Last Thursday, I attended a sizable Tea Party demonstration being held at the post office in Thousand Oaks, Calif. Tea Parties in this location have become routine in the last couple years. My father, who works as a technician at one of the nearby dealerships, walked down to the event with several of his coworkers during their lunch hour — all of them are supporters of the event and its message, but wished to serve merely in the capacity of observers.

Demonstrators were present on all four corners of the intersection, and my father and his two coworkers remained on the side of the street opposite the bulk of the activities. Again, they were constrained by a short lunch break and basically just wanted to check out the action without getting too involved.
After several minutes of observing some of their other friends on the congested side of the street, a local news station called KEYT approached my father and his friends and asked his opinion on the matter. In the off-camera portion of the interview, my father was very clear about his pro-Tea Party position. The reporter then asked if he could tape a segment with him, and my father agreed and reiterated his comments. He also pointed out his friends on the other side of the street to the reporter and recommended they also be filmed (and in fact, they did this and ended up leading into his segment with a short clip of these Pro-Tea Party friends — I was also standing with those friends on the other side of the street at the time).
To my knowledge, there was no opposition rally present — and if there was, certainly not to the extend that it would be seen as such. In fact, for an an event amassing somewhere between 400 and 1,000 people (about four to five times larger than a similar event a year ago), I was actually somewhat surprised that the were as many Pro people as there were, and found the lack of seemingly any opposition quite refreshing.
With that in mind, KEYT told my dad he could look for his interview to be aired later that day on the local 5 p.m. newscast.
![keyt[1] keyt[1]](/wp-includes/images/blank.gif)
As I watched the newscast later that day, I was shocked at how my father was portrayed. Not only was his interview severely spliced and edited to present some sort of vague, incomprehensible point (which I’m still not even sure I understand), but he was given the fake name of “Tee Zielsdors,” and identified as an “Anti-Tea Party demonstrator.”
Perhaps the most ridiculous part about this is he was wearing his work uniform at the time which clearly states his name, and it is definitely not “Tee.” The video footage conveniently stayed high enough to just barely avoid showing his name tag. I would almost find this laughable if I could look past the appalling fact that KEYT had to stoop to such shameless levels to manufacture an opposition point that didn’t exist.
The complexion of their agenda is fairly obvious to me. But perhaps the most disturbing element of all is the general lack of creativity displayed by the editing room of Chyron operator. “Tee Zielsdors?” Really? You’re at a “Tea” Party, so you figure you’ll name a guy “Tee?” Stunning originality.
Not only is journalistic integrity becoming an afterthought, but such absolute mockery conveys an apparent disdain for intelligent viewership. Welcome to twenty-first century “journalism” I suppose.

A perfect example of what passes for MainStreamMedia! Thank goodness for the "Big" sites as well as others. The following video is another example of what is refused to be reported by the LSM. But, I guess, when you're out of circulation, out of advertisers, and therefore out of money, the LSM must continue to "cling" to their agenda.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1CLPhz0DHM&fe...
I, for one, will not miss them one bit when they implode entirely. The best way to expediate that goal is to not support their advertisers and let those advertisers know why they won't be supported.
Wow. Ethics charges, slander?
I will never forget the Media reaction to a Green protest at Lakenheath AFB, UK. Maybe 2-300 folks showed up, but they filmed from inside the "crowd" and used creative angles. "Thousands of protestors today…"
Yeah, seriously Luisced, these morons should literally be held accountable for this. Call their B.S. and make them apologize for their idiocy.
Exactly. When the media is caught fabricating the story, they need to have their feet held to the fire.
Somewhere George Orwell is saying I told you so.
Is anyone really surprised? Really? This is just one example of what the Lame Stream Media does. They whine about bloggers and journalistic integrity, but it's so obvious they have no integrity period.
The truth shall set you free!
Ah, Santa Barbara….how many bong-loads did the reporter and editor do before they put the finishing touches on this made up news story?
It's either that or they just have an agenda and figure they can get away with it since nobody will call them on it.
Par for the course. I used to be in the entertainment business, and would send pre-written press releases to newspapers, and they's STILL get it all wrong.
