careful not to insult Islamic terrorists, even General Petraeus is worried we might make Muslims mad enough that they will shoot at our troops, THEY ARE SHOOTING AT OUR TROOPS NOW YOU IDIOT!!! (Sorry General, I know you are under orders, pass the idiot remark on up to your boss.)
America has the best equipped, deadliest military in the world. TURN OUR TROOPS LOOSE, LET THEM KILL ALL THOSE MISERABLE COWARDS, OTHERWISE, BRING OUR TROOPS HOME!!!
Then, IF AND WHEN the Muslims STOP ATTACKING AMERICA and everyone else, MAYBE we can consider respecting Islam.
Obama is a Muslim… http://usataxpayer.org/?0019422256
I really think he will back off. He has made his point to the world, and the world has seen how the muslims have responded. Yep, tell me again about that religion of peace.
Nope. Just say ACLU or SPLC. They're self explanatory.
The more I hear about Muslims frothing at the mouth to retaliate, the more I think this nutter-butter might be making a good point. They hate our culture. They hate our openness and tolerance. They hate free speech.
Why is our government trying to condemn free speech and in doing so appease the Mohammad-Monsters???
Why should Violent muslim radicals be able to silence Non-violent christian radicals? This preacher is a banana but at least he's just burning a damn book and not blowing himself and his congregation up in order to get his point across. If only Islam were so civilized. They could definitely learn a thing or to about protest from this strange man.
With the cameras rolling, a Koran in one hand and a lit match in the other, he blows out the match and says calmly, "We don't do that stuff here in America." I suppose he could even mention Christ if he wanted to. Because he has made his point. However, if he does decide to complete this demonstration, well, I just hope his life insurance is paid up. I believe he will be killed by muslims. That will maybe be enough to stop this mosque at ground zero talk.
First, this guy and his band of nuts are…well…nuts. Having said that, if we are to believe that Islam is a religion of peace AND the 911 attacks were carried out by a small group of "extremists", then why all the hubbub about a very small group of "extremists" in Florida acting "stupidly" (thanks BHO)? And, why are they then threatening the entire Nation of America when it's wrong in their minds for us to carry out the same response? Hmmmmmm.
I live in a small town in the south. We have a mosque. It's a small one and most of the people who go there are Bosnians or Indians. There's a Baptist Church near it. On Eid, the muslims all invite the city commisioners, the mayor the county judge and various big shots for a big dinner. Everyone comes because the food is good and the people are very welcoming. (One of my Indian students said the Bosnians really know how to party). We get along just fine.
I am so happy I live in the intolerant and benighted South.

I am not advocating standing by, doing nothing and becoming dhimmis or that we be some kind of meek, silent people that use religion as an excuse to roll over and play dead or bury our heads in the sand. My point is that the way scripture says to resist evil and not succumb to it, is by doing good. Not simply praying, but actively doing, and it tells us what that good is. IMO, burning books, no matter how evil, doesn't qualify as good because it simply amounts to giving them the finger. It might might you feel better to do so, and in this guy's case it might sell books, but it is very unlikely to reach Muslims for Christ. I realize that is not everyone's goal, but this is a church and pastor claiming to represent Christ that are doing this, so it should be theirs. I don't care a bit about offending Islam, but I do care when those representing Christ are misrepresenting Him and His word.
why, why, why, why, why, why, why can YOU not stop calling us YOU PEOPLE? You simply refuse to make a distinction because it would be politically inconvenient for you to do so.
Good post and well said.
What ever happened to… "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say (or burn it)."
We have a lot of people on both sides of the political spectrum saying they don't agree with the Florida pastor. But I have yet to hear someone speak strongly about his rights. Looks like Sarah Palin is part of the "don't agree" chorus.
The original burn the koran day was in a year around 650, about 18 years after the death of the pedophile prophet.

The one democrat that I'll give credit to, and it galls me to do so, is Mayor Bloomberg (yes, I know he's registered as a Republican, but let's be real here). He came out with a very reasoned statement about the burning of the koran that is consistent with his position on the GZM.
I think it's ridiculous to worry about one very small nutcase pastor harming the reputation of Christians. I worry that Christians, a minority religion in the world, have a reputation for being wusses who will sell out every valued belief for a temporary reprieve from violence. Mohammed was a brave warrior and an aggressive conquorer; Christ was a teacher who allowed himself to be killed. We westerners have to realize that when we talk about religion, be it concepts or actions or institutions, we are coming from a completely different framework than Muslims.
Typical double standard. Liberals think anything should be allowed as free speech, except when it's Christians trying to exercise that free speech.
You can pee on the cross, you can deface the Bible, you can stomp on the symbol of America *the flag*, you can also burn it… but you can't touch the false doctrine of the devil.
It is amazing that some simple New Testament quotes get met with such disapproval. It was probably the same when they were first spoken.
Your post reminded me of an article I read last winter. Your idea is already in use.

