To “storyboard the news” is to replace straight news reporting with a pre-shaped comic-book narrative, an edited fable sustained by selective reporting.
Victims of media fraud suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder will be excused for hearing the phrase as a riff on Guantanamo, that “storyboarding the news” occurs when the MSM submerges the facts underwater until the truth surrenders.

The truth about Honduras – such as why the so-called “coup” was not a coup at all – was left by the MSM on the cutting-room floor, edited out of the news reporting because it did not fit into the storyboard.
A storyboard is a sequence of pictures that tell a story, like a comic strip. In Hollywood or on Madison Avenue, the storyboard is used as a production guide for building a narrative. In the hands of the MSM, the narrative becomes a news fable in which what gets left out is just as important as what gets included, and the story is frequently written years before the events themselves unfold.
Hence, the 2009 Honduras news fable can be seen as a sequence of iconic images:
1. An enlightened reformer is elected by the people to take on a corrupt establishment:

2. Though from a wealthy family, he tries to fight injustice, siding with the poor:

3. The rich and powerful exploiters turn against him:

4. The armed forces, under the orders of the elite, stage a coup:

5. A military dictatorship is installed, unleashing brutal repression on the democratic forces:

6. The masses struggle to escape the boot of their oppressors.

But that is not what happened.
The real story is that over the course of months, by abusing his power, attacking other institutions, and pushing forward with an illegal re-election plan, President Mel Zelaya generated a political crisis. As things came to a head in the final days of June 2009, the judiciary invoked the constitution (which is very different than that of the U.S.), which acted as it was designed to: it protected democracy by lawfully removing from office a miscreant president.
The ouster of Zelaya was overwhelmingly supported by all the major public and civil institutions of Honduras including the legislature, the judicial branch, the political parties, the Catholic Church, the Evangelical churches, the media, the private sector, and, yes, the armed forces (which under Article 272 of their constitution is assigned a legitimate role in protecting democracy in Honduras and preventing presidents from become dictators).
In arresting Mel Zelaya, the armed forces did not take matters into their own hands, but in fact executed a court order. Their work done, they exited the political stage and took no part in the civilian government that succeeded Zelaya.
Much has been made of the constitutional issue of Zelaya’s being physically expelled to Costa Rica, and we will talk about that in the days ahead. Prominent D.C. lawyer Miguel Estrada, who was born in Honduras, eschewed legalese in favor of a meatier idiom, when he had this to say: “Zelaya should not have been arbitrarily exiled from his homeland. That, however, does not mean he must be reinstalled as president. It merely makes him an indicted private citizen with a meritorious immigration beef against his country.” Other lawyers, such as the Honduran legal scholar, Octavio Sanchez, conclude that the Zelaya expulsion was a legal and prudent action. Readers may wish to review Articles 102, 62, 272 and 239 of the Honduran Constitution.
Following the constitutionally-mandated line of succession, the presiding officer of the legislature, Roberto Micheletti, was formally installed as president of the republic. A cabinet of civilians was formed. President Micheletti immediately announced that the presidential election already set to take place five months later would go forward without any changes and that he would not (indeed, could not) be a candidate. The presidential candidates had been chosen in primaries with huge popular turnouts months earlier.
For Washington, aside from a few solemn speeches about rule of law, that really should have been the end of it. And it might have been, except that the motor of the news narrative is not facts but pictures. The visual images had already taken up their positions on the MSM storyboard, beginning with the ousted Zelaya, forlorn in his pajamas:
Zelaya in exile
Throw in some photos of soldiers in uniform and splice in video of the airstrikes on the Chilean presidential palace in the 1973 overthrow of Salvador Allende, (as a June 29th report by Reuters did), and the narrative is complete.
The opening salvo by The New York Times (”In a Coup in Honduras, Ghosts of Past U.S. Policies”) revealed an MSM storyboard not much focused on the facts of Honduras but powerfully interested in a narrative about the evil history of the U.S. and whether the new administration would repent or repeat. For the MSM, the news is defined by the past.
That is a storyboard that President Obama knows well and, as the Harvard law school graduate seems to prefer, one that requires little prudence and scant knowledge of the specific case at hand.
So on the day after a unanimous (15-0) ruling of the Honduran Supreme Court, a majority being justices from Mel Zelaya’s own party including those appointed to the court by Zelaya himself, U.S. President Barack Obama declared to a TV news camera that the Honduran “coup” was “not legal.”
No evidence was presented nor expected. On an MSM storyboard, balanced legal analysis is confusing, it hobbles the narrative. An easier fit is to offer news converted into a comic strip. Only pictures matter.
Video of foreign leaders denouncing a coup fits perfectly on a storyboard, while a dull legal document in Spanish does not. Indeed, Hugo Chavez seized control of the narrative, declaring “we cannot allow a return to the past, we will not permit it.” To which Barack Obama echoed, “it would be a terrible precedent if we started moving backwards.
Yet despite the efforts of the United States to bludgeon Honduras into obedience, the small country stood firm against the superpower and freely elected a new government on November 29, 2009.
It may not fit into the MSM news fable, but seeing Tegucigalpa refuse to yield to Washington, after the White House yielded to Caracas, is something new and important in the hemisphere, and just one of a host of major news stories born from the Honduras crisis but storyboarded out of existence.
Until now, that is. Stay tuned.
Author’s note: As it is known in Honduras that president-elect Porfirio Lobo is a longtime client of mine and a friend, as is also a past president of Honduras, I wish to make explicit that my analysis published here was not discussed with them nor with any Honduran official, and that what I write on this topic should not be construed as anyone’s views but my own.