I know I should be surprised by this, but I am not. My dear old grandfather always said about the media…"never believe anything you read, and only half of what you see." That was long before the internet.
Perhaps a good lawyer could make a case on this for defamation or slander. If what he said is not what was shown, and they tried to portray him as an anti-Tea Party protester when they knew for a fact he was not. He could claim that the humiliation he has received has caused him untold trauma and he could sue for damages. Maybe holding the media to the truth by holding them accountable for their actions would be a good thing.
In 1995 I was interviewed by the local paper (Arizona Republic) on a non-political, non-partisan, non-controversial subject. Imagine my surprise when the article reversed my opinions, and even misquoted me every time " " showed up. I was shocked and astonished, and realized that my belief that quotes were the only part of a newspaper that could be trusted was wrong-oh.
I have since learned that the reason I had to be misquoted was because what I said didn't fit the template. People talk a lot about 'narrative' journalism but I think that gives them too much credit. It's template journalism–a fill in the blanks, mad-libs kind of template where the story is already written, but the names, faces and quotes have to be filled in. It's the real reason the press is so biased against conservatives–their templates simply don't allow them to see the world as it is, to actually engage conservative ideas, because their stories don't need to be written, they just need to find a who to go with their pre-existing 'report.' It's shoddy, bigoted and deceptive, and that's what we have instead of reporters these days.
The single anecdote is not of course the sole source of my opinion; it was just the wake up moment when I realized things were not as they seem. I really couldn't believe that a reporter would be so dishonest over what was really a nothing story. It wasn't until much later that I realized that he simply had no choice. A reporter cannot work outside the allowed story templates. That's the reason you don't even need to read press reports to know what they'll say depending on who it's about. You can always guarantee that a political ally who cheats on his wife is a lovable rogue, and that a conservative who does the same is a foul hypocrite. You can just change the names and the stories are always the same. It's an example of what happens when education is allowed to destroy learning. Once you already know everything you can't be taught.
Why not? I believe it is time we held not only "journalist" to the standard that they swore to uphold… yes they do have a written set of standards, but also politicians who are trying to stifle free speech. Each time a elected or government official call members of the tea party a derogatory name, or states that something happened that did not happen, that is a violation of the first amendment and a blatant attempt to officially stiffle the rights of American citizens. Like blow job Bill said, words have cosequences. And you are responsible for those words if your an elected official.
"The truth shall set you free! " I don't think that the media would know the truth if it bit them in the buttocks. (Per Forrest Gump)
I really hope someone does approach this from a legal standpoint… and quickly before the raw footage is "purged" and the evidence destroyed.

Fair and impartial reporting of the news. Uh, wait. Why can't we just get the facts of a particular event so that we as individuals can make our own decisions and grow our own opinions without being "indoctrinated"?
I have always wondered why television stations don't do exposes on their local competition whenever they are caught in acts of journalistic fraud.
The statist are scared out of their wits, and they should be. This is further anecdotal evidence of that fear. The gig is up MSM you soon may have to get a real job.
Always have the cameras going. Never give an interview without at least recording the audio. Have a friend record the entire thing with his video camera.
I don't talk to reporters.
Wow! Great article, if perplexing. But I'd change the title. That weird name threw me off.
Please bring Retracto back! He's really needed for this one!
…Call me crazy, but, if the lefty journalists at KETY3 Santa Barbara are playing "word games", in addition to "video reporting" games….
…."Tee Zielsdors" is an anagram of "Die R(epublican) SS Zeelot"……yeah, they mispelt "Zealot", but, they ARE leftists…
oh my god that would be brilliant. im shure the MSM will never turn on a "brother in arms"
Ma by have some body ambush the reporters with cameras in hand and ask them some tuff questions.
Not to mention Ayn Rand.
Gee, and Santa Barbara not too long ago had its own mocked up Film Festival complete with the "Red Carpet" treatment of its so-called stars. Everyone got to put on their best finery and show their stuff "struttin' 'round." And now Santa Barbara’s very own TV station, KEYT3, has to mock up some flim flam to present a fictitious film of TEA Party attendees.
