Why did Game Change authors, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann keep quiet on one of the 2008 campaign’s juiciest stories–only to spill the beans eighteen months later?
More importantly, why did they tell their readers about the John Edwards scandal only after it became personally profitable to do so?
Political reporters Halperin and Heilemann signed their book deal in June 2008, reportedly for a “mid- to high- six-figure sum.”co-authors of the ubiquitous political tell-all, Game Change. Sprinkled amongst this cornucopia of unsourced gossip, rumor, whispers and innuendo are nuggets of hard news, particularly about former 2008 Democrat presidential candidate John Edwards.

Of particular interest was the following passage, from the excerpt published by Heilemann’s employer, New York :
The details in the article around Young’s involvement were as squirrelly as could be. The Enquirer reported that Hunter was living in a rented house near the home of Young, his wife, and his children in Governors Club, a gated community in Chapel Hill. When an Enquirer reporter confronted Young face to face, he first denied his identity and knowing Hunter—this despite the fact that the car she was driving was registered in his name—before announcing the next day through his attorney that he was the sire of the unborn baby. Drawing out the obvious implication, the story noted, “Some insiders wonder whether Young’s paternity claim is simply a cover-up to protect his longtime pal Edwards.”
The new Enquirer piece rocked the campaign to its core. Crazy as it sounded, the idea that Young was taking the fall for John had the deafening ring of truth. An attorney in his forties, Young had a history of run-ins with the law and a rumored alcohol problem.
No doubt about it: these are eye-opening revelations. But did these “squirrelly details” and “crazy” ideas set off any alarm bells for the politically-connected reporters? Did they share any of these impressions with the readers of Time Magazine or New York? How did the authors react at the time?
In a word: silence. Not a word from either Mark Halperin or John Heilemann. Actually, nothing until John Edwards gave them and the rest of the MSM permission to write about the affair eight months later–when he “confessed” to what had been obvious to everybody on August 8, 2008, on ABC’s Nightline.
Game Change describes the mainstream media’s reaction to the National Enquirer’s Edwards story that appeared in October 2007.
Out of view, the Edwards campaign was in damage-control mode, going into overdrive to dissuade the mainstream media from picking up the story, denouncing it as tabloid trash. Their efforts at containing the fallout were remarkably successful. The Enquirer’s exposé gained zero traction in the traditional press and almost none in the blogosphere.
Halperin and Heilemann were both partly responsible for the exposé gaining “zero traction in the traditional press”, both then and for months afterwards. At a time when a prominent Democrat presidential candidate was engaged in “self-destructive behavior”, these reporters used their national platforms to ensure their readers knew nothing of it.
In effect, they allowed the Edwards campaign to dictate what they wrote. Heilemann wrote in November 2007 of “riding with Edwards in his rented white minivan on the road to Hanover (IA) for a forum at Dartmouth.” So he had access to the candidate. Why didn’t he ask him about the scandal? Or did Heilemann ask–and choose not to inform his readers? Was he afraid of losing his access, the lifeblood of political reporting?
We searched both the archives of Time and New York magazine, but found nothing either had written on the scandal when Americans were looking for news of the affair (”Rielle Hunter” was the No. 1 search term on Google for parts of twelve days in December 2007) and starting the process of choosing a presidential candidate for the Democrats. And Edwards, who had been Sen. John Kerry’s running mate in 2004, was one of the front-runners.

But, now that it no longer matters, neither reporter has a problem picking over the carcass of the story for publicity and profit. Halperin, speaking on Good Morning America, said:
In fact, in the case of John Edwards and some of the other stories we wrote about in the book, even though reporters had an inkling, even though a lot of insiders had inklings, a lot of that stuff stayed secret, didn’t impact the campaign.
Both reporters participated in the media blackout of the scandal, helping ensure that it didn’t “impact the campaign”. Neither reporter alerted readers of this potential “Game Change.”
So why now? Why sit on information which could have made a difference to voters had they known about it during the campaign? Why is that same information now grist for Game Change’s publicity tour?