What the Obama administration did during the ousting of Zelaya was unconscionable and incomprehensible. Thank you for posting the real story behind this so called "coup".
One of the most disgusting displays of mainstream media bias in recent history. It took weeks to get the full story, and that's only because of Fox news. It will be great to have an alternative source to double check "facts" that we hear from the idiots who are supposed to be protecting us from the liars.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for finally bringing about what our family always believed. It was next to impossible to get real information about this situation, yet on the face of it, it seemed the people were simply trying to protect themselves and make their president follow the law. The response by the United States was TELLING about where our heads of state stand regarding law. It also revealed what they value and it's NOT THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES.
I welcome Big Journalism to the NEWs front!
Reading the disclaimer, that was not required, shows true journalistic integrity. Thank you Mark for the inauguration of a new, true, reliable media!
(plus I learned alot, sans Wikipedia)
To which Barack Obama echoed, “it would be a terrible precedent if we started moving backwards." Actually Mr. President. It would be terrible. Terrible for you. We are going back to take it back.
As for Honduras….we true United States Americans salute you. Oooops there goes another rubber tree plant.
Excellent article. You could tell that the MSM and this administration realised their stupidity by the speed in which all news about Honduras disappeared from our collective here in the States.
Someone should demand that President Obama apologize to not only the Honduran people for deliberately lying about their situation, but also to the American people for misrepresenting them in this affair.
I look forward to more installments regarding Honduras from you….
I look forward to more on this subject. Good luck at Big Journalism.
If anybody needed more evidence that Obama was true believer in the ideology of Marxism – then look no further than his support for dictator Zelaya. For an American President to stand on the side of a tyrant and in opposition to the free people of Hondurus is outrageous. We have our own tyrant in the White House. God help our country.
Very interested to see where this goes, and all the subsequent "tip of the iceberg" stories coming on BJ.
The alignment of the leftists Obama, Chavez and Castro spoke volumes – to bad the "press" ignored the story.
For an expat's view, on the ground in Honduras, see: http://lagringasblogicito.blogspot.com/
The Honduras story captured several journalistic foibles all at once. The administration set the tone with the "threat to democracy talk," that established the narrative and it set in motion all the reporting forward. There are several reasons for this 1.) journalists tend to be lazy (I know, because I happen to be one) and find it much easier to go with the source than to established a separate narrative. 2.) The storyline of a thuggish military takeover is a lot splashier than reality, which is a boneheaded, totalitarian fool couldn't keep his ego in check and essentially got fired. Getting a pink-slip isn't nearly as sexy as "coup de etat," an action that creates an already established narrative in its own. 4.) Being lazy in this case supports several journalistic inclinations concerning proper politics, many of which Zelaya happens to share.
There was also a troubling back current to all the Honduran coverage. Almost all the information I read in the large national newspapers and Web sites was datelined in Washington. None of it came from actual ground reporting in Honduras unless it was press-release style stuff from Zelaya or the government, which can easily be sent thousands of miles through e-mail.
The Honduran coverage was a calculative sum of all the usual national and international reporting affectations. Anyone who believes this was a new low or some outlier of badness from a bad press corps doesn't pay enough attention.