I never watch that station anyway and I can guarantee I probably never will, but those people who do watch it should send in their complaints and regrets about how low a TV station can degrade itself to an lower than low standard.
Well it seems that not everything is "Fair and Balanced." And those TV stations that are predominately "Unbalanced" continually try to cover their aspirations to prove that a "Fair and Balanced" station is really a farce.
Baseball bat in hand, maybe.
Is there any way you can get the raw footage on this? What an amazing video it would be to show both the raw footage and the end result.
Because they buy news stories from each other. Reporters just aren't good enough any longer to fill their own air time.
That's why I call them the treason media — because, like Andrew Breitbart said — they are not playing for the American team.
It's amazing how they take their ques form above and all get on board. I'm living in Obamazuela.
Same reason sharks don't eat lawyers. Professional courtesy.
Again (AND AGAIN)–lesson long, long ago learned–NEVER attend a rally/protest (and especially never give an interview)–without a film/audio recording to prove you were “severely spliced and edited.” Don't mean to beat a dead horse, but seriously, where have you been the past two years, Jay? "Journalistic integrity becoming an afterthought . . . absolute mockery . . . apparent disdain . . ." Oy vey.
From what I saw, they had Jay's dads name right for the 5pm news (Matt Widmyer) but it looked as if they accidently put up the wrong name over that interview on the 6pm news. Seemed like an honest mistake to me.
Did Dad sign a release..?
Mis-representation at least…find the opposing station's investigative journalist, and see if you can entice him into interviewing you again…
Or get a copy of it, and burn them on a Public Access channel….
Yeah I saw Matt Widmyer's name and face on the air. But in another newscast I think they probably were expecting another interview and used Matt again, but had the wrong name over him. Didn't seem intentional. They seem balanced at that station. Just a technical error probably.
Retracto…where are you…??
I watch that station and they do a good job. Maybe the other poster had it correct and it was just an error . There were some anti Tea Party peole there, by the way. I attended the one in Ventura and Solvang. In fact, I recall now seeing Matt Widmyer's name.
I think the term, "Pro" is what applies here. Modern "journalists" are Pros as in prostitutes. The only difference is that real pros know that they are pros. Journalists actually believe their own lies.
And real pros make a lot more money.
Id say his dad has grounds for a lawsuit here. Slander and Libel charges, not to mention journalistic fraud. If any of this stations competition had real guts and followed news rather than ideology, theyd interview the victim to find out what was REALLY said. Not only embarass the frauds, but set themselves up as impartial news people. Alas, it wont happen. This stations "competition" is likely kicking themselves for not lying about the interview first. Maybe someone in Breitbarts office should look into the legality of this matter. This media outlet needs to be sued.
It's so ridiculous, one is tempted to just blow it off as mass-incompetence – everyone from the cameraman to the reporter to the editor just fucking everything up in a story they really aren't that interested in telling.
But we all know better, because when this sort of bullshit happens, it never, never, ever -EVER happens the other way around.
The way headlines are written, the way the narrative is presented, the way the actual facts are massaged, bent, folded, and mutilated, the placement of more relevant information in news articles and broadcasts to either highlight or conceal those facts that fit or don't fit the narrative – the journalistic shuck-n-jive – you'd have to be a moron to come to any conclusion other than the obvious truth: these "journalists" were taught these methods in their marxist, Alinsky-worshipping J-Schools, and perfected them at their marxist, Big Journalism, progressive papers and tv stations.
Well, I hope some of you managed to watch the internet video of this newscast before it was taken down over an hour ago, as I suspected it would be:
"Story Updated: Apr 20, 2010 at 2:22 PM PDT"
Video link is dead, now it's just a picture. In fact, now I'm seeing "Story Updated: Apr 20, 2010 at 2:37 PM PDT", so obviously something about this story is being edited as we speak.
I don't see this being much of an honest mistake as opposed to editing room tomfoolery by someone very unprofessional. Let's assume one of the original newscasts did have his correct name; I didn't see all of them, so I honestly can't say for sure. All I know is the "Tee Zielsdors" version of this newscast was on the internet for the last four days, I've pointed it out to dozens of people who have in turn expressed their utter bewilderment (and let's be honest, resounding laughter), and I can't say I'm really surprised at the tactics, just a bit in awe that someone could think they would get away with something so blatantly absurd. The bottom line is someone, be it motivated by political sentiment or comedic ambition, decided to turn my father into some sort of oddball caricature. I can definitely appreciate a good joke now and then, but I just have to shake my head when it's coming from a source that should be taking painstaking efforts to accurately convey current events instead of transforming normal citizens into Lord of the Rings characters.