MRC’s Scott Whitlock on Halperin and Heilemann’s GMA appearance:
Stephanopoulos failed to ask the obvious question, why reveal damaging information now, when John Edwards’ career is over, but not when it would be politically damaging to the Democrat?
Was it ideological bias that kept Mark Halperin and John Heilemann silent while Americans were searching for the very information the authors were keeping under wraps? Or was it fear of losing access, indifference to readers or a desire to maximize future earnings?
Only the authors know the answer to these questions.

we would have been surprised- no, make that shocked- had this lot 'outed' Edwards and possibly affected a liberal election outcome…
Of course, now that it means nothing and Edwards is relegated to the dustbin of failed celebrity they can dish, dish, dish. Halperin particularly tries to maintain a semblence of impartiality that he most assuredly does not deserve.
The authors know? You bet…
If the media reported the Hunter-Edwards affair in 2007, Mr Edwards would have never won the primaries in January 2008 and, subsequently, Mr. Obama would have never been the nominee (or president).
I am surprised the Clinton camp is so sanguine about this.
"Or was it fear of losing access, indifference to readers or a desire to maximize future earnings?"
If this is a multiple choice quiz, I'll pick number three: desire to maximize future earnings. The MSM, the Press, and Journalists in general are nothing more than sold out, dried up whores. Hopefully, Big Journalism will bring some fresh blood into the fray. The old gene pool has certainly stagnated, and become corrupt.
Always check the motives; it is usually money……………..
First, let's have a little history lesson. Mark Halperin and Evan Thomas are red diaper babies…having grown up under radical extremism in their lineage for decades. Evan Thomas' grandfather, Norman…ran as the Socialist candidate for President and other offices for years. He held a job at Newsweek that influenced what was published and what was not. He also said the media gave candidates on the left side of the political spectrum a 15% advantage before the race was begun. He was excoriated for telling the truth and backed down.
Halperin…according to this article from David Horowitz' FrontPage Magazine,
http://97.74.65.51/readArticle.aspx?ARTID=10987
tells us all we need to know about what Halperin believes is the duty of the "news" organizations when covering a Repubican vs. a liberal Democrat.
"Mark Halperin “has been the Political Director of ABC News since 1997 and has covered politics and campaigns through four election cycles,” reads one of his 2004 biographies posted by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). “As Political Director, Halperin is responsible for the planning and editorial content of all political news on the network.”
“Halperin manages the editorial coverage of politics throughout the ABC News universe,” says another official ABC biography, “and contributes frequently to ABC News broadcasts.”
Mark Halperin weeks before the 2004 presidential election issued his October 8 internal memo to the staff of ABC News that, when it became public, stirred controversy. Critics charged that Halperin was directing ABC reporters to tilt their coverage – telling them, in effect, to ignore or minimize misstatements by Democrat Senator John F. Kerry but to attack any misstatements by Republican President George W. Bush.
Halperin’s memo claimed that the Bush campaign was trying “to get away with as much as possible….” No comparable criticism was made of Democratic candidate Kerry.
“The New York Times (Nagourney/Stevenson) and Howard Fineman on the web both make the same point today: the current Bush attacks on Kerry involve distortions and taking things out of context in a way that goes beyond what Kerry has done,” wrote Halperin.
“Kerry distorts, takes out of context, and [makes] mistakes all the time, but these are not central to his efforts to win.
“We have a responsibility,” Halperin, then 39, continued, “to hold both sides accountable to the public interest, but that doesn’t mean we reflexively and artificially hold both sides ‘equally’ accountable when the facts don’t warrant that.
“I’m sure many of you have this week felt the stepped up Bush efforts to complain about our coverage. This is all part of their efforts to get away with as much as possible with the stepped up, renewed efforts to win the election by destroying Senator Kerry at least partly through distortions.
“It’s up to Kerry to defend himself, of course,” wrote Halperin. “But as one of the few news organizations with the skill and strength to help voters evaluate what the candidates are saying to serve the public interest. Now is the time for all of us to step up and do that right.”
