Hope springs eternal for the future of the journalism whenever I eat at Tomboy’s Burgers. It’s not only the gloriously greasy burgers and hearty, artery-clogging breakfasts that draw me to Manhattan Beach a couple of weekends a month. It’s the Los Angeles Times and the off chance that those who produce it will wake up and give what should be a great paper new life.
Only a matter of time now
I only read the Times at Tomboy’s, and I can only do so because there is usually a forlorn copy of it lying between the hot sauce and utensils. My subscription lapsed years ago–I’m a casualty of the Times’s limp writing and consistent lefty spin–but something inside me still hopes to one day open up that paper and once again find something worth reading. That did not happen on New Year’s Day. Not by a longshot.
On New Year’s Day, the Times’s lead editorial was its annual 40 or so “Wishes for the New Year.” It was truly thought provoking, except the thought that was provoked was, “who the hell writes this stuff?”
The modern newsroom has evolved from a den of streetwise hacks with little formal education and a taste for booze and broads – guys who knew how to wear a hat – into the neutered, smug, PC clubhouses of today. How else to explain this tepid, tiresome and out-of-touch roster of lefty fantasies and stultifying conventional wisdom? An eight-year-old would weep to read this jejune tripe.
The reflexive liberalism of the Times has been well-documented by fellow L.A. lawyer Patrick Frey of Patterico’s Pontifications, but this is not a complaint about yet another dying liberal op-ed page preaching to a bare, ruined choir loft. The real problem is the editors’ utter detachment from the reality of the very people the Times imagines it serves and who are hemorrhaging from its circulation lists. The “journalists” – really, interchangeable J-school grads who know next to nothing about the city in which they live – dwell in their own time and universe, and simply cannot, or will not comprehend that big, scary, and above all real place that is the Hobbesian world.
Solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short
For example, who among us thinks the Times’s readers share the editors’ wish that politicians will take action in 2010 to reduce the inmate population? California has plenty of problems, but having too many criminals in jail – and not crawling in your bedroom window after midnight – is hardly one of them. Similarly, I’m not sure how their wish for the closure of Guantanamo Bay in favor of incarceration here squares with a measured reduction in prison population. I mean, the editors could not be suggesting that we just let the detainees go. Could they?
Then there’s the snark aimed at the “global warming deniers,” and a wish for “a climate bill that puts a price on carbon emissions, a critical step in preventing a catastrophic rise in global temperatures.” Perhaps I missed the groundswell of support for onerous new taxes based on flimsy pseudo-science that the Times has uncovered. I must have been distracted by my nostalgia for a media that once questioned authority – especially when it is crystal clear that so many in authority are using the “climate change” scam to line their pockets.
The same is true of the wish for a new state tax on oil – yeah, your dwindling subscribers are clamoring for yet another levy. Gas is way too cheap.
Then there is the editors’ fervent wish that everyone would just sit down and agree to the conventional left-of-center wisdom they wholeheartedly embrace. Heaven forbid that in 2010 California experience anything but a “civil, not-too-costly, not-too-pandering race for governor.” Remember that, when used in a Times editorial, “civil” means “don’t point out the liberal’s failures.” The phrase “no too costly” means “let’s limit the Republicans’ advertising spending so the lavish, slobbering free coverage we provide the opponent will be that much more effective.” Finally, the term “not-too-pandering” means, “and certainly don’t think of talking about issues that excite conservatives.”
If you wish for wit, you probably want to skip their wish that “Cheney… return to a secure, remote location.” They would need to wish themselves back to 2002 for that to be clever. I’m always leery of amateurs trying to be funny, and normally I’d just suggest that these newspaper folks keep their day jobs, but in this case, well, you know…
Shhhh… reporters at work
I can help them with their wish for a “smart, funny sitcom.” Tune into NBC on Thursday nights starting at 8:00 p.m. You journalists should appreciate how our championing of the non-political work of liberal stars like 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin demonstrates our commitment to diversity. But if you check out The Goode Family on Comedy Central, its skewing of progressive sacred cows might make you cry.
Journalists, hear me before its too late. Get out into the real world. Challenge your own preconceived notions. Find a guy who you think probably disagrees with you about everything – an American flag sticker on his car is a good indicator – and listen to him. Don’t judge, don’t condescend – hear him out. You don’t have to agree, but that’s not your job.
