You probably already know that Sam Tanenhaus, the editor of the New York Times’s Week in Review and Book Review sections, published a book last year that must have seemed like a good idea at the time he pitched it and wrote it. Called The Death of Conservatism, it won Tanenhaus rapturous reviews from the usual suspects on the left side of the aisle. Newsweek’s Jon Meacham even published a sympathetic interview in Aug. 2009 with the author, headlined Requiem for the Right: the biolgrapher of Whittaker Chambers and William Buckley on a dying movement. An excerpt:
One criticism of your book will no doubt be that you are an egghead sellout from The New York Times and aren’t a true conservative anyway.

Egghead? I wish. I’m a working journalist, plus biographer and self-taught historian. I claim no expertise as a political thinker, and even less in the realm of policy. As for my having sold out to the Times, anyone masochistic enough to review my writings over the years will see my point of view has changed very little.
Some on the Right immediately took exception to Tanenhaus’ argument, such as James Piereson in the pages of the The New Criterion:
Conservatism, moreover, is now a permanent and enduring aspect of American political life, supported by millions of Americans and defended by a large network of writers, journals, and think tanks. There is, however, a more important reason for its enduring appeal among Americans. Conservatism in America deploys the principles of tradition, reason, and orderly change in defense of liberal institutions—the Constitution, representative government, liberty and equal rights, the rule of law. It is generally the conservative, not the modern liberal, who emphasizes the inspired example of the founding fathers, the words of the Constitution, and the sacrifices made to build free institutions.
Well, that was last year and this is now:

And this:

And this:

Whose side would you rather be on? Your thoughts welcome here.

Sam doesn't know the difference between wishful thinking (from his biased perspective) and analysis.
It is time a conservative wrote a book on how to reverse course on all the progressive mindless politically correct laws on the books.
Oh yea I think maybe someone has…Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny
If you don't own a copy get one and follow the directions.
First up Row vs Wade (just to piss off all the liberal juggernauts) , then Unions be gone from public life, then maybe you can balance a state budget.
" Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. " – Mark Twain responding to a premature newspaper obituary.
Do people such as this who blow it so badly get to keep their job? Take another profession and a screw up would end up in firing or some type of retribution. But no, this won't happen in the media.
Egghead? I wish. I’m a working journalist, plus biographer and self-taught historian.
So, he aspires to be, or has delusions of being, an egghead? But since he is a working journalist he can't be an egghead?
Psst….Sam, those two things are not mutually exclusive.
Whether you consider yourself one or not, you are an out of touch elitist.
One thing I knew when the left was going all arrogant and gloating about the "Death of Conservatism", it would bring a resurgence and new life into the Conservative movement. It was very apparent to me just how left O was and he would ride it for all he could especially having the majority in the House and Senate and he has done just that. The Dims and the many of the GOP have both been hijacked by the progressive kooks and their true colors are showing. The one potentially fatal mistake the left made this time is they finally showed just how socialist in ideology they are, how much they adore dictators, how they want to be like Europe, and how they embrace any movement that is intrusive into an individuals lives, etc. Fortunately this all still flies in the face of rugged individualism…Let the cleansing begin! November 2, 2010!
Mr. Walsh I remember watching an him giving an interview on tv somewhere.
While he was touting the 'death of conservationism' the Times bestseller list had nine conservative books in the non fiction best seller list…

It may have seemed dead, but it has been resurrected.
I will be just as skeptical if someone writes a book called "Death of Progressivism" or Liberalism or Socialism or what have you after Obama gets a thumping. Ronald Reagan gave Carter and Mondale historic thumpings, but here we are with Carter II. The battle of Good vs. Evil is an eternal one, and neither will perish from the earth any time soon.
What exactly is in the water coolers at the New Yorkie Times? Champagne? A delectible white wine?
These insular elites need to escape the loop that shuffles them from upper eastside penthouse – downtown to office – limo to $200 expense account lunch – limo back to office – limo to $400 dinner – limo back to penthouse.
I'm not taliking summer in the Hamptons, go to the Heartland – get in touch people.
I doubt there's much point in considering the objective merits of Progressive political positions and predictions. Would you bother to do so with someone who believed the Earth was flat, or a fanatical Muslim? Personally, I think it's become abundantly clear that there is no intellectual component to Progressivism. It's simply a secular religion with dogmatic tenets that believers will defend to the end, no matter what. I think it would be more productive to just picture them all with a bone through their nose and move on to how we're going to contain them. Like other religions, they're not going away. They've been here over a century. And like with other religions, the key isn't to try to change the believers, but to keep any one given religion from getting ahold of the levers of power, so that we can safely ignore them. That's how the Founders did it and that's what we should be working on.

