On Thursday, the Associated Press breathlessly reported that babies in America are getting diaper rash. I swear I am not making this up.
Thursday’s story centered around what is described as “a handful of reports” to the Consumer Product Safety Commission from mothers whose babies have come down with a bad case of diaper rash. But instead of getting the Desitin out of the medicine chest and keeping baby’s bottom nice and dry, these parents have decided to blame the disposable diapers. In this case, it’s the Pampers Dry Max diaper. So far, the CPSC has received what it calls “a handful” of reports.

Let’s put this into context for just a moment. We have this “handful” of reports of diaper rash with moms blaming the diaper rather than the fact that babies just get diaper rash sometimes. Now, compare that fact with this statistic (taken from an alarmist website I’d rather not link to) from Pampers spokeswoman Jodi Allen:
While we take every complaint very seriously and look into every call or email, especially as it relates to babies’ skin health, after exhaustive testing, we have seen absolutely no evidence that the materials used in Pampers Dry Max causes can cause a skin safety issue. This diaper contains the same type of ingredients as our previous Cruisers diaper and in fact, 2.2 billion diapers using Dry Max have already been used in the United States alone.
So – with 2.2 billion diapers and a handful of reports (5), what does that work out to? I think the odds of getting diaper rash from Pampers would be about the same as getting struck by lightning while holding a winning Powerball ticket during a polar bear attack on the French Riviera. That’s like 2.27 x 10 to the -9 power.
Why would any reputable news organization, and I use that term loosely when it comes to the AP, run with such a story? A “handful of reports” of diaper rash come in and it’s suddenly decided that the culprit is a few of the 2.2 billion diapers sold. With that many diapers sold, I’d guess we’d have millions of complaints if there was a problem with them. Something just isn’t right.

Where is this coming from? Is it the environmental left, which demands that moms return to cloth diapers? Maybe it’s the extremists who say babies shouldn’t wear any diapers at all. Is this percolating up from the plaintiff’s bar with some lawyers looking for a lawsuit? Perhaps it a competitor looking to take Pampers down a notch.
I’m not sure where it’s coming from but I sure know where it’s going. When a news organization like the Associated Press decides that “a handful” of babies with diaper rash is news and that unproved, unfounded accusations against a diaper are an appropriate part of the story, thinking moms can’t help but be a little suspicious.

I knew something smelled …fishy. In this case folks simply may not have liked the redesign of the diaper.
More worthless leaches trying to get a free ride.
Wusses! My dad made me diapers out of pallets he brought home from work.
Where did you come up with 5. I personally know more than 5 people who complained to Pampers. Until you look at the pictures of open wounds and blisters on these babies being called "diaper rash" you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss it.
Quick! We need government regulation of diapers!
Having Obama in office is raising blood pressure to dangerously high levels all over the country.
He is literally making people sick.
He should be recalled.
Of couse the AP and the Green movement is in a panic about this…
they're still wearing diapers.
Intellectually and emotionally, most liberal journalists are still wearing diapers. In Keith Olberman's case, I believe he is literally wearing them.
How many fingers do you have on one hand?
You personally know more than 5. Have they complained? If it was as bad as you say it would be all over the MSM.