If you want a future where you won’t hear things like, “Hold the pickles,” or, “Top it off, my good man,” you’d better start being able to relate to the people whose time, attention and money you’re looking to capture. For too long, journalists have evaded the iron discipline of the market that their freelance comrades know only too well. They sit in a big building, type up words, and every two weeks they get a paycheck whether their product is good, bad or pure commie propaganda. That’s all changed – thanks to that hated Internet, you fellows have gone from necessity to option. You have to earn your readers these days. And, even worse, you have to work to keep them.
As is becoming a personal ritual, that well-thumbed copy of the Times went right back on the pile as I left Tomboy’s, an act that brought me no joy. I want a paper that challenges me, not bores me. That informs me, not lectures me. I want a paper that understands the world I live in, not the one imagined at UC Berkeley and the other ivory towers that the Times’s staff never mentally left. I don’t care if its editors are liberal as long as I have to turn to the op-ed page before I know it.
If I could get those things, then I might read the Times between my visits to Tomboy’s. And so might a lot of other people. But until then, their final wish – “A spike in newspaper circulation” – will just be wishful thinking.

The LA Times had a recipe one time about how you can make your own tofu at home. That's the absolute quintessence of useless information I think. No kidding.
I hate them.
Clear, logical and insightful – something I never see in a newspaper save the Journal. Thanks and hope to read you here again.
funny, insightful and definitely a not boring piece!
I can remember (barely) a time when you picked up a paper because it reported the news of the day. The papers of today have blurred the line between editorial and news and that is a dangerous thing to do. That isn't news it's propaganda. I was a child in the 60's but I remember the worship in which many newspersons like Walter Cronkite were held. Newspapers were the only news source and people tended to read and not question. Hindsight is always 20/20 but it is so easy to see where "Uncle Walt" led America astray on Vietnam, where the newspapers rather than reporting that war were championing it's demise and the 60's generation was marching in lock step. I place the blame for the current Democrat/Progressive/Liberal attitude squarely on the shoulders of that over-indulged, over-doped, over-the-top generation. Now these hippie children are running the country….into the ground. They control the media, the entertainment industry, politics, and education. The 60's were a failed experiment and this is a failed generation. I cannot wait until the Gen Xers who are more mature than any of the current bunch take power in a few years. As to newspapers and magazines they are dinosaurs and need to go the way of the fedora industry. I'm angered that the Obama admin is going to bail them out but I understand the underlying tactic of saving his biggest mouthpieces. There are no journalists, only Democrat mouthpieces and I look forward to the day I see these tools standing in the unemployment lines. The new media, in which Breitbart is emerging as one of it's brightest lights, is the future. Newspapers, magazines, and the MSM are so last century. Their time has gone and they need to adapt or learn the expression "you want fries with that?"
I suppose the Times folks figure they will get thrown a lifeline for going along with the program.I know that's the deal Senators Dodd,Nelson,Landrieu and Lincoln figure they have coming after their collective fall. However,as Governor Terminator has discovered, when Barack has finished sqeezing all into pulp you are left staring into the abyss.Great article Kurt.
I read their wish list for the new year. Seriously, they should go out of business.
The only pleasure I get from the LA Times is reading another skewering by Patterico. And this article.
What's black and white and read all over? Conservative news sites across the internet.
A sense of sadness has overcome me. What has happened to journalism? What has happened to the eager cub reporters that once roamed the landscape looking for that next big scoop? Have they all be lulled asleep by the lure of a government job? Did they get part of the stimulus? Pep talk from Rahm? No, they need this web site to get them off their a**es and out there digging. Come on people this is your vehicle.Start the truck and let's go roll over some toes! Like there isn't enough stories out there. I know there's bound to be a lot of blue dresses and botched break-in at campaign offices. Be fearless!
About 50% of the news today is mindless reporting on government. Makes things easy for the reporters.
If there were no newspapers just what would all those idiots do to earn a living?
Times by any other name.
When the single word "Times" is used with reference to newspapers, West Coasters tend to think first of the LA Times.
But, of course, the rest of the Nation immediately thinks of the New York Times.
The Old Gray Lady of journalism still employs some pretty good minds, including Nobel winners. However, unfortunately for the Country, the New York Times is even more lefty than its sister in Southern California.
For example, the Times financial department is aggressively campaigning now for the Obama Administration to spend yet another trillion dollars on bailouts. According to the NY Times, Obama's sin is not taking on enough debt.
Their reasoning is evidently, if only Obama would loosen up with just one more tiny trillion, all would be well.