I for one am not that enamored with winning back Congress (although I think we most certainly will). If we had an honest and fair media, I would be thrilled to have Congress , but it seems MrO will use a Repub Congress as a foil and blame them for his continuing problems, which seem to be multiplying daily.
If the new NUKE proposal goes thru,( that will be a good thing for the country and shows Mr O MAY be listening), but from the sound of the plans, it seems they want to build the old style, huge expensive facilities. You attached a vid of the new smaller technology that looked cheaper and more appropiate…
Dagnab it! You took my quote! Well done. That was the first thing that came to my mind…that and the famous "Dewey Wins!" headline.
As long as we still have a viable country and a Constitution, we will always have Conservatism, it is the BASIS of our Country and Constitution….In spite of how leftists, try to bastardize it..
The Death of Conservatism is premature and highly exaggerated much to the chigrin of those who constantly tear at its fabric and try to destroy it..
Wow, one by one they are being outed for the losers they are.
I think O is not really serious about nukes he is just using it to gain popularity. We do know that megalomaniacs love attention, so this should buy him some for a bit. When you take into consideration the EPA and its Nazi style antics, things will never get past their permitting process. The EPA needs to be defunded, killed and a stake driven through its heart. They are an entity that is way out of control and very scary in their power. I am an environmentally minded individual….just hate the extreme we are seeing….there is a point where the earth becomes their god and we are parasites as they see it. I would love to see the small nukes become very common in our country, it would save us from the demons living in the middle east. And also offer an industry that could be exported….something we need terribly. But then I prejudiced having worked on nukes in the ancient of days…
I agree with your analogy of the MSM using a GOP Congress as a foil. But the MSM is in its death throes and I don't think it is going to get any better. I thank God daily for Mr. Breitbart, Fox, Drudge, the internet and talk radio, they are what is going to save this country if it can be….Have a fabulous day! I am in Pullman today with my oldest working on her house and wedding plans…so much fun! Enjoy some sunshine for me please?
Those silly founders and their quaint, outmoded ideas of “liberty” and “freedom.” We now have leaders who know what ‘We The People’ really want: Government Handouts!

A fine sentiment, but I think you might want to reconsider your prediction regarding timing. I believe it's all going to end MUCH sooner than you imagine.
44% of Americans identify themselves as Conservatives. 19% of Americans identify themselves as liberals.
To conclude that Conservatism is dead is as delusional as concluding Hussein's wasteful stimulus created any jobs.
Liberalism is dead. Massachusetts put the exclamation point on it.

I think Evan Bayh's message was heard loud and clear by the libpros : The sky is falling! – but this time, for the Dems and Rinos, it's true.
Well said.
At the end of the 2008 election cycle the Progressives had it all – the House, Senate, Executive and the Main Stream Media. But then they moved to fast, pushed to hard in to many directions and woke-up the sleeping giant of our time and the Tea Party Movement was born! You see they showed their true colors out in the open and America revolted. Had they moved slower, been able to control themselves who knows what would have happened. But don't think it's over yet we need to push back harder and end the Progressive movement once and for all!