Then I would suggest they try Huggies.
Wow, your dad must've REALLY liked you. Our family used the rusty barbed wire from fences around abandoned military proving grounds.
I Pampers the only brand they can buy? Are they being forced to buy them by a bureaucrat?
I tried to be environmentally responsible so I started using diapers made from hazardous waste products. Figured I'd kill two birds with one stone. Didn't work out though, only seemed to make the rashes worse.
(Please note this a joke, only a joke, and nothing but a joke, I would never do that to my daughter.)
It's Bushes fault!! Quick call Olberscum and Maddow the wonder boy.
Most of the people complaining just want the old Pampers diapers back that didn't leak or cause rashes. Most of us were very loyal brand users and paid a premium for the best diaper. Additional vultures (lawsuits) and competitors will always be around to see what they can collect
P&G's Jodi Allen stated that this Dry Max diaper is their most researched product. That is frightening! They tested 20,000 babies and 300,000 diaper changes. Do the math–that is just 15 diapers per subject…roughly 2-3 days of diapers. That is not long enough! In plenty of cases, signs have not been blatantly obvious prior to that number of days. I do not see how Pampers can deem their product as "safe" with such little research done. This is no granola crowd. Just a concerned group of mostly moms that are concerned for babies that are crying their 'tushes" off when changing the new Pampers. Check out the Facebook site: Pampers bring back the old cruisers/swaddlers and you'll see.
Good one.
Also, many thanks JunkScience Mom for addressing the insane scare tactics used on tired, overwhelmed parents. If you believe all the hype about bottles, diapers, formula, organic baby food and clothing, not to mention toys, I'm amazed any of us survived. So thank you for speaking out against the knee-jerk fear reactions and thanks to Breitbart for putting together the BIG sites.
Thankfully. Hardasses keep the country hard and ready to battle our enemies.
Our enemies like soft wimps like Obama.

Someone might tell these moms that they actually have to CHANGE the diaper more than once a day/week. Top notch reporting, AP. Seriously. Keep trying to distract people with nonsense so they don't see what's really happening around them… a plan that appears to be working, unfortunately.
I have no comment on this interesting article, but as the grammar police I'd like to point out that there is no such thing as "centered around." You "center on" something, not around it.
I wasn't always happy with everything W did, but he knew how to play offense. This Kenyan turd just plain offends me. I can no longer stand to hear his voice or see that head that looks like a scrotum.
I hear michelle obama has complained that all those kids are all wearing clean white dipers and it is racist that black ones are are always dirty.
You guys got diapers? Your parents must have been rich.
No kidding. I got a shovel and a map of the backyard.
…and always needing to be changed.
if they changed the diapers once in awhile it wouldnt happen. they must think 1 diaper should last a week like thier underware
Bush did it!
They do know that they need to actually change the diapers …right?
Baby with a diaper rash? Someone needs to be sued!! Where's John Edwards when you need him?
We use Fuzzi Bunz cloth diapers. They last forever (some friends of ours have used a single set for several kids and they still look brand new), wash in our washing machine, and the insert sucks up wetness incredibly well and keeps our daughter's bottom dry. Plus, they don't get that weird smell which disposable diapers get. Best of all, you can fit two inserts inside to keep dry overnight. They've helped our daughter sleep through every night since she was 6 weeks old.
It's not even a question of being environmentally conscious. We just plain like the way they work better.
What does a used diaper and a liberal have in common? They are both full of…
Naked babies are cute. Let then go au naturale from time to time. What? You clean up after your puppy, don't you?
Time for a Rash and Diaper Czar. Never make a crisis go to waste or a Diaper.
"“a handful” of reports."
"So – with 2.2 billion diapers and a handful of reports (5), what does that work out to?"
"That’s like 2.27 x 10 to the -9 power."
Someone must have VERY tiny hands
we switched to using bambo nature diapers. they are 100% natural inside and still fit like pampers. we buy them here… nurturetheseed.com
Seems the most troublesome rash is the rash of unaccountability, or maybe a rash of lazy parenting. Maybe our POTUS can appoint a Diaper Czar.
Hum… I believe diaper rash has been around since the beginning of babies. If you don't like the product, don't buy it!
As a mom of a now grown kid, I knew had to deal with diaper rash at the first signs. Rather than whinning, moms that are complaining should maybe change the brand and diapers more often……and use appropriate ointment to deal with it. If new moms can't figure it out, maybe they should ask their grandmas.
Next thing – they'll try to blame someone for colic. Give me a break. Get over it.
As painful as that is what you are describing is not just a “diaper rash” sounds more like an allergic reaction or possibly a yeast infection. My grand daughter who lives with me had the same problem at 6 months of age. After 3 trips to the doctor to clear things up we discovered she developed an allergy to formaldehyde used in most diapers, pampers is just one of them. There is nothing worse than seeing the little ones in pain and I was hopping mad at the doctors for taking so long to listen to me that this was not normal!! But as far as pampers goes, so what it is/was an allergy, pampers did not cause it and are not responsible for it. Tell them to go back to the doctors and not take the can answer of “Oh it is just a rash keep them clean and dry.”
Just in case no one has noticed, Dry Max is a Proctor and Gamble product. The diaper story was released, when was that, Thursday? Oh wasn't that the day P&G got hammered and supposedly started the stock market meltdown? Coincidence, I'm sure.