It's unbelievable to read the material produced by the likes of Paul Krugman. But there it is.
Mr. Krugman says he has a voice and so he is happy.
However, really, what would his status be if he were opposed to more government debt and advocating less government interference in our lives? He wouldn't be writing for the NY Times, Nobel Prize or no.
He would have a job working for the Humboldt Sun, the most outstanding newspaper this side of Winnemucca, Nevada.
I live in a little city with a silly Liberal newspaper that is notorious for screwing up facts, arrogant reporting and of course the obligatory 'keep an eye on Palin and report anything she does as stupid – at least once every week so we can keep some readers'. I won't even go to their online site anymore. Sad, because I would like to know what is going on locally but if it means giving this Lefty rag another hit on their website, forget it. I can live without local news. Besides, I have about 15 blogs I read regularly that report the really important stuff – and report it well.
Congrats on the launch. I didn't think anything could out do Big Gov't, but looks like Big Journalism is going to try!
These folks are going to either be bailed out, or they will eventually follow the money (into more conservative, libertarian themes) in order to survive.
We have already seen CNN and CBS begin to chase the money with the stories on Obamao's lack of transparency.
Good one! I have a running conversation with my retired after decades newspaper friend. My contention is that if W./R. Hearst were alive he would know how to make a newspaper that people would want to read. My friend thinks that no matter what the paper media is dying.
I think they have P.O.ed too many people.
Well, I would say the East coast thinks of the NY Times.
"Big" Journalism, is a voice recognition program (or pogrom, if you prefer), with a speech impediment. There is a tic that requires zombie-like adherence to the leftist playbook. Sort of like a Tourette's victim with a journalisp.
And "big" journalism editors (Andrew, these guys are going to take the "big" as a compliment, mark my words), will not be changing recognition patterns any time soon. Protest inertia is four decades old and shows no signs of evaporating.
If newspapers go out of business, what will I use to mask things when I spray paint?
The msm have degenerated into nothing more than a propaganda organ for progressive/socialist policies. They are presstitutes of the lowest order.
I doubt anything can save the newspapers as long as they refuse to do actual reporting and insist on activist reporting. My city has 2 papers, one left leaning and one that clams to lean right. Both offer insipid and activist related reporting although the right leaning paper does have some decent investigative reports on corruption in government once in a while that the left leaning paper refuses to cover in the Democrat controlled area they both cover.
I guess the question is whether the MSM is really so committed to the leftist ideology that they are willing to go out of business. So far it appears they would rather go under.
What should we call this phenomenon? "Lemming Journalism?"
quoting – "Journalists, hear me before its too late. Get out into the real world. Challenge your own preconceived notions. Find a guy who you think probably disagrees with you about everything – an American flag sticker on his car is a good indicator – and listen to him. Don’t judge, don’t condescend – hear him out. You don’t have to agree, but that’s not your job."
it'll never happen. 'journalism' students are there because they want to 'make a difference'. it has NOTHING to do with maybe uh, reporting the facts? we have to undo the brainwashing machine in academia before we stand a chance at getting some real journalists out of the 'mainstream' academic system. of course there are exceptions to every rule, and we are blessed with some journalists still (Brit Hume) that are more concerned with finding the facts and presenting them in an unbiased way, but the breed is becoming extinct.
hooray for bigjournalism.com – hooray for biggovernment.com – horray for bighollywood.com!!
Dear Kurt,
Unfortunately, the curse of poor journalism is not limited to the left coast. In Atlanta, we have the Jaculation and Constipation (sic, Journal and Constitution). I can only think of one useful means for this newspaper, however Charmin was on sale and it feels better. Please keep up the great work.
It seems so strange to me that the elitists at the LA Times, NY Times, Boston Globe, et al, hold themselves above the unwashed masses, yet can't see the trees for the forest when it comes to editorial content and presenting an unbiased evaluation of the news. As others above have noted, would they rather allow their ships to sink than make an effort to publish a daily that would appeal to all, versus a select percentage of liberals?
Newspapers may have gone the way of the Edsel, but even a well-restored Edsel can be savored and inspire conversation. Personally, I always enjoyed a good newspaper with my morning coffee, but now I am forced to use my laptop, because I refuse to start my day frustrated and angry.
Why can't newspaper management and editors understand that you can't piss-off 50% of your readership on a daily basis and still remain in business?
And now they want to be bailed out by those they've chased away. It makes no sense to me.