Mark Halperin’s idea of what is right may be what is Left. He was born in 1965 in Bethesda, Maryland, the red-diaper baby of hard-Left-connected controversial foreign policy specialist Morton Halperin. This fact reveals an entire Left-spin universe in which Mark grew up exposed to his father’s comrades and radical ideas.
Morton Halperin today is Senior Vice President of the left-wing Center for American Progress (CAP) and Director of the Open Society Policy Center established by eccentric billionaire international financier George Soros."
Was it ideological bias that kept Mark Halperin and John Heilemann silent while Americans were searching for the very information the authors were keeping under wraps? Or was it fear of losing access, indifference to readers or a desire to maximize future earnings?
Only the authors know the answer to these questions.
You're kidding, right… Mondo? This is a rhetorical flourish, this question and answer…correct?
Had Edwards been running to Obama's right in the primaries, odds are higher someone in the media would have decided the Hunter story had to be brought out. But Edwards actually ran to Obama's left and had many of the most partisan Democratic Party activists on his side, so that gave him a layer of protection that, say, John McCain didn't have when the New York Times ran their stories on his alleged affair during the primary season.
As far as Edwards finally getting his in "Game Change", along with Hillary, Biden, Reid, McCain and Palin, think of the book's narrative as having been drawn up between the end of the 2008 campaign and the first half of 2009, when the conventional wisdom was the nation and the world would all be tamed and enraptured by the magnificence of the new president, and it makes more sense. The book's basically a love letter to Barack Obama that, instead of speaking Truth to The New Power, nuzzles up to it and oozes admiration in hopes of maintaining or improving access to the White House for some future book deal (though if the left keeps getting irked at Obama's wimpiness, a future book by Halperin and Heilemann may be a little rougher on the president).
The rhetoric of political discourse has become increasingly coarse in recent years. While disagreement can be robust and animated we should all try to leaven our commentary with reasoned temperance. That said, it's hard to imagine a better description of these two than scum bags.
[...] MORE: By happenstance, I discuss Halperin/Heilemann’s silence on Edwards then and their loose lips now that they have a book to promote at Big Journalism today: Game-Changer: Why Did Reporters Keep Silent About Edwards? [...]
Want to bet that Mark Halperin and John Heilemann if Edwards got lucky and hadn't been derailed in the primaries and stood on the threshold of the White House would have along with Edward's aids kept their mouths shut? Everyone on the road with Edwards and Hunter know what was going on. They are all unethical creeps.
Halperin's and Heilemann's selective silence, their lack of ethics and responsibilty to the public defines the sorry state of journalism today. The pervasive lefty journalism ploy is one of omissions and like Stalin's quip "no man, no problem" our state sponsored elitist journo caste uses no story, no scandal to advance the liberal agenda.
When this sad chapter in polical corruption ends here's hoping it takes down the MS finally . At least half of the American public holds them in contempt now.
Halperin and Thomas enjoy the cover of 'reporters'. But simply put, they function as desinformatziya specialists for the political Left, and undoubtedly chose journalism as the strongest position from which to exercise that expertise.
It's naive to believe that hosts of other 'reporters' do not function in a similar manner.
I think these two reporters are unethical creeps that give honest, hardworking journalists a very bad name……..almost like many politicians!!!!!!!!!
hahaha….Rhetorical flourish to your rhetorical question!
I will only say, "I have my suspicions!"
Thanks!

I won't buy this book. Why enrich the wallets of this truth- challenged twosome. Wonder what Karma is in store for them?
Remember when Edwards "confessed" during the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics?
There's also the point that this information might have been a lot more valuable to the writers, leverage wise, had Edwards won, which it seems obvious that they were pulling for.
Imagine the access you would have to the president and staff as well as first dibs on stories holding that Ace in the hole.
There are a lot of reasons why it would be more valuable to Halperin and Thomas at a later point. At least that one is a little less ideological and biased, and more based on furthering their own careers. A lot of smart people might have held that one under their hat to leverage much bigger things down the road. They obviously didn't know at the time that Edwards was not going to win.