lol! "dammit"!
Yeah, he did pull out most of the nails.
If it smells fishy, try checking the diaper.
I've raised a child. They've been known to do that from time to time.
Since January my husband and I have received 4 different notices that we may be part of a class action suit. In three of those the company agreed to settle to avoid the prolonged court and media circus. What atrocities had been committed against us poor unsuspecting citizens? The mower we bought several years ago may not go as fast as the seller/salesman claimed. Gee, no wonder our grass kept growing these FIVE years. But wait, that evil yogurt company didn't fix all my digestive issues. Not like I should have gone to a doctor and asked the doctor how to take care of it. It's the yogurt company's fault. And the internet company owes me too. It may not have gone as fast as it was supposed too. Um, as a consumer, can't I just cancel their service or not renew the contract? But that would require me to make a decision or do some research. Why should I do that? I'll be rich now with my settlements. Of course, after the class action lawyers take their 10 million or more and I share with everyone else, I get, oh, 2 bucks. Yay, enough to supersize my lunch and then sue them. Woohoo.
Gee, can't imagine why the class action lawyer crowd is working overtime while the Democrats run Washington. Hm.
It's 'cause of "Anthropogenic Global Warming", obviously.
The smell is being marketed as "Ode de` AlGore" – available at all Macy's and Kohl's nationwide.
It could explain why his son turned out to be such a hardass.
JunkScience Mom. Will someone at the BIGs take on the GMO issue?
Monsanto and the GMO racket is more serious than anyone wants to admit.

Calling our safe school caesar to check into this matter. It's right up his alley.

The AP is an assembly line. Paste title, a few quotes, hit send button.
Damn right. W could run something like a 7-minute mile, which is pretty fast. Obama has a soft little belly that liberals gush over. You tell me which guy the terrorists would rather deal with.
And even tinier brains!
It's all Bush's fault!
Shut yo mouth.
LOL, I don't even want to know where you got splinters!
I didn't even think about the connection to the environmentalists and their desire to see babies return to cloth diapers and do away with disposables. Way to go, JK Mom. Keep them coming.
" Until you look at the pictures of open wounds and blisters on these babies being called "diaper rash" you shouldn't be so quick to dismiss it. "
Why would anyone let the problem get that bad before taking action ? That's not 'diaper rash', that's 'mom's on crack'.
I was going through some old credit card statements last week and noticed on one of them that I had a 7 cent credit from a class-action lawsuit. What a windfall!
Now if only I could contract Chrons' disease so I could join the accutane class-action lawsuit.
These nuisance class-action lawsuits need to be stopped.
How about a little issue called Codex Alimentarius and the "Harmonization" efforts in the UK, coming soon to a corporatist bureaucracy near you!
We found that any other diaper besides the 'cruisers' by Pampers gave our babies a terrible rash. Also, we used the soft cloth-like wipes from Costco – the Kirkland brand. There are similar generic brands in grocery stores. Any of the harsh, papery wipes give our babies a rash. When we stuck with those two products, our babies were absolutely fine.
Try wipes on yourselves and see how they feel. Some of them will give grownups a rash.
Another thing to avoid was citrus drinks. We usually did, anyway, but if you have an older toddler sometimes they get orange juice and such.
It was trial and error. But when I see a baby with a rash, I recommend changing diapers or wipes to the mothers. All the gooey gunk to prevent rashes just don't seem to help.