Fifty per cent of your readership? No, it's way more than that. The latest Rasmussen Poll says twice as many people consider themselves conservative as liberal. But somehow the numbers don't register with the MSM.
Wow. The trolls are out, already, hitting the thumbs-down buttons.
Well, I can fix that.
The whole problem is a part of the seizing of the Academy by the left in the 60s and 70s. The Academy has been far left and getting worse longer than anyone can remember. Journalism degrees share this problem. The only decent journalists in the whole country, never went to journalism school..think about it. Krauthammer, Barone, People today who do well in journalism cover their own area of expertise. The problem with journalists is that they think they are elites, but like people in education, they study method and social action, but they don't fricken KNOW anything at all. Religion editors are leftists with an ax to grind who know nothing about religion. Climate "reporters" or environmental reporters know nothing about earth science and then "report" Al Gore's every thought for me. They are stupid and corrupt whores. Enough. Also, the fact that you can buy the NYTimes in the rest of the country camouflages the fact that the rest of the silly left wing newspapers in the country just get their biased crap from the Times and sell you that. So, basically, you get to hear the NYT twice in your town. Don't let Obama bail these bastards out with our money.

This post was mentioned on Twitter by KASchlicht: My first piece on Big Journalism: Hope Springs Eternal for the L.A. Times Editorial Board http://is.gd/5TijF…
A long, long time ago my family moved from Studio City (well, as the name implies close to Universal Studios) to the Central Valley of CA. My mother missed Los Angeles so much she kept her subscription to the Times for a good 2-3 years to remind her of "home".
But that was a long time ago.
The liberal newspaper establishment will die kicking and snarling at us "bitter God and Guns teabaggers" convinced of their complete moral and intellectual superiority.
They have no great allegiance to God or Country, so their desire to bring about a "New World Order" is the defining purpose of their lives and what they are willing to die for.
Metaphorically, that is – I don't see Frank Rich or Eugene Robinson goin' over the top of a trench anytime soon.
"presstitutes " I vote we make that the new word of the year. It is sooo true the papers have become the whores of the left. The temple attendants of the socialists, ready to spread their legs to receive the offerings of the day.
I agree! We should start a "save a journalist from global extinction" movement. I bet polar bears out number true journalist.
Every two months the St Petersburg Times in Florida mails me a subscription letter with postage paid envelope in it. I congragulate them for their glowing coverage of this administration and enjoy sending back their envelope with a nasty message that I won't subscribe to their liberal rag.
For years, my hubby and I subscribed to the LA Times. Like the author of this article, we tired of the all too obvious left slant to the news reporting. We dropped our subscription to the LA Times as well as the magazine Newsweek for the same reason. We do subscribe to World Magazine. It is a Christian magazine focusing on news reporting. What I appreciate about the magazine is that it admits to the reader it is focusing on news from a reformed Christian worldview. That being said, the magazine castigates both right and left of the spectrum if needed. I appreciate this magazine because I know the foundation of its view which I choose to purchase. I am sick and tired of the MSM trying to tell me I am getting an objective analysis of the day's news when that is not the reality. Until the MSM quits treating me like an imbecile who can't figure out reality, I will do like so many others and look elsewhere for my news coverage.
The only reason I visit the LA Slime's website is for Jon Weisman's Dodger Thoughts blog. I cannot read their version of "news" without blowing a gasket.
Remember when newspapers just reported the news, all of it? Remember when MTV used to play music? Yeah, me neither.
"Get out into the real world. Challenge your own preconceived notions…..
First they would have to recognize their preconceived notions, which is not as easy as it sounds. There's a much simpler prescription. Give us less journalism and more reporting. Quit passing every story through the lens of partisan politics.
One of the few advantages large media outfits still have over most internet entities is the ability to deploy boots on the ground — combined with access to events and high powered personalities. Unfortunately, when struggling newspapers tighten their belts, the first folks to go are the reporters with special expertise and experience, in favor of J-School generalists.
We may enjoy the MSM comeuppance, but we still need them. A huge percentage of the news being passed around and discussed on the web is still being provided by the big boys. The net is great for analysis, fact checking, and instant access to individuals, often including dissidents, all over the world when stories heat up. The Michael Yons and Claudia Rossetts are still few and far between, however. Imagine the work they could produce with access, funding and support from the majors — if left unfettered by stultifying editorial direction. Imagine the New York Times fully staffed with experienced hands like John Burns in disciplines across the board. I'd actually be willing to pay for that kind of reporting.