Either way they're still slimeballs.
I do not intend to buy or read this book. But I did see a quote from it to the effect that "only Mr. and Mrs. 44" had had no worries about allegations of infidelity. Just. One. Minute. I don't remember the woman's name, but there was a story that O had become very friendly with a campaign worker who had been spirited off to a Caribbean island hideaway favored by the Daley Machine. Needless to say, the story didn't have legs.
Agree … the shock would have been the reporting … not the story
"Was it ideological bias…Or was it fear of losing access"
What is the difference? A SELLOUT is just a SELLOUT.
Many people have to make a choice. If your social setting is West LA do you ever show disdain for a Podesta-driven agenda (er The Hungarian Crusade to destroy the USA). Not if you want to keep hitting the best parties. (hotties too but total idiots). Not being a total sellout has its price if you want to look in the mirror.
Mark Halperin and John Heilemann sat silent on a man I best can describe as a Snake Oil Saleman – who happened to be on a ticket that put him one bullet from the POTUS.
And you keep that secret? Shame will come.
At least not like michelle's (according to MSM)
"Imagine the access you would have to the president and staff as well as first dibs on stories holding that Ace in the hole."
Course, they might have just "disappeared!"
It needs to be noted that all of a sudden, a MSM political book hits the stands and it is #1 on NYT best-seller lists, etc and we can’t go 30 minutes without a news talk show discussing its contents or hearing interviews with the authors…
For the past many, many months we have had #1 best-sellers by conservative authors and these books and authors were totally ignored or panned by the MSM. Again, it’s absolutely no surprise but it just goes to show what the MSM does. In fact, there was/is talk that the NYTimes will do away with their ranking list or modify it greatly so that much less attention would be given to conservative books/authors. That’s no surprise either!
I suspect it was more of holding out for access than anything else. I’m just guessing though. I remember hearing that plenty in the media had heard the rumblings, but didn’t go with it because the initial reporting came from the Enquirer. The story should have come out though – a little digging and I’m sure they would have had enough to go on w/o using Enquirer facts.
If this doesnt show you how IDEOLOGY matters more than ANYTHING to a red diaper doper baby. What Im least surprised about here is the reaction of Elizabeth Edwards, who wants everyones sympathy for her cancer while cynically exploiting it for political points. As far as im concerned , that worthless political whore is no better than Hilldebeast Patsy Schroder Donna Brazille or any of the other worthless political sluts of the left, who put there IDEOLOGY ahead of there own families and have absolutely NO VALUES other than gaining a favorite political position, no matter HOW they accomplish it. These left wing “women”(for lack of a better term) remind me of EVA BRAUN in the bunker with Adolph Hitler.
An even better question is : Since they have dirt on everyone else and their Grandma who was on the campaign trail, where is the dirt on the Dali Bama?
As far as the two “reporters” go-they deserve about as much credability as Jeremiah Wright.
As a former bat-shit crazy gutter-talk spewing maniac I can definitely say yes, they sat on the story at first to protect Edwards. And the only reason they're spilling their guts now is for money.
It's never a proper use of time trying to decipher the interests and actions of modern liberals. It's all about power, money, and access.
Imagine the stories they have on democratic politicians that they're still sitting on for access?
You know that ALL of that juicy stuff on the Obamas and their campaign is not only deep-sixed for at least 50 years, it may have been encoded so only a Navajo in Key West can decipher the info!
"Why did reporters…….." ? Why do birds suddenly appear, every time you walk near? Why do fools fall in lo-ove?
These are all questions for the ages.
I'm just thinking that somebody somewhere KNOWS something and at the rate Obummer is dropping, I am waiting for a little bird to start singing. You cannot hide that much stuff for too and not have SOMETHING come out.
One would think that when writing a book dishing the dirt, you would appear more credible if you NAMED sources.