'LEAVE NO DEMOCRATZI 'LOON' STANDING IN NOVEMBER'!
———————————————————————————–
Did you notice, America, that the first Muslim in our White House had no problem coming to the defense of these 'radical' Islamics and their right to build this recruiting station on hallowed ground standing upon our Consitution and it's right to religious freedom.
Yet…he comes out against the Florida Pastor who is using his Constitutional right!
What is wrong with this picture? You are right…again he sides with Islam and goes against an American using his Consitutional rights!
I do not agree with the Pastor and I do not agree with the iman…both are wrong…both are Constitutionally right!
Again the Muslim in the White House…turning on America and Americans to favor his Islamic brothers!

IMPEACHMENT OR THE 'ORIGINAL' KENYAN BIRTH CERTIFICATE…IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME…AND 2010 WILL BE THE TIME…GUARANTEED!
There's no question that Terry Jones is a nutcase of the first order. There's also no question that whatever the 50 members of the Dove World Outreach Center and their Pastor do or plan to do deserves no attention outside the Gainesville, Florida neighborhood where their church is located. The notion that what this tiny group of nutcases may do is representative of the beliefs of all Christians is preposterous on its face. Why, then, has the bright light of the major media been focussed on the planned non-event of an obscure cult burning a few books? What benefit can come from everyone from the President to the Pope, to every publicity hungry celebrity speaking out in condemnation of something so eminently deserving of being ignored. And what are they all saying? "Don't make those Muslims mad! They will hurt us again." "Be afraid," they say, "Be very afraid!" This is the most disgusting attempt yet to divert our attention from the crucial issues that we Americans are facing. Don't fall for it. Keep your focus on what we need to do to regain the America we are losing bit by bit.
Incidentlaly, I agree with what you say, however I am making a distinction between individual adherants of islam and the evil force I believe islam to be. We can and must strive to convert individual muslims but we cannot convert islam. There is no way that islam can be altered, sanitized or justified in a way that my God could embrace. He is just. He will not provide a means of salvation through the cross and throw the gates of heaven open to the likes of Mohammed.Throughout the Bible there are instances where God has mercy on individuals but bring judgement on institutions.
I am not at war with muslims, I am at war with islam. I am not at war with abortionists but I am at war with abortion. Go along to get along has become what this country is about. I dont know itf burning one copy of the koran is the right approach, but it is something.
Not very many people liked Jeremiah either.
Let me say upfront that Islam is not a religion, but a conspiracy cult. People seem to think we have been at war with Islam since 9/11. The truth is we have been at war with these sick freaks for 1200 years – since the inception of this corrupt movement.
There will be no peace. There will be no peace until we are dead or they are dead. They won't have it any other way so my feelings on this are let us get on with the war and slaughter. When we have killed millions of them then the rest will get the picture. If they don't, then kill them too. They want it to be us or them and I say let it be them.
This is no different than the fanatical movement in Japan during World War II that believed there was no higher purpose in this world than to have the opportunity to die for the Emperor of Japan because they believed him to be God on Earth. This is no different from the Muslims believing they will go to an even better version of heaven by dying in the cause of God.
Fine, let us help arrange the trip for as many who wish to go.
Burn the Quran. Burn it, piss on it and then dump what's left in a pig sty.
They want a war, give them what they want.
Hah! The first amendment is only used by the Libs when it's convenient for them. Hypocrites. I also think "Let the church burn those d@mned books" Who cares? Are we afraid that the non-existent Allah is going to come down and brush America off the map.
I do agree with you that Islam as religion or political system cannot be made acceptable to God. We can and should resist it on a political/governmental/societal level, but I believe the church can help collapse that system by obeying God and reaching out to individual Muslims. This seems counterproductive to me, in the same way that it is counterproductive for the Muslims to build the mosque at Ground Zero. We recognize that they are simply trying to insult us, they will recognize the same in this book burning. I realize I must be coming off sounding like I'm advocating go along to get along, but that is really not my intention at all. I just think that those claiming to represent Christ, should let the gospel and Christ offend, instead of their taunts.