I was more referring to Theodore Roosevelt's speech on the topic. It's quite a good read and starts off:
"There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all."
At the time, he was referring to Northern Europeans but the concept is equally valid for any race. The use of hyphenated Americanism has become a tool for the left to divide and manipulate the American people.
Progressivism is a secular religion with dogmatic leaders and supporters. They oppose our Constitution, individual freedom, and prosperity (except for themselves). Progressives hope to achieve Marxist ends by using evolutionary means. The evolutionary implementation of Progressive programs over the last 110 years has already inculcated itself deeply into the US and state government infrastructures as well as into the educational system and many other facets of our country. They will NOT easily let go of their 'progress'! I hope the American people will strive to overthrow the Progressives and to eliminate all of the damage they have to this country.
You need to add "hatemongers" to the long list of people that progressives hate.
Jamesb, your post above, and this article, remind me of remarks attributed to a woman who wrote for the New Yorker, who
in the wake of Richard Nixon's landslide victory in the 1972 presidential election stated that she couldn't believe Nixon had won, since no one she knew had voted for him.
Of course they believe(d) that Conservatism is dead, they live in their own insular little world, and they really do think that the vast majority of people (at least the ones capable of their own highly evolved level of thinking) believe in Progressive ideas just as much as they do.
Then their self-loathing must be massive…
I'm an optimist. If liberalism doesn't die quickly we'll kick it into the grave this Nov.
"….Independent women …"
I can't stress that enough. They -hate- women in general unless they subscribe to the party line. That's what turns me off every time they open their mouth.
Replace feelings for facts. Replace investigation with adoration. Replace history with fantasy. Replace reporting with opinion and what do you have? The New York Times.
Today is Ash Wednesday. I'm thinking of giving up politics for Lent. I'm concerned that a Lenten observance of 40 days may be the equivalent of going AWOL. Maybe I'll take Sundays off, just in case…

Seems Voltaire had Tanenhaus in mind when he wrote this:
"Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd. "
— Voltaire
I completely agree with your statement about about the secular religious nature of Progressivism. They DO hold the levers of power right now and the rest of us thereby have a problem. Progressivism supports using any means necessary to gain and hold on to power. It is going to require a concerted effort by the anti-progressives to defeat them.
Mr. Tanenhaus was observing the decline of conservatism since the end of the Reagan years. After Mr. Reagan's success, the Republicans for some masochistic reasons abandoned conservatism to become more like Democrats. But conservatism does not depend upon the Republicans and certainly not the Democrants. It depends upon the people. And that is what Mr. Tanenhaus failed to see.
I think part of the problem is that many older Democrats consider themselves conservative. They identify with the old Democrat Party. And they vote Democrat. How to make them understand…
Conservativism was dead, but Jesus brought it back to life. Glory to Gawd! That just proves that He's on our side.
Margaret, pass me them biscuits…
They have our schools, our government employees, our car companies, our banks, our lenders of all types. They are out to destroy the private sector and unless you are against them, you are part of the problem. Silence is a vote just as powerful as one on a ballot. They can be stopped and will be. Then, we need to remove unions from all federal positions, return total control of schools to the states, force GM and Chrysler back into private hands, and return Fannie/Freddie/banks/lending/appraisal to the private sector, including college loans. Then, a constitutional balanced budget and term limits. Big order…big country…big freedoms.
At a minimum, it will take 1,007 years from this moment in time, but yes, I do get (and agree) with your point!
2/17/10: The crisis is America is a philosophical one. A crisis of values. What are the Left's values? What were the values of our founding fathers? Are they less and less compatible? How do our new crop of values reconcile with the old ones? What was really wrong with traditional American values anyway? Check this out: Find an old U.S. History book (Published in the fifties or before). And also get a recently published version of U.S. history. Why is the tone so different regarding the same history? Do we change history to change our values, or are changed values the bias against our history? How the hell can we be objective, and yet change our history? Then, if we cannot be objective how then can we risk to loosen our traditional values? These history versions will tell you something important about how pathetic America has become.
We've lost our greatness and will probably never get it back.
I know. My mother and other relatives in her generation are old school Democrats who are largely reluctant to admit that the new Dems don't share their values.
Perhaps Obama will FINALLY make them wake up.
Here is some news to cheer you up:
Christian conservatives on the Texas education board have found themselves under the microscope of The New York Times. In its magazine edition, the Times spent no less than 10 pages trying to dissect their motivations and beliefs.
So what’s with this newfound interest in Christians?
It all boils down to this: Conservatives on the school board have dared to challenge secularist-leaning, politically correct, America-is-the-capitalistic-oppressor portrayals in the classroom, and instead are trying to give teachers the freedom to acknowledge the country’s accomplishments and its Judeo-Christian heritage.
Since Texas has so much influence on what appears in America's school textbooks, liberals are fearful that people might start LOVING the USA again and rejecting socialism among other evils.