The really really sad thing is it took me a minute to find the Constitution of Honduras translate it from Spanish to English and read everything Zelaya did was forbidden . Embrace the Dictators, Thugs, Criminals and tear down our Allies , the decent , and the honorable .
I've been following this story since last summer thru Mary Anastasia O'Grady and the Wall Street Journal. Thank you for bringing it to another audience. Everyone needs to be reminded constantly how currupt and dishonest this administration is.
A very fine example of how "template" reporting has been used by the main stream media to promote a specific agenda. Good luck with this site.
Dear Andrew,
Thanks you for being the man you are, I see you eclipsing Drudge in the not so distant future. All the best!
Glad to see this! I couldn't believe the Consitutional process wasn't getting any coverage when for the life of me I couldn't figure out why this was a coup. Glad to see I wasn't just confused… more like misled. :-/ Perhaps Obama can host a Cervesa Summit to sort it out.
On the personal conjecture front, I wonder if Chavez's plan was to get Obama on board so another regional country would have a chance to show down the big bad U.S. ; )
Finally, someone, Andrew Breitbart, has made a decision to take on the left wing media. This media has for decades run rough shod over truth in the USA. Hopefully, Andrew has begun the fight that will finally restore honesty in reporting. Long over due! Many, many thanks!
Well, i cede your point about it being a storyboarded narrative, but i think also frankly there was more than a little stereotyping here. "What? the military threw out the president of a south american country. it must be illegal!"
and for that matter, it is a discomfort with military power. i mean remember the media has a distinct anti-military thread in its thinking. they constantly depict our soldiers as committing "war crimes" abroad and going nuts from ptsd at home. that is their narrative, too.
Great piece! Breathtaking laziness on the part of the MSM in everything they do, Honduras is just another glaring example of lies by omission – - to fit their leftist narrative, the facts be damned.
I think you had to have your head in the sand to not realize that he broke the constitution and they ruled on it. I think the only people confused by it were the people not paying attention. Great blog about a non-issue!
I also like the fact that the US MSM completely ignored the evidence found in the Honduran executive mansion of the election being rigged in favor of Zelaya, (With Chavez's help), before he was ever on the ballot… A nail in the coffin anywhere else… To the MSM? Does not fit the "storyboard".
It's all coming together now,… Honduras and Venezuala must be two of the mysterious extra 7 states Obama campaigned in.
The sad thing is we can expect a lot more of this biased inept style of journalism from American media outlets. Their blatant unapologetic support for Barack Obama has put them between a rock and a hard place. Their best defense is to silence these stories and hope America forgets them; otherwise they have to face the reality that their "messiah" got it wrong from the start. Even worse they will have to admit they covered the story in a biased manner to disguise his egregious errors in judgment to protect his image. The exact same narrative was, and still is, being played out with the Iranian Revolution and now the intricate complications arising from the closing of Gitmo. Our only recourse as concerned citizens are sites like Big Journalism and to publicly challenge those who have gotten things so wrong out of their deference to the 'One".
editor: let's serve the forces of darkness and tyranny!
journalist: already on it, editor person.
editor: oh. good job then.
Mark,
Thank you for this brilliant visual and verbal expose of corruption, political and journalistic.
The "Storyboard" is changing, starting TODAY, with you and BigJournalism.