Who needs to pay for opinion? Especially when the NYTimes editorial board doesn't even seem to read its own putative news pages before promulgating their official positions. I can get better informed editorials (see: Wall St. Journal) and all the political confirmation bias I want elsewhere.
Absent their old corps of bona fide reporters, Jill Abramson et al would, indeed, be well advised to "monitor" the net (Breitbart!), not just for "bubbling controversies," but for bubbling stories. worth pursuing. It's been clear for years that FoxNews does just that. Ironically, Keller/Abramson and their ilk disdain organizations like Fox for conservative slant, when a key piece of the successful MSM model staring them in the face is coverage of the very stories that their paper ignores.
The collected Times are not being killed by competition from the internet and "opinion media." They are committing suicide, and their demise would, in fact, represent a serious loss. It is my hope that Big Journalism will not content itself with sticking forks in the MSM, which is just not that hard to do, but will ultimately "save" big media by arguing successfully for reform. That's something that Mr. Breitbart might be able to accomplish which the blogosphere has not, despite years of complaint.
Leave the LA Times alone. I need the paper to start my BBQ.
Wow! No joke: what a phenomenally entertaining and insightful piece, just like the many other articles on this new site. Really, I would gladly become a paid subscriber to any magazine or newsweekly that offered such well-written content. Happily for me, I can simply come here for and get informed and entertained for free…yay for me!
Wow! Do you live in my town? You just described our hometown rag and why we no longer subscribe to it. I have to admit that it is somewhat satisfying to listen to them gasp and bleat when they call up and I tell them exactly why we no longer take the paper, but ultimately I feel depressed because you know they just don't get it.
"Presstitutes"–my new favorite word! Definitely putting that one into circulation whenever I can. Thanks for that.
"I’m always leery of amateurs trying to be funny," I thought I was kinda funny. But hey. You guys are the pros and we are the blathering hacks.
"I want a paper that challenges me, not bores me." Aren't you contributing to one now?
You have to be a journalism school drop-out to produce such an imaginative, informative, and interesting article, Mr Schlichter. /sarc
Great piece. Much enjoyed.
Kurt, you've been able to mirror my thoughts on the so called fourth estate. Lame, lazy lib reporting parroting the party line in page after page. No expose on the massive corruption that is strangling every hamlet in the union. No balance, just pandering to the greens/climate change/pro union agenda. I too lapsed the paper, in ala LA Times mirror image on a smaller scale. (owned by them) And it it sad, in that I too pick up an occasional copy looking for refreshing commentary, only to find the latest onslaught for carbon credits. And if the damned thing gets any smaller, magnifying glasses should accompany the purchase. I, too am looking forward to this site.
LOL man, you're obsession with guys that "know how to wear a hat" is creepy as hell.
Another sick, twisted, paranoid repubutard. Keep up the good work. You make you and your ilk look dumber with each passing day. Thank God I'm not one of you.
Actually, I agree with your friend, newspapers are going the way of the dodo.
Firstly, newspaper publishers have alienated many of their readers with their left-leaning bias. Secondly, the next generation of news consumers don't read newspapers — it's all digital with them.
And for good a reason… by the time a newspaper hits the newsstand, it's yesterdays news!
As a conservative, every time I pick up a rag like the LA TIMES, my intelligence, and or my values, are usually insulted. Sometimes I'm most insulted by what they didn't print, what they chose to ignore, in hopes of killing a story.
Given the drivel that the LA Times puts out, can't we just encourage them to get it over with?
I mean, they're all freak-@ss liberals anyhow, what if we just encouraged them to all head to Guyana with a crate of Koolaid…
of course, with our luck, they'll end up in Colombia, shack up with the FARC or Shining Path, and end up breeding a new batch of braindead terrorists.
D!LD0 POLISHING? FLATULENCE HUSBANDRY? FLAT TIRE DECORATION?
THESE MIGHT ALSO BE USEFUL REFERENCES…THEY'RE ALL IMPROBABLE AND HAVE NO VALUE WHATSOEVER.
I dropped the LA Times about 7 years ago. The Wall Street Journal kicks a**. My watershed moment with the Times was not about politics, but it was after the Tribune bought it and assigned midwestern reporters to local stories. One turned in an embarrassing, fawning starstruck piece about Hollywood which lacked any sophistication or knowledge, and another wrote somberly about "the Alley" where poor folks bought cheap goods. the Alley is the Santee Alley, a lively spot two blocks from the Times downtown offices, thronged with people of all levels of society buying knockoffs and seconds from the fashion jobbers which are three blocks from the Times offices. What idiots the writer, and her editor, showed themselves to be. A big problem was the exiting of good editors (too expensive and opinionated) who knew their beats and cities, and went to bat against the publishers and mega media companies which wrote the checks and had zero local interest.