"One would think that when writing a book dishing the dirt, you would appear more credible if you NAMED sources. "
"Not naming sources" was EXACTLY the reason the MSM gave for not giving one word of support to the National Enquirer's detailed description of what was going on in the Edwards' campaign in December 2007. It was more than that of course. It was only weeks later that the NY Times carried out their John McCain-Vicki Iseman hit job with a great deal less than the Enquirer had already compiled on Edwards.
To the Mainstream Mouthpiece Media, it's all about the ideology, Baby!
Is it my imagination or are there no liberal posting on this story????????????
Cowboy you got it right as rain. Follow the money.
LOL. I thought so!
Any voter who couldn't see thru the phony, swarmy, condecending persona of John Edwards, should have their voter registration card taken away…
Mark Levin and Sarah Palin only the two latest example…
Stephy gets a pass too- by not asking they questions about why they withheld info at the time. All demos and the national media are corrupt. A pox on all their houses. See how many report from Haiti. They are scared of hard news.
Frankie
Not covering this story may likely have cost Hillary Clinton the election. If John Edwards were eliminated as a candidate based on his scandalous behavior, those who voted for him, very likely would have chosen to vote for Hillary instead. Without splitting votes with Edwards, she may have won the primary, and become the Democratic party nominee. Those who chose not to report what they knew may have changed the course of U.S. History. Shameful. (And I don't like Hillary)
While Edwards was our US Senator from North Carolina (in name only because he spent all of his time campaigning for President), we learned what a phony little jerk he was .. in fact, there were many people who demanded he return the salary he'd been paid for not representing us. He didn't worry about running for re-election to the Senate because we were on to him by then, but the news that he was having an affair — indeed had fathered a child — was shocking because he is such a girly guy. I saw the videos on U-Tube that Rielle Hunter had shot of him, and it was soooo obvious that they had a "special" relationship. Edwards was not good at covering, and I suspect a whole lot of people knew from the start and very possibly did change the course of history.
Edwards was rotting scum, and he apparently attracted swarms of insects who enjoyed the smell.
again, the media decided that edwards, as in the case of obozo, was worthy of protecting ………… for the good of the country
typical for the msm
the real Americans know that the entire obozo media functions to give cover to obozo and any/all liberal leaders
Oh (yawn) the media is talking about itself … again!
Compare and contrast the media's coverage of a rumor of John McCain's infidelity and the non coverage, indeed cover up of this dirtball and his blatant affair and spin. The media went right into the tank for Edwards, repeating his spin as truth until it became impossible to do it any longer. Then, they write a book and make big bucks from it.
Edwards gives me douche chills. What a scumbag. "Elizabeth is right here, all the time" (Pointing at his heart). Wow.
it was, and is quite transparent…
Edwards siphoned off enough votes to knock Billary out of the primaries so now we have Obama. This is journalistic malpractice..again. The press did not inform us on what a freak and sex addict Bill Clinton was. The press did not inform us on the backgrounds of the Clintons ON PURPOSE.
Also, this was a GREAT comment that had a great deal of useful, helpful information. I forgot to thank you for it when it first appeared.
People insist on avoiding the simplest explanation. But Dustrider and onecent have it right.
The major media ignored the Edwards story because it would have hurt an important Democrat. One who might become President. Edwards looks like roadkill today but he didn't then.
Since he is unlikely to ever again have much influence it is OK to make money by kicking him.
The pattern of media favoring the Democrats is very consistent. Most people in the media seem to favor that party. That does not mean every reporter, commentator, or editor does, it just means the scales are weighted that way.
Somehow otherwise sensible people keep believing the media strives to be neutral and objective. That does not match experience. We can say it is closer to faith:
"The substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen.

Thanks for writing about this. You’ve got a lot of fantastic information here on your website. I’m impressed! I try to keep a couple blogs somewhat current myself but it’s a struggle sometimes. You’ve done a great job with this one. How do you do it?
I must agree with what was discussed but there are many ways to save and protect yourself and your home. Gutter Protection is an easy solution to problems associated with gutters that stop flowing because of clogs. Gutter guards are very cost effective compared to the cost having your home waterproofed would be.