B+ for creativity. F- for journalistic integrity.
And upon completion of this comment, I see that the video link is once again active, the name "Tee Zielsdors" is gone, and the phrase "Anti-Tea Party Demonstrator" has been replaced with "Thousand Oaks Resident". Shady things transpiring indeed…
Whether or not KEYT has been traditionally balanced I honestly couldn't tell you, but I guess all it takes is one wise ass to make you're entire organization look like a clown college – or in other words, par for the course in terms of the MSM.
I agree with the others about a case for slander or something. They need to be held accountable for their blatant LIES.
Relax my friends. It appears there is a bit of a misunderstanding. Mr. Widmyer's name did appear under his interview during one of the newscast. Then during a later newscast they had one woman being interviewed, then Mr. Widmyer again, but instead of his name this time another name popped up. Seems like they had them in wrong order. It was a mistake not intentional. If it were CNN or MSNBC, well…… I'd think differently, but this was small station mix up. Let's focus on bigger fish my fellow Tear Pary friends.
I'm betting on the "agenda" theory.
Here is what happened:
The story was correct at 5pm Matt Widmyer was interviewed and identified by name "Matt Widmyer/Thousand Oaks Resident" on the 5pm newscast. At 6pm, the name of another person who was interviewed appeared mistakenly under Matt Widmyer's name. It was a simple technical error that does occur on stations from A-Z (and yes, Fox News too) People are human.
At last years (4/15/2009) TP in San Jose CA, I genuinely counted at least 2000 participants. A group of 20 or so La Raza counter protesters showed up. The next day the San Jose Mercury News reported a couple hundred folks and falsely reported that the La Raza creeps "surrounded" the other attendees. Thankfully I was there so I could believe my lying eyes.
I think it's time tea party members held local media more accountable. If media reports are slanted or derogatory, we should consider demonstrating outside the local stations. And we should have spokespeople prepared to explain in a polite, firm manner what the problems are. We should also complain to the sponsors of the news programs.
All we are asking for is fair reporting. Americans believe in fair play, and will understand that.
I'd be more willing to buy that it was an honest mistake if the soundbite they chose for him actually represented the greater part of what he told the reporter. They chose to air some out of context portion of their conversation that made him seem like his primary concern was that Tea Partiers were going to cause riots – fake name aside, when you subtitle a guy as an "Anti-Tea Party Protestor" and accompany it with that particular audio clip, the implications are fairly visible in my opinion. If it was a mistake, well so be it – but compound the fake name, chosen audio clip, "Anti-Tea Party" subtitle, and overwhelming tendency of the MSM to associate these things with violence, and I find it extremely hard to buy that it was just one big coincidental error. And let's assume it was one big error. That thing was online for 4 days. If someone who didn't know any better watched it, what thoughts do you think would have crossed their mind? It may not matter much to you because you don't know the guy, but see it from the point of someone who knows this guy, knows his genuine political disposition, and can contrast it against such gross misrepresentation. Even if some fake character was manifested through extreme incompetency, it doesn't diminish it's potential to cause damage in some way.
While I actually agree with your statement that there are bigger fish to fry, the political composure of CNN and MSNBC is pretty well known at this point, and people who are turned off by that aspect tune into alternative sources – one of which being local news stations such as KEYT – so just because they may be smaller scale, it shouldn't exempt them from upholding similar standards of accountability. In fact, one could even argue that base level operations have the greatest potential to propagate widespread sentiment. Let's not forget where the Tea Party movement itself came from.
That being said, I hope your comment about "Tear Party friends" is just a typo and not a Freudian slip.
Thomas Moore Law Center might send them a letter and make them think twice about slandering someone llke this……honor and integrity are lost with the left and this administration. When you have no morals you have no conscience.