Thank you for your courage, Mary
The response of the American media was laughable and remains so throughout the entire situation in Honduras. "The Coup that wasn't"
The heroes in this were the Honduran people, the legislature and the supreme court all of whom refused to be bullied by fellow communists Chavez, Castro and Obama.
"Storyboard" I LOVE that term! Isn't that what Media Matters does everyday? Just sayin'
There ain't gonna be no apology. Obama believes we need to be led. Controlled. Dictated to.
And the people that screwed his head on backwards are just the people he thinks should do it.
The Wh stuck its nose where it least belonged and got egg and a chicken's ass in their face.
A sovereign country should be able to do what it's constitution lies out for it without any BS from the US.
Already has.
Have faith. If Hondurans can do it, so can we.

They also turned a Chicago Thug into a President.
Google search "Obama Chavez" and check out the images of the wildly grinning Obama when he meets Chavez. It is like he has just met God. Zelaya was Chavez's stooge and I am sure there was a call to Obama asking for help by his fellow leftist. The U.S. State Dept. actually acted fairly correctly in the first couple of hours before Obama butted himself in. Their rank and file people were in sympathy with the Honduran constitution but they are not the POTUS.
Chavez wanted to generally gain influence but more specifically wanted Honduran airfield refuelling support for his Drug plane operations into the U.S.
This is just another in a long line of Obama actions where I ask myself, Is he stupid, or corrupt, or anti American? Its got to be one of those.
Great analysis, Mr. Klugmann. The images really drive it home. Was the president you adviced the guy who came before Zelaya? Just curious.
I can't think of a better subject matter to be in the lead of issues for Big Journalism. This was about freedom of a people to live under their Constitution. We as a country here in America failed them. Thanks for laying out the truth Mark.
Mark – I remember reading that Zelaya was term limited and he was attempting to "amend" their constitution so that he could remain president for as long as he was able. Interesting to see how president for life Chavez and our apologist in chief (and noted foreign policy expert) Barry Obama were the first to recognize the truth and come to his defense.
Nice article!
oBOWma said he wouldn't interfere in anther nation's affairs. . .this was another lie.
Please relay to your Honduran contacts, that there are many Americans cheering on the courage of the Hondurans to live up to their motto: "Libre, Soberana e Independiente" (Spanish) "Free, Sovereign and Independent".
We know how they really feel about OUR constitution- why would we expect them to give a crap about the Honduran one?
Sooooo… let me see if I got this right. You're telling me that the MSM – professional journalists – ignored the facts, disregarding the ruling of the Honduran supreme court, and instead mindlessly aped the words of the most out of touch, dictator friendly president in the history of the United States and nearly brought down a constitutional democracy through their arrogance and stupidity?
I dunno, seems far fetched to me.
All three.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for telling this story that needed to be told. I hope the some of the Hondurans get to see it. I followed the stories and read Hondurans' comments in the MSM papers, and with the exception of the Wall Street Journal, the stories were pitiful and completely slanted to the Obama administration and you could see how hurt the Hondurans were as evidenced by their pleas for understanding.
Vive' Honduras, vive' New Media!
Thanks to the new media I always knew the truth on this one, right from the beginning! Thank you!
Please, please do expose the truth in this sordid mess of MSM excrement.
Please shine the light of truth on these true patriots of individual freedom and liberty. In a world that seems to have forgotten the lessons of communism and socialism, they are a bright light, a shinning example.
This incident filled me with hope for the future of America. If the Hondurans can stand up to the cadre of Latin American dictators, and our own Marxist leaning leader, then so can we all.
Next time you do see Porfirio Lobo, please tell him not all Americans are falling for the MSM crap. Some of us know better, and we pray they succeed.
Obama has made it pretty clear his contempt for our Constitution. His response was hardly surprising.
He comes from the swamp of the left that truly believes it's the Earth Mothers plan that the educated elite lead us chattel for our own good.
I hope he understands I plan to throw wrenches into every gear of his socialist machine.
I could not beleive my ears when I heard our President call this a coup. I guess we no lomger support democracies any more.
I wonder what that says for ours.
Lobo's election truly was a triumph for the Hondurans, in spite of overwhelming pressure from the US, Chavez, Ortega, and threats of domestic violence. According to the UK Telegraph "Despite Mr Zelaya's call for a boycott, large numbers of people formed lines at ballot stations. The electoral tribunal said voter turnout was 61 percent, more than the previous election in 2005."
This is the best general summary of the Honduran crisis as seen in the US that I've come across to date.
IMO, the Honduran people should get the Nobel Peace Prize this year for their patience and courage, and ultimate success.
Yes, I know, but I think if Mr. Nobel were still around, he'd agreed 100% on this one.
Thanks for your clarity. The emerging media told me the salient facts as the events unfolded. I have screamed at every MSM (print and TV) repetition of "Honduran coup." The MSM has no storyboard for "efficient impeachment." Perhaps that phrase might help the general public to reinterpret this recent history.
The press and Obama both got it wrong. Weird, huh?
Thank you for writing this. Apart from being well written your piece has the added benefit of being true and accurate.
The current administration is intellectually in line with the left in Latin America.
The ideologues pretending to be reporters in the media are doing their part to usher in another "worker's paradise" in Honduras just like Herbert Matthews helped Fidel Castro enslave an entire nation.
I'm always amazed by the media. It's not about truth. Just watch them. When I was younger, the interviewer was rarely seen because the focus was on the guest speaker. Now the reporters are interested in the spotlight and constantly infuse their egos into the discussion like 3 year olds at an adult tea party! Although I think it is impossible to avoid bias all together, it would be refreshing to see the news researched carefully from many angles, backed up by factual info and reported without snide or insinnuating commentary. Leave that for the editorials. Instead most news reporting appears to be a side show of celebrity wannabes or a bunch of cheerleaders in a bathroom talking about a despised rival. That's not Journalism, that's Jerry Springer.
Storyboarding these days is worse than waterboarding.