LOL what? Truth hurts?
LOL yeah yeah – it's Bush's fault again, but it happened on bambam's watch…and so with different rulers, often there are different rules.
To establish the new Bambam rules some details are needed:
Are these black babies or white that are getting these severe diaper rashes? ACLU want's to know.
Only black babies, ah ok see this is racism. Now this requires an investigation, study grants, stimulus funds with laws. Then some more final studies by the UN to declare that it's the white babies faults – no nappies for you whitey!
White babies will be forced to streak around naked dodging painful tasering by various government security forces like SWAT teams while they are going to and from their various day care's, vaccination clinics, visits with grandma and grandpa – who are experienced in dodging SWAT teams tasering themselves oddly enough …. and LSM will cover up that black babies are still getting diaper rashes at the same rate they always did.
I had a lot of problems with my sons getting nappy (diaper) rash. It is in fact due to the strength and acidic content of their urine. It is also due to not checking them enough, and ensuring that the urine does not get so close to the skin.
I mostly used cloth nappies but with my third son, we moved from Australia to USA for a time. Instead of using the cloth nappies I changed over to Pampers.
There are many factors involved in getting diaper rash. Changing baby often is one way of trying to prevent the problem.
OMG! Let's schedule some Congressional Hearings!
This could be the end of civilization as we know it!

Hilarious, nonetheless.
Looking for a pot of money and stupid come to mind.
I raised 2 children and never used anything but cloth. Only had 1 diaper rash between them and it was on daughter and pretty bad. Went to the Dr and she checked her mouth and I about lost it, turns out that antibiotics for an ear infection 3 weeks earlier had wiped out the flaura & fauna from her digestive tract and she had a yeast infection. Live culture yogurt every since whenever we take antibiotics. All diapers were washed and double rinsed at home and line dryed and never a bit of baby food in their life. Hubby and I both worked but the babies had priority to our wants.
I would like to say that I am one of the parents whose son got a nasty rash from these diapers. I change his diaper every few hours so he didnt get the rash because i only change him once a week. When the rash started I started giving him 2 baths a day and let him go au natural for awhile between changes. I used different creams also. It just kept getting worse. Then I saw something about the diapers on the news and thought "hmm, maybe that has something to do with why his diaper rash just keeps getting worse no matter what I do. So i bathed him (again) and put him in a huggies diaper. He went to sleep and woke in the morning without his whole bottom being red. He only had red spots where the oozing bleeding blisters had been. Makes me really wonder about those diapers…

I have noticed that my son of 6 months has just started getting a rash that will not go away. I have been using Desitin and even sometimes an antibiotic ointment when it was really bad. I had no idea about this papmers thing until I was telling my mother in law about this rash that I cannot get rid of. She then asked me what kind of diapers he used. Pampers Dry Max. That is when I learned about this problem. I have since stopped using those diapers & his rash has immediately cleared up. There is obviously a connection here, at least in my case there is.
oh yea thats so totally doable…
lets see 30 pack of diapers @ 18$
typical baby – 10 diapers a day(low side) – for the slow ones thats 3 days worth
so that equals 180$/month 2160$/year (around abouts)
Pampers
30 pack @ 8$
80$/month 960$/year
(not counting the coupons for $1-3 off that are widely available)
obi has the right idea, you want to be "green"? go with reusable washable diapers that you can "hand-me-down" not bamboo disposables at a premium cost, but alas, your money is your money and as this great country is still free….

this is the reason we use bambo nature. they are 100% natural inside but still have the fit and function of pampers. we buy them herehttp://www.nurturetheseed.com
So sorry about your son and hope that with the change from Dry Max he gets better soon. Please report your incident to the Consumer Product Safety Commission athttp://www.cpsc.gov/about/contact.html and you may want to check out the Facebook group Pampers bring back the old cruisers, swaddlers for more information. Good luck!

Somebody needs to look out for the poor little babies against P&G and trust me I'm no granola mommy, but was livid my little girl had to suffer because of them.
Smells like its coming from the right if you ask me.