Note to Editor: to make your explanations more believable, you may not want to conclude them with a subtle (albeit revealing) swipe at Fox News.
About 40 years or so ago, I happened to be in the lobby of the Senator Hotel in Sacramento. Drew Pearson gave a little speech of some kind. As soon as he left, two different TV stations had their reported sit right near when Pearson had stood; they leaned forward and very earnestly leaned forward, and asked a question into their microphone.
The question referenced something in the speech, but later that evening I watched TV news, and found the reporters question, followed by the statement made by Pearson, long before the question was asked.
No excuses or explanations were given, it looked like an answer was given to the reporters question.
So as I have said many times, The Main Stream Media consists of Scribblers and Babblers.
Pass the Pepto–I think I'm going to be ill….*urp*.
My kid's middle-school news crew does a better job than this!!!

If one of Dad's buds had recorded the interview process, we would have a dynamite compare/contrast video on Youtube of the actual interview and the MinTruth version that was aired.
Does that explain editing his comment into a completely incomprehensible mess that makes it sound like he is protesting against the tea party instead of agreeing with the tea party?
Crap! I hit the wrong thumb! I meant to give you a thumb up and gave you a thumb down. I fully agree with what you said.
And that's why they sliced and diced what he said? "Not only was his interview severely spliced and edited to present some sort of vague, incomprehensible point"
Lol! I hate it when I do that.
When I was stationed in Japan we had a similar issue with anit-American/anti-military protesters outside the main gate to our base every Tuesday morning. After a while I noticed it was the same 20-40 people every week. Then I noticed the local news station getting footage from 20 different angles, and when they spliced it all together it looked like the crowd was in the hundreds or thousands. They always over or under-estimate the crowds based on thier personal agenda.

It's time we started filing lawsuits over this stuff. It has simply got to stop and the only to do it is to put them out of business with class action suits. Any lawyers here got any ideas? Clearly, this stuff has got to be actionable.
I wondered why some guy in sweats had such a nice video camera…the KEYT guy.
Here's some still pics of the Thousand Oaks/Westlake tea party. Yeah, it was definitely devoid of Liberal/Progressive insurgents: twitter.com/PoliticalPAW
there is a Tee Zeilsdorf listed in the Camarillo white pages directory. Sounds like a Dutch name.
the other "poster" is right. tee lives in ventura county. my friend knows her personally and says she is a nice woman, and defintely real. an no, her name isnt "code" for any anti-republican sentiment as someone earlier speculate. in fact, tee thinks this is hilarious but would like it to end. that is how silly rumors start with no proof. my personally, i'm a tea party supporter and think this particular incident got way blown of our proportion. simple mistake and no one was trying to portray anyone differently. let's lend our efforts to real media issues, and not technical error. i'm more oncerned about these banking reguklations now. is anyone else?
well, well… turns out there really is a woman with that name and this was all just a misunderstanding. i saw a link to that story and tee zielsdor did appear on that tv news on their later newscast. so it appears matt widmeyer was properly identified at 5pm, and they accidently put up the name of tee zielsdor at 6pm, and then there she was "live and in person" on the 11pm news. she conspriacy theorist relax. no one was trying to "pull something over anyone".
yes, i support the tea party by we also stand for fairness and it seems that tv station wasn't pulling a fast one afterall.
no, i can't say the same for keith olbermann…
seems to me after reading and looking myself… that people kinda jumped to conclusions about the name of tee zielsdor. it appears she was real and it was an honest tech error all along. the woman did appear on their newscast, and she really exist, and that your father was properly identified with his name on the 5pm news. and tee was properly named at 11pm. just a little goof at six. i agree with the other tea party folks in saying maybe this time we kinda assumed something more when it wasn't. i know i make mistakes and wouldnt want someone calling me a liar, or that i did something evil, wrong… when it was jus a simple error. and as for changing the video they probably just wanted to make sure the right one did show up to prove they weren't trying to falsely identify someone. at least they did the right thing. so, onward and upward and let's keep vigilent, but fair.
STFU
So how do you explain the fact the guy's pro tea party dad's interview was chosen to make him look anti tea party? I hvent really seen anyone address that part…