Mark, I followed this story as it unfolded and I saw no mention in the MSM of the “details” of the Honduran constitution. Our President and Secretary of State should be ashamed of the way they’ve treated the Honduran people. Freedom and liberty is born first in the hearts of the people! Americans should look to the Hondurans for inspiration.
This is an EXCELLENT analysis. I wish more Americans living here in the States read it.
I find it so so frustrating trying to educate people who I would otherwise consider intelligent and analytic on what really happened, when they have already made up their minds with whatever propaganda has been sold to them.
As a former fan of the New York Times, I've been appalled at their slanted articles on Honduras, as you stated correctly.
I will tweet this article.
I've been tweeting about Honduras, trying to educate people who don't understand what happened and who immediately dismiss it as a military coup. Thank you for adding to the conversation.
I will post this and even reference you in my online editorial column. It was a pleasure reading you, and if you're a friend of Mr. Lobo, pls tell him Hondurans are already nervous seeing him bow to the Miraflores Cartel by asking that president Micheletti resign and that the brave General Romeo Vasquez be charged.
It's outrageous and it shows lack of gratitude, given that these two brave Hondurans patriots stuck their neck out and showed the world they have a back bone defending their democracy. Not fair to punish them like that. I will come back to read more.
Thank you again! Fine writing.
Truly an informative and entertaining article.

Great Read – interesting indeed. Puts a new light on this story for someone from Sweden.
Incredible write up! As an expat in Honduras, I appreciate the clear understanding of what really happened! Thanks again!
The script for the storyboard was taken out of a book called "The Open Veins of Latin America", which Chavez gave to Obama in the Summit in Trinidad and Tobago. It was based on paradigms built from Latin America's past history. A more fitting script for Latin America in the 21st Century, however would be based on European history in the 1930s with Venezuela as Germany and Brazil playing the role of Italy. The Hitlerite Brown Shirts and Fascisti Black shirts have now changed colors to red and black bandannas. Ecuador and Bolivia play the role of Austria. Hopefully, there will be no Poland, but Honduras barely escaped this fascist storyboard.