But mainly, being a good reporter is hard. Why do you think they all drank and smoked themselves to death back in the day?
Good points. I find it even more hilarious when reading their websites. They'll write stories that are should be written for the NY Times SE, then 90% of their comments will be from people calling out their bias. Newspapers, of course, don't do anything about this.
The most recent article I read where this happened was when the LA Times posted a study done by a professor from UCLA stating that illegal immigration (sorry, "undocumented immigrants") HELPS the economy and we should give amnesty to these people because they will boost our economy. The vast majority of the comments denied this, and lacked the racial tone that one would expect a elitist would charge because the fact of the matter is illegal is illegal.
A few years ago, my local paper (The Austin-American Statesman) was hustling me for a new subscription. I told them "No", and explained that I thought they were too liberal. Their reply was "Liberal? Oh, we fired that guy!"
They just don't get it.
I applaud your diligence in not contributing hits to liberal websites. I try not to support them, too, but now and then I do click over to Huff Post. It is so mindless and depraved, like two teenagers speeding down the street, one guy blabbing on a cellphone while the other guy gives him a blow job, destined to obliterate a nice middle-aged family stopped at the light ahead, I just have to stop and watch the disaster play out.
Maybe, but when you see a hat worn just right, oh, 'tis a thing of beauty.
What's my excuse?
2 points:
1) I doubt the average reporter has the slightest sense of the market – reporters make GM's management look brillant (destroy your market and not know why, complain no one buys your product)
2) I've a reasonably bright 16 year old grandson who can write a complete sentence – give him 30 minutes and he is better than even the most "brillant" left-wing reporter/opinionator!
i am thinking of calling the Times and seeing if i can just get the sports section, that seems to be the only part of the paper that is not slanted to the left..
So it seems evident that newspapers are trying to stay afloat by-
Cutting the size of the paper in half(they did that with my local paper).
And
Keeping only the lowest paid people.
Who insult their readers, and criticize their advertisers(those dirty capitalists, why do we need money to run a paper).
There might come a day when (Insert name of paper here) will only be on an 8.5 x 11 paper(one side and double spaced).
The Daily Breeze is almost as bad as the LA Times, but the LA Times gets more coverage since it is a bigger newspaper. Newspapers are run by naive college grads who think that their way is the way. They won't learn, but I blame their professors who obviously didn't instill in them the idea of a free market. When LA Times called me to try to get me to renew my subscription I told them that they lost me when they endorsed Obama.
"I can help them with their wish for a “smart, funny sitcom.” Tune into NBC on Thursday nights starting at 8:00 p.m. You journalists should appreciate how our championing of the non-political work of liberal stars like 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin demonstrates our commitment to diversity."
30 Rock is not funny, nor is it non-political. Alec Baldwin's character is a leftists caricature of a republican who often justifies his views by avarice or social darwinism. Tine Fey's character is a leftist's charicature of a leftist, a pie in the sky dreamer detached from reality – with a heart in the right place (awww). No person, previously unfamiliar with politics, who watched every episode of 30 rock as their education, would choose the republican side (except for a sociopath). And they would be very aware of both sides by the end of their viewings.
I really liked that post, I am a little confused, and have a small question. Can I send you an email?

I miss a good paper. But I cancelled the LAT last year. And this piece sums up the reasons: they don't do "news." They are "journalists" at the Times, meaning the eschew news and favor "pieces." I don't want "pieces." But they ave me 30 years of endless hectoring by george skelton to raise taxes. Slanted reporting on everything from local news (what little there is), to the national stuff. Taxes are good! Prop 13 is bad! Three Strikes is bad! They cover economics like its a tennis game, reporting without depth or context. Numbers are UP! No down! Up again! It took them 30 years to cover LAUSD's inability to fire teachers–after the New Yorker ran a piece on the NY schools. But they found time to do a "fondling" investigation on Arnold when he ran. Endless fawning pieces on Obama–but they missed the crucial need for the propositions in 2005 limiting union benefits which is bankrupting the state. Sad. The Times ould ahve been a great thing for the city. Now they "report" press releases. I still pick it up now and then. Sadly, it hasn't changed much at all.