Thank you. We have lived through this crisis in Honduras, as an expat living in Honduras it warms my heart to read all of the posts. For so long we felt isolated and started to think that the good people of the USA had their back to us. Now we know that the citizens of the USA are as mad as we are about how we were treated for standing firm for democracy, our constitution, and not bowing or kissing the ring of the likes of Chavez. Keep up the good work, Viva Honduras!!
Excellent. Thank you for writing on this subject and I look forward to more information about "the rest of the story". I've been hungering for the truth about all this.
This is why the BIG sites are going to set the standard. Raise the bar. Lead the pack. You get the idea.
For the people of Honduras this was very far from a non-issue. The failure of governments around the world to have an interest in the facts, exacerbated by media bias and lazy reporting, resulted in a poor Central American nation being cut off from international development aid/projects for 7 months. Moreover, the sufferings of the nation in the cause of its freedom was rewarded by the international community treating Honduras as a pariah. Pity the MSM didn't open up a different page of its stock book of news tropes – "plucky little nation stands up for itself in the face of evil, big bully"…
As soon as this manufactured (storyboarded) news began to break, it became immedately clear from several internet sources (realclearpolitics.com for one), that the Honduran government acted in full accordance with their required constitutional duties in ousting their would be dictator.
How could Obama have been so shockingly ignorant of the facts, and of Hondoruan constitutional law, and taking punitive actions against Honduras as well, trying to bully that small country into humiliating submission? It reminds me of Mussolini giving edicts to the Ethiopians.
There is another explanation to the Honduras storyboarding issue. June 28th was the day Zelaya was going to announce that his election had succeeded and would name the new "Constituent Assembly".
Several news media had already sent politically inclined reporters to cover that event, such as Krupskaya for CNN, which took its feed from "Telesur", the official Venezuelan news channel. Surprised by the turn of events, these "Chavista" reporters did exactly what Mark described: Storyboarding according to old paradigms ("The Open Veins of Latin America").
It should also be noted that, despite the fact that Zelaya's referendum had been declared illegal by the Honduran courts, the OAS had sent "observers" to this fake referendum. I live in Tegucigalpa and follow the news yet didn't know where I was supposed to vote, unlike the real election now which had computer terminals even in supermarkets where you could check esactly where you had to vote. The storyboarding allowed the OAS to cover up their goof
by placing attention on the supposed "Coup" instead their irresponsible behaviour.
As an American, living in Honduras, THANKYOU! for posting the truth. When this happened, spreading the truth to the world was almost impossible, and we were basically exiled within the country of Honduras from the rest of the world. Thank you!

There is another story that recieved no coverage that goes to show the kind of reporting that occured in Honduras at the beginning. A couple of days after the June 28th event, a car rental company called to see if the President's office would renew the contracts on about 70 rented cars. Of course, they said NO. Since they hadn't been returned, they were reported as stolen. Saturday after June 28th, one of the cars was captured dropping off a group of "Telesur" reporters (Official Venezuelan News Channel) in a 5-star Hotel. It turned out that their rooms were also being charged to the government. How unbiased could they be if the interested party is paying their bill?
They were working together with the "CNN en Español" channel and with reporters from some organization called "Democracy Now by Amy Goodman".

Superb article, as someone who has followed the Honduran non coup your writing shines a huge spotlight on a massive danger in our time.
The agenda driven media is a battle line that has arrived. Call it what it is, Propaganda.
The leftist wannabe dictators of the world have not changed their stripes, it is the same old play book.
The Honduran people are to be saluted and former President Roberto Micheletti will be regarded as a hero for his dedication to his country and people. It is for sure that a lessor man would have failed to hold together against practically the entire world.
With the Honduran people behind him Micheletti showed the world what a true Republic is all about.

Excellent!
Without going into details, in the course of my career, I was interviewed by the press a few times. I was, in all cases, disconcerted to find that the reporter had already decided what the story was before the interview. All questions were framed simply to confirm the already prepared "storyboard" and all answers I provided that did not fit the "storyboard" were ignored and not printed.
